Mr. Personality Newnan’s Goodwill Ambassador January: The highlights for this month are New Year’s Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Martin Luther King Jr. was indeed creating history during my childhood. I look back now and see a much different time, attitude, and people as history sweeps on us as if a raging river from yesterday to tomorrow and beyond. Changes are slowly coming to the Courthouse Square, and details about the changes are even slower! I am sorry to hear that we are losing “Junk Starlet.” I can hardly wait to see what’s

next at that location. Be sure to stop by “One Eleven” on 7 Jackson Street and admire the many changes and additions, as there are now beautiful flower arrangements created by two talented young ladies. Their shop is titled “La Fleur de Soul” and is located right inside One Eleven. Tell em Mr. Personality sent you! This is my second essay of “The Positive Effects of Death.” There are indeed many benefits from embracing one’s death. To my mind, death puts all of life in proper perspective, a sort of stopwatch to ensure that we make the most of our time we have. This is an excellent opportunity to practice “forgiveness,” “compassion,” and to simply do good for the sake of doing good. We have a short time to leave our footprint on and in the world, be it good or evil. I am delighted that I have been given the opportunity to use my coming death to better living for a higher purpose. Spreading Joy and Goodwill everywhere I go is now my God-given purpose. This day is a day to embrace the hearts, minds, and spirits of others. To create goodwill that will travel throughout the entire universe. Do not ignore your own expiration date, use it to add quality and purpose to your life. My Book of the Month is titled “Books That Changed the World” by Andrew Taylor. These are the 50 most influential books in human history. Starting with the Iliad, The Analects, and the Republic, to Moby Dick and Uncle Tom’s Cabin, and ending with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The book represents old school thoughts and history being made one page at a time. They were often “fresh new ideas” at the time they were being written. Each chapter about each book has its own history and timeline. These are the many books that influenced our world from the past, to this very present, and unto forever. I recommend this book for reading and for keeping the history of the 50 most influential books ever in human history- a gift to hand down. Until next time, Peace, Love, and Joy ~ Mr.Personality

I awoke on the last day of 2023 around 1 p.m. I know this because it was much brighter than usual and squinting at my watch showed it to be 12:57 p.m exactly. So, close enough. I have never slept in that much since … forever. At least I was in my own bed, where I had spent pretty much every day since Dec. 28. That included Dec. 29, which was my birthday for those wanting to send belated cash and well-wishes, or at least make a note for next year. I had, for lack of a better term, that “thing” you would not wish on your worst enemy, as the saying goes. Flu, respiratory whatever, who knows but I had it. And I would not wish it on my worst enemy, I hope I don’t have a worst enemy, but there are some people up in Washington, D.C. who I think might need to just go home and rest for a while. My inability to do much more than breathe, and that at a much lower level than normal, gave me time to think. Interesting things can happen when you give a writer time to think. And so with a new year …

Back to those in Washington, D.C. I am beyond tired of any politician saying they are speaking for the American people, or what the American people want is (fill in the blank). I am tired of Democrats and Republicans blaming the other side for, well, everything.
Office Hours: Mon., Wed., Thurs., Fri. 9 - 4.
There is a hatred that I find demoralizing, shameful and of no use to running this great country. Grow up and work things out regardless of what political label you wear.

Enough on politics. I hope we learn to say “no” when, well, we really don’t want to do something, we have no intentions of doing whatever is at issue, and we won’t show up anyway. There is nothing wrong with saying you don’t want to do something. You are not required to give a reason. I wasted too much time in 2023 because people just wouldn’t say “not interested, no thanks, not at this time …” The concept of setting up a meeting with someone - for whatever reason - and then they just don’t show up is a concept I just don’t understand. And then being ghosted when you follow up to make sure they are okay takes the prize of, well, just being rude. I just don’t get it. I do know, however, my 2024 goal is to be more intentional. That my “yes” is a “yes,” and my “no,” is simply that. Tied to that, I want to stop worrying about all the “small stuff.” Baring a life-threatening experience, a lot of what we face in this country is small stuff compared to what is going on in the Middle East or the Ukraine. I want to prioritize and focus on separating “urgent,” “immediate,” or “someday,” and/or is this a simple “no?” Growing up, my three brothers and I would always ask our dad what he wanted for Christmas or his birthday. His answer was always the same … “Peace … just peace.” On behalf of everyone here at Winters Media, we wish you peace and the freedom to say “no.”

