Santa came to town
with Elf on the Shelf or in a MUG
and we’ve got photos
Briefly describe yourself and what you do/did.
Some photos from Main Street Newnan’s Santa on the Square November 26.
I am part of the senior management team with Santa’s Elves Inc. I head the Investigative Branch, overseeing thousands of elves checking out which children have been naughty or nice. Best piece of business advice you’ve received. There are a couple of things, but that all relate: always tell the truth, obey your parents and keep your word. Follow those and you will always do well in life. If I had it to do over … I would have fought harder for us to have green outfits instead of red. Green is much better camouflage with Christmas trees. You are going on an extended solo trip. What three albums and three books would you take? White Christmas, Carrie Underwood Christmas Album, Willie Nelson – The Classic Christmas album. Twas the Night Before Christmas, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Polar Express. Tell us one thing about yourself that few people know I am actually taller than people think. You are hosting a dinner party for six. What five people, living or dead, would you invite and why? Santa and Mrs. Claus (obvious reasons, they are like my parents), Donner (he’s actually my best reindeer friend), Hermey, he’s the elf who wanted to be a dentist and we got really close saving each other’s lives while chasing the Abominable Snowman, the Abominable Snowman (after Hermey fixed his tooth, we realized he was really nice in real life. Plus he has a funny accent and you should see the way he eats!) Name an as yet unfulfilled dream. I would like to deliver presents with Santa one Christmas. If you weren’t doing what you are, you would be … I love the reindeer, so probably a reindeer herder. Or, a Peppermint candy farmer. Your go-to food. Santa always brings back cookies – I mean even he can’t eat all the cookies good boys and girls leave out on Christmas Eve. Favorite movies(s). A Christmas Story (triple dog dare you.) Elf (Will Ferrell and I are tight. I served as a consultant on that one.) Miracle on 34th Street. Dogs or cats? Oh please. Reindeer obviously.
Look for more photos on page 30.

Mr. Personality Newnan’s Goodwill Ambassador
December: The highlights for this month are national Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, the first day of Winter, and Christmas Day. I am sad to see the abuse of Christmas, which is to celebrate the birth of Christ Jesus, to become just another day to party and to shop til you drop.
There are many new changes being made on the Courthouse square. Bold Soul and The Three Sisters Boutique are leaving, and new places are popping up here and there. A salad and soup cafe is coming soon. I hope to share more information about these changes in my January column. I suggest to everyone to stop by Gillyweeds and check out the amazing changes that owner Valerie Dumas has just completed, giving the store a fresh, bright, and brand new look. It is simply loaded down with good buys. My new essay that I am introducing this month truly goes handin-hand with my Book of the Month, which is titled “The Positive
Effects of Death.” I agree with the stoic philosophers that to better appreciate life to the fullest is to ponder our coming death. Since I started this strange method of embracing my expiration date, I am excited to discover that I am not dead yet. Being aware that I can drop at any given time motivates me to make good use of every moment every day. I can apply my six senses to the endeavor, as I can see my life and death more clearly in contrast with both sides of the issue. I can hear the sounds of true life and my coming death. I truly can smell both to the point I can touch and feel them hovering nearby. The sweet taste of life is truly invigorating compared to the acidic aftertaste of death. My five senses are indeed placed in proper perspective through my sixth sense in a spiritual understanding of my life and death experience. Next month, I shall add the list of the many benefits of embracing one’s expiration date The Book of the Month is titled “Light on Aging and Dying, Wise Words by Helen Nearing.” The author wrote the book at the age of 91, after her husband died at the age of 100. She quotes Socrates, Viktor E. Frankl, Martha Washington, Erich Fromm, and many more such as Emily Dickerson, Flora Hastings, Rainer Maria Rilke, and even Richard Burton. The book seems to be saying “O death, where is thy sting?” It is about the positive side of life in spite of death. Both are a part of the miracle from Divine Spirit. Until next time, Peace, Love, and Joy ~ Mr.Personality

Notes from Jackson Street The birth of Jesus Luke 2:1-20 NLT 1 At that time the Roman emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout
the Roman Empire. 2 (This was the first census taken when Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 All returned to their own ancestral towns to register for this census. 4 And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David’s ancient home. He traveled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee. 5 He took with him Mary, to whom he was engaged, who was now expecting a child. 6 And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. 7 She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them.
The Shepherds and Angels 8 That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. 9 Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, 10 but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. 11 The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! 12 And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.” 13 Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God and saying, 14
“Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.” 15 When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Let’s go to Bethlehem! Let’s see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
16 They hurried to the village and found Mary and Joseph. And there was the baby, lying in the manger. 17 After seeing him, the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child. 18 All who heard the shepherds’ story were astonished, 19 but Mary kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often. 20 The shepherds went back to their flocks, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen. It was just as the angel had told them.

