We've lost one of our own "It is with great sadness that the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office shares the news that Deputy Sheriff Eric Minix died in the line of duty in the early hours of Thursday, January 4, 2024.

From PNH Press Release Lily Abigail, 7 lbs., 3 oz., and 20 inches long, was the first baby of the year born at Piedmont Newnan Hospital.

Proud parents, Cara and Blake Harmon, and big sister Layla (7), welcomed a healthy baby girl at 9:39 p.m. on January 1. This is the couple’s second child, and both girls were delivered at Piedmont Newnan.

Following the pursuit of a stolen vehicle which crossed into Alabama, and during the apprehension of the suspect, Eric was struck by a police car and was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

DS Eric Minix was a dedicated Deputy and K9 Officer, but more importantly, he was a friend to everyone who knew him.

Eric leaves behind a loving wife and three daughters.

Citizen of the Year Nominees Announced

The Citizen of the Year award ceremony will be held January 25, 2024, at 6:30 p.m. at the Newnan Centre, located at 1515 Lower Fayetteville Road, Newnan. The prestigious event is sponsored by the Kiwanis Clubs of Coweta County.

I awoke on the last day of 2023 around 1 p.m.

I know this because it was much brighter than usual and squinting at my watch showed it to be 12:57 p.m exactly. So, close enough. I have never slept in that much since … forever.

At least I was in my own bed, where I had spent pretty much every day since Dec. 28. That included Dec. 29, which was my birthday for those wanting to send belated cash and well-wishes, or at least make a note for next year.

I had, for lack of a better term, that “thing” you would not wish on your worst enemy, as the saying goes.

Flu, respiratory whatever, who knows but I had it.

Back to those in Washington, D.C. I am beyond tired of any politician saying they are speaking for the American people, or what the American people want is (fill in the blank). I am tired of Democrats and Republicans blaming the other side for, well, everything.

There is a hatred that I find demoralizing, shameful and of no use to running this great country. Grow up and work things out regardless of what political label you wear.

Enough on politics.

The Weekly is our new publication, which replaces The Shopper. From 1989, the Shopper successfully served the area. The Weekly will not only continue that tradition but expand its focus on consumer-related articles for our readers and our commitment to help promote local businesses and nonprofits.

I hope we learn to say “no” when, well, we really don’t want to do something, we have no intentions of doing whatever is at issue, and we won’t show up anyway.

There is nothing wrong with saying you don’t want to do something. You are not required to give a reason. I wasted too much time in 2023 because people just wouldn’t say “not interested, no thanks, not at this time …”

The concept of setting up a meeting with someone - for whatever reason - and then they just don’t show up is a concept I just don’t understand. And then being ghosted when you follow up to make sure they are okay takes the prize of, well, just being rude.

I just don’t get it.

I do know, however, my 2024 goal is to be more intentional. That my “yes” is a “yes,” and my “no,” is simply that. Tied to that, I want to stop worrying about all the “small stuff.” Baring a life-threatening experience, a lot of what we face in this country is small stuff compared to what is going on in the Middle East or the Ukraine.

I want to prioritize and focus on separating “urgent,” “immediate,” or “someday,” and/or is this a simple “no?”

Growing up, my three brothers and I would always ask our dad what he wanted for Christmas or his birthday. His answer was always the same …

“Peace … just peace.”

Protect Against Respiratory Viruses, Other Illnesses this New Year During winter months, respiratory viruses pose a serious threat to our health, putting us at risk for illnesses including flu, COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and the common cold. In addition, strep throat, which is caused by a bacterial infection, affects many children.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the state of Georgia has very high overall respiratory activity based on healthcare visits for fever, cough or sore throat.

In Coweta County, cases of flu and COVID-19 are increasing, while cases of RSV are decreasing, based on visits to emergency departments, the CDC reported in early January.

To stay healthy in the new year, it’s important for people of all ages to take precautions to avoid illness.

Follow the CDC’s recommendations to protect yourself against respiratory viruses: • Stay up-to-date with vaccines: – Individuals six months and older should get an annual flu vaccine and a current

COVID-19 vaccine.

– To protect infants from getting very ill from RSV, all infants should receive either an RSV vaccine given during pregnancy or an RSV immunization given to infants and some older babies.

– Adults 60 and older can also receive one dose of RSV vaccine and should consult with their healthcare provider about whether they should receive it.

