Out & About

Newnan Carnegie Library held its third Southern LitFest in June (7-8), to the delight of packed crowds and venues. Director Susan Crutchfield said that this event is the largest fundraiser of the year for the Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation. They were excited to partner with the Newnan Cultural Arts Commission this year. “If you attend a Carnegie or Cultural Arts Commission event, it might not have happened without Southern LitFest!” she commented.

The festivities kicked off on Friday night with Hometown Novel Night, Unplugged, where 40 regional authors gathered on the Square, with DJ Alan Ray performing. The kickoff was co-hosted by Hometown Novel Writers Association.

Saturday morning, Newnan Theatre Company’s “Children’s Academy Kids” wrote, designed, and produced an adaptation of Aesop’s Fables for Newnan’s children.

The 2024 theme for Southern LitFest was “Unplugged.”

“Based on the theme, we had a couple of key authors we wanted to invite and then we found others that fit the theme,” said Crutchfield. This year’s LitFest authors converged where literature, nature, and art intersect:

Chattahoochee’s First Riverkeeper Sally Bethea

What to Do, See and Eat Southern LitFest 2024: Where Literature, Nature and Art Intersect

Sally Bethea chronicled some of her tales from her book Keeping the Chattahoochee. There was a time, not long ago, when our very own Chattahoochee River was so polluted, no one would get near it. Bethea and the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper organization successfully took the City of Atlanta to court in the mid 90s, and worked with a bipartisan group of Atlanta leaders (including Shirley Franklin and Newt Gingrich) to make improvements.

She recounted the story of Junior Errington, of Franklin, GA, who remembered when he could drink from a crystal clean Chattahoochee of yesteryear. In her book, she wanted to tell the story of the river, but also of the people who live in the watershed.

Gwen Roland, author of Atchafalaya Houseboat: My Years in the Louisiana Swamp

Roland regaled the audience with stories of what her life off the grid was like in the 70s. Roland abandoned her doctorate when she felt it wasn’t her calling, and decided to live off the land in Louisiana’s Atchafalaya River Basin Swamp. She and her then-

partner Calvin Voisin built a houseboat and lived there for 8 years, with no running water or electricity.

To support themselves, she told the audience about her jobs as a writer, fishing for crawfish, and welding in the oil fields, and got a good laugh at their unsuccessful attempts at a willow furniture business. Her connection to nature allowed her to thrive, while her award-winning book has been an invaluable resource for others who choose to live off the grid.

C.C. Lockwood, internationally acclaimed wildlife photographer Lockwood had heard about Roland living in the Louisiana swamp, and traveled there to meet her and take photos. The photos, included in Roland’s book, also appeared in National Geographic, bringing him, Roland, and Voisin unexpected fame. They appeared again later in National Geographic’s Best 100. Lockwood also won the Ansel Adams Award for Conservation Photography, and has been featured in the Smithsonian.

Sean Dietrich, aka Sean of the South (co-hosted by the Newnan Cultural Arts Commission)

The grande finale of LitFest, Sean Dietrich entertained a full Wadsworth Auditorium with southern stories and music. An accomplished writer and musician, Sean played the guitar, banjo, fiddle, and the accordion (“today, accordionplaying ranks on the ‘lameness scale’ somewhere between identity-theft and dentistry,” said Sean.) Despite the “lameness”, his performance earned him an enthusiastic standing ovation from the crowd.

Dietrich has written 15 books, created the Sean of the South podcast, and has contributed to Newsweek, Southern Living, Reader’s Digest, Garden and Gun, and more.

Thank You

Big thank you to our Sponsors and Partners for their support of the Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation’s 2024 Southern LitFest “Unplugged” on June 7 & 8. We could not have done it without your help and partnership.

Special thank you to Nick Ramey of
Special thank you to The Paper / The Weekly and the Winters Family for your support.

Don’t Store Your Winter Clothes Until You Do This!

Summer is all but here. If you haven’t already, it’s time to store winter items.

Before storing heavy sweaters, coats, and blankets, ensure they’re thoroughly cleaned.

Winter wear accumulates dirt, oils, and sweat, which can cause odors, attract pests, and damage fabrics if stored uncleaned.

