Kiwanis Coweta County Fair: Special Needs Day Statement
For more than 20 years, the Newnan Kiwanis Club has offered a special needs day at the Coweta County Fair for youth in the Coweta County School System along with our Aktion Club through the Rutledge Center in Newnan. The Aktion Club is a Kiwanissupported program and is the only service club for adults with disabilities, with more than 10,000 members worldwide including the Rutledge Center.
In fact, homeschool special needs youth have also attended this event throughout the years. We rely on volunteers to provide this experience and in 2022, opened it to additional special needs groups like Adults in Action, which includes adults from other counties. We were overwhelmed with numbers. This resulted in longer wait times for rides, games and food. The experience was not what we strive to provide for our special needs children.
We are sorry, but in order to provide a safe and enjoyable experience this year, we made the incredibly difficult decision to limit attendance to special needs students in Coweta County and the Rutledge Center Aktion club that has participated for more than two decades. Requests to participate from parents of special needs students in Coweta County not in the school system have been honored in the past and will continue to be honored. Any such requests should be sent to kccfairchair@gmail.com.
The event is staffed completely by volunteers and is free of charge to all attendees. Many Kiwanians come out during their lunch hour to support this special event. We are accommodating as many special needs students as our resources and volunteers can support. As our community grows, we are working to streamline
operations and recruit more volunteers in hopes that we can accommodate larger groups with more special needs adults in the future.
The Kiwanis Club of Newnan is a volunteer organization that strives to support a myriad of needs in Coweta County. Members volunteer over 1200 hours throughout the 11 days of the fair as well as hundreds of additional hours in fair planning throughout the year. All proceeds from the fair are returned to the community in the form of monetary grants, scholarships, etc. In 2022 the fair returned $212,000 in scholarships or grants to more than 50 charitable organizations serving the citizens of Coweta County. The total dollars returned to the community over the past 20 years approaches $5 million.

Some background:
A year ago, nearly 45,000 people attended this annual entertainment get-together which set a new attendance record. The average daily attendance was just over 4,000.
The Coweta County Fair has a long and storied history with the very first fair taking place in 1874. After various interruptions through the years, the Newnan Kiwanis Club took over the County Fair in 1947 and has been the headlining sponsor ever since.
What It’s All About:
Proceeds from the Fair are distributed within the local community as grants to dozens of organizations who share Kiwanis’ dedication to serving the children of the world. Since 2000, Newnan Kiwanis has donated $4,600,000 to the charities of Coweta County from the Fair’s proceeds.
Anything Fried:
By the way, the top 10 craziest fair foods are; Funnel Cake; The Classic Corn Dog; Hot Toasted Waffle Ice Cream Sandwich; Deep Fried Cookie Dough; Beer Battered Cheese Curds; Fried Mac and Cheese; Fried Pickles; Frito Pie; Deep Fried Mashed Potatoes on a Stick; Turkey Legs.

The Featured Joint
Everyone has their “go-to” place to eat. It might be with linen tablecloths and waiters in ties, or where you throw peanuts on the floor and carve your initials in the wooden tables. Whatever and wherever, it’s your “joint.” This month’s featured joint is …
Tacos Mi Veracruz
There is something about 21 Bullsboro Drive that seems to bring out the best in authentic Mexican restaurants.
A favorite joint before it closed, Taco Criss served a very specialized menu with lots of items we had never tried before. We were not happy when it closed (there’s still one in Sharpsburg off Hwy. 34), but thankfully Tacos Mi Veracruz soon moved in.
You know a Latin American restaurant is going to be good when sometimes you are the only white people dining in. For a while there, parts of their menu were only in Spanish, but they added some translations and now even we can order like we know what we are doing.
The staff is super friendly and helpful. We ordered chicken enchiladas once with mole sauce. They brought it out and said if it was too sweet for us, they would take it back and get us something else. Well, it was sweeter than our usual fare, but it was delicious. And what incredible customer service.
The Burrito Loco ranks up there as one of our favorites. And the street taco supreme is so big we always order extra tortillas. There are so many new things to try other than the typical fare that we will be coming back often to try something new.

The Journey
with Samantha Brazie‘Hot’ topic lately - the weather. Weather usually is a point of discussion when it makes people uncomfortable. We’ve talked a lot about pushing ourselves outside of our comfort zone, but guess what this month’s column is about, Paper readers? Staying inside your comfort zone.