Elf on the Shelf Interview continued from front page Your favorite quote and why. “Whenever you give someone a present or sing a holiday song, you’re helping Santa Claus. To me, that’s what Christmas is all about. Helping Santa Claus!” LOUIS SACHAR, Wayside School Gets a Little Stranger. Name something that you are extremely glad you did or accomplished. I learned that one of the most important things in life is to give others another chance. Over the years I have watched children do naughty things, things that would prevent Santa from coming. But we all make mistakes, and I continue to watch these kids and realize they are great. They just had a bad day. By giving a second or third or fourth chance, I learn who they really are. So by doing that, they got great presents from Santa.

The
reasons is our close proximity to the busiest airport in the world and the city of Atlanta. Another reason is that the fact that Interstate 85 runs through the middle of our county.
Thanksgiving in Real Estate
Coweta has attracted many types of industry and businesses through the years but big names like Amazon and Goodyear are here now. The Coweta County Development Authority does a nice job of bringing in prospective businesses to our area. Personally, I am seeing more and more employees from large companies like Chickfil-A , Coca-Cola and Delta purchase homes in Coweta as opposed to the northside of Atlanta.

Having a good school system really helps as this is a very important factor for families with children when selecting where to live. We are lucky to have a good school system with nice private schools also available.
With this rapid growth, good leadership and “smart growth” is essential. We are fortunate to have good leaders in place to protect our hometowns and grow with vision. You see many practices in planning, involving density and best uses for properties, by our local leadership. Coweta County is in a prime position to flourish in the next decades. Some of this is simply due to our location while much of it is due to planning, developing, and good leadership. Simply put, Coweta County is just a nice place to live. That is something we can all be thankful for over the holiday season. Jess Barron is an Associate Broker with Lindseys, Inc. Realtors and former President of the Newnan-Coweta Board of Realtors. ■
Jess Barron
Simply put, Coweta County is just a nice place to live. That is something we can all be thankful for over the holiday season. Most of the people that live here in Coweta seem happy to be here and do not want to leave. Looking at the number of homes listed for sale, they are very scarce, and we have less than a two-month supply of homes available to purchase. Many sellers are staying in the county and moving locally. The number of buyers and the demand for housing outpaces the number of properties for sale. I have seen more buyers from outside of Georgia this year than any year I can remember. The individual cities and the county have done a good job providing attractive amenities. One example is the Newnan LINC or walking trail system. It is like our own version of Atlanta’s Beltline.

Piedmont
NEWNAN
anything—so, Piedmont adapted.
Diabetes educators and even physicians turned to Piedmont’s virtual platforms which allowed for more connection than the alternative, with the added benefit of eliminating the hassles of long-distance travel. And with the potential of long commutes for the classes taken out of the picture, those participating in Piedmont’s Diabetes Education Program flourished. Not to mention the centralized workflow allowing patients access to more scheduling options than their local classroom has provided. And it was even easier for patients to maintain continuity when taking into account the fact that the online meeting platforms allowed for more opportunities to connect with not only those teaching the curriculum, but also their caregivers, streamlining their access to each part of the process. About 5,000 patients have received a three-session diabetes education program provided by Epic. About 80% of those who complete the classes see a substantial drop in their A1C. More than 15% drop a full percentage point, Dr. Jim Latimer, Piedmont’s chief medical informatics officer for ambulatory services, recently told USA Today about the program. “I’m thrilled that the program we’ve developed has been shown to be able to have an effect,” he said “We want to expand it further so that we can help more.”
Piedmont’s Virtual Diabetes Classes Improve Patients’ Blood Sugar Levels Taking a new virtual approach to educate diabetic patients, Piedmont is seeing significant progress in patient comprehension and health outcomes — with participants achieving healthier blood sugar levels. In fact, 80 percent of those who complete the classes see a substantial drop in their A1C. The average drop is two full percentage points. By utilizing and expanding its virtual platforms, Piedmont has reached people in a long-term, day-to-day sense, without needing to be in the same room.
Tips on avoiding the ER during the holiday season
The holiday season often is the busiest time for hospital emergency rooms. Last year at Piedmont Newnan Hospital, more than 10,500 patients sought treatment at the ER during the holiday season. Here’s how to avoid the emergency room this holiday season: 1. Know when a trip to the ER is really necessary. Most health issues that arise during the holidays are not medical emergencies. Health issues that should be treated immediately include chest pain, stroke symptoms (numbness on one side of the body, face, arm or leg; trouble walking, speaking and seeing in one or both eyes), excessive, uncontrolled bleeding and difficulty breathing. Severe stomach pain that is accompanied by other symptoms such as coughing up or vomiting blood, dizziness or fainting and vision changes should also be treated immediately in the ER.
About 37 million people have diabetes in the US. That’s over 11% of the US population. Patients struggle enough maintaining the modifications to their daily lives that become crucial when living with diabetes. These include testing blood glucose levels, taking long-term medications, and accounting for specific dietary restrictions. Hence, the reasoning behind the creation of curriculums educating patients on how to perform each task, the frequency for each, and the importance of all of it. Making these classes convenient for Piedmont’s patients is a major priority for the health system. The program, developed in conjunction with Piedmont’s electronic medical record vendor, Epic, is available to Piedmont patients who see physicians who are employed by Piedmont. Ironically, one of the biggest challenges the healthcare industry has ever faced, has also provided Piedmont with a key skillset. The pandemic was a worldwide nightmare, temporarily putting a halt to in-person