Imagine finding your favorite wool sweater musty and motheaten next winter. Properly washing and dry-cleaning items before storage preserves their quality and extends their lifespan. Be certain to store items in breathable sealed bags and acid-free tissue paper.

We have both should you need them or we can clean and store everything for you in our climate-controlled space.

Taking these steps ensures your winter essentials will be fresh, clean, and ready to keep you warm when the cold weather returns.

Notes from Perry Street

It was roughly a decade ago when Corby, my wife affectionately known as The Little Black Dress, and I met at Alan Jackson’s office. We are talking about the excellent local attorney, not the singer.

We were there to sign papers to buy “The Coweta Shopper” from Joe Williams. It was Thanksgiving Eve, and we joked that everyone had something to be thankful for - namely we got a newspaper, and Joe got out of one. If you are in the business, you understand.

We soon changed the name to “The Shopper,” primarily because we wanted to expand it outside of Coweta County. We also started adding more local content.

A couple of years ago, we changed “The Shopper” to “The Weekly.” One reason showed up in our mailbox. A coupon pamphlet called “theshopper.net” appeared out of nowhere. People started emailing and calling us, asking if it was ours. It’s not. We are a newspaper, the other is an advertising pamphlet.

We also wanted to try something new and went with “The Weekly.” We even came up with a different way to fold the newspaper. “The Weekly,” to be fair, was a good idea that just fell flat.

Think about “New Coke.”

People just didn’t take hold of the name change.

“So you don’t have “The Shopper” anymore”

Yes, it’s just called “The Weekly.”

“So it’s new?”

“Same content, different name.”

“Uh huh.”

We also started “The Paper,” a monthly filled with what “to see, eat and do.” Live music, local columnists and artists, food, movies, calendars of anything and everything, a strong non-profit focus and lots more.

From 1,500 copies to 10,000 today, “The Paper” is now in three counties at more than 125 locations. Print is still very powerful.

It’s also the publication we thought “The Shopper,” er, “The Weekly,” would be. So instead of fighting how things are working out, we decided to go back to our roots. And those roots date back to 1989.

The

PAPER

The ultimate “give me something to do publication” focusing on food, live music, special events and great columnists. Best “bang for your buck” for hitting a large area with information and positive stories.

Printed on Hi-brite. (heavier newsprint) 24-36 pages. Full color is included for free. Also available in E-Edition format.

Distribution is 10,000. Goes out the first week of the month. Of that, 4,000 is direct mailed to Arbor Springs, Lake Redwine, Newnan Country Club, Summer Grove and White Oak subdivisions. The remaining 6,000 are distributed all over the area at more than 125 locations across three counties.

The COWETA S HOPPER

The Coweta Shopper is the perfect publication for those wanting to advertise in a specific targeted part of Coweta.

Printed on newsprint. 16-32 pages. Full color is included for free.

Also available in E-Edition format.

Distributed the second, third and fourth weeks of each month. Each week, the publication goes to a different area based on zip codes.

Our goal is 7,500 direct mailed each week.

Since 1989, The Coweta Shopper … always filled with positive stories, great columns, and events. wintersmedia.net info@wintersmedia.net : @wintersmediapublishing : @wintersmediapublishing

The Bookmark Coweta Libraries: Hotter than July

received rave reviews while burning up the Billboard charts.

All of us at the Coweta Library System are feeling pretty hot too as we blow up our previous circulation records and welcome outstanding entertainers throughout July. This will lead to the always popular Summer Reading Challenge Finale Party at the Central Library on July 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is not too late to sign up for our Summer Reading program; we are still welcoming readers and giving out prizes. Our previous summer sign-up numbers have been overrun by happy readers… come join the crowd!

So, we hit July and boy, can it be hotter in every sense of the word?? The show will go on at all libraries as we offer over 90 programs in July alone while bringing in the most professional library entertainers working today. Please allow me to give you some examples. Our staffcreated and led programs include Sightseeing Story Time at Grantville, Around the World in 49 Days at Powell, Young Explorers STEM at Central Library, and STEAM Wednesdays at Senoia Library. Go to our website at www.cowetapubliclibrary.org for all events to see dates and times.

