A man was taken to hospital with unspecified injuries after a fire in a Cowichan Bay trailer park last Saturday morning.

Cowichan Bay firefighters were summoned to the scene just before 8:30 a.m., and by the time they arrived, the trailer was fully engulfed in flames.

They managed, however, to limit the damage to nearby trailers and vehicles in the tightly packed park. “If it had been dry weather with wind, that would have been a real issue,� fire department captain Charlie Brown said. “As it was, it was damp and there was zero wind, so the flames shot straight up. It didn’t do any significant

damage to the other trailers, but it could have been different on a windy day.�

Fifteen firefighters were on scene with two engines and two tenders, their jobs made easier by the presence of hydrants in the park. It took about five minutes to extinguish the flames. As of Monday, the cause of the fire had not been determined.

Just shy of his 99th birthday, Bill Heil became a knight.

Already decorated many times for his service in the Second World War, in late November the Duncan man was inducted into the French Foreign Legion as a Chevalier, or Knight, something he was honoured to accept on behalf of all Canadians who served in the war. “It was something they wanted to do for the Canadian Army, for the Canadians who fought, and a lot of them died, in France,� he said.

Heil is one of nearly 500 Canadians receiving Legion of Honour medals as France celebrates the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in 1945.

He spent four years in the army during and after the war, including more than a year in France after landing on Juno Beach in June 1944 as part of the D-Day invasion.

A “tank man,� Heil’s claim to fame before joining the Legion of Honour was his role in the

development of the Kangaroo, an armoured personnel carrier created from converted tanks.

The inspiration for the Kangaroo came shortly after D-Day. While waiting for tanks to come across the English Channel from England, Heil was on grave-digging duty. “I stood there on the battlefield and a guy from the Regina Rifles ran across the open field, and the Germans got him,� Heil recalled. “He had so many bullets in him, you couldn’t count them.�

That gave Heil the idea of using tanks to carry troops, a concept that eventually made its way to the leaders of the Canadian forces. They had a team of eight men — four mechanics, two welders and two electricians — figure out how to convert a tank into a troop carrier. Eventually, they took turrets off about 50 tanks, and were able to carry eight to 10 infantry men in each tank.

Initially, Heil recalled, the soldiers weren’t keen on climbing aboard.

It’s time for the Valley folks to hit the water in annual New Year’s Day polar bear swims.

Starting at the south end, the second annual Shawnigan Shiver takes place Thursday at Government Wharf Park with registration starting at 11 a.m. and stalwarts taking the plunge at noon.

A $5 entry fee includes a hat, a hot drink, a cookie and fun plus a Shiver button for swimmers that get wet to their waists.

••• At Cowichan Bay’s Hecate Park, there’s always a good crowd ready for hijinks.

The sign-in is at 10:30 a.m. with “swimmers” running down the ramp into the icy ocean at 11 a.m.

••• A little later, at noon, keen, polar bear swim enthusiasts take to the waters at Maple Bay, beside the Rowing Club, urged on by the skirl of the bagpipes.

This event usually draws lots of folks in costume so if you’ve got something fun to wear, give it a try.

••• The polar bears will be hitting the water in Crofton at noon.

The brave and the bold are invited to take to the ocean at the boat launch beside the ferry terminal at the end of Chaplin Street.

••• Finally, travelling north, Ladysmith’s polar bear swim is scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Transfer Beach Park, just off the Trans Canada Highway.

Missing decorations dropped off at Citizen ANDREA RONDEAU CITIZEN

Are you missing a reindeer and a polar bear from your Christmas display? The Citizen may have them.

On Dec. 17 the Citizen printed a letter from Karen Kahl of North Cowichan explaining that a pink cat sculpture had been stolen from the Christmas display in her front yard.

She asked for the cat’s return, and offered that someone could drop it off at the Citizen offices no questions asked.

The cat was returned to the Citizen offices last week, and Kahl is thrilled to get her cat back, though it was a little worse for wear.

The culprit left a note with the items, explaining that they were intoxicated at the time of the crime and not thinking clearly. The alcohol consumption also meant that when the thief went to return the items, he or she did not remember which house things had been taken from.

Which explains why the Citizen is now also in possession of reindeer and polar bear sculptures returned by the same person.

