Sinking derelict raising ire of Cowichan Bay residents LEXI BAINAS CITIZEN

Another derelict boat, this one leaking oil, has become a problem in Cowichan Bay. The area has had a history in recent years of people parking derelict vessels of all sizes there but concerned local politicians and residents have so far had little success in dealing with the situation.

According to Brian Thacker of Pacific Industrial & Marine, located at the Bay, derelicts have been a real problem lately with the wind storms but that is coming to a head. “There’s one there that we saw sinking yesterday and it is leaking so I phoned all the emergency numbers and as usual nobody wanted to do much then.

But, having said that, the Coast Guard is there right now. They just phoned me. His boss is in a meeting so he is waiting to find out what to do.�

Thacker and his crew, however, have been busy. “Well our office is down in the Bay here and I’ve been ranting to [Cowichan Bay Area Director] Lori Iannidinardo because in the last month or so we’ve had crews go out and rescue three different boats that have broken loose and floated in here,� Thacker related. “We pull them out and tie them

Cowichan Valley resident Maureen Gold has a hard time sleeping, so she was understandably annoyed when, at 2 a.m., shortly after she had managed to nod off, the phone rang.

She was even more annoyed by what came next.

The man on the other end of the line told her that someone had used her Visa credit card to buy something on eBay for $300. “I don’t do eBay,� she said.

Worried, she went and got her card, to make sure it was still in her possession. She informed the man on the phone that she had it.

Then he asked if she could tell him the numbers on the back.

Wide awake now, Gold realized what was going on. “So I said, in so many words, I’m not giving you anything off my credit card. I used a few expletives, but anyway, then he hung up on me,� she said.

In the morning, Gold called Visa who told her the company would never call after 8 p.m.

44 families still need a sponsor to save Christmas LEXI BAINAS CITIZEN

Tough times have pushed Cowichan Neighbourhood House to send out a last minute call for help.

According to volunteer Arlene Robinson they still need sponsors for 44 families in their hamper campaign this year.

“We had 50 still on the list but we’ve had six more adopted, but we’re desperately looking for help for sponsors for the others. We’re on the phone constantly. We’ve been to different stores and stuff.

I’m sure we’ll do it but it’s just more difficult this year. I think the times are harder. People are just concerned about their jobs, their own work,” she said.

“Last year we didn’t have any trouble filling the list right off the bat and this year it’s been a real struggle right to the end. People are saying: ‘Gee, I did it last year but this year we’re really counting our pennies, we’re watching what we’re spending. It’s tight out there, especially because the majority of the people that sponsor are not wealthy. They’re just everyday neighbours who want to help out. Now they’re just con-

Robinson said she’s pleased in one way that Chemainus folks are keeping an eye on taking on extra spending but it still means that Neighbourhood House is

scrambling.

“Right now it’s a case of so many people being unemployed. And it’s not just young people but all ages.

Some of the people that come in here have really good educations and can’t find a job. It’s a difficult time for everyone,” she said.

The number of families on the

list is about the same as last year.

“But this year we’re getting calls from people that are referred by Salvation Army or by the food banks because their cut-off dates were at the beginning of December.”

It’s meant even more of a push in Chemainus.

“In the last two days I’ve had to tell 10 people, ‘Call back on Wednesday and we’ll see what we can do.’ But I have to fill the ones who have already filled out forms first. Then I will take anything extra and spread it out amongst the people that are left the best I can. I could easily have another 10 people but I have to do these first.

Once I have them I will carry on and do the others.

“So that’s what we’re up against right now,” Robinson said.

Volunteers are preparing hampers right now.

“We usually get them out just before our annual community potluck dinner, which is being held on Saturday, Dec. 20 this year.

[Doors open at 5:30, with dinner at 6 p.m.],” Robinson said.

“We’re trying to get all the hampers done by then so I can give my volunteers a well-deserved break

    

but if not we’ll be carrying on until next week,” she said.

“Last year we actually handed one out on Christmas Eve so you never know.”

“Some of the families we have include two senior citizens who wouldn’t be celebrating Christmas at all if we didn’t help them out. We have one large family; we try to do the big families with the kids first and worry about us adults later but we want to help them all,” she said.

