The Interview with Elf on the Shelf
or in a MUG
Briefly describe yourself and what you do/did.
I am part of the senior management team with Santa’s Elves Inc. I head the Investigative Branch, overseeing thousands of elves checking out which children have been naughty or nice. Best piece of business advice you’ve received. There are a couple of things, but that all relate: always tell the truth, obey your parents and keep your word. Follow those and you will always do well in life. If I had it to do over …
I would have fought harder for us to have green outfits instead of red. Green is much better camouflage with Christmas trees. You are going on an extended solo trip.
What three albums and three books would you take?
White Christmas, Carrie Underwood Christmas Album, Willie Nelson – The Classic Christmas album.
Twas the Night Before Christmas, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Polar Express. Tell us one thing about yourself that few people know I am actually taller than people think.
You are hosting a dinner party for six. What five people, living or dead, would you invite and why?
Santa and Mrs. Claus (obvious reasons, they are like my parents), Donner (he’s actually my best reindeer friend), Hermey, he’s the elf who wanted to be a dentist and we got really close saving each other’s lives while chasing the Abominable Snowman, the Abominable Snowman (after Hermey fixed his tooth, we realized he was really nice in real life. Plus he has a funny accent and you should see the way he eats!!)
Name an as yet unfulfilled dream.
I would like to deliver presents with Santa one Christmas. If you weren’t doing what you are, you would be … I love the reindeer, so probably a reindeer herder. Or, a Peppermint candy farmer. Your go-to food.
Santa always brings back cookies – I mean even he can’t eat all the cookies good boys and girls leave out on Christmas Eve.
Favorite movies(s).
A Christmas Story (triple dog dare you)
Elf (Will Ferrell and I are tight. I served as a consultant on that one) Miracle on 34th Street.
Dogs or cats?
Oh please. Reindeer obviously. Your favorite quote and why.
“Whenever you give someone a present or sing a holiday song, you’re helping Santa Claus. To me, that’s what Christmas is all about. Helping Santa Claus!” (LOUIS SACHAR, Wayside School Gets a Little Stranger
Name something that you are extremely glad you did or accomplished.
I learned that one of the most important things in life is to give others another chance. Over the years I have watched children do naughty things, things that would prevent Santa from coming. But we all make mistakes, and I continue to watch these kids and realize they are great. They just had a bad day. By giving a second or third or fourth chance, I learn who they really are. So by doing that, they got great presents from Santa.
What advice would you give your younger self just starting out on their own.
The World says you only get one chance to make a first impression. That’s true. But so what? You might mess up in that first impression, but that does not define you. Keep trying. Keep improving. Never let one instant define you. You are the sum of all your parts, not one part.
We elves try to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns, and syrup.
There’s room for everyone on the Nice List.
Treat every day like Christmas.
Notes from Perry Street
The birth of Jesus Luke 2:1-20
NLT
2 At that time the Roman emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire. 2 (This was the first census taken when Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 All returned to their own ancestral towns to register for this census. 4 And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David’s ancient home. He traveled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee. 5 He took with him Mary, to whom he was engaged, who was now expecting a child.
6 And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. 7 She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them.
The Shepherds and Angels
8 That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. 9 Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, 10 but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. 11 The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! 12 And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.”
13 Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.”
15 When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Let’s go to Bethlehem! Let’s see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
16 They hurried to the village and found Mary and Joseph. And there was the baby, lying in the manger. 17 After seeing him, the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child. 18 All who heard the shepherds’ story were astonished, 19 but Mary kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often. 20 The shepherds went back to their flocks, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen. It was just as the angel had told them.

Why Local Matters in Real Estate
Have you ever heard the phrase “shop local” ?
Many of us prefer to conduct business with a local merchant, even if it is a little more expensive than using a national or regional business. By doing so, you aid the local economy and do business with people you know and trust instead of having a transaction relationship with a national entity. Locally, the Main Street Newnan organization does a great job promoting “shop local” for the businesses in downtown Newnan.
You may or may not think this concept applies to real estate, but I have seen many clients and customers learn the hard way that it does. Nowadays, it is very easy for a prospective home buyer to go online, search for mortgage lenders, find the best interest rate, lowest closing costs and click a button.