Since we’ve explored the ins and outs of how healthy and challenging it is to push ourselves to do more, this topic is long overdue. Everyone is entitled to their own parameters, or boundaries. In fact, those are healthy as well. The sweet spot there is balance. Using weather as an example: while I fully understand what an unpopular opinion this is - the colder the better. I love to sit outside with my heaters, cuddle up and watch a movie, dress in layers, have boot envy and warm up by a fire. Our house is crazy cold to get good sleep. Several of my closest friends loathe the cold. So you can see outside activities could potentially be quite the challenge. However, by opening up temporarily to sitting outside with my friend when it’s 90 degrees because she enjoys it, I learned to appreciate it too. With a couple fans installed outside of course. But on the other side of things, I don’t believe that every businesswoman needs to wear high heels. Nothing wrong with wearing them but if they make you uncomfortable, that will always show. Having confidence in who you are as a person and how you walk into a room is far more important than an expectation that in the grand scheme of things, means very little. I’m sure there are plenty of people that disagree with me and that’s ok. Just because someone else is attractive doesn’t mean you aren’t. Just because someone has a nice house doesn’t mean yours isn’t. Always remember that you are uniquely you. Nothing and no one is capable of distinguishing your light unless you let it.
“Beauty is about being comfortable in your own skin. It’s about knowing and accepting who you are.” -

Piedmont Newnan Bariatrics
Program Receives National Accreditation
Piedmont Newnan Hospital’s Bariatrics Program has been accredited as a Comprehensive Center by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP®), a joint Quality Program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).
“Patients seeking surgical treatment for obesity and its related conditions have a high-quality choice for receiving care at a nationally accredited program that meets the highest standards for patient safety and quality in Coweta County,” said Roger Eduardo, M.D., bariatric surgeon at Piedmont Newnan.
The MBSAQIP Standards, Optimal Resources for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, ensure that metabolic and bariatric patients receive multidisciplinary medical care, which improves patient outcomes and long-term success. MBSAQIP-Accredited centers offer preoperative and postoperative care designed specifically for patients with obesity.
“We’re very proud to receive this accreditation and offer high quality care close to home for our patients,” Dr. Eduardo said. “This national accreditation ensures that patients receive a multidisciplinary program, not just a surgical procedure, which improves patient outcomes and long-term success.”
To earn MBSAQIP Accreditation, Piedmont Newnan met essential criteria for staffing, training, facility infrastructure and patient care pathways, ensuring its ability to support patients with obesity. Piedmont Newnan also participates in a national data registry that yields semiannual reports on the quality of its surgical outcomes and identifying opportunities for quality improvement. The MBSAQIP Standards, Optimal Resources for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, are published by the ACS and the ASMBS.
“Piedmont Newnan’s commitment to quality care begins with expertly trained staff and the leadership of an experienced bariatric surgeon,” said Robert Miller, Chief Medical Officer at Piedmont Newnan. “The program is tasked with continuous review of surgical data as they continue improving the structure and outcomes expertise necessary to provide safe, efficacious, and high-quality care to all metabolic and bariatric patients.”
As part of the MBSAQIP Accreditation process, centers undergo an extensive site visit by an experienced bariatric surgeon who reviews the center’s structure, processes, and clinical outcomes data. Centers that earn accreditation are awarded a specific designation level, depending on how many patients it serves annually, critical
Piedmont Newnan Offers Support Groups for Oncology Patients and Their Caregivers
At Piedmont Newnan’s Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness Center, located next to the hospital in Piedmont Medical Plaza I (775 Poplar Road, Suite 340) oncology patients and their caregivers can participate in support groups each month, led by Shannon Wooten, LMSW, Oncology Social Worker at Piedmont Newnan.
care capabilities, the types of procedures provided, and whether it provides care to patients under the age of 18. Designated comprehensive centers are characterized as having all necessary equipment for complex initial and revisional bariatric surgery procedures on at high volume of patients. Designation as a comprehensive center through MBSAQIP accreditation requires all procedures to be entered in MBSAQIP data registry and an on-site visit every three years.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates about 93 million adults in the United States are affected by obesity and that number continues to increase. The disease of obesity increases the risks of morbidity and mortality because of the diseases and conditions that are commonly associated with it, such as type II diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, among other health risks. Metabolic and bariatric surgery has proven to be effective in the reduction of comorbid conditions related to obesity.* Working together, the ACS and the ASMBS have developed accreditation standards for metabolic and bariatric surgery to assist patients with obesity in identifying centers that provide optimal patient care.
