2 | The PAPER | June 2022 | www.wintersmedia.net _____________________________________________________________________________________ That day made me appreciate the game of golf like never before. Hitting a little ball so that it soars into the air, landing as close to the pin as possible, may sound easy whereas it’s nothing but. Or as Winston Churchill said, “Golf is a game whose aim is to hit a very small ball into an even smaller hole, with weapons singularly ill-designed for the purpose.” Funny, but true. Golf takes a lot of practice and skill, yet this “love it or hate it” game can teach us several life lessons. Here are a few:

with Kelly Preston Golf. Many people love it, others despise it. I grew up with a dad and brother that love the game. However, I married a man that hates it. What’s interesting is that our oldest son has developed a true love for playing golf. He plays for Newnan High School, and I recently had the opportunity to walk alongside him at one of his tournaments.

• Honesty. In the game of golf, you are your own referee and are required to be honest in keeping your own score. P.G. Wodehouse once said, “To find a man’s true character, play golf with him.” • Stay focused. Remaining focused hole-after-hole, hourafter hour, is important and teaches one how to focus on what matters. Professional golfer Tom Watson said, “Confidence in golf means being able to concentrate on the problem at hand with no outside interference.”

• Embrace quiet. The world we live in is full of noise and distractions, yet the game of golf is typically quiet. Learning to embrace quiet is something many of us could stand to do more of. • Patience. The saying, “Patience is a virtue” is definitely true in the game of golf and in life. Or as the Chinese proverb says, “Patience is a bitter plant, but its fruit is sweet.” Developing patience is often a life-long lesson, so why not start working more on it now? • Keep learning. Like most things in life, the game of golf reminds us that there is always room for improvement and more things to learn. As author John Maxwell says, “Live to learn, and you will really learn to live.” So whether you hit the links this summer or not, hopefully we can all embrace the life lessons that come from the game of golf. Kelly Preston is a nurse-turnedstay-at-home-mom to four amazing and energetic children. Though she sometimes forgets to buy toilet paper amidst their busy schedules, Kelly finds time to run RACE for the Orphans, a non-profit focused on supporting adoptive families. She loves Jesus, people, a really good book, and pondering the little things. n

Notes from Jackson Street “Lisa - recommendation” That’s all it says.

And I have been hitting the little “later” button, basically a snooze button on this To Do app I use, for several days now. I do that simply because I am at a total loss. Let’s rewind.

I am, at heart, a journalist. I was a bureau chief in Washington, D.C. and have run papers from Alaska to Georgia, with a few stops in between. I’ve written more stories than I can remember over a nearly 40-year career. I am also a note taker. That would appear obvious since I’m a journalist, but I am referring to writing down quotes I read, jotting down something funny someone said, ideas and reminders to pick up the milk.

Winters, Publisher, Editor john@wintersmedia.net Corby Carlin Winters, Marketing/Public Relations corby@wintersmedia.net Joey Howard, Digital Editor / Sales 404.698.0734 joey@wintersmedia.net Levi Winters, Social & Visual Media levi@wintersmedia.net Seth Winters, Ad Design sethswinters@gmail.com Ruth Harris Doyal, Composition 770.254.1421 info@wintersmedia.net

An aside. Ever notice how you are headed off to the grocery store and your significant other asks you to get (fill in the blank). You say “sure,” and head out the door and you start hearing “please get X, Y, and Z too. Oh, and we need A, B and C as well.” You finally give up, grab a pen a paper (or a smart phone app) and go, “what was all that again?”

The PAPER office is located at 18 Jackson Street, Newnan, GA 30263

With two newsprint publications, and now adding two high-gloss, high-end magazines to our little media empire, I have a lot to remember. So much so I carry a little notebook with me pretty much everywhere.

Office Hours: Mon., Wed., Thurs., Fri. 9 - 4.

Okay, we are now leaving the “aside” and going back to the “rewind.”

I also have a nifty little calendar/task app on my smartphone. Sometimes it is just quicker to type something - like a new meeting - right on the phone app and be done with it. Like I said, I have a lot to remember and my To-Do or Tasks or whatever you want to call it can sometimes be rather lengthy. But there is a great deal of satisfaction crossing off another “to-do” on that list. (Cue Queen’s “Another One Bites The Dust”.)

Another aside. All those new “journals” that “DO AWAY WITH YOUR TO-DO LIST FOREVER” are, in fact, just supercharged to-do lists. I mean, you make a circle next to your project and start filling it in as it progresses. Of course, this is after you’ve set your three goals for the day. THEN we pause for our Zen moment. And after getting more of your circle done, we have reflection time. But here’s the question regarding your fancy little Tao journal - did you remember the damn milk? Okay, let’s leave the “aside” again, and honestly, we’ve had enough of the “rewind.” Back to “Lisa - recommendation.”