Also, we bring in the big guns for July special programs as local and nationally known magician Ken Scott brings his special brand of family entertainment to our Central and Powell branches. We welcome the always on time Dave Holland and his Drumming Up Stories program, and we go back in time with the Lee Bryan Puppets presents Niko as Doctor Dinosaur. We will have yoga, cooking shows, Bingo, a Bubblepalooza Foam party, and some great art and crafts programs. You can find all the pertinent info on our website.

Finally, we will tie the summer programming up in a big red bow with our Finale Friday party at the Central Library on July 20. Beginning at 10 o’clock, the finale will feature performers, music, food, sweets, crafts, and our own Coweta Recreation Department will be there with fun games and challenges. We will welcome Ron Anglin, juggler extraordinaire, and the always awesome Cricket’s Petting Zoo. There will be prizes as we celebrate our winning readers. As Stevie himself would say, July is going to be a Master Blaster!!

We hope to see you lots in July!

Jimmy Bass is director of the Coweta Public Library System. He also plays a mean guitar and sings at local venues. n

Did You Know?

• 61% of low-income families do not have a single piece of ageappropriate reading material in their home?

• 1/3rd of Georgia’s children start school unprepared to learn?

• 75% of Georgia’s students who are poor readers in the third grade will remain poor readers in high school?

How Do Books Help?

The more words a child hears, the larger the child’s vocabulary and the larger the child’s vocabulary, the more likely the child will be a proficient reader. However, in order to read with a child, books must be in the home.

Reading at least 15 minutes daily with your child can drastically improve their language and academics.

The Coweta County Ferst Foundation mission is to provide a free monthly age-appropriate book for every child under the age of five in Coweta County. Visit our website for more information: cowetaferst.org

The MUSIC … Local&Live

Newnan‘s Kris Youmans Band has a unique rootsy, country sound with a bit of Western swing that makes them a perfect edition to GPB’s Georgia’s Country Connection series at GPB.org/Country.

We are fortunate she writes The Music column for us at The Paper.

“Music gives a soul to the Universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” …Plato

Featured Artist … Ray Shavers

Ray Shavers is a native of Newnan. When people ask him if he’s lived here all his life, he always says “Well no, not yet” and he laughs.

Ray is a songwriter who began writing songs when he was 15. His roots are traditional country, but his songs are influenced by a variety of genres. Every song he writes has its own unique sound, so no two songs are alike.

Ray has performed his songs in venues, at fairgrounds, amphitheaters and has been the opening act for several country artists such as John Anderson, John Michael Montgomery, LeRoy Parnell, Craig Morgan and Mark Wills.

The most rewarding thing he’s experienced is recording his original music at Omni Sound Studio with Award winning producer - Bill McDermont. Bill has produced major artists such as Carrie Underwood, Lady A, Travis Tritt, Blake Shelton and many more successful country music stars.

Ray intended to record his songs to pitch to other artists, but his producer recommended that he perform them on his own, saying that Ray is an outstanding songwriter and performer. He said it is rare to have a writer who is a multi-instrumentalist who can write and arrange his songs without a cowriter or any help from more seasoned writers.

Ray’s wife, Rebecca Shavers, is a vocalist who is no stranger to the studio or stage. She sings harmony on Ray’s songs and sang several harmony parts on Ray’s Nashville project. The pair have been performing together for over ten years, and their chemistry and harmony are magical.

Ray has assembled a very talented band of regional musicians who have been rehearsing to prepare a real showcase of Ray’s original music. You’ll hear a really tight band with steel guitar, banjo, and sax added to the mix to duplicate the Nashville sound on Ray’s Country Livin CD.

The showcase/concert will be held at The Wadsworth Auditorium on August 17 at 7 pm. Call Rebecca Shavers at 678-603-5354 for ticket info. Tickets are $20, and while seating is limited, there are no bad seats in the historic Wadsworth Auditorium.

“We are making every effort to seat family and friends together,” Rebecca said about the venue. We want people to enjoy real country music, in a beautiful venue where it’s big enough to really put on a show but small enough to feel like an intimate songwriter experience,” said Ray.

So put on your boots and cowboy hats and come hear some real country music from a real country songwriter!”

