Coweta Libraries: Hotter than July

The year was 1980 when Stevie Wonder released the album “Hotter than July”.” His previous album had disappointed critically and commercially but “Hotter” received rave reviews while burning up the Billboard charts.

entertained by these accomplished performers.

Finale Friday … Finally, we will tie the summer programming up in a big red bow with our Finale Friday party at the Central Soccer Fields on July 22, 2022. Beginning at 5 p.m. the finale will feature performers, music, food, sweets, crafts, and our own Coweta Recreation Department will be there with their own fun games and challenges. Families are welcome to bring picnic baskets and blankets if they like in addition to partaking of food offerings from Chick-fil-A and FRIOS Gourmet Pops. There will be cool door prizes including one from the Georgia Aquarium. Reading and Recreation…. It just does not get better! As Stevie himself would say, July is going to be a Master Blaster!! We hope to see you lots in July! Jimmy Bass is director of the Coweta Public Library System. He also plays a mean guitar and sings at local venues.n

2022 Summer Reading program … Due to a little thing called COVID, I feel like our last two summers have been a touch disappointing, but it is 2022 and our libraries are once again scorching a path to sweet summer success. It is not too late to sign up for our Summer Reading program; we are still welcoming readers and giving out prizes. We have spent more on supplies and prizes than planned which makes me happy - money well spent!

125+ programs in July … So, we now move on to July and boy, can it be hotter in every sense of the word? The show will go on at all libraries as we offer over 125 programs in July alone while bringing in the most professional library entertainers working today. Please allow me to give you some examples. Our staff-created and led programs include t-shirt making, Escape rooms, STEM and STEAM crafts, Abstract Graphic Art, Legos, Gaming and Trivia, Comic Challenge, and so much more! Go to our website at www.cowetapubliclibrary.org for all events to see dates and times.

Also, we welcome the always eruptive Dr. Donald White’s Mad Science Show and we close the month with award winning magician and sleight of hand artist, Arthur Atsma. I promise you will be impressed and

“Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope.” – Kofi Annan The Coweta County Ferst Foundation mission is to provide a free monthly age-appropriate book for every child under the age of five in Coweta County. Visit our website for more information: cowetaferst.org

Did You Know? • 61% of low-income families do not have a single piece of age-appropriate reading material in their home? • 1/3rd of Georgia’s children start school unprepared to learn? • 75% of Georgia’s students who are poor readers in the third grade will remain poor readers in high school?

How Do Books Help? The more words a child hears, the larger the child’s vocabulary and the larger the child’s vocabulary, the more likely the child will be a proficient reader. However, in order to read with a child, books must be in the home. Coweta Ferst Foundation, P.O. PAPER | July 2022 | www.wintersmedia.net _____________________________________________________________________________________

Notes from Jackson Street “I Gotta Go” seems to be what I hear a lot of lately.

“I Gotta Go” can be painful words to hear. Sometimes they can be cute, like the time I said, “I gotta go” take a spin on a four-wheeler!

“I Gotta Go” can mean different things depending on the circumstances. And it definitely means different things at different ages of one’s life. For Winters and me the progression of the phrase “I Gotta Go” has been a little bit like this ...

At two years of age, when the SONS would say “I gotta go,” that meant “I gotta pee and I gotta pee now.” Needless to say, Winters and I were quick to respond to that “I gotta go..”

When they were 10, the SONS would likely roll their eyes and say with a perturbed tone, “I gotta go” as they jumped out of the car. Clearly, I was holding them up, holding them back or holding up traffic. Then they would quickly dash off and I would just shake my head in disbelief.

In their teen years, the SONS said things like “Mom, I gotta go! I gotta go because I am playing my video game and I will die because I can’t pause. I have gotta go get back to the virtual world and fast.” Now, one has “gotta go” command his tank platoon in the U.S. Army; the middle has “gotta go” to work; the third has “gotta go” see his girlfriend.

It is painful realizing your sweet little boys are becoming men and your heart tightens when they say, “Mom, I gotta go, (fill in the blank)”

The fact is sometimes we “gotta go” because we simply have to. Sometimes we want to. Sometimes we must. Sometimes we need to. The reality is that daughters become women, sons turn into men, parents age and pass away. Sometimes friends are there for us and sometimes they are not. Sometimes spouses say “I am done … I gotta go.”

