Chinese restaurant damaged in blaze KEVIN ROTHBAUER CITIZEN

The quick work of volunteer firefighters is being praised for putting out a blaze in a Chemainus restaurant on Sunday before it could spread to neighbouring businesses on a tightly packed commercial block.

Flames erupted in the residence above the Ding Ho Restaurant on Oak Street around 1 p.m., but thanks to the firefighters, the structures on both sides were unaffected by either fire or smoke damage.

“They put it out in pretty short order,” said Susan Martin, who

operates the Book Nook café on the west side of the restaurant. “It didn’t have time to settle into the timbers. It was amazing.”

Chemainus volunteer firefighters were joined by crews summoned from nearby Ladysmith and Crofton to battle the flames.

Drew Smith of Impulse Elec-

tronics, on the other side of the restaurant, had been trained to fight fires in the military, but when he responded with an industrial-strength fire extinguisher, he could see immediately that it was beyond his control.

Like the restaurant owners, Smith lives above his business,

and his bedroom is located next to where the fire appeared to have started, but his unit sustained no damage.

Unconfirmed reports suggested the fire was caused by a heater in a bedroom. There was no word as of Tuesday when the long-running restaurant might re-open.

The second air quality advisory in a month has been issued by the provincial Ministry of Environment and Island Health, warning those with underlying medical conditions to stay indoors and avoid wood smoke.

The advisory is in effect for the Cowichan Valley for the next three days, within 15 kilometres of Duncan City Hall, and open burning restrictions have also been put in place.

High concentrations of fine particulates are expected to continue until weather conditions change, the bulletin said. Levels as of 8 a.m. Tuesday morning were 32 micrograms per cubic metre, well exceeding the provincial objective of 25.

“Persons with chronic underlying medical conditions should postpone strenuous exercise until the advisory is lifted,” said Earle Plain, an air quality meteorologist with the Ministry of Environment.

“Staying indoors and in air conditioned spaces helps to reduce fine particulate exposure. Exposure is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have diabetes, and lung or heart disease.

People are asked to avoid the use of wood stoves and fireplaces unless necessary, and avoid backyard burning where a bylaw doesn’t exist. People are also asked to avoid idling their vehicles.

Wood smoke, commercial activities, industry and vehicles are contributors to the current poor air quality.

Twelve employees at the Cowichan News Leader Pictorial newspaper in Duncan took to the picket lines on Monday in a dispute over proposed changes to their pay structure.

The strike is about blocking the implementation of a two-tier wage system by management, said Unifor Local 2000 representative Peter McQuade.

Right now, employees’ wages increase over time through a classification system. Management is trying to get rid of the top wage classifications for any new employees coming in, McQuade said.

“They want to take all the highest pay rates and classifications and eliminate them, so that any future employees never make that amount of money,” he said.

Employees voted 100 per cent in favour of strike action.

McQuade said it was possible the paper would not be able to put out an edition for Wednesday, and the cancellation of the mid-week edition was confirmed Monday afternoon by advertisers. McQuade had no indication when the strike might be over.

“We might be in for a long dispute,” he said.

In spite of sub-zero temperatures on the picket line, “they’re in good spirits,” McQuade said. “At least the sun is shining.”

Calls to the News Leader Pictorial’s editor and publisher were not returned by press time, but Randy Blair of Black Press told Chek News that unionized employees at the paper enjoy “a very good wage rate for this market area,” and that it’s important for the company to stay competitive.

“I was pretty excited about the results,” said Area F director Ian Morrison.

Cowichan Lake South/Skutz Falls and Youbou/Meade Creek were the last two areas in the Cowichan Valley Regional District that did not have an agreement to contribute to the pool facility, so residents were paying a higher individual rate to use the centre.

On Nov. 15 referenda in both areas were successful and the twotier system will now be dropped. In Area F the vote was 125 in favour to 85 opposed, while in area I the numbers were 104 in favour to 84 opposed.

Klaus Kuhn said he’d heard from his constituents that a significant number of them were interested in gaining equal access to the pool.

