February, the highlights for this month are as follows: Groundhog Day, Ash Wednesday, and Valentine’s Day. Each day has their own popularity and followers. I have noticed over the years that Valentine’s Day can be beautiful or bittersweet for many. The concept and intention of Valentine’s Day is to express one’s love and desires of one’s heart. Having experienced an extreme summer’s weather, we now seem to be experiencing extreme winter weather. Some may say that may stay with us due to climate change.
Due to my aging process, I am having to meet many challenges, sometimes daily. To help me better combat and overcome such challenges, I am studying old school philosophers such as the stoic, the very mindset of our founding fathers that were indeed constantly challenged by the school of hard knocks.
My many Books of the Month provide me with wisdom to apply to my daily life, to extract the most joy from all of life’s experiences. Extreme thinking leads to extreme experiences and amazing adventures. I am now living life to the most fullest than at any time before I moved to this state and town. I am even now in the middle of making positive changes in all areas of my daily life. I am being swept away by positive, spiritual forces day after day.
There is a critical need for blood donations now. The Senoia Optimist Club’s quarterly blood drive is Monday, February 5 1 to 5 p.m. at Senoia United Methodist Church 229 Bridge St., Senoia, GA https://www.redcrossblood.org/give.html/donation-time

This is my third essay on the topic of “The Positive Effects of Death.” The mindset of old-school philosophers can indeed be very helpful in putting life and death into proper perspective. The whole point of this essay is to be fully alive in spite of our coming death, to enjoy deepest experiences while we still canjust as they are.

Mr. Personality
My Book of the Month is titled “Karma” by Sadhguru. I found this book to contain much wisdom about the subject of karma, much that is often misunderstood by many, myself included. I want to point out that the author’s life and tradition is steeped in karma, and may be hard to grasp by the outside of such a common tradition. I found that I often do not want to give up my own opinions and concepts of what I came to believe karma is for me. Seems I have been known to apply such opinions and concepts to faith and religion etc. etc. Keeping an open mind helps. I am truly impressed at the way the author expressed his thoughts and ideas most clearly. Read it for yourself, accept what speaks to your heart and mind, and read it again. Next month, I shall have a new topic and essay and another Book of the Month. Stay tuned. Peace, love, and much respect Your friend, Mr. Personality

PAPER
John A. Winters, Publisher, Editor john@wintersmedia.net Corby Carlin Winters, Ambassador At Large corby@wintersmedia.net
My wife needed to borrow my phone for a couple of hours.
Joey Howard, Digital Editor / Sales 404.698.0734 joey@wintersmedia.net
I will let that last sentence stand as-is for a few minutes. Okay, that’s long enough. My guess is about a third did the big-eye and gulp move; another third came up with every excuse and then some; and the remainder just handed it over and gave her the phone - with the correct PIN. Sociologists, psychologists and other “ists” would see this as a great opportunity to study what one could argue is the ultimate marriage test. Basically, would you hand over your phone to your spouse? For those trying to be cute and hand over an old rotary phone, sorry, we are talking about that “smartphone” you spend hours with every day and does not include a landline. Yes, hours every day. Is there anything we spend more time using or doing in a day? Breathing and other required functions to stay alive don’t count. Anyhoo, back to The Little Black Dress and her need for my phone. There are two reasons. The first is relatively easy. I am still fighting this whatever has knocked me down and could not attend the Kiwawnis Clubs’ Citizen of the Year awards ceremony. Enter my trusted Colleague (she likes that term) to take photos for The Paper and The Weekly. She is using mine because it takes very good photos. My Colleague’s phone does not, because … And we come to the second reason. We have “encouraged” Corby (her real name) that it is time to let go and move on to a new phone.
Levi Winters, Social & Visual Media levi@wintersmedia.net Ruth Harris Doyal, Composition 770.254.1421 info@wintersmedia.net The PAPER office is located at 15 Perry Street, Newnan, GA 30263 Mailing address is: P. The “why” is for several reasons. One, if she touches any kind of remote, phone, or Bluetooth-type device, there is a chance it will either blow up or it will take you hours to get your home screen back to where it was. Buttons will suddenly have new functions, like the volume up button now gives you the weather. Some cosmic touch thing.
The PAPER is published by Winters Media & Publishing, Inc., P. O. Box 757, Newnan, GA 30264
Two, our dear Colleague has never met an email or a photo she does not love. And wants to keep it “just in case.” These photos include the ones you accidentally take of the ceiling or the floor (lots of those), blurred faces, and other photos where you kinda go “What the heck is that.”
John A. Winters, President Corby Carlin Winters, Vice President
If you listen carefully, you can hear her phone sob as she tries to save yet another photo or email. We don’t think the “delete” key has worked for quite some time. But the night was a success and congratulations to all 10 of the nominees. I say success in part because our Colleague came back with some very nice photos we published in this publication. A couple of side notes. It was quite interesting to see how many photos our former pageant queen was in. She was supposed to be taking photos, but somehow she became the photo. Secondly, it is very, very weird to pick up your wife’s phone … she left it for me in case of emergency … although you can only hold it a certain way … and the name of the caller is, well, you. I remember looking at my name on her phone as she called. I thought things would get really weird if I happened to answer and start a conversation with myself. On the other hand, it took her a while to actually get me, because she would call my number and my phone would answer - the one she was holding. So she had to call herself to get me. I know, weird. Finally, it was on this day 30 years ago that the LBD, who wore a pink wedding gown, said “I do.” It has been a wild ride and there is no one else I would rather have at my side. Love you to my Colleague, the Little Black Dress, The Paper Girl, and our Ambassador at Large.
John