While I have seen this work out for some buyers, most of the time it does not end well, at least in my experience. Whether it is a lack of attention to detail, over-delegation, lack of follow-up or a host of other issues, these buyers coming to me with an “online lender” end up in trouble.
I have seen deals get delayed, or worse, fall apart. A good Realtor will have many local mortgage officers that are hungry to earn your business, will work hard, give you their attention and make the loan approval process smooth for you.
REALTORS
A local lender’s reputation is on the line, so they are motivated to do their best. When you are purchasing a new home, you have enough to worry about between moving logistics, finances, and potential job and school district changes. Selecting a reliable and competent mortgage lender is essential and should be your first step in the home-buying process.
Using a local and knowledgeable Realtor is extremely important as well. We Realtors make a living based on the quality of the service that we give our clients and our reputation.
We are motivated to give you the best experience possible as satisfied clients give us referrals, the lifeblood of our business.
In a competitive market with a low listing supply, a local Realtor who has their pulse on things is essential. We can find properties through our network that are not listed for sale or may be hitting the market soon. Being the first to know about these possibilities, could be the difference between you finding your dream home or missing out. The same idea applies to selling your home. We may have the perfect buyer waiting before you even need to prepare your home to list. Just another reason, to “shop local.”
Jess Barron is an Associate Broker with Lindsey’s Inc. Realtors and former President of the Newnan-Coweta Board of Realtors.
Some Reading Recommendations …
The holidays are a very busy time for a lot of us. Make sure you take some time to relax and enjoy this season. It will surprise no one to hear that my favorite way to relax is to sit down with a good book. Here are a few books I have enjoyed this year in many different genres!
When the World Tips Over by Jandy Nelson: This was a magical story about a family with a father who disappeared and a girl who sweeps into town and changes their lives.
The Third Gilmore Girl by Kelly Bishop: This is the biography of the Broadway and Gilmore Girls star. This was a nice glimpse into the life of a beloved tv show actress.
The Violin Conspiracy by Brendan Slocumb. Almost every single person is Ray’s life was against him except his beloved Grandmother. She gave him her grandfather’s violin which started a whole chain of events.
From Here to the Great Unknown by Lisa Marie Presley and Riley Keough. This is a book written by the daughter and granddaughter of Elvis Presley. This was a deeply sad and moving book about the hardships of growing up in a family that was American royalty.
The Wedding People by Alison Espach: This book was about a woman getting a second chance at life. She was stuck in her current life to the point of wanting to escape life. And through a chance booking at a hotel where everyone else is there for a wedding she finds that second chance.
The Briar Club by Kate Quinn: This is a historical fiction thriller book set in 1950s Washington DC. This book was so well done. I loved that it was multiple points of view but didn’t go back and forth. I was immersed in one point of view before moving on to the next character. It was like having multiple stories in one, but they are all there in each story. I loved this story.
The Carnegie Barnes & Noble Book Fair will be held December 5th-8th.

You can even do this online when using Bookfair code 12819975. This is a great way to help the Carnegie purchase more books! And remember if you ever need a book recommendation stop by the Carnegie and we can find the perfect book for you.

The Film Fix … Streaming Edition
Gladiator II (now playing) – l Fix Rating 6/10 – Director Ridley Scott returns with this sequel to his 2000 multiple Oscar winner. This installment is fun but not as award-worthy as its predecessor. While Denzel Washington will get the most notice for his often bizarre (and humorous) turn as the scheming Macrinus, the palace intrigue his character engineers detracts from the thrilling gladiatorial combat that should dominate the narrative.
The story has soldier Lucius (a muscled-up Paul Mescal) captured in Numidia by Roman forces led by General Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal). Naturally, Lucius plots revenge as he makes his way through the ranks of would-be gladiators, catching the eye of Washington’s opportunistic Macrinus. In no time, Lucius finds himself in the arena, where the movie shows signs of great excitement.
But the film gets bogged down with callbacks to the original in an attempt to give it artificial dramatic weight. What audiences want to see is epic gladiator battles, which are present in the movie but have less visceral impact this time. Sadly, the grandeur of the Coliseum is lacking here even though, at one point, the structure is filled with water, and ships collide violently with gladiators falling into waters inhabited by hungry sharks. It’s not quite as thrilling as it sounds.