2.
Seek treatment at urgent care or walk-in clinics when appropriate. Anything from sprained ankles and fractures to sore throats and ear infections, cuts and falls can be treated at an urgent care or walk-in clinic, which is often open later than family doctors’ offices. Familiarize yourself with the local urgent care clinics in your area before an accident or health event occurs. Seeking treatment at one of these facilities for non-emergent medical issues can save families significant time and money.
3.
Be proactive about your health. Seeing a family doctor regularly can save families hundreds or even thousands of dollars in the long run and can prevent you or a loved one from ending up in the ER unnecessarily. Regular visits with a family doctor also increase chances of early detection should a medical issue present itself. Be sure to get cholesterol and blood pressure checked and share any family history of medical problems such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer with your doctor.
4.
Beware the common holiday mishaps. Look out for things in your home that could prove hazardous during the holidays such as open fireplaces, electrical issues, poisonous plants like mistletoe and holly berries or areas that put guests at risk for falls. In addition to fires and falls, car accidents due to weather and alcohol consumption are common reasons hospital emergency rooms see more patients during the holidays.
5.
Use Piedmont On Call for low-acuity, urgent healthcare needs. With a quick download of the Piedmont On Call application via smart phone or tablet, patients can be seen by a boardcertified physician from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day of the week for $49 per virtual visit. This should not replace regular visits with your primary care physician, but is a convenient way to diagnose common family illnesses and treat minor wounds without having to leave home or work.
We know the ER is the last place you want to visit, especially at the holidays, but should an emergency condition arise, our board-certified emergency room physicians here at Piedmont Newnan are highly qualified and ready to treat you. Use these tips to keep your family safe and healthy during the holiday season. For more information on emergency services at Piedmont Newnan, visit piedmont.org.

Thank you for your support throughout this year to Honor Our Angel Abby. ❦ Abby’s Bracelets ❦ Abby’s Closets ❦ Rainbow Run & Family Fun Day ❦ Kate’s Club katesclub.org ❦ TVOC, Teen Vehicle Operations Course We are so grateful for all the support that we receive.
An easy way to support Abby’s Angels is by making an online donation to www.abbysangelsfoundation.org.
The Bacho family was involved in a horrifying car wreck caused by a teen driver a few days before Christmas, 2012. Abby and her father were life-flighted to separate trauma hospitals in Atlanta. Abby’s father remained in a medically induced coma for four weeks; however, gradually recovered. Our Abby would never recover from her injuries. Abigail Gracen Bacho became an Angel on Christmas Day. Abby gave the most precious gift anyone can give. She gave the gift of life through organ donation. Abby’s Angels Foundation was created to forever honor our Angel, Abby. With the assistance of guidance counselors and teachers, we also provide school supplies to children in need through their local school system. We share awareness and education about safe and responsible teen driving and the dangers of distracted driving of any kind. Finally, we share awareness and education about giving the greatest gift of all through organ donation–life.
For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.~ Psalm 91:11