What’s Trending with Corby Carlin Winters
On The Fashion Scene
Fashion feels fabulous this season and anything seems to go. It is your vibe and your personality that shines through when it comes to fashion. The easiest and quickest way to change up your fashion is with shoes, accessories, and jewelry.
(Corby is known to many as the Little Black Dress and The Paper Girl. She has a passion for fashion and home decor and is crazy about fabulous shoes and anything in leopard print. She is a trained counselor and loves writing, ministering, speaking and offering businesses growth coaching. She treasures spending time with good friends, Winters and the Sons of Thunder.)
Home Decor
Organizing and streamlining your life leads to happiness and great mental health. Many seem to be taking a hard look at their homes and the excess they have. This is a perfect time to purge. There is a link between too much clutter and stress in our lives. So if you are ready to reclaim your space and let go of your surplus you may need a good friend as I have or a Professional Organizer you trust.
If frugality is key then Invest in statement pieces that don’t break the bank. That said this Spring you are going to see lots of short shorts, mini skirts, and jewelry. Layers upon layers of necklaces, bangles, and beads aren’t for the faint of heart.
If you need a quick pick me up in home decor try wallpaper, either peel and stick or the traditional wallpaper, is hot as ever. Painting or gilding accent walls is a fast way to capture a whole new vibe as well. Accent pillows and washable rugs can get you in the mood for a new year and a fresh start.
Pillows from Gillyweed
Our Local Life
Roundabouts continue to be a trend in our area. Although you do not have to stop and wait, we are to take turns, not plowing through the roundabouts. They continue to be popular because they are cost effective, efficient, and effective - but can be maddening if others do not know how to use them. The Trilith community continues to grow from shops, food, and wonderful activities for the whole family. It is a fun place to spend the day or the afternoon. The Passion City Church opened another location in Trilith. So if you like Louie Giglio and his wife Shelly, you can now experience Passion City close to home on Sundays at 9:30 a.m.

Real Estate Es tate
Preparing Your Home for Spring Selling Season By Jess Barron, Lindsey’s Inc. Realtors The spring time is the best time to sell your home. More homes are sold from spring time to the fall than any other time of the year (per GAMLS). Real estate correlates with both the weather and school year. Buyers prefer to look at homes when the weather is nice. Families prefer to move their families once the school year is over. Children are already out of school then and do not have to change schools mid-year. The
last day of school for Coweta County in 2024 is May 24th. When considering the average market time to sell, a 30-60 day closing process, it’s best to list in the spring to accomplish a late spring or summer move. The first day of spring officially begins on March 19th. As a Realtor, we have seen activity pick up the last couple of weeks in preparation for the spring selling season. Home owners have begun to prepare their homes for this busy time and contact real estate agents for assistance in pricing and marketing. The next part of this article will provide some helpful tips from Realtor.com, for selling your home. Tip No. 1: Get realistic about how much your home is worth It is natural to think your home is priceless, or hope it is worth at least more than when you bought it. Many sellers make the mistake of placing a pie-in-the-sky price on their home with the hopes that some buyer will bite. But the reality is overpriced homes tend to sit and sit on the market. Potential buyers begin to think that something is “wrong” with a house when it sits on the market and become apprehensive to pursue the property. You want to be able to make a great first impression when the home hits the market. A correct price can often result in multiple offers and a contract price well-above list price.
Clutter can make a spacious home feel claustrophobic. It is crucial that you toss, donate, gift, or recycle anything you do not love or use. This is also true for those hidden areas like your closets and cabinets. Buyers will poke their heads in these areas. You must also be able to de-personalize your property. Buyers will need to envision themselves in your home. Family pictures, souvenirs, trophies, etc., along with clutter, prevent the buyers from doing so. Tip No. 3: Keep your home show-ready 24/7 It can be difficult to keep your home picture-perfect for buyers all the time, but it is well worth the pain and suffering. Having your property listed on the market will require you to live a certain way while your home is listed. This means keeping your home clean and presentable at all times. This includes smells and pets. Landscaping and keeping a yard “fresh” is to not be overlooked. You do not know when that perfect buyer will be calling to your home! News and Musings … Congratulations and a big “thank you” to Battalion Chief Jeff Woody with the Coweta Fire Department who is retiring after 30 years of serving the citizens of Coweta County. [ [ [ A lot of people only need to attempt doing one push-up to realize how unfit they are. [ [ [ After over a decade as the Golden Knights, West Georgia Technical College (WGTC) has a new mascot, Knightro the Knighthawk. A mascot committee made up of WGTC faculty and staff, chose the nighthawk to represent the College because it embodies many of the characteristics of WGTC students: adaptable, diligent, resourceful, and determined. [ [ [ The American Red Cross is experiencing an emergency blood shortage as the nation faces the lowest number of people giving blood in 20 years. If you are eligible, your blood donation will significantly impact the lives of others. Visit redcrossblood.org to find a blood drive in your area. [ [ [ Everything is bulletproof if you have enough of it. [ [ [ The city of Newnan Fire Department recently received a new Rescue Unit, which will be used at Station 2 (off of Lower Fayetteville Road). Rescue Unit 2 is designed for medical emergencies and will enable first responders to deploy quickly to medical calls. [ [ [ Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Company in Newnan is committed to inspiring the love of the outdoors, sustaining the natural environment and ecosystems, and supporting local education initiatives. Students from the Kiwanis Kids (K-Kids) program at Welch Elementary School in Newnan paid a visit to take part in planting a pollinator garden. It was a great opportunity to get hands-on experience with STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) activities while getting away from the classroom and enjoying outdoor life. [ [ [ All of us live less than 65 miles from space, yet only a very few will ever go there. [ [ [ Sharpsburg native Drew Cronic has joined the Navy football staff as offensive coordinator. Cronic comes to Navy from Mercer, where he put together a 28-17 (.622) record over the last four years, including a 22-10 (.688) mark in the rugged Southern Conference. Cronic is considered one of the more innovative offensive minds across all levels of college football. Driven by the motto “Raise the Bar,” Cronic has been a head coach for a combined eight years at three different schools and has compiled a career record of 75-23

