Notes from Jackson Street

The birth of Jesus Luke 2:1-20 NLT

2 At that time the Roman emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire. 2 (This was the first census taken when Quirinius was governor of Syria.)

3 All returned to their own ancestral towns to register for this census. 4 And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David’s ancient home. He traveled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee. 5 He took with him Mary, to whom he was engaged, who was now expecting a child.

6 And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. 7 She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them.

The Shepherds and Angels

8 That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep.

9 Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, 10 but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. 11 The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! 12 And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God and saying,

14

“Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.”

15 When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Let’s go to Bethlehem! Let’s see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

16 They hurried to the village and found Mary and Joseph. And there was the baby, lying in the manger. 17 After seeing him, the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child. 18 All who heard the shepherds’ story were astonished, 19 but Mary kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often. 20 The shepherds went back to their flocks, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen. It was just as the angel had told them.

Mr. Personality Newnan’s Goodwill Ambassador

December, the month for Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, the first day of winter and of course Christmas Day.

To have a greater understanding of Pearl Harbor during WWII and the hell our brave military heroes had to face, read the book titled “Killing the Rising Sun,” by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard.

Let us embrace the first day of winter without fearful expectations and be open-minded to what this winter may bring, such as a renewed bountiful spring in all its glory, bursting forth in bright colors, blooms overflowing with bees and butterflies.

Christmas Day is of course intended to worship Christ Jesus, a season of love and joy to be shared with family and friends.

Remember, Christ Jesus is to come before thoughts of gifts as Christ Jesus is the one true gift.

We have a new amazing store on 13 West Washington Street where The Hug Box used to be. Words fail me to express this store overflowing with such amazing shining and sparkling treasures everywhere you turn. It is called “Junk Starlet,” the owner is Jessica and is a sparkling treasure in and of herself. Tell her Mr Personality sent you.

Slowing down since COVID 19, the Courthouse Square is making a comeback slowly and surely. Many new places are about to open soon and by spring the Courthouse Square may well be in full swing.

One of my favorite hangouts is Gillyweeds, they are always stocked full of surprises as well as many state of the art gifts. Go see for yourself.

John Winters has been busy adding new and interesting features to both The Weekly and The Paper. Both publications have information you can’t get anywhere else for the Courthouse Square, Newnan and Coweta County.

I happened to find my Book of the Month for December and in an interesting way. On November 9, Divine Spirit through the VA’s office, blessed me with an appointment at the Thomas Eye Group to have

my cataracts removed at some point in time, restoring my vision to a greater degree.

I not only experienced a kind and friendly staff, every aspect of my visit was truly amazing to include meeting Dr. Patel, who explained the corrections to my eyes in detail. I am looking forward to my return visits soon.

While I was in the waiting room, a gentleman walked in with a book titled “How (Not) To Read The Bible.” This gentleman, who said he was a member of Dogwood Church, simply gave me the book. It is written by Dan Kimball and focuses on how to make sense of scripture that is causing much concern among its members.

I could not put this book down. This is of course another book you need to experience for yourself. I do indeed recommend this well written book.

Peace, love and much respect, Mr. Personality. ■

The Featured Joint

Everyone has their “go-to” place to eat. It might be with linen tablecloths and waiters in ties, or where you throw peanuts on the floor and carve your initials in the wooden tables. Whatever and wherever, it’s your “joint.” This month’s featured joint is …

Hemrick’s Deli & Cafe

You know those gigantor food courts you find in big indoor malls? The ones with everything from Chinese to pitas, ice cream and fresh lemonade, cheesesteaks, pizza, hamburgers, chicken tenders … you get our drift.

Well, if you’re out on the west side of Newnan, there’s a new mini food court popping up. And it will have a small, but nice variety of food choices when it’s completed.

For as long as anyone can remember there was Hemrick’s Grocery and in its own section, Hemrick’s Deli and Cafe

The Deli and Cafe section is getting the upgrade. Don’t panic, Charley’s Chicken and all the sides are still there. And they are keeping the breakfast menu too.

The JOINTS

Everyone has their “go-to” place to eat. It might be with linen tablecloths and waiters in ties, or where you throw peanuts on the floor and carve your initials in the wooden tables. Whatever and wherever, it’s your “joint.”

There are lots of these places around here, and we’re out to find them all in The Joints column. And yes, all are White Monkey approved.

Two locations serving up some of the best dishes around. People rave about their salsa and rice. We are also partial to the Tacos Carne Asada and the El Cabo.

Coweta Country Junction … 770.253.5999 1502 Hwy. 29 North, Newnan

Arguably the best wings in the county. Big and juicy. One flavor - awesome. Need to call ahead to order.