“Our bariatrics team work very closely together to provide each one of our patients with the highest quality of care in our community,” Dr. Eduardo said. “We evaluate each patient on their specific needs and how we can best support their long-term goals and increase their quality of life.”
For patients interested in bariatric surgery, Piedmont offers free online bariatric seminars that provide information on the surgery options available. Additional Piedmont Newnan offers a Bariatrics Support group that meets monthly. For more information on the online seminar or support group, you may reach out to Angela Harrison, RN-BSN, Bariatric Surgery Program Coordinator, at Angela.Harrison@piedmont.org
For more information about the Piedmont’s bariatrics program, visit piedmont.org/ bariatrics
The Oncology Support Group meets the fourth Wednesday of each month from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and is open to patients who are newly diagnosed with cancer, in treatment, or have completed treatment.
There are many benefits to patients who attend a support group including an opportunity to meet people who have overcome a cancer diagnosis and treatment and the chance to discuss your feelings with people who can relate. It can also help those with anxiety or stress to feel better, and more hopeful, and not so alone.
The Caregivers Support Group meets on the third Wednesday of each month from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and is open to caregivers of people with chronic illness, including those battling cancer.
Caregiver Support Groups have many benefits for the caregiver as well. Many of those who attend form friendships within the group, which can reduce loneliness, isolation, anxiety and distress, and also help establish a network of caring friends who can relate. Caregivers also get advice from other caregivers regarding practical solutions, and can share their tips and improve or learn new healthy coping skills and gain a sense of empowerment and control.
Support groups are overall beneficial to those receiving care and those caring for loved ones as they help someone cope with their new normal and be more hopeful for the future.
For more information on our oncology and caregiver support groups, email Shannon.wooten@piedmont.org or call 770.400.4052.

It’s 1932, and 20 year-old orphaned tobacco heir Smith Reynolds has returned from New York to his family’s Winston-Salem estate with a surprise souvenir: a wife. The new Mrs. Reynolds is notorious Broadway star Libby Holman- a dozen years older than Smith. She arrives with a trunkload of gin and an acting coach who is quite possibly insane.

September is upon us and hopefully as you read this, the thermostat has begun its seasonal descent posthaste. We certainly had a hot summer at the Coweta Public Library System as we hit high marks for circulation, programming, and contest participation. CPLS staff checked out over 86,000 items to our citizens in just the months of June and July! I thank our staff and you, our customers, for making us a fun and vital part of you and your family’s lives. But we will not rest on laurels, we remain in high gear and invite you to check out the calendar at www.cowetapubliclibrary.org or just drop in to check us out. I do enjoy reading (obviously), but I also love recommending titles, so this month I would like to mention some titles along with a sentence or two about the highlighted books…
The Couple’s Trip by Ulf Kvensler- I loved this atmospheric hiking trip thriller based in Sweden so much that I talked my wife into reading it. She loved it too as you will… and you will never guess the excellent ending. Vivid imagery and tons of tension makes this vacation into quite the scenic nightmare.
The Spider by Lars Kepler- Here we are back in Sweden again with one of my favorite protagonists, Detective Joona Linn. Kepler is actually a husband-wife writing team who know how to ratchet the tension and explore the emotional twists needed for a taut thriller. Linn is after a killer again and this one is compiling quite a scary body count.
The Wager by David Grann- One reviewer calls this book a tour-de-force of narrative nonfiction and I agree. This atmospheric tale of shipwreck and survival will have you almost feeling the cold salty winds that challenged and tormented these sailors at every turn. This will be a movie, no doubt.
The Bathysphere Book by Brad Fox- The first ever voyage to the bottom of the sea was even more than history, research, and seeing the secrets of the ocean’s depths for the first time. In this neat book,
poetry and romance also play roles. A fun and interesting read about the waters that make up more than 70% of the surface of our planet.
