Friday 22nd March

Dear parents and carers, This week we congratulate our Year 11s on sitting their English Literature mock exams. We are really impressed with their attitude, continued hard work, enthusiasm and determination for the coming exams. Well done to you all. This week our teacher recruitment period has begun in earnest with interviews taking place this week and over the next few weeks for teacher roles for September. I am delighted to share with you that we have received healthy numbers of strong applications for roles and that external colleagues visiting us for interviews are very keen to work at Cowes Enterprise College. Many of the roles advertised are growth roles – our pupil numbers for Year 7 in September of this year are promising to be exceptional and we believe we are full simply on first choices, with a first choice waiting list. This has meant we are able to expand our staffing and recruit a number of additional teachers. Congratulations to Oliver Bradley in Year 7 who, having previously won his way through to the Ormiston Academies Trust Chess Championship Finals, took part in the National Ormiston Chess Championship and came a very commendable fourth. Chess is an activity we value hugely at Cowes, offering several opportunities a week to practise and develop confidence, having recently received a significant bursary to develop chess at the academy. This week, fifteen students from Years 8-13 attended a prestigious youth regeneration conference held at the Isle of Wight Council. Students spoke at length about their views as young stakeholders of the island and the day ended with them presenting their vision for education of the future to a large audience made up of councillors, employers, careers professionals and other educators. A reminder that at the end of term on Friday 5th April we finish at 2.45pm as per the normal school day. My parent surgeries continue on Tuesday afternoons. Please either email dharrison@cowesec.org or phone the school on 01983 203103 asking for Donna Harrison to book a pre-booked slot. With best wishes, Rachel Kitley

ATTENDANCE #AttendanceMatters.

This week saw many tutor groups enjoying celebration breakfasts with Mrs Harding to celebrate meeting the academy’s high expectations of attendance. There is a clear link between attendance and achievement and so we thank all parents and carers for your continued support in supporting us to achieve the best possible outcomes for your child.

SAFEGUARDING A reminder to all parents and carers to be extra vigilant about your child’s access to social media. Please monitor your child’s online activity which will help keep them safe. The legal age for using Facebook and Snapchat is 13 years old. We are all aware of the dangers online and we continue to educate regularly on how our children can keep themselves safe in an online world but we need parental help and support at home with this. At CEC many students continue to work hard to notify us when there are new apps and new groups that are released online and also when there is online activity that may be threatening the safety of some of our community and/or putting them in potentially vulnerable positions. Some students are telling us that there are some students who are regularly using group chat facilities and often these are anonymous. One particular snapchat group chat that has been brought to our attention by vigilant students is through snapchat called ‘Talk to me.’ The groups own tag line is: ‘Talk to someone. Meet strangers, share secrets express anonymously.’ Please be aware. Another app to be aware of is ‘Tellonym’ – shared through Instagram and snapchat and allows anonymous messages to be sent to a group.

We of course, understand that there are times when attendance to school can be challenging and so if you do need support, please contact the main academy reception where our Family Liaison Assistant - Mr Carey will be more than happy to meet with individual parents/carers to discuss further.

There are many ways that you can support and keep your children safe online but regular supervision and access to electronic devices regularly and holding passwords for their apps can go a long way in ensuring their safety. Other ways include installing apps that help you track children’s online content and searching and many of these are advertised and recommended through the NSPCC website. We are exceptionally proud of our students for ensuring that we continue to have open and honest discussions regarding online use and the continuous sharing of information that ensures we are constantly intervening to keep our children safe. Thank you for your support and if you would like any further support with how to keep your child safe online, please do get in touch with the academy where a member of the Safeguarding Team will be more than happy to discuss further.

DOWN’S SYNDROME AWARENESS WEEK Yesterday staff and students at Cowes Enterprise College donned bright mismatched socks for the #LotsOfSocks odd sock day.

THE PINK MILE

Friday 5th April at 1pm – we shall be supporting a member of our CEC community in running ’The Pink Mile’. This is in support of fundraising for Breast Cancer research. If anyone would like to run the pink mile with Mrs Harding and colleagues at 1pm on Friday 5th April – the entrance fee is £1 and names need to be logged with reception by Tuesday break time. There are a limited amount of spots to take part in this event so entrants will be awarded places on a first come, first served basis. There will be other ‘pink’ fundraising events happening on the break and lunchtime of this day for students to become a part of.

YEAR 7 PROBLEM SOLVING IN DT

A bake sale was held during break time and, with huge thanks to Grace’s mum for baking so many delicious cakes, we raised an amazing £125.75!

SEN SURGERY We are offering SEN surgeries from 15:00-16:40 on the last Thursday of every month, with Thursday 28th March being the next session. This is a chance to come in and discuss your child’s provision; appointments will be 20 minutes in duration, through pre-bookable slots.

Year 7 had a brilliant problem solving lesson on Wednesday in Design Technology. Looking at which materials, shapes and sail designs will create the best boat for gutter racing. They raced their boats at different stages within the lesson and then took time to solve the issues such as boats with uneven weight distribution or the use of the incorrect materials. Miss Bracegirdle is really looking forward to next weeks lesson already! CLICK HERE to view a video of their amazing work.

OAT CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP Following on from the previous tournament, a champion from each OAT school was invited to compete in an on-line tournament. Oliver Bradley (Year 7) was our representative against students of various ages from nine other schools. After three hours of playing, Oliver placed a respectable 4th. Congratulations Oliver. Well played!!

In order to answer your questions effectively and efficiently we must know in advance the questions or queries that will be raised at the time of booking. If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity, please contact edowner@cowesec.org who will arrange a time slot. Application forms available at your year office. You may enter as an individual or as a group (no more than 4 people) There are 4 different ways in which you can enter: Signature Bake, Technical Bake, Showstopper or all 3!

All baked goods to be bought into school on Thursday 4th April to your year office. Judging will be completed during the day and winners announced on Friday morning. All baked goods will then be on sale during break and lunch time on Friday 5th April. Entries cost £1 per challenge, to be handed in with your application form by Monday 1st April

A huge thank you! We have had some incredible donations of books, for our library, this week. Thank you to these children for thinking of us, whilst decluttering their book shelves:George and Harry D Georgina D-F Lotti H If anyone else has books at home which they no longer want, and which would be suitable for our library – we would be very grateful
