Remembering the R.D. Cole Manufacturing Company Emily Kimbell, Director Newnan-Coweta Historical Society Everyone in Coweta County is familiar with the abandoned Caldwell Tank site. For years, the site has been known as the “eyesore” headed into downtown Newnan.

Now that demolition is nearly complete for the site, the moment brings a sense of loss. No more “zombies’’ roaming through the dilapidated brick or scenes from an alternate, dystopian world being portrayed. However, the demolition of the site is not so much a loss for the movie industry, which has used it as a location for several shows and movies (Walking Dead, Hunger Games, etc.), but rather a historical loss for the county. The site, now branded as 57 East Broad, was the original site of the R.D. Cole Manufacturing Company, one of the most successful and influential companies of its time. The Newnan-Coweta Historical Society (NCHS) has worked to preserve the history of the site through a publication with Arcadia Publishing. For nearly two years, NCHS has worked alongside the Blackburn family, who are descendants of Mathew Cole, to publish a pictorial history of the company. On April 11, 2022, Images of America: R.D. Cole Manufacturing Company will be officially released for public purchase with a book launch at the Historic Train Depot on April 30 from 4 to 6 p.m. It is only fitting (and entirely coincidental) that the book comes at the same time the last bit of brick is torn down to be saved for future projects. The following is an excerpt from the introduction of the book and gives a brief overview of the history of R.D. Cole and the information contained within the book’s pages: “When the Cole family moved to Coweta County in 1849, the family had no intention of living in the area permanently. However, a broken wagon that forced the family to set up a shop in the area for a while became the inspiration for the creation of a small, private wood shop. In 1854, R.D. Cole Sr. established the firm of Cole & Barnes as a sawmill. The company saw near immediate growth and began manufacturing sawmills, corn mills, boilers, and engines; contracting and constructing buildings and housing units; and eventually manufacturing steel, aluminum, and alloy. By the 1890s, R.D. Cole Manufacturing Company was the second largest water tower manufacturer in the United States. When R.D. Cole Manufacturing Company was sold in 1968, it was Coweta County’s oldest company at the time… Once established, the R.D. Cole Manufacturing Company contributed to Coweta County’s growth and solidified the county as a manufacturing center. Due in part to R.D. Cole Manufacturing Company’s success and the other business ventures of the Cole family, Newnan became one of the wealthiest cities in the country during the mid-1800s. So, are you getting my message yet? It does not matter what you read as long as you like it. There is truly something for everyone out there in big or smaller portions. I am just as likely to read an internet article or a 1,000 page book; it does not matter because I …. Just Read.

We all know those folks … the ones who have to buy the best of everything just so they can tell you all about it and show how good they are. Snobs, elitists, but whatever the term, they just have to tell you why their choices are the best and why you should be like them. In the world of reading, snobbery is alive and well with critics, pedants, publishers, social media (yikes), and others telling us who the hot author is or what new trend or movement we should all be chasing like dogs after the mailman. I choose not to bark just because the others do while I chase my own interests. So this month I am saying to you … Just Read. Isn’t the quote above so appropriate for today? Especially right now in this fragile world where we are all trying to find our balance? I love books of quotations and I always have. Sometimes I feel like it’s cheating when I read quotes by Emerson instead of books by Emerson. But, I LIKE reading them and it makes me happy. Short, succinct biographical passages are also in my wheelhouse. A gentleman named Paul Johnson has written several tomes which I actually read thoroughly several times that featured smaller portion sized life stories. Smaller portions or bigger portions … just get to the table. As a child, I was taken to a professional wrestling match by my father. My dad knew the promoter and we got to go backstage before the matches to meet the wrestlers. It was really cool but one thing I did not get was that the guys who were fighting in the main event were actually sitting together in the back talking like they were friends. Both were physically imposing men who could not have been nicer to a young boy of six years old. Guess what I got for Christmas that year?? I began receiving wrestling magazines in the mail every month and I devoured them. The writing was actually pretty good and I learned some cool words. One of the other wrestlers was reading a book of vocabulary words in the back; he told my dad that he was a heel (bad guy) and that he was learning new words so he could better insult the fans. It made me want to be a heel! I eventually stopped getting wrestling magazines and moved into comic books. Now, these guys could write and tell a story! I never could draw, but I loved using my imagination and the world of superheroes opened my mind to characterization, plotlines, foreshadowing, and all those nifty terms you pay a univer-

Did You Know? • 61% of low-income families do not have a single piece of age-appropriate reading material in their home? • 1/3rd of Georgia’s children start school unprepared to learn? • 75% of Georgia’s students who are poor readers in the third grade will remain poor readers in high school?
How Do Books Help? The more words a child hears, the larger the child’s vocabulary and the larger the child’s vocabulary, the more likely the child will be a proficient reader. I write the SONS of Thunder The Letter on various milestone birthdays or major life changes. The Letter’s themes remain fairly constant. Some things, values, should not change. Youngest will be graduating from Newnan High School. Where, and what, he does next is undecided. He is an old soul in the truest sense so I am not worried. Middle is taking time off from college. He’s working full time at Smith and Davis Clothing. I envy his employee discount and am proud of how he is getting his footing with this change.. As I write this, Eldest is packing up and heading to Texas. Fort Hood to be exact for his first assignment after graduating from Armor School at Fort Benning. 4-9 Cav, 2nd Brigade 1 Cavalry Division, is his new family. An appropriate time for The Letter:

Boys, A few subjects I want to cover with you as you head out on these new adventures: Your Name: It is yours and yours alone. Honor it. By that I mean keep your word, even if it hurts because of some unforeseen problem. So be careful in giving your word, but honor that commitment. Be the type that if you tell someone the world is flat, they are seriously going to pause and think about it. Friends: Choose wisely. You will be known by your friends. Find friends who will stand by you no matter what; who will guard your back; who will climb the mountaintop of success with you; but tumble down with you into the deepest valley. You will ask me how to find those friends – you must be one first. Work: Be willing to sign your name to anything you do. By that, I mean take pride in everything you do. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Find mentors, the ones who have been there, and ask for their help. True mentors will be honored to help you. That doesn’t mean you always have to follow their advice, but seek as much advice as you can. In the end, the final decision is always up to you. Remember that work is just that, work. So find something you are interested in and enjoy it. If you don’t, do something else. Work is a part of life, but don’t make your life your work. At the end of your life, no one is going to count how many hours you put into work. But they will remember the hours you put into your life and what you did with them. Passion: Find something you love and do it, work, hobbies, and anything else. God has given you special talents and abilities, discover them and use them. Tied to your passion is your purpose. God has put you on earth for a reason. Spend your life exploring His purpose for you and do it. Money: Learn to live by the 80-10-10 rule. Give away 10 percent of everything you make to your church and other worthwhile charities. Save 10 percent. Learn to live on the remaining 80 percent. Learn the difference between a “want” and a “need.” You need to eat, have clothes and shelter. Take care of the have-tos first, then think about the want-tos. Except for major purchases, like a car or house, always be able to pay cash. Avoid credit debt at all costs. Life: God, the master of the universe, does not care about a person’s color or their bank account. So neither should you. God cares about what you did while on earth with the talents He gave you. And one day you will give an accounting to that effect. Start preparing now. Respect everyone, but bow to no man save one, a Jewish carpenter. The most important decisions you will make in life are your educational path, your career, finding God’s purpose and whom you marry. We will work on the first three, but regarding the fourth, find your own Little Black Dress and you will have done well indeed. Love, Dad

Newnan High School Chorale Benefit May 1 at Nixon Centre
Masterworks CARES!
As most of you are aware, Newnan is still suffering from the effects of the F4 tornado during March 2021. Our community has rallied, and there is great work happening. Many folks have been able to move forward. However, it will take years for the community to fully recover. As you know, our beloved Newnan High School took a drastic hit. The music building and its contents, along with the auditorium, are just two casualties of the storm.
The Masterworks Community Chorale would like to give back to the NHS choral department by presenting a benefit concert on May 1, 2022, at The Donald Nixon Performing and Visual Arts Centre. The Nixon Centre is located at 1523 Lower Fayetteville Road, Newnan, GA 30265. Our special guests will be a sampling of the many students who have benefited from the strong choral program that is tradition and continues at Newnan High School. The Masterworks Chorale, along with our guests, will demonstrate how all music, and in this case, choral music, is invaluable to the education of our students and how it provides a lifelong experience. We hope you will join us for an afternoon of music and fun and help us show the community how important the arts are, not only to each person, but also to a thriving community. There will be an opportunity to give at the end of the concert. Tickets will soon be available: https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/thenixoncentre/5497 The ticket will not be your donation, that will be taken separately at the end of the Benefit Concert on May 1. Don’t Miss the Music! If you would like to donate before the concert, make your check to The Patrons of the Centre. On the For line, list NHS Chorale Benefit and send to Masterworks Chorale, 15 Inland Court, Newnan, GA 30263, 770-844-8278. ■

Interview
with Winston
Skinner
Briefly describe yourself and what you do/did. I was born in Newnan but grew up in several places in Georgia. From the time I was a fourth grader, I knew I wanted to write for a living, so I went into journalism. Worked as a reporter and editor for almost 40 years. Still doing freelance writing, editing and PR. I also was a country pastor for 24 years and still preach when asked, marry people and conduct funerals. Best piece of advice you’ve received. My Granny Carney had a saying, “Each to his own notion.” It’s become my byword. I don’t have to agree with other people, and they don’t have to agree with me. Life goes on...
If I had it to do over … I wouldn’t change much. I love journalism -- writing, reporting, interviewing. I even like photography. My time as a pastor was very rewarding, too. Lynn and I got married halfway through college. We don’t recommend that to folks generally, but it certainly was the right path for us. You are going on an extended solo trip. What three albums and three books would you take? Albums -- “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Journey’s Greatest Hits,” Whitney Houston’s double album. Books -- my Jerusalem Bible, “Gone With the Wind,” something about the U.S. first ladies Tell us one thing about yourself that few people know. My hair grayed early. It runs in my family. When I was a young reporter, people thought I was older than I was. (Being married and