Bad Summer People by Emma Rosenbaum- An exclusive summer haven is filled with infidelity, backstabbing, and even murder. This is a wicked fun and whip-smart debut! And it’s okay to read this summer hottie out of season…
Hang the Moon by Jeanette Walls- I really liked this story and the heroine. Following her triumphs and defeats, as she grows into herself all the while, is a treat and Walls’s beautiful writing only lifts this title higher in my esteem. You will fall in love with young Sally Kincaid on the first page, trust me.
Essex Dogs by Dan Jones- This historical novel set during the 100 Years War won me over quickly and now I await the upcoming books of what will be a trilogy. The Dogs, an unruly platoon of roughneck soldiers, battle for country, plunder, and the plain fun of it! The characters are as funny as they are tough.
Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus- This one is so good on so many levels, it is no doubt that it is being mentioned for national awards. The title may throw some folks off, but this is laugh-out-loud and shrewdly observant novel that has many things to say about the status quo.
Happy Reading and come check us out at the library or at www.cowetapubliclibrary.org!

The Film Fix … Streaming Edition
with Jonathan W. HickmanCapsule Reviews … New Rating System - A “Fix" is recommended with a rating between 6 and 10! a “No Fix” with ratings of 1 to 5 isn’t. http://dailyfilmfix.com/
Jonathan W. Hickman is an entertainment attorney, filmmaker, college professor, and novelist. More about Jonathan can be found by visiting http://filmproductionlaw.com/
In Theaters:
Gran Turismo (in theaters now) – l Fix Rating 7/10 — It’s not a video game; it’s a racing simulator. Whatever you call it, the movie “Gran Turismo” is inspired by the PlayStation hit and the true story of driver Jann Mardenborough.
In the film, we meet Jann (played by Archie Madekwe), a retail worker who spends every opportunity playing the PlayStation game Gran Turismo. One day, Jann is invited to compete in a competition, the winner of which will earn a spot in Nissan’s GT Academy. Eventually, he makes it to the actual raceway in this you-could’tmake-that-up racing drama.
Director Neil Blomkamp (Oscar-nominated for 2010’s “District 9”) seamlessly melds his talent for special visual effects with the inspiring underdog tale to produce a surprisingly impactful viewing experience. “Gran Turismo” is the video game adaptation we never saw coming.
The Hill – l NO Fix Rating 5/10 — Screenwriter Angelo Pizzo (see “Rudy” and “Hoosiers”) shares writing duties on this sturdy but square account of baseball player Rickey Hill. The story follows Hill (Colin Ford) as he chases his dream to play in the big leagues. Despite having a degenerative spine disorder and requiring braces on his legs as a child, Hill preserves and develops his instinctive hitting talents.
Dennis Quaid plays Hill’s protective Baptist preacher father, who does not support the decision to play when it may cripple his son. This handsome picture was shot in Georgia and does carry an undeniably inspiring message. Early sequences capture the feel of the time and Hill’s hard-scrabble upbringing. But the movie’s antiquated structure and insistence on relying on clumsy exposition when it should show us how Hill overcame the odds proves to be its undoing.
Quaid is solid in the dad role, and familiar faces (like a nice appearance late in the narrative by Scott Glenn) help to maintain interest. Braves ace John Smoltz has a fun extended cameo in the film’s conclusion, but his character’s connection is undercut somewhat because the scenes were shot outside the presence of the rest of the cast. The shame here is that Pizzo, the man who penned perhaps the greatest sports film ever made, can’t figure out how to punch up the overly ham-fisted material in a way that recaptures a little of that “Hoosiers” magic.
Streaming Selects:
Star Trek: Lower Decks (season 4 series premiere on September 7) — Star Trek fans have fully embraced this animated comedy that takes place on the U.S.S. Cerritos and focuses on the support crew. The irreverent hilarity continues with season 4. Expect plenty of franchise in-jokes in this popular cartoon science fiction adventure.
El Conde (September 15) – This unusual-looking film comes from gifted Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín (see 2016’s emotionally gut-wrenching “Jackie” and the visual treat “Ema” in 2019). “El Conde” is a horror fantasy built around the idea that brutal Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet was a vampire. The wild-looking movie is presented in stark black and white with fantastical elements and gruesome bits of gore. This arthouse entry will not be for everyone.
2018. The third outing has McCall trying to live quietly in Southern Italy. Of course, he runs afoul of the local mafia, and they are not safe from his particular set of skills. The clock is ticking as McCall calls all the shots. Count me in for this guilty pleasure.
