Notes from Jackson Street
I walk through the door with the nurse and in moments she has my breast nice and tight in an x-ray machine for my yearly mammogram. Moments later she says , “Mrs. Winters, don’t breathe, don’t move … NOW Breathe… DON’T BREATHE, DON’T MOVE.
And I’m thinking to myself, “Really, how can I move?” My breast is smashed flat as a pancake. Trust me, I couldn’t move and I wasn’t going anywhere.
I feel like I’ve heard that phrase, “don’t breathe, don’t move,” more than a million times throughout my life. Taking care of your health and being your best involves hearing those words many times over a woman’s lifetime.
One mammogram many years back was, at first, like all the others. Twenty minutes of the “don’t move, don’t breathe” routine. After we finished, the nurse looked at me and said, “We will call you if anything seems out of the norm within two or three days.” Two to three days feels like an eternity to a woman after a mammogram.
And like clockwork, three days later while I was shopping away in one of my favorite stores and having the best old time, I got a call …
“Mrs. Winters?”
“Yes.” I said.
Me and Mom
“We need you to come back,” the nurse said. “We need to take a few more images.”
My knees went weak and I held back some tears. I said to myself, “Do not freak out. Don’t overreact. It is probably nothing, but who knows, maybe not. It wasn’t nothing for many other women.”
As I headed to the hospital the second time around I wasn’t quite sure what to pray. But I prayed anyway. I prayed I was healthy. I prayed the doctors and nurses had great wisdom and discernment. Then I simply said “Lord whatever I face and whatever the tests show we face it together.”
So here I go. I was back for more images … don’t breathe, don’t move … Don’t Breathe, Don’t Move …NOW Breathe, DON’T BREATHE, DON’T MOVE. Again, I am thinking, “How could I breathe or move when my breast is flattened like a pancake and … the same routine.
Fortunately, they did not find anything in that second checkup.
And now, we have 3D imaging mammograms available. These machines require much fewer images and provide greater clarity. So needless to say you will hear “don’t breathe, don’t move” a whole lot less.
During this month of Breast Cancer Awareness, I want to lift up the families of those who have lost loved ones to breast cancer. And we also want to celebrate all the breast cancer survivors.
I have so many friends who are breast cancer survivors and many discovered their own cancer. My dear friend Vonda from high school was just 40 years old when she found her own lump and she had a double mastectomy. She is alive and well, 16 years cancer-free. Emily Chandler Westergreen, owner of Underground Runway, was just 37 when she discovered she had breast cancer, she had a double mastectomy and has been cancer free five years now! Donna Owen, who is the owner of Parlor 34 Hair was 45 and then 60 when she had breast cancer and is now almost two years cancer free. I share their stories to give us all hope and encouragement.
We live in amazing times, which includes huge advancements in medical research and specialized equipment. And we are blessed to have many of the top breast cancer centers right here in our community. Mammograms may not catch everything, but they are still an important part of breast health. I urge you to get your yearly mammogram and do your monthly breast exams. Be your own advocate if something does not feel right, don’t wait to get it checked out.

The Featured Joint
One of our favorite joints was Fat Boys Bar and Grill, located out on Ga. Hwy. 16.
In reviewing it, we said “You will not leave hungry. You will leave happy and don’t be surprised if you say, “that was the best (fill in the blank) I’ve ever had.”
We said “was” because Fat Boys, famous for BBQ, hamburger steaks, country fried steak, fried shrimp and lots more, is no more.
Instead, some franchise bought it.
Now, we do not highlight restaurant chains in this column. But when it’s a couple of local twin brothers who are popping up joints all over the Coweta County area and cooking up some go-to bar food, we made an exception.
They are known for their wings, try the “scorchers” sometime. But it’s the “things” that keep us coming back. Welcome to H.J. Wings & Things. Brothers Keith and Kevin Taylor now have four restaurant locations, including Tyrone, Peachtree City and Senoia.
Their latest is the old Fat Boys spot. Probably the only thing that wasn’t changed was the outside walls, everything else was ripped out and redone. Literally a night and day transformation. And fortu nately, they kept one of the old cooks from Fat Boy days.
Great wings, excellent hamburgers and top of the line cheesesteaks - and you know how serious we are about our cheesesteaks.
But other “things” to consider are their shrimp, fish, massive sal ads, sandwiches, wraps, and … okay, wings again. All the locations are family-friendly, with a casual and fun atmosphere where you’ll feel comfortable at a booth or the bar.