[ [ [ West Georgia Technical College (WGTC) has named Mariah Moses of Newnan as its 2024 Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education (EAGLE) winner. The Leadership Institute recognizes and honors those students who have demonstrated superior achievement in adult education classes and programs. [ [ [ Smokers are more likely to survive lost in the woods because they carry a lighter. [ [ [ The West Georgia Technical College Foundation was recently awarded a $3,000 Traditional Grant from the Coweta Community Foundation (CCF) to support its Project CARE program. Project CARE was created in 2009 to provide financial aid to students and employees of West Georgia Technical College (WGTC) who are in need. [ [ [ It’s crazy how many people spend 40 or more hours a week doing something they aren’t even passionate about or enjoying. [ [ [ The city of Newnan celebrated the completion of the Fire Training Facility on 473 Greison Trail. Complete with a burn building, educational training room, and office space, the facility offers opportunities to train the Newnan Fire Department in the latest techniques. [ [ [ In case you missed it, Lily Abigail, 7 lbs., 3 oz., and 20 inches long, was the first baby of the year born at Piedmont Newnan Hospital. Proud parents, Cara and Blake Harmon, and big sister Layla (7), welcomed a healthy baby girl at 9:39 p.m. on January 1. This is the couple’s second child, and both girls were delivered at Piedmont Newnan. [ [ [ The entire population of dogs is replaced every 20 years [ [ [ The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office has a new chief deputy, Milton Beck. He retired from Cobb County Sheriff’s Office in 2019 after serving that community for 30 years. He has known and worked with Sheriff Lenn Wood for many years. “He brings a vast array of leadership, experience and discernment to the Coweta Sheriff’s Office and will us help continue to deliver the professional law enforcement services that the residents of this county have grown accustomed to, deserve and expect,” a Facebook post said. [ [ [ In other news with the sheriff’s office, two new command staff appointments were announced. Major Warren Campbell has been appointed to Lieutenant Colonel and Lieutenant David Hill has been appointed to Captain. [ [ [ Burning the haystack is an easy way of finding the needle. [ [ [ We’re often too young to realize how big of a decision picking your first phone number will be. [ [ [

Once Upon A Time: Out & About Newnan Cotton Mill and Mill Village with Katie Anderson
One of the best things about Newnan is how we preserve our history. With six historic districts, our city is bursting with stories from the past. Recently, I saw a sign for the Newnan Cotton Mill and Mill Village Historic District, and had to know more.
Today, as you catch the LINC on Field Street, you’ll see the FreeMasons building – in another time, the mill office building. As you continue to walk, you’ll notice the Lofts Apartments, aka the original mill buildings, and an iron water tower that once provided protection from fires in the mill. A spring-fed pond (now under a boardwalk along the LINC) supplied the water, which washed back into the pond after being sprayed on the building. Keep strolling through C.J. Smith Park, once a baseball field built for the mill workers, and you’ll see some of the historic mill village. The first worker homes built by the mill, called “saddlebag houses”, were built on Factory Street (now Field Street) and Murray Street. Later, three additional streets of duplexes and two-story saltbox houses were built for workers on Wilcoxen, Berry, and Glenn Streets. There are also five shotgun mill houses that were built on Cole Street and East Washington Street.
I’m talking about the area that is now Newnan Lofts Apartments, including the skate park/C.J. Smith Park, two churches, several streets of homes, and the beginning (or end) of the LINC. Turns out, once upon a time, it was a thriving cotton mill and mill village.
On Murray Street, the mill manager’s house still stands, as does the original Mills Chapel (now Sword of the Lord Church), and Lovejoy Methodist Church, all built as part of the mill village.
According to Winston Skinner, retired news editor of the Newnan Times-Herald and local historian extraordinaire, the mill village has held modern-day reunions with workers, workers’ family members, and even owners’ descendants attending. “The mill village had a great sense of community then that has continued into present times.” Skinner also notes that working at the mill wasn’t an easy life. The work was difficult and at times, unsafe. Like most mills in the South at the time, the mill was segregated by race and gender.
In April 2002, the area was designated as a historic district. The Newnan Cotton Mill was established in 1888 along the railroad to the west, and the district borders go up to Wilcoxen Street to the north, Farmer Street to the east, and East Washington Street to the south.
Workers were getting injured at alarming rates. In Jeff Bishop’s Coweta County: A Brief History, Clifford Banks Glover recounted “the safety record was terrible…some of those machines would be running so fast that you’d cut yourself by just barely touching it with your finger. We had terrible accidents.” Things got so bad that in 1934, a General Textile Strike was called, and Newnan Cotton Mill workers picketed with textile workers across the country. During the strike, the Georgia National Guard and local civil authorities arrested picketers. They sent them to
detention camps at Fort McPherson until the end of the strike three weeks later. (– Emily Kimbell, Be Local) Later, during WWII, the mill produced yarn for parachute and harness equipment, sometimes operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week. By the 1950s, Newnan Cotton Mill employed over 1000 workers. Over the next few decades, it changed hands several times. Fast forward to 2024, the community remains with a multi-use path, a skate park, a playground, historic single-family homes, and upscale apartments. As Skinner said, and I paraphrase, these homes and buildings were built in another time and another life, but the structures outlive the people, to tell another story for another day.

