Blaze levels Cow Bay barn KEVIN ROTHBAUER CITIZEN

A large dairy barn and some connected buildings were destroyed in a massive fire at Cuthbert Farms south of Duncan on Saturday afternoon.

No people or animals were injured, but the barn, an attached meat-cutting business and a building used to store hay and equipment were all razed by the flames.

The Cowichan Bay Volunteer Fire Department responded with two engines and two tenders of its own, and summoned mutual aid from Mill Bay and Duncan as well. About 35 firefighters from the three halls attended the scene. They were first called out just before 3 p.m., and left around 11 p.m.

Time to mobilize to reject Bill C-51: May “Imams and mosques should be comfortable enough to call someone and express their concerns about an individual,” she said.

In reply to questions about Bill C-51, May said she thought everyone should work to get the Liberal Party to stop supporting it, even though she understood that Liberal leader Justin Trudeau simply backed it so he could not be accused during an election of being soft on terrorism.

“I know; that’s outrageous and cowardly.

Most Canadians oppose C-51. I’m still hoping it won’t pass. If the Liberals shift, I believe we can peel away some Conservatives, too,” she said, pointing out that the Tories scrapped the long form census because it was gathering too much information.

A man in the crowd asked if there was any chance of proportional representation being introduced to replace the first-pastthe-post system of electing representatives that Canada now uses.

May said that Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom are the only countries left who use that system, which “allows a minority of the vote to elect a majority government.”

“That’s bad for voter turnout. And it punishes people who want to cooperate. It creates real viciousness,” she said.

Asked what the leaders of the NDP and Liberals were willing to do to work together with the Greens, May said, “It’s grim. I’ve attempted to talk to them. Let’s say I’ve been rebuffed.”

With the new Cowichan-Malahat-Langford seat possibly seen as a swing riding in the upcoming federal election, May was asked if the Greens and NDP could split the vote and let the Conservatives get in.

May said she was more concerned about “vote abandoning” than vote splitting because a big percentage of Canadians simply don’t vote at all.

“I’d like each of you to go person-to-person,” she challenged. “We need a buddy system. Find someone who didn’t vote in 2011 and drag them to the polls, on an advance poll day so there’s time if they have problems.”

The Green leader called herself “living proof” that vote-splitting does not work.

“Political parties are so arrogant; they talk about their vote. It’s not their vote,” she said.

The federal government’s so-called antiterrorism bill (C-51) needs considerable revamping before the Conservatives should even consider passing it, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May told a big crowd at Shawnigan Lake Community Centre last Sunday.

However, opponents of the legislation — like herself — have taken heart because some changes have already been made.

“We’ve already had a climb down. It takes a lot to get Stephen Harper to amend a Conservative piece of legislation,” she said, urging the audience, “this is the occasion to mobilize to get the bill rejected.”

She gave a short rundown of C-51, which she described as an omnibus bill covering many subjects but, she said, “our prime minister’s desire is to make us seem a nation at war.”

May said she thought Bill C-51 had been dressed up “to make people fearful” and then to tell them the actions in it will keep them safe.

She described the bill in general as “primarily an election tool” but also called it “an attack on rights and freedoms.”

A major concern about the bill is that it appears aimed at getting rid of public protests, even though it does not rule against “lawful public dissent,” she said. That

doesn’t cover a lot of cases and could “scoop up environmental concerns,” May said.

“When you say ‘lawful’ what do you do about civil disobedience, or the Raging Grannies who may have forgotten to get a licence for their demonstration? And what about wildcat strikes?” she asked.

On top of that, May said that many agencies, including the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, will also be expected to hand over their information.

“Do they think ISIS wants a herring licence?” she asked, to gales of laughter from the crowd.

She then relayed a comment she had heard, warning the government that if they are looking for a needle in a haystack, don’t add any more hay.

The run-up to bringing this bill to the committee stage in parliament has seen a lot of experts giving testimony but the Conservatives attitude has been “to shove them through like meat through a grinder,” May said.

She also said that she was worried that the bill would allow the monitoring of private conversations, saying, “It’s important to deal with radicalization of young people but if you even raise concerns this law could criminalize the conversation.”

May said she was concerned that across Canada it’s essential to build bridges with Muslim communities, not push them away.

There was both good and bad news from BC Ferries last week, but the net effect is that a trip will cost riders more as of April 1.

BC Ferries announced a tariff increase approved by the BC Ferries Commissioner and a fuel rebate, which will absorb some of the bite to riders’ wallets.

The tariff will raise fare for vehicles and passengers by 3.9 per cent on average, but the fuel rebate, totaling one per cent, will lower the impact to a 2.9 per cent increase.

The fuel rebate is expected to remain in effect at least through the summer, Ferries said in a press release.