Sometimes we are blessed with the easy decisions of life, like I gotta go to the grocery store, I gotta go get one eye contact not two. I gotta go for a walk, I gotta clean my house, I gotta go kiss my SONS good night and Winters too. Life is so short my dear friends, and sadly we often waste precious energy and time on insignificant and unimportant things. But as long as we have breath to breathe we have the opportunity to make sure we make the most out of the moments we have with the ones we love.

We can focus on the significant things of life, because before we know it, in the blink of an eye, those we love will say “I gotta go.”

The

Journey

died. That’s the only way I can describe it. I cried and cried … cried myself to sleep, cried in the car, cried in the shower – it was horrible.

Happy Summer, Paper readers! By the time you read this, the season will only be a few weeks in but we’ll feel like it’s almost over as we have a couple of weeks before the grind of school and community events rev up again. This year is halfway complete and it feels like it just began. We are dealing with a lot these days and things just seem to pile on top of each other.

And friends – normally if I cry it means I’m over-the-top mad and the room should probably clear out if it isn’t already because Samantha starts talking about herself in the third person and it isn’t a pretty picture. So, this sort of grief was unique to me. I felt silly about it, so I was really good about shaming myself and telling myself that there were plenty of parents that didn’t get to see their kids grow up with the amount of happiness my daughter had inside of her and I should just stop it and be happy. But – I am here to tell you that you should not feel bad about how you feel. The only way we truly understand is to feel it all the way through and reflect once we’ve gotten on the other side.

Every May I have friends with kids graduating high school and/ or many move out for their next stage of school and further adventures. As I watch the stages of pride, anxiety, sadness and ultimately resilience we go through as parents, it brings me back to when my oldest daughter moved out and the feeling of overwhelming grief I had. Seriously – how dramatic – it was like she

This year, my baby boy is ready to move away. He wants to work in the trades (which I fully support) and has a plan which we have discussed in depth. He is quite the impressive young man in many ways – but relating to this area, how much thought he has put into the many details required to get out on your own has impressed me.

with Samantha Brazie

As the discussions have ramped up over the last month, I find myself trying to suppress my feelings again. I keep reminding myself of how when he was a little boy he would tell me how much he loved me, but asked me if I would be ok when he moves out because he wanted to travel and be independent. His heart and soul knew what it wanted long ago. Gosh it’s been heart wrenching for me. I just don’t want to let him go. But I know that I need to support him, be positive and open so he knows that I will always be here to celebrate his wins and losses and that he will know that he can come to me every day of his life for anything he wants to. And I need to feel it. Deep, deep down … no matter how much it hurts. So parents, if you are going through something similar – know you’re not alone. It’s ok to be happy and sad. Just no matter what – keep moving forward and make sure your babies know you are there for them, unconditionally. Because you will be, whether you agree with the direction they’re going with in life or not. They – and you – are just starting a new chapter in their Journey. “If something makes you sad at the end, it must’ve been pretty wonderful when it was happening.” – William, This Is Us. Questions? CHEF

The

The Chefs column highlights our local culinary masters. They share a recipe that has a lot of meaning to them and thankfully, how to make it. (Well at least most of it, sometimes secrets must remain that.) This month’s chef is …

Josh Bratton Born in Epsom, England, I was kind of destined to be in the food industry. My family at the time lived in England because my father was head of quality for KFC in Great Britain. He now owns a food safety consulting business. My mother was and still is the owner of a successful small business and my older brother worked on Broadway for several years in New York and now the corporate side of Universal.

