Notes from Perry Street

The Little Black Dress and I had just plopped down on the sofa for a little, as teens say now, “Netflix and Chill.”

The difference between that phrase and reality, at least in our situation, was we really were going to watch something on Netflix. And the “chill” involved a nice chardonnay.

Anyhow, I turn on/stream/upload/ whatever one does to get Netflix going. Instead of getting to my “home screen,” a message pops up. As near as I can recall, it is something along the lines that “this television” (being the one we are watching), does not appear to be part of the Home Network.

That gave me pause. I follow the online instructions and Netflix again tells me I am not part of the network. I again pause, thinking - this is my home, this is my television, this is my “Netflix.” Well, okay, all that is true except, apparently, the Netflix part.

I do what any guy in his sixties would do …

“Hey dad, what’s up?” The Eldest says after picking up my call.

“Netflix is telling me I am not part of the ‘home network.’ Oh … and why is the account in your name?” I responded.

“I just did that when we set it up,” he responded. I then proceed to point out that when he “set it up,” he was living at home when he wasn’t at college. He is now in Texas with a new wife. Basically, he took the Netflix account with him … BUT … I am the one paying for it.

Make sense? I mean it makes sense what happened, but I don’t think it makes sense that he gets to take our account, the one I am paying for, and just make it his own.

“Well, I will take photos of the screens so you can see what you all had saved and are watching when I get back,” Caleb, that would be the Eldest said. “Listen, love you, gotta go get ready.”

An aside, technology is pretty amazing, like how your son can essentially steal your Netflix account. Furthermore, he and I were having that conversation while I was in Newnan and he was at Fort Irwin in California, sitting on his tank getting ready for war games. Since he wouldn’t be back for three weeks or so, we bit the proverbial bullet and got a John and Corby Netflix account. Our very own. A clean slate so to speak. And that is exactly what I mean, because when we signed on, there was no “continue watching for John,” “because you watched …” “your saved shows” and so on. A clean slate, literally. Nothing showed up. How often do we get a clean slate? How often do we desperately wish for one? Take them when you can. They are a rare gift. It is July. The month we celebrate our nation’s independence. So between the hotdogs, hamburgers, cook outs, picnics and adults blowing off their fingers after one too many “watch this, hold my beer,” please take a moment to thank that someone you know who serves or did in our nation’s military.

They are the reason we have a 4th. And that goes for you too, Caleb. Until next time.

Coweta County 911/EMA announces creation of Logan’s Law Database

From Coweta County Press Release

Coweta County 911/Emergency Management Agency (EMA) in partnership with the Georgia Emergency Communications Authority (GECA), announces the creation of Logan’s Law database, beginning July 1, 2023.

This feature will help 9-1-1 operators to alert first responders that there are individuals in the home who may have special needs.

“In an emergency, safety is always a primary concern,” said Michael Terrell, 911/EMA Director.

“We are encouraging all Coweta County residents to call and register your family member who may have a special need into our database.”

This feature helps Coweta County 911/EMA:

• Respond more compassionately once dispatched

• Identify any triggers that may be overwhelming to an individual

• Assist first responders in knowing who or what to look for

• Promote cost efficiency by providing the most appropriate response

• Reducing burden on law enforcement, public health and other safety resources

For more information or to fill out the form, please visit the 911 Department page on www.coweta.ga.us or contact them by dialing 770-254-5809.

Other improvements include the main entrance stairs being repaired by city crews and the addition of beautiful landscaping with lights, decorative fencing, retaining wall, pavers, and ornate benches.

Featured artist this month is Rylee Banks

Here’s Rylee’s bio from her website ryleebanks.com

Follow her on social media and YouTube

*Catch her show at ABIDE Brewery July 8th at 2 p.m. and many others throughout the month.

Hey, y’all! My name is Rylee Banks and I am eighteen years old. I was born and raised in the beautiful state of Georgia. Growing up, I have always had a heart for music. Ever since I could talk, singing has just been a part of me. I started vocal lessons at the age of six and haven’t stopped since! When I was thirteen years old, I decided I wanted to teach myself how to play the guitar, so that’s exactly what I did! It has been my dream to write, record, and perform my own music ever since I was a little girl. God has continued to guide me every step of the way, and now, here I am, playing shows locally, writing and recording music, worshiping on the praise team at my church, and chasing my dreams! Without God, none of this would be possible, and there is no way I would be where I am today. If I could give you any advice, it would be to stand strong in your faith and to never give up!

