Enjoying a day on the lake with a loaned WaveRunner through Yamaha’s Employee Equipment Loan Program. Cecil Wood made his neighbors jealous without even trying. He spent a week riding all over his large neighborhood on a new Yamaha electric bike. Every afternoon, along a route of more than two miles on the streets near his home. How did he like it? “I just had an awesome time,” he said. Where did he buy the bike? He didn’t. The vehicle was a loaner. As an employee of Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Company, Wood was able to take advantage of a new program through which he could reserve the use of either a Yamaha e-bike or a WaveRunner produced at the Newnan plant after completing a safety course. Wood was initially skeptical about the supposed ease of participating, but he soon found out it was true. So he wound up on a bicycle for the first time in about 20 years. Why is Yamaha going to such efforts to put Yamaha products in the hands of their employees? It speaks to a Japanese concept that we don’t have an English word for, Kando. It’s the deep satisfaction and excitement you find in discovering something of value. “We are the Kando-creating company,” said Bob Brown, Vice President of Operations. “We want to provide it to our end customers, and we certainly want it for our employees. If they can have the kind of deep emotional experience and excitement in using our products, we know they’ll connect on a deeper level to their work and coworkers, too.” Christopher McGarity, a factory control unit manager, said “We don't really get a chance to try Yamaha products unless we buy them. So to me, this kind of puts some skin in the game for employees that have not been exposed to products other than building them,” said McGarity. “That was really great from my experience, being able to get my hands on it and actually use it.” The program isn’t just e-bikes, there is also a fleet of WaveRunners at West Point Lake. Yamaha Division Manager, Jason Broshear, has taken his family out with him, “It’s seamless. You go out, have fun on the lake, fill up the WaveRunner with
gas, return it to the dock.” The WaveRunner is produced locally, at the Newnan plant. “A lot of our employees may never actually see an end product,” said Broshear. “For example, a forklift operator in our distribution center only sees the parts and shipping operation. They never get to see the products coming off the end of the line. To utilize a WaveRunner that they don't have to worry about purchasing personally, is just a great experience. You get to see the parts you're interacting with every day, working on that end product.” This program is intended in part to foster community among Yamaha employees, and those who have participated all agree that it has been a success on that front. “We talk about Yamaha Pride,” said Wood, who has been with the company for about 17 years. “I feel it every day coming to work. So I'm very happy to be part of the Yamaha family.” McGarity echoed the positive sentiments about their employer. “Working here at Yamaha has been a great experience. It's been able to provide that work-life balance as well as great challenges, opportunities and advancement,” he said. “Yamaha has continued to put opportunities out there, and we try to rise and meet the different challenges on a day-to-day basis. So I would tell anybody that if they could become an answer to a problem, then this is a great place to work, a great place to learn and give back to the community.” Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation of America designs and assembles WaveRunners, ATVs, Side by Sides, and Golf Cars at the Newnan plant. One of Coweta County’s largest private employers, Yamaha is currently expanding the team, hiring for both contract and professional team members. Full-time direct hires, such as welders and engineers enjoy a comprehensive benefits package, including insurance, 401k, profit sharing, and more. Details are at yamahajobs.com.

Yamaha gets kindergarteners riding bikes at local schools
From Special Reports Kids in Coweta County are learning to ride bicycles, and the folks at Yamaha are helping make it happen. Three elementary schools in Coweta – White Oak, Moreland and Welch – are participating in learn-to-ride programs thanks to All Kids Bike, a national nonprofit that teaches kindergarten students how to ride bikes during physical education classes. The program was made possible locally by a $100,000 grant from Yamaha Motor Corp, USA via its Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative (OAI). But the company’s involvement does not end there. A number of employees at the Yamaha Motor Manufacturing facility in Newnan spent a day assembling bikes. Armando Torres, a continuous improvement technician, was enthusiastic about the bike build. “When we were approached to help with this specific project, I had no clue Yamaha was as invested in the community as they are. And it does make me proud to work for a company that actually cares about the community enough to give back." The bikes were delivered to White Oak at a special celebration Nov. 8. The ceremony revealed 24 balance-to-pedal conversion bikes and included a first-ride opportunity for some very excited kindergarteners. The American Academy of Pediatrics states that riding a bike is considered a developmental milestone for a child. The All Kids Bike program, now in more than 1,000 schools across the nation, helps students develop physically and mentally. It also gives them greater confidence, reduces stress, and provides better focus in the classroom. Jon Jones, the PE Teacher at White Oak agrees. “We’ve been on scooters already to teach them spatial awareness and direction. They’ll learn balance using these bikes. It’s a lifetime activity that they can use.”
