Some photos from March 1 Wicked Oscar Gala
The 18th Annual Oscar Gala was held Saturday, March 1 at the Newnan Centre. There was a DJ, delicious food and wine, open bar beverage service, and a fabulous Silent Auction. Everyone came together in a “Wicked” way to support Newnan-Coweta and Howard Warner Boys and Girls Clubs!
These clubs work to serve hundreds of kids and teens each year to help them reach their fullest potential. They provide an environment where all youth can feel safe and secure to dream, discover, and develop. Their programs focus on helping kids succeed in school, live healthy, and become leaders.

Notes from Perry Street
Back in the early 1800s, American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote “music is the universal language of mankind.”
Corby, who co-owns The Paper and The Coweta Shopper with me, would say that “it changed my life. Music gave me direction through singing.”
We focus a lot on local musicians and live music here at The Paper. Okay, we talk a lot about food too, but let’s stick with one subject today. We are blessed with so many great musicians here in Coweta County.
I would say Kris Youmans, who writes The Music column for us, could be considered the grandmother of the Coweta music scene. I mean that with utmost respect, as she has probably raised up more musicians than anyone I know. Except maybe Quincy Jones, but again, that’s another story.
I look forward to them joining up again, and once again, hope for a front row seat.
To all the local musicians out there, thank you for contributing your art.
And readers, please support them when you can. Check out Kris’ column to see who is playing where each month. Until next time.
Kris was recently joined with Melody Kiser and Mary Claire Martin for a session called the Ladies of Song Sessions. Handling the accompanying parts were David Puett and Patrick Thompson, two musicians who could front their own bands with ease.
Melody and Mary were just on fire, belting (in a very good musical way I mean) one original after another. For two hours, I was fortunate to watch and listen to five wonderful musicians honoring us with their craft.

**Surviving and Thriving at the Aspen Snowball Gala**
Article and Photos by Emily Chandler-Westergreen
What happens when you mix a luxurious hotel, a killer cause, and a snowstorm of glittering glam? You get the Children’s Oncology Support Fund (COSF) Aspen Snowball Gala at the St Regis in Aspen, and oh, what a night it was!
Picture this: the majestic backdrop of Aspen’s snowy peaks, with the St Regis standing tall like a modern-day castle. Cue the princess look! Thanks to Newnan’s own Lillian Gardens bridal boutique, I repurposed a full-length feather embellished couture gown with a six-foot train into an outfit custom made for my inner snow queen! As I walked into the grand ballroom, I was greeted by the most dazzling sight — an avalanche of sequins, bow ties, and the unmistakable sparkle of hope. Yes, it was a gala for the books, benefiting children’s oncology, and as a cancer survivor myself, I felt like I was walking a glittering path paved with second chances.
First on the agenda: the red carpet. And by red carpet, I mean a plush path that made me feel like royalty. Photographers captured every twirl and laugh, and I might have even struck a pose or two (OK, maybe ten). After all, surviving cancer calls for a lot more than just celebration — it calls for a bit of showing off!
The highlight of the evening? The keynote speakers who were anything but ordinary. Jay Leno hosted the evening and had the audience roaring with laughter while bidding on auction items that cost more than most cars in his impressive collection. Health and wellness guru and fellow cancer survivor Brooke Burke dazzled the crowd with her special brand of beauty and energy. She even signed a cowboy hat for me that will be auctioned for a local Newnan charity (stay tuned for a chance to win your own little slice of the glamour for good!)
As the night drew to a close, the auction winners were announced. I didn’t win the $150,000 Anthony James light sculpture that would have been the perfect conversation piece at Underground Runway, but the joy of knowing that the proceeds were going towards children’s oncology research was the real prize. The sense of community, the shared stories, and the collective commitment to fighting cancer made the Aspen Snowball Gala a night to remember. Not to mention the whopping sum of $3.5 million dollars raised by the COSF Foundation which will go towards providing less toxic treatments and therapies for children battling cancer.