Everyone has their “go-to” place to eat. It might be with linen tablecloths and waiters in ties, or where you throw peanuts on the floor and carve your initials in the wooden tables. Whatever and wherever, it’s your “joint.” There are lots of these places around here, and we’re out to find them all in The Joints column. And yes, all are White Monkey approved. Look for an extensive list of our joints on our website …

Alo Farms … 678.489.4423 • 629 Hwy 74 South, Peachtree City Red and Green Oakleaf, Sweet Crisp, Red and Green Butter and Muir Lettuce. Microgreen broccoli, basil, cucumbers, spinach, scallion and more. alofarmsga.us

We have our roots in Kentucky so we’re good ol southern cooking people but not afraid to explore. I suppose I’m the most adventurous of the family when it comes to different/odd foods. Although I’m a certified commercial pilot I went a different path. I moved to Georgia in 2014 and got a job as a serving assistant. I figured out I had more fun in the kitchen rather than out front helping serve. After a little begging and maybe a bit of forcing, I got a chance to cook. Somehow, some way, I was able to hold my own with no professional training. That’s how it started. So I became a sponge for cooking knowledge. After two or three years I got a call wanting to know if I wanted to help open a restaurant at a line cook level. It was more elevated cooking working under a well established chef. I jumped at the chance. Over the course of a couple of years I worked my way from line cook to sous chef to head chef and eventually partner of the restaurant. In 2020 I decided to take a shot with the big boys in Atlanta. I ended up with one of the most known and respected restaurant groups, Castellucci Hospitality. Learning new food cultures and continuing to grow as a chef I had no intention of leaving, but I got a call from Chad and Audrey that led to a lovely offer to work with high end food, but also have a much better quality of life. Being a chef isn’t an easy life. And what it comes down to is the quality of ingredients and products that I enjoy the most as a chef. Work with good quality products and enhance them. The best seasoning for A5 Japanese Wagyu … just a pinch of salt. Nothing more. Let the products shine. That’s the beauty of what we sell at Cleaver and Cork. Simple, clean and beautifully delicious.

CNC’s Founder’s Dinner Aug. 29 By Can’t Never Could, Inc. The local nonprofit Can’t Never Could is observing August as Founder’s Month and will hold its annual Founder’s Dinner on August 29, 2022, at the Newnan Centre. This year’s speaker is Steve Stirling, president and CEO of MAP International, a Christian organization providing medicines and health supplies to those in need around the world so they might experience life to the fullest. Stirling was scheduled to speak at last year’s dinner but experienced some health issues, and Can’t Never Could board members said they are grateful he is now able to visit Newnan for the dinner.

Steve Stirling of MAP International

“This is the largest fundraiser we have on a yearly basis, and we have not been able to gather with everyone for some time now,” said CNC Board Chair Kevin Daniell. “We look forward to having this event on the day that would have been Rob’s 51st birthday to celebrate with all of our friends. The needs are constant, and CNC is grateful that we have been able to help do our part and follow Philippians 4:13—I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Stirling assumed his role at MAP International in mid 2014 after holding leadership positions in major corporations and nonprofit organizations including ChildFund International, Heifer International, Univera Life Sciences, Childhelp and World Vision U.S. Stirling earned his bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics at Cornell University and his MBA in Marketing and Finance at Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management, during which time he also studied international business in Paris, France. His book, The Crutch of Success, chronicles his early years in a Korean orphanage, his adoption into a large, loving family in Alaska, his battle against polio and his determination to succeed. Steve and his wife, Sook Hee, have two grown children. The Founder’s Dinner will also mark the 51st birthday of CNC’s founder, the late Rob Estes of Newnan. On August 16, 2013, Rob was diagnosed with an incurable form of brain cancer called glioblastoma. After the removal of a five-centimeter tumor in his right frontal lobe, he lost his battle on December 17, 2017, but not without a fight. As a result of this experience, Rob’s family realized the importance of faith, community, perseverance, and hope. They also realized the importance of helping others in their times of adversity. For this reason, they founded Can’t Never Could soon after his diagnosis. Because Rob was born on August 29, 1971— and Can’t Never Could was founded in August—CNC now honors the memory of its founder each August. Can’t Never Could, Inc. is a nonprofit corporation that is dedicated to helping individuals and groups who are facing adversity and personal battles. Through monetary donations, support, and faith in Jesus Christ, CNC aims to instill determination and hope in those who are experiencing these challenges. Can’t Never Could says it makes these contributions “with the desire to glorify Christ, who provides strength in all circumstances.” The name of the organization comes from Rob’s mother, Martha Ann Parks. When Rob was a child and would tell her he couldn’t do something, she would often reply, “Can’t never could.” Tickets for the Founder’s Dinner are $85 each or $135 per couple. The

Interview

with Dennis McEntire

You are going on an extended solo trip. What three albums and three books would you take? Albums: Stardust by Willie Nelson, Glen Campbell’s Greatest Hits, and Brian Reagan – I Walked on the Moon. Books: The Bible, Rising Tide by John M. Barry. Tell us one thing about yourself that few people know. I graduated dead last in my college class. Or was it high school? Or maybe both. But I was student body president in both college and high school. You are hosting a dinner party for six. What five people, living or dead, would you invite and why?