If you believe these items are yours, please come by the Citizen, preferably with some proof of ownership (a photo would be good), and pick them up. The Citizen offices are at 251 Jubilee St. in Duncan.

RCMP probing Ladysmith school stabbing

A police investigation is underway into the stabbing of a student at Ladysmith Secondary School on Friday, Dec. 19.

According to Sgt. Dave Herman, a spokesman for the Ladysmith RCMP, at approximately 11:55 a.m. that day, school principal Steve Thompson reported that a student suffered a puncture wound to his back while walking through the school’s halls.

Herman said the student was unaware that he had been stabbed, but experienced a sharp pain in his back on his way to a bathroom in the school. When he turned around to determine the cause of the pain in the crowded hallway, he couldn’t identify who was responsible.

Herman said the student went to the school’s office where a staff member looked at the wound, which was determined to be approximately five millimetres wide by four millimetres deep. The student was taken to Ladysmith Community Health Centre and was released after medical staff closed the wound with one suture. Herman said police are seeking the assistance of the public in the matter and are asking that anyone with information to contact the Ladysmith RCMP. The victim’s mother (name withheld) said Monday that her son is “doing fine,” and recovering from his wound.

But she is concerned that the wound just missed his spine and kidneys and could have been more serious. The mother said what concerns her most is that her son, who is in Grade 12, has no idea as to who stabbed him or whether it was a targeted or random incident.

She said as a result, her son is “horrified” to go back to school in the new year. She has also raised concerns that the school was not immediately locked down to prevent further injuries and to help identity

the culprit. “The community needs to know what’s going on,” she said.

Herman said that the students were being dismissed at noon on Friday for Christmas break, so most students had already left the school by the time the incident was reported to the RCMP. The teen’s mother said the school was full of students for some time after the incident. Thompson, the school’s principal, was not available for comment Monday. Shauna DeBodt, a spokeswoman for the Nanaimo-Ladysmith school district, said the district is following the RCMP’s protocols in the investigation.

Asked why this was happening at all instead of just going to another five-year agreement, Devana said, “We could go five years but we’re talking about a secure water supply for Crofton.

Another seemingly derelict boat appeared on the shoreline in the Cowichan Bay estuary last week.

“It’s a little one, like the ones my guys drag out all the time and tie up at the government dock,” said Brian Thacker

of Pacific Industrial & Marine, who, from his location at the Westcan Terminal, has a front row seat on Cowichan Bay’s continuing problem of having derelicts abandoned in the area.

“We’re not sure how this one got there; it must have blown in there over the weekend,” he said.

A presentation by spokesperson Carol Ann Rolls and the passionate testimonials by several directors had the Cowichan Valley Regional District easily agreeing to increase funding to keep the Community Policing programs in the Cowichan Valley running.

“Adequate funding is the key,” Rolls told the board. “We are the eyes and ears of the police.”

Rolls has been involved in Community Policing in the Valley for more than 20 years. During her tenure the program has won numerous provincial kudos, she said, as well as being held up as a model for best practices for other jurisdictions.

There are 50 active volunteers involved in the programs.

But now, Rolls said, demand for programs is colliding with increased expenses and a budget that has remained stagnant since 2005.

This leaves volunteers struggling to be fundraisers, which is not what they signed up for. They should be doing crime prevention, Rolls said, “not selling lottery tickets.”

“Volunteers get burnt out fundraising, sometimes they lose interest and resign,” she said.

Some of the programs run by Community Policing include speed watch, shoplifting prevention, handing out pedestrian reflectors so people don’t get hit by vehicles, citizens on patrol, child find, block watch and crime prevention education.

The group has seen increases in rent, fuel

and insurance.

Any shortfalls are made up with fundraising efforts, which, this year, she said, would have to reach $32,000.

“Thirty-two thousand dollars is not attainable for this year,” Rolls said.

“Some tough decisions are going to have to be made,” she advised the board, if the asked-for increase in funding wasn’t approved. The Chemainus Community Policing office is already likely going to be closed, she said, but any savings won’t be enough to cover all the bills.

The amount given by the CVRD partners involved in Community Policing is $100,000 per year. The partners are Area D, the City of Duncan and the Municipality of North Cowichan.