With school leaders as well as parents working to get kids to reduce their screen time and become more active, Yamaha is a natural choice to partner on this project as the company’s entire product line encourages outdoor recreation.
Yamaha has funded a total of seven bike programs in Coweta County, all at Title I schools. Additionally, nonprofit partners in the community funded an additional three Title I schools in the program. Many of these children come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and might not be able to afford a bicycle to learn on at home.
Jason Broshear, Yamaha’s Division Manager for Corporate Planning and Sustainability explains. “I was just recently looking at all of the images of my son when he first got a balance bike and what came to mind is the joy it brought him being out in the neighborhood, riding around and meeting new friends. I mean, I remember, I’m sure everyone remembers their first time riding a bike, so just to have every kid experience that feeling is truly what All Kids Bike and Yamaha hope to provide to local communities.
“We are a Title I school. Some of our students are on free and reduced lunch. They come from all different neighborhoods in our community, and they all have different needs,” says Kim Taylor, the Principal at White Oak. “I feel like there’s a lot of opportunity with the bicycles to learn about healthy habits, to learn about exercise, to learn about reducing stress, to learn new skills. We have a lot of opportunities with these bikes to help our students.”
“We hope that through learning to ride a bike, this provides confidence and empowerment in enjoying the outdoors that stays with them throughout their lives. Yamaha looks forward to having these students as our future customers, our future team members, and our future community leaders.”

Notes from Perry Street
John A. Winters, Publisher, Editor john@wintersmedia.net
The holidays can be fun and exciting, but they can also be crazy, hectic and stressful. For some, it is a sad and lonely time for those who have lost loved ones or are dealing with broken relationships. Holidays, especially Thanksgiving and Christmas, can be full of joy and happiness, or grief and loss.
Corby Carlin Winters, Ambassador at Large corby@wintersmedia.net Levi Winters, Social & Visual Media levi@wintersmedia.net
As many of you know, my education is in counseling. I have also been in full-time ministry and am a Life Coach. During the holiday season I have seen just about every emotion from my clients, church members and my own family.
During this holiday season, it is okay to say you are not okay. Sometimes we need to take time for ourselves, and that may Corby and John Christmas circa 1993 include taking a break from social media. Some of those sites highlight this utopia that other families have. In truth, they create unrealistic standards no one can meet.
It is also important to keep things in perspective. My dear friend Carol taught me that years ago. The question is just how big is this problem on a scale of 1-10. If it is a lower number, then just let it go. Her point was to determine what was really important, what was worth fighting for in the whole scheme of things. In the midst of it all she chose joy. This powerful advice came from a woman whose 22-year-old daughter, and my dear friend, was kidnapped and murdered. It is okay to show ourselves as much grace as we should show to others. Sometimes we need to cry and other times call a friend for moral support or a laugh. Sometimes we need to create new memories and new traditions and sometimes celebrate the old ones. My mom passed away in June 2009 and a year later my dad died two weeks before Thanksgiving. The only time the family could all get together was the week of Thanksgiving 2010 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. While most of America was preparing their stuffing and turkey, I was making flower arrangements to place at the altar and we were writing Daddy’s obituary, wondering if we should include that he died of dementia-related illnesses. Sometimes we have to work around life.
Winters, The SONs, extended family and friends gathered to celebrate the life of Dr. Milton O. Carlin that Thanksgiving eve. We laughed, we cried. I served candy circus peanuts and black liquorice and peppermints, which were all his favorites.