The centre’s volunteers are busy right now, gathering the final things to top up the hampers with Christmas dinner fixings and Robinson posted notices on the Cowichan Neighbourhood House Facebook page urging people to buy both turkeys and hams to donate because turkeys are expensive this year and a smaller family might be very happy with a small ham.



At least one Meadow Park area resident is investigating the possibility of a class action suit against the Municipality of North Cowichan following the announcement of the most recent solution to a contentious sewer issue in the subdivision.

David Kirkness, who has lived in the area since 1967, said that he’s very concerned that North Cowichan is acting in a way that seems contrary to the Official Community Plan.

That document states: “the municipality will extend municipal services to rural areas only under exceptional circumstances.”

Further on it says, “any new sewer extensions will not be used as a basis to facilitate or support additional density.”

Those two comments are a big part of why Kirkness is unhappy with a council decision Nov. 6 to approve a sewer extension for a limited area that would allow property owners Ken and Kim Langkammer to build their own extension to service property they own and hope to develop.

The extension will be 100 per cent paid for and constructed by the Langkammers but there is also a possibility for other property

owners in the area to hook up to it if they wish, and at their own expense.

The possible expense involved is another reason Kirkness is unhappy with the municipality and wants to look into a class action suit. “I want to protect the residents from being overcharged,” he said. “We need more transparency about the figures. They keep using estimated costs.”

A long and tangled argument has entailed over several years as the municipality, the Langkammers and the other property owners in Meadow Park have tried to find a way to combine the Langkammers’ proposal to develop their land with the problem of failing septic systems in that area.

But Kirkness said that the issue has been clouded by some of those concerns.

“It’s all about development, not health,” he said. “If they put a shovel in the ground, it means things change. The sewer should not be extended into rural areas to increase density.”

Other areas where residential development has encroached onto rural land may also eventually form part of a class action suit, he said, adding, “I’ve given these guys more than enough chances to make it right.”

A Victoria man will be spending the holidays in police custody following a chain of events that began with threats and an assault at a Duncan 7-Eleven last Wednesday.

We are all deserving of a little Christmas cheer he trees have been trimmed and the lights are shining bright.

Wreaths hang on doors and the smell of Christmas baking fills the air, along with a comfortable nostalgia for tradition and Christmas past.

But it’s out of reach for a staggering number of people in our Valley.

Last year Neighbourhood House gave out about 120 hampers, and the numbers are about the same this year.

That’s a high level of need for such a small area.

And there are other organizations that hand out hampers as well, so that’s not even close to the Valley’s full tally of those who need help to have a Merry Christmas in 2014.

These are folks who walk by us and work beside us every day — you may even know some of

them, though you likely don’t realize they are so close to poverty.

Many more are only one pay cheque or one lost job or one medical problem from it.

Buying a few Christmas gifts or donating a little money for Neighbourhood House volunteers to buy gifts will not solve all of the recipients’ problems.

But what it does do is show them that someone cares.

Especially at this time of year that’s important.

It can be the boost they need for a happier New Year with a fresh start.

Perhaps next year they’ll be able to reach out and help someone else, the way they have been helped.

A modest gift can be the light in the darkness.

And consider how happy you can make a child when they wake up on Christmas morning and their parents can give them a token of love.

They can create a memory of magic and joy.

No child should have to be reminded on Christmas that they’re poor.

They’re still deserving. We all are. Please donate.

City of Duncan needs a highway bypass There are many concerns about the daily gridlock and road accidents on Highway 1 through Duncan.

We have seen Highway 1 traffic increase through Duncan from 12,000 to over 50,000 vehicles per day in the past 10 years.

There have been more than 1,200 accidents including fatalities in the past six years along Highway 1 from Boys Road to Herd Road.

This is the Trans-Canada highway and heavy traffic loads are really affecting Vancouver Island and local business and public safety.

It requires leadership to get

everyone working together on the Duncan bypass road.

The original main road through Duncan along Allenby Road by Cowichan Tribes offices and over the narrow bridge often becomes the route of choice by locals increasing traffic and safety risks.