I have no idea who Lisa is. I have no idea about any recommendation. Let’s just go ahead and admit I don’t know if I am supposed to give a recommendation for Lisa, or if I’m supposed to ask Lisa for a recommendation. Or for that matter, whether I am supposed to recommend someone to Lisa.

Obviously, I did not provide enough information on this particular to-do to make it worthy of being an actual to-do. Thus my constant “snoozing” of this particular task, because, well, my head hurts.

So, Lisa, if you are out there, let’s come full circle or jump the shark or meet up or (fill in the blank with whatever term) and help me remember what this evaluation is all about. Because at some point, I’m just going to have to scratch you off the list.

John

What’s Trending

On the Local Art Scene If you happen to be in Savannah this summer you will be able to see Valerie Dumas’ paintings at Savannah Gallery of Art. Valarie is owner of Gillyweed in downtown Newnan, which is celebrating their 10-year anniversary. The shop is full of wonderful finds, new and old.

with Corby Carlin Winters

(Corby is known to many as the Little Black Dress and The Paper Girl. She has a passion for fashion and home decor and is crazy about fabulous shoes and anything in leopard print. She is a trained counselor and loves writing, ministering, speaking and offering businesses growth coaching. She treasures spending time with good friends, Winters and the Sons of Thunder.) There are so many new trends happening in social media, politics, business and fashion. Here’s the latest.

On The Wine Scene Looking for a fun night with friends where you can fine tune your love and knowledge of wines around the world? Then The Classic Market in Senoia has you covered. Chrissy Lesseski is the owner and her shop features over 50 Georgia vendors. Chrissy originally started with just Georgia wines and now has expanded to wines from around the world. She is also spotlighting local beers too. The Classic Market presents six pours of wine and a glass of your choice paired with a shared charcuterie board. Each wine is specially chosen to fit a specific country, region or winery. You and your friends will find the evening enlightening and educational too. The wine tastings are held eight to ten evenings a month and fill up quickly.

On The Style Scene It is always fun to spruce up your wardrobe with some new seasonal elements. This summer, shorts with suit jackets are classy and cute, yellow is hot, feathers are everywhere as are leopard and lace. The monochromatic look is slimming and such a classic look.

On The Beauty & Skin Care

Jennie Adkins Horne, another local artist, has a new collection of paintings solely of women of all ages which is entitled “The Beloved.” Jenni debuted this collection at the Spring Art Walk at The Boyd Gallery in March and it was well received. “The Beloved” collection is now on display at The Crosstown Grill in Peachtree City.

The Local Alchemist I am putting the spotlight on someone who has made a magical and positive impact in our community. Mr. Joe Crane Sr., did something that was noticed by many, but not many know his part in this wonderful Random Act of Kindness. So we want to raise a glass to Mr. Joe Crane Sr., for buying the old dilapidated Newnan House Motel, tearing it down and getting everything trucked off. Thank you for removing this eyesore!!

Gordon Decorating Interior Painting Drywall Repairs

Scott Gordon, owner. 35 years experience Licensed  Bonded  Insured Mary Ellen Hutchenson, owns Merle Norman Cosmetics in Newnan and LaGrange, and also Sugars Boutique in Newnan. Mary Ellen is an amazing business woman, creative and talented. Since COVID Mary Ellen said “they have definitely seen an increase in skin care sales. The masks have been hard on our skin so products focusing on fine lines, wrinkles, loss of elasticities and firmness are among our top sellers.” Men are investing in their skincare regime too. “Anti-aging complex products that are loaded with triple peptides, ceramides, botanicals and other wrinkle fighters are the best defense to fight premature aging,” Mary Ellen said. “Right now, customers are more concerned about results rather than costs.”

The

Jetsetting Fashionista

The Dirty Derby. The Grit and the Glamour. The plane ride to Kentucky was uneventful. And that’s what you want in a plane ride. Uneventfulness. Normalcy. But both of those qualities evaporated as soon as I touched ground at the Derby. We kicked off with Thurby (the Thursday before the Derby), which is typically for locals. You can see the Thursday races for $30 instead of $1500. Kentucky minions, we welcome you to Thurby! (Doesn’t seem condescending at all, right?) Well I went and I minioned. It’s basically the same thing as the Derby, minus the 100K frat boys celebrating their 20-year anniversary. I mean, let’s face it, any man wanting to dress up and wear a hat was definitely a [fill in name of fraternity here]. Or maybe I’m just salty that I can’t get my Seattle-born husband to don a seersucker suit and join the fun. As for me, I brought 17,000 outfits and 489 hats, so I was down for any occasion the Derby threw at me. Bring it, KD!

