Dear parents and carers, How lovely to be able to write to you on World Smile Day which has been fully celebrated here! We have combined this with Earl Mountbatten Hospice's GoYellow day and spent today celebrating the concept of living life to the full.

This week has been all about living life to the full. We were pleased to welcome Nick Hudson, OAT CEO into the academy. He was so impressed with firstly our fantastic results, but secondly the calm, purposeful learning atmosphere we saw in all parts of the school as we walked around. The students really did us proud and they were an absolute credit. Nick was particularly impressed to see our developments across the Languages Department, our new English Year 7 curriculum in action and also our Year 7 Accelerate class and the exceptional progress the group are making.

On Thursday we had our first Local Governing Body meeting of the year and welcomed the new Chair of Governors Ken Lloyd. Ken has already been so supportive of all the work we do here and I look forward to working with him closely in the future. Prior to the LGB meeting we had a very productive progress board meeting looking at our academy improvement priorities. Governors were reassured at the excellent progress we are making in all areas.

On Wednesday evening we welcomed Year 7 and 8 parents to our first information evening in our drive to improve parental communication further and offer parents opportunities to meet staff. Thank you to all parents who joined us this week and we hope that this was useful. I was unable to attend our information evening as I was representing the school at the SERFCA Isle of Wight Lord-Lieutenant Awards to celebrate our teacher Julie Crane's extensive and excellent work with the CCF. Congratulations Major Crane on this very well deserved award.

A reminder that I will be holding parent surgeries twice weekly on a Tuesday afternoon from 1pm – 2.30pm and from 3.30pm – 5.30pm to enable parents to get to know me and discuss the work of the school with me directly. Attendance is by pre-booked appointments only. Please either email dharrison@cowesec.org or phone the school on 01983 203103 asking for Donna Harrison to book in a slot in advance of each Tuesday.

FORTHCOMING INFORMATION EVENINGS

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING ADMISSIONS We are opening the consultation for the proposed change to the Admissions Policy 2020-2021 on Monday 1st October.

In accordance with the DfE’s 2014 statutory ‘Schools Admissions Code’ guidance the Local Governing Body of Cowes Enterprise College is consulting on the Admissions Arrangements for September 2020 because changes are proposed. The amendments are: 

To reduce the Published Admission Number at Cowes Enterprise College from 270 to 210 places in Year 7 with effect from September 2020. This means that the number of places available for children in Year 7 in 2020 and all subsequent Year 7 cohorts will be 210.



For children who already have a place at the school in other year groups there will be no proposed change. This is the only proposed change to the admission criteria, all other criteria, including oversubscription, will remain the same.

A full version of the proposed changes to the admission arrangements, as well as the rationale behind them, is available to view on the academy website www.cowesec.org or hard copy from the school office.

Today at the Academy in support of Mountbatten staff and students were invited to wear mufti with as many of us wearing yellow items as possible.

It was a joy to see so much yellow around the Academy and so many students in mufti to support such a fantastic cause.

We raised £796.60!

We also celebrated World Smile Day today and all staff and students were given ‘Smile Cards’ to share what makes us smile and what we are grateful for. There was such a lovely atmosphere with so much yellow, many winning smiles and acts of kindness.

The Noel Turner Physics Festival Thursday 18th October 2018 This year we are again delighted to host the Noel Turner Physics Festival here at Cowes on the 18th October. This year it's even bigger and better than last, so it will mean some changes to the normal routine on the day for parents and carers to note.

Our students should come to school as normal on Thursday 18 th; they will register with their form tutors (although some may be in different rooms). From 9.00am to 11.00am, all of our students will then have exclusive access to the Festival.

Year 7 will have a special show of 'Dangerous Science' - bangs, smoke, flames and more with Wonderstruck. Other students will attend a keynote speech from Tom Warrender of Medical Mavericks, covering both careers in the health sector and a health and fitness element linked to their “Challenge the Champions” sports and fitness activities. Then all students will have time to explore the hands-on activities and talk to representatives from local, national and international companies and organisations including BAE Systems, GKN, IW Hospital Trust, Vikoma, IFPL and more.

Your children will not only gain some insights into why they learn about science in school and how it is used in the real world, but also through talking to the representatives from the organisations, can explore different routes from school into well-paid local employment. Many local industries struggle to recruit suitable employees - we want all our students to understand the opportunities and make the links between learning well in school and an interesting and rewarding career.

To allow students from other Island schools to also attend the Festival, we will complete the second session registration after 11.00am and those students who have their parents' permission may then study at home for the afternoon. Students who are unable to go home or whose parents would like us to look after them until the normal end of the day, will be attached to departments and involved in the activities including acting as guides or helpers.

We will shortly issue a letter with permission slip that will ask you what your child should do on the day. If we do not receive permission for home study, then your child will remain in the Academy until 2.45pm.

