Friday 18th January

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have been busy this week continuing to support our Year 11 students and I would like to thank all Year 11 parents last night for joining us for parents’ evening, which is such an important event for students. I do hope that you found the evening constructive, informative and supportive and that it was a useful time for your child to take stock of what they need to practise and revise in preparation for the exams. Please continue to ensure your child is present every day, on time and, where relevant, attends all intervention they have been invited to. Congratulations, again, to our Year 13 students who continue this week to receive exciting university offers – we have received another Oxbridge offer this week and also have offers in for medicine courses amongst the diverse offers. A reminder please to ensure that your child has all basic equipment with them. It’s essential that students remember to bring stationary such as a pen, pencil, rubber and ruler every day as a minimum. After a very busy first week back it has been fantastic to see students settle so well into their learning, clubs and homework. Well done to them all. My parent surgeries continue this term on Tuesday afternoons. Please either email dharrison@cowesec.org or phone the school on 01983 203103 asking for Donna Harrison to book a pre-booked slot. Wishing you a great weekend, Rachel Kitley

ATTENDANCE Attendance matters.

Our whole academy attendance this week was 95.02%

Congratulations to the following form classes who have won tea with Mrs Harding as a reward for being the highest attending tutor group for the last half term: Year 7 – 7TMH Year 8 –8KLW Year 9 – 9ENR Year 10 – 10JRC Year 11 – 11DDD Every day counts! A reminder that the procedure to report a student absence is to call the main Academy number (01983 203103), select Option 1 and leave a message on the Student Absence Line before 8.30am. There is no direct number for the absence line. Phone calls need to be made every day of the student's absence. Please do not call any other number to report a student absence.

SAFEGUARDING The website below is really useful for parents to gain further resources and support from ‘talking PANTS to approaching difficult issues’. It has a range of tips and advice to help you keep your children safe, whether at home, out and about or online. https://www.nspcc.org.uk/preventing-abuse/keeping-children-safe/

NOTICE FROM SOUTHERN VECTIS REGARDING ROUTE 304 Main Road, Shalfleet will be closed from 9.00am until 4pm on Tuesday, 22nd January.

This will affect the 304. Pupils for Shalfleet will have to disembark at Corf Road, Shalfleet. The bus will then divert via Elm Lane, Newport Road, Newbridge and Station Road to return to normal route at The Horse and Groom. Pupils may arrive home slightly later than they would normally do so.

A great start to the new term with Year 9 learning about carbohydrates, gluten formation and how yeast works. They have successfully transferred their theory knowledge into practical skills. Today has seen some amazing skills, from relentless kneading to professional shaping. I look forward to seeing their skills develop further when we great flavour breads right through to Chelsea buns. Well done year 9 another fantastic week.

Duke of Edinburgh It has been a very busy week for Duke of Edinburgh, the students have been very busy after school planning their routes for their first training walk on 27th January at Carisbrooke Castle. They have also been logging in their volunteering, skills and physical sections.

FACEBOOK AND COMMUNICATION We have been contacted by numerous parents to ask if we can moderate the comments on the Unofficial CEC Parent and Guardian Facebook page. For clarification, this site is completely independent of the Academy and we have no control over the posts of monitoring of this. We are arranging a meeting with the administrators of the site to discuss concerns raised. We understand that parents are finding this independent site useful for the sale of uniform and we are looking into our own facilities to enable parents to safely share this in an official way.

Our official Facebook page can be found here.

Many thanks.

There will be three sittings throughout the day at 9.00am, 10.30am and 12.30am. The exam is 60 minutes long.
