Friday 25tth January
Dear Parents and Carers, I am delighted to be able to share with you information from the school performance tables, which have been released this week. The A Level performance tables show that Cowes Enterprise College was the highest state funded school on the Isle of Wight for sixth form pupils achieving AAB or higher in at least two facilitating subjects. We have also seen real success at GCSE, with the GCSE performance tables ranking us as the highest school on the Island for both GCSE progress and also the number of students who achieved a Grade 5 in both English and Maths. While we are thrilled with this success, we still know we have much to do to continue to make the academy ever stronger. Our Year 11s continue to focus on their revision and our intervention sessions were buzzing yesterday evening. Around 80 students today have also taken part in a study skills workshop. Feedback has been very positive from the session. There will be more coming for other Year 11s over the next few weeks. At this stage, we would be expecting Year 11 students to be revising for up to 4 hours an evening and are keen to do everything we can to support students during the school hours. I am delighted to announce our new Head and Deputy Boy and Girl for 2019-2020. Congratulations to Kieran Wetherick and Beth Pitts who are our new Head Boy and Head Girl and also to Ben Simmonds and Angeline Sison who are our Deputy Head Boy and Girl. I would like to thank all students who interviewed for the roles. Mr Sanchez-Brown and I were truly struck with the enthusiasm and commitment all students involved in the process displayed. Thank you also to our tremendous outgoing team from Year 13 who have shown such passion for their roles: Albert Newton, Mimi Poulton, Duke Peters and Ellen Wood. It has been a busy week of learning in all key stages. I have been visiting lessons with other senior colleagues this week and it has been a pleasure to see our students working hard and enjoying their learning across the year groups. There were highlights right through the year groups, from seeing Year 7 students really focusing in Maths with creativity and independence to hearing A Level students evaluating each other’s music compositions with confidence and real expertise. My parent surgeries continue this term on Tuesday afternoons. Please either email dharrison@cowesec.org or phone the school on 01983 203103 asking for Donna Harrison to book a pre-booked slot. Wishing you all the very best, Rachel Kitley
ATTENDANCE As the cold weather has hit the island it is even more vital that we jointly stress to our young people the importance of taking care of themselves and preventing the spread of colds and coughs. Please can we ask, with your support, in reinforcing at home the importance of proper hand washing to keep germs at bay.
SAFEGUARDING Awareness of children’s behaviours online: Questions to ask: Do you know what your child is looking at online? Do you know what your child is posting online? Do you and your child know who they are really talking to online? The academy consistently reinforces the message to students to ensure they know the answers to these questions and know what to do to keep themselves safe. Have a look at this BBC Article which specifically talks about Fortnite’s chat feature: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/ technology-43988210
The student leadership team at CEC have been recognised for their efforts by the Isle of Wight Youth Council and have been awarded a Silver Youth Voice Award (YoVA). Cowes Enterprise College are one of only two schools to receive this award!
Mr Murdoch went to collect the award on behalf of the Student Council and Form Representatives at County Hall on Tuesday evening. We have been praised specifically for the variety of ways we actively listen to our students and the prominent role the elected school council plays in the running of the academy. Our next goal is the YoVA Gold award.
Further to her success in September, Georgia Morey (Year 8) has gone on to compete in the Open Platform Irish Dancing Federation (OPIDF) Feis this weekend in London. Georgia competed in various different dances and gained many awards. Georgia also became an OPIDF Under 13 Primary Champion in her championship reel. Well done Georgia, we are all so proud of you!
Jasmine and Louisa Young (Years 9 and 7) performed at the British Synchronised Ice Skating Championships this weekend. The girls are part of skating team ‘The Wight Crystals’, who achieved a massive personal best and finished fourth in their hugely competitive category. Wight Sparkles (with whom Louisa also skates) won Silver in their Basic Novice Category. We are very proud of Jasmine and Louisa and their achievements. You can see footage of the British Synchronised Ice Skating Championships on BBC iPlayer.
On Monday we were delighted to be joined by staff from Comic store Heroes who presented us with a hugely generous donation of 50 graphic novels in a special assembly for our Year 7 students. Graphic novels are important in engaging learning in literacy, as well as proving as a source of inspiration for aspiring artists, English students, budding writers of all genres and fans of creative fiction. At Cowes Enterprise College, we’re passionate about ensuring our students have access to creative outlets just like this, which is important for nurturing talents and passions and boosting creativity. We hope to use the gift to create a stand-alone graphic novel library for our students to enjoy. Heroes have agreed to continue to add new books to the library to ensure it only continues to grow in its influence. Statistics from the Graphic Novel Library this week: Books borrowed so far: 24! Of these, 4 books are on loan for the 2nd time & 2 are on loan for the 3rd time!.