“We know that fare affordability is an issue for our customers and because we’ve hedged a considerable amount of our diesel fuel costs over the next fiscal year, we are pleased to be in a position to introduce a fuel rebate which will help lessen the impact of the tariff increase,” said Mike Corrigan, BC Ferries’ president and CEO. “While we actively manage the business and reduce expenditures wherever possible, the fare increases are directly associated with increased operating costs and capital replacement.”

BC Ferries has also added 58 extra sailings for the Easter long weekend, beginning Thursday, April 2.

Extra sailings will run from April 2-6 and affect the Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay (42 extra sailings), Horseshoe bay-Departure Bay (10 extra sailings) and Horseshoe Bay-Langdale (six extra sailings) routes to accommodate an expected bump in traffic.

Ferries recommends making a reservation for the times that are expected to be the busiest, identified as mid-day Thursday to late morning Friday from Vancouver to Vancouver Island. The holiday Monday afternoon is also expected to see a large number of people returning to Vancouver.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation as of Tuesday morning.

“It was a very fast fire,” Cowichan Bay fire chief Charlie Brown said, noting that within minutes of the firefighters’ arrival, the flames had spread throughout the structure.

Coming to end of Earth Hour? We hope not e need to be aware and save energy more than ever.

Yet, this year’s Earth Hour produced the lowest results yet, by quite a margin.

The provincial energy load was lowered by a mere 0.2 per cent.

In previous years we managed at least one per cent, and in the first year, we managed a whole two per cent.

It’s a disappointing figure.

Have we lost interest in the principle, or just in this particular event?

We hope it’s the latter, but fear it could be the former.

Our environment is precious.

Every way we have of producing energy has some impact on it — some more concerning than others.

Oil and gas exploration and fracking can be devastating to our land and natural resources like water.

Coal, a form of creating energy that seems like it should be more in keeping with a Dickens novel rather than a modern society, creates air pollution and other concerns.

Other, far more renewable energy sources (which is where we should be putting out money

for expansion) are better — a lot better — but still not perfect.

Hydro, while a relatively clean energy producer, can create environmental concerns when huge dams used to produce it significantly change the landscape and watercourses where they’re built.

Wind power causes some concerns about noise, the space it takes to make it work, and impacts on wildlife.

Solar is one of the most promising technologies, but creating the panels isn’t emission-free, and remains a relatively small piece of the energy pie (though

we hope that will be changing in the coming years).

And energy demands are only expected to increase.

The fact of the matter is that we are energy gluttons.

We should be doing our part all the time to try to reduce our consumption.

Yet it seems that even one hour a year is too much to hope for now. We hope this isn’t the beginning of the demise of Earth Hour.

Earth Hour’s importance isn’t just in the amount of energy saved, but in the concept and principle of the thing.

Earth Hour makes us focus on our energy consumption for just a few minutes.

It’s an interesting exercise to go around and turn everything off that we normally just leave on without thinking about it.

There are the lights (often in more than one room), the computer, the television, the cable box, the stereo, the cell phone charger and myriad other devices that populate our daily lives.

The hope is that after Earth Hour is over, we continue to turn off all the extra stuff.

Let’s do better next year.

SIA dirty dirt permit ‘infuriatingly stupid’ B.C.’ s Ministry of Environment has upheld their decision to turn Shawnigan Lake into another sacrifice zone.

“Fast profits take precedence over community health and sustainability” seems to be the Liberal government’s reckless, heedless motto. This is also reflected in the Mount Polley disaster and the massive fracking of the north east to give away our gas at rock bottom prices to Asia, willfully ignoring the degrading consequences to B.C.’s once pristine fresh water.

Common sense would say that granting permission to a shell company, (no assets), to

dump contaminated soil beside Shawnigan Creek, on a hill, right above Shawnigan Lake, is infuriatingly stupid. But this is science, says Minister Polak.

Someone should tell her that science, by definition, means independent peer reviewed studies, not “data” provided by engineers paid by the company, upon permit approval. What was their engineers’ great “scientific” solution? Pile the really toxic material three layers high in a plastic bag so it won’t degrade, but will leach into the watershed, forever.

What a legacy!

Our Cowichan Valley economy will suffer from this rash decision. A healthy economy is embedded in a healthy environment. No one wants to invest,

or visit, or fish, or farm, or do business, or live, in a place that is contaminated. Victoria needs to realize that trucking contaminated soil to the first available quarry at the top of the Malahat may be expedient for them, but, for us, this is an act of harmful endangerment.

Do we, as residents, just accept this greed and blindness? No. If we are sacrificed by our provincial government, then this only increases our resolve. We will continue to fight to protect our watershed and become a model for the future, and for other communities in B.C. who face threats to their watershed.

Fascism is a relatively new word in the lexicon.

“Fascism is a belief in the supremacy of one national or ethnic group, a contempt for democracy, an insistence on obedience to a powerful leader, and a strong demagogic approach” according to Webster’s.