Briefly describe yourself and what you do/did.

George Washington because he was a great leader. Robert E. Lee, Martin Luther King Jr., Frederick Douglass, John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, and Antonin Scalia. I would love to hear them discuss their lives and thoughts on how our country has evolved. (I know this is two more than you asked for, but you know not all of them will be able to come.)

I’m a fun-loving person who rarely takes himself seriously.

Name an as yet unfulfilled dream.

I managed Newnan Utilities, a municipal service organization responsible for providing water, wastewater, and power to businesses and residents of the city of Newnan.

Dogs or cats? I like both but if I had to pick I would pick dogs. Your favorite quote and why. “There is no limit to what can be accomplished if you don’t care who gets the credit.” I like it because it is so true. Name something that you are extremely glad you did or accomplished. I delivered the commencement address at University of West Georgia’s graduation. What advice would you give your younger self just starting out on their own. Have fun and treat everyone with respect.n _______________________________

To get in good physical shape. If you weren’t doing what you are, you would be …

Best piece of advice you’ve received.

Stand up comedian.

You never know what might be going on in someone’s life.

Your go-to food.

Be kind.

Pizza.

If I had it to do over …

Favorite movies(s).

I would do everything exactly like the first time. No regrets.

Gone with the Wind, Shawshank Redemption, Groundhog Day.

The Film Fix … Streaming Edition

with Jonathan W. Hickman

Capsule Reviews … New Rating System - A “Fix" is recommended with a rating between 6 and 10! a “No Fix” with ratings of 1 to 5 isn’t. http://dailyfilmfix.com/ Jonathan W. Hickman is an entertainment attorney, filmmaker, college professor, and novelist. More about Jonathan can be found by visiting http://filmproductionlaw.com/)

In Theaters: Thor: Love and Thunder (July 8, 2022) – Following an advanced screening last month, Atlanta critics were largely mixed on this one. Oscar-winning writer and director Taika Waititi returns to the MCU after having shepherded “Thor: Ragnarok” to Herculean success in 2017. This time around, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is called out of retirement to batter Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale). As he gets in shape, he assembles a team that includes his pal Krog (voiced by Waititi) and his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who happens to wield the magical hammer the Mjolnir capably. Where the Crawdads Sing (July 15, 2022) - This is an adaptation of the bestselling novel by Delia Owens. Kya Clark (Daisy EdgarJones) is a town oddity, having been abandoned by her family and left to raise herself in the marshlands of the Deep South in the 1950s. When a popular young teen is found murdered, his link to Kya makes her the number one suspect. Nope (July 22) - Jordan Peele (the directing auteur responsible for the Oscar-winning “Get Out” and the terrific “Us”) returns with this horror-science fiction ode. From what could be gleaned by the film’s first two trailers, siblings OJ and Emerald Haywood (played by Keke Palmer and Oscar-winner Daniel Kaluuya) make a startling, possibly extraterrestrial discovery. They employ a washedup filmmaker (played by Michael Wincott) to document everything. As Peele continues his provocative and successful filmmaking journey, one reminiscent of M. Night Shyamalan, one wonders if the otherworldly “Nope” will be his “Signs.”

Theatrical Teasers:

“Loot” is a sitcom with dramatic elements, and creators Matt Hubbard and Alan Yang (see “Parks and Recreation”) can’t decide on a tone. Rudolph is undoubtedly up to the challenge and shows us how effective she can be in one particular episode where her character appears on the popular YouTube series, the Hot Ones. This unrelenting and ruthless sequence is a series highlight.

