NEWSLETTER Friday 6th September Dear parents and carers, A warm welcome back and a special welcome to parents of Year 7 and Year 12 students who are becoming part of the CEC family for the first time. We enjoyed welcoming our Year 7s to the academy with their family breakfast and were delighted to have so many parents join us for this special time together. The Year 7s have settled into life here very quickly. Our new maritime and ‘Everyone Matters’ curriculum have launched and my personal highlight of the week has been my own teaching, where I have been teaching over 150 Year 7s about resilience and how to confidently counter discrimination.
You may have seen news reports of our excellent summer exam results this year. I would like to congratulate all our 2018-19 Year 11 and 13 students on their successes. There was pride and joy in the academy on the two results days and students really have excelled. At GCSE, results were excellent across all subject areas and we maintained the significant C Change made last year. We await our Progress 8 score from the government, but anticipate it being strongly positive, a mark of the excellent progress our students made in their 5 year journey. At A Level, 30% of all grades were at A or A* and 5% of our students achieved university places to Oxbridge and Cambridge, the number of students gaining places at Russell Group universities doubled and students successfully gained university medical places and prestigious apprenticeships. So strong were our results that Minister for Schools, Lord Agnew, chose to comment on them, saying they were “an impressive set of results” and that “results day marks the moment so many young people will make choices that can shape the rest of their lives, so whatever path they choose, every pupil at Cowes Enterprise College should do so full of confidence.” This academic year I will be continuing to hold parent surgeries twice weekly on a Tuesday afternoon from 1pm – 2.30pm and from 3.30pm – 5.30pm to enable parents to meet with me personally. Attendance is by pre-booked appointments only. Please either email dharrison@cowesec.org or phone the school on 01983 203103 asking for Donna Harrison to book in a slot in advance of each Tuesday. WELCOME TO COWES ENTERPRISE COLLEGE
Welcome to Year 7 English!
We had a fabulous Welcome Breakfast Ceremony on Wednesday morning, where we welcomed our new Year 7 students and their families into our Academy family.
We hope you enjoyed our lessons this week: we’ve enjoyed meeting you all! In English, you will take lessons in Literary Heritage (Literature,) and Grammar (this looks more like the Literacy lessons you may be used to from Primary.) For our Literary Heritage, we start by studying the novel Oliver Twist. Before summer, some of you may have collected our Further Reading list, which you can see below. You may enjoy working through some of these texts with your parents at home. Further reading helps to give you a fuller understanding of the books you are studying, and will bode you well throughout your years at Cowes Enterprise College! If you have any questions about what we are learning, my name is Mrs Calloway, and I lead our Yr7 and Yr8 Curriculum. You might hear us call this ‘Mastery English.’ This is because our subject is all about ‘mastering’ what you can do. It’s a bit like learning to ride a bike: sometimes we try things again and again to strengthen our abilities and understanding. This is the same of ‘Grammar.’ It’s important we teach you to truly get to grips with this, so you can learn to read and write to the absolute best of your ability. We’re excited for the year ahead: you’ve got lots of brilliant learning to come! Enjoy your second week and get stuck in Mrs Calloway
Students were welcomed with a personal handshake from the Principal.
LAUCH OF NEW ‘EVERYONE MATTERS’ CURRICULUM This week saw the first sessions of our brand new, bespoke Everyone Matters (or "E1M") curriculum. Our E1M curriculum aims to broaden student horizons and enrich lives while preparing them as responsible citizens for the modern world.