Mr. Personality Newnan’s Goodwill Ambassador

July: The highlight for this month is Independence Day, truly a good day to celebrate and to fully appreciate. I noticed that the Market days of each month is growing and expanding with both vendors and visitors from all over the state and other places as well.

I have been spending much of my time at the A. Mitchell Powell Library located on Hospital Road, Phone: 770-253-3625. I am drawn to the section of books that have been donated and are on sale. I have been upgrading my own personal library of books of wisdom in this manner, many amazing finds such as the copies of vintage National Geographic magazines. If you are a book-lover, come check out the donated section, tell them Mr. Personality sent you. Another way you can borrow books is from Coweta F.O.R.C.E

FRANK BARRON Associate Broker 770-231-9535 FrankB@LindseysRealtors.com

located on 36 Salbide Avenue, Phone: 678-633-5688. Highly trained people provide recovery support services for individuals and family members impacted by addiction. Coweta F.O.R.C.E. is a great place to donate books as well as bottled waters, soft drinks, and snacks. Stop by and ask how you can help your community services that are dedicated to helping others.

I have become aware we all tend to create our daily life through how we speak to ourselves. It is mostly a simple matter of what percentage of self talk is positive or negative that shall determine a positive or negative experience. I used to speak mostly negative messages about myself that I saw taught since childhood, negative messages that were other people’s opinions and mostly were true.

Since my awakening in spirit, the knowledge that I am not my flesh and blood body, but am truly a spirit. A god-spark locked within this “meat suit.” I have, through my books of wisdom, discovered that I can choose my thoughts, words, and deeds through the way I choose to speak about myself.

I am indeed a spiritual being having a human experience, not vice versa. I wanted to include a short essay on self-talk each month, as many of my kindred spirits often speak only the negative messages about themselves and are simply beating themselves up. The same way I spent much of my life doing.

1948-2023

“Serving All of Newnan and Coweta County Since 1948” www.LindseysRealtors.com

And now, The Book of the Month which supports my self-talk essay. Truly a book of wisdom in every sense of the word. This book is titled “The Voice of Knowledge” by Don Miguel Ruiz. I recommend this book with all my heart. (1) The contents from the very first page to the very last is indeed a spiritual truth. The author speaking of his own childhood experiences so spoke of my own, as if he had been a fly on the wall at the time. (2) The truth is indeed truly a heartfelt experience without words. The author draws a vivid and clear example of how we tend to abuse ourselves and others through lies we have been taught since childhood. Lies such as “I am stupid,” a “failure,” “will never amount to anything,” and other lies told to cause guilt, shame, and other mental pain. (3) The book contains the truth on how to recover from such negative experiences.

This very book expresses what we each know within ourselves that is indeed true. Read this book and free yourself from your negative self-talk. The sense of truth and freedom experienced will have you in a constant state of euphoria. I know this because I am experiencing such freedom in ways beyond words. Stop living the lies that you are not good enough.

Until next time, Peace, Love, and Much Respect

Your friend Mr. Personality 

The Journey

Caregivers of Excellence

Laughter is the answer

Paper readers, have you ever embarrassed yourself in the moment, or looked back at something you didn’t think anything of … and became embarrassed about your actions or behaviors? Maybe it was something fully in your control that you chose to do, or something seemingly out of your control? Well I’m here to tell you, we’ve all been there.

Sometimes it is hard to move on from that interaction or faux pas, but guess what? There’s literally nothing you can do to change something that happened in the past. If you hurt someone’s feelings or did something inappropriate, (and I’ve been there too) obviously a sincere apology is in order – but other than that, it’s best we figure out how to move on and not stew on it.

Trust me when I say I have OODLES of experience in this arena. I’ve been on stage in front of 1,000 people and said something that I thought was funny about my friend that hurt her feelings. I was just joking like we normally do, but I don’t normally do that in front of an audience quite that size. I looked like a jerk in front of a ton of people and hurt my friend which was never my intention.