“I kind of expected the votes the way they came out,” he said.

Morrison said he thinks the access to the pool is important for the community because it’s part of pursuing a healthy lifestyle.

“While we have a few very brave souls that use the lake early and late in the season, for the most part access to the Aquatic Centre will bring greater health and wellness benefits,” he said.

“There are quite a few people that go, especially in the winter,” Kuhn agreed.

Duncan’s honourees share a birthplace KEVIN ROTHBAUER CITIZEN

The three individuals honoured

by Duncan City council at Monday night’s annual award ceremony have more than one thing in common.

All three share a deep appreciation for the Cowichan Valley and a dedication to its residents.

By sheer coincidence, all three — Scroll of Honour recipient Jack Faber, Perpetual Sportsmanship Trophy recipient Louise Hamilton, and Perpetual Arts Trophy recipient Nick Versteeg — were also born in the Netherlands and eventually called the Valley home.

Faber, who turned 81 in July, was recognized for his extensive commitment as a volunteer, specifically for his 15 years with the Red Cross Health Equipment Loan Program Depot in Duncan.

After he retired from his job as a millwright at Buckerfield’s Mill, Faber found his new calling with the HELP program, repairing and maintaining wheelchairs, walkers and other medical equipment.

“He always loved fixing things,” Faber’s wife, Eileen said. “No matter what I broke around the house, I never worried because he could fix it.”

Both Jack and Eileen went above and beyond their volunteer positions, Coun. Sharon Jackson noted, presenting the award.

“Jack has always gone the extra mile when it comes to helping the vulnerable residents of Duncan,” she said. “The Duncan HELP Depot, currently located on York Road, is mostly operated by volunteers. Because of this, the Depot is not able to offer delivery and pickup services for clients, most of whom are seniors. Hand-in-hand with his wife, Eileen, Jack took up the initiative to deliver the equipment to the clients’ houses.”

The Perpetual Sportsmanship Trophy was awarded posthumously to Hamilton, a longtime swimming teacher in the Valley, who died in July from complications from a stroke she suffered last March.

Born Louise Heppenstrydt, she came to Canada in 1954, living most of the rest of her life in the Cowichan Valley. Hamilton taught thousands of children and adults to swim at locations from Brentwood College School to Maple Bay Beach and Cowichan Lake, and was instrumental in getting the Aquannis Centre, the predecessor to today’s Cowichan Aquatic Centre, built.

She was honoured throughout her life with a range of awards from the Red Cross and the Government of Canada. When she retired, Hamilton was the oldest certified active lifeguard in Canada.

Her daughter, Nancy Hamilton, accepted the award on Monday.

“We are really honoured,” she said. “I know mom would have been honoured. She loved this community and the people in it.”

water right up until she died.

“After the stroke, she was back at it,” Nancy recalled. “She decided to teach herself how to walk and swim again. She persevered.”

Versteeg moved to Canada in 1976 where he attended film school in Vancouver. He went on to produce and direct documentaries for A&E, the History Channel, the Discovery Channel, CTV, CBC, Global and the Food Network, winning four Leo Awards and being twice nominated for Gemini Awards. His documentaries Island

1943 and their discovery in 2014.

He is now working on the story of the Malahat highway. The region continues to inspire him.

“I reached retirement age in July, but I will never retire,” he said.

“This is a great place to work.”

Aquatic Centre buy-in has lessons to teach us ast week we talked about how disappointed we were over the outcome of nine referenda on the Cowichan Sportsplex that saw funding to the important regional facility take a big hit.

This week we’d like to take a look at some good news from two other referenda that were also held on Nov. 15.

Polls in areas F and I, Cowichan Lake South/Skutz Falls and Youbou/Meade Creek, came out in favour of making a financial contribution to the Cowichan Aquatic Centre.

This was historically a monument to the lack of regional cooperation in Cowichan.

The old pool was at the end of its life, and it was clear a new one would have to be built.

Having such facilities is important not only for the health and recreation of residents, but to attract new business and industry to the area.