a father didn’t hurt.) I was able, I think, to get people to trust me and take me more seriously because I seemed to be five to seven years older than I was. You are hosting a dinner party for six. What five people, living or dead, would you invite and why? Eleanor of Aquitaine, Margaret Mitchell, Jacqueline Onassis, Walter Cronkite, Dot Moore. All people I think would be interesting and have unique viewpoints. (The only one I actually know is Dot, and she is the life of every party she attends.) Because I follow and believe in Jesus, I’d invite him, too. He might help me out with some loaves and fish if there’s not enough food. Name an as yet unfulfilled dream. I’ve got some notes for a biography of first lady Letitia Tyler. She is pretty obscure but lived in and through a fascinating time in history. Maybe one day I’ll have time to meander around Virginia to collect the rest of what I need and then write. Also, I’d love to travel to Russia. If you weren’t doing what you are, you would be … Probably bored. I like what I do. I am pretty good at teaching, I think, and come from a family of educators. I’m thankful, however, that I was able to be a journalist. Your go-to food. Too many. Pizza, pomegranates, ice cream, Swiss cheese with crackers.

Favorite movies(s): “Gone With the Wind” -- I acknowledge its faults, but I saw it as a boy and still am fascinated every time I see it, especially in a theater. Second, “Munster, Go Home.” After a long, tiring day, I can pop it in the VCR and laugh. Dogs or cats? Interesting question. For most of life, cats. We got a Pomeranian, Kookie, a few years ago. He is my executive assistant and rides with me in the car when I am out and about. Also, he and I walk from our house to town and back most days. Your favorite quote and why: Back to Granny’s “Each to his own notion.” It just fits so many situations. Name something that you are extremely glad you did or accomplished.

The people I got to meet and interview. Erskine Caldwell was interesting, and several in his family became friends. Christian Slater didn’t seem to take himself too seriously. And my first real newspaper interviewee was Norma Gunby, who was a special friend who shared my passion for genealogy. What advice would you give your younger self just starting out on their own. Take your work seriously, but take life more seriously. Be sure to take time for the people who love you -- they will be there when other things are no longer part of your life. _______________________________

News and Musings … Notes from here, there and the Internet … Employee Spotlight: Deputy Sheriff Michelle Murray is the first Black female deputy employed by the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office. With almost 4 decades of service to her community, DS Murray is the longest tenured employee with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office. We are extremely grateful for her many years of service and hope she has no plans on giving up her spot on top of the “longest tenured” list any time soon. [

Well, it looked like someone thought there was a drive-thru at popular downtown eatery Christy’s Cafe. Turns out the damage to the sign, fencing, sidewalk and stairs was all due to a police chase. An officer performed a PIT maneuver nearby, sending a fleeing suspect’s car into the cafe. Suspect was arrested and Christy’s is open for business. [

Scholarship Recipient Gabe Bowles of Newnan High School and CARE Committee Chair Nora Ann Wood. His choice to pursue a career in education was influenced by two teachers at Northgate, who, he said, were able to connect with their students. “If it were not for them, I would be lost in my career path,” Bomar noted. Assessing his time at the Atlanta university, Bomar said, “Everything is going great here at Georgia State University. I’m loving my classes, and I’ve made many good friends already.” “I’m very happy I came here,” he added. CARE scholarship recipient Gabriel Bowles is attending Jacksonville State University and majoring in Music Education. His goal is to work with all students, but he has expressed a special interest in students “who never thought they could learn music.” “In my opinion, there are very few things in life more important than music and the ability to make it yourself,” Bowles explained. “Like Hans Christian Anderson said, ‘Where words fail, music speaks,’ and I want to help everyone to speak.” Bowles said that “things at JSU are going great,” and he has enjoyed “every moment of it: from the grueling music theory homework to the exhilarating sound of the Marching Southerners.” CARE will award scholarships to the 2022 class of recipients at the East Coweta, Newnan, and Northgate at Honors Nights in April and May. Scholarship Committee Chair Nora Ann Wood coordinates the year-long application and selection process with the East Coweta, Newnan, and Northgate Guidance Departments; CEC’s Teacher Pipeline Program; and the local chapters of Future Georgia Educators. CARE scholarship committee members are Past President Dana Anthony, Secretary Jean Cotton, President-Elect Sherry Taylor, and President Sherry Warren.n ___________________

Our Featured Artist for April is Mr. David Puett!
David has been a professional musician for over 17 years. In 2004 he graduated from Atlanta Institute of Music’s rigorous music program. His degree was in Jazz, Rock & Classical styles, but David has proven to be one of the most versatile players in the region- multi-genre,multi instrumentalist. He is an instructor and studio manager at Musicology in Newnan as well as a staff musician and head of Youth Worship at East Newnan Baptist Church. David’s musical influence at a young age was provided by his father, who was also a guitarist. David learned a lot from watching and participating with his dad’s bands. David and his wife Lindsey have three fantastic daughters. Journey and Jaslyn are involved in the youth music program at their church. Jakota plays soccer on an Upward Soccer team David Puett’s signature style is evident - whether he’s recording, performing or teaching - his love and passion for music is a great contribution to our music community.