So, here’s to the warriors, the survivors, and everyone who believes in the power of hope. The Aspen Snowball Gala wasn’t just an event — it was a celebration of life, laughter, and the indomitable human spirit. Until next year, stay fabulous and keep sparkling!

Thrill of racing returns to downtown Newnan on April 19 with third annual Coweta Grand Prix
The thrill of racing will return to downtown Newnan on April 19, 2025, when the third annual Coweta Grand Prix is presented by Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation of America. With proceeds to benefit the Coweta Community Foundation, this exhilarating event will support local students through the Yamaha Downhill Dreams Academy, where youth will have the opportunity to build and race their own cars.
According to the Foundation, this event is one “where passion meets STEM education, instilling leadership values and fostering teamwork, creating champions on and off the track!” The event is not just for youth, as there is an adult division as well.
Scott McInnis, executive director of the Coweta Community Foundation, said, “We’re looking forward to our best race yet
in downtown Newnan, and it’s an event where the whole family can participate.” McInnis noted that anyone eight and older can race in the event, and it’s easy to go online and register. You build a car according to the race guidelines, then challenge friends and rivals to participate as well before showing up on race day ready for a good time.
And for those who would like to support this worthy community effort, sponsorships at a variety of levels are available as well.
For more details on race rules, visit www.cowetafoundation. org/coweta-grand-prix/
The Coweta Community Foundation’s mission is to enhance the community’s quality of life by encouraging philanthropic interaction to provide a catalyst to help focus local philanthropy on the community’s ever-changing needs. As a Foundation, it manages individual gifts and bequests that enhance and support the quality of life in Coweta County. For more information, please visit cowetafoundation.org
When a professional in any field finds a home at a company whose standards for high-quality work and overall values align with his or her own, it’s a perfect match.
Belize Ellison, a senior sustainability engineer at Yamaha, has found such a match. Her role involves reducing Yamaha’s carbon footprint to enhance its business model.
“I want to help us be the best Yamaha we can today without compromising future Yamaha’s ability to continue to be the best,” she said. “That is my job.”
Ellison is thrilled to work for a company which values the same things she is personally passionate about when it comes to sustainability. As a relatively young engineer less than a decade into her career, she also appreciates being part of a brand recognized around the world for excellence – “the best of the best,” as she put it.

Spring Selling Season Is Around the Corner
Spring is the best time to sell your home. More homes are sold between Spring and Fall than any other time of the year (per GAMLS). Real estate correlates with both the weather and school year.
Buyers prefer to look at homes when the weather is nice. Families prefer to move their families once the school year is over. Children are already out of school then and do not have to change schools mid-year. The last day of school for Coweta County is May 23rd. When considering
the average market time to sell, a 30-60 day closing process, its best to list in the Spring to accomplish a late Spring or Summer move.
The first day of Spring officially begins on March 20th. As a Realtor, we have seen activity pick up tremendously in February. Homeowners have contacted real estate agents for assistance in pricing, marketing and the listing process. Buyer activity and showings have increased. There is still time left for you to capture the busy selling season. The next part of this article will provide some helpful tips from Realtor.com for selling your home.
1
Get realistic about how much your home is worth It is natural to think your home is priceless, or hope it is worth at least more than when you bought it. Many sellers make the mistake of placing a pie-in-the-sky price on their home with the hopes that some buyer will bite. But the reality is, overpriced homes tend to sit on the market. Potential buyers begin to think that something is “wrong” with a house when it sits on the market and become apprehensive to pursue the property. You want to be able to make a great first impression when the home hits the market. A correct price can often result in multiple offers and a contract price well-above list price.
2
Keep clutter from creeping in Clutter can make a spacious home feel claustrophobic. It is crucial that you toss, donate, gift, or recycle anything you do not love or use. This is also true for those hidden areas like your closets and cabinets. Buyers will poke their heads in these areas. You must also be able to de-personalize your property. Buyers will need to be envision themselves in your home. Family pictures, souvenirs, trophies, etc., along with clutter, prevent the buyers from doing so.