I have yet to see Harper trucking folks of a different ethnicity or political beliefs off to camps, he has not invaded another country, he cannot command obedience to himself, and of course he serves at the pleasure of the population.

For sure we all have issues with Harper but what are our real choices when it comes to the next election?

Mulcair is not Jack Layton and cannot win outside of Quebec.

Trudeau is not his father which can perhaps work in his favour in Alberta (and maybe not).

Mr. J.M. Steven does the rest of us no good when paranoia overcomes common sense.

Denying child bus service over bill wrong

I known my child would be left at the school, a 20-minute drive from my home.

At no time was I contacted by phone. At no time was a personal notice sent to me from the school/transportation office. If you are going to implement a program that leaves six-yearolds with no ride home, I would hope that some physical notice or possibly direct contact with me would have been important to you. After all, if I had been unable to drive to him that day, he would have been left even longer than the 50 minutes that he was left yesterday.

I am sad and scared that this happened. I think it is absolutely unacceptable that small children are denied a ride home by a school bus. A routine I drilled into his head daily, to ensure no confusion or panic for him. If my

lack of payment can cause this much possible confusion and embarrassment for my son, a new system needs to be in place.

This arbitrary decision to leave him behind, while other children in the same situation rode the bus, is and will always be, absolutely unacceptable.

I am considering contacting the media. I am considering any way possible to ensure that NOT ONE MORE CHILD is left behind. Not ONE MORE CHILD is left to feel sad or scared or unsure. This is not public transit, and this is not something that should EVER be treated as such. If that big yellow bus is not a safe way to always get our children home, we have made a grave mistake somewhere along the way.

The fact that the data presented shows that the facility and the location are inappropriate for this type of facility, the majority, if not all of the residents are against this facility, as well as the local governing body, should have some weight in this discussion. It appears this is not the

case. Why should the residents of Shawnigan Lake be sacrificed for the monetary gain of one party? It makes no sense in modern society. We have a voice and it needs to be listened to by the people in Parliament; they are there to serve our needs and protect us are they not?

I received a call from the school yesterday (March 25) at 2:40 p.m. advising me that my child was refused service on the bus.

My son, Kyden, is six years old.

I had indeed forgotten to pay the bus bill. I received two emails: one on Feb. 6 and another March 3. The Feb. 6 notice was simply an invoice. The March 3 notice did indicate that Kyden would need a bus pass for March 25, but did not indicate anywhere that he would be refused service if he did not have one.

I had only skimmed through the note at the time, but remember thinking that it was nice to be informed with a notice.

Safeguards can’t eliminate the risk I am very disappointed at the Environmental Appeal Board’s decision [released Friday, March 20] to allow the continued dumping of toxin-contaminated soil in the Shawnigan Lake watershed.

I am not comforted by any measures taken by South Island Aggregates in terms of storing the soil because if and when something goes wrong, those measures will mean absolutely nothing: it will be too late and we, the residents of Shawnigan Lake, will be left to deal with the fallout.

No amount of downplaying or apologies or cleanup efforts will be able to undo the damage.

Beyond that, who knows if SIA will actually try to clean up any disasters it creates?

What if SIA conveniently dissolves before any problems are detected?

Who will deal with cleanup attempts then, and who will pay for them?

Us, of course.

I think the core of this issue boils down to common sense: should toxin-contaminated soil be stored just uphill from a watershed, near a creek that feeds said watershed?

Of course not.

That’s absolutely absurd.

No amount of safeguards can eliminate the incredible risks associated with such a stupid, foolish endeavor.

They may mitigate the risks but when we are talking about our water, a basic necessity of life, I will not accept the mere mitigation of risks. I will not accept them regardless of how much SIA and the Environmental Appeal board assure us that everything will be fine.

I mean, they are the ones who think putting contaminated soil upstream from a watershed is acceptable.

They’re delusional to believe that in the first place so how can I trust their judgment on anything else?

I can’t. I refuse.

Lake Cowichan residents need to understand that the school board has no plans to close Palsson Elementary School, trustees decided March 24.

The Cowichan Valley board of education was looking at what to do about Grade 4s at the Lake — they are currently divided between two schools — while helping the area’s really young kids get ready for school.

Sheryl Koers, assistant superintendent of schools, told the board decisions need to be made soon about both those questions.

When the entire school district was reconfigured in 2012 and A.B. Greenwell Elementary was finally closed following years of camping out at Yount School after its own building was closed due to mould, Cowichan Lake parents were given a choice.

They could either keep their children at Palsson for Grade 4 in an elementary school setting for another year or see them attend class at the newly-reorganized Lake Cowichan School in the old secondary school building.

A meeting held March 4 to talk to parents about their situation didn’t really present a solution, she said.

And there are other problems to address, most notably now to ensure that young children are prepared for school.

As first reported last year and reiterated again this year, the early development instrument (EDI) statistics are troubling there, showing many children are not ready.