Sniper: The White Raven - (limited theatrical and video on demand) - This “ripped-from-headlines” action drama centers on the Russo-Ukrainian War. After losing his family, Mykola (Aldoshyn Pavlo), a Ukrainian physics teacher, turns to the gun for revenge. Rising to the ranks of an elite sniper, Mykola targets a Russian sniper in a personal mission that could impact the overall conflict. Although bearing the “Sniper” title, “The White Raven” does not appear to be part of that series that began in 1993 and starred Tom Berenger.

The Terminal List - l Fix Rating 6/10 (streaming now) - This show is an adaptation of a novel by Jack Carr. Amazon successfully covered similar ground with “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.” But “The Terminal List” is destined to follow a similar path to the violent and dour Clancy adaptation “Without Remorse.”

Arthouse Corner:

And in keeping with that revenge tale (which, in full disclosure, I kinda liked), “The Terminal List” centers on a Navy SEAL seeking payback in the wake of a mission gone wrong. Episode one ends with a shocking action sequence that sets the severe tone of this Clancy adjacent series with “Jurassic World” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” star Chris Pratt in the lead.

18 1/2 - l Fix Rating 7/10. “18 1/2” takes place in an alternate 1974. The Watergate scandal is raging. A White House transcriptionist named Connie (“Reacher’s” Willa Fitzgerald) discovers a copy of the infamous 18-and-a-half-minute gap in the Nixon tapes. Knowing that the recording is significant, Connie contacts journalist Paul (“First Cow” star John Magaro) in hopes of getting the word out without revealing her identity. Connie “borrows” the tape for the weekend, planning on returning it to her job on Monday. The two decide to rent a room at a local vacation hotel and listen to the evidence together. Their best-laid plans are interrupted by several odd characters, including a busy-body hotel clerk (played with all thumbs by the always funny Richard Kind), a collection of hippies whose mind-expanding activities beckon Paul and Connie to join in, and a strange older couple who might be swingers. “18 1/2” is an unusual, topical film of interest to indie film fans and folks fascinated by an alternate view of a dark moment in American history.n _______________________________

Streaming Selects: The Bob’s Burgers Movie (July 12) - After completing its profitable theatrical run, which rang up more than $33 million worldwide, the Belchers bring their feature-length adventure to the small screen. The story has the restaurant placed in jeopardy when a water main break creates a giant sinkhole in front of their business. But while Bob and Linda reach their wit’s end, the kids seek to solve a mystery that might save the day. This movie is the film adaptation of the beloved television series.

At the same time, Molly fumbles through her next act, struggling to figure out what to do with her newly minted financial and personal freedom and her yacht full of cash.

From Special Reports The Coweta County Development Authority and Development Authority of Coweta County have selected a finalist for the economic development organization’s next president. Spire is a 160-year-old utility company that serves Sarah Jacobs 1.7 million homes and businesses across Alabama, Mississippi, and Missouri. “Sarah will bring a wealth of economic development experience to Coweta,” according to Daviston. “She has worked major economic development projects as well as small and medium size ventures. She has the marketing background and drive to build upon the foundation that has been put in place for the past 10 years or so.” Prior to Spire, Jacobs served as the director,

Jacobs is a graduate of Maryville University in Missouri where she earned a Bachelor of Business Administration and Master of Business Administration degree. “Early in the executive search process, we took the time to listen to our stakeholders in the community and at the regional and state levels to learn about the skill sets and character traits they felt were important for our new president,” Daviston said. “Experience, negotiation talents, strategic thinking, strong collaboration and relationship building skills, and marketing expertise where key phrases we heard. Sarah has these abilities and more. I look forward to working with her.” Jacobs has been extremely active during her career, serving as a board member and executive committee member of the Hawthorn Foundation; board member and executive committee member of the Economic Development Council of St. Charles County; Economic Development Corporation of Jefferson County board member; Southern Economic Development Council; Missouri Economic Development Council; State Technical College Foundation board member; St. Louis School Business Partnership board member; Missouri Chamber of Commerce – Leadership Missouri, Class of 2019; St. Louis Regional Advanced Manufacturing Partnership, advisory board member; Alliance STL, advisory board member; and Southern Gas Association Leadership Section Committee member.