August 17th, 7p.m. at Wadsworth Auditorium

The Featured Joint

Everyone has their “go-to” place to eat. It might be with linen tablecloths and waiters in ties, or where you throw peanuts on the floor and carve your initials in the wooden tables. Whatever and wherever, it’s your “joint.” This month’s featured joint is …

The Cozy Bistro

I decided to take the Middle SON of Thunder on our latest foray into the culinary delights of Coweta County. Seth, as he is also called, is the one who will try something different. His brothers question his choices sometimes, but Seth has a knack for finding something unusual.

So The Cozy Bistro was a perfect place. It’s a new Vietnamese restaurant on Bullsboro Drive. And of course it has Pho, the ultimate Vietnamese meat and rice noodle soup. It was Anthony Bourdain’s favorite dish.

Youngest SON of Thunder, the culinary expert of the family, said Pho is pronounced “fuh” and not “foh.” Whatever … let’s get on to the food.

First, get the crispy egg rolls. As in do not pass “Go,” do not collect $200. Just order them with their signature sauce. Lord help us. Seth got the “foh” or “fuh” or whatever. I snuck a bite of a meatball in the soup and that was delicious. Seth gave the broth high marks.

For me, it was the Spicy Lemongrass Chicken Rice Plate that had that little red chili pepper next to the description in the menu. That signifies a “hot” or “spicy” dish as most know. And I know that symbol in an Asian restaurant means exactlly what it implies. It was one of those dishes where you sweat on the top of your head. And those are the best spicy dishes.

Next time its the Crispy Chicken Rice Plate or the Chicken Curry for me. The owners are wonderful and always suggesting something new. As their motto states, “Cozy Up To Vietnamese Flavor!”

NICU Celebration Reunites Families and Staff at Piedmont Newnan

Piedmont Newnan Hospital recently hosted a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) family reunion, where NICU graduates and their families were invited to reunite with the nurses, staff members, and other families who helped them through their time at the hospital.

“Babies in the NICU are with us anywhere from a few days to months, so we get to know the families as they come in each day to visit their baby and check their progress,” said Ashley Maxwell, Director of Women’s Services at Piedmont Newnan. “The reunion is a fun way for the families and staff to see each other again and celebrate how far all these babies have come since being in the NICU.”

Babies born prematurely or before 37 weeks of pregnancy, who have a low birth weight, or who have a medical condition that requires special care are admitted to Piedmont Newnan’s Level III NICU, which opened in 2015, where they are treated by neonatologists and nurses with advanced training in NICU care.

This year’s picnic was held on Bistro Lawn at Piedmont Newnan, and families enjoyed balloons, a bounce house, crafts, and a photobooth.

“For some families who attended, it has only been a few months since they were in the NICU, but for others, it has been a few years, with our first NICU baby now being 9 years old,” said Maxwell. “Seeing some of our first families and new families getting to meet one another and staff getting to visit with the babies they helped care for – it was a special time for everyone.”

Piedmont Newnan opened its Level III NICU in 2015 to provide care to our communities smallest and most critical babies close to home. The NICU provides comprehensive care for infants, providing advanced respiratory support and advanced imaging.

Men’s Health Month: Screenings Can Help Prevent Negative Health Trends

June was Men’s Health Month. Did you miss it?

We want to remind you it is crucial to highlight the important role regular health screenings can play in long-term health outcomes in men.

With many diseases or illnesses, symptoms don’t occur until later stages – often when they create much more serious health issues and are more difficult to treat. That’s why it’s important to get regular screenings and physicals to catch chronic diseases before they occur.

A 2022 Cleveland Clinic survey of 1,000 men in the U.S. revealed that 55% of men say they don’t get regular health screenings. The National Library of Medicine research also suggests that men are less likely than women to go to a doctor for checkups, and are more likely to develop a chronic disease and illness.

“Men younger than 45 or 50 usually don’t come in for an annual check up on their own,” said Dr. Matthew Roberts, D.O., a Piedmont primary care physician in Newnan. “Typically someonea spouse, fiancé, or a significant other, or something like their work, makes them come in. If they do come in for something quick, like joint pain, a head cold, et cetera, I always encourage them to schedule an annual physical before they leave the office. Most insurance plans cover that appointment and the accompanying labs once a year. I tell people that you’ve already paid for it, so you might as well do it.”