“The EDI shows 51 per cent of them are extremely vulnerable. If we don’t catch it, it will compound in school. The question is how do we support that early learning?”

Koers said.

The community has asked for a Strong Start program and one would be most worthwhile if it could be at the school site, she said.

Parents have indicated they want all the Grade 4 students together and want the board to make a decision about that, Koers said, indicating there is room at Palsson to accommodate the intermediate students and an early learning program but it would involve using all the portables now on site.

“There are opportunities for Grade 4s at both schools. Both do it well, but they are different,” she said, refusing to play one building against the other but sharing that staff at Palsson like the idea of keeping the kids at their school.

Muddying the waters considerably for trustees was the mood of the people they met at the recent meeting at the Lake.

“There seemed to be some angst

about a closure of Palsson,” said Rob Hutchins, who as a new trustee, is new to the Cowichan Lake school discussion.

Koers agreed.

“The unfortunate thing for Lake Cowichan is there is a huge fear,” she said, adding that residents look nervously over their shoulders at LCS’s capacity to easily absorb all of Palsson’s population.

“That’s always going to be a concern for them,” she said. “There’s always a fear when you remove a grade. But I made it clear that the board never talked about closing Palsson.”

Trustee Cathy Schmidt said, “The Lake needs stability; those folks have gone through way too much,” explaining to new trustees that the Cowichan Lake area has seen Honeymoon Bay, Stanley Gordon, Yount and A.B. Greenwell Schools close.

“I’m concerned that there’s an awful lot of empty classrooms, though. That’s alarming,” she said.

Koers said that looking longterm at the situation, the Lake Cowichan enrolment looks “fairly stable”.

Superintendent Joe Rhodes admitted that during the talks about restructuring the district, “we did look at K-12 at LCS.” However, the cost of converting part of a secondary school to include primary-age children “was astronomical and led us very much away from that path,” he said.

“We took that off our agenda. We were looking at two schools after that,” Rhodes said.

Hutchins asked, “How can we move forward rather than have a discussion based on fear?”

He called for staff to prepare a policy statement saying the district was maintaining Palsson as a free-standing school.

Spilsbury wanted action.

“The longer we delay the more anxious people are. We need something timely.”

In the end the trustees decided to have district staff make enquiries to gather information so the board could make a decision about the Grade 4s as soon as possible.

Spilsbury said that she was also “very keen” on addressing the early learning situation.

Koers said the Education Ministry isn’t going for fully fledged Strong Starts at present but “we could open in September, two to three days a week, and piggy back that with the [Cowichan Community Resource] WOW bus. The ministry would approve that,” she said.

Spilsbury said, “this is a high priority for us. We need to devote some early learning resources to it. That establishes the school would have an early learning component.”

Worried South End residents asked national Green Party leader Elizabeth May if there’s anything that can be done to help them with their fight against the dumping of contaminated soil in their watershed.

May was at the Shawnigan Lake Community Centre Sunday, March 29 to talk about Bill C-51 (the so-called anti-terrorism bill) but the full house was also concerned that actions taken to shut down protests could hurt their ability to voice their fears.

Kyla Mortil, who came dressed as a water goddess and was one of several who carried signs, asked May what the residents could do to help their case.

Shawnigan Lake residents have just lost the first round of a long, hard-fought legal battle with a ruling coming down that dumping at a Stebbings Road gravel pit can continue.

May sympathized and had some advice for the crowd.

“I would file for an injunction,” she said, explaining that Shawnigan Lake residents could claim the dumping “will create irreparable harm. You have an arguable case for that. I totally support that you shouldn’t have dumping start while you’re still appealing it.”

Resident Mark Granfar told May, “This community is upset. We have no power. The political system doesn’t seem to be addressing our concerns. How can we influence those in authority to make a change?”

May replied that it was “not federally possible just now” but promised to do everything she could.

“Nothing ever changes unless people are willing to keep fighting against horrible consequences.

Even with C-51 it’s unlikely they will round us all up right away. We can act,” she said, concluding, “If you decide you’re all going to get arrested, just let me know. I’ll join you.”

One Duncan institution gone, one faces uncertain future

H

ere’s coincidence for you: After more than a century of service, one of Harry Smith’s creations has come to the end of its venerable career, while the future of another is uncertain.

I’m referring to his Duncan Emporium Building, known in its final days as the Red Balloon Toy Shop, and his Cowichan Leader, latterly the Cowichan News Leader Pictorial.

I've already told how Harry came here

from Port Townsend just prior to the last century and how he staked and sold the two richest copper claims on Mount Sicker before moving to town to open his general store.

It was to promote his Emporium that he got into the newspaper business. It took him three tries to get it right with the Cowichan Leader. Originally published on the top floor of the Emporium, the Leader moved several times over the years. In 1908, with 21 issues

under its belt and newly merged with the competing Echo, Smith and his new partner, Ormond T. Smithe, published together for all of a month before Smithe bought out Harry's interest in the paper. Less than two years later, Smithe was gone, too, having sold to the Cowichan Leader Printing & Publishing Co. which con-

tinued for a time in the upstairs offices Harry had originally used for a mining brokerage.

