NEWSLETTER Friday 18th October Dear parents and carers, Two years ago this week our strong Ofsted report was published and I assured you in my newsletter piece then that we would not be resting on our laurels and instead would continue to strengthen the academy further. This week we have had official validation that we continue to do just this as the GCSE Progress 8 scores for secondary schools have been released. These results confirm that Cowes Enterprise College is officially the secondary school on the Island from which students make the greatest academic progress by quite a significant margin. Our results continue to place us within the top 20% of schools in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight and I would like to thank staff for the huge collective effort which has led to our excellent results. We are particularly pleased as this figure is currently unvalidated and we expect it to rise further in January when the government finalise their figures. For reference purposes, Cowes Enterprise College achieved +0.12 in their Progress 8 measure, Across England the figure averages at -0.03 and the Isle of Wight average is -0.34. Over the last two years there has been much development and strengthening of the academy that has taken place, ranging from our introduction of new innovative curriculums, building further state-of-the-art facilities such as our 3G pitch, partnering with Chelsea Foundation Football Club and delivering student Charters to enhance enrichment and build character. I share with you today a document outlining ‘What’s new at Cowes Enterprise College?’ which you will find on our website: https://issuu.com/cowesec/docs/what_s_new_at_cec? fr=sMjlhZDMwNTQ4NA. I do hope that you find this an interesting summary of what we have introduced at the academy. A reminder that I hold parent surgeries twice weekly on a Tuesday afternoon from 1pm – 2.30pm and from 3.30pm – 5.30pm. Attendance is by pre-booked appointments only. Please either email dharrison@cowesec.org or phone the school on 01983 203103 asking for Donna Harrison to book in a slot in advance of each Tuesday. YEAR 7 AND 10 PHOTOS Year 7 and Year 10 photographs ordered from Atlas have now arrived at Reception. Students are welcome to collect from Reception at break, lunch or before school or after school. Parents/carers are welcome to collect them from Reception any time during our opening hours.
YEAR 11 SCULPTURE WORKSHOP The GCSE Art students worked mainly with willow, creating organic shaped structures, using simple tying and weaving techniques. Some sculptures were also covered with a ‘skin’ using tissue paper and PVA. The boys were very enthusiastic and engaged in the workshop, and developed some great 3D skills and techniques in a short space of time. Well done everyone!
E1M FIRST AID
PROM COMMITTEE CAKE SALE
In this week’s E1M sessions, Year 8 students have been learning some basic first aid skills.
We will be holding a cake sale on Friday 25th October in the Main Inspiration Zone in aid of raising funds for the Year 11 2020 Prom.
They have practiced using triangular bandages for slings and bandages for wounds. They also learned about how to treat burns, blisters and nosebleeds!
Cakes will be 50p each. Please could student ensure they bring correct change if they wish to purchase?
Any kind donations of cake for the sale would be gratefully received in the Year 11 Office by Friday at 10am. Many thanks from The Prom Committee.

It has been a pleasure to welcome them to STAR BAKER during the our recent International Egg Academy. Day celebration bake. Students produced a Quiche using a shortcrust pastry case. Orion's winning individual quiches were judged to be the a winning batch!
BURNET NEWS CLUB
One of the Burnet News Club members, Poppy M in year 8, has created an amazing poem based on what we have been looking at recently- the Hong Kong ‘crisis’.
Risks worth taking, Risks worth not, No rewind, No stop What should we do, There's not much time to lose, Countless lives of good people worth saving, We need to choose Help, Or stay still, Hoping that other countries will intervene, Hoping that soon all of this will feel like a forgotten dream, Where there is no more violence, No more, No more, More freedom and justice, Knocking at your door, Knocking at your door All these consequences, All these risks, Of wars, fights and argument bliss, It seems endless, It seems everlasting Will it ever really stop? The pressure, The pain, The sacrifices to be made, What will we do, What are we going to nationally lose? Risks worth taking, Risks worth not, No rewind, No stop...
