with Kelly Preston Our family adopted a puppy last month, and now I feel like I have five children instead of the four human children that God has blessed me with. Two of these human children and I recently watched a movie called “Think Like a Dog.” It made us laugh, and coupled with having a new puppy, made me think a lot about life and some of the things we can learn from man’s best friend. Learning to walk with a leash takes time and consistency. Puppies instinctively don’t want to be tied to a leash following their person, yet that’s exactly what they need in order to stay safe and grow in confidence. Aren’t we the same? God’s Word is a “lamp to my feet, and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105), and when we are consistent in spending time reading it, we remain in closer connection to our Heavenly Father. Take time to smell the roses. Cooper, our puppy, loves to stop and sniff EVERYTHING. Our walks involve a lot of starting and stopping so that he can get his smelling fix. This is a great reminder of the importance to slow down, pause, and take time to enjoy all that is around me. Human touch is powerful. Cooper loves to have his belly and ears rubbed, and we give him a lot of human touch as positive reinforcement when he obeys. People also need safe, healthy, human touch. Research has shown many health benefits to touch for babies and adults. Most things in life that are worthwhile take energy and effort. Puppy training is not for the faint of heart. What in your life is requiring extra measures of energy and effort? Are you willing to do what it takes to meet your goals?
Plants, Flowers and Hanging Baskets for Mother’s Day.
Rest is necessary. Puppies love to play, but they also love to sleep. God created us to need rest, and as I get older, I am realizing the importance of rest. Sometimes that means getting more sleep, while at other times that means slowing down to rest from all the busyness that life brings. How can you incorporate more rest into your life? Dogs want to please their master. They want to hear “good boy” or “good girl.” I believe at our core we are the same. We deeply desire for someone, whether that be our Heavenly Master or a significant person in our life, to tell us we have what it takes and that we are doing a good job.

Relationships matter most. In the movie, Henry (the talking dog and star of the movie), says to his person, “We were happy because we had everything we need. Each other.” AMEN to that! Kelly Preston is a nurse-turnedstay-at-home-mom to four amazing and energetic children. Though she sometimes forgets to buy toilet paper amidst their busy schedules, Kelly finds time to run RACE for the Orphans, a non-profit focused on supporting adoptive families. She loves Jesus, people, a really good book, and pondering the little things. n

Levi Winters, Social & Visual Media levi@wintersmedia.net
There is an adopted fourth SON, the best friend of the youngest, who used to carpool with us every morning before they got the Sacred License. In his human form, he is known as Dr. Chase Puckett, NHS principal.
Now that they drive themselves, I read the Words alone with my morning coffee. With graduation upon us, I have selected a few that I hope our graduates will continue to meditate on and follow …
“There’s no need to be perfect to inspire others. Let people get inspired by how you deal with your imperfections!” “I’m glad you are here today and we get to walk this journey! Have a good morning!“ Dr. P “Starting strong is good. Finishing strong is epic.” Let’s have a great day! Dr. P

“Press forward and do your best!“ Dr. P
“Dancing is moving while trying not to step on anyone’s toes, pretty much the same as life. Have a great day and enjoy the dance, whether you think you can dance or not! Have fun!“ Dr. P “We dance for laughter, we dance for tears, we dance for madness, we dance for fears, we dance for hopes, we dance for screams, we are the dancers, we create the dreams!” Albert Einstein “Keep dreaming, keep dancing! Have a great day!“
“Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” Motto of the Special Olympics. “Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.” Dr. Seuss
“May we always strive to make sure everyone who comes into contact with us on life’s journey takes a good memory with them into the future! Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it! Make some memories!“ Dr. P
“This is the real secret of life...to be completely engaged with what you are doing in the here and now! Instead of calling it work, realize it is play if you make it a goal to have fun!” Have a good day! Dr. P “It’s okay to count down the days sometimes. It’s also okay instead of counting down the days we endure to instead look for all the ways we can make the remaining days count the most!“ “Counting Down the Days vs Making the Days Count.“
“Friendship and laughter are wildly underrated medications. Let’s spread a few doses for those struggling with the pains of life!“ “If you can laugh together, you can work together.” R. Orben
“Work hard. Have fun. Be yourself. Make a difference. And unless it’s theater, avoid drama.“
“People will judge you for no reason. Rather than throw stones back, use the stones they cast to build a solid foundation in your mind, because once you are strong, you are unstoppable. “ “We don’t drift into good directions. We discipline and prioritize ourselves there.” A Stanley
“Where are you in meeting your goals? It’s okay to revisit them, reboot, or even set new goals! It takes discipline which we create by doing the same positive things over and over again until they become habit.“ “Enjoy today! Make it your own!“ Dr. P “Be excellent to each other.” Bill