During these visits, doctors can check blood pressure, and perform blood sugar tests and cholesterol tests –all of which are important in preventing and identifying potential diseases or illnesses, such as diabetes and heart disease – the top cause of death in men (and women).

“I do not agree with the thought that ‘I feel fine – so why do I need a physical?’ because ‘feeling fine’ is not proof that there isn’t something silent developing,” says Dr. Roberts. “We call high blood pressure ‘the silent killer’ for that very reason, and it’s not just high blood pressure that will sneak up on you. Diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease are all issues that you typically won’t know about until they are a bigger problem.”

While various screenings are available for a variety of conditions or diseases, below are a few recommendations for screening for men:

• Lung cancer screening is recommended annually for adults aged 50 to 80 years who have a 20 pack-year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years.

• Colon cancer screening is recommended from age 45 to 75. The way this is done and the frequency of the screenings will depend on factors that you can discuss with your primary care physician at an Annual Physical.

• Prostate cancer screening The recommendations are undergoing some review right now; however, Dr. Roberts currently does a PSA (prostate blood test) on men age 45 and older. “The PSA is a simple blood test that can tell me if there’s a possible problem. If the PSA comes back high, I’ll review the options for follow up care with the patient and help them make an informed decision about what to do next.”

Dr. Roberts said men often have anxiety and hesitance with some of these exams because of the physical nature, but wants to emphasize that there are often other testing options available.

“I rarely preform a digital rectal exam. Patients find that portion of the exam very invasive and uncomfortable, and men will avoid going to the doctor entirely just because they feel that’s what’s going to happen at their Annual. A rectal exam may be recommended later on if the PSA is high, but usually I let the urologists decide that.”

For more information on screenings visit piedmont.org/cancer or call 770.400.4020 and for more information about Piedmont Cancer Wellness, including a monthly program calendar, visit piedmontcancerwellness.org.

Maybe you have heard, maybe you have not. Earlier this year, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) reached an agreement to resolve nationwide claims brought by home sellers. This agreement will resolve claims against NAR, over one million NAR members, all state and local Realtor associations, association-owned multiple listing systems (MLS) and brokerages with a transaction volume of $2 billion or less in 2022. The settlement makes clear that NAR continues to deny any wrongdoing in connection with the MLS cooperative compensation model that was introduced in the 1990s in response to calls from consumer protection advocates for buyer representation (NAR). NAR is set to pay $418 million over approximately four years as part of the agreement.

Got questions?

So, what caused these lawsuits to occur? Essentially, home sellers that filed these lawsuits felt deceived by Realtors regarding commission and compensation. Some home sellers were told they must provide a commission to the buyers’ agents. Other home sellers were not told how much the buyers’ agent was being paid for a cooperative deal. As you might imagine, other similar and copycat lawsuits have been filed. For those that filed suits, compensation and commission were not clearly conveyed to sellers and buyers. Communication and disclosure are essential and will be moving forward.

The commission is and always has been negotiable. While six percent commission is popular as a seller, it is not “required.” We see

commissions all over the board here in Coweta County and across different types of real estate: residential, commercial, land, and industrial. Each brokerage has their own policy on commission as well. Your Realtor should be having an open conversation with you regarding commission and cooperative deals, as well as compensating a buyers’ agent.

Moving forward, the MLS’s will not be able to show a cooperative commission for a buyers’ agent. The buyers’ representative will need to call the sellers’ agent to discover if the seller is offering a commission to the buyers’ agent. What if the seller does not offer a commission?

In order to view a property with a Realtor moving forward, a buyer will need to have a signed buyer brokerage agreement that specifically dictates the compensation a buyers’ representative will receive, as well as who will be paying the buyers’ Realtor. Will the buyer or seller be responsible for paying the buyers’ agent? The buyer paying for their agent is actually common practice in commercial, industrial and large land deals/development.

This shake-up in the real estate industry has created a lot of controversy and worry. It will cause some changes for sure. Most of the changes are good in my opinion. It is a shame and not right that some agents deceived the public, but there is an opportunity for the good Realtors to do right. I believe the good Realtors will rise to the top moving forward and the public will have a better understanding of their real estate transaction.

