Happy month of Thanks, friends! I have recently decided to end my tenure of more than four years writing a monthly column in The Paper. Per some excellent advice, I am including my Facebook announcement below so you can see why I made this decision.

❆❆❆❆

Thursday, October 5th was the day I was promoted to General Manager of the company I love most in the whole world. Since you know my story, you know that me coming from humble beginnings is a drastic understatement. As a child we moved constantly - even in the same town - and my family lived paycheck to paycheck for lots of reasons. Same was true for Keith, for even different reasons. And that was the last thing we wanted for our children. So, we decided to plant ourselves and once we were finally able to be stable, we had peace in breaking the multitude of cycles we grew up in so our kids had the best chance. Greg was the catalyst that cemented all of that for me. He took a chance on me when advised not to. I took a chance on him by taking a drastic pay cut and becoming a marketing coordinator with no marketing budget. I grew as a person, we grew as a company. He took more chances on me as I continued to show him what I was capable of. And it’s not just me, he is an amazing person with a mentor’s heart and our entire team has been blessed to see it again and again. He once told me he thought God brought me to him. I know God brought me to him and this company.

Sometimes we just have to believe that when we do the right things and surround ourselves with good people, good things will happen to us. We have to trust other people if we’re going to move forward in life. All of us have our unique Journey, none of us do it alone.

My goal in writing this column for over four years was to encourage everyone reading that they CAN DO ANYTHING they want to. No matter what roadblocks, speed limits or seemingly impossible tasks lie ahead. Doesn’t matter what your background is. What matters is who you are and the choices you make. Starting today and then day in, day out. At any point we can make another decision to change the trajectory of our lives. We decide our destination. We decide what the next chapter of our lives look like. Don’t ever allow anyone else to take that power away from you. Especially your own inner voice.

So with that friends, my column will come to an end with unlimited thankfulness in my heart. My Journey will continue as will all of yours. I hope to pop in again, here and there. And I look forward to seeing all of you living your best life in the most amazing community there ever was.

Interview

Dogs or cats? I’ve had both but I’d say cats.

with Valerie Dumas

Your favorite quote and why. Be a Fruit Loop in a sea of Cheerios…

Briefly describe yourself and what you do/did.

Name something that you are extremely glad you did or accomplished.

My name is Valerie Dumas and I own Gillyweeds, which is a gift boutique on the square in downtown Newnan (between Leaf & Bean and Fabiano’s Pizzeria). We’ve been in business since 2012 and sell gifts, clothing and other cool things!

In college I toured with a drum corp for 3 summers…Florida Wave, Suncoast Sound, and Orlando Magic. I was on the color guard team. What advice would you give your younger self just starting out on their own?

Best piece of advice you’ve received. Don’t be a screen door on a submarine.

If it’s not going to be relevant in five years, don’t spend more than five minutes worrying about it. 

If I had it to do over … Be better with money and buy real estate when it was cheap. You are going on an extended solo trip. What three albums and three books would you take? Truth be told, I’m not a big reader and don’t really have any favorites in music. I’ve only been to 5 concerts in my life! But I would take a beachy read from Mary Kay Andrews and listen to Jimmy Buffet or old school ‘80s hip hop.

Valerie Dumas, Gillyweeds owner

Tell us one thing about yourself that few people know.

If you weren’t doing what you are, you would be …

Every week I mill my own flour from whole wheat grains to make the most delicious breads.

Gosh that’s tough… I’ve always wanted to have my own store ever since I was a teenager so I’m living my dream.

You are hosting a dinner party for six. What five people, living or dead, would you invite and why.

Your go-to food.

I’m a huge introvert so I wouldn’t host one.

Ceviche if offered at a restaurant and eggplant parmesan if I’m cooking at home.

Name an as yet unfulfilled dream.

Favorite movies(s).

Owning property at the beach.

I don’t watch movies more than once so I don’t have “favorites” but I do love everything M. Night Shyamalan makes.

Notes from Perry Street

The

John A. Winters, Publisher, Editor john@wintersmedia.net

The holidays can be fun and exciting, but they can also be crazy, hectic and stressful. For some, it is a sad and lonely time for those who have lost loved ones or are dealing with broken relationships. Holidays, especially Thanksgiving and Christmas, can be full of joy and happiness, or grief and loss.