The teachings of Jesus is what my book of the month titled “Discover the Power Within You” by Eric Butterworth is all about. The author claims that this is not a book about Jesus’ religion, but it is indeed a book of Jesus’ religion.
May, the month of Cinco de Mayo and Mother’s Day.
Much of the book points to the things I have experienced in my daily life such as is expressed on page 66. On page 211 is a chapter that touches on reincarnation. The author points out the difference between the teachings of Jesus and the attitude of the early church fathers.
Yes, Newnan, we now have a book store on the Square once again. Candle Wick Book Company is a cute, cozy unique bookstore overflowing with personality, brand new books and good vibrations. It is located around the corner from the amazing The Hug Box Shop on 13 West Washington St.
The point of this book is as Jesus said, that what He has done we can do and do better. This is indeed the power that is within us all. The Kingdom of God is within man and the mind that is Christ Jesus is in every one of us.
Be sure to tell them Mr. Personality sent you. The phone number for Candle Wick is 706-302-1935 and The Hug Box phone is 404594-4841.
On page 175 is a chapter on the miracle of abundance. The author points out that there are no miracles but simply a misunderstanding of the power that is behind what appears as miracles that are explained in more detail on page 176. The true miracle working power is indeed faith. As stated on page seven, Jesus knew Himself to be the expression of God and that we can discover this God expression within ourselves as well. It is the very teachings of Jesus and the point of this book
The Courthouse Square had a very good turn out for the Artwalk and the first market day of the season. John Winters has been busy coming up with a new and improved “The Weekly” that used to be The Shopper. And the monthly free “The Paper” is overflowing with information about Newnan, the Courthouse Square and Coweta County. There is so much going on in Newnan and around the Courthouse Square that I do not have time or space to include it all, so you will get the highlights each month through my Mr. Personality column. I met so many nice, kind and loving people when I moved to this sweet town nine years ago that it truly led me to start my God-given Spiritual Love Letters Ministry, that is now my daily God-given purpose for being. My spiritual journey I speak of in my letters and monthly column is simply following the Golden Rule and following the teachings of Jesus.
I found that I could not put this book down. The wisdom it speaks of is wisdom I have experienced in my own life. It is truly our ministry to stay in God-consciousness that proves the power to experience our daily spiritual growth. This book points out that Jesus is not telling us that we may someday go to Heaven, but to know that we are already there. Be sure to experience this book for yourself and keep walking in light of divine spirit and be a lamp unto the world. Peace, love and much respect. Until next time, Mr. Personality n _______________________________

Interview
with Mary Caroline Moore Briefly describe yourself and what you do/did. My name is Mary Caroline Moore. I have a degree in music education from Georgia State University. I taught studio piano for 12 years, managed Georgia Youth Ballet under the direction of Magdalena Maury for 11 years, and currently I am the Executive Director of Newnan Theatre Company, and the director of the NTC’s Academy of Theatre Arts program, which is a musical theatre program for grades 2-8. Best piece of advice you’ve received.
My mom always told me to do things because it’s “nicer.” I have found that being nice gets the desired result in a much better way.

If I had it to do over … I don’t think there’s anything I would do over. You are going on an extended solo trip. What three albums and three books would you take? Three albums: A Night at the Opera by Queen, Yes! by Jason Mraz, and Romance of the Violin by Joshua Bell. Three books: Whip Hand by Dick Francis, The Princess Bride by William Goldman, and the Bible. Tell us one thing about yourself that few people know. My opera debut was as “Uncle Buoso” in Gianni Schicchi by Puccini. You are hosting a dinner party for six. What five people, living or dead, would you invite and why. Queen Elizabeth - I am fascinated by how she has ruled Great Britain for so long and with such dignity. Beverly Cleary - I could talk to her about how well she writes from a child’s perspective. Neil Armstrong - It would be interesting to talk to him about what led up to the first spacewalk. Julie Andrews - I would love to be able to discuss her career with her. Jim Henson - What a great creative mind! Name an as yet unfulfilled dream.