Capsule Reviews … New Rating System - A “Fix" is recommended with a rating between 6 and 10! a “No Fix” with ratings of 1 to 5 isn’t. http://dailyfilmfix.com/

Jonathan W. Hickman is an entertainment attorney, filmmaker, college professor, and novelist. More about Jonathan can be found by visiting http://filmproductionlaw.com/

A Quiet Place: Day One (now playing) – l Fix Rating 6/10 – The third installment in the blockbuster “A Quiet Place” franchise focuses less on the entertaining monster movie aspects and more on the potentially compelling human element than the previous two entries.

“Day One” is set in New York City in the hours before the invasion from outer space. Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o is Samira, a cancer patient living her last days at a hospice. When the monster chaos ensues, Samira, a poet whose father was a jazz pianist, is determined to return to a club in Harlem where her father performed. Along the way, she picks up shellshocked English law student Eric (“Stranger Things” alum Joseph Quinn).

By casting the film’s protagonist as a terminally ill character, director Michael Sarnoski (see 2021’s excellent “Pig”), working from a script he wrote with John Krasinski and Bryan Woods, keeps his camera intimately focused on Samira’s sometimes poignant and frustratingly counterintuitive fatalistic journey. It’s an artful decision that won’t sit well with some viewers looking for a more traditionally harrowing and exciting monster movie.

Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot (now playing) – l Fix Rating 7/10 – Angel Studios “Sound” brand that launched to blockbuster results last year with “Sound of Freedom” continues their “pay it forward” effort with “The Story of Possum Trot.”

The movie is the narrative telling of the true story of a small community in East Texas that came together to adopt 77 children trapped in the foster system. It’s a compelling film without question, as co-writer/director Joshua Weigel delivers a quality production with excellent leading performances.

Unlike the action-driven thriller that marked “Sound of Freedom,” “Hope” is a straight drama that concentrates on smaller stories of hope, forgiveness, and sacrifice. Nika King stars as Donna Martin, the driven preacher’s wife who becomes interested in adoption even as money woes reign down on her already-established family. When her minister husband, Reverend WC Martin (Demetrius Grosse), hears a small voice inside him, he inspires his financially strapped tiny congregation to adopt children that seemingly no one wants.

Elizabeth Mitchell stars as a foster system employee who is agnostic but moved by the deeply religious motivations of Martin’s congregants. This true story will bring viewers to tears, especially as the end title credits show actual footage of the families featured in the film.

Streaming Selects:

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (July 3) – The first “Beverly Hills Cop” film hit theaters in 1984, when Eddie Murphy was just 23 years old. It was the third hit in a row for the Saturday Night Live star, and its success led to two sequels in 1987 and 1994. “Axel F” brings Murphy’s Axel Foley back to Beverly Hills and reunites him with John Taggart (John Ashton) and Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold), along with a relatively younger detective played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. While I hope the still-in-great-shape 63-year-old Murphy can rekindle the old “Cop” magic, the trailers tease a loud, bombastic, and familiar-looking crime actioner.

Cobra Kai (season 6, part 1 premieres on July 18) – The final season of Netflix’s popular “Karate Kid” inspired series delivers part 1 this month with five episodes with parts 2 and 3 on the way. The story continues the unlikely pairing of former adversaries Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), who must combat bad influences from their past that may adversely affect the minds of young karate students.

Space Cadet (July 4) – Emma Roberts stars as Rex, a party girl who cons her way into a NASA astronaut program. This fantasy comedy follows the “Legally Blonde” playbook, as Rex uses her unique, unscientific talents to save the day. The trailers look wacky and ridiculous, but it might be good for a few laughs.

SharkFest (starts July 1) – A series of shark-related programming began at the end of last month, sure to strike fear in the bones of former President Donald Trump, who at his rallies has expressed trepidation concerning the fast-swimming, toothy beasts. In all, there will be 26 hours of programming across various platforms, including National Geographic, Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN2. I’m interested in checking out the show that covers the Earth’s biggest tiger sharks, which dominate the shores off the coast of Australia.

