Friday 3rd May

Dear parents and carers,

We have had an exciting week at Cowes. Sixty of our Year 7 and 8 students have had the opportunity to take part in the Junior Maths Challenge this week. The students involved have been puzzling their way through mathematical challenges which aim to stimulate mathematical problem solving. It was lovely hearing from students involved personally that they really relished the challenge. 300,000 students of Year 8 and under age take part nationally each year and it is great that so many of our students also joined this event - well done to you all. With just three weeks to go until the first written GCSE exams, we are all supporting the Year 11s and Year 13s in the final stages of their GCSE and A level preparation. In particular, so far this term we have had GCSE Music practical and PE moderation. Congratulations to all our students for showing great focus, hard work and resilience. We are very proud of everything our Year 11s and Year 13s have achieved over the past five and seven years and wish them all every success in their examinations. We are excited at the results our students will hopefully be gaining through their hard work. As we reach the final stages we are looking to reward our students who have worked tirelessly throughout their time at the school and those meeting personal goals in these latter stages. Well done to you all and keep the good work up right to the end – what a difference the hard work makes. I continue to enjoy my parent surgeries as meeting parents and hearing your thoughts is key for me. This term my parent surgeries continue on Tuesday afternoons. Please either email dharrison@cowesec.org or phone the school on 01983 203103 asking for Donna Harrison to book a pre-booked slot. With best wishes, Rachel Kitley

SAFEGUARDING Keeping your child safe online There are so many resources for parents to support in keeping children safe online. The website below provides lots of useful resources for parents to give advice on issues such as healthy screen time and sleep to important safety information.

ATTENDANCE #AttendanceMatters.

Thank you for your continued support in ensuring your child attends school regularly. There is clear impact on levels of academic achievement and attendance to school. Thank you for supporting us to support your child in achieving their best every day.

https://parentzone.org.uk/ digitalparenting

‘Digital Parenting is a free online safety guide, created by The Vodafone Foundation and Parent Zone. It is packed with important safety information and expert advice on issues such as healthy screen time and sleep, with content relating from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 4.’ If any parents or carers would like any support with safeguarding concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Academy reception who will put you in contact with the Safeguarding team.

Parents should telephone the academy on 01983 203103 and select Option 1 before 8.30am on each day of absence, informing of the reason of absence and when their child will be returning to the academy, leaving a message on the voicemail. Phone calls need to be made every day of the student's absence. Parents are required to send a letter of explanation of absence when their child returns to school. This should be handed into reception. This letter should detail the duration and reason for absence.

UKMT MATHS CHALLENGE Well done to the Year 7 and 8 students who were in the Junior Maths Challenge earlier this week over 75 students sat the paper. The answer sheets have been sent to UKMT, initial results should be within the next 6 weeks. A big thank you to Mr Foster for organising, the site team for setting up the tables and chairs and thanks to Mr Johnson and Mr Wrenn for invigilating.

3G PITCH UPDATE Work continues to progress on our 3G pitch. Larger images and previous updates can be viewed on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

YEAR 7 AND YEAR 8 MUSIC From Tuesday7th May, the music curriculum for years 7 and 8 will be delivered through two fully immersive days of high quality professional instruction and workshops. The music drop down days will involve practical music making and widening musical experiences from professional musicians and highly experienced specialist music teachers. The full day sessions will facilitate deep exploration of musical concepts and ensure that students keen to extend their performance and composition skills have access to expert support and guidance. The music drop down days will take place in the final half term of this year. The sessions previously used for music will be contain PSHCE lessons to ensure that students develop their employability, social, collaboration skills and develop debating experience through the exploration of ethical and topical issues. This is a temporary measure as we are currently in the process of recruiting specialist music teachers for September 2019.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH NEWS At the weekend, 23 students took part in their bronze Duke of Edinburgh award and passed their practice expedition! Well done everyone.

They got lost‌ but found their way back!

They cooked meals and pitched tents in the wind. Despite being hungry and tired, they kept going.

#getinvolved

Everyone had a great time learning news skills and challenging themselves!

There are some great opportunities available at school if you choose to take them!
