Parrot Heads, get those Hawaiian shirts ready, because A1A, the Official and Original Jimmy Buffett Tribute Show, is coming to Newnan!

On October 18, 2024, A1A will be at Line Creek Brewing The Reserve in Newnan to headline Coweta Fest, the annual fall fundraiser for the Coweta Community Foundation. Proceeds of the concert will benefit the Coweta Together Fund, which awards grants to local nonprofits. Last year, the fund gave $100,000 to 36 nonprofits and 17 Coweta County educators.

A1A was formed in 1991 when lead vocalist and guitarist Jeff Pike invited Scott Nickerson, founder of the first Jimmy Buffett Parrot Head Club, to join his already successful one-man tribute to Jimmy Buffett. In 1992, the band won a Jimmy Buffett Sound Alike Contest for Margaritaville Records, bringing them to the attention of Jimmy Buffett and his organization. Starting in 1992, A1A was the first band to perform at and repeatedly headline the annual Jimmy Buffett “Meeting of The Minds” Jimmy Buffett Parrot Head Convention and many other national landmark yearly Parrot Head Events. These performances laid the foundation for the fundamental building and growth of the National Jimmy Buffett fan base, Parrot Head Club community, and the Trop Rock and Coastal Americana Music genres as they are today.

The energy, musicianship, excitement, and continuous honest dedication to preserving Jimmy Buffet’s legacy that has always surrounded an A1A performance are an experience and a driving force that has helped the band remain the first, foremost, and longest-running Jimmy Buffett Tribute Show in history. For tickets, visit https://www.cowetafoundation.org/coweta-fest-2024/. For more information about Coweta Fest, please visit cowetafoundation.org or email ldavis@cowetafoundation.org

Notes from Perry Street

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

When I was in high school, my mom had a lumpectomy. It was scary for all of us and my first experience with breast cancer. I remember her discussing what she would do if she did have cancer. My mother was a Yankee filled with moxie and a passion for Jesus Christ.

She was a strong, caring and passionate woman. But she would not listen to anyone who had horror stories about breast cancer and their treatment. My friend and neighbor, Pat Lincoln, said that was a big issue she also faced. Fortunately, my mom’s biopsy was negative. She always advocated for her own health and the health of others. So, being my mother’s daughter, I followed her example by always getting regular mammograms and doing selfbreast exams, including checking your underarm and rib cage right under your breasts.

I remember my mammograms very clearly. The nurse had my breast nice and tight in an X-ray machine. Moments later, she says, “Mrs. Winters, don’t breathe, don’t move … NOW Breathe… DON’T BREATHE, DON’T MOVE!” The nurse reminds me I am in good hands and this is what she does. She re-adjusts me and again takes my breast in her hand as though she is casually picking up an orange at the grocery store. And once again, the nurse says, “Don’t breathe, Don’t move,” and so on.

There have been great advancements in women’s breast health. 3D imaging mammograms are the newest incredible technology. These machines require fewer images and provide greater clarity. But we have to do our part, too. I want to encourage all women to be their own advocates. Find doctors you trust and with whom you can communicate openly and honestly.

Last year at this same time, our friend Josie Exners wrote a powerful column for The Paper. She shared how she found a lump, which led to a double mastectomy, which saved her life. Be swift to contact your doctor if you feel any changes in your breast or anything in your body.

I want to honor some of our friends who have lost their fight with breast cancer.

Dona Eley and I were friends and counselors and attended church in Alaska together. Dona was diagnosed in 2014 and passed away from metastatic Breast Cancer in January 2024. She shared her journey in an incredible blog that has left an indelible mark on many lives.

Judy Wilson was one of my mother’s best friends throughout her life and her daughter JoQueta was my dear friend. Judy was diagnosed in 1991 with breast cancer and passed away in 2002 from metastatic breast cancer. Our neighbor Barbara Bates Lee lost her stepdaughter at just 41 to breast cancer. Her stepdaughter was afraid and knew something was not right, but by the time she sought medical help, it was too late. She left behind her husband and two young children. As Barbara said “You CAN survive… If you pay attention!