NEWNAN
Piedmont Newnan Recognizes American Heart Month
Healthy Sleep Habits During the Winter Months Now that we’re well into the time of year where the clocks reset, and the sun starts setting before we’ve even had a chance to eat dinner, many of us may still be struggling to adjust. While we did get an extra hour of sleep that first night, time change tends to throw our sleep cycle off balance in a way we don’t really recover from. For some of us, it’s an excuse to go to bed as soon as it’s gets dark out, and while that seems like good way to make sure you’re getting enough sleep at night, it usually results in someone waking up around 2 or 3 in the morning, and then feeling tired anyway by the time it’s actually time to get up. For others, it becomes harder to wind down at night, as they adjust to longer exposure to darkness, and their brains stop associating sun down with bedtime, and that’s if they aren’t already stepping up their caffeine intake to combat feeling tired earlier in the day. However, it is possible to adjust to this time of year without just winging it until Spring. “Getting sunshine each day is key,” says Karen Hacker, M.D., who specializes in Family Medicine at Piedmont Physicians at White Oak. “Our bodies naturally produce more melatonin during colder months due to less daylight, but this is also being heightened by multiple factors.” Whether you’re the kind of person who stays up later and sleeps past sunrise, or get up before sunrise and are falling asleep before it’s even gone down, you’re further minimizing your already limited exposure to daylight. And on top of that, we all tend to spend less time outside, when a daily walk is more crucial than ever— and not just because we need the extra light exposure. After all, lack of exercise or decreased frequency of exercise is another factor that disrupts your circadian rhythm. If you stay inactive for long periods of time, your body’s energy levels will adjust, and you’ll have less energy overall. Temperature and other environmental fluctuations can also impact your sleep. Overheating or underheating your house will make it harder to fall asleep, and even harder to stay asleep. While everyone’s preferences differ slightly, studies show the ideal temperature for sleep is around 65 degrees (which, in the Winter, is good news for your heat bill). But the brisk air is also much dryer, meaning you’ll likely feel discomfort in your throat, eyes, and nasal passageways, so a humidifier is also something to think about.
Heart disease has been the leading cause of death in the U.S. for over 100 years straight, since 1921, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Heart disease along with stroke, which is the fifth leading cause of death, claims more lives in the U.S. than all forms of cancer and chronic lower respiratory disease combined, based on the most recent data available. The American Heart Association estimates nearly half of all people in the U.S. have some type of cardiovascular disease (CVD), including coronary heart disease, heart failure, stroke and, most notably, high blood pressure. However, recent studies done by the American Heart Association, show that most people do not know the significant impact of heart disease. In the survey, only 49% of people named heart disease as the leading cause of death; 16% said they didn’t know the leading cause and 18% listed cancer as the top cause of death of people in the U.S. Piedmont Newnan Hospital is recognizing American Heart Month as an important time to educate Georgians about cardiovascular disease and ways to prevent it, including encouraging staff to wear red this month in honor of Heart Month.

“Cardiovascular disease can lead to heart attack, stroke, decreased life expectancy and quality of life,” said Timothy Lacny, director of cardiology at Piedmont Newnan. “Heart Month is a good reminder to check with your doctor about any known risk factors or family history of cardiac disease.”
Giving you the power to
protect yourself
High blood pressure is a leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke, yet with proper treatment and management, it can be controlled and one’s risk for cardiovascular disease can be greatly reduced. The first step toward reducing any risk factor for cardiovascular disease is awareness.
“These seasonal charges are nothing new,” adds Dr. Hacker. “Our bodies are designed to adapt to them, so it’s important to remember to work with ourselves, even when our pre-established habits push us to do the opposite.” of against ourselves.
Regular check-ups can help detect early signs of cardiovascular disease. One of the most important steps to help deter cardiovascular disease is to quit smoking. Implementing a regular exercise regimen and healthy diet along with controlling your blood pressure and cholesterol can also decrease your risk. Family medical history can also affect an individual’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Discussing this topic with your doctor can aid in finding the best treatment options for you.