This year the Derby was “all inclusive”. Yay! Food and drinks are FREEEE! Well, turns out it was about as free as everything else in life. An extra $300 gets you a place in a 30-minute line that ends with the lady in front of you taking the last four chicken tenders. My chicken tenders. I had laid claim to them! I even talked to some guys who were eating hotdog BUNS. Just the bun. That’s all they could find! “All you can eat” apparently made everyone in Kentucky ravenous, and try as it might, the Derby, bless its equine heart, just couldn’t keep up with the demand. The next day was Kentucky Oaks, the Friday before the Big Day. We bought tickets ahead of time so we were set. All dressed up and some place to go, we headed to Churchill Downs. It was crowded. And it rained. (A special shout-out to the Derby gods that we’d bought covered seats.)

The horses raced. Mine lost. Mine always loses. Except I knew that Taiba was going to win the Derby. So my cash day was coming on Saturday, right? And who cares anyway? I was at the Kentucky Derby! Rain or shine, win or lose, hungry or full of hot dog buns, the excitement was palpable.

As fun as it all was, the event I was most looking forward to (correction: strike “looking forward to” and add “fervently salivating over”) was the Friday night gala Unbridled Eve. It’s literally dripping with celebrities. (And maybe a horse racing enthusiast here and there.) Not that I’m celebrity crazy or anything.

OK, I can’t lie to my beloved readers: I AM CELEBRITY CRAZY. Unbridled Eve was my Mecca.

Reporter at Large Emily Chandler-Westergreen

I’m a product of the 80s, so let’s just say I stepped into my 80-90s Sitcom Paradise. I’m talking AC Slater, Clarissa (or Sabrina), as in Explains It All (or The Teenage Witch). And Micheal Gross, the dad from Family Ties.

Joan Melissa Hart, Emily and friends So who do you think my favorite was? Heart throb Mario Lopez? One would think. Oh, but it isn’t so. It was Micheal Gross. Why? Well, for that story, let’s rewind 30 years or so to the Court Square in downtown Newnan. Specifically, our local Lee-King Pharmacy, complete with a soda fountain serving up the best milkshakes in town. The year was 1991. Eleven-year-old Emily Chandler (that would be me) was heading into Lee King for a chocolate shake and a grilled chicken salad sandwich, lovingly prepared by a sweet lady with the name of—I’m not making this up—-Emily Chandler. (Old-school Newnanites can attest to this.)

Turns out, they were filming a movie inside. As I was walking into the drug store, the “dad” from my favorite show was walking out.

Thank you so much to all our runners, volunteers, vendors, and sponsors for helping us have a successful 2022 Keris Kares Royal Run: Superhero Edition! We had over 400 runners and we are so thankful for your continuous support every year!

This ad was generously donated by Deidre K. Bembry State Farm as part of our Give BIG campaign to highlight and promote nonprofits. deidre@asktheinsurancelady.com

I was taken aback. And it showed. With a look of total surprise, I gasped and pointed. And Mr. Family Ties gave it right back. The same surprised expression. The same point of the finger. It was a moment that has stuck in my mind for 30+ years.

Now let’s zoom back up to 2022, where Michael Gross and 42-year-old Emily Chandler (now Westergreen) are standing on the red carpet at Unbridled Eve, recreating for Michael Gross and Emily the camera those gasps and those mutual points … from almost a third of a century ago. It was a full-circle moment I could never have anticipated. The End.

Oh, wait, did I mention the next day, I went to the Derby? Emily Chandler-Westergreen has a passion for fashion. The founder of Underground Runway, a boutique-with-a-twist, she’s a regular fixture at New York Fashion Week, Sundance and other celebrity-drenched events—though none more gratifying than time spent with her family.

The Film Fix … Streaming Edition

with Jonathan W. Hickman

Capsule Reviews … New Rating System - A “Fix" is recommended with a rating between 6 and 10! a “No Fix” with ratings of 1 to 5 isn’t. http://dailyfilmfix.com/ Jonathan W. Hickman is an entertainment attorney, filmmaker, college professor, and novelist. More about Jonathan can be found by visiting http://filmproductionlaw.com/)