I have run several public events, spoke in front of a thousand people, spoken in videos, have been board chair for several organizations and all sorts of things. I know that if I’m prepared, I’m good. If I’m not – hang on for the ride because there’s going to be some major turbulence!! Recently during a local luncheon, I rattled off like I’ve never stood in front of a room and talked to people before. I wasn’t prepared. I did it to myself. I can make all the excuses in the world, but at the end of the day, I need to own it and move on.

Throughout my multitudes of embarrassing moments (mostly self-inflicted), I’ve discovered how beneficial it is to laugh at myself. I think about how I could have done better, and then I laugh at how silly I was. Like, at this last speech – I literally stuttered three times trying to get the name of the organization I served as board chair for a year out of my mouth. I wanted someone to throw something at me, or to pass out in front of the room – it was horrible. But guess what? I didn’t die. I didn’t hurt anyone else. I just looked like it was the first time I’ve ever talked in front of a room full of people. So now when I get up in front of a room full of people and don’t feel prepared or if I am nervous, I tell them about the disaster that was that speech. It loosens the room up, it relaxes me …. and it’s go time! There are multiple studies that show that laughter has a vast range of positive physiological and psychological outcomes. If you can train your mindset to be playful, life will be so much easier. It allows you to be kinder to yourself and see the humor in your Journey. And, it is just for you … whether you share your reflections with others or not.

“Laugh loudly, laugh often, and most importantly, laugh at yourself.” – Chelsea Handler

Piedmont NEWNAN

Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness Center Provides Healing and Support to Those Affected by Cancer

been diagnosed with cancer at any point in their journey.

The program focuses on Five Pillars of Wellness – Exercise, Nutrition, Creativity, Education, and Relaxation.

Piedmont Newnan Celebrates Topping Out on New South Tower

Let’s Create Together, a crafting class. Everything’s Gone to Pot, a creative planting class, as well as One Hour Drummer, an African drumming class held during the lunch hour, are great opportunities to focus on interesting new hobbies.

Education is provided through a Let’s Talk series, led by Margarette Coleman, and the Oncology Support Group led by Oncology Social Worker, Shannon Wooten. Both classes give people a chance to discuss various topics in a group setting and form new networks of support.

Piedmont Newnan Hospital recently celebrated the topping out of its new South Tower. The first phase of this $65 million expansion project will add 80,000 square feet and 50 new patient beds. It will consist of three levels that will connect at the south side of the hospital and the structure is designed to support five future additional floors.

Hospital staff and community members gathered for a topping out ceremony to celebrate this significant milestone. The final beam, which was signed by hospital staff, physicians and volunteers the week leading up to the ceremony, was hoisted by the tower crane into place during the event.

Exercise is key to regaining strength after cancer. “We offer a variety of exercise classes that can be modified to a person’s unique abilities,” said Jennifer Palmer, Program Coordinator. “In-person classes include Balance & Flex, Chair Yoga, Exercise Is Medicine, Exercising to the Oldies, and Gentle Pilates. We also offer Gentle Yoga via ZOOM two evenings per week.”

Relaxation is the goal of the center’s two most popular services –Massage and Reflexology. Offered as thirty-minute appointments, both services are great ways to reduce anxiety and depression.

“The ultimate goal of our program is to offer a safe space for cancer survivors, and those still in treatment, to heal mentally and emotionally,” said Palmer. “The friendships made here are an important part of the journey to wellness, and we encourage the social connections that easily form here.”

The Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness program is funded by individual donations, as well as proceeds from our annual Piedmont Newnan Soiree. In 2022, the second annual Soiree raised over $160,000 for our program and other oncology services.

“This is a significant milestone in the construction of the new South Tower that will open next spring. We’re very excited to be celebrating this with our community,” said Piedmont Newnan Chief Operating Officer (COO) Vicki Kaiser. “We appreciate everyone who joined us to celebrate the last beam being placed and we are excited for the completion of this much needed expansion to our hospital’s campus.”

As a top destination for care in south Atlanta, this project is necessary to keep up with Coweta County’s fast-paced growth and to continue to provide high-quality, patient-centered care close to home for the county’s residents, especially after the increase in volumes since the opening of the new interchange at Interstate 85 and Poplar Road in 2019.