3
Keep your home show-ready 24/7 It can be difficult to keep your home pictureperfect for buyers all the time, but it is well worth the pain and suffering. Having your property listed on the market will require you to live a certain way while your home is listed. This means keeping your home clean and presentable at all times. This includes smells and pets. Landscaping and keeping a yard “fresh” is to not be overlooked. You do not know when that perfect buyer will be coming to your home!

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month: What to Know
Piedmont Oncology highlights risk factors symptoms, prevention and treatment.
March is national colorectal cancer awareness month. Piedmont Oncology physicians want to educate people about the disease and what you can do to decrease your risk of developing it or enable an earlier, more curable diagnosis.
Colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in the United States. More than half of all colorectal cancers can be link to preventable risk factors like body weight, lack of physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption and diet.
The American Cancer Society recommends people start regular screenings at age 45 and continue through age 75. People at high-risk based on family history or other factors should start before age 45. Not all colorectal cancer cases can be prevented but there are ways to lower your risk.
“Get screened regularly by having a colonoscopy or using an at-home test kit based on your primary care provider’s suggestion,” says Ibrahim Adamu, M.D., general surgeon who specializes in colon and rectal surgery, with Piedmont Physicians Surgical Specialists Newnan. “Changing behaviors like exercising regularly, following a healthy diet, limiting alcohol consumption and stopping smoking or using tobacco products will greatly help.”
Many colorectal cancers do not cause symptoms in early stages so it can be difficult to detect without screenings. Common signs and symptoms may include blood in the stool, change in bowel habits or stool appearance, stomach cramping or pain, poor appetite, unexplained weight loss or weakness.
“Innovative colorectal cancer treatment options depend on a number of factors but may include chemotherapy, immunotherapy or radiation therapy,” Dr. Adamu says. “Piedmont Oncology specialists will be there for patients in their time of need to provide a high-quality cancer treatment plan.”

Piedmont Rocks! Benefit Concert Featuring Yacht Rock Schooner Coming to Newnan March 22
Piedmont Newnan Hospital, a non-profit healthcare provider, will host its inaugural benefit concert, Piedmont Rocks!, on March 22, 2025 at the Newnan Centre Amphitheatre, the first of its kind. This new philanthropic event will replace the Piedmont Newnan Soiree held in previous years.
“We are very excited about offering an event that the entire community can come to and enjoy,” said Mike Robertson, CEO of Piedmont Newnan. “We are dedicated to providing outstanding healthcare close to home, but we also love the opportunity to engage with the community outside of the hospital.”
The inaugural event, presented by Mike and Cyndi Winslett, will feature Yacht Rock Schooner as the headliner.
The 8-man Schooner is one of the longest running soft rock tributes and plays tunes from the late ‘70s and early 80s, including songs by Hall & Oates, Steely Dan, Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald and more.
The annual benefit concert will support Piedmont Newnan Hospital with this year’s ticket sale proceeds directed toward oncology services at Piedmont Newnan, including the support of direct patient care programs, capital needs associated with our oncology programs, and program support for the Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness Center.
“Many people don’t realize we are a not-for-profit hospital and that many of our programs and services would not be possible without the generous support of our community and donors,” said Robertson. “This annual event allows us to celebrate Piedmont Newnan’s accomplishments and the community that has supported us while raising money for those affected by cancer.”
This is an outdoor concert, and individual tickets and sponsorship opportunities will be available at piedmont.org/piedmontrocks. In addition to a night of dancing and singing along to soft rock hits, attendees can purchase dinner from food trucks offering a variety of menu options, and a cash bar will be onsite offering an array of beverages for purchase. Opening band, Pete & Pete, will kick-off the night before Yacht Rock Schooner takes the stage.