In Theaters: Jurassic World Domination (June 10) – Hopefully, the “Jurassic” franchise will right the ship after veering off in the lack-luster last installment. Director Colin Trevorrow (who gave us “Jurassic World”) pulls out all the stops, and with him are series regulars Sam Neill as Alan Grant, Laura Dern as Ellie Sattler, and Jeff Goldblum as Ian Malcolm. Four years after the dinos’ escape in “Fallen Kingdom,” humans are forced to co-exist with their fellow apex predators. Of course, this means chaos as the world is reshaped to accommodate this new invasive species. Trailers hint at a post-apocalyptic storyline. Chris Pratt returns as Owen Grady, and Bryce Dallas Howard continues to play his on-again-off-again romantic interest, Claire Dearing. Can their prior experiences help overcome the dangers that threaten the planet? Elvis (June 24) – Director Baz Luhrmann (see 2001’s “Moulin Rouge!” and 2013’s “Gatsby”) trains his musical and theatrical lens on the life of rock and roll icon Elvis Presley. Last month, the film received a reported 12-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival. Television actor Austin Butler gets his breakout role by playing Elvis in the movie. The trailers give us a glimpse at Butler’s transformation, as Elvis draws on his childhood experiences at church tent revivals to create his controversial hip-shaking stage presence. Tom Hanks transforms, as well, into Elvis’ infamous manager, who helped gain the star’s early recording contracts. Advanced buzz out of Cannes was very positive about this one. Most critics praised Luhrmann’s energetic approach to the material. And given the nature of the subject, a jaunty, colorful approach seems utterly appropriate. But be prepared, “Elvis” clocks in at an epic 2 hours and 39 minutes. Lightyear (June 17) – After our battle with COVID relegated Pixar offerings to the Disney+ streaming platform, “Lightyear” looks to a theatrical release to reassert the power of the award-winning animation studio. “Lightyear” is an unusual spin-off from the “Toy Story” franchise. The film tells the backstory of the hero that inspired the Buzz Lightyear toy. The trailers tease an intergalactic adventure in which Buzz battles aliens on what appears to be another planet in an attempt to save his fellow astronauts. The MCU’s Captain America actor Chris Evans voices Buzz in the movie. As we all know, Tim Allen was the voice of the toy version of the character throughout the “Toy Story” installments. The Black Phone (June 24) – When director Scott Derrickson left the “Doctor Strange” sequel to be replaced by director Sam Raimi, he embraced his horror roots (see his 2012 film “Sinister,” for example) in taking on “The Black Phone.” Shot during the pandemic, the film is an adaptation of a short story by Stephen King’s son Joe Hill (see “Locke & Key”). This creepy entry comes from Blumhouse Productions, the producers responsible for launching “The Purge” franchise, rebooting “Halloween,” and producing the significant dramatic projects “Whiplash” and “BlacKkKlansman.” “The Black Phone” thrilled and frightened viewers at Fantastic Fest last year. The story concerns the abduction of a 13-year-old boy named Finney Shaw (Mason Thames) by a man known as The Grabber (a scary Ethan Hawke). Finney is held in a soundproof basement. But when a disconnected phone mysterious begins to ring, Finney receives help from spirits beyond the grave. The Grabber’s former victims are determined to prevent Finney from experiencing their fate. The trailers promise a bloodcurdling combination of chills and action.

Streaming Selects: Stranger Things (streaming now) l Fix Rating 7/10 – The fourth season of Netflix’s blockbuster series needs three deliberately paced episodes to reacquaint viewers with the “Stranger Things” universe. After all, the last season dropped way back on July 4, 2019. Therefore, it will take time for viewers to fully embrace and remember the events in Hawkins that brought the kid heroes to season 4. Following season 3’s “Battle of Starcourt,” the team splits up with Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), joining Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) and her sons Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) and Will (Noah Schnapp) in California. Once there, Eleven has problems assimilating into everyday teenage life without her superpowers. The high school trauma she experiences is very much akin to something from the pen of Stephen King (see “Carrie”). She’s helped by the sensitive Will, who walks around on tenterhooks. Meanwhile, a new supernatural threat from the Upside Down world has emerged back in Hawkins. This new terror is one of the most horrifying creations yet from show creators and writers Matt and Ross Duffer. And in keeping with their throwback to the 1980s approach, this season features some of the most gore-infused moments to date. The Duffers’ more mature approach is consistent with the story arc of the characters, who audiences have followed since 2016. Viewers, too, have grown up with Eleven, Mike Wheeler, Dustin Henderson, Lucas Sinclair, and Max Mayfield. And while they are dealing with some distinctly adult situations, they still retain much of their newly minted teen sensibilities. This relative immaturity makes the kids’ reactions to impossible conditions and circumstances feel authentic while still a part of the more considerable supernatural experience. These young faces still manage to engage us (me as a parent) with their dangerous plight. And as spoiled in the trailers, Hawkins’s sheriff and selfless protector, Jim Hopper (David Harbour), is still very much alive, having been assumed dead in a previous season. His return is gritty and sets the stage to expand “Stranger Things” to an entirely new location outside the United States. The Duffer brothers take advantage of nostalgic elements, including the Cold War conflict of the time. “Stranger Things” season 4, part 1, gives us seven episodes that help to explain more about Eleven’s origin and purpose. The episodes are nearly feature film in length, with episode 7 clocking in at 98 minutes. Look for the second part to drop on July 1, 2022, with what is likely two feature films that should help to pull together the somewhat disjointed narrative threads introduced in this season.

