Friday 29th March

Dear parents and carers, It is with great pleasure that I am able to share with you more fantastic news this week. We have been awarded a significant grant to fill skill gaps in the maritime industry here on the Island. This funding, which in total comes to over £150,000, will enable us to develop a cutting-edge curriculum here to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects and employability within these areas. Our curriculum will launch for Year 7 in September 2019 and roll through each year and will blend theory in the classroom, embedded in key curriculum subjects, with practical learning linked to the maritime industry. Excitingly, the curriculum is due to include boat-building, including design and specifications; navigation electronics; celestial navigation; tides; admiralty chart conventions; shipping forecasts; practical boat-handling skills; and the holding of a CEC Regatta to celebrate and sail the boats built by students. The Maritime Skills Alliance and CECAMM, part of the Isle of Wight College, are among the partners who will support on curriculum development. This is an exciting project for Cowes Enterprise College, and we look forward to developing and then delivering a high-quality curriculum that integrates practical learning with the regional economy. We will work in close partnership with local employers and further education providers to ensure we are providing our pupils with not only a breadth of choice at 14, but the kind of skills that will last for a lifetime. Thank you to all parents of Year 8 students for attending our Year 8 parents’ evening. It was great to see, again, such a good turnout and I hope that you found the evening both useful and informative. If you were unable to attend, the year team will be in touch to ensure that we still manage to share with you key information from the evening in a separate appointment as we intend every student to benefit from parents’ evening. It is with regret that I inform you that Mr Sampler is leaving us at the end of this term. Mr Sampler has enjoyed working at Cowes Enterprise College and we have valued his input. Following a difficult family circumstance, he and his family have decided to relocate in September. He feels he needs to support and spend time with his family in the interim therefore we have consented to him leaving on April 30th. He would like the school community to know that he is grateful for this consideration and support, that he has really enjoyed his time at Cowes Enterprise College and thinks very highly of the staff and students and wishes you all well. He looks forward to seeing some of you around the island before he relocates and wishes you all the very best. We are currently putting arrangements in place for music lessons in the summer term and aim to communicate this next week. A reminder that at the end of term on Friday 5th April we finish at 2.45pm as per the normal school day. With best wishes, Rachel Kitley

ATTENDANCE #AttendanceMatters.

The academy is working relentlessly to ensure that the best outcomes for your children are secured. Part of ensuring this is for them to be in school every day. Thank you for your continued support in supporting us to support your child in achieving their very best #AttendanceMatters.

SAFEGUARDING We have been alerted to a new app which can help you in keeping your child safe when they are not under your supervision – Holly Guard. Below is an explanation of the app from the app store: Hollie Guard turns your smartphone into a personal safety device. In danger? Shake your phone or tap the screen to generate an alert. Your location and audio/video evidence will automatically be sent to your emergency contacts who can take action to help you quickly. Three alert types - Personal, Stealth, and Deterrent - allow you to choose an alert setting appropriate to your specific needs. Meeting someone? The Meeting Timer gives you extra protection when you are going to a dangerous meeting or are meeting someone new. Simply enter descriptive information and the duration of the meeting. When the meeting time has expired an alert will automatically be raised. Traveling? The Journey feature allows you to notify your friends, family, and co-workers of your movements while traveling. Enter your start and end point, and an SMS & email will be sent to your emergency contacts when you’ve started and safely completed your journey. To register for an account please visit www.hollieguard.org Hollie Guard was developed by the Hollie Gazzard Trust (HGT) to help people stay safe. HGT supports young hairdressers and charities fighting domestic abuse and anti-knife crime. The app was created in honour of Hollie Gazzard. For more information about the Trust please visit our website www.holliegazzard.org.

Parents should telephone the academy on 01983 203103 and select Option 1 before 8.30am on each day of absence, informing of the reason of absence and when their child will be returning to the academy, leaving a message on the voicemail. Phone calls need to be made every day of the student's absence. Parents are required to send a letter of explanation of absence when their child returns to school. This should be handed into reception. This letter should detail the duration and reason for absence.

Well done to Albert Krista in 7TMH who created this image as part of the digital leader competition to design an online safety/cyber bullying logo for the academy!

She played in the U13's Hampshire girls league cup final on the 23rd March in Winchester, against Eastleigh girls U13's, having already won the Hampshire Youth Cup on the 9th March. The team did not concede a goal and won 10 nil, with Holly playing as captain, at Centre Back. She's now looking forward to getting 'stuck in' to some league fixtures and is hoping to top the table, before going on tour with the team to Vitesse Arnhem, at the end of May.

NEW SOUTHERN VECTIS ROUTE 51 Southern Vectis are really looking forward to welcoming Cowes Enterprise College students on board their new Route 51 and hope that the route will provide a more direct service to and from school for students rather than having to use Route 1 and walking to and from stops on Park Road. The bus will follow the standard Route 1 “via Round House” route and then turn off up Ward Avenue to serve the school. All usual bus stops are served en route. Standard fares will apply as per Route 1, though students can of course take advantage of purchasing either Freedom tickets for 7 days, 30 days or 90 days, or multi-day tickets (which don’t have to be used on consecutive days) in 5 day, 15 day or 30 day bundles, through our Key card scheme. These tickets are a great way of saving money on single fares and also tickets can be used outside of school times eg evenings, weekends, school holidays etc, allowing great flexibility. (the 7 day Freedom ticket can be bought as a paper ticket on the bus as well) For information on registering for the Key card and purchasing Freedom / Multi-day tickets, please visit http://www.islandbuses.info/page.shtml? pageid=1273 or contact our Customer Services department on 01202 678100 (0800-1830 Mondays to Fridays)

A massive well doneFor to those girls who took partimage in the ‘This is Me’ event on a larger version of this Tuesday evening; Miss Smith’s Northern Soul Dance group, Constance M-H, click here Ruby F and Ellicia C, all of whom showed so much bravery and passion. It was excellent to see such talented students within the school who have not necessarily had the chance to showcase their talents before. An excellent amount of money was also raised for the charity ‘YoungMinds’. Thank you to all those who came to watch and kindly donated. We hope this will be a growing annual event, giving lots more students an opportunity to perform.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH NEWS On Sunday, the group went on a really great walk to Thorness Bay, where students cooked a 'substantial meal' in preparation for their practice expedition at the end of April. The group enjoyed wonderful weather and the students were fab!