The Brutalist (coming soon – Best of 2024) – l Fix Rating 9/10 – Sure to be a top Academy Award contender, “The Brutalist” is director and co-writer Brady Corbet’s third feature since “The Childhood of a Leader” in 2015. Corbet is an emerging talent whose films excite cineastes but never quite feel complete. For example, his 2018 effort “Vox Lux” starts powerfully but meanders to a conclusion.
What Corbet has as a filmmaker is a feel for authentic and engaging visual storytelling, and “The Brutalist” is easily his best film to date. Clocking in at a whopping three hours and thirty-five minutes, the story follows a super-talented architect named László Toth (Adrien Brody, delivering a possible second Oscar-worthy performance) who flees Europe after WWII to restart in the United States.
But once here, László finds obstacles that threaten. His depression deepens as he longs to be reunited with his wife Erzsébet (Felicity Jones) left behind. A ray of hope emerges in the form of wealthy benefactor Harrison Lee Van Buren, Sr. (a fantastically selfish and out-of-touch portrayal by the gifted Guy Pearce). He commissions László to design and build a massive community center.
“The Brutalist” is an enormous achievement on almost every level. Shown in two halves, with an intermission in between, the first section will enchant viewers, while the second half offers an uncompromisingly bleak vision. Still, Corbet’s commitment to his own vision is why the movie is so powerful.
Nosferatu (December 7) – l Fix Rating 8/10 – This third feature film bearing the name of “Nosferatu” is credited as an adaptation of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic that was an unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula.” German director Werner Herzog also adapted the material in 1979 with his frequent collaborator Klaus Kinski in the lead.
“Nosferatu (2024)” comes from director Robert Eggers, the auteur responsible for “The Witch,” “The Lighthouse,” and “The Northman.” In many ways, “Nosferatu” is Eggers’s most broadly appealing film. The well-known story centers around the mysterious Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård), who sends for a young real estate attorney named Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult) to complete the purchase of a home in Germany. However, once the young newlywed Thomas ventures to the Count’s far-off castle, he discovers that the client’s intentions are downright sinister.
Back home, Thomas’ suffering wife, Ellen (an excellent Lily-Rose Depp), has terrifying visions and seeks assistance for her husband’s immediate return. But if Thomas does come back, he will not be
himself and will likely not be alone.
Egger’s take on the “Dracula” tale is inventive and scary. Skarsgård, who played the frightful Pennywise in the “It” films, makes a horrifying vampire cleverly shown chiefly in shadow.
Willem Dafoe appears as the professor who might assist in fighting the Count. Still, instead of making the academic an all-knowing vampire killer, Eggers’ carefully constructed screenplay allows for a distinct learning curve. This lack of knowledge means that the Count has the upper hand for most of the film, putting the characters and the viewer on edge.
Streaming Selects:
Kneecap (December 2) – l Fix Rating 8/10 – This entertaining movie will likely garner Ireland a Best International Feature Film Oscar nomination. The story is a mostly true biopic of the Irish hip-hop band Kneecap. The movie is presented in Irish and English, and language is the narrative’s focus as the young rappers play themselves in this rousing production.
Maria (December 11) – Angelina Jolie stars in the biography of opera singer Maria Callas. It’s set in the 1970s in Paris during the last days of the great artist who died in 1977 at 53. Word is that Jolie is terrific in this film directed by Pablo Larraín (completing his trilogy alongside “Jackie” and “Spencer”) that’s written by Steven Knight (see “Locke” and “Eastern Promises”).
A Charlie Brown Christmas (stream free December 14 and December 15) – Apple is making the 1965 animated Christmas classic available to stream free on their platform for two days. Join Charlie Brown, Schroeder, Lucy, Patty, Pig-Pen, Linus, and, of course, Snoopy as Charlie tries to find the deeper meaning to the Christmas holiday.
Wonder Pets: In the City (December 13, 2024) – Izzy the Guinea Pig, Tate the Snake, and Zuri the Bunny leave the kindergarten classroom in NYC to explore the planet in their “Jetcar.” “In the City” is a new season of the beloved show.