On Friday 28th October a group of Film, Media and Art students travelled to Watford to visit the Warner Bros. Studio Tour. While there we learnt about what goes in to the making of a film franchise as huge as Harry Potter. From how concept art is created and transformed into scale models, to set building and prop making. All had a wonderful time and are so proud of our students who were polite, courteous and well behaved.

The Victoria Cross, the George Dollery highest award for gallantry in the face Theo Bradley of the enemy that can be awarded to Bradley Spiers British and Commonwealth forces, was Toby Lucas th awarded for his action on 27 Maddison Etchell-Johnson September 1918 at the Battle of the Canal du Nord, near Flesquières, France.

REMINDERS & INFORMATION Attendance Attending is the first part of succeeding!

Students should be in the building and in their tutor class at 8.30am—any student arriving into this building after 8.30am will be considered as being late. We have had far too many students late to the Academy this week.

A reminder that the procedure to report a student absence is to call the main Academy number (01983 203103), select Option 1 and leave a message on the Student Absence Line before 8.30am. There is no direct number for the absence line. Phone calls need to be made every day of the student's absence.

The absence should be followed up with a letter detailing the duration and reason for absence on the student's return to the Academy.

Photo Consent and IT Agreements Thank you to everyone who has returned these to us already!

Photo Consent Forms and IT Agreements were given to students in Years 8—11 during tutor time two weeks ago.

Floating Bridge Shuttle Bus Autumn Term tickets are now available from Reception .

Tickets can be purchased online through Scopay in pack of 20 for £10. Once payment has been made online, students should request tickets from Reception.

Tickets are single use only, non-transferrable and non-refundable. Please note that lost tickets will need to be repurchased.

Students eligible for free school meals are able to request a pass to access the Floating Bridge Shuttle Bus for free.

If you have not already done so, please could you fill these in and return them to Reception as soon as possible?

The mini bus will travel between the Floating Bridge and Cowes Enterprise College every morning. The shuttle bus will be waiting in Medina Road, visible from the ferry.

The shuttle bus will leave Medina Road at 08.10am and then a second shuttle will leave Medina Road at 08.20am.

Drop off , collection and car park safety Please do not use the Academy car park to drop off and collect students withour prior agreement from the Academy for you to do so.

Drop off and collections should be made on Crossfield Avenue remembering that that no parking is permitted on the white ZigZag lines surrounding the pedestrian crossing outside the Academy.

Please could we also remind parents that the disabled bay spaces are for holders of valid Blue Badges only.

Uniform A reminder that piercings are not and never have been acceptable in a nose. There seems to be a few creeping in. A clear spacer must be worn or the stud removed.

Also a reminder that trousers need to be nonskinny and skirts rolled to the correct length.

Safeguarding Safeguarding is something that we are all committed to at Cowes Enterprise College, and is at the heart of all we do. We will have a safeguarding feature in our newsletter every week.

We absolutely value parental contact with the academy, if you wish to see a member of Academy staff at the end of the day please enter through the main Reception area as an appointment will need to be made for you. This is to ensure the safety of our staff and students on site.

A group of Year 9 students are busy getting on with their Duke of Edinburgh awards.

On Tuesday, five students began their cookery skills class making overnight oats, scones, cheesecake, fruit salad and chocolate brownies. We can confirm that they were all delicious!

Mr Harding Literacy Teacher What do you like most about teaching at Cowes Enterprise College?

The children. Since starting at CEC I have been incredibly impressed with their resilience, behaviour and manners. It’s also clear that the processes and systems in place to keep the children safe and to maximise learning opportunities are thoroughly embedded across the school – making teaching a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

I have equally been made to feel very welcome by every member of staff and already feel part of the CEC team.

What made you want to teach Literacy?

Having spent many years in Primary Education in both teaching and leadership and supporting colleagues across the island, I developed a passion for teaching literacy across the curriculum. It became clear that, for some, an initial interest and talent in subjects such as DT, science and creative arts was becoming more difficult the older they got. This was as a result of not being able to access the literacy content of the curriculum, creating barriers that put them off. Through working as an English writing moderator for Hampshire and coaching other teachers, I desperately wanted to develop children’s confidence in English, enabling them to succeed in any area that interests them in the future.

What was your childhood aspiration?

As a child, I had a rather mercurial personality. I regularly changed what I wanted to do – often as a result of a new fad or something I had read about. That said, being a paramedic was always a profession that I came back to more regularly than others!

Who is your favourite author (and why?)

I am currently reading ‘The Island ‘ by Victoria Hislop but over the summer I also discovered some of Stephen Clarke’s less well-known books about French history.

But also sitting on my bedside table is the latest book by my good friend, Kieran Larwood. Kieran is a local author who won the Times/Chicken House award for his first book, ‘Freaks’ and recently the Blue Peter award for Best Children’s book.