Keris Kares’ 2024 year of initiatives! We’re excited that this year marks 10 years of making an impact for children, families and educators. This year will truly be special and we look forward to you being a part of this milestone celebration! There are 5 initiatives: Y Brain Cancer Initiative; Y Family Emergency Fund; Y Food for Families Program; Y 4 the Arts and our 2024 Keris Kares Y Royal Run.
10 Years!
‘Cancer Stops with Me’ Brain Cancer Research Initiative In 2013, at the age of 4, Keris was diagnosed with an inoperable, cancerous brain tumor. Her diagnosis forever connected Keris Kares Inc. to the pediatric cancer community and the brain tumor community simultaneously. Keris’ family received a much-need emergency grant from The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (PBTF). This grant allowed their mortgage to be paid while Keris continued her treatment protocol. In 2015, Keris Kares Inc. established the Princess Keris Crown Fund in Keris’ memory to pay it forward and help other Georgia families. No parent is prepared to hear their child has a brain tumor. Where and how families get information at the start of their journey matters. The PBTF has partnered with medical experts and families to develop practical tools and resources to help newly diagnosed families along the way. Keris Kares Inc. annually supports the Georgia Chapter of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (PBTF) to make an impact on Georgia families.

The Film Fix … Streaming Edition

Capsule Reviews … New Rating System - A “Fix" is recommended with a rating between 6 and 10! a “No Fix” with ratings of 1 to 5 isn’t. http://dailyfilmfix.com/ Jonathan W. Theatrical Teasers:
In Theaters:
The Promised Land (February 2) – l Fix Rating 8/10 – This was Denmark’s submission for the Best International Feature Film at this year’s Oscars, and it made the shortlist but failed to garner a nomination. It was a strong year for international films, and “The Promised Land” is a very good movie. In this period-set historical drama, Mads Mikkelsen played Ludvig Kahlen, a soldier who returns from the field of battle in hopes of becoming a farmer and gaining a title from the King. He decides to take possession of a barren piece of property that is thought incapable of sustaining crops. But the resourceful Kahlen has a secret plan and the determination to execute on it. His attempts run afoul of a local land baron, who looks down upon his lower-class status and does not want him to succeed. Naturally, things turn violent, but the foppish local ruler isn’t prepared for Kahlen’s killer instincts, formed in war. “The Promised Land” is a grueling and bloody film with a rewarding love story. Mikkelsen is terrific, as is the rest of the cast in this engaging tale. The Taste of Things (February 14) – l Fix Rating 8/10 – Many critics were shocked when France passed over “Anatomy of a Fall” and submitted “The Taste of Things” for the Best International Feature Film this year. And the critics may have been right about the Oscar submission choice, but that doesn’t mean that “The Taste of Things” isn’t worthy of recognition. This film will make you hungry. Juliette Binoche plays Eugénie, the cook for a fine gourmet named Dodin Bouffant. Much of the picture concerns their intricate ballet as Eugénie and her assistants execute and cook Dodin’s menus. The process is splendid to behold, but when Eugénie falls ill, Dodin, who loves her deeply, must cope with the possibility of losing his partner in the kitchen and in life. “The Taste of Things” is about a love affair with food and between two loyal souls.
Streaming Selects: Tiger’s Apprentice (February 2) – This animated adventure has teen Tom Lee (voice of Brandon Soo Hoo) apprenticed to Mr. Hu (voice of Henry Golding) after Tom’s grandmother dies. Tom must hone his skills to become the guardian of an ancient phoenix. This fantasy action film features an all-star cast, including Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh, Lucy Liu, Sandra Oh, and Saturday Night Live’s Bowen Yang.
Oppenheimer (February 16) – l Fix Rating 10/10 – After dominating the Oscar nominations last month, Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece finds its way to the smallish screen (readers with home theaters will be most excited). While this complex biopic of a father of the atomic bomb might not play as well at home as it did in the movie theater, watching it where you can start and stop it will allow the viewer to concentrate on the intricate narrative. After all, Nolan’s script was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, along with thirteen other nominations.
Avatar: The Last Airbender (season 1 premiere, February 22) – Not to be confused with James Cameron’s 3D blockbuster franchise, this is a live-action adaptation of the beloved animated series that ran from 2005 through 2008 and was created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. Netflix appears to have pulled out all the stops and spared no expense in crafting this story of Airbender Aang (Gordon Cormier) and his companions who try to figure out a way to defeat the Fire-Nation.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith (season 1, February 2) – l Fix Rating 7/10 – Are you a “Smith?” Maybe you know a charming “Smith” couple. In Amazon Prime’s dramatic action series “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” Donald Glover and Maye Erskine play John and Jane Smith, spies in training who are matched by a mysterious organization. After a cryptic job interview, they are given a spacious brownstone in the city outfitted with all manner of toys and spy gear. Together they must navigate the perils of the espionage life while figuring out how to reconcile their arranged union. This reboot of the 2005 film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie leans into the emotional toll that the spy life can have on a participant and a marriage.
The Marvels (February 7) – l Fix Rating 7/10 – While this MCU entry failed to meet box office expectations when it was released last November, I think many readers should check it out on the Disney Plus streaming platform. I found the comic goofiness of it to be charming. The team-up story brings together three heroines--Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani). The chemistry between the three leads is excellent, and the film benefits from the wacky Flerken, cat-like creatures that are this team’s secret weapon.
Constellation (season 1, February 21) – This eight-part science fiction series stars Noomi Rapace and “Better Call Saul’s” Jonathan Banks. Rapace plays an astronaut named Jo, who returns to Earth after surviving a disaster in space. But the Earth she remembers is much different than the one she now occupies. Like Apple’s hit “For All Mankind,” “Constellation” continues the platform’s substantial investment in fascinating science fiction stories.
Argylle (February 2) – Director Matthew Vaughn (see the “Kingsman” franchise) dives into another spy tale with “Argylle,” the story of an introverted novelist who is pulled into the wrong-doings of an underground syndicate. Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, and others make up the attractive ensemble. Restore Point (February 8) – Based on the trailers, this science fiction crime tale looks incredible. The story takes place in central Europe in the year 2041. A detective named Em (Andrea Mohylová) investigates the murder of a couple. She’s assisted by something referred to as the restoration team, who can bring one of the murdered back to life. The visuals look sumptuous and reminiscent somewhat of “Blade Runner.” Lisa Frankenstein (February 9) – Oscar-winning writer Diablo Cody (see 2008’s “Juno”) pens what’s been colorfully dubbed a “coming of RAGE story.” When the teenage crush of Lisa (Kathryn Newton) dies and is then fantastically brought back to life, the two seek love and happiness while leaving a trail of comic death and satirical destruction in their wake. Suncoast (February 9) – This drama was originally to debut on Hulu, but it’s getting a small theatrical push. “Suncoast” is a semi-autobiographical story of a teen girl dealing with the grave illness of her brother while also trying to have a regular high school life—Nico Parker stars along with Laura Linney and Woody Harrelson. Bob Marley: One Love (February 14) – Kingsley Ben-Adir (see “One Night in Miami…”) stars as the legendary reggae artist Bob Marley in this glimpse at a pivotal time in his life. Trailers tease an immersive and handsomely shot film that captures the turmoil of the time and the music that helped to define the conflicts and protests. Madam Web (February 14) – Apart from the MCU, Sony’s Marvel projects have been responsible for the likes of the “Spider-Man” and “Venom” films, and “Madam Web” is an attempt to expand its footprint with another comic book adaptation from the same collection of minor characters. Dakota Johnson stars as Cassandra Webb, a New York City EMT who develops clairvoyance. This new power forces her to protect three young women from a superpowered villain who seeks to kill them. Drive-Away Dolls (February 23) – Director Ethan Coen, one half of the Oscar-winning brother duo the Coen Brothers, goes it alone in bringing this comedy thriller to the screen. Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan play Jamie and Marian, two young women drawn into a world of crime when they take a trip to Tallahassee in hopes of a fresh start. From watching the trailers, things get wild, as the car they rent might have something valuable in the trunk. The cast is deep with talent featuring Colman Domingo, Pedro Pascal, Matt Damon, and a host of recognizable faces.