The Nun II (September 8) – The 2018 spin-off from “The Conjuring” universe had creepy moments. I didn’t care for the rushed conclusion, but getting there was unnerving. Taissa Farmiga returns to the lead, but even though she’s a nun in the movie, she’s not exactly the title character. Farmiga plays Sister Irene, who is called into action in 1956 France when a priest is murdered. Her persistence will bring her face-to-face with the fearsome demon nun Valak.
A Million Miles Away (September 15) – Michael Peña (see “AntMan”) plays Jose Hernandez, a migrant farmworker who became an astronaut. The inspiring true story should resonate with anyone with a dream, and the trailers tease a handsome production anchored by Peña, who, let’s face it, is one of the best things about any movie he’s in.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 (September 8) – 2002’s “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” remains the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time. It also launched the career of writer and star Nia Vardalos, who received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. The success led to a short-running television series and a lackluster sequel in 2016. This time, Vardalos serves as both writer and director as the family visits the old country for a reunion.
The Little Mermaid (September 6) – l Fix Rating 7/10 –After a successful theatrical run in May, the live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid” comes to the Disney streaming platform. The classic story gets a modern face-lift with fresh, diverse casting and some initially stunning effects marred by a murky action sequence that brings the film to a befuddling conclusion. Youngsters will embrace it, and adults who grew up with the original will get nostalgic feels.
Theatrical Teasers:
The Equalizer 3 (September 1) – Denzel Washington steps back into the role of Robert McCall, the one-man killing machine who becomes an avenging angel for the downtrodden. This adaptation of the 1980s television series launched in 2014 and got a sequel in
Outlaw Johnny Black (September 15) – Michael Jai White stars and directs this slapstick comedy spoof about a gunfighter out for revenge in the Old West. The eclectic cast looks fun, with Barry Bostwick (see “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”) playing the villain. White (see him in 1997’s “Spawn”) has worked continuously since the 1990s. He’s an actor who is long overdue for some recognition. Here’s hoping that his star will continue to rise with high-concept projects like this one.
Expend4bles (September 22) – The “Expendables” franchise is bound to make the list when discussing high-concept exploitation pictures. Even though minimal attempt is made to ground these over-the-top action films in any sense of reality, they have found an audience.
The trailers for the 4th installment contain the quotes of fans who asked for an R-rated picture after the last one settled for PG-13. The online red band preview gives fans what they asked for with plenty of bloody kills, f--- bombs, and promised gratuitous sex. Sylvester Stallone once again plays Barney Ross, who assembles his team of skilled mercenaries to topple the army of a ruthless arms dealer.
The Righteous Gemstones (all seasons now streaming) – This zany series about a filthy-rich televangelist family is something of an acquired taste. John Goodman plays Eli Gemstone, the aging founder of a massive ministry that’s threatened from within; his spoiled kids might bring down his empire. As Eli battles his own personal demons, he’s forced to relinquish the reins of power to his three children (played by Danny McBride, Adam Devine, and Edi Patterson). In season 3, Eli and his offspring face off against a doomsday prepper militia run by the ex-con husband of Eli’s deeply religious sister.
The Hunt for the Lost Treasure of Coweta set for Sept. 1-30
From Special Reports
The “Hunt for the Lost Treasure of Coweta” gives everyone the chance to find real gold. This new event, sponsored by the Moreland Cultural Arts Alliance (MCAA), invites treasure hunters of all ages to join this scavenger hunt and to discover the remnants and relics of the past hidden in ‘plain sight ’ throughout Coweta County. While hunters will find cultural riches throughout the search, one treasure hunter will win the Grand Prize at the end of the Hunt which is one Troy Ounce of gold. The value of gold varies; a troy ounce of gold at publication time is valued at $1,924. Other hunters will be awarded additional prizes as well from a treasure chest at the end of the Hunt. The Hunt begins on Friday, September 1 and continues throughout the month.
Treasure hunters will find new clues on MCAA's website: morelandadventure.com and on its Facebook page: Moreland Cultural Arts Alliance. New clues will be released on Fridays, September 1, 8, 15, and 22. The winners will be announced on Saturday, September 30 at a finale event at the Hometown Heritage Museum: A Tribute to Lewis Grizzard (7 Main Street, Moreland) beginning at 11 a.m. Finale festivities include free admission, a chance to see new exhibits at the Moreland museums, light refreshment, and music. The

Locally grown beef products including steaks, roasts, sausage and more.