Fly Me to the Moon (July 12 in theaters followed by a release on Apple TV+ later in the month) – l Fix Rating 6/10 – Like “Space Cadet,” “Fly Me to the Moon” is another NASA-focused romantic comedic fantasy. The film stars Scarlett Johansson as a fictional advertising expert named Kelly Jones. When Jones is recruited by a shadowy Nixon operative to “sell the moon,” she butts heads with mission director Cole Davis (Channing Tatum) in the months leading up to the iconic 1969 moonshot.

While the film is undeniably charming and cute, it might be off-putting for NASA fans, who will fear that the fictional characters played by movie stars Tatum and Johansson will distract from the historical truths. It’s best to think that this story exists in a parallel universe. But even then, despite the casting of Johansson as a strong female character, the movie wrestles with reconciling the sexism of the time.

There were significant and impactful women working at NASA during the time of the moonshot, as chronicled in the terrific 2016 movie “Hidden Figures.” “Fly Me to the Moon” may have been more successful had it embraced an inspiring true story and let the fictitious elements go. Still, supporting performances are fun, especially Jim Rash as a flamboyant film director.

Love Lies Bleeding (July 19) – l Fix Rating 6/10 – — This steamy and provocative crime thriller features two excellent performances from Kristen Stewart and Katy O’Brian. The story has Stewart as Lou, the daughter of a local crime boss played by Ed Harris (looking like “Tales from the Crypt’s” CryptKeeper).

When a body-building drifter named Jackie (O’Brian) visits the gym Lou runs, the two strike up a sexy romance. However, Jackie’s erratic behavior conflicts violently with Lou’s father’s criminal empire, leading to a major clash. The brave Stewart, who has thoroughly burst her “Twilight” typecasting, has a natural chemistry with talented newcomer Katy O’Brian. But I wished the story took them somewhere instead of meandering off into vexing ambiguity.

Theatrical Teasers:

l Despicable Me 4 (July 3) — Steve Carell returns to voice Gru, as his family and minions are forced to go on the run from a new adversary named Maxime Le Mal (voiced by Will Ferrell). Poster from UniversalPictures.com

l MaXXXine (July 5) — The third film in director Ti West’s “X” trilogy stars Mia Goth as 1980s adult film star Maxine Minx trying to cross into mainstream cinema as she encounters a mysterious slasher killer stalking Hollywood starlets.

l Longlegs (July 12) — Nicolas Cage plays a serial killer doggedly pursued by an FBI agent in director Oz Perkins’s (see “The Blackcoat’s Daughter”) creepy-looking horror thriller.

l Twisters (July 5) — Glen Powell (see Netflix’s “Hit Man”) stars in the long-awaited sequel to the 1996 blockbuster about storm chasers risking it all to study dangerous tornados.

l Deadpool & Wolverine (July 5) — This Marvel entry is the big one of the Summer, if not the year. Ryan Reynolds is back in the red suit playing unkillable mercenary Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, who becomes unstuck in time and calls upon Logan, aka Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), to come out of retirement to save the day. This R-rated MCU adjacent movie looks to include a host of former Marvel actors reprising their comic book characters. Let’s hope it’s even more entertaining than 2018’s fun but uneven “Deadpool 2.”

It’s our honor to share not one, but 5 graduating high school seniors who completed the impactful TVOC or Fear This 4 Life accident avoidance driving course (tvoc.ws) and who have shared how they are actively making a difference among their peers, classmates, and families influencing safe driving behaviors.

Thank YOU for your support of our mission to save lives on our roads. Through your generous support of the annual Rainbow Run & Family Fun Day we are grateful to award 5 $1500 scholarships this year to deserving students.

Maggie Monk, our first recipient from Northgate High School, is described as having a strong successful presence in the classroom, serving her school and community and athletics. It was shared that she has a tender heart for others and sets the example as a leader especially with a younger age group. This graduating senior shared that taking the TVOC class was the best decision she and her parents have made. She shared that the exercises taught her very important skills on learning how to handle her vehicle.

She makes sure that all distractions are out of sight and mind and seat belts on for anyone riding in the car with her.