Yamaha establishes Pollinator Garden with help of Welsh Elementary students By ELLIE WHITE-STEVENS, Special to The Weekly Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Company in Newnan is committed to inspiring the love of the outdoors, sustaining the natural environment and ecosystems, and supporting local education initiatives. A recent event at the Yamaha facility grounds allowed the company to combine all these worthwhile endeavors. “The kids are going to walk away with a seed packet, a pair of gardening gloves, and a small shovel,” said Yamaha spokesman Jason Broshear. “The point is to give them a lesson that supplements what they’re learning in the classroom that they can then apply in their own backyards.”
Pictured above: Welsh Elementary students explore the concept of pollinator gardens during a visit to Yamaha, actively participating in the planting of one on the company’s campus.
Yamaha officials had wanted for some time to have their property evaluated for biodiversity purposes, so they brought in the Maine-based consulting firm Woodard and Curran. One of the recommendations received from that study was a pollinator garden. It was about the same time that Mary Thompson, a teacher at Welch known affectionately as “Coach T,” told Broshear she was looking for a community service project for her K-Kids group. It was a natural fit. “I have a great working relationship with Jason and the people at Yamaha. They’ve been very, very beneficial in helping our school,” said Thompson, referring to her previous post at Ruth Hill Elementary before coming to Welch this year. A pollinator garden is a type of garden designed to grow specific nectar- and pollen-producing plants in a way that attracts pollinating insects. As Broshear pointed out, it is an important habitat to cultivate in areas that are prone to be negatively impacted by development. “We’re planting actual plants, so they’ll get established in the fall and then by spring and early summer we’re hoping that the area will be in full bloom and then a couple years down the road it’ll probably be really mature,” he said. Raina Singleton, an ecologist for Woodard and Curran, participated in the survey of the property and later was tasked with giving the students a few minutes of basic instruction before they started getting their hands in the dirt. “I think in this age and time, a lot of people are disconnected from the outdoor environment, and we spend a lot of time on our computers and interacting through our devices,” said Singleton. “And a lot of people don’t have much experience doing things outdoors. Pollinator plantings, like any that use native or non-traditional plants, can be more intricate than one might imagine. There is more to it than just throwing out some seeds and waiting for them to grow.” But the young students were excited to get involved, which thrilled Thompson when she spoke about it during the actual planting. “They are such leaders,” she said of this year’s K-Kids group. “This is probably the most phenomenal group I’ve had of leaders and servants. Look at them digging over here. I’m just excited to see that they have a heart for service, and they are so excited to do this for our community as well as our partners at Yamaha.” Beau Stapleton, student president of K-Kids, was asked what he thought about the pollinator garden. “I think it would be inspired for other K-Kids and people to do the same too,” he said. “And it’s helping the environment. So far I’ve been working on the back one near the bush and helping others a little [with planting].” From Yamaha’s perspective, this project is just one part of an effort to get all of the company’s manufacturing sites in North America on track for carbon neutrality by 2035. That includes making equipment more energy-efficient and installing on-site solar to generate CO2-free electricity. But this garden will be something the Yamaha employees in Newnan can enjoy every day. “We’re going to put up some signage with a plaque that explains what it is and why we’re doing it,” he said. “Hopefully we will expand the plaques across the walking path just to educate and market to our employees what we’re doing to give back to the community and the environment.”
PROFESSIONALS NEEDED Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation of America is hiring new professional team members at our facility in Newnan, Georgia, due to our continued growth. We are looking for fresh faces with a broad range of expertise to expand our amazing leadership team! Direct Hire jobs in salaried positions are on our website. Full-time benefits include: • Health Insurance, Dental and Vision • 401K

