NEWSLETTER www.cowesec.org info@cowesec.org

Friday 26th April

Dear parents and carers, I do hope that you have all had a restful break and are now enjoying what feels like the start to summer! While most of our students were enjoying a well-earned time away from school it was tremendous to see so many of our Year 11 and Year 13s joining us over the break for revision. I know students in these year groups are rising to the challenge of their GCSEs whether at home or at school and we are very proud of them. As we near exam time, it is now essential that students are revising and we are all here to support them. Thank you also to all teachers involved in this Easter support programme. I am delighted to also let you know that the work on our 3G pitch is going well and is considerably ahead of schedule. This means I am able to share the news that from May 20th all external exams should be able to return to the Winder Centre and to Capstan House. There is the slight caveat on this news that were we to have prolonged, heavy rain across a considerable number of days, the project may be slightly delayed but we do not anticipate this being the case. All Year 13 exams can take place back at the Winder Centre meaning our Year 13 exams will be totally unaffected by the building work. Year 11 will be able to return to the Winder Centre after only one week of the main exams, meaning the vast majority of the exam sessions will be able to be housed there. A reminder as we start a new term that we expect students in correct uniform, on time and with correct equipment. Being ready for school in all ways is a key way to ensure that students get off to a flying start. I continue to enjoy my parent surgeries as meeting parents and hearing your thoughts is key for me. This term my parent surgeries continue on Tuesday afternoons. Please either email dharrison@cowesec.org or phone the school on 01983 203103 asking for Donna Harrison to book a pre-booked slot. With best wishes, Rachel Kitley

ATTENDANCE

SAFEGUARDING

There is a clear link between attendance and achievement and so we thank all parents and carers for your continued support in supporting us to achieve the best possible outcomes for your child.

A reminder that we have some very useful information regarding some on the most popular social media platforms that our students are using. These can be found on our website or via this link:

#AttendanceMatters.

We of course, understand that there are times when attendance to school can be challenging and so if you do need support, please contact the main academy reception where our Family Liaison Assistant - Mr Carey will be more than happy to meet with individual parents/carers to discuss further.

Parents should telephone the academy on 01983 203103 and select Option 1 before 8.30am on each day of absence, informing of the reason of absence and when their child will be returning to the academy, leaving a message on the voicemail.

Phone calls need to be made every day of the student's absence. Parents are required to send a letter of explanation of absence when their child returns to school. This should be handed into reception. This letter should detail the duration and reason for absence.

You can also find information on keeping children safe while online gaming, top tips for managing screen time and online safety tips for parents of teenagers. If any parents or carers would like any support with safeguarding concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Academy reception who will put you in contact with the Safeguarding team.

3G PITCH UPDATE

For a larger version of this image click here

Contractors have been continuing to work on our 3G pitch over the Easter break and we are now seeing different layers of materials laid, and lights have been placed. It is very exciting to see this come together. We will continue to post weekly updates on how the pitch is progressing, so make sure to keep up to date with our weekly newsletter and our social media pages!

YOUNG ENTERPRISE

YEAR 7 AND YEAR 8 MUSIC

We are delighted to announce that Mohamed Aziz and Reece Nichols in year 12 have won Runner up Company of the year for the Isle of Wight Young Enterprise Competition. The students created a company called Tru -Gifts which specialises in personalised gifts. They had to create a business plan, financial statements and run a live business. Through their hard work and determination, Reece and Mo created an highly professional online business which continues to be profitable today. Young Enterprise Judges were particularly impressed with the professionalism of their presentation skills and confidence under scrutiny. Mohamed Aziz. Managing-Director of Tru-Gifts said: This a great experience and helped us learn about the world of business and develop an entrepreneurial mindset. We would like to thank Mr. Tracey and Mr. SanchezBrown for giving us this opportunity and supporting us through the competition.

From Tuesday7th May, the music curriculum for years 7 and 8 will be delivered through two fully immersive days of high quality professional instruction and workshops. The music drop down days will involve practical music making and widening musical experiences from professional musicians and highly experienced specialist music teachers. The full day sessions will facilitate deep exploration of musical concepts and ensure that students keen to extend their performance and composition skills have access to expert support and guidance. The music drop down days will take place in the final half term of this year. The sessions previously used for music will be contain PSHCE lessons to ensure that students develop their employability, social, collaboration skills and develop debating experience through the exploration of ethical and topical issues. This is a temporary measure as we are currently in the process of recruiting specialist music teachers for September 2019.