And in another retirement, from the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office: Today was a bittersweet day. Today was the last day Chief Deputy Yarbrough reported to work before his official retirement date later this month. For more than 40 years, Chief Deputy James Yarbrough has remained dedicated to the pursuit of justice in Coweta County. Jimmy began his career in law enforcement with the Newnan Police Department before coming to the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office in 1994. But not before he successfully completed a four-month training stint at the FBI headquarters in Quantico, Virginia. Chief Deputy Yarbrough has been the Investigations Division Director since he came to work with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office. He has instilled a commitment of serving in our agency and serves as a mentor to many. The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office is better by having Jimmy Yarbrough be a part of it for so many years. But much more importantly, the Coweta County community is better off by having Chief Deputy Yarbrough dedicated over 40 years of his life to it, and to our citizens.

Real Estate Es tate
2024 Real Estate Forescast
If you have been keeping up with the news, you may have heard the forecast from many economy experts stating they expect interest and mortgage rates to decline in 2024. This is great news for our local real estate market. After a slower September and October, I have seen an unusually busy holiday season in real estate. The listing inventory has been steady for this time of year. I have also seen an influx of buyers jump back into the market. This is very unusual for this time of year and a great indicator for 2024. The real estate market typically follows mortgage rates which follow interest rates. If you have read my previous articles, I have covered this correlation before. I recently wrote an offer on a home for a buyer whose mortgage rate was 6.3%. This is a great improvement from when rates were above seven percent and closer to eight percent late this past summer and earlier in the fall. Several industry experts have forecasted rates
to decrease closer to five percent in 2024. This would cause buyers, who have been waiting for the rates to improve, to jump back in the real estate market, thus creating more demand and driving prices up.
Scott Gordon
Increased buyer demand is a double-edged sword, however. If rates drop too quickly and demand increases too swiftly then you can see home prices shoot up very quickly also. If prices are too high and the supply of listings does not increase with the buyer demand, we could have a huge problem with buyers not being able to afford a decent home. There is still a housing crisis in our country, particularly for lower income and hourly workers.
Custom Painting
An important factor for 2024 will be the speed and frequency at which the Federal Reserve drops interest rates. The Fed will need to be sensitive to this as not to create another housing bubble. Since I am writing this around Christmas, there is a very famous book that preaches the importance of moderation. I hope the Federal Reserve, along with banks, will remember moderation in 2024. Happy Holidays to all! Jess Barron is an Associate Broker with Lindseys, Inc. Realtors and former President of the Newnan-Coweta Board of Realtors. ■

Why Lung Cancer Screenings Save Lives Known as the silent killer due to its lack of symptoms in early stages, lung cancer is the second most common type of cancer, and statistically the most fatal. The American Cancer Society estimates a total of 238,340 newly diagnosed cases in 2023, making it all the more crucial that those at risk receive screening as soon as possible. “The most effective way to fight lung cancer is to begin treatment early on,” says William Courson, D.O., who specializes in family medicine, at Piedmont Physicians at Premier Medical in Newnan. “But we can’t do so if you aren’t aware you even have it. Following the guidelines, getting screened if you’re at risk—it’s all about staying on top of your health.” William Courson, D.O.,
Who is Eligible for a Lung Cancer Screening? To qualify: • Age 50-77 • Smoking history of 20 pack years (one pack a day for 20 years or two packs a day for 10 years) • Current smoker or stopped in the last 15 years or less • No current pulmonary symptoms, such as worsening cough, coughing up blood, or shortness of breath • No unexplained weight loss So, how does it work? The screening process itself is a straightforward CT scan—no injections or medications are involved. The screening-eligible patient will simply lie still on the table that will slide them through the doughnutshaped scanner, taking only 20 seconds to complete. Afterward, your physician will then receive your results and follow up with you via phone call to discuss next steps. In the event that your CT scan comes back with normal results (hooray!), our recommendation is for you to continue annual CT scans so that we can monitor any developments, or ensure you’re actually in the clear. Your nurse navigator will guide you through the entire process and remind you when it is time for your next screening or for additional tests. *Please note that 30 to 40 percent of lung cancer CT scans show abnormal results. Most of these results will be noncancerous (benign) but abnormal scans require close follow-up and further testing. If you think you may be at risk for lung cancer, contact with your primary care physician to see if you meet the eligibility criteria for a low-dose CT (LDCT) screening exam.

