NEWSLETTER Friday 22nd November Dear parents and carers, I am proud of the broad and balanced curriculum that Cowes Enterprise College is able to deliver to our students and my team and I continually look for ways to enhance our curriculum, to ensure it best meets the needs of the students both now and for their futures. The decision has been made to adapt our offering in school to ensure students from Cowes Enterprise College continue to have the best opportunity to achieve their ambitions beyond their time here. To allow our students to experience a broad curriculum for as long as possible, the Key Stage 3 curriculum will be extended into Year 9. This will move the timing for students to pick their Key Stage 4 options into Year 9, allowing them the opportunity to develop a better understanding of the course requirements of subjects before they are asked to make a choice about their future study. The additional time allocated in Year 9 will allow more depth in each subject to ensure that our students have a better understanding across a wider range of subjects. Students will also get the opportunity to experience taster lessons. Please do speak to Ms Davis if you have any questions regarding this. With only 4 weeks to go until the Christmas break, please be sure to read the ‘Upcoming Academy Dates’ section of the newsletter and to commit events to your diary. Years 11, 12 and 13 have their mocks fast approaching, starting on Thursday 5th December, with a small number of exams beginning earlier, and finish on Friday 20th December. We wish all students well with this very busy period of revision. Our annual school play this year is Robin Hood and his Merry Men and we are delighted that this will be our first ever pantomime. Tickets are now available on Scopay. Our students have been rehearsing with great enthusiasm and it is set to be a fun, fast and furious run of evenings. We would also love to share our Christmas Concert with you at Cowes Enterprise College at 7pm on Thursday 12th December. Thank you to all parents who attended Year 12 and 13 parents’ evening, which was very successful. I was attending the Ormiston Academies Trust annual conference this week and so wasn’t able to attend this parents’ evening as I usually do but do hope that you found this evening useful and positive. CHRISTMAS JUMPER DAYS On Friday 13th December we invite students to wear a Christmas jumper in place of their blazer. Only Christmas jumpers may replace a blazer. If students do not wish to wear a Christmas jumper they should wear their blazer as normal please. This will be for a suggested donation of £1 which will go to Save the Children. We will have another Christmas jumper Day on Friday 20th of December, no donation needed. Again, only blazers are to be replaced by Christmas jumpers and only Christmas jumpers are allowed. The rest of students’ uniform should follow the uniform guidelines as normal for both days.
On Tuesday afternoon, our Music Technology students from Year 10, 11 and 13 were able to attend a special event in the Creative Area: Steve Bingham (well-known British electric violinist) and his duo partner Brenda Stewart delighted us with a special, interactive performance. Their set included a varied repertoire that included pieces by Mozart, Satie and Michael Nyman. For their set, they not only used classical instruments (violin and viola), but also used electric violins and technology-based hardware. Our students had the opportunity to learn about loop pedals, launchpads and software to manage these tools by attending a very special performance, followed by a very interesting Q&A session with Steve, in which students got the opportunity to ask him about his use of music technology for his performances.
Well done to the Year 10 Football Team on winning their league. They played well in all of their league matches and beat The Bay on Tuesday 1-0 in
A MAZE ING Duke of Edinburgh kit and meeting
In the run up to Christmas I have had some requests from parents about getting Duke of Edinburgh kit for Christmas. We can lend out kit to students except walking boots so they might be a good idea to buy and then be worn for the training walks that start in January. Other useful items are a sleeping bag, rucksack big enough for the kit but not too big for the student to carry and a portable cooking stove. As previously announced we will be having our parents and participants meeting on Wednesday 8th January at 5pm.
The students within Design Technology's KS4 Resistant Materials groups are learning how to use CAD/CAM to design and make a ball bearing maze. They are using software to design a product that is then manufactured on one of our two in-house laser cutters. The parts are cut and then students assemble them to produce a quality final outcome. Well done everyone!
Cowes Enterprise College Bake Off for Children in Need 2019 Last Friday 15th November saw a number of students bake for charity and enter our bake off competition. The standard was very high which made judging difficult but the following students received first prize in a range of categories and were presented with a certificate and new apron.
Will Steedman – “Snow men” won first prize in the “Small Cake” category
Max Poynter – “Pudsey shaped cake” won first prize in the “Children in Need themed cake” category
Oliver Blanchard and Ellie Fuller – “Double cookie Dough Pudsey Biscuits” won first prize in the “Best technical cake” category Amara Mason – “Pudsey 3D Icing” won first prize in the “Technical Icing” category Sam Collinson – “Rolo Chocolate Cake” won first prize in the “Chocoholics” category.
A huge thank you and well done to all of our bakers, and to those who came and purchased cake. We raised £71.70 for Children in Need in a cake sale that lasted only approximately 18 minutes!