names of all winners will be announced beginning at noon. Winners need not be present to win.
Treasure hunters will search throughout Coweta County for historic architecture, unique structures archeaological sites, nostalgic and quirky places and items, many of which are found in plain sight everyday and we pass often by and miss. Hunters can search individually and in groups. The Hunt is open for all ages.
The Hunt for the Lost Treasure of Coweta is inspired by the work of members of the former Moreland Community Historical Society members, Edward and Helen Wolak who created a guide to the ”Vanished Communities of Coweta County” documenting the early settlements in the area which ultimately became the cities in the county. The guide contains historic maps and loads of interesting details about lost places in Coweta.
Treasure hunters may find this booklet helpful; free copies are available at the Hometown Heritage Museum, Thursday – Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. or by appointment and at locations listed on the MCAA website (morelandadventure.com).
Treasure hunters may use books and resources found online, in county libraries, historical societies and they may quiz local history buffs for help deciphering the clues.
Be sure to download the rules and guidelines on the MCAA website: morelandadventure.com/events

The Interview with Jeff Coggin
Briefly describe yourself and what you do/did.
I am a travel advisor and a wine sommelier. My wife Cindy and I own Coggin Travels and we specialize in pairing travel with wine. We send wine loving clients on vacations to the best wine regions throughout the world. Our clients have the most fun learning about and experiencing wine in the places where great wines are made.
Best piece of advice you’ve received.
From a personal standpoint, Jesus said “he who finishes last will be first.” I think it’s important to be humble, kind, and empathetic to the challenges of others, putting others needs ahead of your own.
From a business perspective, when we were forming our travel business, we struggled to find a niche of customers to target. Our business coach, Harlan Hammack, helped us to identify our niche of wine loving clients. To quote – “if you stand on the street corner and say that you will talk to anyone about anything, then nobody will talk to you. However, if you stand on the street corner and say that you want to talk about travel and wine, then those people interested in travel and wine will stop and talk to you.”
I also find myself often referring to some business advice that I received early in my career relative to negotiating. The party with the least to lose is always in control of any negotiation.
If I had it to do over …
I’ve been married to Cindy for 28 years, but we didn’t find each other until our early 30s. If I could do it over again, I would find her much sooner.
You are going on an extended solo trip. What three albums and three books would you take?
I am a voracious consumer of news, so I must have my Wall Street Journal subscription. I also enjoy reading the Washington Post. This provides a completely different perspective, and I like to be both informed and enlightened. For music, I’m a fan of the 1970s, both disco as well as the harder genres such as Led Zeppelin.
Tell us one thing about yourself that few people know.
When I was young, during the CB radio days, I had an afro and my CB radio handle was “Hair Bear.”
You are hosting a dinner party for six. What five people, living or dead, would you invite and why.
We have a wonderful round table in our dining room which seats 8, so I am taking some liberties to invite 7 people:
Babe Ruth – for larger than life fun
Ronald Reagan – for wisdom and inspiration
Charlton Heston – to hear about his life in Hollywood
Dean Martin – to hear about the crazy experiences of the Rat Pack
Rodney Dangerfield – for laughs
Mike Grgich – the winemaker who made the USA wine which won the Judgment of Paris in 1973. He is from Croatia and has a winery there. I’d love to hear his story.
Anthony Bourdain – to convince him to stay in this world with us.
Name an as yet unfulfilled dream.
It revolves around travel. What is often referred to as a “Bucket List,” we now call a “Life List.” On my life list are the wine regions of Australia and New Zealand, South Africa, and South America. I haven’t yet been to Antarctica or any of the Nordic countries or Iceland. I hope to one day host a river cruise on the Dnipro River in Ukraine. It was once a popular destination. I’m confident that people will travel again to Ukraine in my lifetime.
If you weren’t doing what you are, you would be …
I guess I would still be in Corporate America in some kind of sales leadership position, but I would not be having near as much fun as I am now. I can say from experience that there is no substitute for the thrill of having your own successful business.
Your go-to food.
