NEWSLETTER Friday 20th September Dear parents and carers, Today we have been ensuring that every student in the academy knows that no one is too small to have their voice heard, in response to the international youth strike about environmental issues. Every student came off timetable at the hour of the strike and we ran our first ever ‘Eco Council’ – led by students from across the academy. All students explored the theme of having a voice and considered the British voting system and democracy which culminated in every student at the academy voting for the priorities they wish the UK Youth Parliament to focus on. Every student filled out the official ballot paper and students all voted at special polling stations set up across the academy and run by our sixth formers. We were very proud of our students and I would like to thank those students who went an extra mile today in ensuring that every student had their voice heard in a positive and meaningful way. You may well have seen the press stories being run about our exciting sports news. Cowes Enterprise College can now announce an exciting partnership with Chelsea FC Foundation (CFCF) on the launch of a new football academy which will open for 2020/21 season. Over the next 12 months, Cowes Enterprise College and the Foundation will engage with talented and gifted footballers across the island to provide a pathway into further education, football participation and competition at a high standard. We are delighted with the opportunities this will hold for youngsters from across the Island. Our term feels in full flow now and we’ve had a busy week! We have heard excellent Duke of Edinburgh student presentations, and have had a real focus on careers with the whole of Year 7 and 9 attending a Career Fair at the Royal Yacht Squadron. In addition, today we have over 100 Year 8s visiting the Globe Theatre in London to be groundlings for a performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and we are so pleased that the weather has held for them. I continue to hold parent surgeries across two Tuesday sessions at 1pm-2.30pm and from 3.30pm – 5.30pm every week. Attendance is by pre-booked appointments only so please email dharrison@cowesec.org or phone the school on 01983 203103 asking for Donna Harrison to book a slot in advance of each Tuesday. The physical, skill and volunteering sections are the focus for this term with us all looking forward to the expedition training from January. Just as a reminder, the following Duke of Edinburgh training dates are given below. If there is a problem with transport then please let me know on jgibson@cowesec.org as there is a very limited number of spaces on the minibus. • Walk and map reading skills – Sunday 19th January – Meet and pick up at Carisbrooke Castle. • Walk and compass bearing skills – Sunday 9th February – Meet and pick up at Ventnor Botanical Gardens. • Walk and cooking a substantial meal – Sunday 15th March - Meet at Portland Inn in Gurnard and pick up from Cowes Enterprise College car park. • Practice expedition – 2nd- 3rd May • Assessed expedition week – 6th – 11th July – due to the increased numbers of participants this year we have an expedition week. Students will complete their expeditions over two days and one night during this expedition week. The arrangements here will be communicated through the participants in January. I will put an announcement in the newsletter when the dates and groups have been decided. I have looked through all the medical information and no one has an allergy to dogs so I will be bringing my little dog, Vinnie, on the walks and expeditions. He is a miniature poodle crossed with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel so he is a very small and friendly dog. If there is an issue with this then please email jgibson@cowesec.org.uk There may be times when he is off the lead so it is important you let me know of any issues with this. Finally, you are very welcome to join us on any of the Sunday afternoon walks, do let me know if you would like to come along and walk with us.