Grab your captains’ hats and get ready for a fun night of dancing at Piedmont Rocks! on March 22, 2025.

Vaughn named ‘Artist of the Month’ for March
The Newnan-Coweta Art Association (NCAA) has selected Pammy Vaughn as the featured “Artist of the Month” for March. Vaughn’s art will be featured in the entry way of Newnan’s City Hall (25 LaGrange Street) until the beginning of April.
Vaughn was born in Stuttgart, Germany to a military family and later moved to her hometown in Augusta, Ga., where she attended high school and discovered her love of art. Fifteen years ago, she moved to Newnan, where she happily resides with her husband.
As a child, Pammy loved art in all forms and was President of the Art Club in her junior and senior years, and was voted most artistic-senior superlative. She was presented with several scholarships to highly accredited art institutes. Life, however, took a different turn, and she abandoned her dream.
Her artistic journey is finally coming full circle and she now proudly calls herself an artist. In high school she had a love for drawing with colored pencils, but has discovered an affinity for abstract painting with acrylics. She loves bold colors, heavy bodied textures, and metallic foils. Vaughn is on a never ending journey to find her niche and paint her world in living color.
Pammy is a member of the NCAA. NCAA’s general meetings are held on the 3rd Monday of each month (August through May) at the Harriet Alexander Art Center, on Hospital Road, at 6:30 p.m. An art demonstration is presented each month. Visitors and new members are always welcome.

A Guide to Veterans Benefits for Home Care
As the population of aging veterans continues to grow across the nation, many families face challenges in finding personalized care solutions. Financial considerations can often be a significant hurdle in securing the support their loved ones need.
Many veterans of the U.S. military—including those who served in the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, or Coast Guard—may not realize they could qualify for inhome care benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
Who is Eligible for VA Home Care Benefits?
Your loved one may qualify for financial assistance to cover in-home personal care if they meet certain requirements:
• They served in active duty in the military, naval, or air service and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable.
• Members of the Reserves or National Guard may also qualify if they were called to active duty by a federal order (not for training purposes) and completed the full term of their service.
Understanding VA Programs for Home Care Benefits
Veterans may be eligible for benefits under the VA’s Community Care Network (CCN) program or the Aid and Attendance program.
Community Care Network (CCN) Benefits
Through the CCN program, veterans may receive coverage for home-health care services. This service can provide a variety of personal care needs, such as bathing and dressing, in addition to home maker needs, like cooking and housekeeping. A service care coordinator is assigned to assess
Steps to Apply for VA Home Care Benefits
Families can apply for these benefits by completing VA Form 10-10EZ and submitting it to the Department of Veterans Affairs. Additional steps include:
• Visiting a local VA center to speak with a service coordinator, case manager, or social worker.
• Gathering documentation, including proof of military service, identification, financial records, and medical information, as required.
A VA service representative can guide you through the process and provide details on the documents needed.
When to Apply
the veteran’s care needs and determine the number of hours of care required each week. They will then contact a VA authorized agency, like Home Helpers, who will provide you with qualified caregivers. Payments for CCN services are made directly from the VA to the authorized care provider.
Aid and Attendance Benefits
This program is available to veterans receiving a VA pension who require assistance with daily living activities. Eligibility criteria include:
• Needing help with tasks like dressing, bathing, or eating.
• Being confined to bed due to illness or injury.
• Residing in a nursing home.
• Having limited vision.
• Requiring supervision due to dementia or other cognitive diseases.
For veterans unable to leave their homes because of a permanent disability, the VA may provide additional “Housebound” benefits. These funds are typically added to the veteran’s monthly pension.
It’s advisable to begin the application process as soon as possible—even before in-home care is required. Processing times can be lengthy, and early application can help avoid out-of-pocket expenses while waiting for approval.
How Our Care Services Support Veterans
Home Helpers is proud to assist veterans who wish to age in place by offering professional in-home care services. Our caregivers provide support with:
• Personal care tasks, such as bathing, grooming, and dressing.