But initially a lot of Valley areas claimed they’d never use it and wouldn’t pay, leaving the Municipality of North Cowichan,

the City of Duncan and Cowichan Tribes holding the financial bag. Boy, did the shouting start when it was determined that those who weren’t paying on their taxes were going to have to pay more to go for a swim or take a class.

Gradually, to our credit as a Cowichan community, agreements have been reached that have phased out the two different prices, and now, we can only hope it will all be but a bad memory.

There remains some discontent about the amounts some areas are paying, but those are details

that can be renegotiated. It’s a huge, and positive, step just to get everyone to agree to go in as a region.

It’s taken years for the Cowichan Aquatic Centre question to finally reach a resolution. Hopefully we can learn the lessons the whole process can teach us about working together.

We can only hope that the next regionally proposed project isn’t so much like pulling teeth, though what’s happened to the Sportsplex seems to bode ill.

We are made up of small communities, but we’re one bigger community as well.

I for one would be pleased to offer some guidance to CVRD and North Cowichan council on how to maximize our public resources to reduce the burden on the taxpayer. Perhaps there are some other like-minded marketing people who would like to assist.

All this uproar about a simple cross. The men that the cross honours fought and died so that we could practice our religious beliefs. If you are not Christian, then perhaps the simple answer is just not to look. For the life of me, I can’t understand why so many people are so vehemently opposed to any mention of Christianity.

Years ago, a country was defined by their religious beliefs.

England, Canada and most European countries were defined as Christian. And part of Christianity is tolerance.

North of Toronto, there is a synagogue, a mosque and a Shinto temple within one block. There has never been any trouble there. They live and let live.

Let us Christians enjoy our beliefs. Let us keep the Christ in Christmas. We are not bothering anyone. I have to wonder why you seem to be so afraid of us.

We mean you no harm. If you wish to practice your religion, then feel free to do so. But do not throw years of tradition out the window simply because you are not Christian.

I have worshiped in non-Christian buildings under different symbols. I wanted to learn why certain traditions are practiced.

And I learned a lot. We all have one thing in common: God. And every single holy book has the same message. Love one another.

Try to remember that men lived and died in defending our right to worship where and when we wanted. The cross is a symbol of our thanks. And try to remember the message. Love one another.

Re: Sportsplex vote results bad for whole region Nov. 28 I have to agree with the editor on this one. Unfortunately the savings for the CVRD can now assist to pay the pay raise for the CVRD electoral directors and yes, stay tuned as the board of directors soon vote on their new pay raise. Call me cynical, but my train of thought does have a caboose here. Read on.

Island Savings gets their name on this building [the Cowichan community centre] for $100,000 per year according to the mayor and council. For this they get

their name plastered on the building and it must get hundreds/thousands of mentions per week in coffee shops, newspapers and homes across the Valley.

My point is, that when this contract comes up for renewal, we should look at putting a greater value on this marketing opportunity. It might be $250,000 per year, possibly more, but this could assist in offsetting future expenditures and possibly lower the tax burden to us who pay $65 per $100,000 of assessed property value.

So, wouldn’t it make sense to solicit another corporate entity to perhaps allow them to have their name on the Sportsplex for $150,000 per year and commit to a five or 10 year contract? How

Break the silence to help end the violence I was fortunate on Nov. 26 to have attended a powerful workshop on domestic violence facilitated by Cowichan Women Against Violence at the Duncan United Church. The workshop kicked off the 16 days of activism, and the purple lights campaign to help end domestic abuse.

I had originally only intended to stop by for a short time, but was compelled to remain for not only the entire four hours, but to stay later to speak to the organizers to ask what I could do to help. One of the key messages that resonated with me was a video presentation of a TED talk given by

And it is a responsibility of men in the community to learn how they have an obligation to stand up, be leaders, and to recognize and speak up about the issue of domestic violence that still plagues this, and other communities.

To paraphrase Martin Luther King — It is not the words of our enemies that hurt, but the silence of our friends.