Dunc’s BBQ Kitchen … 678.673.6644 98 Jackson Street, Newnan Great joint that includes beef brisket, all-you-can-eat catfish and shrimp, smoked chicken and pulled pork. Killer banana pudding and their white sauce is The Bomb.

El Taquito … 770.252.2777 • 1389 Hwy. 29 South, Newnan It’s located inside a gas station. Their Coke is from Mexico and has

But more additions are coming. Not too long ago they added a Blimpie - America’s Sub Shop. Soon to join will be Maui Wowi Hawaiian Coffees and Smoothies; Baja Fresh, Mexican Food; and an Uncle Maddio’s Pizza

They are also adding The UPS Store, but that’s not really a joint.

This will probably become the goto place when everyone wants something different to eat.

Hemrick’s Grocery, Deli and Cafe. 10 Franklin Road, Newnan • 770.253.6667 • Open 24 hours

sugar. This is the real deal. They have photos up above the counter and you can just point and salivate at the same time.

Fabiano’s Pizzeria … 770.683.2683 19 North Court Square, Newnan Very popular pizza joint. It’s their other items that really make a hitsoups, sandwiches, garlic knots and bowls of tater tots.

Garlic Thai … 770.683.7515 • 16 North Court Square, Newnan garlicthai.com For those who love Asian food, as in Thai cuisine, sushi and noodles, Garlic has to be on the top of anyone’s list. Seafood, lamb, beef, chicken, all the proteins are there in some amazing sauces including several curry spices.

Goldens on the Square 770.251.4300 9 East Court Square, Newnan, GA 30263

The menu changes daily but there are always several meat/fish offerings, vegetables, salads and desserts.

If you are looking for some good ol’ Southern comfort food, you would be hard pressed to beat Golden’s.

H.J. Wings & Things 770.755.6192, 485 Hwy 16 W, Newnan Great wings, excellent hamburgers and top of the line cheesesteaks - and you know how serious we are about our cheesesteaks. But other “things” to consider are their shrimp, fish, massive salads, sandwiches, wraps, and … okay, wings again.

The Half Shell … 770.502.9911 • 1690 Hwy. 34 East, Newnan Hot dogs and oysters. Hey, it’s an Alabama thing. Onion rings, fried mushrooms are a secret hit. And don’t forget the crawfish.

HomeStyle Kitchen & BBQ … 404-228-2887 400 Carlton Rd., Unit A, Palmetto Soul Food and Barbecue. Grab and Go, Ready-to-Eat Meals.

Japaneck Frank Hibachi Cuisine Food Truck … Facebook: Japaneck Frank for times and locations. 678.633.0528 or 678.756.1906

This joint is all about something different. Different foods, diffe rent cooking styles, different locations … different. Think flat tops, shrimp, steak, salmon, grilled veggies, ginger sauce, the perfect fried rice and trailers and personal chefs and ...

JR’s BBQ 404.391.3846 • 191 Pine Road, Newnan He’s located on the side of the road in a little trailer. The smoker is outside. Just go ahead and stop for a BBQ sandwich and you will be hooked.

Lisa Créperies … 48 Main Street downtown Senoia Cafe: 770.727.9566 www.lisascreperie.com

Lisa’s Créperie has some amazing dessert crépes. But you’d be missing out if you didn’t try their breakfast and lunch “sandwich crépes.” Let’s just say their simple ham and cheese creépe would put your mama’s to shame and make her cry. And the “Lisa’s

Crépe,” which is basically a ham crépe on steroids, is awesome. Heck, everything is. Come support this veteran-owned joint right in the middle of downtown Senoia.

The Mad Mexican … 770.683.9545 • 2 East Court Square Southern BBQ meets Mexican tacos.

A unique take on Mexican dishes - burritos, quesadillas, nachos - with that Southern flair. Now serving margaritas … and awesomeness.

Matt’s Small Town Pizza … 770.599.1226 53E Main St, Senoia.

There is nothing “smalltown” about their pizza, or wings or anything else. Very casual atmosphere with beer, wine and even gluten free pizza if you prefer.

Mimmo’s Gourmet Pizza … 770.486.8000 1014 Senoia Rd, Tyrone

The pizza is dead-on with every topping you would want. Their cheesesteak is top-notch. And they have “build your own” pasta specialties where you choose the pasta, the sauce and the protein. Strombolis, Calzones and Chicken Parmesan and wings also on menu.

Modern Thai 678-834-5403 • modernthaiga.com 54 Carriage Oaks Drive, Tyrone.