Nutrition is the focus of the center’s two monthly cooking classes. Chef Nancy Waldeck hosts Taste & Savor, which focuses on easy, healthy and delicious meals that can be duplicated at home. Chef Michael Laidlaw shares plant-based recipes and illustrates how nutritious a vegan menu can be.

Nutrition is also the focus of the center’s in-house dietitian, Andrea Swartz. Swartz meets privately with cancer patients by appointment to discuss their changing dietary needs during their cancer journey.

The Piedmont Newnan Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness program currently offers eighteen classes and services.

“One of our biggest challenges is spreading the word about our amazing space and all the programs we offer here,” said Palmer.

“If you or someone you know has ever been diagnosed with cancer, please let them know about us.”

Piedmont Newnan’s Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness Program celebrated National Cancer Survivor Day this year with a globally-themed open house. On Wednesday, June 7, approximately fifty cancer survivors attended the event which included demonstrations, wellness services and food from around the world.

“This inaugural celebration was a huge success, and we are already looking forward to making it even bigger and better next year!” said Palmer.

The hospital has previously expanded the current facility, growing from 136-bed to 167-bed facility, but remains full. The South Tower project, which broke ground in October, will add 50 additional beds, which includes the intent to continue to build additional floors in future phases, and is the most significant investment Piedmont has made in Coweta County since building this new hospital on Poplar Road in 2012. Since opening the new hospital on Poplar Road, Piedmont has invested almost $300 million in capital here at Newnan, including the $65 million budgeted for this expansion.

Construction is estimated to be completed in Spring 2024. Once complete, the hospital’s capacity will increase from its current licensed bed count of 167 to 217 licensed beds.

“We’re very grateful for the support of our community during this construction project,” said Kaiser. “The Piedmont Newnan team is

looking forward to continuing serve the healthcare needs of those in Coweta and surrounding communities through this new addition to our hospital.”

The Film Fix … Streaming Edition

Capsule Reviews … New Rating System - A “Fix" is recommended with a rating between 6 and 10! a “No Fix” with ratings of 1 to 5 isn’t. http://dailyfilmfix.com/

In Theaters:

■ Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (in theaters now) –l Fix Rating 7/10 — Onto the current theatrical landscape littered with comic book, costume-wearing supers, how can an aging grandfather with a whip, knowledge of the ancient world, and an extraordinary amount of luck (not all of it good) hope to compete?

Director James Mangold’s answer is to introduce the possibility of going back in time. Still, instead of some trite multiverse contrivance, he relies on the timeless Harrison Ford, a spry and capable 79-yearold movie star. In reprising the iconic Indiana Jones character he’s played for over 40 years, Ford proves he’s still got it.

But if Harrison Ford is the anchor of the franchise as a whole, this installment’s secret weapon is actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The three-time Emmy winner for her endlessly rewatchable “Fleabag” injects comic energy into the role of Helena, Indy’s adventurous goddaughter.

“Dial of Destiny” continues the supernatural bent of the series, but this time takes those touches almost to excess. Of course, nothing could likely top the ridiculous flying saucer featured in the weakest of the series, 2008’s wildly over-the-top “The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” but this script, penned by Jez and John-Henry Butterworth with help from David Koepp, resolves things almost as bombastically. Despite my misgivings, it is impossible not to enjoy revisiting the world of Indiana Jones. And there are lovely callbacks to the former films with set-pieces and characters. Any Indy fan will get misty-eyed during the film’s denouement.

■ Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One – l Fix

Rating 6/10 — If the Indiana Jones era goes out on a heartfelt emotional tone, the Tom Cruise vehicle “Mission: Impossible” shows little signs of slowing down. However, this bloated two-part production demonstrates that not even the “Top Gun” megastar can knock everything out of the park.

This time around, Ethan Hunt and the IMF team are tasked with tracking down a two-part key in hopes of unlocking a mysterious and nefarious artificial intelligence. This mission means that Cruise will show off his running and base-jumping skills. Surprisingly, the much-discussed scene with Hunt driving a motorcycle off a cliff remains impressive, despite most of it being spoiled in a promo video released online.