I also want to honor some of my dear friends who are breast cancer survivors.

Vonda Holbrook and I were high school friends, and I was her maid of honor, Vonda was diagnosed in 2006 at 40 years old when she found her own lump and she had a double mastectomy. Vonda went back to school to become a nurse. Vonda’s mom was diagnosed in 1992 and passed away from metastatic breast cancer in 2000.

Emily Chandler Westergreen, owner of Underground Runway, was just 37 when she discovered she had breast cancer; she too had a double mastectomy. Donna Owens just retired and closed Parlor 34 Hair, but she was 45 and then 60 when she had breast cancer. My neighbor Pat Lincoln was diagnosed 2011 and she found her own lump. All these women are still cancer-free and a fabulous inspiration to me and so many others.

These are just a few of my dear friends touched by breast cancer. I share their stories to give us all hope and encouragement.

This is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Be aware. You are not too busy - make the time. Do it for yourself and those you love.

Downhill Dream: Yamaha’s Soapbox Journey Captured in Award-Winning Film

One of the highlights of the year at Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Company, as far as community involvement goes, is that they have received added exposure thanks to an award-winning short film created to showcase their annual Yamaha Downhill Dreams Academy. The Yamaha Downhill Dreams Academy and Coweta Grand Prix took place the last two years in April in Newnan, brought together young contestants and Yamaha employees for an unforgettable experience. Leading up to the race, these young participants benefited greatly from the technical expertise and emotional support provided by Yamaha’s team. The program serves as an engaging way to involve at-risk students in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) activities, with the hope of inspiring them to consider future careers in these fields.

Bob Brown, Vice President of Manufacturing, shared his vision for the initiative: ”It’s important that we get kids interested and engaged in STEM topics at an early age so that we have more great team members able to join us in the future to help us continue to grow and produce these amazing products.”

In 2023, Bleu Lion Media captured the journey of the Downhill Dream, from Yamaha’s Academy to the thrilling soapbox races at the Coweta Grand Prix. Their completed 11-minute film was later submitted for consideration for numerous Telly Awards, which honor excellence in video and television across all platforms.

The film won a total of seven Telly Awards – five silver and two bronze – in categories that included editing, videography, cinematography, branding, and social responsibility. The project was also honored with a Webby Award, which focuses on projects produced for the Internet.

Emily Breault, founder and CEO of Bleu Lion Media as well as the film’s producer, came away with much more than just the satisfaction of winning a few awards.

“What I like about this story, and what we kind of pride ourselves on as a production company, is that we really take on projects that are stories people connect with and that move people,” she said. “We really like emotional storytelling. I think that the way we told this story really connected with a lot of people.”

When a professional in any field finds a home at a company whose standards for high-quality work and overall values align with his or her own, it’s a perfect match.

Belize Ellison, a senior sustainability engineer at Yamaha, has found such a match. Her role involves reducing Yamaha’s carbon footprint to enhance its business model.

“I want to help us be the best Yamaha we can today without compromising future Yamaha’s ability to continue to be the best,” she said. “That is my job.”

Ellison is thrilled to work for a company which values the same things she is personally passionate about when it comes to sustainability. As a relatively young engineer less than a decade into her career, she also appreciates being part of a brand recognized around the world for excellence – “the best of the best,” as she put it.

Breault stressed that this was not a typical corporate branding film. It showed behind-the-scenes examples of how Yamaha employees connected with the young people above and beyond just building cars with them.

Bleu Lion Media documents the excitement of the Downhill Dreams Academy at the Coweta Grand Prix, capturing moments that led to an 11-minute film which won multiple Telly Awards.

Yamaha’s Soapbox Journey

“We filmed each workshop and we saw the importance of community outreach for Yamaha, and what giving back means not just for the employees but also for the kids,” she said. “It was about giving them confidence and creating an opportunity to show them that they’re capable of so many things – careers that they might not have even thought of, giving them access to a whole new world.”