Hollonville Opry House
There was a place that always made you feel welcome, where the first thing you saw when you walked through the door was a smile and to the left a counter full of cupcakes, baked pies, egg salad sandwiches, hotdogs, drinks and coffee. Behind the counter were the volunteers and of course, Charlotte Kirkland. You walked through the next set of doors and into the auditorium with comfortable seating, and there was a cool stage with layered red curtains. As a musician you always felt at home, and standing behind the curtain to be announced was always very cool.

Hollonville Opry House’s last show in that building was in January 2019. They were looking for a new building and along with their son and daughter-in-law, and other dedicated folks, Charlotte & Harold Kirkland have started up the music again at Turin UMC in the fellowship hall, complete with a stage for the Bluegrass, Gospel & Country bands (and of course those delicious sandwiches and sweets) Every 1st & third Saturdays music is back and friends are the focus, as we’re reminded of what this means to the community and to the people who made this happen at Hollonville Opry. The
Journey
with Samantha Brazie
Don’t forget where you came from, but don’t you dare ever let it solely define you. Aloha, Paper readers! Last week, I had the pleasure of attending a conference for work that had a lot of very inspirational speakers lined up, along with a couple of people I had never heard of before. I like going to conferences, work or otherwise because I get to talk with people from different walks of life. Not only do I come back with great nuggets from the speakers, but also from the people I sit next to, the ones I end up at dinner with, etc. One of the speakers I had never heard of was Kat Cole. 100 Women Who Care Coweta County gave its second grant of the year to the NEST. From left are Coweta Community Foundation Executive Director Kristin Webb; Susan Mullins, a member of 100 Women Who Care; Chris Doughty, NEST volunteer; and Newnan City Church Pastor Jim Ellison.

For those of you that had no idea who Kat Cole was (like me), she started hostessing at Hooters in her late teen years and climbed the ladder so quickly that she became vice president at 26 years old. From Hooters, she went on to become the president of Cinnabon when she was barely 30 years old. I give you that (very abbreviated) version of her career to reveal that she grew up with a severe alcoholic for a father, causing Kat’s mom to leave him when Kat was nine years old to raise three girls on her own. Every year on Kat’s birthday, her mom writes the same note in her birthday card. It reads, “Don’t forget where you came from, but don’t you dare ever let it solely define you.” Please, read that again and think about it.

I firmly believe that we should always remember where we came from. It answers emotional and behavioral issues that we may not otherwise understand. However, letting our past define us is a helpless behavior. You are not helpless. Your future is and can be anything and everything you want it to be. It can be limitless. And my friend, you are the only one that can give that to yourself. All of us have a past. Some may be more positive than others, but I would venture to say that no one reading this today can reflect on their past and not think about what could have been or wish some things had been different. My favorite character (Kate) on my favorite TV show (This Is Us) said in the last episode, “Life would be much simpler if we could live it backwards.” My take on that is that we can only really understand our lives by looking back on things we’ve already done. We must come to terms that hard times, and sometimes heartwrenching times, happen to us for a greater purpose. It could be to help yourself in the future, your kids, friends – it’s impossible to know. But what doesn’t help us, as I mentioned in my last column, is ‘ruminating’ on them. So use your Journey as a tool or perhaps, a gift, to adapt and overcome anything in your future and maybe – just maybe – help others along the way. Until next time, friends. “Turn your words into wisdom.” – Oprah Winfrey Questions? Comments? Email me at balanced.brazie@gmail.com. n _____________________________________________