Ms. Marvel (June 8, with episodes released weekly) – MCU fans will have to wait another month for the July 8th release of “Thor: Love and Thunder.” And with “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” beginning to wan at the box office (as “Top Gun: Maverick” took over), “Ms. Marvel” will weekly deliver its six episodes throughout the month and into the next. Consistent with the introduction of the MCU’s first Egyptian superhero in “Moon Knight’s” Layla El-Faouly (May Calamawy), “Ms. Marvel” gives us the universe’s first Muslim super in Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani). The story has the New Jersey-based Pakistani-American Khan acquiring and learning to use her unique powers that

enable her to shift and change the shape of her body. Naturally, she must battle the forces of evil as she hones her talents. Obi-Wan Kenobi (May 27, with new episodes released weekly) – Dropped early on the Disney+ streaming platform, “Obi-Wan Kenobi” stars Ewan McGregor as the title Jedi. Taking place on the desert planet Tatooine, this six-episode limited series follows ObiWan as he watches over the young Luke Skywalker while avoiding the Empire’s fearsome Jedi hunters. Westworld (season 4) (weekly episodes begin June 26) – The Michael Crichton-inspired story continues with season 4. After the sentient android Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) escapes into the real world in season 3, her power only appears to increase in this installment. Meanwhile, fellow self-aware robot Maeve (Thandiwe Newton) goes on her own journey of enlightenment. The question is: whether there is room for the human race in a world controlled by living machines?

Physical (season 2) (June 3, with new episodes weekly) – Last year, Apple found themselves with a minor hit in “Physical.” And I loved it! The 1980s set series follows a housewife named Sheila (a perfect Rose Byrne) searching for something productive in her life. When she stumbles upon an aerobics school at her local mall, she insinuates herself into the business. Finding a passion for aerobics instruction that matches her entrepreneurial spirit, Sheila begins to build an empire of sorts threatened by criminal and chauvinistic elements of the time. The trailers tease the return of actor Paul Sparks (see “House of Cards”) as conservative mall owner John Breem, who became Sheila’s covert supporter in season 1.

The Boys: Season 3 (streaming now) l Fix Rating 8/10 – I’ve got a soft spot for this often profane and violent take on the superhero genre. Led by a hero known as Homelander (Antony Starr), the hero group called the Seven does some good while also hurting innocents. The collateral damage gives voice to the opposition, manifested in mercenary Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), who has a personal vendetta against Homelander. The story brings us fully into the tilted and dangerous world of the supers. Season 3 picks up where the last season left us, following the battle with neo-Nazi supervillain Stormfront (Aya Cash). The mentally disturbed Homelander is still in control of the team, but he’s been reined in a bit by a controlling corporation headed by Stan Edgar (“Breaking Bad’s” Giancarlo Esposito). Meanwhile, Butcher’s partner Hughie (Jack Quaid) has taken a government job while also dating Starlight (Erin Moriarty). Further exploring the dangers of persons with superhuman abilities while also diving into the relationships between sups and humans, “The Boys” is an irreverent series that isn’t for younger viewers.

Arthouse : Facing Nolan (In limited theatrical release) l Fix Rating 7/10 – This handsomely made biography of legendary baseball strikeout king Nolan Ryan is all-encompassing to a fault. While all The Film Fix continued on page 17

The journalists interviewed by director Bradley Jackson (a prolific producer) are relegated to delivering glowing platitudes about Ryan instead of diving into the politics of the time.

The Film Fix continued from page 16 the elements are there, the film plays more like a highlight reel than an examination of Ryan’s prowess and mental fortitude. If you want to know what made this pitcher great, fans get some answers. However, the guarded nature of the film’s subject leaves some aspects of his career on the cutting room floor.

And Ryan’s pitching abilities are continually praised throughout the film, but the techniques that gave him his dominance are not fully explored. We do get a mention of Ryan working with a pitching coach once he was in the majors, and while it’s stated that he improved his delivery, we get little else about the pitching process that Ryan perfected.

Ryan is the best pitcher never to have won baseball’s Cy Young award. He never got his due despite his impressive stats (he still holds 51 records, including the most no-hitters and most career strikeouts). This fact is handled in the film, but exactly why he wasn’t respected by the members of Baseball’s Writer’s Association

It’s June, Paper readers – and lately, I’ve had something weighing heavily on my heart. It keeps coming up and I’m having a hard time understanding why except that maybe I need to be better at it. I have shared a lot about my Journey with all of you, and mostly about the lessons I’ve learned as the ‘adulting’ phase of my life has started. Surprise! This column will be no different.