The story here is utter nonsense. But I liked the film’s central human villain, played by Esai Morales. And adding actor Shea Whigham as a secret agent pursuing Hunt is fresh and fun. MCU star Pom Klementieff makes her series debut as a ruthless killing machine, and many of the franchise’s mainstays return, including Viny Rhames and Simon Pegg.

But the silly leaps in logic and narrative impossibilities will likely leave viewers scratching their heads. “Dead Reckoning Part 1” merely showcases Cruise’s stunt skills as he gives his all to thrill viewers. And for that alone, the film is worth seeing.

■ Talk to Me (July 28) – l Fix Rating 7/10 — With “Talk to Me,” twin filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou, the content creators behind the hugely popular RackaRacka YouTube channel, deliver one of the most frightening horror films of the year. This creeper distributed by A24 (see “Hereditary” and “X”) continues the studio’s commitment to well-made and downright scary pictures that should enthrall hipster viewers.

At its core, “Talk to Me” is an old-fashioned ghost story. The film follows a group of teens that take part in a kind of séance relying on an embalmed hand. The hand said to have once belonged to a powerful medium has been encased in porcelain. When a person grasps it and asks it to talk to them, they see dead people.

But here’s the fun part: if the user beckons the undead to come into them, they become linked to the spirit world. Of course, these spirits are not the friendly and nice ones. And when Mia takes part in the drunken, nightly supernatural exercise, she stays a little longer than is recommended. A spirit resembling her deceased mother visits her and won’t leave.

“Talk to Me” works well in convincing us that the group psychosis that the teens are experiencing is horribly real, and it just might be authentic. It helps that the Philippou twin team is in tune with the key demographic of youngsters (after all, their YouTube channel has 6.7 million subscribers).

The intelligent use of cell phones and the reckless nature of the creatures of social media make the timeless ghost tale contemporary and provocative.

Bluray Spotlight:

■ Graveyard Alive – A Zombie Nurse in Love (now available for purchase) – Optical media is the collector’s format, and it’s good to see that ETR Media and Vinegar Syndrome are releasing Elza Kephart’s clever 2004 zombie picture about a shy nurse named Patsy Powers (Anne Day-Jones) who gets a new lease on life when she becomes a member of the flesh-eating undead. Indie film fans will want this one for the HD transfer and the extras, including a behind-the-scenes booklet with interesting information about the production. “Zombie Nurse” won best cinematography at the 2004 Slamdance Film Festival.

Streaming Selects:

1982: Greatest Geek Year Ever! (series premiere July 8) – Fix Rating 8/10 – – l Fix Rating 8/10 — This love letter to the films that shaped a generation will work for viewers of all ages. 1982 was a remarkable year at the movies, and this documentary assembles an impressive collection of interviews and unique film and behind-thescenes clips to chronicle the ground-breaking 12 months. You’ll gain great insight into “E.T.,” “Star Trek II,” “The Thing,” “Megaforce,” and a whole lot more. This one is highly recommended.

people from different walks of life. The ensemble cast (remember Soderbergh’s Oscar-winner “Traffic”) includes Zazie Beetz, Timothy Olyphant, Claire Danes, Dennis Quaid, and “I’m a Virgo” star Jharrel Jerome, among others.

The Witcher (season 3 streaming now) – Henry Cavill leaves the popular fantasy series with season three. His last turn as Geralt of Rivia puts the future of the series in doubt as “The Hunger Games” star Liam Hemsworth is set to take over. Given Netflix’s relationship with Liam’s brother Chris (see the “Extraction” franchise), the move keeps things in the family, but will fans embrace a new lead?

The Horror of Dolores Roach (series premiere on July 7) – I’m curious about this one primarily because it stars “Six Feet Under” regular Justina Machado, a terrific and underused actress. Since “Roach” is a Blumhouse Television production, you can expect it to bend toward the horror side. Still, this serial killer-infused narrative resembles a comedic satire with scary elements. Machado plays an ex-con who takes a job as a masseuse, and when things go wrong for her, they go bloody wrong.

Theatrical Teasers:

■ Insidious: The Red Door (July 7) – The series returns 10 years after Dalton’s rescue from the The Further.

■ The Miracle Club (July 14) – Laura Linney, Kathy Bates, and Maggie Smith make a pilgrimage to the sacred French town of Lourdes.