Check out all the locations at: homeofthescorchers.com
The JOINTS
Everyone has their “go-to” place to eat. It might be with linen tablecloths and waiters in ties, or where you throw peanuts on the floor and carve your initials in the wooden tables. Whatever and wherever, it’s your “joint.”
There are lots of these places around here, and we’re out to find them all in The Joints column. And yes, all are White Monkey approved.

Thrilling Reads
One of the things I love about books is the variety of genres and categories to suit each reader’s taste. There truly is a book for everyone. Lately, I have been really enjoying the thriller genre.
Thrillers can be a tricky thing! You have to keep the reader interested in a fast-paced story plus throw in a twist or two. My favorite is when suddenly the last page of the book has an extra twist. It is so delightful. Some thrillers I can sit down and read in one sitting because they are so suspenseful I can’t put them down.
Here are some thrillers I have been enjoying lately!
Always the First to Die by R.J. Jacobs: This book has multiple timelines that go back and forth be tween the past and the present. The present is set during a hurricane in Florida which really adds a spooky and ominous backdrop. The part set in the past covers our protagonist as a young adult filming a horror movie. I listened to this as an audiobook and couldn’t turn it off. It kept me on the edge of my seat. It was really good and I loved the narrator.
The Couple at the Table by Sophie Hannah: This is a detective/murder mystery thriller. A group of people are eating dinner at a fabulous vacation house when one of them is murdered. It is told from multiple points of view and boy do these characters keep you guessing! This book was more of a slow burn that built up to a classic “everyone in the room for the reveal” conclusion which I loved! This book kept me on my toes.
You’re Invited by Amanda Jayatissa: This is a book about a woman who decides to attend her ex-boy friend’s wedding to her ex best friend with disastrous consequences. If you are someone who does not like your main characters to be unlikable then this book isn’t for you. I found Amaya to be so obnoxious and she made some really questionable choices. But this was a terrific book and I couldn’t put it down. It was so suspenseful. I did not guess the ending, which made me happy.
The Couple at Number 9 by Claire Douglas: This book was so creepy! But in a good way. It is about a couple who is renovating their isolated house and bones are found buried in the backyard. I spent most of this book on the edge of my seat. I did actually guess the twist in this one but it really didn’t take away from my enjoyment because it was so good!
Stay Awake by Megan Goldin: This book features a protagonist who wakes up and has no idea why she has woken up in a taxi or how she got here. She looks down and on her hands is written “stay awake.” What ensues is a multiple point of view, multiple timeline narrative. I was enthralled with this book. It was so excellent.
Those are only a few thrillers I have read recently. Other authors I rec ommend are Tana French, Alex Finlay, Darby Kane, Megan Miranda, Ruth Ware, and Mary Kubica. Head to the Carnegie Library today to pick up one of these fantastic authors!
Susan Crutchfield is the director of the Carnegie Library in Historic Downtown Newnan. She also is a professional photographer and enjoys volunteering with the Newnan ArtRez and the Newnan Theatre Company. ■

Bros (now playing) l Fix Rating 7/10
You’ve seen the rom-com over and over, right? Except, in the case of “Bros,” you haven’t.
“Bros” is a romantic comedy far different than any widely released, major studio movie. You see, the couple at the center of the love affair are two vibrant, attractive, and intelligent men. And they are surrounded by a colorful collection of LGBTQ+ supporting characters.
Ground-breaking as it is, I was surprised by how quickly the shocking sexual elements in “Bros” yielded to the sentimental love story at the movie’s heart. And while sexual content on screen can be provocative and arousing, producer Judd Apatow and director Nicholas Stoller (see 2008’s “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”) know that this material can also be scorchingly funny.
There are some hilariously explicit sequences in this film, but the thought-provoking, most memorable laughs are the subtle ones. Ever consider a “throuple?” Ever wonder how gay men talk about their sexual encounters? Some answers are provided within.
“Bros” is a movie that straight adults should embrace without reservation. And despite an almost exclusively LGBTQ+ cast, it plays broadly, casting a net over a wide demographic. Even Garth Brooks fans are respected.