Get Lit(erary) with Coweta Ferst Readers Looking for an affordable holiday gift for a child in your life? How about a free gift? (And one that keeps on giving.) It may sound too good to be true, but if you know a child up to age 5, they can receive a free book in the mail every month. Coweta Ferst Readers (formally known as Coweta Ferst Foundation), a local nonprofit, provides this life-changing service for Coweta’s children. The only criteria is that the child must be between birth and five years, and live in Coweta County.
“The key is to start at birth. Immersing a child in abundant, rich language can be a stronger predictor of literacy and academic achievement than family income or a parent’s level of education.”
The program reaches back to 1999, when Robin Ferst brought Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to Georgia. In 2004, CLICK and Stepping Stones held an event for children in Coweta County, and signed up 400 children to receive free books; however, there was no set plan on how to pay for them. Luckily, several organizations and businesses stepped up, and Coweta Ferst Foundation was born.
(ferstreaders.org ferstreaders.org)
Board of Directors member Linda Brass said, “We like to joke with people when they hear the name Ferst that you would think a children’s literacy program could spell Ferst. We say we can, it is F-E-R-S-T because Robin Ferst brought the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to Georgia. Robin was partially deaf, so growing up, reading was her escape. “Each county in Georgia that is in The Ferst Foundation (recently rebranded as Ferst Readers) must raise their own funds and everything that we raise stays right here in Coweta County. We have no paid staff so everything goes for the benefit of providing age appropriate books to children.” Currently, the organization serves 24% of the eligible population in Coweta. Their goal is to serve 2,500 children each month, and to meet this goal, they are always fundraising, with their Coin Drives in the schools and the Lewis Grizzard and Catfish Memorial Bike Ride, both held in the fall. In the spring, they hold a fund drive for donors to support one child for one year, at $50 per year. Brass says the Board of Directors appreciates the support of their Community Action Team of volunteers, the Coweta County School System, their corporate sponsors, and every donor, no matter the size of the donation. “They are critical to the success of our program and we always welcome more. We also appreciate any donations … every bit adds up and matters. As an example, who would think that coins from the schools could add up like they do, but in that case every penny counts!”
Coweta Ferst Facts • There are more than 8,255 children under the age of five living in Coweta County. About half of those children are in low-income families and do not attend preschool. • 368,118 books have been mailed since 2006 to children in Coweta County • 7,993 children have graduated from the program upon turning 5 since 2006 Tips to promote language development: (via ferstreaders.org) Birth to One Year • Read/sing to children starting at birth. • Read to your baby every day. One to Three Years • Read favorite books over and over again. • Use different voices when reading to make it more fun. Four to Five Years: • Let your child pick the books, and let them pretend to write.

Yes Virginia, There Is A Santa Claus
Eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of New York’s Sun, and the quick response was printed as an unsigned editorial Sept. 21, 1897.
DEAR EDITOR: I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, ‘If you see it in THE SUN it’s so.’ Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?
Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished. Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.
VIRGINIA O’HANLON. 115 WEST NINETYFIFTH STREET. VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge. Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa
You may tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.
Did You Know? • 61% of low-income families do not have a single piece of ageappropriate reading material in their home?
• 1/3rd of Georgia’s children
start school unprepared to learn?
• 75% of Georgia’s students who are poor readers in the third grade will remain poor readers in high school?

