Friday 1st February
Dear Parents and Carers, This has been another busy week, particularly for our sixth form. Thank you to all parents who attended our sixth form parents’ evening and I do hope that you found the evening essential in letting you know how to support your child as they move towards their external examinations. This week the senior team have also been meeting with all year 11s one to one and discussing with them their aspirations following Year 11 and what they need to do to achieve them. We were delighted to hear how many students are now revising in earnest and to hear many pledges made by students to focus significantly on revision this week and onwards. Students are reporting using the myriad of revision support tools on offer such as GCSE Pod and revision guides, Seneca Learning and flash cards. We advise between 2 and 4 hours of revision an evening from this point onwards. We are also proud of the students who have been receiving Celebration Breakfasts this week because of their excellent attendance. Congratulations to them all. Students who miss school regularly develop knowledge and skills gaps which are difficult for them to catch up and this can lead to difficulties both in the shorter and longer term so thank you to all parents for valuing attendance at school. Finally, this week you may have received an email from a Cowes Enterprise College email address which was sent via a nationwide malicious phishing attempt. If so, we recommend you change your password if you opened the email. Thank you to those parents who emailed us during this situation. My parent surgeries continue this term on Tuesday afternoons. Please either email dharrison@cowesec.org or phone the school on 01983 203103 asking for Donna Harrison to book a pre-booked slot. With best wishes, Rachel Kitley
The final farewell from our departing Head Boy - Albert Newton and Head Girl - Mimi Poulton Now is the time to pass the baton to the next sixth form student leadership team. In our short reign we have had opportunities that have enhanced skills we didn’t know we even possessed. Through everything we have achieved, the position has helped improve our confidence as well as our understanding of how much it really takes to implement ideas in order to develop and serve our school community.
Albert: Before I took the role of Head Boy, I never thought I would find myself standing in front of crowds of strangers, delivering a speech about everything Cowes Enterprise College has done for me personally. Improving my public speaking skills has helped prepare me for University.
Mimi: In my time as Head Girl I’m proud to say that the Red Box Project has been introduced to the school, providing freely available menstrual products to students who are in need of them.
And just because our time in power is officially over, our now ‘consultant’ leadership team, Duke Peters, Ellen Wood, Mimi and Albert, intend to remain as involved with social activism and anything we could do to improve the last few months our year group will be spending here after seven long years. Thank you Cowes Enterprise College
Albert Newton and Mimi Poulton – Former Head Boy and Head Girl
Message from our newly appointed Head Girl and Head Boy We are absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to be Head Boy and Head Girl of Cowes Enterprise College and to succeed the brilliant leadership team that came before us. The interview process was a challenging yet enhancing experience and we would like to congratulate the other applicants and look forward to working closely with them. The process allowed us to express our views and the direction we hope to see our sixth from heading and now we are in a position to deliver upon this: we can assure you that we will! Together we aim to continue to contribute to the ever increasing development of our academy; we have of course experienced this over the past 6 years and wish to ensure the generations succeeding us obtain the best possible education.
Kieran Wetherick (Head Boy) and Beth Pitts (Head Girl)
On Friday the 25th of January RAF cadets from Cowes CCF travelled to RAF Boscombe Down to spend time flying in a two seater Grobb Tutor aircraft. Each cadet spent up to 50 minutes flying with a qualified RAF pilot, learning how to take control of the aircraft themselves. The cadets also completed a range of aerobatics, from loop the loops to barrel rolls and stall turns. The next flying day will be the 1st March 2019. Interested in joining us? To find out more about the CCF, we will be giving presentations in the MIZ on Monday 4th February at 5pm
7TMH enjoyed their continental attendance breakfast on Monday morning in the conference room. The top attendance winners from this half term will also be invited to a breakfast with Mrs Harding. This weeks ‘start the day right’ time has been focused on choosing your words wisely and what saying sorry really means – as we found out that sticks and stones may break your bones … but words can hurt forever. Lottie Wilson, Riley Bristow and Ella Wotherspoon demonstrated to the rest of the year using an egg, an apple and a piece of paper. We looked at how using your words both face-to-face and online can affect others and that although you may say sorry; your words have a lasting effect. We all have a voice and a choice – choose wisely! Following on from choosing your words wisely, we have also been focusing on National Storytelling Week which happens in the last week of January every year. Stories can be powerful things. They help us to imagine. They can take us to strange and interesting places. They can enable us to relax and lose ourselves in the story. They help us to learn about the world, relationships, what we feel and what we believe. They don’t have to be true! Most fairy tales start with those famous words, ‘Once upon a time’. These words invite us to enter a world of imagination and discovery.
Year 10 Creative Media Production students have been really busy designing their interactive media sites around the theme of anti-bullying. We start producing these websites next week.
Duke of Edinburgh The Duke of Edinburgh bronze students began their expedition training last weekend. It was a very muddy and windy walk around Carisbrooke. The next walk is in Ventnor on Sunday 10th February.

OAT CHESS TOURNAMENT The first Ormiston Academy Chess Tournament was held this week. Three chess player from each school were invited to compete in an on-line tournament. The 10 games were timed and competitive; all players were enthusiastic, polite and funny in the chat. Our representatives were Oliver Bradley, Bowie Brennan and Thomas Bevan. Oliver started with a 3 game winning streak, earning him several awards, including the Sneaky Knight and Sneaky Queen. Bowie won a game in five moves earning him the Quick Knockout award. Thomas also won a Sneaky Queen award. All our players won at least half their games. In the end Cowes Enterprise, college placed a respectable 6th out of 12 schools.
As Oliver was the highest placed player from Cowes, he has been invited to compete in the Champions tournament in February. We wish him luck. It was a fun day and next time, now we all know how it works, we can hopefully involve more people.