Breault noted that for the young people, getting to work with professionals in film production was an opportunity rarely received in their age group.

“Then there’s the sense of accomplishment,” she said. “I think what I love about what I do is that I see it all the time. We create videos, so we see it from start to finish, and the satisfaction of seeing a happy client

because of the product we created and the story that we told. It’s the same for these kids, seeing their car designs come to life and being able to create them themselves and actually racing down a hill and saying that they had such a blast. It was just really cool to see.”

Virtually every scene involving Yamaha personnel showed how they were affected by working with the young people.

“You could really see their passion and their connection to helping these kids,” said Breault. “Seeing how moved they were really moved me. I really enjoyed seeing them work with the kids and letting them get hands-on.”

Featured Artist … Sara Greer

Check out what Sara Greer’s been up to!

She’s already proven herself as a gifted singer/songwriter and it was only a matter of time before her skills in the studio would shine through.

A native of Newnan, Sara has been staying busy in the studio, working on recording music of all genres. She recently teamed up with up and coming singer-songwriter Jay Pruitt to record his hit single “Unalived,” which has garnered over 100,000 streams on Spotify alone since its release in February. Greer recorded, mixed and mastered the track from her home studio.

Since the massive success, Greer and Pruitt have begun to work on a new song titled “Alone.” The ‘80s and ‘00s pop-inspired track discusses themes surrounding leaving a long-time romantic partner, and the self-empowerment that can come with it if one allows it to. The track is scheduled to be released this fall. Pruitt is a senior at UWG and resides in Carrollton.

Greer has also recently begun collaborating with singer-songwriter U.S. Bunny of Palmetto. She will be engineering Bunny’s all original EP, “The Man,” which draws musical elements from Latin and indigenous genres.

Senoia native Ziggy O’hare sought out the opportunity to bring on Greer as part of their Magic Spade Media and Entertainment™, based out of Hampton. Greer & Ziggy both attended CEC where Pat Patten was their instructor. Greer says “that’s where I learned everything I know about recording, mixing and mastering.”

Greer is also preparing to do a complete rebrand of her own music, possibly under a new artist name. She continues to work on writing and recording an EP of her own. More details to be released soon.

HANK MARCY
THE CELLAR / THE

The Interview with Kristin Webb

Briefly describe yourself and what you do/did.

As CEO of the Coweta Community Foundation, I work to connect individuals and businesses with meaningful causes. My goal is to build partnerships that strengthen Coweta County; while helping local nonprofits access the resources and grants, they need to create lasting community impact.

Best piece of advice you’ve received.

Trust the process, even when you can’t see the outcome.

If I had it to do over …

I would have taken more time to celebrate the small wins along the way and taken a few more vacations.

You are going on an extended solo trip. What three albums and three books would you take?

Albums: Rumours by Fleetwood Mac, Traveller by Chris Stapleton, The Tortured Poets Department by Taylor Swift.

Books: Leaders Eat Last by Simon Sinek, The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, and The Bible.

Tell us one thing about yourself that few people know.

I have a genetic disorder called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, which means I’m literally more flexible than I should be—great for yoga, not so great for joints!

In addition, I’ve caught a striped marlin off the coast of Cabo, who happened to stab me in the leg.

You are hosting a dinner party for six. What five people, living or dead, would you invite and why.

Jimmy Buffett, Nelson Mandela, my late grandma Betty, Princess Diana and Melinda Gates – for their diverse perspectives and wisdom.

Your go-to food.

I love to support local restaurants. So, when going out to eat its typically Asian like Garlic or Tomo, while cooking at home its Italian (my son and I love to make homemade pasta).

Favorite movies(s)?

Fried Green Tomatoes, Pride & Prejudice or Top Gun series.

Dogs or cats?

Dogs! There’s nothing better than their unconditional love.

Your favorite quote and why.

“Be the change you wish to see in the world.” – Gandhi.