The SONs, who were very young at the time, had a marvelous time. We stayed at the Embassy Suites and every morning we ate omelets at this huge buffet and the SONs swam with friends and family. They said it was their favorite vacation ever. I know that would make my dad very happy.

Later that evening, family got together at a place called the Sushi Train. You sat at long oval tables and a toy train carrying various dishes would come by on an oval truck and you grabbed what dish you wanted. It was like a scene out of Seinfeld. That day we chose joy, love and happiness with grief scattered around. My faith and hope grew much stronger the Christmas of 2012, all due to one family who showed indescribable faith through their loss. The Bacho family and their three daughters had gone skating then to mass and were out enjoying the Christmas lights when a truck ran through a red light and hit their van.

It was three days before Christmas. Natalie’s husband Stephen and their daughter Abby were airlifted to Atlanta. Stephen was in an induced coma for four weeks. On Christmas Day Abby’s organs were donated so others could live.
In her honor, the family has created Abby’s Angels Foundation, which does a multitude of things, including teen driving schools and providing “Abby’s Closets” at every school in Coweta County where students can get free school supplies.
I was so honored and blessed to sing at the prayer We rarely ever really know what any individual or family is breakfast in Newnan before Natalie Bacho shared her experiencing during the holidays. Let the baking begin!
There’s so much to love about November! I’ve started pulling out all of my Thanksgiving decorations, and it’s time to launder and press some favorite linens and double-check that I have enough turkey plates and platters and amber-colored glassware to use on Thanksgiving Day. Setting a lovely table and baking special treats for family and friends are some of my favorite Thanksgiving traditions, and I’m always looking for delicious new recipes to try too. Last month, I came across an apple cake recipe in one of my old metal recipe boxes. That cake was okay but a little bland, so I decided to freeze it and taste it again a week later. The apple cake somehow developed a better flavor while frozen, so I may bake it again one day but will add some spices next time. This month, I wanted to try a cake that tasted good straight out of the oven, and I came across an old recipe for a pear cake that sounded tempting. I do love pears, so that recipe appealed to me, and with last month’s apple cake experiment fresh on my mind, I added some spices to be sure that this time, the cake tasted like fall. Drizzled with caramel glaze and topped with chopped pecans, this tasty cake with a surprisingly light texture is one I’ll be happy to serve this Thanksgiving.
Recipe Spiced Pear Cake with Caramel Glaze o 4 Bartlett pears, peeled and diced fine (1/4-inch to 1/3-inch cubes) o 2 cups + 1 tablespoon sugar, divided use o 3 large eggs
o 1-1/4 cups vegetable oil o 3 cups all-purpose flour o 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
o 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
o 1/4 teaspoon cardamom o 1/4 teaspoon ginger o I teaspoon salt
o 1 teaspoon baking soda
o 1-3/4 cups chopped pecans, divided use o 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
o Caramel Glaze (recipe below)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a small bowl, combine pears and the 1 tablespoon of sugar. In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat the remaining 2 cups of sugar, eggs and the oil at medium speed until well blended. In a medium bowl, combine flour, nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, salt and baking soda. Add flour mixture to egg mixture, beating on low speed until combined. Use a rubber spatula to gently fold in the pears, 1-1/2 cups of the pecans and vanilla. Batter will be very thick. Pour into a greased and floured 10-inch Bundt pan (or spray with Baker’s Joy). Bake for 60-70 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cake cool for 10 minutes in pan before removing to a wire rack to finish cooling, then drizzle with Caramel Glaze.
Caramel Glaze
o 1 cup brown sugar o 1/2 cup butter
o 1/4 cup evaporated milk
Add all ingredients to a saucepan and cook over medium heat. Bring mixture to a boil it and stir constantly for 2 to 3 minutes. Let mixture cool for just a few minutes until thickens slightly, then spoon over cake. Sprinkle cake with remaining 1/4 cup pecans.