Corby Carlin Winters, Ambassador At Large corby@wintersmedia.net Joey Howard, Digital Editor / Sales 404.698.0734 joey@wintersmedia.net

As many of you know, my education is in counseling. I have also been in full-time ministry and am a Life Coach. During the holiday season I have seen just about every emotion from my clients, church members and my own family.

During this holiday season, it is okay to say you are not okay. Sometimes we need to take time for ourselves, and that may Corby and John Christmas circa 1993 include taking a break from social media. Some of those sites highlight this utopia that other families have. In truth, they create unrealistic standards no one can meet.

It is also important to keep things in perspective. My dear friend Carol taught me that year ago. The question is just how big is this problem on a scale of 1-10. If it is a lower number, then just let it go. Her point was to determine what was really important, what was worth fighting for in the whole scheme of things. In the midst of it all she chose joy. This powerful advice came from a woman whose 22-year-old daughter, and my dear friend, was kidnapped and murdered. It is okay to show ourselves as much grace as we should show to others. Sometimes we need to cry and other times call a friend for moral support or a laugh. Sometimes we need to create new memories and new traditions and sometimes celebrate the old ones.

My mom passed away in June 2009 and a year later my dad died two weeks before Thanksgiving. The only time the family could all get together was the week of Thanksgiving 2010 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. While most of America was preparing their stuffing and turkey, I was making flower arrangements to place at the altar and we were writing Daddy’s obituary, wondering if we should include that he died of dementia-related illnesses. Sometimes we have to work around life.

Winters, The SONSs, extended family and friends gathered to celebrate the life of Dr. Milton O. Carlin that Thanksgiving eve. We laughed, we cried. I served candy circus peanuts and black liquorice and peppermints, which were all his favorites.

The SONs, who were very young at the time, had a marvelous time. We stayed at the Embassy Suites and every morning we ate omelets at this huge buffet and the SONs swam with friends and family. They said it was their favorite vacation ever. I know that would make my dad very happy.

Later that evening, family got together at a place called the Sushi Train. You sat at long oval tables and a toy train carrying various dishes would come by on an oval truck and you grabbed what dish you wanted. It was like a scene out of Seinfeld. That day we chose joy, love and happiness with grief scattered around. My faith and hope grew much stronger the Christmas of 2012, all due to one family who showed indescribable faith through their loss. The Bacho family and their three daughters had gone skating then to mass and were out enjoying the Christmas lights when a truck ran through a red light and hit their van. It was three days before Christmas. Natalie’s husband Stephen and their daughter Abby were airlifted to Atlanta. Stephen was in an induced coma for four weeks. On Christmas Day Abby’s organs were donated so others could live.

In her honor, the family has created Abby’s Angels Foundation, which does a multitude of things, including teen driving schools and providing “Abby’s Closets” at every school in Coweta County where students can get free school supplies.

I was so honored and blessed to sing at the prayer We rarely ever really know what any individual or family is breakfast in Newnan before Natalie Bacho shared her experiencing during the holidays. But this holiday season, powerful story of Loss, Love, Healing and Hope. Abby whatever your circumstances, I wish you much love, joy, peace, life lives on and Abby’s Angels will be changing lives for gentleness, forgiveness, hope, grace, and kindness. You can generations to come. soak in all ins and also pour out to others. Be a part of changing the world and let God use all of your story for God’s glory. #pureempowerment #preciousgifts #abbysangels

Featured Joint …

Everyone has their “go-to” place to eat. It might be with linen tablecloths and waiters in ties, or where you throw peanuts on the floor and carve your initials in the wooden tables. Whatever and wherever, it’s your “joint.” This month’s featured joint is …

Circa Coffee

The Little Black Dress calls this the perfect shopping experience. Browse through some high-end antiques, then walk through the doorway for some coffee, sandwiches and absurdly delicious desserts. If this sounds like heaven to you, head on over to Tyrone and Circa Antiques, with the adjoining Circa Coffee. It is becoming quite the meeting place for the surrounding area. Consider it a coffee house on steroids. The owner used to work for Delta Airlines, and there are plenty of airplane and lounge seats available. We tried the chicken salad sandwich, the ham and cheese croissant, and a caprese salad on sourdough bread. They were all very tasty. And their banana bread is off the charts.