I used to talk behind people’s backs. The world I lived in was full of that and even though I knew it wasn’t nice to do so, it was acceptable to those around me. There was so much turnover in staff and therefore friendships in the restaurant industry at the time that gossip was truth. It wasn’t until I came home one day – exhausted and unloading on my husband – that he told me that every time I came home, I talked about my co-workers and gossiped about their personal lives to him and he didn’t like it. That simple sentence made me think for a long time and remember something I have always been aware of since childhood - words hurt people. They really, really hurt. It doesn’t matter if they heard what I said or not – I was still spreading negativity about them to my inner circles. From that time forward, I have been very aware of the words that come out of my mouth and the way I treat people. Not that I changed overnight, but understanding that there is something that needs to change in your life is often the first step in overcoming it. I intentionally do my best to treat everyone the same – whether you are a CEO or you work in the service industry… my pest control person or my banker. And you know what? My life is richer in so many ways because of that one simple thing.

Journey

I don’t like to talk about this because I’m not proud of it … but I used to judge people, just by simply looking at them. I’m not talking about people watching and making up stories about someone’s life for entertainment – I gave very negative reactions about superficial things. Not because I was better than anyone else but for some reason I really don’t understand, I think it took my mind off my own problems and made me feel better about myself. And that makes literally no sense.

faced the towering man on the mound. And Ryan’s longevity is rightfully lauded, bringing the film’s most emotional moment when he’s forced to retire after an injury on the field. “Facing Nolan” is a great deal of fun, but as a former pitcher myself, who idolized the man in the 1980s, I wished that we’d heard more details about his philosophy and technical wizardry and less about the results of his efforts.

It’s your Journey so you have to do what makes you feel good about your life, but it can’t make you feel warm and fuzzy about choices that hurt someone else. Everyone deserves to be treated as a person – not an object to be talked about or gawked at for whatever reason. Whether the average person is attractive/unattractive, overweight/ underweight, rich/poor, or can do something for you or not should have no effect on the way they are interacted with. If you know you want to be more empathetic, empathy can be learned – I am living proof of that. You can start by practicing how you behave in your relationships with others and when you’re talking with someone, try to imagine what their life is like for him or her. Not to give someone a handout, but just to see that they are real people with a Journey just like you … that ended up where they are in the moment in time that you happened to cross paths with them.

Real Estate

with Jess Barron

What is CUVA?

Certain properties, including agricultural lands, forestlands, and environmentally sensitive areas, may be eligible for reduced property tax rates through conservation use valuation assessment (CUVA). The properties are assessed according to a combination of soil type, productivity and a reduced fair market value factor. This typically results in a significant reduction of property taxes. Landowners receive a reduced ad valorem tax rate for their property (epd.georgia.gov). Yes, this will save you money! The term of a conservation use is 10 years. The owners must promise to maintain their lands in designated use (agricultural, forestry or environmentally sensitive) for 10 years. Landowners can re-enroll after 10 years if they wish to remain in CUVA. The CUVA program is administered by each county’s tax assessor’s office. Requirements per county may be different, but typically a minimum of 10 acres is required. Some counties have recently increased this to 25 acres. No more than 2,000 acres may be enrolled in CUVA by one non-industrial, private landowner. Foreign citizens and foreign corporations are not eligible to enroll. The land must be kept in its qualifying use and cannot be used for any non-agricultural commercial business (epd.georgia.gov). Conservation uses are something else you need to consider when purchasing acreage or a home on acreage. There are significant penalties for landowners who break the conservation use before the end of the 10-year period. Owners who break the conservation use covenant must pay back to the taxing authorities TWICE the savings they received over the life of the covenant to the point it was breached, plus any applicable interest. If the property is sold during the covenant period, the new landowner must agree to continue the covenant or be responsible for penalties and taxes due if the covenant is breached under their ownership (epd. georgia.gov). If you are buying land, a farm, or a home on acreage, one of the first things you should check is if the property is a conservation use. Your Realtor can place language in your purchase and sale contract that will protect you in the event there is a conservation use. CUVA is a great way to save money on taxes. Acknowledgement and agreement of CUVA, in writing, by the buyer and seller, is very important in a real estate transaction. You do not want to be stuck paying the penalty on breaching the conservation use. Jess Barron is an Associate Broker with Lindseys, Inc. Hunter Scarbrough Foundation Awards $45,000 in Scholarships