“Georgia is one of the most business-friendly markets for economic development in the country,” says Jacobs. “I look forward to working with the current team members and board to strategize about how we can build upon the successes of the past to grow the tax base and provide additional solid employment opportunities in Coweta County. My husband and I are excited about becoming a

part of the community.” Jacobs’ husband Matt is Head of Business Operations for American AgCredit. They have one daughter, Jordan. Jacobs will be voted upon by the authorities after a required 14-day waiting period as specified in Georgia law for public agencies. Her first day in the position is scheduled for August 1.

Support such as assistance in accessing running water or heat can make a critical difference in a patient’s health and recovery from illness or injury. “I had given a great deal of thought to two issues that are very important to me,” said Millie’s husband, Bob Coggin, who established the fund in her honor. “One of those issues involved finding a way for Millie and me to become long-term supporters of the Clinic’s Patient Assist Program,” said Coggin. “The other issue relates to me identifying a significant way to let Millie, our family, and our friends know how much I love her and appreciate the support she has given me during our 61 years of marriage. During a recent conversation with Amy Kelly (Social Work Case Manager) about our interest, it occurred to me that I could leverage this issue to achieve both of my objectives.” The Coweta Samaritan Clinic, which began caring for patients in October 2011, provides free healthcare to uninsured adult residents of Coweta County. In addition to medical services, patients also receive support from Amy Kelly, LCSW, ACM, thanks to community partner Piedmont Newnan Hospital. Kelly works to identify psychosocial needs that affect patients’ health and wellbeing, and then connects them with appropriate community resources that meet specific needs outside of healthcare. “We are so fortunate to work with many community partners who help us ensure our patients’ needs are met,” said Kelly. “There are instances, however, when we need to help a patient get through a uniquely challenging time (such as the recent high temperatures we’ve experienced by providing an air conditioning unit). Our Patient Assist Program is a safety net that simply does not exist for many of our patients. It is an important extension of care for the population we serve. The establishment of the Millie Coggin Patient Assist Trust Fund gives us a sustainable way to provide non-medical support for patients as critical needs emerge in the future.” Clinic founder, Chairman, and volunteer Medical Director, Kay Crosby, M.D. recently spoke about the Fund and the Coggin family’s impact throughout the Clinic’s nearly twelve years of operation.

“When I think of ‘Good Samaritans,’ I immediately think of Millie and Bob Coggin,” said Crosby. “They have been incredible supporters since the Clinic was simply an idea,” said Crosby. “From serving on our Board, to volunteering with various committees and events; and always being willing to provide guidance,

Amy Kelly, Dr. Kay Crosby, Bob Coggin, Millie Coggin, Cindy Coggin, Jeff Coggin, Kelly Hines feedback, and counsel; they have been invested in our mission from day one. We are deeply honored and humbled that they are entrusting us with this Fund. As the parable of the Good Samaritan teaches us to love our neighbors as ourselves, Bob and Millie most certainly set an example for all of us in doing just that.” The Coweta Samaritan Clinic is funded nearly entirely through private donations. Including in-kind expenses for donated volunteer time, services, and patient assistance program medications, more than 95% of Clinic expenses support direct patient care. Since its inception, the Clinic has served roughly 2,200 Coweta County residents through more than 27,000 patient visits. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the Clinic never stopped serving its patients, offering telemedicine patient care options, designated times to pick up medications and supplies, and helping patients navigate COVID-related challenges such as job loss. When the EF4 tornado hit Coweta County in March 2021, the Clinic also ensured that approximately 90 Clinic patients who were in the tornado’s path were safe, had the medications and supplies they needed, and were connected to appropriate resources to recover and rebuild if their homes were damaged. Contributions may be made to support the Millie Coggin Patient Assist Fund by mailing a check to Coweta Samaritan Clinic, PO Box 963, Newnan, GA 30264 (noting the fund in the memo line) or by visiting www. cowetasamaritanclinic.org and selecting the fund as the gift designation.

Mr. Personality Newnan’s Goodwill Ambassador

The month of July, Independence Day, aka July the 4th and my sister’s birthday. Things are heating up weatherwise at last. I truly thought I would end up freezing to death. As Market Day is taking off to a good start this summer, I love to speak with all the many vendors as I can learn so much about honey, honey bees, goats and homemade soap and other things. Last month I had the fun experience and honor of meeting two sisters from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They were indeed most uplifting and positive as their inner light shone brightly through their bright smiles.