It’s given me a whole lot of experience, it’s grown me a lot, not only as an engineer but as a person. And so it’s been really cool experience to get to grow up with the company, and I think that’s very valuable.” —Will L., Manufacturing Engineer
And the activity will not be lost on the elementary students. “This is where the learning happens. Hands-on learning is so important, and doing real-world extension is where it’s at,” said Thompson. “It’s not just the books, but it is talking to professionals, talking to people, having relationships, and working together and getting out there and doing it. That’s how they learn best.” Yamaha Motor Manufacturing (YMMC) employs more than 2,200 people from across metro Atlanta to design and assemble recreational vehicles at its Newnan manufacturing facilities. All of the world’s Yamaha golf cars, WaveRunners and Side-by-Sides, and most of the ATVs are manufactured at the plant in Coweta County. The 2024 Southern LitFest and Some Cozy Read Recommendations
It has been an interesting 2024 so far with freezing cold temperatures. My favorite way to warm up is to curl up under a fuzzy blanket with a cozy book. Cozy books have surged in popularity since the COVID-19 pandemic. Books that are termed cozy usually have low stakes with fun characters, often in a small town. They stay away from really serious topics and make you feel happy after reading.
books. These are lovely books about found family, quirky small-town characters and are just so full of love. This is one of my favorite series and I return to it again and again. Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree: This is a cozy fantasy story about an orc who decides she is tired of fighting and wants to live a quiet and simple life. Viv decides to open a coffee shop in a small town. This story is set in a world where the concept of coffee is very new. I loved reading about how Viv introduces coffee to this small town. This is also a tale of found family, magic and the joy of belonging. I found this book to be very sweet and heartwarming. I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith: This is another classic childhood favorite. Cassandra and her family are living in a crumbling castle. The main format of the book is Cassandra writing in her journal. So, we get a very up close and personal look into her thoughts, experiences and dreams. There are some really interesting people who surround Cassandra. This is a coming-of-age story with absolutely breath-taking writing that (no pun intended) captures your imagination. I also love books about young girls who want to be writers so this is definitely a favorite of mine (add the Betsy-Tacy books, Emily of New Moon and Pat of Silver Bush to this list). This book makes me happy every time I pick it up. Susan Crutchfield is the director of the Carnegie Library in Historic Downtown Newnan. She also is a professional photographer and enjoys volunteering with the Newnan ArtRez and the Newnan Theatre Company.
Another thing that has been helping me stay warm is the fun of planning the 2024 Southern LitFest with the Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation. This amazing event will occur June 7th & 8th and we are excited to bring some amazing authors to Newnan. We will be having some great events including an amazing Local Author Showcase and a fun kid’s program at the Newnan Theatre Company. We are also excited to welcome authors, Sally Bethea, Gwen Roland and photographer C.C. Lockwood. And together with the Newnan Cultural Arts Commission the big fundraiser of the weekend will be a special appearance from columnist, novelist, and stand-up storyteller, Sean Dietrich. Stay tuned to the Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation social media as we roll out all the exciting details in the next few weeks. Mark your calendars for this amazing weekend.

Hopefully the cold weather will be drifting away but just in case here are a few of my favorite cozy books. Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Fairies by Heather Fawcett: This is a beautiful book about faeries and the search for more information about the Fair Folk. Emily Wilde is a Cambridge professor who is writing an encyclopedia of faeries so the whole book is told in that format. I love when books weave fairy tales throughout their pages. This book is beautifully written. Anne of Green Gables series by L. M. Montgomery: This is definitely a classic book that is well known for its story of an orphan who finds a home in Avonlea. I would recommend the whole series of eight