The Film Fix … Streaming Edition
with Jonathan W. Hickman
Capsule Reviews … New Rating System - A “Fix" is recommended with a rating between 6 and 10! a “No Fix” with ratings of 1 to 5 isn’t. http://dailyfilmfix.com/ Jonathan W. Hickman is an entertainment attorney, filmmaker, college professor, and novelist. More about Jonathan can be found by visiting http://filmproductionlaw.com/
In Theaters:
Saltburn (in theaters now) – l Fix Rating 8/10 – The outrageous voice of writer/director Emerald Fennell (see “Promising Young Woman”) continues to magnify. And her second feature film, the devilish “Saltburn,” is another sardonic tale of the origin of a sociopath who exacts blistering revenge on an arrogant collection of psychopaths. And it’s bloody marvelous. In “Saltburn,” Oscar-nominee Barry Keoghan (see last year’s “The Banshees of Inisherin”) plays outsider college student Oliver Quick. When the school term ends, popular aristocrat and fellow student Felix (“Priscilla’s” Jacob Elordi) invites Oliver to spend the school break with him at his family’s sprawling estate known as Saltburn. It will be a summer they will never forget. The audience I saw “Saltburn” with audibly gasped more than once. It’s a shocking and nasty viewing experience that must be watched in the presence of others. As a theatrical provocation, “Saltburn” is just what the doctor ordered. American Fiction (December 16) – l Fix Rating 8/10 – In this film, the directing debut of “Watchmen” series writer Cord Jefferson, Jeffrey Wright is a lock for an Oscar nomination playing frustrated novelist Thelonious ‘Monk’ Ellison. The story follows Monk as he takes a forced “sabbatical” to care for his ailing mother. When his latest book doesn’t sell, he writes, under a pseudonym, an offensive and exploitative tome that he’s sure will be lampooned. When the book is a hit, Monk must cope with his secret success while balancing the emotional crises in his life. This comedic drama has pitch-perfect performances with terrific work by Sterling K. Brown (who crushed it in the highly recommended “Biosphere” earlier this year). All of Us Strangers (December 22) – l Fix Rating 7/10 – This odd fantasy romance contains excellent performances from hot actors Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott. The movie has Scott playing Adam, a screenwriter living a lonely existence in an almost abandoned high-rise apartment building. When he begins a romance with the only other resident named Harry (played by Mescal), Adam explores memories of his parents, who died tragically when he was twelve. The fantasy elements have Adam returning to his family home to discover his parents (played by Jamie Bell and Claire Foy) alive and well, as though they haven’t changed in over 30 years. As Adam spends time with his parents, he gets closer and closer to Harry. “All of Us Strangers” is a deliberate narrative that will frustrate some viewers who might consider it a languid horror movie and less a moving drama.
gela (Lidya Jewett) attempts to contact her deceased mother. The effort brings forth a demon that inhabits both children. An inevitable exorcism is mounted. I doubt anyone will get nightmares from this 2023 take on the now overly familiar exorcism story. At best, viewers will giggle as the girls defy and mock the people of faith who try to rid them of their demonic infestation. Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie (December 8) – Almost 14 years have passed since the last episode of the long-running “Monk” series. In this movie, Tony Shalhoub steps back into the obsessive-compulsive detective role of Adrian Monk for one last, personal case involving Monk’s beloved stepdaughter, Molly (Caitlin McGee), a journalist preparing for her wedding. The principal returning cast includes Ted Levine, Jason Gray-Stanford, Traylor Howard, Melora Hardin, and Hector Elizondo.
Maestro (December 10) – l Fix Rating 8/10 – Bradley Cooper’s directing follow-up to 2018’s “A Star is Born” is another moving and finely-tuned examination of a troubled musical genius. This time, he carefully trains his camera on the life of an actual conducting and composing legend, the late Leonard Bernstein. The film follows the relationship between Bernstein (played by Cooper) and his wife, Felicia Montealegre (played by Carey Mulligan). The movie charts his diverse ascent to lofty, tuneful heights. Even though he died in 1990, Bernstein’s musical legacy remains culturally relevant and significant. Cooper’s script, co-written with Oscar-winning screenwriter Josh Singer (see 2016’s “Spotlight”), smartly focuses on the musician’s unique relationship with Montealegre. These aspects may divide audiences in that Bernstein’s egotistical decisions involving infidelity leave his wife in emotional chaos. But aside from the uneven workings of the narrative and polarizing characterizations, Cooper’s production is grand, bravura filmmaking. Leave the World Behind (December 8) – Sam Esmail (creator of “Mr. Robot”) adapts the dramatic science fiction novel by Rumaan Alam for this Netflix film starring Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, and Ethan Hawke. The story follows a vacationing couple (Roberts and Hawke) who travel to an isolated, high-end rental home when an unknown catastrophic event occurs. Ali and his wife (played by Myha’la Herrold) play the owners of the house who bring news of the event and seek uncomfortable refuge. The novel is engaging but ambiguous, while the trailers for the movie tease something a little more concrete.
story has the demigod Percy on a quest across the United States to head off a growing war between the gods.
The Family Plan (December 15) – Mark Wahlberg stars as Dan Morgan, a retired elite assassin living incognito with his wife (Michelle Monaghan) and kids in suburbia. Of course, his past comes back to haunt him, and to escape other contract killers, Dan takes the family on a road trip. This action-comedy features supporting performances by Maggie Q and Ciarán Hinds.
Theatrical Teasers: Silent Night (December 1) – Famed action-directing legend John Woo (see “Face/Off” and “Hard Boiled”) returns with this movie about a grieving father (played by Joel Kinnaman) who has lost the ability to speak and seeks bloody revenge on Christmas Eve. Wonka (December 15) – The Roald Dahl character Willy Wonka gets an origin story with Timothée Chalamet in the lead and the “Paddington” director Paul King at the helm. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (December 22) – Jason Momoa is back as the amphibious DC Comics superhero that thrilled audiences back in 2018. James Wan (see the “Saw” and “The Conjuring” franchises) returns to the directing chair in this sequel that was allegedly plagued by reshoots and delays. The Color Purple (December 25) – The 1985 Steven Spielberg classic gets a musical reboot starring 2002 American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino. This film has generated significant Oscar buzz for Taraji P. Henson and Danielle Brooks. The Boys in the Boat (December 25) – George Clooney directs this story of the University of Washington’s rowing team’s efforts in the 1930s to compete and win at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Joel Edgerton stars as the team’s driven coach in the sports drama.
Streaming Selects: Baby Shark’s Big Movie (December 8) – The YouTube sensation, popular song, and series get a feature film. The movie follows Baby Shark (Kimiko Glenn) and his family as they venture out of Chomp City and beyond.
The Exorcist: Believer (December 1)– l NO Fix Rating 3/10 — Despite several efforts over the years to replicate the magic that made the Oscar-winning 1974 original “The Exorcist” so unique, no sequel or prequel has ever measured up. And now, what’s become a limping franchise reaches a new low. This recycled story has two teen girls wandering off into the woods after school. They perform a kind of séance whereby youngster An-
Reacher (season 2, December 15) – Alan Ritchson returns as the protagonist of the best-selling Lee Child book series. Season one, shot in Georgia, was a sleeper hit with its straight-ahead momentum over eight action-packed episodes. And unlike the Tom Cruise movies, Ritchson is much more suited for the beefy role of the former soldier who roams the country with only a toothbrush and the clothes on his back. This season has Reacher investigating the mysterious murders of his former military unit.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians (season 1, December 20) – The Rick Riordan novels get another adaptation with Walker Scobell (see last year’s “Secret Headquarters”) in the title role. The