Remembering the R.D. Cole Manufacturing Co. continued from front page
Pictured is a rendering of the early R.D. Cole Manufacturing plant including the 24 X 36-foot wooden framed shop R.D. Cole originally used to conduct his business. Pictured here, circa 1890s, are the central members of the Cole family responsible for the development, growth, and success of the R.D. Cole Manufacturing Company. On the back row (left to right) stands Roy Nall Cole (Treasurer), Frank Bartow Cole (Engineer), and Edwin Marcus Cole (Manager Atlanta Office). On the front row (left to right) sits Madison Filmore Cole (General Manager) R.D.Cole, Jr. (Superintendent), Mathew Cole (Vice President) and R.D Cole, Sr.(President). However, the history of R.D. Cole Manufacturing Company is more than a story about a business and its products. It is the story of a family who was unafraid to start over despite encountering prior loss and who were willing to pour their life into the betterment of their community. The Cole family clearly loved Coweta County and was proud of where they lived. They treated their employees with relative fairness and kindness. Even today, over 165 years since the start of R.D. Cole Manufacturing Company and 50 years since its closing, people still recall fond memories of working for the manufacturer. Much of their wealth along with their business resources were donated to local charities and churches, and their craftsmanship and handiwork are still seen across the county from public government offices to private residences. R.D. Cole Manufacturing Company has always been a family affair. From the very beginning, R.D. Cole Sr. and his brother Mathew led the business, and the two brothers saw the company through its first fifty years plus. Mathew’s five sons continued the legacy and became instrumental in the development of the company, and for six more generations, members of the Cole family have worked at the family business. Every member of the family was a valuable contribution to the company’s success — sons learned the family business and took leadership positions, wives served on the board and owned stock, children worked in small capacities from even a young age. Even when the company sold out of the family’s hand, the memory and meaning of R.D. Cole Manufacturing Company remained. The Cole family has quite literally held onto the memories of the family business in the records, photographs, newspaper clippings, and documents that they have kept through generations for hundreds of years. These family documents… give just a small glimpse into the life of a family, a company, and a community…and shows how one person and one family can make a permanent difference in their community.” Copied from the introduction of Images of America: RD Cole Manufacturing by Emily Kimbell.
Pictured is a rendering of R.D. Cole Manufacturing Company in 1904 during its 50th year of operation.
Newnan-native, Emily Kimbell is the director of the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society and McRitchie-Hollis Museum. Emily is currently finishing her doctoral studies at Georgia State University, where she also teaches English Composition courses and is an active member of her community often seen on stage in local theatre productions and writing for local media outlets. n

The View
from the Pines with Jim Coleman This is so strange. It’s 5:30 A.M. on Saturday. It’s dark and chilly outside. I’m a little nervous because I’m about to embark on an adventure this morning that I haven’t experienced in two and a half years, V A C A T I O N. That’s right. I’m about to get in the car, eat at Waffle House, drive seven hours to Florida, check into a hotel, eat the free breakfast and then stand in line to board a floating petri dish with 3,000 people from God knows where that I’ve never laid eyes on (yes, the ones I have affectionately referred to in the past as the “Jaycee’s from Dothan”), only to prepare to float around in the ocean for six days … and I’m excited. I’m starting to understand how the Israelites felt right after the locusts and the angel of death. (I’m just praying that God doesn’t open the ocean up on this trip).
I packed yesterday. I found colorful silk shirts, suitable for a tropical vacation, still in the dry cleaning bags from 2019. I found a bathing suit that I really like but the liner on the inside is dry rotted. I had to actually try on my own clothes to see if they still fit. Most of them did, but I had to deal with the realization that the combination of the COVID 15 pounds with slightly out-of-style garments and the three extra years, should make me blend in with the aforementioned crowd seamlessly. I do, however, have a rhetorical question. Is it tacky to wear a T-shirt on vacation from a place that’s more glamorous than the place you are going? In addition to the COVID 15 pounds, I also quit smoking cold turkey about 8 weeks ago. Everybody congratulates me and tells me how much better I’m going to feel. I’m still waiting! I will give them this, food tastes much better, which is why I eat everything in sight. My brain is not telling me to start smoking again, it’s telling me that the perfect addition to my diet last week would be an entire box of Girl Scout Thin Mints. I’m at the age now where either smoking or obesity is going to get me so, what the hell? I haven’t started back to the gym in Newnan yet for fear of COVID so I’m waiting to see what excuse my brain comes up with for not walking upstairs on a floating city to get some exercise.
I think the hardest thing is to realize that I have become one of those people I used to make fun of. So, I’m off in a few minutes with my wrinkled shorts that are too tight, my shirt untucked to cover up my belly, a suitcase that is half as tall as I am, packed with too many things that I believe will make me stand out as slightly more attractive than others, a straw hat, sunglasses, spray sunscreen and 3 books … not a pretty picture. Still, I can’t express how excited I am to be getting back to life and getting out of this house and I recommend it for everyone. I still can’t decide. Does one wear a “Maui” T-shirt in Nassau? Jim Coleman is twice retired as a financial advisor and flight attendant. A theatre geek, musician, arts administrator and preservationist, he lived a relatively obscure life until he crossed paths with Corby Winters. Jim chose Newnan as his new forever home five years ago and is dedicated to making our community the best it can be. ■