The
CHEF …
The Chefs column highlights our local culinary masters. They share a recipe that has a lot of meaning to them and thankfully, how to make it. (Well at least most of it, sometimes secrets must remain that.) This month’s chef is …
Chef Josh Bratton with Cleaver and Cork I got a pretty late start in the restaurant industry, starting in my early thirties. But it turned out I kind of excelled at it and finally found something I loved. I wanted to learn everything I could about cooking.
❏ 1 teaspoon dry or ½ teaspoon fresh chopped Rosemary ❏ Dijon Mustard ❏ Salt/Pepper ❏ 2 eggs ❏ 2 oz. unsalted butter ❏ 1/8 cup Avocado oil
In the kitchen, I started as an expo (prep food to go out) and out of boredom started helping the prep cooks. After a little pushing and hard work, I got a line cook position where I learned the basics. I soon realized cooking for the masses with mediocre menus and dishes wasn’t where I wanted to be. So I moved on to restaurants that put creativity and quality in the hands of the chefs and that’s where the fun and passion kicked in. As I continued to learn and progress, I became the head chef of a restaurant and then moved on to one of the most successful companies in Atlanta, where one of their restaurants was awarded a Michelin Star.
•
In a pan heat the avocado oil on medium/high heat until shimmering.
•
Season beef with salt and pepper. Sear beef on all sides, ends included, for 2 minutes. Remove and chill 20 minutes. Searing all sides not only adds flavor but it helps to keep the juices from leaking out.
•
Beef Wellington is an absolute classic dish that few people are willing to take the time and effort to make. And I wanted to make it for Valentine’s Day this year. I love the fact it will take me hours to make them properly because I want to make dishes that will leave a lasting memory of an occasion like Valentine’s Day.
In a pan melt butter on medium heat, add shallots/garlic and cook 2 minutes. Add mushrooms, thyme, rosemary, pinch of salt and pepper. This is a very important step. You must cook all of this to get as much moisture out as possible. Once you think you’ve cooked it enough you probably haven’t so keep going. Once you stop seeing liquid in the bottom of the pan remove and chill at least 15 minutes. This is called a mushroom duxelles.
•
P.S. I still need a valentine this year and will be accepting applications for the position at info@ cleaverandcork.net
Next, get a sheet of plastic wrap laid over a cutting board. On this lay Prosciutto out overlapping each piece slightly. Three pieces on the bottom and three on the top. The prosciutto should essentially look like a sheet of paper that will be used to wrap the beef and mushroom duxelles in.
•
Once the prosciutto in in place take out the mushroom duxelles and make an even layer over the prosciutto leaving about 1/2” space around the edges.
•
Remove the beef and add a generous layer of Dijon Mustard over the whole piece. Lay in the center of the prosciutto/duxelles and using the plastic wrap start to fold and roll it as tight as possible. Once that is done roll in a fresh piece of plastic wrap roll and tighten as much as possible making sure the ends are rolled tightly as well. Chill for at least 30 minutes.
•
At this time add one whole egg, one egg yolk, and 2 tablespoons of water to a bowl and whisk.
•
On a cutting board lay out puff pastry. Brush edges about 1”, with some of the egg mix. Remove beef from plastic wrap and roll tightly in puff pastry. Trim excess pastry. Tuck and close up the ends. Once again, roll this tightly in plastic wrap and chill 30 minutes.
•
Preheat oven to 400f. Remove Wellington from plastic wrap and evenly brush egg wash over the whole Wellington. Place this on a foil-lined pan and cook for 35 minutes. Remove and let rest for 10 minutes. Slice into 1” slices.
Then I was contacted by Audrey of Cleaver and Cork and offered a position, which I love to this day. There’s a real romance in food for me because it brings people together and some of the best memories people have are being surrounded by the food we eat. I do miss the kitchen, but the life of a chef is not an easy one and with Cleaver and Cork I get the best of both worlds. I get to work with the finest quality products that few people have access to, interact with and educate customers all while having a quality of life.

Sharpsburg native Drew Cronic named Offensive Coordinator at the Naval Academy
From Navy Midshipmen Football Press Release Navy head football coach Brian Newberry announced last week that Drew Cronic has joined the Navy football staff as offensive coordinator. Cronic played quarterback for his father, Danny Cronic, at East Coweta High School before playing collegiately at Georgia. As a Bulldog, Cronic played wide receiver and was a member of the special teams, lettering twice and participating in the 1995 Peach Bowl and 1997 Outback Bowl. Cronic comes to Navy from Mercer, where he put together a 28-17 (.622) record over the last four years, including a 22-10 (.688) mark in the rugged Southern Conference. "I couldn't be more excited to welcome Drew and his family to Navy," said Newberry. "Coach Cronic is an outstanding person and one of the most well respected, creative and innovative coaches in the business. He's had great success as an offensive coordinator and as a head coach everywhere he's been. He cares deeply about his players and has had a significant impact on the lives of the young men he's coached. I am thrilled to have him on our staff and to lead our offensive unit." "It's an honor and a privilege to join Coach Newberry's staff at the premier Service Academy in the country," said Cronic. "My family and I are excited about the opportunity to work with the future leaders of our country and the great coaching staff that Coach Newberry has assembled. I am looking forward to the challenge of winning the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy and competing for the American Athletic Conference Championship." A native of Sharpsburg, Georgia, Cronic is considered one of the more innovative offensive minds across all levels of college football. Driven by the motto "Raise the Bar," Cronic has been a head coach for a combined eight years at three different schools and has compiled a career record of 75-23 (.765) while also handling offensive coordinator duties that featured variations of the option offense. Cronic and his wife, Amelia, have three sons, Noah, Elijah and Isaiah.