And so I, as a father to a daughter, and a brother to sisters, am compelled to speak up, and to act.

A group of men also stood up at the meeting and offered to help to facilitate a grass roots, peer support group for men (young and old), who would like to learn about the issues, and to find out what they can do to help.

Individuals can be nice, but the overall atmosphere would certainly have inspired the writing genius of Rod Serling of The Twilight Zone. It’s coming, better act now. Again, your greatest power is at the till, no doubt. Until we fix things, that’s the reality.

So, you now know where you can fix things. You now know it’s up to you. We’ve been told this before. Have things changed? Answer: no. We have only ourselves to blame. The answer is really simple, but we love our crap.

How long will we be strolling the walkways of downtown Duncan in full light of day with views of the mountains that form our Valley in sight if we build five-storey buildings whenever proposed? I want my downtown core to be a pleasant place to visit, not a concrete jungle.

For these reasons I have not been able to embrace the Dekova proposal that was approved by a very slim majority of council members.

I like three-storey buildings, four storeys with underground parking I can lend support to, five storeys is a behemoth.

Cross one of many diverse landmarks My wife and I are in support of replacing the cross to its original position on Mount Tzouhalem.

We live in the shadow of this beautiful mountain and drive past the cross many times a week.

To us it is one of many definitive landmarks of the Cowichan Valley, especially where it is situated overlooking Providence Farm.

To us both it is important to retain this identifiable Cowichan Valley symbol as one of diversity not exclusion.

It fits right in with other diverse memories of our past such as the totems of the City of Duncan, the Hockey Stick at the Island Savings Centre, the memorial cairn on Mount Prevost, the Burma Cairn at Stoltz Pools, the statue of Confucius at the entrance of E.J. Hughes Place (E.J. Hughes himself a human landmark of our community for many years) and the cenotaph at the corner of Canada Avenue and Trunk Road.

All of these can be seen as relics of the past and in the case of three of them a memory of different faiths within our community. As memorials they serve those of us today to remember our past and celebrate our diversity of culture, faith and peoples who have and do live in our beautiful Valley.

City of Duncan needs a viaduct for traffic on the highway to bypass town The highways ministry did a survey in October 2005 about the possibility of a bypass for Duncan.

The possibility of a Duncan bypass was explored as part of this study and it was determined that the high costs

and impact to business and private owners outweigh the forecast travel benefits. A bypass such as the one in Nanaimo will never be built in the Cowichan Valley.

Instead, my suggestion is that a viaduct be built. This viaduct could be four lanes, starting just past Beverly Street heading south, and ending on the other side of the bridges crossing the Cowichan River before Boys Road.

Signs before the viaduct would state viaduct for through traffic and the highway there now for Duncan localities. This would immediately get rid of the bottleneck we currently now have. Viaducts are common in the United States, and construction costs of a viaduct would be quite reasonable.

New programs on track for Cowichan school district Portable donation by district in final stages The Cowichan Valley school district has been working towards donating a portable classroom to the Cowichan Green Community.

What was needed was to create an agreement for sale, put in place a timeline for the move and review ground remediation under and around the unit before completion of the sale.

Secretary Treasurer Bob Harper gave an update at the Nov. 5 board meeting.

“My understanding is that the Green Community is doing their final permit application with the municipality to be able to move that. It is ongoing,” he said.

Students get hands-on with Try a Trade program Assistant Superintendent Sheryl Koers reported on an initiative, Try a Trade, which is coming to fruition.

It’s going to happen at Cowichan Secondary where two teachers are

setting it up, she explained.

“They are extremely excited.

They are using the first term with their Introduction to Trades students to build the different stations and then in second term each of our Grade 7 classes will come to Cow High either for two full mornings or two full afternoons and they will go to the stations.

“They will have an opportunity to do some actual framing, to do some real drywalling, to do a bit of mudding, a bit of painting, install a sink, do some plumbing and also do some electrical work,” she said.

And with iPads integrated into the program they will be able to create short films about their projects.