A letter from the Municipality of North Cowichan received last Wednesday night advised that their council was in favour of increasing the budget to $116,000 per year, while also changing the bylaw to allow for yearly incremental increases.

The other funding partners were on board.

“Thank you for all you do in our communities,” said Area D Director Lori Iannidinardo.

“We’ve seen a really tremendous change” both in perception of safety and actually safety in Duncan, Mayor Phil Kent said, and it has made a big difference to the liveability of the community.

The board unanimously supported increasing the funding allotment by the maximum allowable amount, 24.9 per cent, and changing the bylaw to allow for yearly adjustments.

When it saved so many of them, it caught on. They were happy to crawl in. It took a lot of guts from the tank drivers.”

Once the Kangaroos got rolling, they “pulverized” the enemy forces.

“It changed the face of the war,” Heil said.

Heil’s specific job in the tank corps was to operate a “recovery tank,” rolling at the tail end of a group of 50, watching out for broken vehicles.

“My job was to fix it or tow it,” he said. “We were well-equipped to overhaul them and do whatever had to be done. If I wasn’t on the battlefield dodging bullets, I was fixing something.”

Just prior to D-Day, while training in the north of England, Heil was stung by an insect, which caused his arm to swell up “like a balloon,” so he missed the initial landing. He was sent over soon after, the fighting was still going on.

“As soon as they figured I could move, I landed on Juno Beach, too.”

Heil spent two and a half years on the battlefield, remaining

with the Kangaroos until the end of the war. When the war ended, the army’s leaders were anxious to send everyone home, but a handful of Canadians had to stay, including Heil, who remained overseas for another year, fixing equipment that the army wanted to sell to European governments rather than shipping it home.

Heil enlisted in Vancouver in January of 1942, having moved to Duncan from the prairies because of an eye problem that the damp climate would be good for. He thought, when he was drafted, that they eye issue would keep him out of the army. Such was obviously not the case.

“I was pretty skookum then,” he said. “They looked me over and said, ‘you’re in.’”

He eventually went to Kingston, where the Lake Ontario air continued to help his eye. He did well enough in training there that he was sent to London, Ont. for heavy armour training, where he learned to handle a Sherman tank under top American instructors.

“I know where every nut and bolt is on them,” he said.

That training made him a top commodity.

“When we were through with those guys [the instructors], we were sure in demand on the battlefield,” Heil recalled.

“When I first got to France, I was a buck private, and that’s all I wanted to be,” he said.

Heil earned the respect of an officer, who soon afterward, had him promoted to corporal, despite Heil’s objections. Then he had him

promoted to sergeant.

Missing the initial D-Day landings wasn’t the only time that Heil may have cheated death. He remembers another night when it was 30 below, and he and a colleague took shelter in a farmhouse after fixing a tank, but didn’t have any weapons. They heard boots coming up the stairs, and momen-

tarily, were being held at gunpoint by three German soldiers with no way to escape. Fortunately, the Germans decided they weren’t worth the trouble.

“They looked at us and saw that we had no weapons and thought that we were pretty small pickings,” Heil said.

The captors then asked where the rest of the outfit was.

“As soon as they heard there was a bigger target down the street, they took off,” he said. “It still amazes me.”

Once the Germans were out of the room, Heil’s companion produced a knife he was hiding in his boot and ran down the stairs, tackling them before they could reach the camp.

As shocking as that story may sound, it wasn’t that unusual during the war.

“On the battlefield, those things happened every hour, every minute,” Heil said. “You were scraping and dodging and doing what you can.”

The French Legion of Honour was created by Napoleon in 1802 and has been awarded to fewer than 95,000 individuals in that time. Heil doesn’t see in as an individual award, however.

“It’s not just an honour for me,” he said. “It’s for the Canadian army.”

Community Policing funds keep the lights on hen Carol Ann Rolls came to the Cowichan Valley Regional District Board meeting this month she looked tired.

The longtime backbone of Cowichan Community Policing seemed almost resigned as she asked the board to increase funding to the group, which has not seen a financial raise since 2005.

The years of having to organize and hold fundraising events seemed etched on her demeanour as she described the problem of losing volunteers who had joined to do crime prevention work, but whose duties had

increasingly fallen into the realm of selling lottery tickets to try to keep the doors open instead.