Name something that you are extremely glad you did or I’m incredibly proud of growing the foundation’s reach and impact

What advice would you give your younger self just starting out

Be patient with yourself. Success is a marathon, not a sprint. OCTOBER 18 -

Abby’s Closets at CEC

Very thankful to share Abby’s Closet is now part of the jewel of the Coweta School System, the CEC (Central Educational Center)!

While the Newnan High School 9th grade class was on site at the CEC during the reconstruction of NHS, we learned students who attend the CEC benefited from the onsite Abby’s Closet housed in Cougar Village. We are so grateful that the CEC requested their own space once NHS students returned to campus.

Thank you to everyone at the CEC for embracing all that Abby’s Closets are and to everyone who generously support Abby’s living legacy.

TheReal Es tate PAPER

It Is a Good Time To Buy

After much speculation all year, interest rates have finally decreased. The Federal Reserve met and released a statement on September 18th saying they reduced the federal funds rate by a half percentage point. Some analysts expected a quarter point decrease, so half a point was a nice surprise. Many experts think this is the first of many reductions, so we will need to keep any eye on that. Mortgage rates typically decrease when the federal funds rate is reduced.

Linda Walden, a local Newnan lender with Fairway Mortgage, spoke at our office this week. Linda said she is currently writing home loans at 5.75%. While that may not be the high two or three percent range of a few years ago, a 5.75% mortgage rate is excellent historically.

Not only are mortgage rates falling and expected to decrease more, but the local real estate market has significantly softened. The last few weeks are the slowest, as far as showings, buyer traffic, and offers, that I have seen all year. We are seeing more price reductions on listings, seller-paid closing costs (especially with new construction), and more open houses to try and generate traffic for sellers. While some of this is seasonal (the real estate market begins to slow down in the fall), the change is more significant than usual this year in my opinion. This is a good thing for a buyer. Listing inventory has increased dramatically as well. Buyers have more choices, as far as properties, than they have had in years. At the time that I am writing this article, there are 719 residential listings for sale in Coweta County per the Georgia Multiple Listing System (GAMLS). While still low historically, this is the highest amount I have seen in many years.

Pricing has decreased slightly also. The average sales price in Coweta County, $456,736, was down two percent from August of 2023 to August of 2024 per GAMLS. I expect the price decrease to be larger in September. All the market factors like mortgage rates, listing supply, and pricing are shaping up nicely for buyers. If you have been waiting to purchase, now is a good time to jump back in the real estate market.

The Film Fix … Streaming Edition

Capsule Reviews … New Rating System - A “Fix" is recommended with a rating between 6 and 10! a “No Fix” with ratings of 1 to 5 isn’t. http://dailyfilmfix.com/

Jonathan W. Hickman is an entertainment attorney, filmmaker, college professor, and novelist. More about Jonathan can be found by visiting http://filmproductionlaw.com/

Transformers One (now playing) – l Fix Rating 7/10 – By returning the transforming robots to their animated roots, fans get a family-friendly and emotionally gratifying outing in “Transformers One.” While just cutesy enough for the little ones and smart enough to pull in parents, this installment is more than meets the eye. In “Transformers One,” we meet two miner bots, Orion Pax (voice of Chris Hemsworth) and D-16 (voiced by Brian Tyree Henry), who live deep within the troubled planet known as Cybertron. These two pals spend their days dangerously mining for the super fuel Energon.

They long to be something more than just miners, but we learn that, unlike the leaders of their planet, Orion and D-16 were born without the ability to transform. When Orion signs them up for a race against more robust robots who can transform, they go on a journey of discovery that might change the face of their planet.

This pleasant film builds a credible origin story for Optimist Prime, Megatron, and others. And while it starts with juvenile jokiness, the narrative tightens emotionally with an impressive conclusion that might leave fans with a sizable lump in their collective throats.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (now playing) – l Fix Rating 7/10 – Director Tim Burton returns to the weird and wacky world of the freelance bio-exorcist known as Betelgeuse. And Burton brings back Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara. Fans flocked to this sequel to the 1988 hit film, as the movie has amassed sizable box office returns.