Mr. Personality Newnan’s Goodwill Ambassador
April, the month for April Fool’s Day and Easter Sunday. I am truly ready for some Springtime weather, yes indeed. I am looking forward to all the coming events on the Courthouse Square, such as the Farmer’s Market, and Market Day. There’s a lot going on at the Courthouse Square, so much more is on its way as well. The process is indeed a tad slow for many reasons. However, we seem to be getting past COVID-19 slowly as well. I have been adding more people to my Spiritual Love Letters Ministry, my God-given purpose for being placed here on Earth. Yes, my expiration date is indeed coming closer and I can hear the angels sing. This fact, such as my coming death, is indeed a motivation to make the most of what time I have left. Truly a cause to celebrate with joy and much happiness, I am still experiencing the kindness of others everywhere I happen to be. This outpouring of love and acceptance that has been ongoing daily for the better part of nine years is truly a God-given blessing and is even now increasing daily. My book of the month, which has two titles and is 27 years old, is: Science as a Candle, The Deep Demon Haunted World. It was written In 1995 and although it had spoken to the hearts and minds of its time, today the contents are pretty much ignored. I saw that there is much wisdom for the wise in the thoughtprovoking book. The author, Carl Sagan, said we should totally question everything. That we should be more critical in our thinking and in applying the art of skepticism and all that we are told by “the authorities.” He also takes on the UFOs theory, faith healers, religion and all things that have no hard evidence of being proven to be real. Wanting something to be true does not make it true. On page 201 is a chapter on the fine art of Baloney Detection. I would suggest a close reading of each chapter to be followed by the processing of its contents fully before moving on to the next chapter. This is a good method to apply to all such books. The chapter on page 337, House On Fire, discusses the dumbing-down of our school system from grade school to college. Sagan was truly concerned of the very real danger of humankind returning to superstition and ignorance, going backwards into the Dark Ages. I recommend this book for those given to self discipline, critical thinking and a healthy skeptical outlook. The Old Guard is indeed dying out with no replacement in sight. Until next time, peace, love and much respect, Mr. Personality. _______________________________

Journey
with Samantha Brazie
Aloha, Paper readers! Spring is upon us, and isn’t it ah-mazing! Warm weather makes me think of traveling right on out to the beach. Vacations are a great way to get away (if only temporarily) from our problems, our worries and even the mundaneness in life. The last vacation I went on, I really got some time to actually sit with my thoughts and work through some issues I’ve carried with me for years
and although it doesn’t sound like something one would want to do on vacation, it was actually pretty perfect timing. So this month’s column is going to be all about reflection. My friends, there is a huge gap between reflection and rumination. To me, reflection is giving serious thought on behaviors, situations and circumstances of some moment or time in life. Rumination is going over something repeatedly and sitting in that moment or time in your life. Reflection is learning life lessons, rumination is stewing in time. The tough part about reflection is to allow yourself to be open enough to be raw in your emotions and continue to feel all the feelings involved with that time of your life. I have honestly learned more from the most painful situations in my life than I ever have from the most happy. Having to run my electric stove to give my kids heat because we could not afford the gas bill 20 years ago is something I will never forget … and something I vowed would never happen again. Allowing myself to feel that and remember why I took the
PVH Distribution Center in Palmetto Now Hiring
steps I did while my kids were younger to get out of poverty helps me to teach my kids those lessons so that hopefully they will never have to learn them for themselves. What I have learned is that healing from something does not mean you’re not vulnerable to reliving it. It just means you’ve forgiven yourself and whoever else was involved in the situation, and you are not beating yourself up anymore. And by the way – if you have not figured out how to forgive the other person, you are only hurting yourself, just in case you don’t realize that. Most of the time the other person has moved on and is not bothered at all by that past memory. When you refuse to forgive yourself or the other person, there is a piece of you that you are refusing to move on … you are stuck in that time, ruminating. The past will always be there for you to reflect on and learn from … that is a fact. Let it go, shake free and move on. I can’t tell you how amazing it felt for me that once I realized I had been holding onto something for over ten years of my Journey, I had the ability to let it go. It was hard to feel those feelings again and go back to the vulnerable place I was once in, but once I saw what I had been doing to myself subconsciously and forgave myself and the other person – I felt free. A feeling I wish for every one of you. Until next time, friends. “Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.” - Søren Kierkegaard Questions? Comments? But I’m also learning that if I don’t step out in faith and get out of my comfort zone, I will miss out on so much that the Lord is calling me to be and to do. Like choosing to adopt. Without that leap of faith, we would not have our precious daughter and the ministry of RACE for the Orphans would not have started.