Mediterranean. Pizza and pasta but I love seafood.
Favorite movies(s).
The Mel Brooks movies from the 1970s are my favorites. Plus, almost anything with Gene Wilder, Charlton Heston, or Rodney Dangerfield.
Dogs or cats?
Dogs – We have property in Northwest Coweta, near Chattahoochee Bend State Park, and we host quail hunts benefitting local charities. We have a German Shorthaired Pointer and a Field Bred English Cocker Spaniel. They are champion hunters and the best companions. I am proud of both.
Your favorite quote and why.
Pigs get fat and hogs get slaughtered. Don’t be a hog.
Name something that you are extremely glad you did or accomplished.
I retired from Enterprise Holdings in 2019 after a 35 year career in the car rental business. Fortune smiled on me throughout my career, and I accomplished a lot with a great team of people. I hit a ceiling and I made the 100% correct decision to leave corporate America on my own terms to start our travel business with my wife Cindy.
What advice would you give your younger self just starting out on their own.
I should have been more confident when I was young. Some might find that hard to believe but I doubted myself all along the way. Plus, find Cindy earlier.

OUT and Painting the Town
“The public has a right to art. Art is for everybody.” – Artist Keith Haring Downtown Newnan’s murals are the gifts that keep on giving. From enhancing the aesthetics, to showing our history, to reflecting our community identity, our murals are more than just gorgeous backdrops for an Instagram-worthy selfie (although that’s fun, too!) Cowetans are fortunate to have many municipal masterpieces to appreciate. Have you seen them all?
Places and Faces: South Court Square, Vinylyte Record Shop
ABOUT
Corey Barksdale was the Newnan Coweta Artist in Residence in October 2016, when he created the musicians’ mural. He has a B.F.A. from Atlanta College of Art, and his work can also be found on the Atlanta Beltline, in Decatur, and in the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.
Barksdale finds inspiration in African-American artistic heritage. He uses bold colors, influenced by the vibrant color combinations in African art.
On public art, Barksdale says, “Because community public art often echoes the experiences of the surrounding people and culture, murals often encourage a stronger sense of community and solidarity.”
The Bubble Girl: West Broad Street, Atlanta Trek Newnan
In October 1998, Ans Steenmeijer was hired by the city of Newnan to paint the Places and Faces mural. Some of the pictures include Governors Arnall and Atkinson, Lewis Grizzard, Dunaway Gardens, Male Academy, and other historical images.
Steenmeijer went to art school in Amsterdam and her father was a muralist. She was a fashion artist for many years. She switched to murals when she started to have vision problems, and ended up loving it. The Places and Faces mural took her five days, eight hours a day, to finish. (There is a wonderful video of her painting the mural on YouTube.)
Flowers: West Court Street, The Alamo
Amber Stidham painted the mural of the “Bubble Girl,” who she named Lily, in October 2018. When she heard that the building’s owner was looking for a mural, the guidelines were to reflect happiness and Newnan scenery.
Stidham wanted “to capture a childlike wonder and the way it felt to be young when anything was possible.” She has painted additional murals around town: at Junction Lanes, the swing mural at Ashley Park, as well as others in Peachtree City and Fayetteville.
After twenty years of graphic design, she decided to work as an artist full time. She loves the connection the murals allow between artist and viewers. “Connecting with someone you will never meet through art is healing to me,” Stidham said.
Alan Jackson: North Court Square, Redneck Gourmet
Molly Rose Freeman was the Newnan Coweta Artist in Residence in July 2016 who painted the flower mural. The design – a collaboration between Freeman, UWG representatives, members of the ArtRez board, and business owners – was chosen to mimic the shapes of the surrounding buildings. Freeman’s designs are inspired by the “vitality of nature.” She has painted over 50 murals, which can be found all over, from Mexico to San Francisco to the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport.
Musicians: Perry and Spring Street
Tim Davis, the Newnan Coweta Artist in Rez in October 2018, painted the mural of country music star and Newnan native Alan Jackson. Davis was Jackson’s choice of artist, based on his work on Nashville’s Legends Corner mural, depicting thirteen legendary country music artists (of which Jackson is one.)
Davis has painted over 350 murals in various cities. He is one of seven siblings, who all became artists. His main philosophy is, “it has to look real.” His thorough research and attention to detail help bring his subjects to life.