• Household chores, including light cleaning, laundry and meal preparation.
• Assistance with mobility and toileting needs.

In Theaters:
The Film Fix … Streaming Edition with
Jonathan W. Hickman
Capsule Reviews … New Rating System - A “Fix" is recommended with a rating between 6 and 10! a “No Fix” with ratings of 1 to 5 isn’t. http://dailyfilmfix.com/
Jonathan W. Hickman is an entertainment attorney, filmmaker, college professor, and novelist. More about Jonathan can be found by visiting http://filmproductionlaw.com/
Last Breath (now playing) – l Fix Rating 7/10 – This harrowing and inspirational picture is directed by Alex Parkinson, the filmmaker who chronicled the same true tale in a 2019 documentary. The narrative follows a saturation diver named Chris Lemons (play by Finn Cole), who gets stranded at the bottom of the North Sea while attempting to repair an underwater pipeline. The movie is an exacting recreation of the heroic efforts to rescue him as his oxygen supply runs out. Simu Liu (“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”) and Woody Harrellson co-star.
The Monkey (now playing) – l Fix Rating 6/10 – “The Monkey” isn’t one of the best Stephen King adaptations (it’s based on a short story). However, the wacky, absurd approach by “Longlegs” director Osgood Perkins has an energy to it that might infect the cool kids with King nostalgia. The comic gore on display in this film easily fills huge vats with sinewy body parts and buckets of blood. Perkins’ unapologetically violent sequences are masterfully mounted and comedically effective even if his narrative loses its way by the film’s middle section.
Streaming Selects:
The Electric State (March 14) – The Russo Brothers (see “Avengers: Endgame”) continue their responsibilities as part of their blockbuster streaming deal with the platform. “The Electric State” is another big-budgeted science fiction epic, this time starring Chris Pratt and “Stranger Things” star Millie Bobby Brown. The story unfolds in a retro-futuristic 1990s America after a robot conflict of some sort. Brown stars as Michelle, a teen who teams up with a robot and a drifter named Keats (Pratt) to search for her younger brother.
The Studio (March 26) – l Fix Rating 7/10 – Seth Rogen serves as a series co-creator alongside his “Sausage Party” coproducer Evan Goldberg to deliver this amusing Hollywood parody. Rogen plays movie executive Matt Remick, who takes over the top spot at Continental Studios, where he’s expected to make money (not art like he desperately wants). As he navigates his way around and through the pitfalls of running a major studio, he’s tasked with shepherding a big-screen adaptation of Kool-Aid. In the wake of the success of “Barbie,” the big money appears to be on bringing the story of the Kool-Aid Man (and his family) to theaters. The supporting cast is terrific, led by Catherine O’Hara, Kathryn Hahn, Ike Barinholtz, and newcomer Chase Sui Wonders. “The Studio” is a must-see for industry insiders and those with knowledge of Hollywood dysfunction.
The Righteous Gemstones (season 4, March 9) – Season 4 is the final season of the popular and hilarious series “The Righteous Gemstones.” As Gemstone patriarch Eli (John Goodman) continues to fade into retirement, the evangelical ministry he started has been handed over to his questionably competent children. These children all have very different approaches to expanding their religious empire and spend most of their time fighting with each other. This show, created by star Danny McBride, is over the top. Still, like most of his projects (see “Vice Principals,” for example), a sweetness undergirds the narrative, making it positively irresistible. And, yes, the trailers promise the return of Walton Goggins as Baby Billy Freeman.
Daredevil: Born Again (two-episode premiere on March 4) –Charlie Cox returns to the role of Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, to continue the story first introduced on Netflix in 2015. Cox appeared as Murdock in 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” and the Disney+ series “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” and “Echo.” “Born Again” will bring back characters from the previous series, including Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, aka the Kingpin of Crime. Also, a new villain threatens in the form of a mysterious serial killer named Muse, who was part of Daredevil’s rogues’ gallery in the comics and was an art-obsessed criminal who created “masterpieces” with his victims’ blood. It sounds like pretty gruesome stuff!