“Swing us out! Swing us out!” our kids often yell while tubing at the lake. They want my husband to turn the boat quickly to the right and then to the left so they will go outside the wake.
In the words of Steven Curtis Chapman: “We’ll travel long, over mountains so high We’ll go through valleys so low Still through it all we’ll find that This is the greatest journey that the human heart will ever see The love of God will take us far beyond our wildest dreams.” (The Great Adventure) Or in the words of Jesus, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10) I need to remind myself of these things every single day. I hope that you, too, will join God in the great adventure He has planned for you.

Now getting outside the wake will bring highs, lows, and sometimes even wipeouts, but that’s LIFE!
I have realized two things after watching this over and over: Staying within the wake is easier, more comfortable, less risky. And going outside the wake is harder, but it’s where the real adventure begins. Then it hit me. God often calls us out of our comfort zones in order to glorify Him and live the great adventure He wants us to experience. Yet if we decide to stay “within the wake” and not take the risk of going “outside the wake,” we often miss out on so many things.
Kelly Preston is a nurseturned-stay-at-home-mom to four amazing and energetic children. Though she sometimes forgets to buy toilet paper amidst their busy schedules, Kelly finds time to run RACE for the Orphans, a non-profit focused on supporting adoptive families. She loves Jesus, people, a really good book, and pondering the little things.

JOINTS
Everyone has their “go-to” place to eat. It might be with linen tablecloths and waiters in ties, or where you throw peanuts on the floor and carve your initials in the wooden tables. Whatever and wherever, it’s your “joint.” There are lots of these places around here, and we’re out to find them all in The Joints column. And yes, all are White Monkey approved. Look for an extensive list of our joints on our website …
The
Featured Joint … Modern Thai
I am constantly surprised at the number of great restaurants tucked away in some stripmall. Sandwiched between an insurance agent and a tanning/nail salon, you open a door to, well, Nirvana. That’s especially true if you like Thai. Welcome to Modern Thai in Tyrone, Georgia. To quote: Our chef, Darunee, has been learning how to cook authentic Thai food from her mom since she was a little girl. She helped her family run a Thai restaurant for over 20 years. The name of the restaurant “Modern Thai” is the same as her mother’s, based in San Francisco. Her mom is now retired, but she would like to carry on that name and bring the original recipes and experience to the city of Tyrone and the Atlanta area. Open for lunch and dinner, this is the type of restaurant you want to keep coming back to because of the mouth-watering options. Each dish is unique and the descriptions alone are worth the trip. Just a couple we tried at the last visit included Panang Beef, or “Sliced beef tenderloin sautéed in panang curry topped with minced kaffir lime leaf and bell pepper served with jasmine blue rice.”
Next up for me will be the Spaghetti Keo Mao: “Stir fried spaghetti, shrimp, scallop, calamari, sweet onion, bell peppers, green beans with fresh chili, garlic & Holy basil.” And for an appetizer, since I am a sucker for calamari: “Deep fried calamari rings with tentacles in salt and pepper batter served with pineapple chili sauce” Let’s put it this way, coming out after lunch I looked over at Youngest and said, “wow, that was really good.” I am looking forward to taking the Little Black Dress. Closed Mondays; Tuesday - Friday Lunch: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Dinner 5-9 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday Noon to 9 p.m. 54 Carriage Oaks Drive, Tyrone • 678-834-5403 • modernthaiga.com