Streaming Selects:
House of the Dragon (now streaming) l Fix Rating 6/10
–– HBO and Amazon delivered dueling fantasy shows in August and September. “House of the Dragon” is the prequel series to the megapopular “Game of Thrones” series that most other streamers aspire to replicate. Amazon bet big on “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” but HBO managed to position their dragon-powered project as the more adult-skewing option. And while explicit sex and violence are present in “House,” the storytelling isn’t as fully realized as in “Game of Thrones.” But the dragons are impressive.
flees to Bombay. But his proclivities continue, and he gets involved with a new set of criminals and ever-escalating wrongdoing. This period-set dramatic thriller is a bit of a slow burn, but Hunnam is charismatic, and the locations are exotic.
Hellraiser (October 7) – The puzzle box and Pinhead are back! Hulu reboots the scary “Hellraiser” franchise from Clive Barker that made its debut in 1987. The numerous sequels had diminishing returns, but this time around, director David Bruckner (“The Night House”) is at the helm.
The Journey
Ciao, Paper readers! After spending a little over a week in my new favorite place, Italy, I’m back! What a fun, inspirational and eye-opening trip it was. I learned so much about the history of Italy, its culture and art that was truly magical. When in Rome I saw something on a store window that I couldn’t get out of my head. Then, on our last day, I saw it again in Milan. It said, “Love people. Not labels.”
What a truly deep saying for a storefront.
In the professional world, we are taught that our personal brand is important. Perception is reality. We need to dress for the job we want, not the one we have.
All are correct, within reason.
If you have ever been the poor kid at school whose parents couldn’t afford, or simply would not, buy name brand clothes, you understand.
If you’ve gone through tough times in your life and had to sacrifice your own self-care, you understand. If you’ve been judged by others because of your appearance, whatever the reason – you understand.
If you’ve been disappointed by someone only to find out they were never who you thought they were, you understand.
The School for Good and Evil (October 19) – Charlize Theron leads an impressive cast in this adaptation of the book by Soman Chainani about an enchanted school that tries to keep the balance between, you guessed it, good and evil.
Wendell & Wild (October 28) - Director Henry Selick (see “Coraline” and “The Nightmare Before Christmas”) returns with this animated adventure about two demon brothers.
Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities (October 25, 2022)
– Horror master Guillermo del Toro hosts an anthology series of sinister stories. The list of directors of episodes includes the auteurs behind movies like “The Babadook,” “Splice,” and “Mandy.”
The White Lotus (Season 2, October 30) – After winning 10 Primetime Emmys with season one, “The White Lotus” returns with a new cast of vacationers. But don’t fear, fresh off her Emmy win, Jennifer Coolidge will appear once again as the ultra-rich Tanya McQuoid.
Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (now streaming) l Fix Rating 7/10 – Like “House of the Dragon,” “The Rings of Power” is the other big-budgeted fantasy epic series of the year. And while “Rings” is more family-friendly than “House,” both shows feature dark themes and violent battle sequences. In terms of scale and look, I give “Rings” the edge, but I suspect fantasy fans will be watching both of them regardless of the reviews.
My Best Friend’s Exorcism (now streaming) l Fix Rating 6/10 This 1980s-set horror film hits many right notes, especially with the music. The jukebox soundtrack flows freely through this derivative exorcism tale of best friends Abby (Elsie Fisher) and Gretchen (Amiah Miller). When Gretchen is possessed by a demon, Abby has to rid her of the evil. The story is familiar and trades on famous horror films of the past, but the cast is fresh and gets a big boost from a fun Christopher Lowell, who plays a body-builder turned wacky exorcism expert.
Catherine Called Birdy (October 7) – “Girls” director Lena Dunham adapts the book by Karen Cushman about a 14-year-old girl (Bella Ramsey) coping with various suitors in medieval England.
The Peripheral (October 21) – Chloë Grace Moretz stars in this slick-looking series about virtual reality. The story is based partially on a book by William Gibson (see “Neuromancer”). The show is codirected by Vincenzo Natali, who gave us 1997’s “Cube” and 2009’s “Splice.”
Theatrical Teasers:
Halloween Ends (October 14) – Director David Gordon Green’s continuation of the 1978 John Carpenter classic draws to a close with one more battle between Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Michael Myers (“The Shape” Nick Castle).
Arthouse Corner:
Tár (October 14) – Director Todd Field gives us his first film since 2006’s “Little Children.” The talented film auteur also writes the screenplay for “Tár,” which has Cate Blanchett playing Lydia Tár, one of the greatest living composers/conductors and the first female conductor of a significant German orchestra. The mysterious trailers for this moody drama look to utilize experimental filmmaking techniques. ■
When digging into the intentionality behind this statement, I learned that it was meant to “promote the diversity and uniqueness of each person, who we consider a valuable resource for the community”.