They’ve got some big cookies that we will have to hit next time. And for all those wondering, there is wifi and they have the password on the counter for you. It’s a great place and comfortable place to have coffee with friends, or salivate over some desserts. ABOUT

Are Made of This

This month, we welcome Natalia Grogorovich and her new family business, The Cake House, to Newnan. Natalia and her family are Ukrainian refugees, who fled the war and recently moved to Newnan – she and her younger son in September 2022, her older son in Spring 2023, and her husband this past September. With the help of Welcome.US, and her sponsors Alex and Christy Kuriatnyk, the family was able to come to the safety of the U.S. A year later, they are opening a bakery. On September 28, the family hosted a tasting for the community, and plans to open soon. The Cake House is located at 18 Jackson Street, Suite A., in downtown Newnan. Natalia was gracious enough to answer some questions for us via an email translator:

KA: What inspired you to become a baker? NG: Inspiration for dessert decor is all around us. In every detail. But the recipe is completely different. I don’t like desserts with a lot of sugar. Because it kills all the taste and you don’t taste the dessert. And you just eat sugar. In my desserts, I reduce the amount of sugar or replace it with high-quality chocolate. And yet, the key to a delicious dessert is high-quality products. KA: What makes a bakery successful? NG: In Ukraine we had a bakery. But due to the situation in the country, we closed everything. We had no choice. A successful pastry chef is a titanic work. You are a buyer of goods, a manager, a dishwasher and a cleaner... Sometimes you don’t have time for your family. This profession is not for everyone. It’s hard work and you have to love it. I like to do it. To be successful, you need to not be afraid of work and always develop.

KA: Congratulations! When will you open for business and what will you offer? NG: I can’t say the exact opening date. We’re in the process. Perhaps on the day the newspaper is published, we will already be open. Our bakery will have many different desserts, traditional and European. There is no dessert that I cannot make. KA: Why open a bakery in Newnan? NG: This is [thanks to] the people dearest to me, Christy Kuriatnyk and Alex Kuriatnyk. And another lovely woman, Kathy Hoffman, who once had her own bakery. They helped make my dream come true and brought me back to life.

KA: What is your favorite dessert? NG: I have many favorite desserts. I love light mousse cakes and macarons. I really love the combination of sweet and sour. For example, milk chocolate with mango and passion fruit, Chocolateraspberry – there are actually a lot of them. For American desserts, ice cream is very tasty...as for Brownies, I can’t say that I tried it here. Brownies are known all over the world. And I baked it when I lived in Ukraine. And yes I love them. KA: How do you like living in Newnan? NG: Newnan is very nice and calm. After the war, I needed just such a city. Newnan showed me a different side of America. And everything I heard before coming here. It changed my mind. Very kind and good people live here. And in general, this country helps everyone who needs help. I am very glad to all my customers and all the guests of our bakery. And if you want to eat a delicious and high-quality dessert, come to us. We are very glad to see you.

Coweta Schools Graduation Rate at 91.7 percent in 2023

From Coweta Schools Press Release The percentage of Coweta County School System high school students graduating on-time rose to 91.7 percent for the class of 2023. That reflects a 1.2 percent increase in Coweta’s overall graduation rate in 2023 over 2022, according to a report released by the Georgia Department of Education on Tuesday. Coweta County’s overall graduation rate was more than 7 percent higher than the state of Georgia’s 2023 rate, which also increased from 2022 to 2023. The graduation rate tracks the percentage of high school students who graduate within four and five years of entering high school. The report also indicates the second year in a

row of graduation rate increases among Coweta County high school students, and Coweta County Assessment and Accountability Director Jillian Andrew noted that Coweta’s average graduation rate for 2023 was a record for Coweta Schools. This year’s 91.7 percent rate slightly tops the Coweta County School System’s previous high of 91.6 percent, reported in 2020. Andrew noted that all three of Coweta’s high schools posted rates of over 90 percent. Individually, East Coweta High School posted a 2023 graduation rate of 90.8 percent, Newnan High a rate of 91.7 percent, and Northgate a rate of 93.8 percent. “Graduation rate isn’t just about high school.