Front Porch Stories The best ever Christmases
I’m that person who loves Christmas.
It’s the first hours after Halloween that the media begins to flood us with all kinds of prompts to buy their products. But of course, it’s not the buying that hooks me in; it’s the commercials that feature beautiful decorations, glimmering trees, twinkling lights, and heartwarming moments of family arriving at the homes of loved ones. These commercials often cause me to reflect on holiday meals at mom and dad’s house. We didn’t realize at the time that mom was the cornerstone of our family gatherings. There are four of us kids and we had thirteen total kids and spouses between us. Apparently, that wasn’t enough for mom, because we were also blessed with a variety of aunts, uncles and cousins dropping in to complete the chaotic and loving atmosphere of the holiday meals. I’ll never forget how mom would be busy in the kitchen, days before the big meal, wearing her apron and managing at least five dishes going on at all times on the stove, in the oven and mixing on the countertops. Mom would either be singing or humming gospel songs, and many times dad would join in, his bass voice booming in union with hers. While mom was cooking, sister Carol would play the piano and sister Barbara and I would sing with her, always including the song “Tell Me Why the Stars Do Shine”. Without fail, dad would come in and boom his beautiful voice to join ours. He couldn’t resist the “Tell Me Why” song. When the varied components of mom’s meal were finally simmering, baking or cooling in the fridge, mom would come in and replace sis Carol on the piano, her alto blending perfectly with the rest of us. As a young girl, I envisioned us touring with mom on piano, dad’s bass vocals and all of us girls singing beautifully together. My brother would be our tour manager and attempt to keep us all in line. As I grew up and married, the gatherings only got bigger. I am the youngest, and as the family caboose, I brought along my husband and two children. By this time, oldest sis Carol had grandchildren and the addition brought our number to a gazillion. It was wonderful. With that many people in the same place, we spilled out from the kitchen to the dining room, the living room and the porches. The porches were my favorite places because we could let down our hair and be a little crazy. The smokers would smoke, the jokesters would joke, and we all laughed until we cried.
Volunteers: The Heart of the Salvation Army’s Christmas Programs Volunteers urgently needed to support The Salvation Army’s Christmas initiatives While some may think it is still a little early to unpack the holiday decorations, The Salvation Army has been hard at work, planning Christmas programs for several months. Now, as the red kettles are appearing outside stores, and Angel Trees are being set up, volunteers are needed to help ensure men, women and children in need throughout our community experience the joys of Christmas. The Salvation Army of Newnan is seeking volunteers primarily for its Red Kettle campaign. Newnan Service Center Director Heather Durham of The Salvation Army invites the community to get involved: “Come spend some time volunteering and make a meaningful impact on the lives of countless individuals this holiday season. We have volunteer opportunities tailored just for you, whether you can spare an hour, a morning, or a full day and come as an individual, family, or group.” Become a Bell Ringer –Every dollar collected in the Red Kettle supports The Salvation Army’s social services programs throughout the year right here in Newnan. Bell Ringer Volunteer Details: November 1– December 23, Monday – Saturday
Everything changed when mom passed away. Although she didn’t make huge plans and dictate our family gatherings, it was assumed that we would all be together at hers and dad’s home for the holidays.
How to volunteer: Visit https://signup.com/go/czyRykh and follow the prompts to sign up for the location and shift of your choice, or contact Jennifer Petrino at sabellringers@yahoo.com or 770-251-8181.
None of us were ready for it to end.
Angel Tree Program –Thanks to the generosity of local donors and businesses, The Salvation Army will provide gifts for over 300 children through the Angel Tree program. Families in need submitted their information during the month of October and volunteers have already been assigned to help The Salvation Army of Newnan fulfill each child’s wish list.