Tales from the Car Show Prayer Booth
Not many preachers own a Corvette. To put my inherited 1961 red convertible to good use, I began hosting a car show prayer booth last year. I chat cars for a bit with folks and then I ask what we can pray for. When you talk to the show car owners, you discover a hidden truth. After complimenting a beautiful vehicle, they respond with a “Thanks, but…” and tell you about what needs to be fixed next. For example, underneath its shiny chrome, my Corvette needs its transmission repaired. All the effort to make these vehicles look good cannot mask the truth that there is work to be done underneath the surface. When I ask passersby at car shows “How can I pray for you today?” the usual response is “We’re fine” or “I’m okay.” The longer we chat, however, the more people reveal that underneath their polished exteriors, something is broken. At the 6th Annual Newnan Police Department Car/Truck/ Off-Road Show this past October, a lot of hidden brokenness surfaced. One young family came along, and a middle-schoolage boy pointed to his mother and said, “She needs prayer.” After he walked on with his siblings to another car, his mother shared that finances were rough, and they were about to lose their home. After we prayed together, she whispered a trembling “thank you” and walked away, dabbing her eyes. I’ll never know what happens next in her story. What I do know is that this child of God’s prayer is now before the throne of the One for whom all the problems overwhelming her are not a problem at all. And I know she knows it. How can I pray for you? As I talked with people, I would write down their prayer requests on a note card, pray, and then place the card in the prayer bucket. One family’s “We’re okay.” turned into them sharing about the loss of an adult son a few years back. We talked less about the shiny, orange dragster they had on display than we did their other car, the green one, their late son’s car, which is sitting at home in disrepair. Working on it is just too difficult. Lord, please be with them as they grieve. I prayed with folks about their cancer. I prayed with a girl whose father is in prison. I prayed with people grieving. Neighbor after neighbor shared their hidden woes. A no-nonsense police officer running the event was struggling to allow herself to be more friendly than usual. I can only guess what human ugliness she sees in her daily routine. I could tell that she desperately needed her love for her community to be recharged that Saturday. She was too busy to stop for prayer. I prayed for her anyway. Philippians 4:6 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God” (NIV). I have no idea about the regular prayer habits or faith of the people I pray with at car shows. I have a prayer bucket out there, not a baptismal font. My hope is that the conversation I lead people in turns into a regular thing and a healthy relationship between them and the One able to see behind our shiny, pretty exteriors and knows best how to fix the brokenness we all have underneath. Amen. The Rev. John Tomlin is the director of FaithWorks USA, Inc., a nonprofit ministry supporting Christians in their faith journey on the job. Visit faithworksusa.org.

Volunteers: The Heart of the Salvation Army’s Christmas Programs Volunteers urgently needed to support The Salvation Army’s Christmas initiatives While some may think it is still a little early to unpack the holiday decorations, The Salvation Army has been hard at work, planning Christmas programs for several months. Now, as the red kettles are appearing outside stores, and Angel Trees are being set up, volunteers are needed to help ensure men, women and children in need throughout our community experience the joys of Christmas. The Salvation Army of Newnan is seeking volunteers primarily for its Red Kettle campaign.

News and Musings … With the holiday season right around the corner and consumers struggling with inflation, the personal-finance website WalletHub released reports to help holiday shoppers save money and avoid a financial hangover in the new year. Skipping Presents: More than 1 in 3 Americans are foregoing gifts this year due to inflation. Lingering Holiday Debt: Nearly 1 in 4 Americans still have holiday debt from last year.

[ [ [ And also from WalletHub, the top three most obese states are West Virginia, Mississippi and Kentucky. Georgia comes in at number 16. Lowest is the District of Columbia, which comes in at 24.80 percent, 1.7 times higher than West Virginia, which is more than 40 percent.

