What is the role of the Fair Chairman? Coordinate all aspects of the Fair to include administration, amusements, exhibits, advertising and sponsorship. All of that is done through various committees whose members volunteer countless hours to ensure we have an entertaining, family-focused County Fair. Why does the Kiwanis sponsor the fair?

Circulation for June/July was over 79,000, which was the highest in three years. We saw increased sta tistical action in all ages and groups with our children taking the lead. This does not happen without par ents, siblings, grandparents, and others teaching little ones that reading is fun and worth it. While I am on the topic, sign-up for “1000 Books B4 Kindergarten” either online or in person and get your favorite young reader into the program. We have graduation ceremonies at least once a year and they are a blast! As we roll into the Fall, I am pleased to introduce a new digital service that has been requested nu merous times by library customers and now it is a reality. After Labor Day, Kanopy will be on our website and anyone with a Coweta County Library Card can sign in for free videos. Kanopy is an award-winning video streaming service providing access to more than 30,000 independent and documentary films. It also features an excellent children’s section called Kanopy Kids, which can be accessed for longer time periods than regular videos. More information will be available as we get nearer to the official launch, but I believe this is a service that many will want to visit frequently. While I am mentioning digital services, please check out Hoopla if you have not tried it yet. Hoopla is a web and mobile library media streaming platform for digital audio books, comic books, and eBooks. We have hosted Hoopla on our website for over a year, but I invite you to try it out if you have not or if you cannot find a title on our other book streaming service, OverDrive. Summer is over and the living was great! Coweta libraries experienced a post-pandemic resurgence and we thank all of you who attended a program, signed up for summer reading, or checked out items. Overall, more than 150 programs took place in June and July with over 3,200 children attending even with limits on attendees. Nearly half of all children (46%) who signed up for summer reading totally completed the program, which is a very high number not only here but statewide. Educators will tell you that the summer layoff creates a reading chasm which many young readers fall into and never fully surmount. The kids who completed the challenge and came close (many did) will stay on level ground if not higher by exercising their brains and reading good books.

The book was spellbinding and the footnotes added details and information not found in the Bible. The detail of each play in this life’s drama of a man called Jesus was indeed very real. This month we feature Jerry Moore - also known as J’Mo, who as a lifelong Coweta County resident and family man from the Welcome community, became a multi-talented musician, retiree from the Coweta County school system as a skilled craftsman, a mentor to the young and a source of inspiration to the more seasoned musicians.
Kris Youmans is originally from Savannah, GA where she was part of the River Street music scene early on and is greatly influenced by mu sic of the southern culture. Kris’ interests are focused on local music, organizing music fundraisers, her three grown children, life on Pierce Chapel & Hank the Dog (who also has an ear for music!) One of his friends, Clifford (Chunk) Dingler, was also a teacher to Jerry. As a master musician, Chunk was awarded a grant from the Georgia Council of the Arts Folklife Program, to share the craft of playing Western Swing Music, to make sure this art was kept true and original as it began in the 1920’s. Jerry was Chunk’s official apprentice. We talked with Jerry about his life, his love for music, and the influence of the characters and musicians along the way. He has a story to tell. Granted, different things make different people happy. Some take pride in ‘things,’ others ‘experiences,’ etc. Although I like my ‘things’ (annual way-too-expensive birthday purse is a great example of this), I’ve been an ‘experience’ person as long as I can remember. I like to travel, spend time with friends and family, cook for an exorbitant amount of people at the holidays and sometimes just crawl into a shell for some downtime. Looking for a new car, new clothes and other purchases are something I do out of necessity, not because I enjoy it. Now, there can be very negative repercussions to not liking material things … like not wanting to walk around the store with your spouse when they love that kind of thing. Or coming across as a ‘Type A’ personality in relationships because you just want to boil it down to the facts and make a quick choice. So, I’m not acting like my way of being is the best way, just explaining where I’m coming from. What is puzzling me is – do unhappy people realize they are unhappy? Do they keep themselves that way as a punishment to themselves or do they just think that’s the way life works? To me, happiness truly comes from deep down in a place that no destination or item can get to. It comes from doing things you enjoy (could be a puzzle even), feeling interested in their activities and connected to others and feeling like what you do matters. Now, if one of those areas of life is out of whack one can understand how that would bleed over to the others.
I’ve written a lot about mental illnesses including depression, and if that is the case, the solution is STILL under their control. That solution is counseling. Continuing to fight to get the right person that can help you make your life better and push past your barriers. But if this is not the case and you don’t like where you are – MOVE. Move on from that relationship, find some things you enjoy that are for you and not for someone else, engage in random acts of kindness, celebrate other people’s good news. Do SOMETHING to better your situation because whether you realize it or not, your ‘mood’ affects everyone around you – including and especially the ones you love. Trust me, I remind myself of this every single morning when I wake up and sometimes in and out of the day as things fly my way that can easily weigh me down. We must keep fighting every single day for the best life for ourselves and our loved ones. I hope you agree with me that in this Journey, that’s the only acceptable choice.

Regal Cinemas owner Cineworld, which has theaters in Ashley Park, is preparing to file for bankruptcy within the next few weeks, after the post-pandemic return to cinemas didn’t prove as profitable as expected. As reported by The Wall Street Journal, the London-based Cineworld is expected to file for bankruptcy in both the UK and US having amassed $4.8 billion in debt.