Today we are spread out, and no one has a home big enough for all of us even if we all made the effort. We are “busy” with our own, and there’s no “mom and dad” to go to. We are the moms and dads. We are the grandparents. We are the small family that branched off from the big one, the one that mom cherished and nurtured. We are the elders now, and it is up to us to make new memories, however that looks. While I miss the days gone by, I’m thankful to have had them at all. They were the best ever, and a blessing to have experienced. Kathy Bohannon can be reached at kathybohan@yahoo.com. ■
If you’re interested in volunteering to ring the bell, please call The Salvation Army at770-251-8181 or sign up online at https://signup.com/go/czyRykh. To make a donation, or for more ways to engage with The Salvation Army, visit https://qrco.de/beSkOD.

Should I Buy Or Rent?
You may have asked yourself this question before or you might be asking yourself right now. The answer to this question all depends on your current situation in life, finances, where you live and your future plans. Let’s start with your current situation. Are you single? Are you married and expecting children? A home may be the right choice for you if you are expecting children and need more living space or yard space. Maybe you are single but are looking to build some equity in your home and not just writing a check to your landlord every month. Another question is to ask yourself do you have the cash on hand needed for a down payment to purchase? Depending on your financial situation, you can expect to put down a minimum of three to five percent of the purchase price. There are 100% financing plans like a VA loan, if you are a veteran, and USDA, if you
are purchasing a home in a qualified rural area. Contacting a local mortgage lender is a great first step. The lender can qualify you for a loan and walk you through the process. They will look at your income, the amount of debt you have, your credit score, etc. to determine what you qualify for. Where you live and the current real estate market are important factors in your decision to lease or purchase. What does the current market look like? Are home prices up or down? What about lease rates? In Coweta County right now, both home prices and rental prices are up. Despite a decrease in the number of buyers and contracts, home prices have stayed up. Rental prices are up as well. You can expect to pay around $1,300 a month for a 1BR, 1BA apartment and around $1,600 a month for a 2 BR, 2BA apartment in Newnan. For comparison, a monthly mortgage payment on a $300,000 purchase with 10% down at 7.25% would be $1,841.88. Taxes and insurance can vary but this will give you a general idea of what to expect as far as monthly payments. Perhaps the most important factor in your decision are your own future plans. Do you plan to stay where you currently live for the next several years? A good rule of thumb of renting vs buying is that it takes at least a few years to allow purchasing a home to be the better option, financially, than renting and to build equity in your home. The longer you stay in your home, the more the value of the property will increase and the more your home will be worth in the future versus what you paid for it. Also, you will not be taxed for capital gains when you sell the property if your home has been your primary residence two of the last five years. This is a big plus for purchasing a home. Coweta Coweta County 4-H Youth Represent Georgia County in Two National Competitions

Coweta County 4-H is more than just another club; it’s a pathway to excellence and valuable life skills. Youth in 4-H can compete in many areas and we celebrate their achievements. Two teams of talented young individuals from Coweta County 4-H are set to represent Georgia and showcase their knowledge and passion for animal science at National 4-H Competitions.
The experiences of these young 4-H members go beyond ribbons and trophies. Opportunities like these dairy and equine competitions empower these young participants, nurturing their decision-making abilities, critical thinking, and public speaking skills. As they gain a profound understanding of the dairy and equine industries, they are better prepared for future challenges and opportunities.
Coweta County’s State winning Dairy Quiz Bowl Team will compete at the 4-H National Dairy Quiz Bowl competition in Lexington, Kentucky. The team, comprised of Josiah Benjamin, Aurora Cadman, Gillian Ramponi, and Josie Roberson, under the guidance of their dedicated coach Pam Brinton, will represent the state of Georgia in this exciting event.
Georgia's Department of Agriculture highlights the significance of animal agriculture, the largest sector of the state's agriculture industry, contributing over $5.8 billion to Georgia's economy. The commitment of University of Georgia Animal Science faculty and industry experts to the 4-H program is invaluable. They contribute to the curriculum used to train 4-H’ers, ensuring that the youth are well-informed and connected with the practical applications of the skills they acquire. The knowledge and expertise of these professionals empower young minds, laying the foundation for a future generation of leaders in the agriculture sector.