PAPER
Real Estate
with Jess Barron
Appraisals and Home Buying Editor’s note: This article has run previously, but continues to be relevant as appraisals are a problem in today’s market when prices are rising rapidly. If you have purchased a home before or been around the real estate business you have probably heard of the appraisal process. This is something the average person typically does not give much thought to. In the real estate world, the appraisal can be the make or break part of a transaction. An appraisal can even be a “bad word” in real estate transactions. A home appraisal is an unbiased estimate of the true, or fair market, value of what a home is worth. Lenders order an appraisal during the mortgage loan process so that there is an objective way to assess the home’s market value and ensure that the amount of money requested by the borrower is appropriate. Some people believe that the true market value is when a seller and buyer agree on a price. This may be true but the lender needs a way to assess this value of the property being purchased. Appraisers, in Georgia, are regulated by the Georgia Real Estate Appraisers Board. Generally, the Georgia Real Estate Appraisers Board’s Appraisal Act requires appraisers to meet certain standards in order to conduct business and prohibits a wide variety of unfair trade practices. Appraisers must meet both education and experience requirements, complete an examination and undergo a criminal history report. Most lenders will select their appraiser from a pre-approved pool or que of appraisers. You may want to ask your lender about their appraiser-selecting process when you apply for a loan. Local appraisers seem to have a better grasp for current conditions of the local real estate market. As part of the appraisal process, the appraiser will take a trip to see the home in person. The appraiser will look at factors like condition, upgrades, amenities, number of bedrooms/bathrooms, room size, ceiling height, lot size, etc. They may even measure the house to make sure the sq ft from the MLS and county tax assessor is correct. The challenging part of the process for the appraiser is selecting appropriate and recent comparable sales near the property to create a value for the property. Appraisers will look for properties with similar factors as those mentioned above. The comparable sales need to be within a certain radius (usually a few miles) of the subject property, or the property being appraised. Appraisers can adjust and weigh the comparable sales to help create the value for the property being appraised. It is normal for an appraiser to use 3-5 recent sales to create a value for the subject property. Some properties are more difficult to appraise than others. For example, it may be hard to find a recent comparable sale for a 10,000 sq ft property on 100 acres. In that case, the appraiser will need to open up their criteria. The “nightmare scenario” for a real estate transaction is a low appraisal. These are the two words that can keep a real estate agent awake at night. For example, you may have a $200,000 sales price for the contract but a $190,000 appraisal value on the property. In this case, you can choose to challenge the appraisal by providing additional comparable sales (maybe the appraiser missed a sale), re-order the appraisal, change lenders to have a new appraisal completed or negotiate the difference in sales price and appraisal value. It is up to the buyer and seller to negotiate, hopefully with the help of their agent, the difference between the contract price and appraisal value. The Film Fix … Streaming Edition
with Jonathan W. Hickman
Capsule Reviews … New Rating System - A “Fix" is recommended with a rating between 6 and 10! a “No Fix” with ratings of 1 to 5 isn’t. http://dailyfilmfix.com/ Jonathan W. Hickman is an entertainment attorney, filmmaker, college professor, and novelist. More about Jonathan can be found by visiting http://filmproductionlaw.com/)
In Theaters: Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (April 15) l Fix Rating 6/10 – “ – The third installment in the “Fantastic Beasts” series is an improvement over the 2018 sequel, “The Crimes of Grindelwald.” Highlighted by Dan Fogler’s sensitive portrayal of muggle Jacob Kowalski, “The Secrets of Dumbledore” feels very much like the end of the line for this series that is a spin-off of the “Harry Potter” universe. Fans will get their fix as a middle-aged Dumbledore (Jude Law) fights the maniacal Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen stepping into the role previously occupied by Johnny Depp). While the political machinations surrounding the balance of power in the wizarding world tease an epic showdown, it’s hard to ignore the scaled-down aspects of the production (perhaps, a COVID necessity) that make the narrative more personal but also give it a less grand visual impact. The dense story requires some level of exposition that makes the film a bit talky at times. The “say it, don’t show it” approach flows into the improbable final act involving what amounts to melodramatic palace intrigue. Of course, given the significant acting talent involved, the characters, including series hero Newt Scamander (Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne), are entertaining so long as you do your homework before taking in this episode. Director David Yates returns to complete this trilogy. His presence in the franchise, having shepherded the concluding four “Harry Potter” films, does give this movie a steady and familiar visual look and narrative pace. Author J.K. Rowling cedes the final screenplay duties to writer Steve Kloves (the “Harry Potter” screenwriter who was Oscar-nominated for “Wonder Boys”). Kloves’ work here is welcomed, but it is hard to shake the clunky bureaucratic politics that resolve the power struggle at the film’s center.
Streaming Selects: Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood (April 1) – Writer/director Richard Linklater (see “Boyhood” and “A Scanner Darkly”) returns to animation with “Apollo 10 ½” A Space Age Childhood.” This whimsical coming-of-age story takes place in Houston, Texas, in the summer of 1969. The fantasy aspects concern a boy serving as a pilot for a lunar module that’s been built too small. The science-fiction elements provide Linklater, a consistently talented and sensitive storyteller, with a fun way to explore the time and place through the eyes of a child.