Theatrical Teasers:
Mickey 17 (March 7) — Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho (see “Parasite”) joins forces with Robert Pattinson for this wacky-looking adaptation of Edward Ashton’s popular novel “Mickey 7.” Because movie adaptations are always bigger than their source material, this one ups the book’s number of Mickey Barnes copies (called “expendables”) by the power of ten in this science fiction film about attempts to colonize an inhospitable and frigid planet.
Queen of the Ring (March 7) – This sports film is helmed by Ash Avildsen, the son of late director John G. Avildsen (Oscar winner for “Rocky” and the filmmaker who gave us “The Karate Kid”). Based on the true story of pioneering female professional wrestler Mildred Burke (Emily Bett Rickards), “Queen of the Ring” chronicles the rise of a single mother in a male-dominated sport and how she became the first woman athlete to earn a million dollars.
Black Bag (March 14) — Director Steven Soderbergh, who just dropped the creepy “Presence” into theaters in January, reteams with actor Michael Fassbender (see 2011’s underrated “Haywire”) and Cate Blanchett (see 2006’s “The Good German”) for this slick-looking spy thriller. Fassbender and Blanchett play married intelligence agents George and Kathryn. When Kathryn is suspected of working for the other side, George must choose between his loyalty to his nation and his love for his wife.
Novocaine (March 14) — “The Boys” star Jack Quaid plays Nathan Caine, a mild-mannered guy with a unique genetic disorder that gives him a congenital insensitivity to pain. When his girlfriend is kidnapped during a bank robbery, Nathan must put his extraordinary ability to work to rescue her. Like last month’s “Love Hurts,” this one looks like another “John Wick” imitator but with a heightened genetic twist.
Snow White (March 21) – Disney’s live-action adaptations of their animated library continue with this reimaging of the 1937 classic. Rachel Zegler (“West Side Story”) is the title character opposite Gal
Gadot (“Wonder Woman”) as the Evil Queen. Expect this version to depict Snow White as a more active and heroic character determined to reclaim her kingdom.
Death of a Unicorn (March 28) – This A24 monster horror film features an A-list ensemble cast with the likes of Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd, among others. The trailers reveal that a man (Rudd) and his daughter (Ortega) hit a unicorn on the road to an isolated mansion. Of course, they load the beast into their SUV and take it to their destination. But they are unprepared when the mother unicorn comes around for her baby. Don’t expect rainbows and heartfelt pleasantries in this dark comedy.
A Working Man (March 28) – Everyone’s favorite English martial arts star, Jason Statham, shows no sign of slowing down even as he closes in on 58 this year. In this actioner, Statham plays a construction worker named Levon Cade. The film is directed by David Ayer (see last year’s Statham collaboration “The Beekeeper”), who works from a screenplay co-written by Sylvester Stallone. When a human trafficking ring kidnaps Cade’s boss’s daughter, Cade is called upon to take up the counter-terrorism skills that he plied before being a working man. Expect a high body count, a hail of bullets, and a Statham fighting ballet.

Lend Me A Tenor is set in September 1934. Saunders, the general manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company, is primed to welcome world-famous singer Tito Merelli, known as Il Stupendo, the greatest tenor of his generation, to appear for one night only as the star of the opera. Tito arrives late, and through a hilarious series of mishaps, he is given a double dose of tranquilizers and passes out. His pulse is so low that Saunders and his assistant Max believe he’s dead - and in a frantic attempt to salvage the evening, Saunders persuades Max to get into Merelli’s costume and fool the audience into thinking he’s Il Stupendo. Max succeeds and lives up to his idol, but Merelli regains consciousness and gets into the identical costume, ready to perform. Now two opera singers are running around in the same costume and two women are running around in lingerie, each thinking she is with Il Stupendo.