By the time assistant editor F.A. ‘Devastating’ fire forced newspaper relocation in March 2003 ONE DUNCAN, From Page 10 to rebuild from scratch with reinforced concrete. The new building originally shared its storefront with W.B. Harper's clothing store.

The detached printing works building as it was described was accessed by a lane from Kenneth Street. It was made with reinforced concrete construction, and was the first of its kind in Duncan with its eight-inch-thick walls and the roof supported by huge beams of Douglas fir so that no posts interrupted the floor space. It was meant to be as

fire-proof as possible. The front of the building facing on Craig Street was finished with California stucco, also said to be a Duncan first.

After the Second World War increasing stock and bindery work necessitated that the space then rented for an antique shop be put to work. Even these improvements were insufficient for long and in the ’70s new owner Andy Bigg merged the Leader with his Pictorial in a former frozen storage plant beside the law courts, behind Garner's Building Supply on Government Street. After a subse-

quent marriage with the competing Cowichan News, the Cowichan News Leader Pictorial relocated to the former Doman building on James Street. A devastating fire in March 2003 forced yet another move to their current quarters on the Trans Canada Highway by Buckerfields. On Friday, March 13 Duncan’s oldest newspaper had spent 110 years recording the events, large and small, of day-to-day life in the Cowichan Valley. “So long old friend.....it’s been good to know ya!” Part 3 So the decision they had made to uproot their lives was quickly endorsed, and after settling down in a little place over the Lions Gate Bridge on the North Shore, they transformed themselves from wide-eyed newcomers into hard working Canadians. .L.J. soon decided that teaching would be a more worthy career than selling, so he quit work, and with his wife’s support, studied for his degree down in Washington State and returned home to join the staff of Windsor Secondary School on the Mt. Seymour Parkway.

The couple found themselves another house higher up their North Shore mountain which provided a better view of the inlet from among those towering trees.

That decision almost cost them their lives, because in the great October storm which swept through the Lower Mainland in the fall of ’62, (and aptly named Typhoon Freda), one of their giant Douglas firs snapped like matchwood and came crashing down. It shattered their roof and split the bedroom ceiling wide open. The massive intruder abruptly stopped — inches away from the pillows where they were sleeping.

Lady Luck had smiled on them again and she did so a couple of years later, when the 20-odd foot cabin cruiser which they had lovingly built from scratch was readied for launching. She was hoisted on slings in a North Vancouver boatyard and while being lowered into the water below, one sling slipped and the boat plunged 20 feet. The hull split open on impact.

N.L.J. was inside the cabin and couldn’t stem the inrush of water, but he managed to squeeze out and swim away as the little vessel sank beneath him. Undaunted, he salvaged and rebuilt his boat and she eventually provided them with many pleasant days puttering around the B.C. coast and exploring the deep, quiet waters of Deep Cove, where she was berthed.

Around this time, our friend developed a fondness for flying, despite his scary initial experience. It prompted him to take lessons and obtain his licence. So it became no big deal for them to charter a little plane, fly up the Fraser Valley and then head over the border for a picnic. But each year they travelled more widely than that — even to North Africa and Italy — to tread the ground where the old battles had been fought. A priority for them was to get together annually with the veterans of the D.L.I. in Durham, to share some memories and join with them in the cathedral regimental chapel. A special service was always held to honour the thousands of old comrades who didn’t make it back home.

When retirement loomed, our couple looked westward again, this time to Vancouver Island. They wanted to leave city life behind, to enjoy uncrowded space and the blessings of peace and quiet. They found what they were looking for in the Cowichan Valley: four sunny, grassy acres, just around the corner from Crofton. And there was a big bonus for them in the deal, because almost next door was a large family they had been close to for many years, over on the other side of the Straits. They too had had enough of city life and their children were thriving in their

new environment. As our friends had no kids of their own, they always connected easily with other people’s.

N.L.J. started pouring foundations on their lot and framed the roomy rancher that they had spent so much time designing together. He finished most of the house himself and put in a little garden and a duck pond, before erecting a large barn to house the half dozen sheep that were meant to be part of their rural idyll.

They chose a couple of collie pups from the top breeder on the Island and got very interested in sheep dog trials.

Then it was time to get involved in Valley activities. To serve their spiritual needs, they joined the congregation of St. Peter’s little church on the way into Duncan. And of course, being competent musicians, fond of the choral litany, they were soon persuaded to join the choir.

That’s about the time my wife and I met up with them. So, while taking on various responsibilities in our community, they also proved to be a constant, happy influence in our own lives. The trips we took together, the conversations we shared and the wonderful meals we enjoyed, all morphed into the special memories that we stored away during those years of friendship. And we still have them.