“The two teachers at Cow High are extremely excited about it and we are too, to be able to offer that to our Grade 7s,” Koers said.

The Causeway (sloedam) Battle, Oct. 31 to Nov. 1, 1944, part 1 â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think that my experience of taking part in the Causeway Battle on Halloween night and November 1, 1944 in Holland is probably the most terrible CHRONICLES 40 hours I have T.W. Paterson ever spent...â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201D;the late Bill Powell, 1998 ill Powell: I joined the army on Nov. 27, 1941 at the Bay Street Armouries in Victoria. I went to Vernon for basic training for two months and then to Brandon, Man. for about six weeks for advanced artillery training.

I almost went overseas in 1942, but the Japanese were expanding their conquests over large parts of the Pacific. So instead of going overseas, as I was scheduled, I was sent to the West Coast to help repel a possible Japanese invasion. I found myself posted to the 9th Heavy Anti-Aircraft Battery at Patricia Bay, B.C. About October 1943 the 9th AA Battery was transferred to Prince Rupert, B.C. My wish was still to go overseas, so in May 1944 I had a chance to volunteer for the infantry. Overseas the artillery and others referred to the infantry as

strength was 15 or 16 men. A full platoon was supposed to consist of 33 men. Full strength for our Battalion was 817 men. So you can see that we were about half-strength. There was a great shortage of reinforcements.

Lt. Alec Keller was our platoon commanding officer. He was a great soldier. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d taken part in the Dieppe raid and was decorated in 1942 â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the Military Medal for bravery at Dieppe. In Holland, he also received the Military Cross. When I joined the platoon, he made me a platoon runner.

While there, the Second Front opened up. The Second Front was the Allied invasion of Western Europe, which was then occupied by German forces.

I think [because] I’d survived longer in the platoon than anyone else, except Al Morris. Also, as I’ve already pointed out, I was a terrible runner... One day Lt. Keller told me I was “steady.”

That was the only compliment I ever received in the army. Not long after this I heard he was promoted to captain; I never saw him again.

I won’t go into details about everyday life except to say it consisted of attacking the enemy, living in slit trenches when we came to a stop and dug in. It was a life where the main emotion was fear. Total exhaustion, most of the time. There were usually two men in a slit trench. At night we had what was called 50 per cent guard, which meant that all night long one man in a trench had to stand guard. Next morning the word would come down “Green,” which meant advance.

A week at the front felt more like a month.

So much of what I experienced has been “blotted out.” We had a really bad time at Loon Plage, near Dunkirk in France. It was a matter of battle after battle through Belgium until we found ourselves beside the Albert Canal near Antwerp. The Calgary Highlanders recommended Sgt. Clarence Crockett for the Victoria Cross for his part in the successful crossing of the Albert Canal. Instead, he received the Distinguished Conduct Medal.

Clarence Crockett was a great man.

This is supposed to be about the Causeway Battle, but first I must explain a few things. The Allies had advanced to a position along the whole front ready to mount a great offensive into Germany.

However, there was one problem: war supplies couldn’t be brought up to the front in large enough quantities or quickly enough.

Supply lines were taxed to the limit. I think it amounted to some 400 miles starting on the coast of France near Cherbourg.

A port had to be found near the front. That port was Antwerp.

Gen. Horrocks and the 2nd British Army had captured the city early in September. However, the Germans controlled the long inlet leading into the port (the Scheldt Estuary). On the north side they controlled the South Beveland Peninsula and on the south what was known as Breskens Pocket. In addition to this the enemy had the Scheldt Estuary mined. Until the Germans were driven out, the port with all its dock facilities (which had been captured intact by the Belgian White Brigade) couldn’t be used. The 2nd and 3rd Canadian Divisions were given the task of driving them out.

Friday vigil marks massacre anniversary Cowichan Women Against Violence Society is inviting everyone to remember, honour and take action at a vigil on Friday, Dec. 5 to mark one of the worst massacres in Canadian history.