The Featured Joint
Everyone has their “go-to” place to eat. It might be with linen tablecloths and waiters in ties, or where you throw peanuts on the floor and carve your initials in the wooden tables. Whatever and wherever, it’s your “joint.” This month’s featured joint is …
Locos Tacos
We were off to find another great street taco sort of joint. I say “we,” meaning Peyton Shelnut, one of my main foodie buddies, and myself. Some of the better joints we’ve featured over the last few months had Peyton’s sign of approval. More on her later in the column.
This time we drove about five minutes down Greenville St. South past downtown Newnan. There is a small strip mall on the left (again, we are heading south from downtown Newnan. If you were heading north toward downtown, it would be on your right.) I think.
They have beef tongue and beef head. Mexican Coke and Mexican Fanta. You know it’s authentic.
I can’t remember the last time I had a Fanta. For you soda junkies, ‘Fanta was created in Nazi Germany in 1941 by Coca-Cola Deutschland to serve as an alternative to Coca-Cola, so says a website that knows such things. “The drink was developed due to an American trade embargo that made it difficult to get Coca-Cola ingredients. The root word means “imagination” in German.
Okay, back to, drum roll, Locos Tacos. It’s bright and cheery, they greet you with a hello and a smile, all good signs. And then … choices.
This is the kind of place where you stare up at the menu and go “ooh, I’ll have that. No, wait. That looks awesome. Heck check out …” You want to come back and try so many other things because the food was fantastic.
I had the Burrito Loco, stuffed with grilled steak, black beans, rice, queso, sour cream, and pico de gallo. Awesome.
I am having the Fajita Bowl next time: rice, steak, chicken, and shrimp with queso, bell peppers, and onions). I will not be having the bell peppers if they are green. I don’t do green eggs and ham and I don’t do green peppers. Red, orange, yellow - absolutely. Peyton had the birria tacos. Something I had never tried before. The short version is it’s a fried taco. Longer version: “Birria is traditionally a spicy and super savory Mexican beef or goat stew that’s slow cooked until the meat is tender and fall-apart juicy and delicious, according to a website that teaches you how to make them. “Someone had the amazing idea to stuff this meaty goodness into a taco shell, and then dip the whole thing into the stew and fry it up.”
Those tacos also come with a consome for dipping that I’d drink with a straw.
And then Peyton ordered dessert because she has some Hispanic relatives and just said “trust me” and I did and wow. Tres Leches cake. Just check out the photo.
Peyton’s take:
“Birria tacos are my go-to favorite and the ones at Locos Tacos did not disappoint. Very flavorful, tender, and served with a delicious consommé that gives it that extra level of savory. The real winner without a doubt is the Tres Leches cake - incredibly moist and rich with flavor. Highly recommend!”
Like I said, she’s a fellow foodie.
One other item I plan on trying are the California or Carne Asada fries - topped with cheese, steak, pico de gallo, guacamole, jalapenos and sour cream.
And who is this Peyton person anyway, and let’s ask some foodie questions.
So, Peyton is the executive director of The Newnan Centre. She’s a lifelong Newnan resident who attended Newnan High School and the University of Georgia. She has a new English Cream Retriever named Lilah.
If you could plan your very last meal, what would it be?
My mom’s meatloaf, mashed potatoes, creamed corn, and cornbread with sweet tea.
We don’t use the word “hate,” but what are foods you abhor/ detest?
I will not eat any kind of bean. And chicken wings, there is just something gross about all the veins and colors and ligaments, and they are just ripping off the meat and throwing the bone. Just not for me.
Favorite Fast Food?
Zaxby’s. But I get cranky if you ask for extra seasoning on your fries and they forget it. That is very disappointing.
Favorite ethnic food?
Asian, especially Pho and Ramen.
Favorite snack/munchie?
Ruffles cheddar sour cream chips are my go-to snack.
Excluding here, Three local favorite Joints?
Garlic, my absolutely favorite spot; Momonoki, favorite sushi in PTC; Rock Salt.