She also shared how she personally experienced a life altering car wreck caused by a distracted driver and how this impacted her and her view of the importance of responsible driving.

It’s an honor to recognize the 2nd Abby’s Angels Foundation 2024 Scholarship recipient from Newnan High School, Lindy Scarborough. Lindy is described as having a positive attitude and a passion for her faith. She is a focused student athlete who always places the needs of others before herself.

She leads by example and does so with a kind hearted nature. Lindy is a dedicated advocate for safe and responsible driving and encourages her friends and classmates to uphold the same standards while operating a vehicle or as a passenger. She has the courage to speak up if she is witness to someone practicing unsafe driving habits, especially distraction.

Thank you Lindy, for being a shining example of how we can accomplish this together.

Anna Marie Murphy from East Coweta High School is our 3rd scholarship recipient. She is described as having a strong moral compass, unwavering values and a deep commitment to making a positive impact on the world around her.

She bravely uses her creative and engaging talents during National Teen Driver Safety Week as an EC Ambassador to raise safe driving awareness encouraging her age group to not drive distracted or impaired.

Anna Marie created and executed the idea to place the Abby’s Angels logo along with our safe driving 1Life1Choice hashtag on the back of every student parking pass at ECHS. The placement of the sticker is so that this safe driving reminder is in the driver’s line of sight each time they get behind the wheel of their vehicle.

Congratulations to Ava Mussell from Trinity Christian School!

She’s the 4th scholarship recipient. Ava is described as having compassion and truly lives by her faith. It was shared that this student has a maturity beyond her years and puts other’s needs before her own with gentle kindness.

Ava bravely uses her voice to raise awareness encouraging her friends to not drive distracted. She purposefully shares with her classmates and peers that no one is invincible and decisions and choices have consequences. She firmly believes that through leading by example, others will also have the confidence to speak up creating a ripple effect of lives saved on our roads.

We deeply believe these actions will change the statistics and save lives too Ava!

Our 5th and final

recipient is Phoebe Lichty of Landmark

School. She is described as being an incredibly dedicated student, athlete, community member and friend. It was shared that Phoebe isn’t motivated by glory or grades; instead she is motivated by the desire to improve. Phoebe shared that her favorite aspect of the TVOC (tvoc.ws) course was how the content provided made an “impossible” situation real and visible. She stated that it made her realize that being safe was her main priority while driving.

Phoebe believes the way she can make a positive impact on her peers with regard to distracted driving is by recommending the TVOC class and by a simple impactful conversation encouraging them to put safety above all else while in the driver’s seat.

Fighting Forward: Coweta County NAACP Joins City of Hope Cancer Center Atlanta in Celebrating Juneteenth

Coweta County’s local county chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) hosted their annual Juneteenth celebration and Freedom Fund event at City of Hope Cancer Center Atlanta, a comprehensive cancer treatment center in Newnan. The community celebrated the progress of Black and African Americans and looked ahead toward the future amidst an evening of food, fun, music, art and good company. The main event featured a panel discussion with Dr. Cynthia Finney, president of the Coweta County NAACP; Jonathan Watkins, president of City of Hope Atlanta; and the Rev. Yolanda Colton, pastor of Mount Olive United Methodist Church. Focused on the event theme, “Fighting Forward,” panelists discussed ways in which the community and its leaders – health care, government, business, spiritual and more – have made progress thus far, and must continue to play an active, engaged role in eliminating racial and socioeconomic barriers to forge paths toward an equitable and accessible future for all.

“We were proud to host this year’s Juneteenth event at City of Hope Atlanta because equality and healthcare go hand in hand,” said Watkins. “It is not only a celebration, but a call to action.

We celebrate the resilience and strength of Black and African Americans, and the success we have achieved in the face of adversity. And we carry on that mission into the future to continue the fight for equality and justice in all areas of society.”

Juneteenth commemorates the abolition of slavery and the emancipation of enslaved people across Texas and the former Confederate states on June 19, 1865.

Common goals are important to Relunda and that’s why she loves working with Home Helpers. “I enjoy working with Home Helpers because the company shares my compassion for our clients’ wants and needs. Most importantly, I think that Home Helpers is the vehicle that allows me to walk in my purpose and passion.”