But while most will find it amusing, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is about as clever as its squared title, with a story that picks up some 35 years after the original. Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) now hosts a ghost-hunting television series. And as she introduces the latest episode, Lydia notices glimpses of Betelgeuse, aka Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), lurking within the live studio audience. Shaken, she abruptly ends the taping, much to the dismay of her smarmy producer and love interest, Rory (Justin Theroux).

When her mother, Delia (O’Hara), informs Lydia that a shark has eaten her father, she must return to the town of Winter River, Connecticut, to put his body to rest. Of course, ghosts follow Lydia wherever she goes, which irks her jaded daughter Astrid (“Wednesday” star Jenna Ortega). Could their family healing require a visit from that Beetle guy?

Ultimately, Burton and his team of writers aren’t confident that a reunion of the Deetz women with the Juice is enough, and they lard up their film with unpleasant and unnecessary subplots. Unlike the somewhat family-friendly original, we get a gruesome sequence involving a baby that may prove to be too much for younger viewers. But in that sequence, there was promise of a much darker and more engaging narrative than the one we’re given in this nostalgic bit of slapdashery.

Streaming Selects:

Woman of the Hour (October 18) – Actress Anna Kendrick (Oscar-nominated for “Up in the Air”) makes her directing debut with this story of a woman (played by Kendrick) who just happens to be matched with a serial killer on a TV dating show. The film is based on the true story of “The Dating Game” contestant Cheryl Bradshaw, who almost went on a date with Rodney Alcala. In the late 1970s, Alcala, a serial killer, was convicted of murdering five women; he was suspected in many other killings, as well. This movie was well-reviewed on the festival circuit.

Wolfs (now playing) – l Fix Rating 7/10 – The irresistible teaming of Brad Pitt and George Clooney makes this a must-see. And the fun concept should make it a franchise. In “Wolfs,” Pitt and Clooney play two lone wolves who take care of the aftermath of gruesome crimes and make all traces disappear. But in a humorous coincidence,

the two cleaners who only work alone must find a way to collaborate. “Wolfs” isn’t a classic, and I hope the next outing that’s already been greenlit by Apple goes deeper into their budding bromance. Just watching Pitt and Clooney have fun will only take viewers so far; round two will have to make us feel something more about this magical movie-star combination.

Salem’s Lot (October 3) — “Salem’s Lot” is one of my favorite Stephen King novels, but it’s struggled to get a great movie or series adaptation in the past. However, as King’s work gathers momentum on the big and small screen, fans can take heart that the translation might capture the emotional depth of the source material.

“Salem’s Lot” is about a writer named Ben Mears (Lewis Pullman) who returns to the town of Jerusalem’s Lot to discover that it is in the clutches of an ancient vampire. The cast is deep with “Game of Thrones” star Pilou Asbæk, Bill Camp, Alfre Woodard, and others. This “Lot” is written and directed by Gary Dauberman, who wrote the terrific “It” film and directed 2019’s “Annabelle Comes Home.”

Agatha All Along (new episodes every Wednesday) – l Fix Rating 7/10 – Kathryn Hahn plays the title witch in this spooky, maybe not scary, MCU adventure. “Agatha” is a spinoff of the Disney series “WandaVision” that premiered way back in 2021. As the title spellcaster, Hahn is terrific, and the surrounding cast is equally entertaining and infectious. Agatha’s familiar is a teen played by fresh-faced newcomer Joe Locke, and the two have a wholesome mother/son thing going while also hinting at the dark aspects of the witch’s personality.

Aubrey Plaza makes an excellent foil to Agatha, as the two sarcastic actresses complement one another while leaving room for contrast. Patti LuPone plays one of the makeshift coven members, rounded out by Sasheer Zamata, Debra Jo Rupp, and Ali Ahn. This all-women team is formidable, and the first two entries provide enough foundation to keep me coming back.