The Film Fix … Streaming Edition
with Jonathan W. Hickman
Capsule Reviews … New Rating System - A “Fix" is recommended with a rating between 6 and 10! a “No Fix” with ratings of 1 to 5 isn’t. http://dailyfilmfix.com/ Jonathan W. Hickman is an entertainment attorney, filmmaker, college professor, and novelist. More about Jonathan can be found by visiting http://filmproductionlaw.com/) “American Splendor” directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini are listed among the directors of this high-concept project.
In Theaters: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (May 6) – Following the massive success of last year’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Marvel Cinematic Universe fans should line up to see the second outing for Dr. Stephen Strange, the cynical and sarcastic Sorcerer Supreme aka Doctor Strange. Director Sam Rami (see “The Evil Dead”) returns to helm another Marvel property for the first time since 2007’s “Spider-Man 3.” In 2002, Rami ushered in the modern superhero movie with his landmark “Spider-Man.” And with “Strange,” he gets to apply his classic horror skills to the story taking viewers further into the multiverse stemming from the casting of a forbidden spell. Popular characters Wanda Maximoff/the Scarlet Witch (Elisabeth Olsen) and sorcerer Wong (Benedict Wong) join Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) in the adventure. This film is another entry in the MCU Phase Four. Firestarter (May 13) – Stephen King’s 1980 novel gets another adaptation (it was previously adapted for the big screen in 1984 with Drew Barrymore in the lead). The screenplay comes from writer/director Scott Teems (see the upcoming “The Exorcist” remake and the excellent 2009 film “That Evening Sun”). Zac Efron plays Andy McGee, the ill-fated father of Charlie (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), the little girl able to start fires with her mind. The two go on the run from shadowy government forces after their hidden telekinetic abilities are revealed. While the novel may be one of King’s lesser books (a kind of broader, more palatable “Carrie”), the nature of the narrative should find an audience in today’s comic book/superhero marketplace. Top Gun: Maverick (May 27) – Tom Cruise returns to his iconic role of Maverick, the high-flying, arrogant pilot that took part in the military’s Top Gun program. The 1986 film won the Oscar for Best Original Song, “Take My Breath Away,” and was nominated for Best Sound. It was directed by Tony Scott, who died in 2012. “Maverick” is directed by Joseph Kosinski (who worked with Cruise on 2013’s “Oblivion”). This new “Top Gun” film promises to put viewers into the seats of the planes with cameras that intimately capture authentic pilot action. Like the first movie, the production worked with the US Navy to make the flight scenes as accurate as possible. The youthful cast includes Miles Teller, playing the son of Maverick’s wingman Goose (Anthony Edwards), who was killed in the 1986 movie. The story has Maverick taking over the Top Gun program to train a new generation while battling demons from his past.
Streaming Selects: Operation Mincemeat (May 11) – After a limited theatrical run, this WWII set film from director John Madden (see “Shakespeare in Love” and “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”) makes its Netflix debut. Colin Firth leads an impressive cast (including Kelly Macdonald and Jason Isaacs) in this story concerning two intelligence officers using a corpse and false documents to trick German forces. Stranger Things (May 27) – The long wait is over. “Stranger Things” returns for its fourth season that continues the strangeness. Picking up following the Battle of Starcourt, we learn that Hopper, the heroic sheriff that appeared to perish in season three, is alive and imprisoned in Russia. Meanwhile, the kids enter high school in the 1980s, but while some of them might have left Hawkins, Indiana, the dangers of the supernatural upside-down world still threaten. Season 4 is presented in two chapters, with chapter two dropping in July.
:
Moon Knight (Now Streaming with the final episode premiering on May 4) – While “Doctor Strange” rules the month’s box office, the last episode of “Moon Knight” will release in May. This unusual show was a bit of a slow burn, but its off-kilter tone has won over fans. The show has Oscar Isaac playing a dual (possibly more than a dual) role as a man who serves as the avatar for a powerful Egyptian god. As he battles with his mental health, he must find the power to protect the world from possibly evil forces led by former avatar turned cult leader Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke).