A few offerings … Panang Beef … sliced beef tenderloin sautéed in panang curry topped with minced kaffir lime leaf and bell pep per served with jasmine blue rice. Or Spaghetti Keo Mao: stir fried spaghetti, shrimp, scallop, calamari, sweet onion, bell peppers, green beans with fresh chili, garlic & Holy basil. And Deep fried calamari rings with tentacles in salt and pepper batter served with pineapple chili sauce.

The Red Door Cafe 770-599-6838 • 86 Georgia Hwy. 85, Haralson, GA If you are ever in Haralson, Georgia, make sure and stop at Williams Grocery for some of the best sausage in the count ry. And you can try it right next door at the Red Door Cafe. You can have breakfast or lunch. On weekdays, they usually have two meat specials with plenty of vegetables. Or order off the blackboards.

The Redneck Gourmet 770.251.0092

11 N. Court Square, Newnan . Where you go to see a lot of people you know. It’s unpretentious with a little quirkiness - think Redneck Caviar. Ham burgers, hotdogs, sandwiches and salads. Everyone eats here.

RPM Full Service … 770.683.1414 15 Jackson Street, Newnan

Great pub food. Those into Reubens give it high marks. They have this Cod of Thunder that we aren’t sure anyone has ever finished. A very dog friend porch that always gets high marks.

Señor Taco … 678.723.7255, senortaco.com 75 Main St., Senoia

If you happen to be out and about in Senoia, you have to try out Senor Taco. It is so good they’ve had to move across the street to a bigger place. Any place that serves you two different salsas with chips.

She Craft Company … 678.884.6323

929 Senoia Road, Tyrone

The chef calls it “Asian Confusion.” We call it fun and unique. A Korean/Chinese/Southern place - grilled brussel sprouts, meat Bulgogi sliders.

Sprayberry’s Barbeque … 770.253.4421 229 Jackson Street, Newnan

Everyone, everyone has eaten at Sprayberry’s. And that includes vice presidents, senators and a slew of others. One of the oldest businesses in Coweta County, for many, it is their go-to spot.

Taco Criss Mexican Restaurant & Bakery … 2 locations … 21 Bullsboro Drive, Newnan 678.552.9438

3500 Hwy 34 E, Sharpsburg 770.683.5052

Upscale authentic dishes that will have your mouth watering. At first glance, one would think it is just a bakery. But they offer tor tas, which is pretty much a taco supreme in a killer hamburger-like bread. Their tacos, served with onions, cilantro and lime, come in a lot of flavors: steak, beef tongue, chicken, chorizo, seasoned pork, fried pork and more; and there’s fajitas, sincronizadas and several house specialties.

Coweta Association of Retired Educators BAKED GOODS,

Eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of New York’s Sun, and the quick response was printed as an unsigned editorial Sept. 21, 1897.

DEAR EDITOR: I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.

Papa says, ‘If you see it in THE SUN it’s so.’

Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?

VIRGINIA O’HANLON. 115 WEST NINETYFIFTH STREET.

VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary

would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You may tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart.

Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

The Film Fix … Streaming Edition

The Fabelmans (now playing) – l Fix Rating 9/10 –Steven Spielberg directs and co-writes with Tony Kushner this very personal coming-of-age tale about the struggles of the title family in post-World War II America. This movie is impeccably shot and acted, telling its relatable story through the eyes of the young Sammy (Gabriel LaBelle), who, like Spielberg, found his calling in filmmaking.

Paul Dano (The Riddler in “The Batman”) and multiple Oscar nominee Michelle Williams play Sammy’s mother, Mitzi, and father, Burt. While Williams is likely to garner awards notice for her work, Judd Hirsch delivers a scene-stealing performance as a visiting uncle who roughly imparts some sage wisdom onto the youthful Sammy. Comedic actor Seth Rogen takes a serious turn playing Bennie, a family friend.

Growing up is filled with so many critical moments, and in “The Fabelmans,” Spielberg focuses on a few particularly impactful epiphanies. Since this film is loosely based on his own life, Spielberg knows the right emotional buttons to push. This outstanding drama is a must-see for cineastes and film buffs.

Streaming Selects:

A Hollywood Christmas (December 1) – The tried-and-true cheesy Christmas movie formula gets a meta spin when a filmmaker named Jessica (Jessika Van), who makes holiday-themed movies, finds herself living in one. Van and Josh Swickard star alongside acting veteran Miss Pyle (see “Galaxy Quest” and “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story”) in this addition to the Christmas romance canon.