Yamaha gets kindergarteners riding bikes at local schools
From Special Reports Kids in Coweta County are learning to ride bicycles, and the folks at Yamaha are helping make it happen. Three elementary schools in Coweta – White Oak, Moreland and Welch – are participating in learn-to-ride programs thanks to All Kids Bike, a national nonprofit that teaches kindergarten students how to ride bikes during physical education classes. The program was made possible locally by a $100,000 grant from Yamaha Motor Corp, USA via its Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative (OAI). But the company’s involvement does not end there. A number of employees at the Yamaha Motor Manufacturing facility in Newnan spent a day assembling bikes. Armando Torres, a continuous improvement technician, was enthusiastic about the bike build. “When we were approached to help with this specific project, I had no clue Yamaha was as invested in the community as they are. And it does make me proud to work for a company that actually cares about the community enough to give back." The bikes were delivered to White Oak at a special celebration Nov. 8. The ceremony revealed 24 balance-to-pedal conversion bikes and included a first-ride opportunity for some very excited kindergarteners. The American Academy of Pediatrics states that riding a bike is considered a developmental milestone for a child. The All Kids Bike program, now in more than 1,000 schools across the nation, helps students develop physically and mentally. It also gives them greater confidence, reduces stress, and provides better focus in the classroom. Jon Jones, the PE Teacher at White Oak agrees. “We’ve been on scooters already to teach them spatial awareness and direction. They’ll learn balance using these bikes. It’s a lifetime activity that they can use.”
With school leaders as well as parents working to get kids to reduce their screen time and become more active, Yamaha is a natural choice to partner on this project as the company’s entire product line encourages outdoor recreation.
Yamaha has funded a total of seven bike programs in Coweta County, all at Title I schools. Additionally, nonprofit partners in the community funded an additional three Title I schools in the program. Many of these children come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and might not be able to afford a bicycle to learn on at home.
Jason Broshear, Yamaha’s Division Manager for Corporate Planning and Sustainability explains. “I was just recently looking at all of the images of my son when he first got a balance bike and what came to mind is the joy it brought him being out in the neighborhood, riding around and meeting new friends. I mean, I remember, I’m sure everyone remembers their first time riding a bike, so just to have every kid experience that feeling is truly what All Kids Bike and Yamaha hope to provide to local communities.
“We are a Title I school. Some of our students are on free and reduced lunch. They come from all different neighborhoods in our community, and they all have different needs,” says Kim Taylor, the Principal at White Oak. “I feel like there’s a lot of opportunity with the bicycles to learn about healthy habits, to learn about exercise, to learn about reducing stress, to learn new skills. We have a lot of opportunities with these bikes to help our students.”
“We hope that through learning to ride a bike, this provides confidence and empowerment in enjoying the outdoors that stays with them throughout their lives. Yamaha looks forward to having these students as our future customers, our future team members, and our future community leaders.”

Yamaha Rolls Out Employee Equipment Loan Program
PROFESSIONALS NEEDED Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation of America is hiring new professional team members at our facility Enjoying a day on the lake with a loaned WaveRunner through Yamaha’s Employee Equipment Loan Program. Cecil Wood made his neighbors jealous without even trying. He spent a week riding all over his large neighborhood on a new Yamaha electric bike. Every afternoon, along a route of more than two miles on the streets near his home. How did he like it? “I just had an awesome time,” he said. Where did he buy the bike? He didn’t. The vehicle was a loaner. As an employee of Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Company, Wood was able to take advantage of a new program through which he could reserve the use of either a Yamaha e-bike or a WaveRunner produced at the Newnan plant after completing a safety course. Wood was initially skeptical about the supposed ease of participating, but he soon found out it was true. So he wound up on a bicycle for the first time in about 20 years. Why is Yamaha going to such efforts to put Yamaha products in the hands of their employees? It speaks to a Japanese concept that we don’t have an English word for, Kando. It’s the deep satisfaction and excitement you find in discovering something of value. “We are the Kando-creating company,” said Bob Brown, Vice President of Operations. “We want to provide it to our end customers, and we certainly want it for our employees. If they can have the kind of deep emotional experience and excitement in using our products, we know they’ll connect on a deeper level to their work and coworkers, too.” Christopher McGarity, a factory control unit manager, said “We don't really get a chance to try Yamaha products unless we buy them. So to me, this kind of puts some skin in the game for employees that have not been exposed to products other than building them,” said McGarity. “That was really great from my experience, being able to get my hands on it and actually use it.” The program isn’t just e-bikes, there is also a fleet of WaveRunners at West Point Lake. Yamaha Division Manager, Jason Broshear, has taken his family out with him, “It’s seamless. You go out, have fun on the lake, fill up the WaveRunner with
gas, return it to the dock.” The WaveRunner is produced locally, at the Newnan plant. “A lot of our employees may never actually see an end product,” said Broshear. “For example, a forklift operator in our distribution center only sees the parts and shipping operation. They never get to see the products coming off the end of the line. To utilize a WaveRunner that they don't have to worry about purchasing personally, is just a great experience. You get to see the parts you're interacting with every day, working on that end product.” This program is intended in part to foster community among Yamaha employees, and those who have participated all agree that it has been a success on that front. “We talk about Yamaha Pride,” said Wood, who has been with the company for about 17 years. “I feel it every day coming to work. So I'm very happy to be part of the Yamaha family.” McGarity echoed the positive sentiments about their employer. “Working here at Yamaha has been a great experience. It's been able to provide that work-life balance as well as great challenges, opportunities and advancement,” he said. “Yamaha has continued to put opportunities out there, and we try to rise and meet the different challenges on a day-to-day basis. So I would tell anybody that if they could become an answer to a problem, then this is a great place to work, a great place to learn and give back to the community.” Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation of America designs and assembles WaveRunners, ATVs, Side by Sides, and Golf Cars at the Newnan plant. One of Coweta County’s largest private employers, Yamaha is currently expanding the team, hiring for both contract and professional team members. Full-time direct hires, such as welders and engineers enjoy a comprehensive benefits package, including insurance, 401k, profit sharing, and more. Details are at yamahajobs.com.