Dairy Quiz Bowl is a fast-paced competition that utilizes buzzers as contestants accurately answer questions related to the dairy industry. The quiz bowl content covers all topics related to dairy production and dairy foods, as well as dairy industry statistics, breed information, and dairy organizations. Confidence, independence, and compassion are life skills that result from participating in 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl. Additionally, the State Winning Horse Judging team, comprised of Avery Pruett, Gabriela Luna, Sylvia O’Neal, and Amanda Chrzanowski, coached by Joanna Lanier, will represent Georgia at the Western Roundup 4-H National Horse Judging Contest in Denver Colorado. Horse Judging calls for contestants to compare their opinion of a horse against the ideal, as specified by industry experts, in conformation and performance classes. Conformation classes analyze the anatomical build of a horse, and performance classes analyze the execution of riding patterns. The equine industry holds a significant place in Georgia’s economy, leaving a remarkable $2.5 billion impact annually. The commitment of UGA Faculty and industry experts to these equine programs is invaluable. They contribute to the curriculum used to train Horse Judging and Hippology contestants, ensuring that the youth are well-prepared and connected with the practical applications of their acquired skills. Their expertise not only shapes competitions but also shapes future leaders in Georgia’s equine sector.
Georgia 4-H empowers youth to become true leaders by developing necessary life skills, positive relationships, and community awareness. As the largest youth leadership organization in the state, 4-H reaches more than 225,000 people annually through UGA Extension offices and 4-H facilities. For more information about how to get involved with Dairy Quiz Bowl, Horse Judging, or any of the other youth development programs Georgia 4-H has to offer, contact your local University of Georgia County Extension Office at 770.245.2620 or visit www.georgia4h.org. Bill Hammond is the Coweta County 4-H Youth Development Agent. His role includes overseeing all 4-H programming in the county including specialty clubs, S.A.F.E. (Shooting Awareness, Fun and Education) teams, volunteers, school clubs, and other 4-H programs and events.

Doctors Speak with Community about Lung Cancer and How Early Detection Through Screening Can Catch When Treatable
On October 24, Piedmont Newnan Hospital hosted a Dinner with a Doc in the Thomas F. Chapman Cancer Wellness Center to educate the community about lung cancer, its risk factors and how early detection can help reduce the number of deaths that occur from lung cancer. Windy Dean-Colomb, M.D., medical oncologist, Diana Santiago, M.D., radiation oncologist, and Shankar Kandaswamy, M.D., Pulmonologist, all participated in the panel discussion, led by Marsha Suber, director of oncology services at Piedmont Newnan.
Major risk factors for lung cancer include tobacco use and exposure to cancer-causing substances. These substances include many chemicals, gases, and inhaled dust particles found commonly both in the workplace and the environment. To help detect lung cancer earlier and increase the chances of longterm survival, Piedmont Oncology offers lung cancer screenings using low-dose computed tomography (CT) scans of the lungs for high-risk individuals.
According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 226,000 new cases of lung cancer are diagnosed in the U.S. each year. Known as the “silent killer,” lung cancer can develop without symptoms early in the disease. Most cases of lung cancer are found in later stages without any symptoms.