The Flight Attendant (Season 2) (New Episodes weekly in May) – l Fix Rating 7/10 If there ever was a guilty pleasure, it’s “The Flight Attendant.” In season one, we met goofy alcoholic flight attendant Cassie Bowden (Kaley Cuoco), as she became embroiled in international intrigue after spending the night with a man who was murdered. In season two, the freshly sober Cassie is made a fullblown asset by the CIA and, in her own clumsy way, embarks on a secretive career as a spy. The cast includes Zosia Mamet as Cassie’s resourceful lawyer, Rosie Perez as a fellow flight attendant with secrets, and T.R. Knight as Cassie’s brother. Margaret Cho and Elizabeth Perkins also appear to add to the mystery.
The Essex Serpent (May 13) l Fix Rating 8/10 – May could be Brit month as the latest “Downton Abbey” film will help reinvigorate the theatrical box office bringing in the older vaccinated crowd. Skewing slightly younger is Apple’s England set limited series “The Essex Serpent.” Adapted by Anna Symon (see “Mrs. Wilson”) from the novel by Sarah Perry, this series is a spooky combination of drama and supernatural creepiness. The story follows a London widow named Cora Seaborne (Claire Danes) who moves to Essex to investigate the possible presence of a mythical sea serpent. As the title creature terrorizes the community, Cora forms a strained romance with a pastor played by Tom Hiddleston. Talented director Clio Barnard (see “The Arbor”) is at the helm in this deliberately paced chiller. The Big Conn (May 5) Fix Rating: 8/10 – The team behind the documentary series “McMillions” explores the crazy story of Kentucky attorney Eric C. Conn, who defrauded the US Government of $550 million through the Social Security disability program. This three-part series is fascinating and revealing of one man’s twisted pursuit of money that may have paradoxically helped his community until the scheme came crashing down.
Night Sky (May 20) – This eight-episode science fiction drama features JK Simmons and Sissy Spacek as a married couple who have been hiding a chamber beneath their barn that leads to a deserted planet. The trailer teases a tender love story between the two older leads. Still, it also includes the promise of action and adventure as the couple struggles to conceal their treasure while maintaining a sense of normality as they age. “Night Sky” marks the writing debut of producer Holden Miller (see “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore”).
Corrective Measures (Now Streaming) l Fix Rating 6/10 Bruce Willis stars as a character known as The Lobe in “Corrective Measures.” I’m confident that the production had no idea that Willis was experiencing aphasia. This cognitive disorder manifests in the difficulty in conveying thoughts through speech or writing; seeing Willis in this film being threatened with a lobotomy pushes the edge of good taste. Regardless of where to fall on whether the connections to the real world are inappropriate, Willis’s limited appearance in the movie provides it with some legitimate balance. His scenes opposite “Guardians of the Galaxy” star Michael Rooker are fun, as is a lot of the comic book nonsense in this low-budget entry. Director Sean Patrick O’Reilly leans on his creative animation background with this live-action adaptation of a graphic novel by Grant Chastain. The story is set in the future, where a mysterious “pulse” gives humans superpowers. Of course, some of the recipients of these abilities use them for nefarious purposes. This criminal activity lands them in a maximum-security prison run by the Overseer (Rooker). The facility’s most dangerous inmate is The Lobe, whose brain is so powerful that it threatens the planet. “Corrective Measures” is a campy and purposely cheesy affair that reminds me of the golden days of Troma Studios when “The Toxic Avenger” and “Class of Nuke’em High” were popular. I wavered whether to give this movie a “no fix” rating, but the second half is entertaining as pandemonium erupts when the prisoners figure out how to turn off the devices that remove their powers. If you know what you’re getting into, you can have a good time watching “Creative Measures.”
Arthouse Corner: The Innocents (May 13) – “The Innocents” is directed by recent Oscar-nominated writer Eskil Vogt (see last year’s transcendent “The Worst Person in the World”). This creepy-looking horror science fiction film has a group of Nordic children discovering that they have strange and powerful supernatural abilities. Of course, their playtime turns into dangerous fun when the adults aren’t looking. Downton Abbey: A New Era (May 20) – This sequel to the 2019 hit film is another spin-off of the top-rated television series. Downton becomes the set of a movie, and Lady Grantham (Maggie Smith) reveals the mystery of her adventurous past. Many recurring characters return together with fresh faces as the Crawley family enters a new period in history. How can anyone resist another helping of this addictive, enduring series?