• Get tested and seek treatment when you are

sick. If you become ill, healthcare professionals can prescribe antiviral drugs to treat influenza (Tamiflu) and COVID-19 (Paxlovid). These treatments must be started as soon as possible – within 48 hours of flu symptom onset and five to seven days of developing COVID-19 symptoms.

• Wash your hands thoroughly. If soap and water aren’t available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

• Cover your nose and mouth when you cough and sneeze. Influenza viruses, for instance, spread mainly by droplets when people infected with the flu cough, sneeze or talk.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

Germs are spread when a person touches something that is contaminated and then touches their eyes, nose or mouth.

• Stay at home when you’re sick and avoid other people when they’re sick.

• Wear masks to reduce the pathogens you breathe in and to protect others if you’re sick. Masks have varied effectiveness against different viruses.

A cozy new recipe for wintertime baking January is the month for contemplation. If December is for looking back at the old year, January’s job is to look ahead into the new one. The British writer and futurist Joanna Penn has said, “One of the best ways to predict the future is to create it.” I find this to be such sensible advice. While we certainly can’t know everything a new year will bring—we’re not God, after all—we can sure pray and plan and work hard so that some things we desire do indeed happen.

This month, I am thinking about the places I want to go, the new habits I want to create, and of course the words I want to write. I’ve had a couple of new cookbook ideas simmering for the past few years, and 2024 is the year one of them (at least) needs to come to fruition.

For most of January, you’ll find me holed up in my office with my planner, happily jotting down ideas and goals, and because of this period of reflection and how much time we spend indoors, I always think of January as the coziest month.

And if there is a smell cozier than that of bread baking in a hot oven on a cold morning, I can’t think of it, so January is the perfect time to try a new quick bread recipe. I enjoy baking but got my fill of sweets over the holidays. Cookies, cakes, and candies just don’t appeal to me right now. In fact, when some family members visited right after Christmas and we decided to get takeout for lunch, most of us requested salads!

Still, those who like to play in the kitchen are going to bake something this month, and I have the perfect treat to see us through until Valentine’s Day—an old-fashioned Molasses Bread. I found the recipe in one of my many antique store recipe booklets, and this easy-to-prepare loaf sounded perfect for wintertime. I

Start the New Year by decluttering your home A report from 2021 stated that the average American has about 300,000 items in their home!

While that is overwhelming, as I look around my home, I’m afraid that is on the low side.

Today I sit in my home not only with the items I built a home around, but with items from my grandparents, my parents, my in-laws and my sister.

All who passed and whose belongings made their way to my home.

I also have items that my children, now grown, didn’t take with them. The sad truth is that as we age, experience life, and out-live family members, we accumulate stuff ... lots of stuff. In fact, 1 in 10 Americans use off-site storage just to hold their excess belongings.

January may be the perfect time to get rid of some of our excess clutter. With colder, dreary weather, staying inside to declutter is much easier than if you wait until the warmer spring days. And as they say ... there is no time like the present. So why not get started.

Uncluttering a home is overwhelming. But uncluttering a room, a corner, a desk or a drawer can seem much more doable. Just as you eat an elephant one bite at time, you can declutter your home one room at a time. With a plan, you can get your entire home decluttered in just a few months.

First step is to pick a room. Maybe not the worse room, but a starting point. Next, determine if the room can be broken down into sections – starting with a desk, a closet or filing cabinet – may make sense. Once these smaller places have been decluttered you can move to the full room.

Many experts suggest that the best way to declutter is to sort every item into one of three piles: Keep, Throw Out or Donate. If you find it hard to assign an item to one of the defined piles, you can have a “Maybe” pile. These items get a second pass to determine if they are needed or can be let go.

If you didn’t use certain Christmas decorations this year, there is a good chance you wouldn’t use them next year either. If you have broken furniture or appliances that you are planning on getting repaired, one day – that one day may have passed. And if you have gifted items from years past still in boxes, those need to find a new home.

As you are going through and decluttering, be mindful that when you do find an item that you want to keep, be sure that you put it in the most appropriate place. We all have that junk drawer in the kitchen. Half of the items in that junk drawer need to be thrown away while the other half just need to be taken to their rightful place. Making sure all items are in their logical place and remembering to put it back there, helps minimize clutter spots from popping up. Whether that be the kitchen drawer, a countertop or the bottom of the stairs.