School Principal, Mom of Two, Hopes to Bring Awareness to Breast Cancer
Just seven months ago, Dr. Malika Gonzales received news she never thought she would hear: She had breast cancer. During a self-breast exam, Gonzales, 44, felt a lump, and with no family history of breast cancer and always having normal mammograms, she went solely on her gut and scheduled a visit to her doctor. With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Gonzales hopes this month serves as a reminder that it can happen to anyone and that women should listen to their bodies if something doesn’t feel right. Since turning 40, Gonzales has scheduled her annual mammogram for November. The screenings had not detected any sign of cancer, just that she had dense breast tissue. In January of this year, Gonzales started feeling a weird sensation in her right breast and just a month later pain in her nipple. When she performed a self-exam, she found a lump the size of a grape. “I knew something was wrong when I felt the lump and knew I needed to get it checked out,” said Gonzales. She immediately saw her OBGYN, who referred her to have an ultrasound and biopsy. That’s when she found out she had stage 1 breast cancer. “I want to tell women to be aware of their bodies and listen and be their own advocate,” said Gonzales. “Age doesn’t matter, we need to be diligent in doing self-exams and knowing when something isn’t right and get it checked out immediately.” With her diagnosis of breast cancer, Gonzales was immediately referred to Windy Dean-Colomb, M.D., medical oncologist at Piedmont Physicians Medical Oncology in Newnan. “When I initially found out it was a shock, but I just had to have faith,” said Gonzales. “Dr. Dean put a plan in place and made me feel comfortable. She is very communicative and always takes time to talk to me.” Gonzales’ care plan included chemotherapy, a double mastectomy which removes both breasts entirely, immunotherapy infusions, and she will soon start radiation. “It is important to have a village of positive people to support you through your journey,” says Gonzales. “Chemo was hard and you have to have help. I am so thankful to my family, friends and coworkers who have supported me these past few months.” As a wife, mother of two girls, and a school principal, Gonzales keeps busy and is surrounding herself with positivity and faith. “During chemotherapy I couldn’t eat and lost 27 pounds, so now I am enjoying eating again,” she says. “I had to go to the emergency room a few times and Dr. Dean took time to come see me and check on me.” Before her radiation starts, Gonzales has been taking time to do self-care and enjoys reading, watching television shows, and being outside and breathing in the fresh air. She hopes her story resonates with others, as it shows how important it is to take notice of any changes in your body and not to ignore these changes. To schedule a mammogram, visit piedmontmammo.org.

CT lung screening is a test that takes just a few minutes. Research indicates that early detection with a CT screening may reduce the odds of lung cancer death by up to 20% compared to conventional X-rays.
To qualify for a CT Lung Screening, a patient needs to meet the following criteria: • Age 50-77 • Smoking history of 20 pack years (one pack a day for 20 years or two packs a day for 10 years) • Current smoker or stopped in the last 15 years or less • No current pulmonary symptoms, such as worsening cough, coughing up blood, or shortness of breath • No unexplained weight loss If you think you may be at risk for lung cancer, call your primary care physician or a pulmonologist to see if you meet the eligibility criteria for a low-dose CT (LDCT) screening exam.
Piedmont Newnan Offers Innovative Treatment for Enlarged Prostate
This October, Piedmont Newnan Hospital became the second hospital in the Piedmont system to perform Aquablation, an innovative, minimally-invasive surgical procedure to treat an enlarged prostate. Using traditional visual imaging as well as robotic technology, a surgeon controls a heat-free waterjet to remove problematic prostate tissue that is obstructing the bladder. “Aquablation doesn’t require an incision and takes less than an hour to complete,” said Roger Chen, M.D., a urologist with Piedmont Physicians Newnan Urology who, along with Micah Blackmon, M.D., performs the procedure at Piedmont Newnan. “We’re able to operate with precision, tailoring to the patient’s anatomy, so there are fewer complications and a faster recovery time.” Symptoms of an enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, are frequent urination or difficulty emptying your bladder. Left untreated, an enlarged prostate can lead to urinary tract infections, bladder stones, and damage to the kidneys. “Men with these symptoms are often concerned with side effects from surgery, specifically incontinence and sexual dysfunction,” said Dr. Chen. “Because we have two types of imaging at use in this procedure, we can see the entire prostate in real time and help prevent side effects. This procedure has a very low rate of irreversible complications and has been proven to provide years of relief from symptoms.” For more information on Aquablation, call 770- 400-4630 or visit piedmont.org/urology.

n The Meaning of Green
Green is the color of hope, renewal and well-being.Green Light is also a term commonly used to activate forward movement. The simple action of changing one light to green is intended to spark a national conversation regarding the recognition of veterans, and “greenlight” them forward as valued members of our communities.