It’s representative of the great work that goes on Pre-K through 12th grade,” said Coweta Superintendent Evan Horton. “I couldn’t be more proud of the work that’s going on across our system.” Both Georgia and Coweta County graduation rates have seen overall increases since the state began using the four and five year “cohort graduation rate” as a standard measure, as required by federal law. “I’m incredibly proud of Georgia’s high-school seniors – and the teachers, leaders, and families who have supported them to produce these results,” State School Superintendent Richard Woods said. “It’s important to remember that the

positive news we’ve received lately – from this historic-high graduation rate to Georgia students beating the national average on the SAT – is more than just numbers. Every data point represents an actual student and new opportunities that have opened up for their future. I’m confident we’ll continue to see positive results as we invest in academic recovery and building a studentcentered educational system.” Coweta County’s graduation rate has remained consistently above the state average during that period, despite having higher standards for graduation under its block scheduling system than most Georgia school districts.

n The Meaning of Green

Green is the color of hope, renewal and well-being.Green Light is also a term commonly used to activate forward movement. The simple action of changing one light to green is intended to spark a national conversation regarding the recognition of veterans, and “greenlight” them forward as valued members of our communities.

n What is Greenlight a Vet?

America’s veterans are some of our nation’s bravest, hardest-working men and women. However, it is hard to show them the appreciation they deserve when, back home and out of uniform; they are more camouflaged than ever. Greenlight a Vet is a campaign to establish visible national support for our veterans by changing one light to green.

n Change One Light to Green

Let us honor our veterans not only on November 11th, but all month long by changing one light to green in a visible location - on your porch, your home, or at your office - and keep it glowing every day as a symbol of appreciation and support for our veterans. To help share your support, take a picture of your green light and post it using the hashtag #greenlightavet. Sponsored by:

Please allow me to briefly introduce or reacquaint you with this valuable resource. Georgia Library Learning Online, more commonly known as GALILEO, is a virtual library operated by the University System of Georgia. There are over 100 core databases available, offering full text access to journals, magazines, e-books, government information, primary documents, and more. The Digital Library of Georgia is also part of the GALILEO system. These databases have resources that cover all age and educational interests. If you just want to surf (do people still say surf?) sites like Mango Languages, Novelist Plus, and Ancestry Plus, there is much to peruse and enjoy. Here is the cool part for Coweta citizens. Beginning November 1, any Coweta citizen using their Coweta library card will be able to access Galileo from home using their library card and Pin #. If you have used the site before, you know that up until now you have had to rely on finding the quarterly password from your local library. And, if you do not have a card with us, you can simply hit the link at the bottom of the page to be taken to our catalog site which will let you get an e-card for access right then and there. Galileo sets Georgia apart on an education and information level so check it out this month and take advantage of what is a true bargain----FREE right from our website! Before I sign off, I have had folks ask me for more book recommendations so here goes: Reykjavik by Ragnar Jonnason - I love Nordic noir and this one had me burning the midnight oil. Dedicated to Agatha Christie, this slow burning whodunnit perfectly encapsulates a growing Iceland and the secrets hidden under its beautiful skies. Good Bad Girl by Alice Feeney - Psychological suspense with more twists and turns than a 60’s doowop group. You will think you have figured it out several times before finishing but you will be wrong! America Fantastica by Tim O’Brien - A desperate bank robbery is the background to superb storyteller O’Brien’s latest work. A cross country odyssey with an unflinching look at modern America and the author’s acerbic wit sets this one off… Thanks for reading! Check out Galileo and read something good this month! Doctors Speak with Community about Lung Cancer and How Early Detection Through Screening Can Catch When Treatable

On October 24, Piedmont Newnan Hospital hosted a Dinner with a Doc in the Thomas F. Chapman Cancer Wellness Center to educate the community about lung cancer, its risk factors and how early detection can help reduce the number of deaths that occur from lung cancer. Windy Dean-Colomb, M.D., medical oncologist, Diana Santiago, M.D., radiation oncologist, and Shankar Kandaswamy, M.D., Pulmonologist, all participated in the panel discussion, led by Marsha Suber, director of oncology services at Piedmont Newnan.

Major risk factors for lung cancer include tobacco use and exposure to cancer-causing substances. These substances include many chemicals, gases, and inhaled dust particles found commonly both in the workplace and the environment. To help detect lung cancer earlier and increase the chances of longterm survival, Piedmont Oncology offers lung cancer screenings using low-dose computed tomography (CT) scans of the lungs for high-risk individuals.

According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 226,000 new cases of lung cancer are diagnosed in the U.S. each year. Known as the “silent killer,” lung cancer can develop without symptoms early in the disease. Most cases of lung cancer are found in later stages without any symptoms.