Juror #2 (December 20) – l Fix Rating 6/10 — The controversy surrounding the muted theatrical release of Clint Eastwood’s likely final film centered on the limited number of theaters released last month. And while I think the movie would have made money had the studio elected to release it wider, “Juror #2” is right at home in streaming. The story is like something from a John Grisham novel significantly influenced by the classic “12 Angry Men.” When a young man is picked to serve on a murder jury, he discovers that he may have a connection to the crime. The film is set in Savannah.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew (first two episodes on December 3, 2024) – As Disney slows the serialization of the Star Wars universe on the small screen, “Skeleton Crew” is one of several shows in the pipeline hoping to buck the downward trend. This younger-skewing series has four kids making a discovery that will take them on an exciting adventure. Jude Law becomes their de facto leader as the tikes try to return to their home planet while staying alive.
Theatrical Teasers:
The Order (December 6) — Jude Law is reportedly in the running for best actor notice in this thriller from director Justin Kurzel (see 2015’s “Macbeth”). Law plays an FBI agent investigating a series of bank robberies that may be linked to a group of domestic terrorists.
Nightbitch (December 6) — Amy Adams plays a stay-at-home mom whose domestic malaise transforms her into a dog. The outlandish premise should allow Adams to show her acting range, but the film hasn’t generated much awards buzz. “Nightbitch” is directed by Marielle Heller (see “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”).
Kraven the Hunter (December 13) — Another entry in Sony’s Spider-Man universe, this MCU-adjacent project has been kicking around for some time. The film is an origin story for the title character (played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and his complicated relationship with his criminal father (played by Russell Crowe). The trailers make good use of Johnny Cash’s “The Man Comes Around,” but the action teased seems all too familiar.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (December 20) — The third film in the popular Sonic series has Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles facing off against Shadow. Jim Carrey returns as Dr. Ivo Robotnik and his grandfather Gerald. Keanu Reeves provides the voice of Shadow the Hedgehog.
A Complete Unknown (December 25) – Timothée Chalamet makes a terrific dead-ringer for Bob Dylan in this biopic from director James Mangold (See “Walk the Line,” “Logan,” and “Ford v Ferrari”). The story, which does appear to provide some of the great folk artist’s origins, concerns Dylan’s change to electric guitar at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965. With the strength of Chalamet’s stardom and Dylan’s classic sound, “A Complete Unknown” could be one of the holiday season’s biggest hits.
SUNDAY: German Chocolate, Chocolate Covered Cherries
When a professional in any field finds a home at a company whose standards for high-quality work and overall values align with his or her own, it’s a perfect match.
Belize Ellison, a senior sustainability engineer at Yamaha, has found such a match. Her role involves reducing Yamaha’s carbon footprint to enhance its business model.
“I want to help us be the best Yamaha we can today without compromising future Yamaha’s ability to continue to be the best,” she said. “That is my job.”
Ellison is thrilled to work for a company which values the same things she is personally passionate about when it comes to sustainability. As a relatively young engineer less than a decade into her career, she also appreciates being part of a brand recognized around the world for excellence – “the best of the best,” as she put it.

Piedmont Newnan Honored Eight Nurses at Residency Program Celebration
A total of eight registered nurses from the Fall 2023 cohort completed the enhanced Nurse Residency Program, and were recently recognized at a celebration.
The Fall 2023 nurse resident class included ICU nurse Courtney Clark, RN; IMCU nurses Deysi De Leon, RN and Irene Rusev, RN; Med Surg nurses Ashley Martin, RN, Breanna Hatfield, RN, Rachelle Becina, RN, and Alexis Fairclough, RN; and NICU nurse Lakaria Lambert.
“I’m excited to watch these nurses take the next step in their nursing careers,” said nurse residency program coordinator Krysten Johnson, MSN, RN. an opportunity to get to know each of them and watch as they’ve become more confident in their abilities as well as grow their clinical skills.”
One of the highlights of the residency program is the presentation of evidencebased projects. Nurse residents are asked to select a topic they are passionate about that links evidence-based care to practice outcomes. They conduct a literary search, develop a PICO question, create a background summary, report a summary statement based on analysis and outcomes based off their literary searches. “Serving Patients and their Family Post Critical Care,”
“Importance of Equipment Needed for Unexpected Deliveries in the ED” are just a few examples of the evidence-based project presentation topics.
“The nurse residents delivered oral presentations to nursing leadership, and sometimes these findings and suggestions are implemented on our units,” Johnson.