And so it’s been really cool experience to get to grow up with the company, and I think that’s very valuable.” —Will L., Manufacturing Engineer

The
CHEF …
Grilled Ham Steak With Apple Bacon Jam
The Chefs column highlights our local culinary masters. They share a recipe that has a lot of meaning to them and thankfully, how to make it. (Well at least most of it, sometimes secrets must remain that.) This month’s chef is …
Tina Cannon
Apple Bacon Jam Cut one pound of your favorite bacon into small pieces and cook in cast iron skillet till crisp, add 1 cup of small diced onion (I like to use a sweet onion) and 2 cups diced apples that are partially peeled. (I like fuji apples.)
Tina Cannon has over 35 years in the culinary industry. She is a classically trained chef that has worked in many capacities from banquet, sous, executive chef and a grand champion in BBQ.
Cook until caramelized, on medium heat. Deglaze your pan with 1 oz of your favorite bourbon, stir in 1/4 cup light brown sugar. Once combined and sugar is melted, serve with ham steaks.
She has competed in BBQ competitions across the Southeast since 2009, winning more than $100,000 and over 200 category wins. She has appeared in cooking competition shows on the Travel Channel, Apple TV, Amazon Prime, Destination America, Netflix and Food Network, as well as some local networks.
The
Tina is active in social media as well having her own website and YouTube channel, which she uses to inspire cooks across the world – from Alabama to Zimbabwe. Tina volunteers at the local culinary school teaching and inspiring students in various culinary classes. She is also the chef for Meals on Wheels of Coweta and has prepared over 60,000 meals in 2023 for our homebound seniors in Coweta county. It’s a labor of love for her and her motto is “ I am a classically trained chef and love to cook and there is no better way for me to give back to our community; than to feed those in need.”
Cast Iron Seared Duck With Blueberry Orange Sauce
Score the skin side of the duck breast in half inch slices in each direction. Generously season with kosher salt and my European Blend Seasoning (available at timacannoncooks.com) Heat a cast iron skillet with 2 Tablespoons of high heat cooking oil till it just begins to smoke. Place duck breasts skin side down pressing down to make sure you have good contact with the pan. Let cook for 5 minutes or until skin is crisp. Flip duck breasts over and add 1 tbl of slivered orange zest to the pan. Cook till breasts reach Medium rare, 135-145° max. Set aside to rest while you prepare blueberry orange sauce.
Blueberry orange sauce
Heat 2 tablespoons of salted butter in the same pan that duck breasts were cooked in and add 1 pint of washed fresh blueberries and 1 tablespoon of orange zest, 1 sprig of fresh thyme and rosemary. Stir over medium high heat, once blueberries soften and start to become sauce-like (approximately 5 minutes add 1/4 tsp salt, stir in juice from half of the orange, add 2 tablespoons orange liquor, such as Grand Mariner. Simmer 2 minutes, remove thyme and rosemary sprigs and discard, serve sauce on top of duck.
Ham steaks are an easy meal that can be grilled or pan fried but this apple bacon jam makes it holiday meal worthy.
JOINTS
Everyone has their “go-to” place to eat. It might be with linen tablecloths and waiters in ties, or where you throw peanuts on the floor and carve your initials in the wooden tables. Whatever and wherever, it’s your “joint.” There are lots of these places around here, and we’re out to find them all in The Joints column. And yes, all are White Monkey approved.