School Principal, Mom of Two, Hopes to Bring Awareness to Breast Cancer

Just seven months ago, Dr. Malika Gonzales received news she never thought she would hear: She had breast cancer. During a self-breast exam, Gonzales, 44, felt a lump, and with no family history of breast cancer and always having normal mammograms, she went solely on her gut and scheduled a visit to her doctor. With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Gonzales hopes this month serves as a reminder that it can happen to anyone and that women should listen to their bodies if something doesn’t feel right. Since turning 40, Gonzales has scheduled her annual mammogram for November. The screenings had not detected any sign of cancer, just that she had dense breast tissue. In January of this year, Gonzales started feeling a weird sensation in her right breast and just a month later pain in her nipple. When she performed a self-exam, she found a lump the size of a grape. “I knew something was wrong when I felt the lump and knew I needed to get it checked out,” said Gonzales. She immediately saw her OBGYN, who referred her to have an ultrasound and biopsy. That’s when she found out she had stage 1 breast cancer. “I want to tell women to be aware of their bodies and listen and be their own advocate,” said Gonzales. “Age doesn’t matter, we need to be diligent in doing self-exams and knowing when something isn’t right and get it checked out immediately.” With her diagnosis of breast cancer, Gonzales was immediately referred to Windy Dean-Colomb, M.D., medical oncologist at Piedmont Physicians Medical Oncology in Newnan. “When I initially found out it was a shock, but I just had to have faith,” said Gonzales. “Dr. Dean put a plan in place and made me feel comfortable. She is very communicative and always takes time to talk to me.” Gonzales’ care plan included chemotherapy, a double mastectomy which removes both breasts entirely, immunotherapy infusions, and she will soon start radiation. “It is important to have a village of positive people to support you through your journey,” says Gonzales. “Chemo was hard and you have to have help. I am so thankful to my family, friends and coworkers who have supported me these past few months.” As a wife, mother of two girls, and a school principal, Gonzales keeps busy and is surrounding herself with positivity and faith. “During chemotherapy I couldn’t eat and lost 27 pounds, so now I am enjoying eating again,” she says. “I had to go to the emergency room a few times and Dr. Dean took time to come see me and check on me.” Before her radiation starts, Gonzales has been taking time to do self-care and enjoys reading, watching television shows, and being outside and breathing in the fresh air. She hopes her story resonates with others, as it shows how important it is to take notice of any changes in your body and not to ignore these changes. To schedule a mammogram, visit piedmontmammo.org.

CT lung screening is a test that takes just a few minutes. Research indicates that early detection with a CT screening may reduce the odds of lung cancer death by up to 20% compared to conventional X-rays.

To qualify for a CT Lung Screening, a patient needs to meet the following criteria: • Age 50-77 • Smoking history of 20 pack years (one pack a day for 20 years or two packs a day for 10 years) • Current smoker or stopped in the last 15 years or less • No current pulmonary symptoms, such as worsening cough, coughing up blood, or shortness of breath • No unexplained weight loss If you think you may be at risk for lung cancer, call your primary care physician or a pulmonologist to see if you meet the eligibility criteria for a low-dose CT (LDCT) screening exam.

Piedmont Newnan Offers Innovative Treatment for Enlarged Prostate

This October, Piedmont Newnan Hospital became the second hospital in the Piedmont system to perform Aquablation, an innovative, minimally-invasive surgical procedure to treat an enlarged prostate. Using traditional visual imaging as well as robotic technology, a surgeon controls a heat-free waterjet to remove problematic prostate tissue that is obstructing the bladder. “Aquablation doesn’t require an incision and takes less than an hour to complete,” said Roger Chen, M.D., a urologist with Piedmont Physicians Newnan Urology who, along with Micah Blackmon, M.D., performs the procedure at Piedmont Newnan. “We’re able to operate with precision, tailoring to the patient’s anatomy, so there are fewer complications and a faster recovery time.” Symptoms of an enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, are frequent urination or difficulty emptying your bladder. Left untreated, an enlarged prostate can lead to urinary tract infections, bladder stones, and damage to the kidneys. “Men with these symptoms are often concerned with side effects from surgery, specifically incontinence and sexual dysfunction,” said Dr. Chen. “Because we have two types of imaging at use in this procedure, we can see the entire prostate in real time and help prevent side effects. This procedure has a very low rate of irreversible complications and has been proven to provide years of relief from symptoms.” For more information on Aquablation, call 770- 400-4630 or visit piedmont.org/urology.