Theaterical Teasers:

l Joker: Folie á Deux (October 4) — Director Todd Phillips (see “Old School”) struck box office gold in 2019 with his unique and dour origin story of one of DC’s most memorable villains. The magic of that film was Joaquin Phoenix’s Oscar-winning turn as the hapless Arthur Fleck, who becomes the Joker. This time around, Phillips ups the stakes and the budget as the Joker goes on trial for his crimes committed in the first movie. And the Clown Prince of Crime might find true love as Lady Gaga plays the Joker’s devoted partner, Lee Quinzel. Word is that this dark, comedic comic book adaptation is also a musical.

l The Apprentice (October 11) — This 1970s and 1980s set movie about a young Donald Trump and his relationship with lawyer Roy Cohn almost wasn’t released. But the film is finally finding its way into theaters despite efforts to keep it hidden away. Sebastian Stan (MCU’s Winter Soldier) plays Trump, and Jeremy Strong (see “Succession”) is Cohn in this based on a true story drama from director Ali Abbasi (see “Border” and “The Last of Us” series).

l Saturday Night (October 11) — Buzz is strong for this one. “Saturday Night” tells the story of the first episode of Saturday Night Live that aired on October 11, 1975. All the SNL legends are portrayed with Dylan O’Brien looking uncannily like Dan Aykroyd and Cory Michael Smith making a good Chevy Chase in the trailers. The film is directed by Jason Reitman (see “Juno”), who should have a good feel for the uproarious material that depicts the chaos leading up to the premiere.

l Terrifier 3 (October 11) — Writer/director Damien Leone made quite a splash with the first two “Terrifier” films that were made on a meager budget but became massive hits. Part of his success was creating Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton), this generation’s Freddy Krueger. And with this third installment, Art plies his bloody killing craft on Christmas Eve.

l Venom: The Last Dance (October 25) — In this third and likely final “Venom” film, Tom Hardy winds down his stint as journalist Eddie Brock, inhabited by the alien Venom. The 2018 film didn’t impress me, but audiences embraced it, leading to the 2021 sequel that was much improved. Building on the second movie’s success, the trailers tease a bigger narrative, with Eddie and Venom on the run in different time periods. Expect Venom to bite off the heads of the bad guys and Eddie to be none too happy about it.

Coweta FORCE’s Annual Ride for Recovery Raises

Hundreds of motorcyle riders, volunteers and friends helped raise more than $20,000 for Coweta FORCE, one of the area’s largest addiction recovery organizations.

“Each year, we continue to surpass our goals, and we are beyond grateful for the love and support we receive from our amazing community,” the group said on their Facebook page.

A key founder of the annual ride was Wayne Stewart, who struggled with drugs for years and ended up in prison. He was ordered by the county’s Accountability Courts to come up with a community event that would help raise funds for worthwhile organizations.

From there, the annual Ride for Recovery was born, with proceeds going to Coweta FORCE.

“I am a person in recovery from substance abuse and it is imperative that I remain clean and sober,” Stewart said. “This is a way for me to give back and to help others in substance abuse.

Stewart is the operating partner of Precision Auto Tune 107-35, located near downtown Newnan. The local franchise has been the primary sponsor of the Ride the last three years.

He said he wanted to thank the local franchise for its continued support, as well as his wife Melissa. “I would not be here today without her.”

Check out the Coweta FORCE Facebook page for great photos from the event.

“We are honored to host this event and couldn’t do it without the support of our community partners and everyone who comes together to make a difference. Your continued dedication helps us move closer to recovery for all!,” said Coweta F.O.R.C.E. in a Facebook post.

The Featured Joint

Everyone has their “go-to” place to eat. It might be with linen tablecloths and waiters in ties, or where you throw peanuts on the floor and carve your initials in the wooden tables. Whatever and wherever, it’s your “joint.” This month’s featured joint is …

360 Taste

“Eclectic” is defined as “deriving ideas, style, or taste from a broad and diverse range of sources.” If you find a joint that serves sushi-grade tuna bowls, brisket hamburgers, and chicken quesadillas, let’s agree we have nailed “eclectic” down. Or as they like to say, “This is Where Bowls, Tacos, & Fries Come Together!!”