Born from the shared passion of its founding members brothers Matt and Colin Duncan, the Duncan Brothers Band is a force to be reckoned with in the realm of country and rock. Matt’s lead vocals and rhythm guitar set the stage, while Colin’s finesse on drums keeps the heartbeat of their music alive joined by the virtuoso Jimmy Canepa on lead guitar, and the solid foundation led by Brad Stiles on bass -this quartet from diverse backgrounds converges to create a sound that’s both timeless and contemporary. From classic country ballads to electrifying rock anthems, the Duncan Brothers band invites you to ride the waves of their musical journey where brotherhood and harmonies blend seamlessly in every note.

Get Mattie McKoy Rolling!
Katie’s
Meet local 15 year-old Mattie McKoy. He loves video games and his dog Odin. He has an older brother and sister. And he is living with mitochondrial disease and neurofibromatosis type one. Mattie has multiple spinal cord tumors, which are slowly taking away his ability to walk, breathe, and function. He is wheelchair dependent. While he continues on oral chemotherapy, the family was recently informed that there are no further treatment options available. The focus is now on giving Mattie the best quality of life possible. After his mother Katie was given the difficult news that there were no other options to help her son, she drove to Starbucks to console herself. On the drive, she had the idea that they needed a wheelchair van to make the most of their time. So she dried her tears and got on Facebook for ideas on how to find one. Facebook came through, by way of a friend whose son had similar limitations as Mattie. Their son had recently had “a miracle” and surgery had worked for him. They had a wheelchair van they no longer needed and would sell to the McKoys at a low cost. A deal was reached and the McKoys only had to pay a down payment right away. The van has been a blessing. Recently, the family was able to go Christmas shopping together for the first time in four years. Mattie loves to take Odin to Starbucks for a pup cup; the workers love to see them when they visit. The rest of the van payment is due in several months. In order to help pay for the van, the family has started a fundraiser on SupportNow.org. During this season of giving, please consider helping out the McKoy family with a donation to their wheelchair van. Visit SupportNow.org or visit this link to get Mattie McKoy rolling: https://www.supportnow.org/get-mattie-mckoy-rolling Katie McKoy said this experience with Mattie has taught her so many things and pushed her to grow in ways she’d never imagined. She has been inspired to work to become a respiratory therapist, so that she can give back to others in the same way that so many have given to her family. She hopes to help other families in their situation, and to show them that they aren’t alone, and they are going to be okay.
“I just want to put the message out there to be the light. There is so much darkness in the world. We need more light. We need to help others; if it’s not Mattie, please be a help to someone.” Katie McCoy
More on Mitochondrial Disease from CDC.gov
• Mitochondria are tiny parts of almost every cell in your body. They turn sugar and oxygen into energy that the cells need to work. • In mitochondrial diseases, the mitochondria cannot efficiently turn sugar and oxygen into energy, so the cells do not work correctly. • There are many types of mitochondrial disease, and they can affect different parts of the body: the brain, kidneys, muscles, heart, eyes, ears, and others. More on Neurofibromatosis Type One from cancer.gov
• The hallmark of NF1 is the development of neurofibromas, which are tumors that develop from the cells and tissues that cover nerves. • People with NF1 are also known to have a higher risk of cancerous tumors. • Because NF1 itself is relatively rare, researchers have struggled to assemble a comprehensive picture of these cancer risks.

A Gift … The Christmas season has past and children everywhere were looking to get that coveted gift, the one they have dreamed about the whole year. Parents frantically fought the manic masses in hopes of finding “it,” the gift that made this Christmas perfect. And, I am all for the perfect gift for your little or bigger bundle of joy. But, if you are interested in something that will be around probably longer than Grandma’s fruit cake, please allow me to recommend a gift. I recently was looking at pictures of past graduations for our “1,000 Books before Kindergarten ‘’ program. This is an inspiring, FREE program we offer at all libraries where young children can read (with aid of family, teachers, etc.) books with the hope of being recognized and rewarded at one of our fantastic graduation parties (there are gifts!). I have seen some wonderful sights in my life but one of my favorites is seeing a roomful of children with graduation caps sitting with their families as we announce their name. The light from all the smiles in the room is truly dazzling and warm.
with your child or whatever you would like to read. And after all, isn’t Christmas also the season of Peace? Do something for those you care about… give them the gift of literacy and the gift of peace. I guarantee it will get you on the good list!