It’s easy to understand why someone who has signed up to do Citizens on Patrol or Speedwatch might not want to have to instead carry the burden of bringing in tens of thousands of dollars for core operational funds.

We were very pleased to see the board unanimously, and with no foot-dragging, grant Rolls’s request. Community Policing serves a very important function in Cowichan’s communities.

saves the RCMP time and dollars that can be put towards apprehending the area’s lawbreakers.

It also helps residents to buy into the idea that they can help to keep their own communities safe. Secure, happy communities are a collective responsibility, not just something imposed by a paid police force.

But the funding and fundraising struggles described by Rolls are all too familiar and not limited to Community Policing.

Many other organizations and societies in Cowichan, and indeed, around the province and the country, are struggling to

secure their futures as expenses increase and previous funding sources dry up.

Many of these organizations have also had a lot of responsibility downloaded onto them as provincial and federal governments make draconian cuts to programs and services, particularly for the poor and needy, and give tax breaks to those who don’t really need it.

Our local governments have also taken on the funding burden as these organizations turn to them for money.

Responsibility needs to be sent back up the food chain.

Vandalism illustrated need for more policing Vandalism of the costly Kinsol Trestle illustrates to me the need for more policing. They can’t be everywhere of course, but criminals tend to repeat acts they can get away with, and some vandals will go on to assault — it’s the same exploitative mentality.

It’s good that there was cellular coverage at the trestle location, for the camera. The combination of pressure from NIMBYs and Telus’ inabilities leaves many gaps. You should ask why there is no longer signal — a problem is dropping of signal formats by cellular service providers. Note too that video is high bandwidth which is costly, unless compres-

sion can provide enough information for the purpose.

My concern is not the present trestle, which I think is a phony waste of funds that should have been spent on policing. Rather I want a civil society in which individuals are respected — vandals don’t, and earned property is protected.

of our children and families to toxic pollutants that cause cancer, asthma and other diseases.

Wood smoke has already been identified as the chief source of air pollution in the Valley.

To put it in terms relating to Wolfgang Lehwalds’s letter, burning two cords of seasoned wood in an appliance is the equivalent of driving 13,000 cars 20 kilometres each (source: Washington State Dept of Ecology). Burning piles outdoors is 100 times worse than that. One person’s annual habit could roughly be offset by blocking the Trans Canada Highway for that day.

Tonight I am looking at the schedule offered on bus route 6, Chemainus-Crofton.

I am dismayed at what I find.

Is this system operated for the convenience of the transit system or for the public?

A transit system worthy of the name keeps a regular schedule between communities during business hours, 6 a.m.-12 p.m., hourly at a minimum.

Anyone who wants to go swimming in the evening or come over for dinner in Chemainus has to drive or find someone to do it.

Forget the big buses except where the rush hour is... big.

Put small cars, mini vans on the road. Whatever needs be done.

People won’t use the system if it is not regular and frequent, day-to-day. Transit is the clock that regulates social life.

When it stops, people stay home instead of driving at night, cheap gas or not.

The muni doesn’t have too many choices; it’s either that or keep rolling up the sidewalks at 5 p.m.

People won’t use it until it’s in place.

This would, in my opinion greatly stimulate the local economy and joie de vivre.

A good New Year to all, in our lovely Cowichan Valley.

Wood heating a source of security In regards to the recent letter written by the Fogel family concerning heating one’s home by wood heat. I couldn’t agree more about having the security of heat, as well as cooking, drying or whatever other means of utilizing wood fibre as an energy source instead of the sole reliance on electricity or gas — two sources that will let you down during storms or looming catastrophes that could hit us at any time, or so we are constantly being warned of.

Since high school, and further on into my university education, we learned in biology about the all-important carbon cycle, so let me recap it here in a nutshell: sun’s energy allows growth of plants, plants store carbon and then die or rot, and carbon is released back to the environment and regrowth happens. When we burn wood, we release the sun’s stored energy and reap the byproduct as heat. A clean burning fireplace will provide energy far more efficiently, and with lower environmental impact than any

other fuel option. Other fuel options include oil, gas and coal, and when these sources are used, a vast amount of stored energy is released very quickly relative to fibre use, and along with it comes a heavy dose of carbon dioxide, hence our concern when it comes to climate change. Burning wood essentially is on par with what a naturally left forest would release as it dies and rots, and wood fire doesn’t contribute to global warming and has a significantly reduced level of greenhouse gas emissions.