The Hunter Scarbrough Foundation recently awarded $45,000 in scholarships to 13 deserving Coweta County graduating seniors. “Because of the generosity of so many over the past five years, we’ve been able to award $145,000 in scholarships to Coweta County students,” said Joni Scarbrough. “Every day, I feel so blessed that our family is part of this community when I see what it has done for our foundation. It is a true testament to not only how special Newnan is, but to the impact Hunter had on the lives of so many, that friends and strangers alike want to help us shine a light on so many deserving students.” The Hunter Scarbrough Foundation was created to honor Hunter’s memory by presenting a one-time college scholarship to high school seniors who have demonstrated the qualities Hunter possessed and shared with others, including faith, leadership, academic perseverance, and community service. East Coweta recipients each receiving $3500: Yahiron Pena, Kayleigh Dunn, Emma Small, Hannah Kunkle. Newnan High recipients each receiving $3500: Lucas Morrison, Tripp Slaton, Joshua Ward, Shelby KateCarnes, Caroline Sibley. Northgate recipients each receiving $3500: Ryan Poole, Bryson Swartz, Shelby Harlan, Demetria Parham. The Foundation has begun to resume its annual fundraisers including the summer favorite Glow Golf event. “We’re excited to help bring back a sense of normalcy after the past two years by partnering with Newnan Utilities to host Glow Golf,” said Scarbrough. “This year’s event will be held at Newnan High on Thursday, June 16. Details about the event can be found at www.Hunterman.org”

Intro To Summer Savings! IN-STOCK ITEMS UP TO 70% OFF

June, the month for Flag Day and Father’s Day. On Wednesday, May11, I got a bad cold that was indeed made worse due to being dehydrated and I thought I was never going to be able to drink enough water. As always in Newnan, people rushed to be of service. I got Gatorade and water and other supplies as well. Some had even offered to take me to the hospital. I had resolved to not go to the hospital except if I am in extreme pain. When I am in the least amount of pain my resolve would crumple like wet cardboard. I was not sure what had taken hold of me, but I knew if it was a simple cold it would clear in three or four days. Sure enough, on Saturday, May 14, I started to finally be able to get fully hydrated and started feeling much better. Have you felt so sick that you thought you would have to recover 100 percent just to die? Not a good feeling, I tell you. I had lots of strange dreams while in and out of my mind state. Once again I am very blessed to be living in the most loving and caring town in all of Georgia. I told one person and before I could hang up I was getting knocks on my door with supplies of Gatorade, water, etc. The same thing happened when I was sick two years ago. I was busy in between feeling weak and exhausted and counting my blessings. Nobody can pay me to move out of Newnan, nobody. I am still getting texts and cards day and night asking how I feel. I will tell you Newnan, Georgia, how I am feeling. I am feeling very blessed, and every day I experience the strong positive energy of divine spirit pouring down on me. I thank you all once again for your love and kindness. The Book of the Month is titled “The Life You’ve Always Wanted” by John Ortberg. This book is all about the teachings of Jesus. What stands out for me is that from the preface this book has been written from a truly human perspective. The author admits he still falls short at times. He yells at his children when they make a mess at dinner. He also reveals that as a presbyterian pastor, he too is still a work in progress. This is a book written for common, run of the mill human beings given to human nature. This is not a book for saints but for those who are still struggling to follow the teachings of Jesus. Such an example is seen on pay 220. In fact, such an example is seen throughout the book. This truly is a real confession for a pastor, that has written many books, to make. The last three pages of the book showcase three of his books. I am looking forward to reading them all. I borrowed the copy from House of Light. They have many interesting books and are located next to Christy’s Cafe. Their phone is 470-414-6711.

The Coweta County Ferst Foundation mission is to provide a free monthly age-appropriate book for every child under the age of five in Coweta County. Visit our website for more information: cowetaferst.org

Did You Know? • 61% of low-income families do not have a single piece of age-appropriate reading material in their home? • 1/3rd of Georgia’s children start school unprepared to learn? • 75% of Georgia’s students who are poor readers in the third grade will remain poor readers in high school?

How Do Books Help? The more words a child hears, the larger the child’s vocabulary and the larger the child’s vocabulary, the more likely the child will be a proficient reader. However, in order to read with a child, books must be in the home. Coweta Ferst Foundation, P.O. Possibilities

“The Possible’s Slow Fuse is Lit by the Imagination.” Emily Dickinson

It is hard to be creative or imaginative without the right toolbox, much like it is hard to build a house without a hammer and nails. What then goes into the toolbox for the person who creates ... whether it is art, literature, architecture, software, technology, etc.? Elon Musk is certainly in the news and whatever your opinion is of him, a quote of his certainly got my attention. He was asked how he knew so much about rockets, to which he replied “I read a lot of books.” He also claimed that when he left South Africa for the United States he had a small bag filled mostly with his favorite books. And may I say Possibilities???