A traffic study by URBAN Systems in 2005 was prepared for the City of Duncan, Cowichan Tribes council, District of North Cowichan, Cowichan Valley Regional District, South Coast Region of the B.C. Ministry of Transportation. The report includes four alternate routes or highway bypasses.

The west route is most practical as it basically follows the Hydro power lines from Cobble

Hill Road south of Dougan Lake near Valley View Centre north to Highway 18 near Tansor turnoff to connect to Highway 1 at either Herd Road or Westholme Road. Mainroad Contracting is located at Tansor for Highways maintenance.

The bypass or Cowichan connector would have no stop lights, could possibly incorporate a cycling route to connect with the Trans Canada Trail along with wildlife underpasses making it a positive feature for the region.

This would allow shoppers and visitors to relax and enjoy the Duncan core making it more dynamic and safe, creating a destination rather than the typical “I can’t wait to get through Duncan” bottleneck congestion

experience, well known by Island travelers.

Solution: A well-planned bypass. If not now, when? When the land is no longer available, when the vehicle numbers climb to 100,000 per day and the cost is prohibitive? The emissions, accidents and potential of no highway through town in the event of an earthquake make this a timely project.

The Transportation Ministry is aware of the situation and needs to hear from the public to help move it forward.

Thieving Grinch steals pink cat sculpture from decorations We put up a modest Christmas lawn display but the Grinch has taken our Christmas spirit.

Saturday morning (Dec. 13), we discovered the theft of some of the decorations. The five candy canes we can replace but the thief took a special treasure — a pink cat mesh wire sculpture (the unseasonal hue owing to it having been sold as a fundraiser for Breast Cancer). See photo.

This theft doesn’t warrant a 911 call but we will file a report with the North Cowichan RCMP. If anyone notices the recent addition of a pink cat (a little over two feet high) to a lawn display, please report it to the police.

If you are a cat lover who has just been given an obviously used pink cat display (missing some pieces), this was not bought at a thrift store for you — it is stolen property! Please return it to us.

With the broader local priorities this year I am hoping even more local businesses and groups can benefit.

We know that job growth is stalling and in November, Statistics Canada reported the loss of 10,700 full-time positions. That makes programs like Canada Summer Jobs even more important since youths are unemployed at rates more than double that of the rest of the working-age population.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish my constituents and their families a very happy holiday season.

Trillium Terrace also being used as speedway I read the letter by Peter Buehl with sadness. A young dog lost his life so that someone could save a minute. I have had a dog seriously injured by an aggressive driver. Her injuries cost over $6,000. She lost her innocence after the accident.

Companies are getting priority over the little guy with air pollution I saw in your last issue that we are not to burn our fireplaces on certain days.

Am I to assume that the Crofton Mill will also stop their pollution and stink on those days or is this only aimed at a few ordinary folks keeping themselves warm and trying to save a few bucks on hydro?

Busy week of busts for RCMP KEVIN ROTHBAUER CITIZEN

The second week of December was a busy one for the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP, who responded to 306 complaints and calls between Dec. 8 and 14.

Among the big issues they dealt with were road safety, thefts, and drugs.

Road safety: Four impaired driving investigations resulted in drivers being taken off the road. Two others were issued 24-hour prohibitions for driving while impaired by drugs.

One car was pulled over in Duncan after it was seen travelling at speeds above 140km/h in a 60km/h zone. The car, a modified import model, was impounded for seven days and the driver was issued a $483 ticket.

Police also responded to eight separate motor vehicle incidents, with wet weather playing a part in five of them. There were no serious injuries, and alcohol did not appear to be a factor.

The RCMP Traffic Section urged motorists to plan ahead.

“Slow down when the roads are wet, and drive according to the conditions of the roadway,” Sgt. Chris Bear said. “You should take a taxi or have a designated driver if you plan on drinking.

Alcohol and speed are two common contributing factors in motor vehicle accidents, both are preventable.”