When I lived on the Gulf Islands, we often went into days that we could count on one hand that we had no electricity due to storms, hence pretty much everyone had a source of heat that used wood fibre. Those that suffered during the ice storm that hit Montreal in 1998 had no other source of heat, but those that had fireplaces and wood stoves were popular households for many of their neighbours! We in the Cowichan Valley are not far from the Gulf Islanders in number of days each year without power, as well as the duration of each power

outage during these storms.

Those of us, and I mean the silent majority of Cowichan Valley residents that live outside of Duncan and have wood heat as an option, have probably done things this way for several years, and feel that much more connected with our environment. Telling them to get off wood heat and rely solely on the corporate options of electricity or gas, is to me, a foolhardy option. I’d like not to put all my eggs in one basket.

If you buy property next to a farm, airport or race track, know that that operation has already been going on before you decided to move in next door and wanted to shut it down because it bothers you. Moving in to rural and suburban parts of the Cowichan Valley will probably bring you in contact with wood smoke. This is due to clearing up after downed branches and debris after a storm, or a house being heated by wood. It’s the smell of good living and the normal continuation of the carbon cycle.

I

n the Pacific Northwest, the air we breathe is usually much cleaner compared to some parts of the world, but even here air quality can be an issue.

Traffic, industry, open and backyard burning, home and commercial heating — each of these activities produces a long list of pollutants, often the same ones. Under certain weather conditions, or if you live close to a source, you may have higher exposure to pollution than others.

In Canada, most of the focus is on managing sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), ground-level ozone (O3), and particulate matter (PM). Even though there are many more pollutants of concern, many contribute to or are part of what makes up PM, and monitoring fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a good overall indicator.

A few months ago, an emissions inventory was completed for the Cowichan Valley Regional District, which estimates how much SOx, NOx, CO and PM2.5 are produced by the most common sources • The pulp and paper industry produ-

Industry is the biggest producer of SOX in the CVRD. [CITIZEN FILE] ces 99 per cent of the SOx in the CVRD, 27 per cent of the NOx, 10 per cent of CO, and 17 per cent of PM2.5.

• Heating and open burning emit nine per cent of the NOx, 30 per cent of CO, and 77 per cent of PM2.5.

• Traffic, including on and off road vehicles, aircraft and marine vessels, puts out 64 per cent of NOx, almost 70 per cent of CO, but only six per cent of PM2.5.

It is a complex mix — different sources are responsible for varying amounts of each pollutant — but looking at measured levels in comparison to guidelines helps identify priorities for air quality management.

It is no surprise that the pulp and paper industry emits virtually all of the SOx in the CVRD, as there are no other significant sources in the region. Sulphur dioxide (SO2) is a harmful component of SOx, and data for 2011-2013 (29,000 hours) at the Crofton Escarpment station show that 99.9 per cent of the time, SO2 levels fall with the “good” category established by Vancouver Island Health Authority. Only three hours were in the “unhealthy for sensitive groups”

category.

Measured levels of NOx, CO, and O3 in the CVRD are always well below provincial and federal guidelines.

PM2.5 levels in the CVRD are more concerning. The provincial 24-hour guideline of 25 micrograms/cubic metre is typically exceeded every year in the fall and winter in the Duncan area. The past four heating seasons (October – February) have seen at least 10 days above the guideline, with a high of 23 days in 2011-2012. For this heating season, four days have been higher than the guideline so far. Since 2010, only one day outside of the heating season — Aug. 5, 2010, has been above the guideline due to regional wildfires. Given that backyard burning and wood heating produce 77 per cent of the PM2.5 in the CVRD, and that most of the emissions are close to homes and people, managing these sources can make a big difference in local air quality.

Rumplestiltskin was sold out three days before its six-day run was over.

And no wonder.

The Shawnigan Players’ holiday pantomime is always lots of fun and this year’s production was totally hilarious.

No panto is complete without its dame (a blowsy woman played by a man) and in Rumplestiltskin Alex Gallacher filled the role of Philippa Bucket (pronounced Bouquet) with every inch of his body working.