___________________________________________________________________________________www.wintersmedia.net |November 2021|The PAPER| 19 A good Realtor that is connected to the local market should know of opportunities off the market. In other words, an experienced Realtor should know of homes for sale that are not listed in the Georgia Multiple Listing Service (GAMLS) or Zillow. This is key for buyers looking to purchase in this crazy market. You may need your Realtor to contact homeowners and send letters to properties that are not listed that interest you.

Finding A House To Buy in 2022
What is it like finding a home to purchase in 2022? You have probably heard through someone you know how competitive it is. Maybe you know from your own experience. With a low supply of listed properties and high demand to purchase, it’s a battle to find the right house for you. Finding the right house is a fight all in itself. At the time I am writing this, there are only 165 homes listed for sale in Coweta County. If you are interested in any of the properties, you can expect to compete with other buyers for the same home. I have had as many as 21, 22 and 30 offers on the same house recently. In these situations, a strong cash offer with no contingencies usually wins out the bidding war. Competing with this many buyers is not typically a formula for success. This is where your Realtor should come in.
So how “bad” is it out there? Per GAMLS, new listings were down almost six percent from March 2021 to March 2022. Active listings were down over 20 percent. Average days on market were down to 20 days from 31 days. Sales price increased by over 13 percent year over year. The supply of listings is decreasing and demand seems to remain steady. This is causing the prices to increase. If you can locate a property before it is actively listed on MLS or Zillow, you are essentially eliminating your competition for the property. This should prevent a bidding war and drastic price increases caused by that. Most property owners are aware of how strong a seller’s market we are in, and will still want top dollar for their home, even in an off-market situation. As interest rates rise, many experts expect the housing market to cool. In theory, this makes perfect sense. I am just not seeing a drastic difference here in Coweta yet. It is still highly competitive for buyers. Having a good Realtor guide you through a market like this is as important as ever. Jess Barron is an Associate Broker with Lindseys, Inc. HISTORY
Through the efforts of Rush, Dix, and their colleagues, psychiatrist practices continued to improve. By the early 1900s, practices such as the use of straitjackets were discontinued, locks and cuffs were removed from rooms, and wards were moved from the basement to hospital floors with windows and natural lighting.
with NCHS Emily Kimbell
May is Mental Health Awareness Month In 1949, the Mental Health America organization (at the time known as the National Association for Mental Health) designated May as Mental Health Awareness Month. The month was established to raise awareness surrounding mental illness and reduce stigma through education and outreach programs. Mental illnesses remain among the most common health conditions in the United States. According to the CDC, more than 50% of citizens will be diagnosed with a mental illness or disorder at some point in their life. Despite the commonality of mental illness, a stigma remains surrounding disorders complicated by a troublesome history of treatment. Rendering of Pennsylvania Hospital in its early years.
ill patients were placed in the basement complete with shackles attached to the wall. Dr. Benjamin Rush, known as “the father of American psychiatry,” worked at Pennsylvania Hospital and began revolutionizing ideas surrounding mental illness. Rush was the first to dismiss the idea of mental illness as demon-possession and rather believed that disorders were caused by hypertension in the brain’s blood vessels. His practices, however, were still borderline barbaric, often using bloodletting as a common treatment. An illustration of the pre-historic practice of Trephination.
Between the Middle Ages and the early 16th-century, people presenting mental health issues were treated as outcasts of society (at best) or viewed as witches or demon-possessed. The few who were treated for any illness were subjected to practices that are in modern times viewed as torture. Exorcism, malnutrition, and inappropriate medications were all seen as valid treatment options. Trephination, a practice that used a stone instrument to remove part of the skull, began during pre-historic times. The belief was that evil spirits could escape through the opening thus alleviating the person’s illness and returning them to normal behavior. In 1753, Quakers in Philadelphia became the first group to organize an effort to care for the mentally ill with the opening of the Pennsylvania Hospital. Room for a small number of mentally

Conditions for the mentally ill were further improved through the efforts of author, teacher, nurse, and activist Dorothea Lynde Dix (18021887). In 1841, Dix was asked to teach a Sunday School class at the East Cambridge House of Correction in Massachusetts. She was appalled by the horrible conditions at the jail and started to research treatment of prisoners and the mentally ill. In 1843, she submitted a report of her Portrait of activist Dorthea Dix findings to the Massachusetts state legislature, demanding reform. She worked as superintendent of army nurses during the Civil War in 1861 and used her experience to continue to advocate for change in the health industry. Throughout her lifetime, Dix played an