Moon Knight (Now Streaming) l NO Fix Rating 5/10 – Disney shared the first four episodes with critics who seem divided on this MCU series. Oscar Isaac plays two sides of a man with a dissociative identity disorder. One moment he’s a ruthless American mercenary, and the next, he’s a timid Brit who works in a museum gift shop. But, secretly, he’s an avatar for a powerful, exiled Egyptian god who gives him superhuman abilities. Ethan Hawke plays a former avatar who is now attempting to revive another being for possibly nefarious purposes. Four episodes into the show, it is nearly impossible to understand what the devil is going on. Action sequences are disjointed and confusing as they are constantly interrupted by the hero’s conveniently shifting disorder. And the jumps in location seem almost as incredible as the powers possessed by the title superhero. Beware a major
narrative leap in episode four that will either be embraced or rejected by viewers. “Moon Knight” is a strange show with shades of FX’s “Legion” (another Marvel property). While I did not respond to it, I suspect that it will have its supporters, as MCU fans will jump at the chance to watch something from Marvel and Disney that is genuinely different.
The Flight Attendant (Season 2) (April 21) – The first two episodes drop on April 21, the next two on April 28, and then one per week until May 26 for an eight-episode second season. The simply irresistible Kaley Cuoco slips back into her flight attendant uniform as the playful misfit, alcoholic Cassie Bowden. After surviving international intrigue in season one, Cassie is sober and has moved to LA, where she continues her work flying the “friendly” skies. It’s that work that will inevitably lead to murder and mayhem. And, as she says in the season two teaser, bad things are bound to happen if she takes just one drink. I’m looking forward to watching those bad things unfold in this series, season one of which proved to be a delicious guilty pleasure.
CODA (Now Streaming) – While the big Oscar night was marred by the slap heard around the world, Apple quietly became the first streamer to take home the Academy’s top prize. While the other nominated films, including Paul Thomas Anderson’s marvelous “Licorice Pizza,” were all worthy of consideration, “CODA” would be a perfect entry to the streaming service. The film won three Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay (for director/writer Sian Heder), and Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role (for Troy Kotsur). The story follows the Rossi family with one hearing member named Ruby (Emilia Jones), a child of deaf adults. The Rossi fishing business is threatened when Ruby considers leaving home to pursue singing in college. “CODA” is a unique moving account of a family in transition.
Outer Range (April 15) – Josh Brolin leads this mystery series set on the edge of the Wyoming wilderness. The trailer yields little insight into the enigmatic story, but it feels like something sinister is afoot as Brolin plays family patriarch Royal Abbott wrestling with inner demons. Lili Taylor plays Brolin’s wife Cecilia and Imogen Poots (see “Green Room”) is also in the cast. While the trailer’s ominous vibe veers into the horror genre, I suspect this one could be embraced by “Yellowstone” fans.
For folks who don’t want to subscribe to the endless number of streaming services that manifest themselves each and every month, there are services like Tubi that offer programming for free, so long as you watch the commercials. This traditional advertising-supported platform features some 40 thousand movies and television shows and even a growing amount of original programming.
A few of this month’s films include: Titanic 666 While production company The Asylum isn’t known for award-winning dramatic material, their mock-buster approach has gained a reputation for laughably entertaining projects that appear to be parodies of Hollywood platform releases. There was no trailer for this one available, but “Titanic 666” reportedly follows the launch of Titanic III on the 110th anniversary of the Titanic’s fateful journey. Naturally, bad things happen when the new ship reaches the site of the original wreck. Lord of the Streets Anthony “Treach” Criss (see “Equal Standard”) plays MMA trainer Jason Dyson, whose daughter is kidnapped by a gangster. Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson and Eric Roberts are in the cast. Corrective Measures Notable as one of Bruce Willis’ last films before he stepped away from acting for health-related concerns, “Corrective Measures” is a futuristic action movie set in a maximum-security prison inhabited by super-powered criminals. The story is based on a graphic novel by Grant Chastain. “The Flash” star Tom Cavanaugh and “The Walking Dead’s” Michael Rooker are in the cast.
Arthouse Corner: Everything Everywhere All at Once (April 8) l Fix Rating 8/10 Actress Michelle Yeoh delivers a career-best performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” possibly one of the most inscrutable cinematic experiences in recent memory. The film is a kaleidoscope of wild imagery built around the story of laundromat owner Evelyn (Yeoh), who’s behind on her income taxes. When Evelyn and her husband Waymond (Ke Huy Quan, Short Round from 1984’s “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”) visit an IRS building to discuss their delinquent obligations, they find themselves trapped in a crazy hostage crisis. Evelyn’s wheelchair-bound father, Gong Gong (veteran actor James Hong), appears amused by the frenzied events. Is the old man hiding something?
Meanwhile, Evelyn’s daughter Joy (Stephanie Hsu) is at odds with her mother’s disapproval of her relationship with her girlfriend Becky (Tallie Medel). As things spiral, Evelyn discovers that she might be part of some kind of metaverse that permits her to acquire the extraordinary talents of beings from other planes of existence. This ability means that when confronted with militant forces, she can channel the skills (physical and otherwise) required to meet the challenge. While the setup might sound ridiculous, writer/directors Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (the “Daniels” responsible for “Swiss Army Man”) navigate the tricky narrative taking the viewer in unusual and completely unpredictable directions. And the story is imbued with a rich, authentic, engaging sentimentality that’s impossible to resist. “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is a cinematic treat worthy of repeat viewing (on the big screen) to unravel the many layers of visual and emotional significance.