Grant Mellemstrand was the evil Rumplestiltskin and his entrance and opening song combined to produce a thrillingly chilling atmosphere as he told the heroine, Marigold (Kalenta Menu) that he would spin straw into gold but only in exchange for her first-born son.

Battling the flu and the injury bug and coming back from a week off, the Cowichan Valley Capitals rallied on Sunday afternoon to collect a valuable victory over the Powell River Kings.

Ryan Burton and Skylar Pacheco each had a goal and an assist on Sunday afternoon as the Caps returned from the B.C. Hockey League’s Christmas break with a 6-2 at the Island Savings Centre. Four players missed the game altogether, and several more were playing sick.

“It was a really good effort,” head coach Bob Beatty said. “We’re short-staffed. We’ve got a flu bug going through the team. And it’s kind of odd, having everybody apart for a week. It was definitely a gutsy effort.”

Burton scored the opening goal midway through the first period and set up Pacheco’s goal, the Caps’ sixth, late in the second.

The Caps carried a 1-0 lead into the second period, and piled onto it with a shorthanded effort from captain Kyle Horsman, a powerplay goal by Jesse Neher, and an even-strength marker by Sean Harrison to go up 4-0.

“It’s always nice to play with a lead,” Beatty said. “They have a bit more confidence.”

The Kings finally solved Cowichan netminder Lane Michasiw with a powerplay goal of their own. The Caps weren’t done scoring for that period yet, as Luke Santerno and Pacheco added on to the deluge. The Kings had the only goal of the third frame.

Jacob Switzer finished the game with two assists, while Michasiw was brilliant, making 39 saves on 41 shots.

“He’s had some really strong games for us,” Beatty said. “He’s playing well, making key saves at key times.”

The win was the Caps’ 12th of the season, giving them 26 points, still 10 back of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs for the last Island Division playoff spot. The Bulldogs have five games in hand on the Caps.

Five gold medals highlighted the Cowichan Valley Wrestling Club’s impressive results at the Cougar Invitational meet held at Cowichan Secondary School on Dec. 13.

Owen Ketch and Ethan Giles of Queen of Angels School won the junior boys 60kg and 90kg classes, respectively, Hannah Tuplin of Chemainus topped the junior girls 51kg division, and senior boys wrestlers Kayden Dorma of Frances Kelsey and Jeevan Sall of Cow High took gold in the 63kg and 130kg classes, respectively.

Those five were among 15 medallists for the club at the annual event.

Rounding out the CVWC contingent in the junior boys division were Talon Hird (Q of A), second in 38kg; Daniel Larson (Q of A), third in 45kg; Aidan Tuplin (Q of A), third in 60kg; Victor Unicume (Q of A), fourth in 60kg; and Rowan Gillard (Drinkwater) sixth in 54kg.

Joining Hannah Tuplin in the junior girls division were Sydney Hall (Q of A), second in 34kg; Jacqueline Wong-Bates (Q of A), second in 51kg; Sarah Calimbo (Cowichan), second in 54kg; Tayah Poole (Q of A), second in 69kg; Grace Rhone (Q of A), third in 34kg; Helena Ellis (Q of A), third in 54kg; Ebonie Elliott (Q of A), third in 60kg; Paige Kora (Q of A), fourth in 43kg; Stephanie Mould (Q of A), fourth in 51kg; Zoey Harkness (Q of A), fourth in 60kg; and Mikayla Brennan (Q of A), fifth in 47kg.

Besides Dorma and Sall in the senior boys division, Jacob Berry-McKechnie (Cowichan) finished third in the 63kg class, Adam Smith (Cowichan) placed fourth in 58kg, Blair Robertson (Cowichan) was fourth in 84kg, Damian McCuaig-Jones finished fifth in 60kg, and Marley Munro was fifth in 84kg.

Two Cowichan Secondary wrestlers represented the club in the senior girls ranks: Rayne Hankins, who placed second in 74kg, and Andrea Morris, who finished third in 51kg.

Queen of Angels placed first in the junior girls team standings and fourth in the junior boys team standings. Cow High finished second in the senior girls team standings and fourth in the senior boys team standings.

Shawnigan Lake School’s dominant run through their first season in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League continued earlier this month when the team won another four games over a weekend in Penticton.