The Santa Clauses (episodes 5 & 6 premiere on December 7 and 14) – Tim Allen reprises the role of Santa that he originated in 1994’s “The Santa Clause.” This new limited series has Santa, aka Scott Calvin (Allen), considering retirement. He sets out to find a worthy successor to wear the red suit and grow the long, white beard.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (now playing) –The once fired “Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn slips back into the MCU with this special presentation. In this production, the beloved gang of intergalactic misfits continues their goofy adventures, this time with a bit of holiday cheer. In the special’s trailer, the Guardians travel to Earth to raise Star-Lord’s spirits. This journey brings them in front of one of Star-Lord’s childhood idols Kevin Bacon, who appears in the special as himself. This one has the potential to be a campy laugh riot.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (In limited theatrical release, streaming December 23) – l Fix Rating 8/10 –Rian Johnson’s follow-up to his 2019 mystery hit “Knives Out” is thrilling and immensely entertaining. James Bond alum Daniel Craig once again stars as super-detective Benoit Blanc.

The story has Blanc pulled into a murder mystery party on the private island of a flamboyant billionaire (played by Edward Norton). Of course, what starts as a Clue-inspired fake murder mystery weekend, becomes horribly real when one of the partiers is poisoned.

The terrific ensemble cast includes Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Janelle Monáe, Leslie Odom, Jr., and Kathryn Hahn. “Glass Onion” is the fun second installment in the promised continuing Benoit Blanc franchise.

pilot. While his talent in the cockpit is unquestioned, he is often held back because of the prejudices of the time. Brown is African American and a pilot, which was, at that time, rare.

As the sole person of color in his squadron, Brown hesitates to trust his fellow airmen. But when Tom Hudner (Glenn Powell) arrives, Brown’s isolationist behavior begins to thaw.

With “Devotion,” Director J.D. Dillard (see 2016’s “Sleight”) delivers a handsome and emotionally satisfying war picture that manages to address racial injustice while also celebrating the American soldier. Majors is terrific as Brown, who fights his inner demons by never forgetting the outer ones.

In one revealing sequence that becomes the film’s haunting echo, Brown stares into a mirror and repeats a lifetime of insults he’s received. The mantra is a tragic and moving narrative device that helps us understand Brown’s motivations intimately.

Emancipation (December 9, Apple TV+) – Before Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars presentation, “Emancipation” was likely to be in the running for end-of-the-year honors. But in the fallout from that tumultuous event, Apple scaled back on its plans to push the film during awards season.

The fate of this film will depend on whether audiences can ignore the controversy. However, it will be hard to put those memories aside because every critic, including this one, is compelled to mention the “slap heard around the world” when writing about any project featuring the actor.

But beyond Smith, “Emancipation” has an excellent director in Antoine Fuqua and a terrific co-star in Ben Foster. The story involves a runaway slave hunted by plantation owners through the swamps of Louisiana.

House Hunters and a Hallmark Christmas movie. The only two places where a reindeer groomer is independently wealthy. — Simon Holland

: Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan (December 21) – John Krasinski returns as the title hero in the third season of this adaptation of the popular book series. Amazon found a foothold with this type of material, as also typified by the success of their “Reacher” series. “Jack Ryan” and “Reacher” remain the gold standards, with other attempts by the streamer like “The Terminal List” and “Without Remorse” failing to connect.

Top Gun: Maverick (December 21) – l Fix Rating 9/10 –Just in time for Christmas viewing, Paramount+ releases the year’s biggest theatrical box office hit onto its streaming platform. What can I say? The movie is terrific and arguably better than the 1986 film that came before it. Paramount+ is arguably a lesser streamer, but with its affordable cost and well-known collection of titles, it’s worth trying out, especially as other platforms raise their prices.

Theatrical Teasers:

Violent Night (December 2) – “Stranger Things” star David Harbour leads this R-rated Christmas actioner that has Kris Kringle in “Die Hard” mode. The story features a beefed-up Santa facing off against a group of armed mercenaries threatening a wealthy family. The concept of a tough Claus taking on bad guys isn’t entirely new. In 2020, Mel Gibson embodied the jolly hero in the entertaining, highly recommended movie “Fatman.”

Avatar: The Way of Water (December 16) – With “The Way of Water,” visionary director James Cameron finally gives us the longawaited sequel to 2009’s box office monster “Avatar.” The original cast returns with other additions and, hopefully, something new and exciting to enhance the visual experience.