Besides a cute photo op, there is one thing that really makes me excited about the gift I am about to tell you about. If you have children or grandchildren, all of them can take advantage of “1000 Books.” But it is not a requirement to get the real gift nor do you have to be a child to get it … it is free to all. It is the gift of literacy, with a shelf life that runs as long as you do and there is no cap on how much you want of it. Look… I can cite statistic after statistic about children and the positive effects of reading (better school scores, higher college acceptance, stronger in science and math) but for children it is fun! It is also a family event, a parent or sibling or grandparent can join in the excitement of seeing the sparkle in the eye of a happy reader. As for adults who claim that they do not read, find something they are interested in and gift them a book about it. It can even be an audio book. There is also a place called the library where these books, audios, eBooks, etc. are available for all and they are FREE. How many times do you read an article about Christmas gifts and the word FREE is mentioned twice (now thrice)??? We are overloaded with information these days and it seems to me that nobody can sit still for longer than 10 minutes. Is it Facebook or Meta or X or Politics? I do not know but I can tell you that there is something very peaceful about relaxing with a good mystery, biography, historical novel, children’s book
Did You Know? • 61% of low-income families do not have a single piece of ageappropriate reading material in their home?

The Film Fix … Streaming Edition
with Jonathan W. Hickman
Capsule Reviews … New Rating System - A “Fix" is recommended with a rating between 6 and 10! a “No Fix” with ratings of 1 to 5 isn’t. http://dailyfilmfix.com/ Jonathan W. Hickman is an entertainment attorney, filmmaker, college professor, and novelist. More about Jonathan can be found by visiting http://filmproductionlaw.com/
In Theaters:
Ferrari (in theaters now) – l Fix Rating 6/10 – “Ferrari” is director Michael Mann’s passion project. Unfortunately, this biopic about Enzo Ferrari is a dull telling of events in the summer of 1957 when the Ferrari empire was in jeopardy. Adam Driver plays the middle-aged Italian automobile entrepreneur in the movie, focusing on Ferrari’s precarious relationship with his wife Laura (Penélope Cruz), his mistress Lina Lardi (Shailene Woodley), and his racing and high-end sports car manufacturing business. Some viewers have complained about the distracting computergenerated effects related to the showy automobile crashes, but I found them shocking and exciting. On the other hand, the drama and industrial intrigue came off as limp and unengaging. Performances are uneven, as Driver does his level best to look stern and maintain character with a sometimes-shifting Italian accent. Cruz gets the juiciest role and does the finest work in the film, while Woodley is miscast and never finds her character’s center. This production is solid, but the story fails to resonate. The Iron Claw (in theaters now) – l NO Fix Rating 5/10 – Some wrestling fans have found “The Iron Claw” emotionally engaging. But this abridged telling of the cursed Von Erich family didn’t work for me. The story concerns three of the Von Erich brothers who became professional wrestlers in the 1980s. While the outcomes of their matches are all predetermined, the action in the ring is the product of careful training and athletic prowess. The Von Erich patriarch Fritz (a very good Holt McCallany) was once a star in the ring before moving on to wrestling management. He’s devoted to making his beefy boys into stars, regardless of their desire to wrestle. A more muscled-up than usual Zac Efron plays eldest brother Kevin, who is initially tapped for greatness. But despite having the brawn, Kevin gets tongue-tied when called to the camera. And when younger brother David (Harris Dickinson) demonstrates the necessary television charisma, Dad moves him up in the ranks to be joined by another brother and former Olympic hopeful Kerry (“The Bear’s” Jeremy Allen White). The three men make a fierce and competitive presence, gaining notice from other leagues, who are always clamoring for talent. But the pressures to perform exact a horrible price, and the curse of the Von Erich family is their legacy instead of their achievements on the mat. Writer/director Sean Durkin’s dour handling of a notable, highprofile American tragedy fails to break through, even though performances (especially from a devoted Efron) are strong and the wrestling is sometimes exciting.
the origins of Don and Gal and their disturbing relationship with twisted criminal Teddy Bass.
Theatrical Teasers:
Ted (season 1, January 11) – Another popular film gets a prequel series on a streamer as director Seth MacFarlane returns to his hit 2012 furry prankster Ted. Taking place in 1993, teenager John Bennett (Max Burkholder taking over the role originally played by Mark Wahlberg) and his best pal Ted (a living teddy bear voiced by MacFarlane) navigate the perils of high school. With the wisecracking Ted by his side, nothing could go wrong for the hapless John, right?
Night Swim (January 5) – The Cinderella origin story for this latest Blumhouse production started with a low-budget short film released on YouTube in 2014. Writer/director Bryce McGuire’s gamble in putting the five-minute movie out there for free paid off handsomely and resulted in James Wan and Judson Scott of Atomic Monster buying the rights. The short was terrific, but it worked mainly due to its brevity. In the short, a girl plays Marco Polo in a darkened pool only to get much more than she bargained for. The feature version appears to explore our relationship with the pool lifestyle and the cement pond’s real and imagined perils. This creepy-looking horror thriller stars Kurt Russell’s son Wyatt (see “Monarch”) and Oscar nominee Kerry Condon (see “The Banshees of Inisherin”).
Society of the Snow (January 5) – l Fix Rating 7/10 – Director J.A. Bayona (see “The Impossible” and “The Orphanage”) explores the story of a rugby team that crashes in the Andes. Based on the actual events that took place in 1972, this tale of survival in a place inhospitable to human life is harrowing. “Society of the Snow” is Spain’s submission for the Best International Feature at this year’s Academy Awards.
Expats (season 1, January 26) – Nicole Kidman leads this sixepisode series based on the 2016 novel “The Expatriates” by Janice Y. K. Lee. In the show, Kidman plays the affluent Margaret, living with her husband (Brian Tee) and child in Hong Kong. The story involves the intertwining relationship of three women and a tragic event in their lives. The series is directed by Lulu Wang (see 2019’s “The Farewell”).
And part of that had to do with the rich characterizations that made up the gangster tale of Don Logan’s visit to retired safecracker Gal Dove. That film is highlighted by a ferocious performance by Ben Kingsley as the foul-mouthed Don. This prequel series traces
I.S.S. (January 19) – Oscar winner Ariana DeBose (see “West Side Story”) rests her singing voice to join Chris Messina (see “The Mindy Project”) in this science fiction actioner. The story has a diverse group of astronauts living peacefully on the International Space Station. Harmony is threatened when war breaks out on Earth. With the story last year about lost tomatoes on the Space Station making big news, this thriller set on the I.S.S. might interest more than just sci-fi fans. _______________________________
Echo (season 1, January 9) – As the waning influence of the Marvel machine was seen on full display in 2023, going smaller and more ground-level with a show like “Echo” might be a good idea. This limited series has Alaqua Cox again playing the title character introduced in “Hawkeye.” Also returning is Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, aka The Kingpin of Crime. Trailers tease a brutal and bloody tale with Fisk flexing his muscle while recruiting Maya Lopez, aka Echo, to be his enforcer. This production occurred in Peachtree City, Grantville, and the metro Atlanta area and is part of the MCU’s “Marvel Spotlight” banner.
Streaming Selects: Sexy Beast (season 1, January 25) – Director Jonathan Glazer burst onto the scene in 2000 with his first feature film, “Sexy Beast.” He’s since moved on to more upmarket fare, with his Holocaust film “The Zone of Interest” looking to capture awards notice if not a golden statute this year, “Beast” remains his most entertaining and accessible work.
Mean Girls (January 12) – This comedy is based on the 2004 film and the Broadway musical. Tina Fey is credited with the screenplay, and Jeff Richmond and Nell Benjamin lend new versions of the music from the stage production. Fey and Tim Meadows return to their roles from the original film. Angourie Rice (see “The Nice Guys”) steps into the lead of Cady Heron, a role once inhabited by Lindsay Lohan in 2004. The trailers reveal irreverent and potentially over-the-top humor from an attractive and game ensemble cast. Hidden somewhat in the promotions are the song and dance numbers that should help to distinguish this film from remake obscurity.
Masters of the Air (January 26) – Executive producers Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg continue their vivid exploration of WWII that previously gave us “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” This time, we follow the heroic exploits of the 100th Bomb Group. The series stars Austin Butler, who broke out in 2022 as the King of Rock and Roll in “Elvis,” he’s joined by fellow Oscar nominee and “Saltburn” star Barry Keoghan. _______________________________