Shawnigan won a pair of games against Pursuit of Excellence and two more against Okanagan Hockey Academy between Dec. 12 and 14.

The team started the weekend in perfect form as Merek Pipes made 20 saves in a 5-0 win over Pursuit of Excellence on Friday afternoon. Liam Kennedy scored twice, Devin Williamson had a goal and an assist, and Kyle Bell and Cody Friedman each had one . Shawnigan outshot Pursuit of Excellence 50-20 in the contest.

The rematch with Pursuit of Excellence the following morning wasn’t quite as lopsided, but Shawnigan still managed to prevail 3-1. Gavin Yee scored once and set up the other two goals, by Dominik Faustino and Triston Lebrun, while Cael Halvorsen made 21 saves.

On Saturday afternoon, Shawnigan downed Okanagan Hockey Academy 3-1. Faustino scored another two goals and Bell added one, while Pipes was back in net and stopped 23 shots.

The weekend wrapped up on Sunday with Shawnigan again

beating Okanagan Hockey Academy, this time by a 5-3 score.

Lebrun led the attack with a goal and two assists, Crumb scored once and added a helper, and Bell, Faustino and Jackson Doucet rounded out the offence.

Ethan Schovanek got the start in goal and made 25 saves.

Shawnigan’s record now sits at 16 wins and no losses on the season, the best record in the CSSHL’s Varsity Division. Doucet leads the team in scoring with 23 points on 12 goals and 11 assists, while two other players have 22 points each: Kennedy, with 12 goals and 10 assists, and Williamson, with five goals and 17 helpers. Pipes has six wins and a 1.17 goals-against average, Halvorsen has five wins and a 1.60 GAA, and Schovanek has five wins and a 1.80 GAA. The team will have two play weekends in January.

Another curious feature of its timekeeping was that city hall workers came to recognize its ability to double as a barometer: “Whenever the hands are a minute too soon or behind correct time, a change in the weather is bound to be approaching.

This theory has proved itself consistently.”

Originally, the clock was illuminated by electric lights all night long but with the arrival of the Great Depression a timing device was installed to turn them off at midnight.

For many years the clock was wound weekly by A.B. Whittaker who raised two sets of heavy weights with the aid of a large crank. The flooring of the “sounding room” was renovated in 1924 so as to allow the bell to be heard more clearly through the louvres.

The work of J. Smith and Sons, Midland Clockworks, Derby, the eight-day clock has suffered few failures other than those cited, once in the 1950s and again in 1991. In 1970 it received a thorough overhaul by jeweller George Stenmark, who had to use gallons of solvent to remove the dirt and grime which had accumulated over 40 years before he could readjust and synchronize the hands. At that time it was estimated that the venerable clock’s gears had been in operation for 500,000 hours. Winding the clock, which continues to labour on all these years later, is accomplished by turning a large and heavy crank handle for approximately six minutes to raise the huge metal weight that drives the pendulum in the main body of the timepiece.

The great cast-iron weight, noted the late newspaper publisher Andy Bigg in 1987, is suspended on a cable that extends from behind the mayor’s chair, which is considerably shorter than when it descended as far as the main floor or the basement.

This made the eight-day clock a seven-day clock. Wind-up time is every Thursday. “If I missed winding the clock on Thursday morning,” Al Hudson, electrician for the City of Duncan Works Department whose duties for many years included being “Keeper of the Clock,” told Bigg, “the clock would stop at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Friday morning and there would be quite a few phone calls from residents complaining about the fact. So I’m pretty careful to keep everything on schedule.”

He described the clock as “a very precise and tricky piece of machinery, but basically it is of relatively simple construction.

The main works are encased in glass and the only bother we have is to clear away the flies which gather on the warm casing in cold weather.”

He’d once been stymied by the fact that the clock was losing a few minutes a day. It took his sitting for hours, studying the movements of the works, to finally notice that one of the hands was lightly rubbing against the clock face: “The fractional rub of that one hand on the face affected the entire sequence of the movement,” he recalled in awe.

When visitors asked to see the clock close-up, he warned them not to expect an elevator ride or an ascent by an ordinary flight of stairs to the top of the tower: “There is very little space to move and part of the ascent is by two very narrow ladders... So, if you don’t like climbing ladders, just admire our City Hall clock from street level.” www.twpaterson.com