I could truly feel their positive energy and strong vibrations from all the way across the street. We of course had a nice chat, pictures were taken and sweet memories were made that day. What a joy they both were. Another person I had the pleasure of meeting on the corner across from “Let Them Eat Toffee” last month was Jacob Joiner, a guitar player and this young man is indeed good. Jacob has been practicing playing guitar for four years. Jacob enjoys coming to the same spot on the corner on Fridays from 5-9 p.m. I would love to see more people take advantage of the Courthouse Square in this manner. I would love to see people playing music, painting, taking pictures of everything. This town is so very blessed to have such a wonderful courthouse square. I love this town more and more every day and all the kind and loving people I embrace everywhere I go. Would it not be an amazing sight if each Sunday afternoon a church choir was singing on every corner of the square? Maybe we could bring back the ice cream socials of the past right there on the Courthouse Square. I am truly experiencing an increase in my daily happiness due to my spiritual journey of these past nine years. Little did I know that by coming to this state and town I would enter Heaven on earth.

Thank you for supporting your small family owned local business!

I have experienced and learned firsthand about the power of spoken blessings right here in this amazing spirit-filled town. I experience “church” every day when I am sitting on the courthouse square or just conversing with someone. This brings me to my Book of the Month titled “The Power of Spoken Blessings” by Bill Gothard. This small but powerful book is well worth reading. We can truly simply speak blessings upon people as they hurry past us. It truly is a blessing for those receiving such a blessing and for the one doing the blessing. It is indeed a double blessing in that manner. A practice I started last month, experience this book for yourself. Until next time, Peace, love and much respect, Mr. Personality n _______________________________

Real Estate

Shift Happens

with Jess Barron

The real estate market is changing. We are seeing a significant shift in the market as the number of active listings increase and buyer demand slows down. Keep in mind, this is a gradual change and not a sudden and dramatic change. I have seen the number of active listings in Coweta County go from around 140-150 when I check every morning to around 250-300 recently. We have also noticed that the number of buyers in the marketplace has decreased. Prices are staying strong, but the showing traffic and the volume of offers are not what they once were. As recently as this year I would receive 20 + offers on a property but those days seem to be gone. A significant reason for this sudden change is the increase in rates. In late June, mortgage rates rose above six percent. The Federal Reserve announced a large ¾ percent raise of interest rates in June. The Federal Reserve has also stated that they expect to raise the rates several times this year and next to combat rising inflation in our country. All this seems to have cooled real estate buyer activity. As mortgage rates rise, a mortgage payment becomes higher and higher. An article I read recently from Lawrence Yun, from the National Association of Realtors, stated that the payment on a $300,000 mortgage went from $1,265 in December of 2021 to over $1,800 in June of 2022 because of the mortgage rate increase. This is pricing many buyers out of the market. Another reason buyers are leaving the market is how competitive the market is. I wrote about this in a recent article as we are seeing home buying fatigue. Some buyers are tired of losing multiple offer situations over and over. We are seeing large institutional cash investors frequently out bid occupant buyers obtaining a mortgage. Many buyers are simply waiting for the market to cool down. In fact, this “cool down” could be a good thing for the real estate market and economy in the long run. Jerome Powell, the chairman for the Federal Reserve, has stated that the housing market needs a “reset,” particularly for young homebuyers. Prices have kept increasing despite an increase in listings and a decrease in buyer traffic. It is still a seller’s market in Coweta County, just not as strong as it once was. While the market is shifting, I do not think prices will cool down as quickly as many buyers hope they will. Jess Barron is an Associate Broker with Lindseys, Inc. HISTORY with Emily Kimbell