Thefts: Seventeen thefts from vehicles were reported over the week. Seven of the vehicles were believed to have been left unlocked. Items taken included loose change, gift cards, groceries, a car stereo, phone chargers, licence plates and tools. Drivers are reminded not to leave valuables in their vehicles and to make sure their vehicles are locked and secure.

During a call to keep the peace while someone was moving out of a residence in Duncan, one sharp-eyed officer spotted a mountain bike that had been reported stolen in November. It was one of several bikes in various states of disassembly in the residence, and has since been returned to its owner.

Drugs: Two separate arrests in drug trafficking cases were made during the week. The drugs seized were believed to include cocaine, heroin and crystal meth.

“The amounts of drugs seized were not large, but taking any amount of illicit drugs off the streets helps to make our community safer for everyone,” Cpl. Jon Stuart said.

He wasn’t sure why the vessels were all arriving in Cowichan Bay. “Most of these boats are a case of people getting wide-eyed.

Maybe they’re given them and think they’ll fix them up or whatever. But then they just become a liability and it’s not getting dealt with,” Thacker said.

Meanwhile, an equally frustrated Iannindardo has been watching the boats as well.

“We have had quite a few [derelicts]. In the last windstorm I know the residents pulled one up themselves; it was tied to the CVRD dock.

“But now there’s one that’s actually leaking oil; it’s just off of the Western stevedoring terminal.

Iannidinardo said she understood Thacker’s frustration with one additional aspect of the situation, too.

“He told me, ‘With all you environmental groups it’s eel g rass, it’s the foreshore, it’s breaching the dike. But where is everyone when it comes to all these boats I keep collecting?’ It’s another example of not being able to keep up with all this environmental mess,” she said.

Part of the problem is that not all the vessels are as big or as noticeable as the derelict SS Beaver that sank not long ago at Cowichan Bay.

“There are a lot of people who just moor their derelict boats [and they are not] necessarily just great big ones. The SS Beaver was a larger one. It was heading for the Cowichan River and Brian Thacker’s people actually tied it up to the Dolphin there.

“He’s going, how much do I have to do on my dime with my employees? Aren’t there supposed to be people out there to do this? His other point was why didn’t the CVRD take it over but that’s a whole other ball game. And he’s also wondering how Sooke and other places did get their derelicts cleaned up and we haven’t managed. He can sit and see it out of his office window. It’s an expense to his company. He had a lot of good points,” she said.

North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP reported two other scams to be on the lookout for as well.

Cpl. Jon Stuart said that the first involved a victim who got a phone call from someone claiming to be from a computer software company, and that their computer had been hacked because their licence with the company had expired.

The victim transferred money to the company to renew the licence before realizing it was a scam.

The second scam involved a victim being hired through an online advertisement to do a variety of tasks.

The person was given a cheque and told they could keep the leftover amount, which would equate to about $25 per hour. The victim was told to wire money overseas, then buy two cell phones and send them to the United States.

“The victim began to suspect it was scam before sending the phones, but unfortunately the funds had already been sent overseas,” Stuart said.

Of course, when the assault started, the regiment wasn’t at full strength; much of this I’ve gathered from accounts I’ve since read.

Getting back to my recollections, my memory of what transpired after Huskins and I got back on the Causeway completely fails me. I suspect I must have helped Huskins back to the Regimental Aid Post. I’m sure by then I must have been completely exhausted after all those hours of almost continuous action.

On hearing my story about the Causeway, my wife Dot and a friend said, “Why, you went up and down the Causeway six times!” Not quite: Halloween night, almost to the far end and back the same night, looking for the rest of “B” Coy. How far that was, I don’t know. Back up to #12 Platoon again and returned to the eastern end of the Causeway with [them]. November 1st: All the way to the end of the Causeway, proceeding south on Walcheren [Island] for about 4-500 yards, returning to the Causeway and then to the eastern end with Pte. Huskins. So I don’t know what that [totals] but I do know one thing: It was absolute hell.

One thing does come back to

me. Whether it was in the first night’s action or during the second day’s, I can’t say for sure but I think it was the second day when I received a slight graze over one eye, which really amounted to practically nothing.