The hardest part of decluttering is getting started!

Start small. Pick an area you want to declutter and go. Decluttering is a great way to start a new year.

Put it out the door in 2024!

had some of this bread right out of the oven with a little jam, and you can also serve it lightly toasted and buttered for a breakfast treat. It’s got just enough sugar and molasses to make it slightly sweet, and I can see why this vintage recipe has stood the test of time.

Recipe

Molasses Bread o 1 large egg o 1/4 cup granulated sugar o 1/2 cup molasses o 1/4 cup melted shortening o 2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour o 1 teaspoon baking soda o 2 teaspoons baking powder o 2/3 cup buttermilk

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a medium bowl, beat egg until light and fluffy, then add sugar, molasses, and shortening and blend well. In separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Add the dry ingredients to the egg mixture alternately with the buttermilk and combine. Bake in a greased 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan for about 1 hour and let cool for 10 minutes before removing from pan.

And in another retirement, from the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office: Today was a bittersweet day. Today was the last day Chief Deputy Yarbrough reported to work before his official retirement date later this month. For more than 40 years, Chief Deputy James Yarbrough has remained dedicated to the pursuit of justice in Coweta County. Jimmy began his career in law enforcement with the Newnan Police Department before coming to the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office in 1994. But not before he successfully completed a four-month training stint at the FBI headquarters in Quantico, Virginia. Chief Deputy Yarbrough has been the Investigations Division Director since he came to work with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office. He has instilled a commitment of serving in our agency and serves as a mentor to many. The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office is better by having Jimmy Yarbrough be a part of it for so many years. But much more importantly, the Coweta County community is better off by having Chief Deputy Yarbrough dedicated over 40 years of his life to it, and to our citizens.

Front Porch Stories

We moved into our new home in October of 2022. We live just down the street from our son and his family, so it’s always a treat when the grandlittles walk down to visit.

I often get messages from them for various reasons. Today’s message was to let me know that Jack, (the 8-year-old and also the youngest) wanted to come down. Of course, I said yes, being fully aware that one day these kids will not have time for old folks like us.

Jack arrived soon after, and he came right into my office where I had just settled in to work. I have a daily writing job that allows me time to take a break whenever needed. That’s a good thing, because Jack had a plan.

He gave me a big hug and said, “You know what I was thinking?” I shook my head. “Well,” he continued, “I think we should have a special day and go to the boba tea place.” I was looking at my computer screen and told him I was working, but we could go as soon as I finished.

And then I looked at him.

One should realize that when a grandlittle asks you to do something with them, there is a power that cannot be denied. Jack’s particular power involves beautiful blue eyes, striking blonde hair and a smile that starts in his soul and keeps going all over the room.

I immediately succumbed to the power.

I snapped my laptop closed and said, “Hey, let’s just go. I can work anytime.”

Even though we are seniors, the grandlittles have all sorts of things here to enjoy. They could play video games, board games, swim in the summer, roast marshmallows in the winter. But Jack came right to me with his idea, and he wanted to do it with me.

It only took a minute and we were in the car putting on seatbelts.

I drove him to his house so he could ask his sister and brother if they wanted to go also. Shortly, we were all piled into the car and headed to the boba tea place. It was 10 a.m.

I parked right in front, close enough to see the sign that kept us from going in. “Open 11 a.m.” Nearly an hour to wait. But we were committed. I had three kids in the car with the promise of boba tea. Three kids that one day would be too grown to ask me to take them somewhere special. I was in it for the long haul.

There was a frozen yogurt and bakery shop nearby. They were open, so we went in and decisions were made.

Jack decided frozen yogurt with some toppings would be even better than boba, so he made his selection and settled down to enjoy it. The oldest agreed with the yogurt choice and sat down with his brother as they compared toppings.

The middle one held out for boba tea, which was fine because I was enjoying that extra hour just being with them. Jack also “needed” a cupcake, so I told him he could get one to eat later since the sugar intake was probably at max with the frozen yogurt.

Finally, the boba tea store opened and the grandgirl got her favorite blend.

Boba tea tastes great, as does frozen yogurt, but nothing compares to the sweetness of a little guy wanting to spend time with an old grandma like me.

City of Newnan celebrates opening of Fire Training Facility

From Special Reports The City of Newnan celebrated the completion of the Fire Training Facility on 473 Greison Trail on Tuesday, January 9.