“Avatar” was never about the narrative and characters. The key to the film’s power was the expert use of 3D technology that made it a transcendent theatrical event. Theater owners, hit hard by the COVID pandemic, are counting on Cameron to reinvigorate audiences. Are you ready to step back into the colorful world of Pandora? Something tells me this holiday season will bring long lines and packed theaters prepared to don the glasses and take the “Avatar” ride. ■

Devotion (now playing) – l Fix Rating 7/10 – The Korean War that ran from 1950 through 1953 is often called the forgotten war. And “Devotion” focuses on a neglected heroic story during the early days of that conflict. Navy fighter with Jonathan W. The Holiday Season at The Carnegie

The holiday season is a special time of year. My family and I celebrate Christmas and we have lots of fun traditions. I have four sisters so the holidays have always been a fun and busy time for us. We have a Christmas cookie baking day every year which is one of my favorite events of the year. Instead of doing stockings we do Christmas baskets. You can fit a lot more stocking stuffers in baskets! One year we did a hygge Christmas where we wore PJs and ate soup. It was amazing!

I think the holiday season in downtown Newnan is spectacular and represents many years of Christmas traditions in our community. The lights and the decorations make it so festive. As soon as that big Christmas wreath goes up in the front window of the Carnegie Library we know the holiday season has officially begun. There are so many fun events downtown and all around Coweta County. The Carnegie Library will be getting into the spirit this year by hosting several of these special events.

First up, we will be hosting Santa Claus on Friday, December 2nd for the Stories from the North Pole Variety Show. Magician Dewayne Reynolds puts on an excellent show and then he will be taking photos with the kids. We will be holding our sixth annual Polar Express Pajama Party on Friday, December 9th. We decorate cookies, drink hot chocolate and then watch the movie. This is always such a fun event. For the adults in our community, we have a Holiday Ornament craft on Thursday, December 15th. And before the busyness of the holiday season overwhelms you, take an hour on Friday, December 16th for Sound Healing, where we work through some guided breath-work practices to help center and focus the mind, followed by an immersion of sound allowing you to drift into a meditative state.

All these programs do require advanced registration so please visit our website at www.newnancarnegie. com to find the registration links and more information on each program.

And I would be remiss if I didn’t suggest a few books to read this month: In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren, The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry, The Matzah Ball by Jean Meltzer, A Chirstmas Carol by Charles Dickens, The Deal of a Lifetime by Fredrik Backman, Little Women by Luisa May Alcott, and One Day in December by Josie Silver.

I want to wish everyone a very happy and safe holiday season and here’s to an amazing 2023! Can’t wait to see you all at the Carnegie!

Did You Know?

• 61% of low-income families do not have a single piece of age-appropriate reading material in their home?

• 1/3rd of Georgia’s children start school unprepared to learn?

• 75% of Georgia’s students who are poor readers in the third grade will remain poor readers in high school?

How Do Books Help?

The more words a child hears, the larger the child’s vocabulary and the larger the child’s vocabulary, the more likely the child will be a proficient reader. However, in order to read with a child, books must be in the home.

Coweta schools adopt both 2023-24, 2024-25 calendars

From Coweta County Schools Press Release

Following public input, the Coweta County Board of Education approved new academic-year calendars for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school years at its November 8th meeting.

Two calendar options for each school year are to the right or at https://www.cowetaschools.net/

The school board adopted the Option 1 calendar that was proposed to the public in September. That calendar option was modified, based on survey input, to move a Monday teacher workday in October to staff pre-planning days in August, and continue holding that Monday as a student and employee Fall Break holiday.

The adopted calendars closely follow the calendar used by the school system in recent years and include:

• School starts Wednesday, August 2, in 2023

• An October Fall Break weekend October 6-9

• A full week Thanksgiving Break November 20-24

• A two-week Christmas December 18-29

• A New Year’s Break Jan. 1 and 2

• A one-week Winter Break February 19-23

• Spring Break April 1-5.

The calendars maintain 180 days of student instruction, divided into two 90-day semesters (or 89/91 days or 88/92 days). The first semester concludes before the start of holidays in December to allow for high school course completion and final exams prior to the Christmas and New Year’s break.

The calendars were adopted by the board following two months of public input through an online survey.

Just over 72 percent of respondents preferred the proposed Option 1 calendar, out of 1,560 people who took the survey. The Option 2 calendar shortened the Christmas and New Year’s break and started the school year slightly later in August.

The survey also asked participants to rate how important it is to maintain the traditional Coweta school-year holidays in the upcoming school-year calendars.

77 percent of respondents said that the two-day fall break (four-day weekend, three-day employee weekend) was important to them. 82 percent said the full-week Thanksgiving Break was important to maintain, 81 percent said the full two-week Christmas and New Year’s Break was important to maintain, and 70 percent of respondents said the full-week February (Winter) break was important to maintain in school calendars going forward.

The results of the survey and respondents’ comments and suggestions were provided to the school board to inform their decision.