Why wouldn’t we want this? What ever made us say someone must style or cut their hair a certain way, wear high heels or drive a certain car to be idealistic? Why do we pressure ourselves to fit into a “box?” If that’s something you want to do, ok – but if not …
Steve Jobs wore jeans every day, Mark Zuckerberg wears t-shirts all the time. At the end of the day, it’s about projecting who YOU are.
To me, loving people and not labels means that we don’t give the suited person preference, respect, or attention over the person next to them. It means we learn who people are inside instead of judging them by their outward appearance. It means that if that first impression was a bit muddled, give them a second chance because we don’t know what is going on in people’s personal lives from day to day.
It also means love yourself for who you know YOU are. Don’t force yourself into a box that makes you miserable and always, always remember: you can’t hate yourself into the version of a person you love. Self-love comes from deep down and we have to remind ourselves of who we are and what we are capable of often … until it’s automatic. You deserve that.
“Nothing has transformed my life more than realizing that it’s a waste of time to evaluate my worthiness by weighing the reaction of the people in the stands.” – Brené Brown

Fall is almost here, and that means it’s time for the Coweta County Master Gardener Extension Volunteers (MGEVs) Fall Plant Sale on Saturday, October 15th , at the Coweta County Extension Office. The MGEVs are promising their best plant sale ever.
“We’ve planted a large selection of shrubs, perennials and trees says Kathy Olmsted, Fall Plant Sale chair. Our prices are very competitive, and our sale helps us support our mission to extend lifelong learning to Coweta County citizens through research-based education in agriculture, the environment, communities, youth, and families.”
Sale hours are 8:30 a.m. until noon on Saturday, October 15, behind the Coweta County Extension Office located at 275 Pine Road. All plants for sale have been propagated or grown by local MGEVs.
“Don’t forget to bring low-edged cardboard boxes to carry home your plants,” says Audrey Harrelson, Greenhouse Chair. “We’ll have some on hand, but plant sale veterans know they go quick, so bring boxes if you have them.”
Funds from the MGEV plant sale support Coweta County Extension’s community education programs, youth scholarships, 4-H programs and more.

Mr. Personality
Newnan’s Goodwill Ambassador
October, the month of Halloween, a holiday that is taken seriously on College Street and Temple Avenue.
My Book of the Month for September seems to have had a great impact on many of my readers. I have been receiving many positive comments about the book titled “Killing Jesus” written by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard.
That very book did indeed make a great impression on my life. I felt as I was an eyewitness from the very start to the very end.
I cannot think of Jesus without seeing him on the cross. That is the point, as we think of Jesus we need to see him on the cross. To do any less is to be disrespectful of Jesus and his very purpose for being on the cross.
The Christian faith is all about Jesus and Jesus is all about the cross. From the time Jesus was born He was walking toward the cross. When we come seeking Jesus we need to come to him on the cross.
Yes, see Him naked, bleeding and in pain and know the full price and cost Jesus paid hanging from the cross. This image places everything into proper perspective. It makes our purpose for seeking Jesus ever more meaningful.
Remember, if you truly believe in Jesus, you are a Christian and we should stop separating ourselves through certain denominations and fully embrace each other as Christians, we need to come together as one in Christ Jesus.
The impact of this book is greater than the words I have to express it. I suggest you experience it for yourself.
This brings me to this month’s book, another Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard masterpiece. I am recommending this book due to the details and facts it contains. The title is “Killing The Rising Sun,” about World War II and Japan. The authors do not sugarcoat the actions taken on either side of the war.
December 7 is Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. For those of us who have never experienced combat, this graphic story is indeed
an eye opener. Should you desire to have some idea of what our brave men and women in the armed forces experienced during that time, then this is the book to read. Warning: reading this book may cause post traumatic stress syndrome, which was known as combat fatigue at the time.
You are there as an eye witness to the hardships that our American heroes endured. Many paid the price for the very freedom we enjoy today.
Until next time, Peace, love and much respect, Mr. Personality ■

Real Estate Real Estate Market Update
The real estate market continues to shift from a seller’s market to a more neutral market. We are seeing homes listed take much longer to sell. There are more sellers reducing their list prices. The real estate market was so strong in the spring of 2022 that you were rarely seeing price reductions. Things have changed.