Complete with a burn building, educational training room, and office space, the facility offers opportunities to train the Newnan Fire Department in the latest techniques.

Mayor Keith Brady thanked the following for their role in the completion of the training facility: the Citizens of Newnan for their support of SPLOST, which funded this training facility, the City Council, New South Construction Company‘s Rob Ragan, Scott Meeks and Brad Bringle, WHP’s Capt. Rob VanBibber, 2WR Architecture’s Alex Grigges and Kelly Wilson, Newnan Utilities, and Newnan City Staff, specifically Cleatus Phillips, Hasco Craver, Ronda Helton, Fire Chief Stephen Brown, and Mike Furbush.

“We appreciate so much everybody’s attention to this project. You’ve heard me say it a thousand times, but I’ll say it again: public safety in the City of Newnan is top of the list always. It is the most important thing we do for our citizens. You men and women are a critical part of that mission and we appreciate everything you do every day,” shared Mayor Brady.

A community wide public safety event will be announced in the spring and will afford the public an opportunity to visit the facility and observe training. Fire Chief Stephen Brown shared, “I look forward to welcoming the public and giving them a glimpse of the wonderful training we will be able to do in this facility.”

2024 Real Estate Forecast

If you have been keeping up with the news, you may have heard the forecast from many economy experts stating they expect interest and mortgage rates to decline in 2024. This is great news for our local real estate market.

After a slower September and October, I have seen an unusually busy holiday season in real estate. The listing inventory has been

steady for this time of year. I have also seen an influx of buyers jump back into the market. This is very unusual for this time of year and a great indicator for 2024.

The real estate market typically follows mortgage rates which follow interest rates. If you have read my previous articles, I have covered this correlation before. I recently wrote an offer on a home for a buyer whose mortgage rate was 6.3%. This is a great improvement from when rates were above seven percent and closer to eight percent late this past summer and earlier in the fall. Several industry experts have forecasted rates to decrease closer to five percent in 2024. This would cause buyers, who have been waiting for the rates to improve, to jump back in the real estate market, thus creating more demand and driving prices up.

Increased buyer demand is a double-edged sword, however. If rates drop too quickly and demand increases too swiftly then you can see home prices shoot up very quickly also. If prices are too

An important factor for 2024 will be the speed and frequency at which the Federal Reserve drops interest rates. The Fed will need to be sensitive to this as not to create another housing bubble. Since I am writing this around Christmas, there is a very famous book that preaches the importance of moderation. Why Lung Cancer Screenings Save Lives Known as the silent killer due to its lack of symptoms in early stages, lung cancer is the second most common type of cancer, and statistically the most fatal. The American Cancer Society estimates a total of 238,340 newly diagnosed cases in 2023, making it all the more crucial that those at risk receive screening as soon as possible.

“The most effective way to fight lung cancer is to begin treatment early on,” says William Courson, D.O., who specializes in family medicine, at Piedmont Physicians at Premier Medical in Newnan. “But we can’t do so if you aren’t aware you even have it.

Following the guidelines, getting screened if you’re at risk—it’s all about staying on top of your health.”

Who is Eligible for a Lung Cancer Screening?

To qualify: • Age 50-77 • Smoking history of 20 pack years (one pack a day for 20 years or two packs a day for 10 years) • Current smoker or stopped in the last 15 years or less • No current pulmonary symptoms, such as worsening cough, coughing up blood, or shortness of breath • No unexplained weight loss So, how does it work? The screening process itself is a straightforward CT scan—no injections or medications are involved. The screening-eligible patient will simply lie still on the table that will slide them through the doughnutshaped scanner, taking only 20 seconds to complete.

Afterward, your physician will then receive your results and follow up with you via phone call to discuss next steps.

In the event that your CT scan comes back with normal results (hooray!), our recommendation is for you to continue annual CT scans so that we can monitor any developments, or ensure you’re actually in the clear. Your nurse navigator will guide you through the entire process and remind you when it is time for your next screening or for additional tests. *Please note that 30 to 40 percent of lung cancer CT scans show abnormal results. Most of these results will be noncancerous (benign) but abnormal scans require close follow-up and further testing.

If you think you may be at risk for lung cancer, contact with your primary care physician to see if you meet the eligibility criteria for a low-dose CT (LDCT) screening exam.