Piedmont Newnan’s Transition to Practice Nurse Residency Program a formal, structured, evidence-based, 12-month program designed to foster Piedmont nurses who are competent, confident, and committed clinicians who practice evidence-based care. Through learning and clinical experiences with preceptors, ongoing support from experienced educators, mentors and leadership, the residents are integrated into a culture that prioritizes and supports their growth.
New nursing school graduates are welcomed three times a year (spring, summer and fall) into the organization. Currently, there are 51 nurse residents in the Newnan Transition to Practice Program.
“It is proven that there are many benefits to the new graduate nurse, the patient, and the hospital when an established nurse residency program is in place,” shared Wilkins-Howard. “We’re looking forward to the residency program’s continued growth and success.”
“The goal of the program is to enhance the onboarding and residency experience of our new graduate nurses beyond just skill acquisition to address the array of challenges in the transition from student nurse to competent, confident practitioner,” said Director of Clinical Practice Andrea Wilkins-Howard.
Piedmont is empowering Georgians by changing health care. We continue to fuel Georgia’s growth through safe, high-quality care close to home through an integrated health care system that provides a hassle-free, unified experience. We are a private, not-for-profit organization with more than 12,000 donors annually that for centuries has sought to make a positive difference in every life we touch in the communities we serve. Across our 1,755 physical locations we care for more than 4 million patients and serve communities that comprise 85 percent of Georgia’s population. This includes 25 hospitals, 74 Piedmont Urgent Care centers, 25 QuickCare locations, 1,875 Piedmont Clinic physician practices and nearly 3,200 Piedmont Clinic members. Our patients conveniently engage with Piedmont online, as they scheduled more than 612,000 online appointments and over 163,000 virtual visits. With more than 47,000 care givers we are the largest Georgia-based private employer of Georgians, who all came for the job, but stayed for the people. In 2024 and 2023, Piedmont has earned recognition from Newsweek as one of America’s Greatest Workplaces for Diversity and also as one of America’s Greatest Workplaces for Women. In 2022, Forbes ranked Piedmont on its list of the Best Large Employers in the United States. In addition, Piedmont provided nearly $390 million in community benefit programming and uncompensated care in Fiscal Year 2023.

The Featured Joint
Everyone has their “go-to” place to eat. It might be with linen tablecloths and waiters in ties, or where you throw peanuts on the floor and carve your initials in the wooden tables. Whatever and wherever, it’s your “joint.” This month’s featured joint is …
The Whimzical Cafe
The word” whimsical” is defined as: playfully quaint or fanciful, especially in an appealing and amusing way.
We think “whimzical,” with a “z” fits that definition as well, just add “a fun place to eat.” Located in downtown Newnan across the street from the old Coweta County Administration Building, Whimzical Cafe takes you on a food journey befitting its name.
The lunch menu includes appetizers, sandwiches, pressed sandwiches, salads, flatbreads, and some crazy good “sweet endings.” Choices include Salami Get This, Gyr-o Hero, Brie Mine, Jurisatic Pork, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatball, and so on. As an aside, the Double Dipper (prime rib, horseradish, cheddar, and au jus) is awesome.
They’ve got brunch as well. Before we get into that, we strongly suggest you plan to go for lunch or brunch. Otherwise, you will be staring at both menus and by the time you order, it’s time to get back to work. Choose one, and come back another time for the other menu.
Back to brunch. The signature dish must be “The Whimzy.”
Just a simple biscuit “stacked with ham, fried egg, housemade crab cake, hollandaise, and tarragon. Served with cheese grits.” Another aside, the cheese grits hit that “awesome” category too.
Lots of choices. It’s the place where you can’t wait to go back and try the (fill in the blank).
Hours:
Monday, Tuesday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Wednesday - Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. 770-755-7709 • 33 East Broad St., Newnan https://whimzicalcafe.com/

Yes Virginia, There Is A Santa Claus
Eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor and the quick response was printed as an unsigned editorial Sept. 21, 1897.
DEAR EDITOR:
I am 8 years old.
Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.
Papa says, ‘If you see it in THE SUN it’s so.’
Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?
VIRGINIA O’HANLON.
115 WEST NINETY-FIFTH STREET.
VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.
Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how
dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.
Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.
You may tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.
No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.