So there you go. A very worthy joint.

The JOINTS
Everyone has their “go-to” place to eat. It might be with linen tablecloths and waiters in ties, or where you throw peanuts on the floor and carve your initials in the wooden tables. Whatever and wherever, it’s your “joint.” There are lots of these places around here, and we’re out to find them all in The Joints column.
February’s JOINT was The Whimzical Cafe
The word” whimsical” is defined as: playfully quaint or fanciful, especially in an appealing and amusing way.
We think “whimzical,” with a “z” fits that definition as well, just add “a fun place to eat.” Located in downtown Newnan across the street from the old Coweta County Administration Building, Whimzical Cafe takes you on a food journey befitting its name.
The lunch menu includes appetizers, sandwiches, pressed sandwiches, salads, flatbreads, and some crazy good “sweet endings.” Choices include Salami Get This, Gyr-o Hero, Brie Mine, Jurassic Pork, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatball, and so on. As an aside, the Double Dipper (prime rib, horseradish, cheddar, and au jus) is awesome.
They’ve got brunch as well. Before we get into that, we strongly suggest you plan to go for lunch or brunch. Otherwise, you will be staring at both menus and by the time you order, it’s time to get back to work. Choose one, and come back another time for the other menu.
Back to brunch. The signature dish must be “The Whimzy.” Just a simple biscuit “stacked with ham, fried egg, housemade crab cake, hollandaise, and tarragon. Served with cheese grits.” Another aside, the cheese grits hit that “awesome” category too.
Lots of choices. It’s the place where you can’t wait to go back and try the (fill in the blank).

From Myths to Facts: Dr. Kevin Woods on Colon Cancer Prevention
March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month—a perfect time to prioritize your health and debunk myths about colorectal cancer. As the third-most common cancer among men and women in the United States, early detection through screening is key to improving survival rates and outcomes.
Myth: Preventing Colorectal Cancer Isn’t Possible
When detected early and treated appropriately, colorectal cancer has an approximately 90 percent five-year survival rate. Several factors may contribute to the development of colorectal cancer, and some are beyond our control. But others we can change, including:
Poor eating habits
Lack of exercise or obesity
History of, or current, tobacco use
Empowering yourself with this kind of information may help you and your doctor develop a plan to reduce your risk of getting colorectal cancer.
Myth: Screening Is Only Necessary with Symptoms
While colorectal cancer symptoms are strong indicators that a checkup is needed, screening may find precancerous colon polyps that may be removed before becoming cancerous or causing symptoms.
Talk to your physician if you are experiencing any of these symptoms:
Rectal bleeding, either bright or dark red in color
Narrow stools or change in stool size
Tenesmus, or the feeling that you have to empty your bowel but nothing passes
Anemia caused by iron deficiency
Persistent abdominal pain
Unexplained weight loss
Why Choose a Colonoscopy?
A colonoscopy may sometimes intimidate patients, but the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy considers it the gold standard of colorectal cancer screening methods for its ability to view the entire colon and both detect and remove polyps in the same procedure. Its ability to remove polyps before they turn into cancer differentiates colonoscopies from other screening methods as the only test that may help prevent colorectal cancer.
Other less-invasive methods for identifying abnormalities include stool DNA tests and visual exams that use X-ray imaging. While these procedures are adequate screening options for many people, they must be performed more frequently and may miss polyps that would otherwise be identified during a colonoscopy. For this reason, my colleagues and I strongly encourage patients to speak with their physicians about screening options and prioritize colonoscopies, particularly if they have risk factors such as family history of colorectal cancer.
Who Should Get Screened?
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends regular screenings starting at age 45 for most people. If you’re at higher risk due to obesity, family history, or being part of an underserved group, you may need to start earlier.
City of Hope is here to help you stay on top of your health. Don’t let myths or misconceptions stand in the way of prevention.
Schedule your screening today and take the first step toward a healthier future.