Teriyaki Tofu and Salmon Bowl Quesadillas and Fries with Garlic Aioli Sauce

Welcome to 360 Taste, located in the SummerGrove subdivision, where Chef Kyle Mayes holds sway. If the name 360 Taste rings a bell, that’s because you’ve probably seen their food truck (IG @360foodtruck) of the same name around town. They now split their time between the food truck and the restaurant. For foodies, Mayes studied under Chef Lance Jeffries Jr., who has served as executive chef at several area locations and is now running all things food-related at the Newnan Country Club. Back to 360 Taste. This is the type of restaurant where you go, “I can’t wait to come back and try …” And we will say it now. Their french fries - served with a garlic aioli sauce - may be the best in the county, heck, The South.

One secret we are happy to share is to check out their Instagram page @360.taste, where Chef posts each day’s special. Things like: naw, you gotta go check it out. 51 Market Square Road, Suite E, Newnan • Wed-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. • 678-857-3002

Fall is my favorite time of year! The weather is crisp, beautiful and things start getting cozy. It is also perfect reading weather My favorite fall activity is to sit in front of a bonfire with a delicious cup of tea or hot chocolate. These are some of my fall book recommendations.

Ready or Not by Cara Bastone

First, the cover of this book is so beautiful with the fall vibes. This is a romance book that also deals a lot with family issues. It is a moving story of a young woman who becomes unexpectedly pregnant and the found family who rallies around her.

Warm Hands of Ghosts by Katherine Arden

I would describe this book as historical fiction with magical realism. This book is set during World War I. We have so many World War II books, so I try to seek out books from the First War. I like how this switched back and forth between the brother and sister point of view. This was a grimy war-torn world with the magical/ ghostly elements fitting in well. This was a beautifully written book.

Funny Feelings by Tarah DeWitt

This is another book that has a terrific fall cover. This book is set in the world of standup comedy. It is about a comedian, Farley, and her manager, Meyer. This was a delightful book. I loved how Farley and Meyer’s story was set in the world of comedy. I think the author did a great job with not including too much of the comedy set but just enough information, so we see Farley is funny. Sometimes authors make the mistake of including too many comedy routines that are not funny. I loved the slow burn and the friendship.

Not the Witch You Wed by April Asher

You can’t talk about fall books without having a book about witches I LOVED this witchy and supernatural tale. I really appreciate a book where all the magic is out in the open because magical secrecy can feel like a tired plot line. Violet and Linc are a delightful couple, and I liked all the supporting characters in this book as well. Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

I would be remiss if I didn’t discuss my favorite classic book. I read this one every three to four years. I usually start it in the fall and read through the winter. I see something new every time I read this book. I still remember the first time I was introduced to this book. I was six or seven years old, and my grandma got me a big box of these condensed, illustrated, chunky books for kids. Pip has a very unhappy life as he struggles to find a higher place in the world. He is constantly fighting against his better nature. I love this book so much!

I hope you make it to the Carnegie this fall to check out some of these wonderful books. Also, make sure to visit our website to see all the wonderful programs and events we have this fall!

Screening Mammograms Key for Early Detection of Breast Cancer

One in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime, making breast cancer one of the most common types of cancer among women. In 2024, the American Cancer Society estimates that more than 310,720 cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the U.S., and more than 42,000 women will die from breast cancer.

Although U.S. deaths associated with breast cancer continue to decline, more can still be done to increase early detection and survival rates. Mammography is the best way to screen for breast cancer, checking for the disease before symptoms appear. A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast that can detect abnormalities in the breast tissue. Regular mammography screening has been shown to lower the risk of dying from breast cancer. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommends routine mammograms for women starting at age 40. Women are encouraged to speak with their primary care physician about their risk factors, as well as to determine the right time for them to start getting mammograms.