“On Dec. 6, 1989, a man walked

into an engineering class at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal armed with a semi-automatic rifle. After separating the men from the women he stated that he hated feminists. He started shooting the women in the class, killing 14 young women, injuring another nine and four men.

At the end of his killing rampage,

he shot himself,” described Kendra Thomas of CWAV. Dec. 6 is now the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, and the Cowichan community is invited to Vancouver Island University’s Cowichan Campus at noon to remember the events of Dec. 6, honour the women who were

killed that day, and think about all of the women and children, especially those here in Cowichan, who have died as a result of gender-based violence.

The event will include speakers, a procession of roses, and a candlelight vigil.

Celtic Rhythm Dancers reimagine ‘Nutcracker’ The popular Celtic Rhythm Dancers are presenting a show entitled A Nutcrackin’ Christmas on Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Cowichan Theatre starting at 7 p.m.

“What if the Nutcracker story happened in 2014? What would it look like? What would the music be like? What would the main characters be like?”

That was the inspiration for the show given by Judy Hogg.

The Celtic Rhythm Dancers will share their ideas in a fun, lighthearted dance presentation.

The music is very 2014 and Hogg and her team promise that the costumes are “not quite” all tutus and toe shoes.

“I have written a small script to go with the dancing, adding in some of the up-to-date terms that young people would use and, of course, the main characters (Cat and Ritz and Cracker) all tweet and text.”

Making the old story new again is a fun concept and “the dancers are all having a blast getting ready for it,” Hogg said.

Ensemble sounds season on ‘pile’ of instruments The Banquo Folk Ensemble from Victoria is coming to Mill Bay’s Sylvan United Church Saturday, Dec. 6 to present a show at 7:30 p.m. entitled Welcome Yule!

“It’s festive music to celebrate the season: four voices and our usual big pile of instruments, including recorders, flute, cittern, bagpipes, fiddle, surpeti, mandolin, lots of percussion and a few new surprises,” Amy Reiswig said.

“We are quite a unique ensemble in that we perform seasonal folk music from the 12th century to the present day on a wide variety of instruments that you don’t often see together,” she said. “We take a truly folk approach, playing the gorgeous music of ages past on instruments that we think best serve the sound. It creates a warm, rich musical experience that transports listeners to a simpler time of sharing a wassail bowl around a Christmas fire.”

Music lovers will find this show a lovely warm-up for the annual visit to the Cowichan Theatre by Winter Harp the following week, Saturday, Dec. 13.

It’ll be a Blue(grass) Christmas as the Chemainus Opry returns Dec. 6.

The Mount Brenton Golf Club is hosting the event which will feature Bluegrass Fever and the Moon Riders in the clubhouse.

The Moon Riders specialize in classic country music, featuring guitar virtuoso Gord Bigham, lead vocals by Sharon Dudka, and upright bass with Blaine Bartleman.

Bluegrass Fever is always a hit with the crowd whenever they play as the banjo picker Barrie Hemmings, guitarist Bob Johns, upright bassist Guy Langlois and Steve Bastian on mandolin will step up with great old bluegrass favourites.

Along with superb music, these shows always provide plenty of humour so get your tickets early to make sure you don’t miss it.

Young Pianist Maya Weckesser is a Grade 6 member of the Bench Elementary School choir and is very excited about singing in the Cowichan Consort Orchestra’s production of ‘The Snowman’ this Saturday evening. She likes pop and classical. Maya hopes to play in the Grade 7 band class next year.

The Kerry Park Islanders and Nanaimo Buccaneers combined for an eight-goal explosion in the third period of last Saturday’s game at Kerry Park Arena.

Unfortunately, when the dust settled, the Isles ended up on the wrong side of a 6-5 final score.

The Isles led 2-1 going into the third frame after Nick Kean and Zack Smith sandwiched goals around a Nanaimo marker in the first period and the teams were scoreless in the second.

The Bucs pulled ahead early in the third with back-to-back goals, but the Isles scored three in a row — two by captain David Bittner and one by Smith on the

powerplay — to regain the lead.

Nanaimo scored three unanswered goals in the last seven and a half minutes to go back in front by one and hang on for the victory.