In more modern times, practices have continued to improve. In Coweta County, outpatient mental health services were available on a limited basis at the Health Department up until 1974. In mid-1975, alcohol, drug, and mental health services were combined under the title of Coweta County Mental Health with a clinic open 5 days a week. Today, mental health facilities like the Pathways Center, Willow Oak Behavioral Health Community, and Grace Harbour Behavioral Health all work toward bettering mental health care through the implementation of traditional therapeutic modalities as well as art, music, and pet therapy. Those suffering from mental health issues can call the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) National Helpline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357) for immediate assistance or reach out to one of Coweta County’s local providers. Emily is currently finishing her doctoral studies at Georgia State University, where she also teaches English Composition courses and is an active member of her community often seen on stage in local theatre productions and writing for local media outlets. n _______________________________

CHEF
…
The Chefs column highlights our local culinary masters. They share a recipe that has a lot of meaning to them and thankfully, how to make it. (Well at least most of it, sometimes secrets must remain that.) This month’s chef is … Nathan Metts.

Doors will open at 4:00 pm and FREE T-shirts are given to the first 200 adults in attendance. Over 60 exhibitors will be present to provide you with free resources, information, and services. All are welcome and encouraged to come out and support our military. New this year, the Department of Veterans Affairs will be on-site to provide general benefit information to Veterans and dependents. JOINTS
Everyone has their “go-to” place to eat. It might be with linen tablecloths and waiters in ties, or where you throw peanuts on the floor and carve your initials in the wooden tables. Whatever and wherever, it’s your “joint.” There are lots of these places around here, and we’re out to find them all in The Joints column. And yes, all are White Monkey approved.
Nathan is originally from Lakeland, Georgia and began professionally cooking in 2010. One of Nathan’s favorite recipes, especially for summer entertaining, is his Life of the South Pickled Shrimp. It is a flavorful hors d’oeuvre that gets better the longer it marinates.
Luxport Shuttle will be available from 3:30pm-7:15pm, follow parking signs and look for the shuttle stop.

The Coweta County Ferst Foundation mission is to provide a free monthly age-appropriate book for every child under the age of five in Coweta County. Visit our website for more information: cowetaferst.org
Did You Know? • 61% of low-income families do not have a single piece of age-appropriate reading material in their home? • 1/3rd of Georgia’s children start school unprepared to learn? • 75% of Georgia’s students who are poor readers in the third grade will remain poor readers in high school?
How Do Books Help? The more words a child hears, the larger the child’s vocabulary and the larger the child’s vocabulary, the more likely the child will be a proficient reader. However, in order to read with a child, books must be in the home. Coweta Ferst Foundation, P.O. Reading has always been a cornerstone of my life. My mother encouraged me and my four sisters to read all the time. We were even allowed to read at the table during meals! Since I have been working at the Carnegie Library it has been my joy to share my love of reading and books with our community. I moderate the Carnegie’s Literary Circle Book Club, which meets on the fourth Monday of the month at 10 a.m. We read a variety of books in different genres and all members get to suggest and vote on books. We have such wonderful discussions. It’s heartwarming to see how the love of reading can build friendships. I also love sharing book reviews with our online community. If you visit the Carnegie’s YouTube page at https://www.youtube.com/c/NewnanCarnegieLibrary you can find over 100 video reviews from Carnegie staff. You will only see reviews for books we love and recommend. I read books in an assortment of genres so there’s lots of reviews to choose from based on what you enjoy. There are no spoilers in any of the videos so you can watch them without fear of the book being ruined. Another thing I love is helping people find the perfect book when they come to the Carnegie. Tell us what you like and we can find a book that will fit you. And if we don’t have it in our collection we can probably order it for you or find someone who does have it. It is such a joy to connect people with a book. And it’s even better when they come back and tell you how much they enjoyed it! Sharing a love of books can bring a whole community together. I love attending the Decatur Book Festival. A few years ago, Carnegie Young Adult Programmer Elizabeth Ruppel and I were discussing how Newnan would be a perfect place to do a smaller version of the Book Festival. We enlisted the help of the Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation and out of that discussion came the Southern LitFest! It was originally scheduled for June 2020. Well, we all know how that went. We will finally be presenting the LitFest this June 3-5. We have some amazing authors visiting Newnan including Sean Dietrich, Karen White, and Chris Joyner. We will have a lot of fun events including a Lewis Grizzard impersonator and a 3 Little Pigs trial at the Coweta County Courthouse. All these events will be free! You can find out more at SouthernLitFest.com.