This week Miss Wisniowski’s Year 8 class have been working really hard in geography producing population distribution maps, making sure they are detailed accurate and nicely presented. The whole class has been working well, but five students in particular produced excellent pieces of work that she would like to share. Very well done to Max, Angus, Hugo, Ella, and Calum!
BADMINTON HAMPSHIRE FINALS 17th January 2019 After winning and coming runners up in the Island Schools Badminton tournament in November, Christ the King College and Cowes Enterprise College Ks3 and 4 girls formed an IOW team to take on the rest of Hampshire. After an early start we made our way to Westgate Badminton centre in Winchester. The Key stage 3 girls were first up and they started strong against Farnborough Hill, winning the match 4-1 in games. The second match against Hurst saw the IOW dominate with Jess winning her match 15-0! Great partnerships between Megan and Jess and Abigail and Izzy saw us win the match 5-0. The final game of the pools was against Purbrook Park and once again the Island dominated from the start and the 3rd win sealed our place in the gold medal match. The gold medal match was against the hosts Westgate school who were a strong opposition. Once again strong attacking play from Jess saw the Island take the lead. Westgate pulled it back. Izzy then stepped up for her singles match and it was a nail bitter! But Izzy kept fighting and her resilience paid off with a win! All we needed was to win one of our doubles matches. Jess and Megan paired up and were determined to win! Their determination shone through and IOW were crowned Hampshire Champions 2019! An amazing achievement! Next up trying to follow the success of the Key stage three girls were the Key stage 4 girls. First opposition was St Anne’s, Isabelle’s quick reflexes and Holly’s stamina in their games ensured the island started of with a win, 4-1 to the island. The next game against Purbrook park saw some really closely fought games, however the pairing of Lara and Eden helped the Island to another win. Next up we’re their strongest competition, Court Moor. Despite a valiant effort from the IOW court moor’s consistency and depth of squad meant they were unable to progress on to the gold medal match. However the bronze medal match awaited us! We were up against the hosts Westgate school and Isabelle started us off with a win! Despite Lara’s great positional play, Westgate pulled one back. Tia and Isabelle’s pure determination and belief brought it back to 2-2 and down to the deciding match. Unfortunately we were unable to win our second medals of the day as the home team were triumphant. A fantastic day was had by all and it has to be said the was highlight of the day wasn’t winning it was seeing students from two different schools on the Island unite together. These students had never played together before and by the end of the day they were singing along in the mini bus as if they were in the same school! Well done girls, Miss Simmonds, Mrs Clark (CTK) and Mr Hughes (Cowes) are super proud of how you have excelled today and represented our Island. Key stage 3 team: Abigail, Jess Gilbert, Megan, Izzy Pearson Key stage 4 team: Isabelle, Holly Coshell, Tia Kirwin, Eden, Lara
18th January 2019 The following day saw the boys Badminton Hampshire finals take place at the same venue. The KS3 IOW team were represented by students from Carisbrooke College and Ryde School and KS4 by Cowes Enterprise College. The KS4 team consisted of Aaron Scott-Roberts, James Fletcher, Oliver Evans, Richo Hadibroto and Curtis Thompson. They faced Court Moor, St Georges and Romsey in their pool. In each match 4 of the 5 boys played and rotated the spare player as the matches were completed. In their first match against Court Moor School all of the team won their games with Oliver and Aaron only conceding 3 points in their singles games. In their second match versus St George’s the team won 4-1 showing some very good doubles play from James and Aaron and Oliver and Richo, without conceding more than 10 points in each game. The final pool match was against a challenging Romsey team. 2 of the games went close to the wire but with some consistent doubles play involving Curtis and a solid team performance the team won 4-1. This sealed first place in their pool earning themselves a place in the gold medal play off. In the final the boys faced Westgate School, the hosts of the tournament and a team consisting of national and county players. The boys narrowly missed winning one of the 3 doubles games and despite some very good points being won in the remainder games the opposition proved too strong. All of the boys in both Key Stages were a credit to each of their respective schools and all of their staff who attended the tournament with them are immensely proud of the attitude and performances they displayed throughout the day, especially Mr Hughes. Very well to done everyone.

Please could all students in years 9, 10 and 11 double check their English Language revision guides (if one has been ordered from school) as the company seems to have sent a few that are for the wrong exam board. Please double check your guide and make sure it is EDEXCEL. We follow Edexcel for both English Language and English Literature.