Who does not want to be everything that they can be? Professional athletes use scouting reports, musicians use sheet music and theory, teachers use research, doctors study cases, and it goes on and on. It is clear ... many successful adults read a lot when they were children and continue to do so. Oprah Winfrey said, “books allowed me to see a world beyond the front porch of my grandmother’s shotgun house.” Reading built her imagination, which allowed her to envision possibilities beyond her modest start in life and thus light the fuse of possibility. I would say her fuse could start one of Mr. Musk’s rockets! One of the things I love about my job is I get to see thousands of fuses lit by children, teens, and adults on a daily basis, but especially during our summer reading contests and programs. We do not just check out books at the library, we help fill the toolbox of imagination and the possibilities are limitless.

Our summer reading theme is Oceans of Possibilities. Sign-up begins in late May and the program runs through July. We will have a Jimmy Bass is director of the Coweta Public Library System. He also Summer party on Friday, July 22 from 5-8 at the Central Soccer fields plays a mean guitar and sings at local venues.n so mark your calendars. When I think about this summer, I like to imagine that we will set new records The Bookmark is sponsored by Coweta Public Library System for hours read, sign-up, and program attendance. Even more so, that the county’s citizens converge on the libraries in such a way that staff is completely worn out and leaves work with no energy but wearing big smiles on their faces. These are grandiose wishes but Mr. Musk did grow up to build rockets! Mark Cuban, a household name due to the show Shark Tank, created his own company and now owns, among other things, the Dallas Mavericks basketball team. He calls reading his “competitive edge” and says everyone else has access to the same information but “most people don’t want it.” His toolbox stays full.

______________________________________________________________________________________ www.wintersmedia.net | June2022| The PAPER| 27 Greenville Street and Temple Avenue. One day, a month or so later, I happened to take a drive down to Warm Springs. The old Oakland Plantation house sits just off the road near the Roosevelt Airport, and a lightbulb went off in my head. I turned around, pulled over, took some pictures, and compared it with the photo from Sally. I was positive I had found one of the two mystery houses! Sally was elated, as this was the lone picture which featured her brother. John was able to pose in front of the Oakland Plantation house, which according to Sally, would have been quite a feat.

The

HISTORY

“He would have had to have been helped up those steps and use his crutches for support,” she said.

“A Sentimental Journey: Retracing A Brotherly Road Trip” Claire Nix, guest writer In 2020, NCHS received a research request from Sally Lyons McAlear, a retired administrative assistant from Missouri State University, asking if we could identify eight Polaroid pictures from the 1960s. The photos were of some of Newnan’s historic homes, taken during her brothers’ 1967 road trip to Warm Springs. Sally had seen the pictures in drawers over the years, but during the COVID-19 pandemic, she’d decided to tell her eldest brother’s

John was taken to the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation, named for President Franklin Roosevelt who sought relief from the effects of polio there. John was fitted for special leg braces and participated in rehabilitation exercises to assist him in navigating life after paralysis. He returned in 1967 to be refitted for new leg braces, and he was accompanied by his younger brother, Rick. Rick and John drove John’s hand-controlled 1967 Mustang to Warm Springs from Missouri. It seems while they waited on John’s braces to be made, they drove up to Newnan and snapped some

In April 2022, Sally and her husband, John McAlear, were finally able to make it down to Newnan. Sally intended to walk in the footsteps of her brothers and get “then and now” style pictures with each of the houses. After a tour of the McRitchie-Hollis Museum and lunch at Meat N Greet, we set off on a walking tour of downtown Newnan to Greenville Street, where Sally was able to get the rest of the pictures to complete her “then and now” series, which matched the photos her brothers took in 1967. She was able to not only walk in her brothers’ footsteps and see everything they saw, 55 years later, but also identify the one remaining house. They were fascinated by the City of Homes and taken in by its history. The McAlears also visited Warm Springs, where Sally got her picture taken at Oakland Plantation on the same steps as her brother had. John Lyons died in 1994. Sally is currently working on an essay detailing her own “sentimental” journey, as she calls it, to Newnan. Claire Nix was born and raised in Coweta County and is a trained Public Historian with a Master’s degree in Heritage Preservation. She lives in Newnan and is the Museum Assistant for the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society.

2022 Sally McAlear - Warm Springs, GA 1967 John and Rick Lyons - Warm Springs, GA story and the pictures came up again. At 17, John Lyons was outside of the ‘14 and under’ Missouri guidelines to receive the new polio vaccine, and though the family doctor had said he would vaccinate him anyway, he fell ill the day of his appointment. He was struck with polio and paralyzed from the waist down.

Polaroids of the beautiful historic homes. None of the pictures were labeled, and Sally initially thought they were from Warm Springs, but an archivist there told her they looked like Newnan. It took some time (and eye strain!), but I identified most of the houses in the pictures, except for two. Most of them were on