■ Oppenheimer (July 21) – Visionary director Christopher Nolan returns with the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer and his race to create the atomic bomb and end WWII. The word is that you have to see it on the big screen and in IMAX.

■ Barbie (July 21) – Margot Robbie plays the title character and is joined by her Ken, played by Ryan Gosling, in this subversive looking take on the famous Mattel doll. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Greta Gerwig directs and co-writes this movie with her husband, Noah Baumbach.

■ Special Ops: Lioness (Season 1 starts on July 23) — Paramount Plus is upping its game with the star-studded military actioner “Special Ops: Lioness.” Reportedly inspired by a real-life CIA program, “Guardians of the Galaxy” star Zoe Saldaña is called upon by her bosses (played by Nicole Kidman and Michael Kelly) to work with a take charge Marine (Laysla De Oliveira) to combat terrorism. Morgan Freeman is also in the cast. Taylor Sheridan (see “Yellowstone”) serves as the series creator.

(formerly HBO Max):

Full Circle (Season 1 starts on July 13) – Director Steven Soderbergh (see the “Magic Mike” franchise and HBO’s “Kimi”) helms all six episodes of this intriguing-looking mystery drama about a botched kidnapping. From what I’ve gathered, an investigation into a kidnapping uncovers a lot more, as the crime somehow connects

■ Haunted Mansion (July 28) – The Disney amusement attraction is again brought to the big screen with an impressive ensemble cast, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Winona Ryder, and Rosario Dawson.

Finally, we celebrate another great summer with our Finale party at the Central Library on July 22. Beginning at 10 a.m., the finale will feature performers, music, food, crafts, games, and our own Coweta Recreation Department will be there with their own fun games and challenges. The party will go on until 2p.m. so come early and hang out!

With the closing of summer programming, I want all parents of young ones from kindergarten on down to know that we will be kicking off another session of the very popular 1000 Books B4 Kindergarten. Many of our young library users and their families have already participated in past sessions but a recent grant is allowing us to reach deeper and bigger. Be on the lookout for information for this great opportunity to read as a family while setting up your child for academic success and good fun. We hope to see you lots in July and beyond!!

Jimmy Bass is director of the Coweta Public Library System. He also plays a mean guitar and sings at local venues.

The Summer Show Goes On

As I sit down to write this, the heat has finally made its presence known here in Coweta County. Here at Coweta Libraries, we have been on fire since the end of May when our summer programming and reading contest began with a mighty boom. We have already hit our participation number for last year, but have plenty more prizes and fun activities planned. So, if you have not signed you or your children up, it is not too late.

The show goes on at all libraries in July as we offer over 125 programs while bringing in the most professional library entertainers working today. Please allow me to give you some examples. Our staffcreated and led programs include STEM and STEAM crafts, Legos, Trivia, Bilingual Story Time, World Adventures, Family Bingo Zone, Colors of Us Art Club, and so much more!

To see dates and times for all events go to our website at www.cowetapubliclibrary.org. Also, we bring in the big guns for July special programs as local and nationally known magician Ken Scott brings his special brand of family entertainment to our Central and Powell branches. In addition, we welcome the always timely drummer, Dave Holland; the enlightening theater of Mr. Damon’s Shadow Puppets, and those swaying ladies known as Mahealani’s Polynesian Dancers.

Did You Know?

• 61% of low-income families do not have a single piece of age-appropriate reading material in their home?

• 1/3rd of Georgia’s children start school unprepared to learn?

• 75% of Georgia’s students who are poor readers in the third grade will remain poor readers in high school?

How Do Books Help?

The more words a child hears, the larger the child’s vocabulary and the larger the child’s vocabulary, the more likely the child will be a proficient reader. However, in order to read with a child, books must be in the home.

Carol Moore, who has served as executive director of The Newnan Centre since, well, there was a Newnan Centre, is exiting stage left after 11 years at the helm. She said she plans to “hang around” Newnan. We want to thank her for making the Centre one of the crown jewels for the city of Newnan. Taking her place, whom Carol calls her “mini me,” is Newnan native Peyton Shelnutt, who has worked with Carol for several years. We wish Peyton continued success. [ [ [