We are seeing an increase in properties listed for sale. At the time I am writing this, there are 398 residential listings for sale in Coweta County. We were typically dealing with only 140 listings for sale just a few months ago. At the same time, mortgage rates have increased dramatically. Mortgage rates nearly touched seven percent during the week of September 19,
2022. This is the highest rates have been in years. The mortgage rates increase curbed buyer enthusiasm as we are seeing less buyers with less buying power. So, all of this should decrease property prices, right? This is not the case at all right now.
Per the Georgia Multiple Listing Service (GAMLS), the average sales price in Coweta County in August 2021 was $383,732. In August of 2022 the average sales price jumped over 17% to $451,410. Despite an increase in supply (listings) and decrease in demand (less buyers), the price has increased. This is quite an unusual real estate market. This does show the value in Coweta County real estate right now.
So, what does the future hold? We are entering our seasonally “slow” time of the year in real estate. We sell less houses in the fall and winter than the spring and summer. I do expect prices to simmer down. Regarding mortgage rates, the Federal National Mortgage Association, known as Fannie Mae, and the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, known as Freddie Mac, both have predicted that mortgage rates will decrease closer to 4% in 2023. This should increase the number of buyers and strengthen their buying power (they can afford more). The real estate market is more volatile now than it has been in a very long time, but prices continue to stay strong here in Coweta County.

The HISTORY
The Ramble Comes to Newnan
By Jenny Enderlin, Newnan-Coweta Historical Society
The Georgia Preservation Trust (GPT) is returning to Newnan for the first time in nearly 15 years for its Fall Ramble. Twice a year, the preservation group chooses a different locale in Georgia for hundreds of historic architecture enthusiasts to tour structures ranging from dilapidated shacks to fully renovated mansions.
Local GPT member Robert Hancock has arranged dozens of locations in Coweta County to be available for viewing Oct. 14-15. On Sunday, Oct. 16, the fall Ramble will move to Chattahooch ee Hills and feature Cherry Hollow Farm, Muscadine Manor, the 16-acre John H. Beavers House, and a Q&A at the Farmhouse Restaurant with Serenbe founder Steve Nygren.
Throughout the weekend, tour goers will experience local architecture in an itinerary of their choosing. Available sites include the rural Swope Farmhouse built in 1836, the meticulously restored downtown antebellum Dent-Walls-Strain home, 38 College Street, whose impressive decor was conceived by Elton John’s interior designer, unpainted log cabins set deep in the woods, and former plantations with onsite cemeteries. In attendance at the Fitzgibbons farm will be the great-great grandson of Senator and Colonel Watkins who built the antebellum home; his descendent will bring original maps and letters belonging to his ancestor for display.
Friday’s tour begins at the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society’s McRitchie-Hollis Museum lo cated at 74 Jackson Street. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Ramblers will receive a tour of the 1937 house-turned-museum before setting off to visit homes located primarily in the downtown dis tricts. That evening, early ticket purchasers will converge at the Newnan Historic Train Depot to enjoy cocktails and dinner.
Newnan-Coweta Historical Society’s McRitichie-Hollis Museum
On Saturday, packets can be picked up at Central Baptist Church from 8-10 a.m. and Carl Miller Park from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Meal options are available and early ticket purchasers can opt to partake in the dinner held at the University of West Georgia Newnan Campus, which was formerly Newnan Hospital.
High level members also have the opportunity to attend a complimentary Heritage Reception at the Boyd Gallery, enjoying cocktails in the presence of original artwork by renowned painter David Boyd Jr. and his late father David Boyd Sr. who is known for his Jeff Foxworthy “redneck” art.
Tickets range from $130 to $290 as there are several different packages from which to choose. They can be purchased at www.georgiatrust.org
Jenny Enderlin is a local writer who received her degree in English from Florida State University. She is a Marine Corps spouse and a board member of the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society and the Newnan Cultural Arts Commission.
Did You Know?
• 61% of low-income families do not have a single piece of age-appropriate reading material in their home?
• 1/3rd of Georgia’s children start school unprepared to learn?
• 75% of Georgia’s students who are poor readers in the third grade will remain poor readers in high school?
How Do Books Help?
The more words a child hears, the larger the child’s vocabulary and the larger the child’s vocabulary, the more likely the child will be a proficient reader. However, in order to read with a child, books must be in the home.