However, the second one was slightly more serious. A partially spent piece of shrapnel hit me in the backside (to use the polite term). It went in about a halfinch and bounced out...

At the regimental Aid Post I was ordered to lower my pants and my long underwear. The medical officer took a look at it, cut off a large square of bandage, put it in the palm of his hand and slapped it into place.

He gave me a big shot of rum and said, “Back you go.” So much for my hope of getting a “Blighty” (a wound bad enough to get you out of the war but not bad enough to handicap you for life).

Well! Back to the Causeway battle. I don’t recall what happened but I assume I rejoined my company. The situation for the Calgary Highlanders became so hopeless that in the end the whole regiment had to retire.

Sunfest Country Music Festival has announced its 2015 headliners.

Led by four-time Grammy Award winner Keith Urban, the lineup also includes Lee Brice, Joe Nichols, Thomas Rhett and Sam Hunt.

The well-attended event at Cowichan Exhibition Park, which has expanded to feature some of country music’s hottest Nashville stars, expands in 2015 to offer four nights of entertainment on the main stage.

Kicking off Sunfest and making his Vancouver Island debut on Thursday, July 30 is Lee Brice, who recently sold out Madison Square Gardens and was awarded Song of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards following his gold album Hard 2 Love.

On Friday night, the headliner is charttopping Joe Nichols, whose debut album went platinum and who recently launched his own label, Red Bow. He, too, will be performing on Vancouver Island for the first time at Sunfest, bringing a taste of Nashville to the west coast.

When the huge announcement was made at Sunfest 2014 that four-time Grammy Award winner Keith Urban was coming to Cowichan in 2015, the cheer rocked the nearby mountains.

Urban, whose accolades include CMA’s Vocalist of the Year, has won eight Academy of Country Music Awards, as well as penning five multi-platinum albums, performing 16 Number One songs and even been nominated for a Golden Globe, takes the stage Saturday, August 1, 2015.

T he Shawnigan Alliance Church is back with its annual nativity play Saturday, Nov. 20 and this year the group will present the “Mary WHAT?!” script from its rotating trilogy.

This is the 11th year for the outdoor show and they presented this particular version of the story in 2005 and 2008 and 2011.

This year, the production will be presented outside the church at 6 p.m. and again at 7:30 p.m.

Church secretary Deborah Gammer is a real cheerleader for the event.

It’s got live animals and drama outdoors,” she said. “Every year we have around 100 volunteers who all take an end, serving and showing the community story of

Christmas. This year the script is our second in the trilogy and the fourth time we have performed it.”

And there’s even more for families after the show.

“Inside the church we have homemade cookies, hot chocolate and carol singing. Downstairs we have crafts for the kids to make and take home,” Gammer said.

The church invites the surrounding community to enjoy the presentation free of charge every year as a public service with the result that many, many families have made attending it part of their Christmas traditions.

Christmas Eve services will be held at the Shawnigan Alliance Church at 6:30 and 8 p.m.

25th year for family favourite LEXI BAINAS CITIZEN

The Royal City Youth Ballet Company’s production of Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet, The Nutcracker, is back at the Cowichan Theatre for the 25th time with two long-awaited shows just before Christmas.

“This is an established and wellloved holiday favourite,” said Kirsten Schrader, CVRD Arts and Culture Division manager.

“Children who first saw it here in the ’90s are now bringing their own children and introducing them to a world of Christmas magic.”

Performances are scheduled for Friday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 20 at 1 p.m.

That means fans have double the chance to get tickets to see the Sugar Plum Fairy, the Russian Dancers, Mother Ginger, the Christmas Eve party and all the rest of the fun.

Note: the Saturday show begins at 1 p.m., which may seem a little earlier for those of you who haven’t attended The Nutcracker

for a few years. Be sure to get there early enough if you need to park nearby as the event draws a big crowd.

The production varies from year to year, depending on who is available to dance but nothing can dim the charm of this event, which is a holiday tradition for many families.

This year, Vancouver Island dancer Ian Szkolak will be a guest artist in the show. Szkolak began training at age 10 with Nadia Veselova-Tencer and finished his studies at the University of Mannheim in Germany.

