NEWSLETTER Friday 28th February Dear parents and carers, It has been a rich and busy half term break and first week back. Our highlights this week have included having Age UK in to work with our Year 9s, who have begun their social action project in Everyone matters, or E1M as we call it. This project will see the whole of Year 9 really engaging in work with the elderly and developing an understanding of what it is to be part of the older community of Cowes. We thank Age UK for being so generous with their time and were also delighted to have their feedback on the excellence of the year group in their sessions with them this week. Social action is a significant part of being a Cowes Enterprise College student and we are embracing with Yr7, 8 and 9 the concept of ‘I Will’ in our curriculum through these community and outwards facing social projects students will be involved in. Large numbers of our year 11s came in to the academy over half term to continue to be supported in their revision. Well done to our students for their commitment to all their half term revision whether on or off site. I’m sure this has put them in a strong position for this week’s mock exams and congratulations again to the year group for keeping the hard work This week has been a week of celebrating achievements across the academy, from excellent attendance to subject awards through our celebration assemblies. We are very proud of all our students who have received awards this week and are looking forward to Year 7’s celebration assembly next week.
My parent surgeries continue on Tuesday afternoons. Please either email dharrison@cowesec.org or phone the school on 01983 203103 asking for Donna Harrison to book a pre-booked slot. With best wishes, Rachel Kitley Click the arrows or swipe to turn pages

SOCIAL ACTION WORK BEGINS This week we were excited to begin our brand new Social Action work in our E1M (Everyone Matters) sessions! This is a new aspect of our curriculum and we are delighted to welcome Age UK Isle of Wight to the Academy to work with our students on a six week project. Students will be working with older members of the community to share life stories, develop empathy and to be the change they want to see.
Here are some comments from our students during Monday’s session:
DRAGON’S DEN CHALLENGE Today, our Year 12 Young Enterprise Team (consisting of James, Noah and Harry) delivered a presentation as part of the Young Enterprise Dragon’s Den Challenge! They explained their concept for ‘Saint Apparel’, discussed their business concept, the market research they had undertaken and explained their marketing ideas. The ‘Dragons’ all complimented the team on their idea, their financial plans and the way they dealt with robust questions from the panel! The team had requested an investment of £40 towards their marketing budget, but the Dragons increased their investment to £50 because they were so impressed!
LEARNING ABOUT CONSENT In Tuesday’s E1M (Everyone Matters) sessions, students were learning about what consent is and the importance of consent in all aspects of life. Students took part in a practical demonstration of the power of saying no and listening when someone tells you to stop.
MARINE CURRICULUM
BOAT BUILDING This week the boat building team have been making good some of the old panels and boards. They also tested the structural integrity of some of the existing boards and secured them.
World Book Day 5th March 2020 To celebrate World Book Day, we will be holding a competition, on Thursday 5 th March, at lunchtime:Children have the task of finding book titles, from 8 members of staff on duty. The first children back to Mrs Bowen, in the library, with all 8 book titles, will receive a prize. As in previous years, all children will be receiving a World Book Day £1.00 book token:These can be exchanged for one of the special World Book Day books – available in book shops and major supermarkets – or towards buying a book of £2.99 or more
We have decided to give the year 10 students more time to consolidate their learning with Creative Media Production and have therefore postponed their mock exam. All preparation work will be used in September of year 11. This will give the students the opportunity to achieve higher grade criterion in the external assessment and is a decision made in the students best interests.