In saying goodbye to N.L.J., we’re joined by the little circle of people who recognize and remember a gentle man. He lived a full, adventurous life to the ripe old age of 93, during which he demonstrated the values of learning, culture, old-school good manners, loyalty to friends and total devotion to his partner.

His hobby in later life was wood carving, and the hours he spent in his immaculate workshop produced many exquisite pieces now treasured by his friends. He and I shared many interests. They included flyfishing, motor racing, rugby and growing dahlias, but we both had a special regard for Shakespeare, his poetry and his plays.

So in closing this little tribute, I’m moved to quote those trenchant lines from “Hamlet” where the prince is talking about the king, his late father: “He was a man. Take him for all in all. I shall not look upon his like again.”

N.L.J.’s wife Rosalind is still with us, living comfortably in her own private little world of extended care. But whenever we

Mozart meets Mercury in ballet LEXI BAINAS CITIZEN

Jakob Herriett is 17 years old and plays in the senior Frances Kelsey concert band class. He is progressing very well and also recently performed as a member of the Cowichan Consort Orchestra’s trombone section in their concert of Grieg and Sibelius music.

The low brass musical sections were fun to perform, he says. He studies with band director, trombonist John Evans, and is participating on Kelsey’s USA band trip this spring. He also plays ocarina, guitar, and recorder and hopes to keep playing his trombone in the future.

Comedy and pathos like you’ve never seen it.

The work of a pair of mischievous musical icons is featured as Ballet Victoria brings its production of Amadeus: Dances with Wolfgang to the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre Friday, April 10, starting at 7:30 p.m.

The show originally premiered in 2013, and follows Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s tumultuous career, blending the passion and drama of his musical genius in a poignant ode to the artist.

Although the ballet is predominantly set to Mozart’s Requiem, it also includes rock music by Freddie Mercury of the band Queen, drawing a parallel between the two musicians, and pointing out how their demons and the lifestyle consumed each of them.

Paul Destrooper, Ballet Victoria artistic director and choreographer, likes the idea of connecting different periods in history.

The lives of both Mozart and Mercury ended tragically early. Audiences will feel the pain Mozart suffered, knowing he was dying with so much incredible music left inside, to be lost forever to silence, Destrooper says.

“The pageantry with which both lived lends itself well to the drama of dance,” he said. “This ballet is about raw passion, about lives with flair, it is dramatic but as always, has the light touches of humour Ballet Victoria is known for.

“The choreography comprises classical and contemporary ballet as well as other genres including hip hop. The mix of styles and music may sound odd but works seamlessly because of the dramatic development,” he said.

So, watch for Matthew Cluff in the lead role of Amadeus with Andrea Bayne as his muse, literally the instrument of his creativity.

Amadeus debuted to standing ovations in 2013.

In his 2015 version, Destrooper has upped the amps and promises even greater insights into the artistic passion of two surprisingly similar lives.

Cowichan sisters make L.A. awards splash LEXI BAINAS CITIZEN

The Valley first heard about it in a Facebook post from Cowichan Bay’s Irwin Killam that simply gushed parental pride.

“OH MY GOSH!!! We just received the mother of all news!! ALORA and LILY have been nominated for the YOUNG ARTIST of the YEAR AWARDS in Studio City CALIFORNIA!!!!!! They are nominated again for Alora in (My Fair Lady) with the South Island Musical Theatre Lily for (Les Mis) at the Chemainus Theatre!! They will walk the red carpet with stars like Elle Fanning (Maleficent), Lilla Crawford (Into the Woods), etc........ Thanks SO MUCH to the nomination team (whoever you are).

This will be an amazing opportunity for them and I promise the girls will do British Columbia and all of Canada very proud!!!

Thank you again to all of you for supporting and believing our kids!”

Lily is eight years old and was that age when she performed, too. Alora is 11 now; she was 10 when she appeared in My Fair Lady.

The family travelled to Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago with hopes high, but not sure what they’d find, Irwin Killam said.

They arrived ahead of time to enjoy L.A. and Hollywood but eventually made their way to a venue called the Empire Ballroom in Studio City on the evening of March 15.

The 36th Annual Young Artist Awards lived up to their dreams, however. Lily won her category.

“It’s pretty much what you would expect from the Golden Globes and Oscars but a miniature version. It was beautiful, it was glamorous, it was glitzy, it was professional.

I’m very happy we went. It was a wonderful experience,” Killam said.

Her only regret is that heavy security meant that parents weren’t allowed up beside the red carpet so she couldn’t see her daughters, Alora, 11, and Lily, eight, who had both been nominated for best performance in live theatre by a young actress as they showed off the dresses designed and made in the Cowichan Valley.

“The girls went on inside the venue; there were at least eight different photographers, just like you see on the Oscars’ red carpet.

It was really neat. Then they also had TV cameras from local TV stations there to interview the kids.”

“It was like at the Golden Globe Awards with round tables; we were at a glamorous event.”