He now works with Ballet Étoile in Victoria and in this performance will be seen as the Cavalier and the Snow King.

Chloe Choroszewski is back for a seventh year performing in the Nutcracker with the Royal City Youth Ballet and this year can be seen as the Sugar Plum Fairy, the Snow Queen, and the Rose.

The New Westminster-based troupe was formed in 1989 following a successful production of Coppelia with young performers.

Organizers then saw a need to fill the gap between the dance studio and professional ballet, and have been proven right every year since as crowds have enjoyed their Nutcracker performances.

This evergreen favourite features lovely costumes and a graceful setting that only enhance the famous ballet, which is based on an old story of a girl, Clara, on the brink of womanhood, who receives a nutcracker in the shape of a handsome soldier on Christmas Eve. She falls asleep with her gift in her arms and many of the most famous moments of the ballet take place in her dreamland where she and her handsome soldier brought to life are entertained by various characters.

Tickets for this performance are specially priced for family entertainment. General admission is $24 per person, with a $74 rate for a family of four (two adults and two children).

First concert for Warmland singers a benefit LEXI BAINAS CITIZEN

The Warmland Singers will make their debut in a benefit concert for the CMS Food Bank Friday, Dec. 19 at 8 p.m. at Sylvan United Church in Mill Bay. They will be presenting a short program of classical choral music in a capella style.

The evening will include selections by Pierre de la Rue, Jeff Enns and Arvo Pärt, as well as a few holiday favourites.

This dynamic choral ensemble is comprised of 10 young adult musicians who live in the Cowichan Valley. Many of the singers were raised in the Valley, attended Frances Kelsey Secondary School and performed in the Cowichan Valley Music Festival as youngsters.

Several went on to obtain degrees in music and to perform professionally.

After missed opportunities against the Nanaimo Clippers last Wednesday night and the Langley Rivermen on Friday, the Cowichan Valley Capitals got back in the win column with a convincing 5-1 effort against the Spruce Kings in Prince George on Saturday.

The Caps fell to the Clippers by a 3-1 score at home last Wednesday.

After a scoreless opening frame, the Clippers got on the board first with a powerplay goal late in the second. They added to the lead just 37 seconds into the third period.

Kyle Horsman got the Caps within one with 93 seconds left to play, but the Clippers iced the win with an empty-netter with two seconds remaining.

Lane Michasiw had a strong outing in net, stopping 30 of the 32 shots he faced.

“I can’t really fault the effort, but I thought we looked a little bit fatigued,” head coach Bob Beatty said. “The effort was there, but we weren’t able to capitalize.”

On Friday, the Caps travelled to Langley for a rematch with the Rivermen, who they had defeated at home five days earlier. It wasn’t to be repeated as Langley prevailed 3-2.

Although the Caps built up a 2-0 lead on a powerplay goal by Darien Craighead and an even-strength marker by Luke Santerno, the Rivermen answered back with three straight goals. Former Cap Colton Kehler potted the game winner midway through the second period.

Matt Zentner started the game in net, and made 26 saves on 29 shots.

The Caps lost two valuable players in the win over Prince George. Gobeil suffered an injury early on, and Horsman was tossed for checking from behind. Gobeil wasn’t available for Tuesday night’s game in Victoria, while Horsman was sitting out the first match of a two-game suspension.

“They’re both centremen and obviously they’re a couple of our best players,” Beatty said. “It will certainly be a challenge [without them].”

Defenceman Ben Verrall remains out on a day-to-day basis as well. Affiliate Spencer Loverock has played four games in his absence.

After visiting the Grizzlies on Tuesday the Caps will play a home-and-home series against the Clippers this weekend, in Nanaimo on Friday and back home Saturday at 7 p.m.

Cowichan LMG came within one day of going a year without a loss in the Vancouver Island Soccer League.

Cowichan lost 2-0 to Saanich Fusion at Tyndall Park last Friday, 364 days after their last defeat in league play — against the same team on the same field.

“The team that’s got our number right now is Saanich Fusion,” Cowichan head coach Glen Martin admitted.