A brief history of the bikini When Brian Hyland released his hit song Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini in June 1960, the concept of the bikini swimsuit was relatively new. A stark contrast from modern society, his lyrics depict the newness and discomfort of women trying out the latest fashion — “She was afraid to come out of the locker. She was as nervous as she could be. She was afraid to come out of the locker. She was afraid that somebody would see.” The invention of the bikini in the 1940s was seen as incredibly scandalous as the idea of a women’s visible navel was thought to be shocking. While 20th-century women were hesitant to embrace the idea of wearing such limited clothing in public, the history of women’s swimwear reveals a surprising past. Before the 18th century, the concept of a bathing suit or swimwear was non-existent, making it relatively common for people to swim either in their underwear or completely nude. With the rise of travel technology and particularly, the advent of the railroad making travel to beaches more possible, the need for more modest swimwear arose. The bathing gown became popular considering the rise in popularity of “sea bathing.” The bathing gown was a long shift-style dress fitted with lead weights at the hem to ensure the gown did not rise improperly while immersing in the water. In the early 19th century, sun-bathing and swimming became more of a popular leisure activity rather than a health-related activity creating a need for change in style. Women’s swimwear became tighter and more form-fitting than the bathing gown; however, modesty and proper behavior remained the forefront of design. During this time, bathing suits often consisted of a bathing dress plus drawers and stockings made of wool, linen, cotton. These fabrics were not conducive for hot weather, and the fabrics would Bathing Dresses - An advertisement for bathing dressbecome too heavy for women to even engage in es published in the 1860s by Godey’s Lady’s Book swimming activities. shows the popular women’s swimwear of the time. The bathing suit continued to alter in appearance throughout the 1900s and experienced a drastic change when women were first permitted to swim competitively on the world stage. Annette Kellerman from Australia revolutionized social attitudes toward swimming when she wore a tight-fitting swimsuit that showed off the lower half of her legs to perform in front of the British Royal Family in 1905. She faced accusations of violating modesty standards inspiring her to sew black stockings onto her existing swimsuit. When competing in Boston in 1907, Kellerman again was accused of indecent exposure and arrested for wearing a one-piece suit that showed off her arms and legs; however, a judge agreed with her stance that heavy, ill-fitting swimwear was not a practical garment for swimming. While her highly publicized incident caused some change in public perception, it also caused other organizations, government departments, and police to more so enforce strict swimwear policies. After Kellerman’s public incident, women’s Annette Kellerman is shown in her infamous one- swimwear began to change drastically and quickly. In the 1910s, bathing suits started showing more skin piece suit circa 1900. with “v” or “u” shaped necklines and skirt bottoms. After the invention of lastex yarn in 1931 which revolutionized swimwear, wool swimwear was replaced by the more practical fabric that kept its shape in and out of water. The two-piece swimwear concept started in Europe in the 1930s with women wearing halter tops and shorts that showed a sliver of the midriff. In the 1940s, a shortage of resources during World War II caused the government to call for a ten percent reduction in fabric content for women’s swimwear and modest two-piece suits made their appearance in the United States. In 1946, two competing French designers, Jacques Heim and Louis Réard, designed and introduced prototypes of the bikini. Jacques Heim marketed his suit as the “Atom” publicized as the “world’s smallest bathing suit.” However, it was Réard’s bikini, named after the Bikini Atoll Island which months before the swimwear’s introduction was the site of the first nuclear bomb test, that gained the most popularity and became the namesake of the new style.

Prohibited Bathing Suit - Two women are escorted off the beach by a policewoman in Chicago circa 1922 for violating public decency laws. Réard debuted his design of a bra top with a triangle bottom on July 5 with Micheline Bernardini modeling the two-piece. The swimwear was met with controversy and inspired bans from public wear in some countries; however, the design started gaining in popularity. In the 1950s and 1960s, the emphasis on liberation made the bikini a mainstay in Europe and brought the bikini to the United States. After Bridget Bardot wore a bikini in the 1952 French film Manina, The Girl in the Bikini, the bikini started to gain in popularity. Now immortalized through songs, film and media, and pop culture, the popularity of the bikini continued to grow and is now a staple in mainstream society. Newnan-native, Emily Kimbell is the director of the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society and McRitchieHollis Museum. Emily is currently finishing her doctoral studies at Georgia State University, where she also teaches English Composition courses and is an active member of her community often seen on stage in local theatre productions and writing for local media outlets. n

First Bikini - Micheline Bernardini models the first bikini at the Piscine Molitor in Paris on July 4, 1946 - a date now known as National Bikini Day.