Real Estate Es tate

Should I Buy Or Rent?

You may have asked yourself this question before or you might be asking yourself right now. The answer to this question all depends on your current situation in life, finances, where you live and your future plans. Let’s start with your current situation. Are you single? Are you married and expecting children? A home may be the right choice

Another question is to ask yourself do you have the cash on hand needed for a down payment to purchase? Depending on your financial situation, you can expect to put down a minimum of three to five percent of the purchase price. There are 100% financing plans like a VA loan, if you are a veteran, and USDA, if you are purchasing a home in a qualified rural area. Contacting a local mortgage lender is a great first step. The lender can qualify you for a loan and walk you through the process. They will look at your income, the amount of debt you have, your credit score, etc. to determine what you qualify for. Where you live and the current real estate market are important factors in your decision to lease or purchase. What does the current market look like? Are home prices up or down? What about lease

rates? In Coweta County right now, both home prices and rental prices are up. Despite a decrease in the number of buyers and contracts, home prices have stayed up. Rental prices are up as well. You can expect to pay around $1,300 a month for a 1BR, 1BA apartment and around $1,600 a month for a 2 BR, 2BA apartment in Newnan. For comparison, a monthly mortgage payment on a $300,000 purchase with 10% down at 7.25% would be $1,841.88. Taxes and insurance can vary but this will give you a general idea of what to expect as far as monthly payments. Perhaps the most important factor in your decision are your own future plans. Do you plan to stay where you currently live for the next several years? A good rule of thumb of renting vs buying is that it takes at least a few years to allow purchasing a home to be the better option, financially, than renting and to build equity in your home. The longer you stay in your home, the more the value of the property will increase and the more your home will be worth in the future versus what you paid for it. Also, you will not be taxed for capital gains when you sell the property if your home has been your primary residence two of the last five years. This is a big plus for purchasing a home.

The Film Fix … Streaming Edition

with Jonathan W. Hickman

Capsule Reviews … New Rating System - A “Fix" is recommended with a rating between 6 and 10! a “No Fix” with ratings of 1 to 5 isn’t. http://dailyfilmfix.com/ Jonathan W. Hickman is an entertainment attorney, filmmaker, college professor, and novelist. More about Jonathan can be found by visiting http://filmproductionlaw.com/

In Theaters: Priscilla (in theaters now) – l NO Fix Rating 5/10 — Last year, we got “Elvis,” Baz Luhrmann’s highly stylized fantasy about Elvis Presley. That film, which was nominated for 8 Academy Awards, cast Elvis as the victim of his manipulative manager, the weirdly mysterious Colonel Tom Parker. With “Priscilla,” director Sofia Coppola flips the script and focuses on Elvis’ creepy relationship with his teenage wife, Priscilla. Although an effort is made to explain the love affair between Priscilla (played by Cailee Spaeny) and Elvis, it is impossible not to come away from the film feeling that Elvis victimized his bride. After all, Priscilla was just 14 years old when the much older musician began dating her. Coppola, the talented daughter of iconic filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, plays the story too safe. The script is based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me.” And Priscilla serves as one of the film’s producers. This connection to the production may have tied Coppola’s hands and restrained her from digging deeper into the unpleasant aspects of Elvis and his treatment of his wife. The result is a sad, often meandering, and even lifeless movie that drives home Priscilla’s isolation at the expense of profound revelations and raw entertainment value.

Streaming Selects: Lawmen: Bass Reeves (November 5) — Although “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan is not a writer on this Paramount western, he does serve as an executive producer. Based on the true story of the first African American to serve as a deputy US Marshall, megatalented actor David Oyelowo (see 2014’s “Selma”) takes the lead playing lawman Bass Reeves. The deep cast includes Dennis Quaid, Barry Pepper, Shea Whigham, and Donald Sutherland.

Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain (November 17) – The comedy team behind some of Saturday Night Live’s classic digital shorts brings their comic sensibilities to the big screen with “The Treasure of Foggy Mountain.” The story is about three friends who try to change their lives by finding a gold treasure allegedly buried in a mountain near where they live. The trailers are quirky and really funny.

formerly HBO Max): How to be a Bookie (season premiere November 30) – After falling flat earlier this year with his romantic comedy “About My Father,” popular comedian Sebastian Maniscalco looks to rebound with this Chuck Lorre (see “The Big Bang Theory” and “Two and a Half Men”) created series. The story is about a bookie who is dealing with the upcoming legalization of sports betting. Even though this series is supposedly being released in November, no trailer or even a poster was available online as of deadline.