Saanich scored in the ninth minute and the 90th minute, with both teams playing some excellent soccer in between.

“Saanich Fusion defended well the whole game,” Martin said. “They’re the strongest team we’ve played this year by a lot. We didn’t play poorly; we played well. We were just chasing them the whole game.”

The match marked the Cowichan debut of the recently signed Keevan Webb, a Victoria native who played this fall for the Peninsula College Pirates in Port Angeles, Washington.

The loss dropped Cowichan’s record to 111-2 on the season, but the team remains well in front of the rest of Div. 1. Saanich is sec-

ond, eight points back of Cowichan, while Vic West and Nanaimo, who played to a 2-2 draw last weekend, sit nine and 11 points behind Cowichan, respectively. Cowichan also has a game in hand on both Saanich and Nanaimo.

With the exception of a 7-0 win over lastplace Castaways on Dec. 6, Cowichan hasn’t been at its best in recent weeks, Martin acknowledged.

“We’re limping across the finish line,” he said. “We need to get back together here and get this thing finished off. We’re still in good shape to try to stop the little slump we’re in.”

Following the winter break, Cowichan’s next league game will take place in Nanaimo on Jan. 17.

MINOR HOCKEY report

Christmas tournament season starts this weekend

T

he tournament season is upon us and there will be some excellent minor hockey to watch around the Valley during the holidays. All teams appreciate a good crowd watching and there will be great draws on all sorts of gift baskets and items.

Our peewee Tier 2 team is hosting their tourney at Fuller Lake Dec. 20-22.

The atom C2 and C3 teams are hosting their tourney at Fuller Lake Dec. 27 and 28.

Next up are our peewee C3 and C4 Dec. 29 and 30 at Fuller Lake.

The CVMHA is hosting a “Pay it Forward for Alzheimer’s” bantam C tournament, Jan. 2 and 3 also at Fuller lake Arena. Teams will also be filling up food hampers to replenish local food banks as a team competition, so bring along nonperishable food items to help fill the baskets if you are coming out to watch a game.

We are expecting a great turnout for this worthy cause.

The final BIG EVENT is our midget Tier 1 tournament on Jan. 2-4 at the Island Savings Centre.

Many of our other teams are travelling to tournaments over the holidays, including our peewee Tier 1 team; they’re off to Chilliwack. The novice D team is going to Victoria for a tourney prior to Christmas, and the bantam C3 Phantoms are in Parksville for a New Year’s tournament. The midget C1 team is playing in the Nick Collins Memorial Tournament at Kerry Park during the Christmas break, and the midget C4 team is in Nanaimo for a New Year’s tourney.

Our Bantam Tier 1 team won silver in Vernon this past weekend where they represented CVMHA very well.

We’re very proud of our teams that are helping out with the Salvation Army Kettle Drive this year, a great big thank-you to all who are participating.

Prime Time You can apply to serve on provincial seniors council B.C.’s Seniors Advocate Isobel Mackenzie is seeking applicants for a council of advisers on seniors’ issues.

The council, made up of 25-30 volunteer seniors from around the province, will represent diverse backgrounds, ages, geographical areas and cultures.

“I am seeking the voice of seniors from a wide range of communities and experiences,” said Mackenzie. “Their opinions matter in recommending change as we move forward.”

The selection committee is seeking representation from seniors all along the health care continuum from completely independent and active seniors to those requiring care, including the voices of seniors who speak for themselves through a proxy (family caregiver, spouse or child).

The council will bring forward issues and concerns from their communities and from their own experience. They will also review projects, reports, communication materials and recommendations developed by the office of the seniors advocate.

Selection criteria were developed in collaboration with the Council of Senior Citizens’ Organizations of B.C. (COSCO), and COSCO will make the final recommendations for the council member appointments.

COSCO is an umbrella organization made up of seniors’ organizations and individual members.

“COSCO represents seniors from every area in B.C.,” Mackenzie stated. “Their experience and perspective will help determine the most wide-ranging composition of the council.”

The council will meet four times per year, by phone or in person. Advisers are expected to be able to travel to the lower mainland of B.C., read material in English, and use a