The award ceremonies themselves offered another surprise.

“They actually started with the live theatre category. We were down at the bottom of the list and we weren’t expecting it to happen that fast.”

A golden-voiced announcer suddenly said “live theatre” and the family was dumbstruck because eight-year-old Lily had won.

They hadn’t prepared special speeches but Killam had urged them to thank the people who helped them.

“Make it short. And it has to come from the heart, I told them,” she said.

But any cool preparation was blown away by the sudden call to the stage.

“I was saying: ‘Chris, quick, get your camera!’ We forgot to record it. When Lily got called we were all sort of frozen in time.

Nobody moved. I can’t remember. Even my husband said, ‘Did that just happen?’”

A large proportion of the audience had no idea who Lily was so people were looking around to see where she was seated.

“And then I said: ‘Lily, go!’ And she had to go up there. Poor little girl. She asked

me, ‘What do I say? What do I say?’ I told her: ‘You’ll know when you get up there.

Sweetie, just be yourself. It’s okay. Nobody’s judging you.’ And she went up there and they gave her the award — it’s actually really heavy.”

As she watched her daughter standing by the microphone, Killam said she could see the young girl was doing her best to get a grip of herself.

Then she coolly thanked the Chemainus Theatre, her directors for Les Misérables, her community and her family for their support, giggled and stepped off the stage.

“Everybody was clapping because she was the first one up and she was just a little kid.

She was very sweet. It was unpretentious and amazing,” Killam said.

Right away, it was time for more reporters and photographers.

But Killam put her foot down when someone tried to whisk Lily away just as her dessert was being served.

“I could see by Lily’s face she just wanted to eat her ice cream because it was starting to melt. So I said: ‘Can that be in five minutes please so we can let her finish her ice cream? That’s more important right now.’

I thought they were going to get mad but they didn’t.”

A Beverly Hills radio station and another reporter wanted to talk to both girls “because it was a big story down there that two sisters got nominated in the same category. Alora was compared to a miniature Julia Roberts and Lily a junior Audrey Hepburn,” Killam said.

Another fun aspect of the evening was that a lot of people had never heard of Chemainus or the South Island Musical Theatre or even Victoria.

“They knew Vancouver. So I said we’re on an island near it. The girls represented the theatre and our community in a very professional manner but it was surreal. Hopefully it will happen again in their lifetimes but if it doesn’t we’re going to cherish this forever. It’s been wonderful.”

In spring, many people begin to think of travel and the Palm Court Orchestra can help with those dreams, offering a concert entitled Around the World in 80 Days on Sunday, April 12 starting at 2:30 p.m. at the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre.

Symphony goers, movie buffs, and aficionados of British light music are all invited to enjoy a program featuring music from the movies Dangerous Moonlight and The Legend of the Glass Mountain along with a selection of composers that includes Aram Katcharurian, Leroy Anderson, Eric Coates, Robert Farnon and Victor Young.

San Francisco pianist Frederick Hodges returns to Duncan as soloist in The Warsaw Concerto, Henri Litollf’s Scherzo, and Charles William’s Jealous Lover.

Hodges, well known at festivals across North America as a virtuoso ragtime pianist and accompanist to silent movies, goes back to his classical roots for this performance.

But what about those movies?

When the producers of the 1941 wartime film Dangerous Moonlight, starring Anton Walbrook, wanted to use Sergei Rachmaninoff ’s Second Piano Concerto, copyright permission was unavailable.

So producers, needing romance, turned to composer Richard Addinsell who responded with The Warsaw Concerto. This was a piece in the style of Rachmaninoff and was the first of many

The 100th Jackson Cup final was an emotional roller coaster.

Although Cowichan LMG pulled off a 4-3 overtime win over Saanich Fusion at Royal Athletic Park in the championship match, the biggest game of the year for Vancouver Island men’s soccer, nothing was certain until the final whistle. Three times Cowichan held the lead, and three times, Saanich came back to tie it, including once with 30 seconds to go in regulation time, and once with just over four minutes to play in overtime.

“I thought we had it in the bag after a couple of our goals,” said Kevan Brown, who ended up scoring the decisive goal in injury time after 30 minutes of overtime had already elapsed.

“I thought we lost this one three times,” said longtime Vancouver Island Soccer League player Steve Scott, who won his first Jackson Cup after more than 10 years in Division 1, including three appearances in the final. “It feels pretty darn good. The guys worked hard for it. It’s not easy to win.”

“I feel like I played,” said Cowichan captain Jesse Winter.

Despite being unable to see action due to an injury, Winter felt every up and down with his teammates — maybe even moreso, since there was nothing he could do about it.

“It was difficult for me, but the guys dug deep,” he said. “We beat them with our depth. They were bringing guys in taped up, but all our guys were ready to go.”

It was Cowichan’s fifth Jackson Cup final in six years, and third win. The same teams met in the final a year ago, but it was Saanich who prevailed in overtime.