The Killer (November 10) – l Fix Rating 7/10 – Director David Fincher (see “Se7en” and “Fight Club”) delivers a slick, efficient, and amusing yarn about a contract killer (played with quiet cool by Michael Fassbender).

When the killer botches a job, he becomes expendable to his organization. Naturally, he must take out all those who seek to erase him. The derivative story, based on a French graphic novel, is given the royal treatment as Fincher’s “Mank” Oscar-winning cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt provides the production an edgy look. But in the director’s filmography, “The Killer” is minor Fincher. The directing auteur, responsible for the likes of “The Social Network,” takes a break from his heavy and dramatically essential projects (like his last Netflix outing, “Mank”) to deliver an entertaining adventure that’s just smart enough to pull in the arthouse crowd. This one may not win many awards, but it should be a hit with Netflix subscribers looking for an upmarket thriller.

Invincible (season 2, part 1, November 3) – More than two years have passed since the last episode of “Invincible,” and fans have been champing at the bit for more of the story of teen Mark Grayson (voice of Steven Yeun), as he deals with high school and his superhero father Nolan (voice of J.K. Simmons). Mark’s powers emerged in season one, and he clashed with dear old Dad and other villains in this terrific animated series. The first half of season 2 will premiere this year, with the second half in 2024.

The Santa Clauses (season 2, November 8) – Tim Allen returns to play the title character he inhabited way back in 1994. In season two, Santa will encounter a new threat in the form of Magnus Antas, or “The Mad Santa,” played by “Modern Family’s” Eric Stonestreet. And “Lost” star Elizabeth Mitchell returns as Mrs. Claus.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (November 17) – l Fix Rating 7/10 —– There’s always more to a monster story than we’re told. Sometimes lost in the kaiju tales is the human factor that was explored somewhat in the 1956 original “Godzilla, King of the Monsters!” When “Godzilla” was rebooted in the English language in 2014, the emotional opening sequence hinted at a return to the high drama that saturated the first film in the franchise. And this series takes its time developing the story on the ground after the monsters emerge and wreak havoc. The diverse cast of actors includes Kurt Russell and his son Wyatt, who play the same character in two time periods. This show is a bit of a slow burn, but it’s certainly worth your time, especially if you grew up with Godzilla and enjoyed the latest incarnation of the intellectual property.

Theatrical Teasers: Showdown at the Grand (November 10) – Terrence Howard plays a movie theater owner who, with the help of an aging action star played by Dolph Lundgren, defends his property from a violent corporation in this fun-looking, throwback b-movie thriller. The Marvels (November 10) – Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan join forces in the latest MCU adventure that has the three heroes’ powers entangled while they struggle to work together to, you guessed it, save the universe. The Holdovers (November 10) – Director Alexander Payne (see “Election” and “Nebraska”) reteams with his “Sideways” star Paul Giamatti for the story of a history teacher who spends the holidays on campus with a troubled student. After its festival run, “The Holdovers” is garnering awards season attention, especially for the always terrific Giamatti. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (November 17) – This prequel to the blockbuster “Hunger Games” franchise focuses on the origin story of Coriolanus Snow (played by Donald Sutherland in the previous films). Young talents Rachel Zegler and Tom Blyth star alongside Viola Davis and Peter Dinklage. Thanksgiving (November 17) – Director Eli Roth expands to feature length the mock-trailer that appeared in the “Grindhouse” film in 2007. This grizzly-looking but comic holiday-themed slasher tells the story of a killer who appears after a Black Friday riot. Wish (November 22) – Disney delivers a new animated adventure about a young girl named Asha (voiced by Oscar-winner Ariana DeBose) who makes a wish upon a star, and then the star comes down and visits her. The voice cast is deep with Evan Peters, Chris Pine, Alan Tudyk, Harvey Guillén, and others. Napoleon (November 22) – Ridley Scott directs Joaquin Phoenix in this epic biography of Napoleon Bonaparte. This one looks sumptuous and is bound to generate awards notice. Maestro (November 22) – Another awards contender gets its qualifying run with Netflix’s Oscar hopeful “Maestro.” Bradley Cooper directs and stars as famed conductor-composer Leonard Bernstein. Much attention has centered on Carey Mulligan’s turn as Bernstein’s wife, Felicia. The moving trailers tease the film’s classic 1.33:1 or 4:3 aspect ratio and part of it in black and white. Mr. Personality Newnan’s Goodwill Ambassador