Show Support for Veterans with a Green Light I have mentioned many times that I am a proud Army brat. My daddy and my granddaddy both served in the Army. Fun fact, there was only a 12-year difference between my maternal granddaddy and my daddy. Here’s the backstory. My grandmomma had my mom when she was 15 years old. Granddaddy, who was one year younger than my grandmomma, met and married grandmomma four years later and adopted my mom. My daddy was three years older than my mom, who was 17 when they married. Thus, a father-in-law and son-in-law were only 12 years apart in age. This age difference worked to their benefit during the Vietnam war. They both served in Long Bien, Vietnam, an urban district of Hanoi, at the same time. Being so far away from home, having each other there truly helped. Back to my point. I am proud. I am proud of who they were and what they did for our country. I am proud of the countless other soldiers and family members who have served and who are serving this country. If you watch the news everyday, you have reason to be thankful for the men and women who selfishly give of themselves for our freedom. When in uniform it is easy to pick out our military members. Thank them. Share our appreciation. But when they are not in uniform, they walk among us unnoticed. Sometimes I wonder if we truly understand what they gave for us and for our country. This November, I would like to invite you to join me in showing support to our veterans and

The color green was chosen because green is the color of hope, renewal and well-being. The simple act of changing one light to green is intended to spark a national conversation regarding the recognition of veterans and military personnel. It would show them they are supported and are valued members of our communities. Please join Home Helpers, CareQuest Solutions, ASK Georgia HospiceABOUT and Palmetto ParkYOUR in honoring our veterans by changing one light to green – on your porch, in your home or in your office. Get assistance with heating bills, weatherization
Page 14 H The WEEKLY H November 22, 2023 H www.wintersmedia.net
Prices are going up on practically everything, and as colder weather arrives, this can make it difficult for many to afford the costs of heating their home. Federal and local programs are helping those who qualify with home heating bills, and some natural gas companies are offering senior and military discounts. The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), a federally-funded program, is back this year to assist consumers with their home energy bills and weatherizing their homes against cold weather. Local organizations, including The Salvation Army, are also aiding those in need with utility bills.
n LIHEAP LIHEAP provides financial assistance with home energy, gas or propane bills for households that meet certain income requirements. The program is designed to reduce the risk of health and safety problems such as illness, fire or disconnection. It also offers support for weatherization or minor energy-related home repairs. Appointments will be available for senior households (65 and older) and the medically homebound starting Dec 1. All other households are eligible to apply Jan. 2. LIHEAP appointments can be made online or by phone. To request an appointment, folks can call 706-702-3040, if you’re a resident of Coweta, Carroll, Heard, Meriwether or Troup counties, or visit www.cafi-ga.org and select “Click Here for Energy Assistance” to schedule your appointment. After making an appointment, applicants will bring the required documents and complete an application at a Community Action for Improvement (CAFI) Service Center. Eligibility for the program is based on income guidelines and important documents, including proof of income for all household members for the past 30 days, Social Security cards for all household members, the most recent copy of the household energy bill (gas or electric) and valid U.S.-issued photo identification.
Applicants must meet the following requirements: 1) be a U.S. citizen or legally admitted immigrant, 2) have a total gross annual household income at or below 60 percent of the State Median Income Guidelines for Georgia and 3) be responsible for paying the cost of energy bills for the household or be able to verify an energy burden. In addition, the applicant’s household energy supplier must be a registered vendor for the LIHEAP program with the Department of Human Services. Those determined eligible to receive LIHEAP assistance will be informed of the amount of aid that will be applied to their energy bill. The LIHEAP benefit will be issued directly to the household energy supplier. CAFI agencies process LIHEAP benefits in the order received and processing times can vary, so customers must continue to pay their bill until benefits have been issued to the household energy supplier. Applicants are served on a first-come, first served basis until funding runs out. n Home Weatherization LIHEAP’s Home Weatherization Program helps to reduce the home energy bills of low-income households by making these homes more energy efficient. The program provides direct household repairs and energy efficient upgrades that increase the energy efficiency of homes. To apply, visit www.cafi-ga.org and select “Click Here for Home Weatherization Application.” Applications for the program are accepted on a rolling basis, and applicants must meet eligibility requirements.