Mammogram technology has greatly improved, and the Piedmont Newnan Hospital imaging centers are is recognized by The American College of Radiology as a Breast Imaging Centers of Excellence. The Faye Hendrix-Ware Breast Health Center (BHC) and Piedmont Outpatient Center (POC) at Piedmont Newnan both offer the latest in breast imaging, including tomosynthesis 3-dimensional (3D) breast imaging and breast biopsy. Tomosynthesis 3-dimensional breast imaging produces a series of contiguous, thin slices of breast tissue allowing doctors to examine breast tissue one layer at a time. The centers also

offer breast ultrasound along with ultrasound guided biopsy and bone densitometry. Screening mammography exams remain the gold standard for breast examination.

For patients who do learn they have breast cancer and require treatment, Piedmont Newnan has a medical oncologist, Windy Dean-Colomb, M.D., breast surgeons, an on-site infusion center, and a nurse navigator

dedicated to helping breast cancer patients. Although no screening test is 100% effective, the combination of routine self-breast exams, an annual clinical breast exam, and mammography have been shown to be very effective means of screening for breast cancer.

Out & About

with Katie Anderson

Helping students to be successful in our community helps our community to be successful. While schools have great challenges in 2024, the good news is that Coweta has a local nonprofit to help provide extra support.

Their name is ELEVATE Coweta Students. Starting in 1993 as Communities in School, the mission has always been to empower students to stay in school and achieve success in life. In January 2020, the name changed to ELEVATE Coweta Students.

Executive Director Kevin Barbee sees different needs for each unique student, but for many students, the needs are mental/ emotional, as well as physical needs like food, clothing, hygiene products, and school supplies. ELEVATE has staff on campus at Ruth Hill Elementary, Welch Elementary, Smokey Road Middle School, East Coweta High School, and Newnan High School, which helps them identify and respond to needs immediately.

“Our [on-campus] rooms provide a safe, quiet, and welcoming environment to provide much needed services. Our rooms are a place that students can come to make up assignments, catch up on homework, or a place to decompress. We have many group programs as well. Our grade-level transition program works with 5th and 8th grade students to help them transition to middle and high school,” said Barbee.

Presently, they have seven site coordinators at five schools, and serve over 2,000 students. In 2017, they took over the school system’s mentoring program with 40 volunteers in 14 schools.

ELEVATE: Uplifting Coweta, One Student at a Time

Today, there are around 200 mentors in 28 schools. Full disclosure – I am one of them. Serving in this capacity has given me great joy and purpose. I always look forward to my weekly, 30-minute sessions with my fourth grade mentee.

Coweta schools always need mentors, especially male mentors, and the experience truly benefits all parties involved.

Ruth Hill Site Coordinator Cristal Malinofski and school counselor Laura Orozco-Perry work closely with mentors and their student mentees. “Mentors ensure that their mentees have someone in their corner supporting them as they navigate through life. In an environment where stability is not common, our mentors are providing consistency week after week, year after year,” Malinofski and Orozco-Perry said in a joint statement.

Jessika Allen, counselor at Atkinson Elementary School, also commented on her experience with ELEVATE mentors: “One of our new students that came from another school in the county had a mentor. She moved schools and didn’t know if she would ever have her mentor again. Through working together with the ELEVATE program, we were able to make sure we reconnected the mentees that moved with their previous mentor that they already had a connection with.

“When the student saw her mentor at her new school, she bolted to the door as soon as she saw her, let out the happiest squeal, and gave her mentor the biggest hug! The two were so excited to see each other after the summer break and after moving to a new school. This showed me how strong the connections are between mentors and mentees through this program.”

If you would like to volunteer with ELEVATE or donate to their mission, please visit their website at elevatecowetastudents. org. If you know of a student in need of help, please contact the organization via their website, or through a school counselor, teacher, or administrator.