November: The highlights for this month are Daylight Savings ends on the 5th, Election Day is on the 7th, Veteran’s Day is on the 11th, and Thanksgiving is on the 23rd. I love Thanksgiving Day, and I am sad that it is often disrespected due to football games and early Christmas shopping. I am sad that Christmas, Christ Day, is

reduced to nothing more than a shopping spree. The many traditions of my childhood seems to be going the way of the buffalo, and that too is sad. Halloween is now becoming more popular than Christmas. I miss my childhood holidays and my childhood cartoons, as well as the innocence of the times. Even the comic books of yesteryear are no more. The church is too being transformed into a coffee-and-donuts social club, and our world leaders have forgotten why they were elected. I mourn for the America I grew up in. I was born in 1949; no, it was less than perfect, but much better than where we are now going.

I love that we have a new, updated toy store in Newnan. It is located on 4 Greenville Street, and the phone number is 678590-1083. The owner is Amber Hinson of Pink Flamingo Kids,

a store that you should experience for yourself (attention to all grandmothers.) Shopping on The Square is indeed shopping local and shopping small. The Court House Square and the Carnegie Library are truly the pride of Newnan. I love the Courthouse Square and all that it has to offer in the way of small-town hospitality.

This is my last installment on my essay on self-talk, in which I will enter a surprise topic next month to conclude my essay on self-talk. You may want to fact-check all the information you hear, all reporters were at one time required to fact-check all news before reporting it to the public. That no longer seems to be the practice anymore. People are happy to say or repeat information without checking that it is indeed true; that used to be called gossip! Save yourself endless problems by checking the facts.

My book of the month is titled “Rethinking Religion” by Will Deming. The purpose of this book is to demystify religion. It is a study on six religious traditions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and primal religions. To study these six religions does not mean to practice or agree with them, but to better one’s relationship with others is to understand their language and their religion. These are two of the most simple suggestions that are proven to be effective. We must suspend our judgement and see things from the other person’s point of view. The reason one should study all known religions is to better understand the people that practice them. To study other religions is not to endorse them; by understanding others is to better understand ourselves. Until next time Peace, love, and much respect Mr. Personality

WGTC Nursing stages Simulated Mass Casualty Event in Newnan

From WGTC Press Release The West Georgia Technical College (WGTC) School of Nursing recently conducted a successful simulated mass casualty event, showcasing its commitment to preparing students for real-world healthcare scenarios. The event was held at WGTC’s Coweta campus in Newnan and aimed to provide nursing students with invaluable hands-on experience in managing and responding to large-scale emergency situations. By simulating a mass casualty event, students were able to apply their knowledge and skills in a dynamic and highpressure environment, ultimately enhancing

their readiness to serve the community. The nursing faculty created lifelike scenarios, mimicking emergencies such as natural disasters, accidents, and other mass casualty incidents. Students were challenged to prioritize patient care and make critical decisions. Linsey Fielder, Dean of the School of Nursing, said, “This simulated mass casualty event is a testament to our commitment to preparing our nursing students for the unexpected challenges they may face in their careers. It not only provided valuable experiential learning but also encouraged teamwork and problem-solving.” The event involved not only nursing students,

faculty, and staff but also students, faculty, and staff from other programs within the College. The Emergency Medical Services program aided in arranging the event and assessed patients in the field. Students in the Esthetics program used moulage makeup to give the mass casualty victims lifelike injuries. Air Evac Lifeteam, a helicopter air ambulance service, also joined the event. Their crew simulated airlifting patients with life-threatening injuries to ensure they reached the hospital quickly. “The innovative simulated mass casualty event organized by our nursing faculty is a

testament to our commitment to excellence in education,” WGTC President Dr. Julie Post said. “By providing our nursing students with real-world, hands-on experience in crisis management and patient care, we are shaping future healthcare professionals who are not just well-prepared but also compassionate and capable of making a difference when it matters most.” For more information about the West Georgia Technical College School of Nursing, please visit www.westgatech.edu or contact Linsey Fielder, Dean of the School of Nursing, at Linsey.Fielder@westgatech.edu.