In addition to the two-goal performances by Bittner and Smith, Kean had a goal and an assist, and Ryan Paisley, Braedan Cross and Taylor Armbruster each had two assists. Ty Rennie got the start in goal and made 32 saves on 38 shots. The Isles fired 44 shots at the Nanaimo net.

The Isles will play their next four games at home, beginning this Saturday when they host the Westshore Wolves at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, they will host the Comox Valley Glacier Kings at 3 p.m.

A double-overtime goal by Darien Craighead on Saturday evening gave the Cowichan Valley Capitals a split in their two-game road trip to Powell River last weekend.

The Caps had lost 6-1 to the Kings on Friday, but salvaged the visit with the 3-2 win on Saturday.

“We finally got a win in Powell River, so that was good,” head coach Bob Beatty said. “I guess we’re satisfied with a split. Wins have been scarce and it’s tough to win in Powell River.”

The Caps trailed 3-0 before they finally got on the board at the 14:20 mark of the second period when defenceman Rylan Bechtel scored. They allowed two more goals before the middle frame was over and one more in the third.

Goalie Lane Michasiw allowed six goals as the Caps were outshot 43-28.

“We had a decent start to the game, but once we got down, I wouldn’t say we coasted, but we

didn’t have a really sharp performance,” Beatty said.

Craighead scored 37 seconds into the second overtime as the Caps edged the Kings on Saturday.

After a pair of powerplay goals, the Kings led 2-0 midway through the second, but rookie Sean Harrison got the Caps on the board with just over four minutes left to play. Kade Kehoe tied the score on a Cowichan powerplay just two minutes and 15 seconds into the third. The teams remained deadlocked through the end of regulation and five minutes of four-on-four overtime, setting up Craighead’s three-on-three heroics. Matthew Zentner made 37 saves on 40 shots over 65 minutes and 37 seconds of action.

Beatty saw a few things his team did better on Saturday than Friday.

“I think it was just a matter of containing their first line a bit better,” he said. “We were better in our defensive zone. I’ve got to hand it to our penalty killers; they did a tremendous job, and Matt Zentner had a real strong game in

net when they did get chances.”

The Caps have won three of their last four games to improve their record to seven wins, 19 losses and one overtime defeat. They will now embark on a stretch of the B.C. Hockey League season that will see them play nine games in just 16 days. That begins this weekend when they play the Victoria Grizzlies at home on Friday at 7:30 p.m., the Clippers in Nanaimo on Saturday, and the Langley Rivermen at home on Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Grizzlies sit fourth in the Island Division, and the Caps will have to unseat them to get into playoff position. Nanaimo leads the Island Division, while Langley is third in the Mainland Division.

“Obviously, Friday night is a huge game,” Beatty said. “Victoria has made a coaching change, so we’ll see what they have to bring, but they are still the team we need to catch first. Nanaimo is a good team, and we haven’t seen Langley, but we know they’re strong.”

The Duncan Christian School Chargers were named the Most Sportsmanlike Team at the single-A provincial girls volleyball championships in Kelowna last weekend.

The Chargers entered the tournament seeded ninth, and finished in 13th place, but still came away with some hardware in the form of the sportsmanship award.

DCS opened pool play on Thursday with a 25-18, 26-24 win over Fernie Secondary. In their next match, against West Point Grey Academy, the Chargers lost the first set 2514, and nearly came back to win the sec-

ond set before falling 25-23. They closed out with a hard-fought 25-11, 21-25, 15-13 loss to Cedars Christian of Prince George.

When the playoffs opened on Friday, the Chargers were swept 25-16, 25-17, 25-19 by White Rock Christian Academy, then lost 25-22, 21-25, 16-14 to Kelowna Christian in a close match that could have gone either way.

DCS ended the weekend on a high note, winning back-to-back matches on Friday.

First they swept Bulkley Valley Christian 25-12, 25-14. Then they won a rematch of their tournament opener against Fernie 28-26, 22-25, 25-18.