“This one feels really good,” said Brown, whose game-winner was set up by Paddy Nelson, who scored the winner for Saanich in 2014 before switching allegiances.

“Saanich beat us last year, so it was nice to come back and get revenge.”

Scott was starting to get nervous late in overtime when it looked like the game could be going to penalty kicks.

“I was supposed to be one of the penalty-kick takers,” he said. “I wasn’t sure I could do it.”

Three second-half goals by Ali Garnett helped the Cowichan Cougars come back from a 1-0 deficit to beat Saltspring 3-1 in the Frank Leversedge Cup final at Lochside Park in Victoria last Sunday.

Cowichan coach Tanis Ballard had expected a tight match between her Over 30B women’s soccer team and the Saltspring squad, and that’s exactly what transpired.

“As usual, the game was pretty closely played with scoring opportunities on both sides of the field,” she said.

Courtney McGeachy had a strong game in the Cowichan net, and the defence held Saltspring at bay, allowing minimal scoring chances.

“Our outside midfielders were given great space to allow them to quickly take the ball up the field,” Ballard added. “This allowed us additional scoring chances that Saltspring didn’t have with Ali able to capitalize on three of these chances from the outside left.”

No Cowichan team had ever won the Frank Leversedge Cup before. This season marked the first time a Cowichan team had advanced past the first round of the tournament.

The first half of the game was dominated by Cowichan. Defender Tyler Hughes opened the scoring 28 minutes in on a free kick that deflected off a Saanich player’s head. At 42 minutes, Saanich managed to score on a rare furlough into the Cowichan end, but less than a minute after that, Scott headed in a cross from Andres Algarin after it slipped through the Saanich keeper’s hands.

In contrast to the first half, Saanich dominated the second. Cowichan keeper Scott Brown, in only his second appearance with the team, was up to the task until the last minute of regulation when he gave up the tying goal on a Saanich corner kick.

Rather than getting dismayed by the late goal, Cowichan kept coming, and took the lead again in the 109th minute when Cooper Barry, who came to Cowichan along with Nelson last off-season, scored against his former team on a hard shot from way out that just evaded the keeper’s grasp. Saanich tied it again at 116 minutes, leading to Brown’s heroic header in injury time.

Saanich’s Chris Peereboom was named MVP of the game, but Martin felt Brown deserved the honour.

“How can you be on the losing team, the centre-back who had four goals scored on him, and get the MVP?” Martin asked.

“Kevan was our best player. He played two hours at centre mid and scored the winning goal.”

Martin predicted a week before the final that the championship game would feature more goals than last year, and he was right, as the seven goals eclipsed the one scored in 2014. He also said that Cowichan would need goals from someone other than Nelson, who had eight in the first three rounds of the tournament. Again he was right, as four players not named Paddy Nelson did the scoring. And finally, Martin said the game would be an exciting one regardless of the result. Correct once again.

“Both teams just laid it on the line,” he said after the game. “They gave it all they had. It was too bad someone had to lose.”

That made for an excellent show for the soccer fans that packed the stands in the constant drizzle, something the players truly appreciated.

“All the players want to thank the fans for turning out,” Martin said. “We have the best fans in the league, by far, and they proved it by coming down. It really does inspire the boys.”

At halftime, Hughes was named to the Jackson Cup Half-Century Team, honouring 16 players whose brilliant careers, both in and out of the VISL, included at least one appearance in the Jackson Cup final.

Hughes was the only active Div. 1 player recognized. Martin felt Hughes deserves recognition, but as much for current his work with Cowichan FC, where he runs training sessions, as for his career achievements.

“He deserves a lot of credit for what we’ve been doing,” the coach said.

Next up for Cowichan LMG is the provincial tournament, which will begin on April 19, when the team hosts Abbotsford on the Ladysmith turf at noon.

After reviving the rugby program at Frances Kelsey Secondary last spring, players and coaches carried the momentum over to this season, and success was quick to materialize.

Prior to spring break, Kelsey beat Spectrum 45-7 to win the third annual Malahat Challenge Cup, and after two weeks off, got back into action with a 34-0 win

in their first road game at Mark Isfeld in Courtenay.

“It was an extremely physical contest,” assistant coach Tom Fogarty acknowledged. “But our dominant scrum and hard running eventually paid off.

Dallas (Moose) McLaughlin and Alex Hedley were named players of the game for their hard running all day and solid tackling, with McLaughlin also contributing a try.

Also scoring were Karl Mattison, who had two tries, and Saxon Ashbee, Connor (Lanky) McGarry and captain Chad Garriock, with one each. Taylor Martin was able to slot a pair of conversions before he had to leave the game with a dislocated shoulder. Fogarty hopes to get him back in action before playoffs.

Next up for Kelsey is a home game against Cowichan Secondary at 3:45 p.m. this Thursday.
