Lefebure wins CVRD chair election ANDREA RONDEAU CITIZEN

It took two ballots and a first-ever question period for the Cowichan Valley Regional District directors to elect Jon Lefebure to the position of board chair Wednesday evening.

The board and the region are “facing big challenges and big opportunities,” Lefebure said.

“We have truly exciting potential on this new board.”

Lefebure, also the mayor of the Municipality of North Cowichan, was challenged by Area H Director Mary Marcotte and Area D Director Lori Iannidinardo. Area F Director Ian Morrison declined his nomination in favour of Marcotte.

Lefebure, in his address to the directors prior to the vote, said he is excited about the next four years with the board, which has many new faces following the elections on Nov. 15.

Enrolment below projected for schools LEXI BAINAS CITIZEN

School District 79 now has its enrolment figures for the year.

This year’s snapshot date was Oct. 17. The district had projected full time equivalent enrolment to be 7,373 students and they came in 70 students below that at 7,303.

“That’s FTE,” said schools superintendent Joe Rhodes. “That’s not head count. And there’s a whole variety of reasons why the two are different.

“Actually, we’re up about 17 students in elementary and down a little more than projected in secondary. But again, the FTE requirement at secondary is not reflective of numbers of people.”

At the moment the Cowichan Valley school district’s budget is not hurt by this drop.

“Because we’re in funding protection it doesn’t affect us immediately but over time it does impact our budget,” Rhodes said.

He also reported that there is some surplus money now to use for more teachers.

Kinsmen to make a splash Sunday on Timmy’s Telethon LEXI BAINAS CITIZEN

The Duncan Kinsmen Club is being recognized on Timmy’s Christmas Telethon this Sunday, for its effort to help the Lions Club out of a jam.

Back in the spring, Tatum Toporowski, the daughter of Kinsmen member Barry Toporowski, approached the Duncan Kinsmen Club to say that Camp Shawnigan’s pool was in such bad shape that the kids didn’t use it the previous year, according to Kinsmen president Greg Powers.

“She said they had an estimate that it was going to cost $40,000 to fix it and she wanted us to fundraise and take this thing on,” he said.

“Well, we had enough members in our crew that are good at that sort of thing so we said, wait a minute, let’s go out and look,” Powers said.

“We ended up fixing the pool for them. The problem ended up

In recognition, the Lions Club had the Kinsmen out for an open house in July as a thank-you and then they called Powers in November to ask if representatives from Duncan could film a segment for the upcoming telethon.

The time is right for the BC Conservatives said Dan Brooks, leader of the provincial party, as he stopped in the Cowichan Valley last week as part of an Island-wide tour.

People want an alternative to the Liberals and the NDP, he said, both of whom have stopped serving the people of the province, and the Conservatives offer the balance that people are looking for.

“We have huge potential,” he said of the province, and he believes his party is the one to lead B.C. into a prosperous future.

The BC Conservatives, not to be confused with the federal party, with whom they are not directly affiliated, cropped up in the run-up to the last provincial election in 2013.

The results were not what the party wanted, Brooks admitted, with no hopefuls taking seats, but times have changed.

The NDP have been in decline since that election, which they thought they would win, Brooks said, and are suffering an identity crisis.

“That identity crisis is going to continue to weaken them for the long term,” he said. “They’re split between whether they represent jobs or the environment, do they represent public sector workers or do they represent private sector employees?”

“The reason that BC Conservatives haven’t been successful to this date is because people have been voting for the lesser of two evils,” he said.

With the NDP a non-factor, he said, that problem no longer exists.

Brooks said his party is about grassroots democracy.

“I’m here to listen,” he said. “The Liberals have stopped listening to the people.”

The Liberals are beholden to big corporations, Brooks said, while the NDP is beholden to unions, and the public gets lost in the shuffle.

On Vancouver Island, Brooks said he’s hearing a lot of dissatisfaction with how BC Ferries is being run.

“It’s getting a little ridiculous,” he said.

“It’s really a tax gouge and it’s totally unacceptable, and it’s time to turf it,” he said.

People are ready for a common sense party, Brooks said, and that is the BC Conservatives.

They are not tied up in ideological struggles, like the one that led to the teachers’ strike in the fall, which Brooks attributes to the Liberals’ focus on trying to destroy the teachers’ union at all costs.

The BC Conservatives believe in striking a balance between resource development and the environment, he said.

They are also championing getting rid of the patronage appointments of which they say the Liberals are guilty.

“We don’t want to go to one extreme or the other,” Brooks said. “Choosing between the NDP and the Liberals isn’t a choice, it’s a punishment.

Two returning councillors, three brandnew councillors, and one councillor returning after a few years away from the table were sworn in on Wednesday afternoon along with Mayor Jon Lefebure as North Cowichan held its first meeting of the 201418 regime.

Re-elected representatives Al Siebring and Kate Marsh were joined by rookies Maeve Maguire, Rob Douglas and Joyce Behnsen, as well as Tom Walker, a former councillor and mayor who brings a wealth of experience back to council.

The councillors were all reminded of their great responsibility by Glen Ridgway, another former councillor and Queen’s Counsel, who handled the swearing-in ceremony.

“The people will remember your title, but they will remember and appreciate your record,” he said.

Lake Cowichan RCMP investigating break in to sheds Lake Cowichan RCMP would like to hear from anyone with information about a break and enter to two sheds.

Officers are investigating the B&E which took place at a residential property on Stevens Crescent in Lake Cowichan.

He also advised cooperation among council.

“I do urge council, in like with your principles, to work together,” he said. “It is by working together that we achieve results.”

In his address, Lefebure recalled the many major issues that the last council dealt with, including taxation for the Catalyst mill, the location of the Chemainus library, Stoney Hill, diking, Echo Heights and the Chemainus skate park. Going forward, he wants to focus on jobs, the environment, and reconciliation with First Nations. He also talked about council’s responsibility to all of the residents of the municipality.

“We are not here just so serve those who are well off,” he said. “We have to look after everyone.”

Along with Lefebure, Douglas and Walker were appointed as North Cowichan’s representatives on the Cowichan Valley Regional District board. The other four councillors will all serve as alternates.

The newly elected Lake Cowichan town council was sworn in on Tuesday with impressive ceremony.

The event was moved this year to Centennial Hall to accommodate the large crowd that turned up to watch.

As is traditional at the Lake, piper Frank Nichol led in Judge Keith Bracken followed by the mayor and council before the installation began.

Bracken, now a B.C. Supreme Court Justice, lives in Duncan but has traveled to Lake Cowichan to perform the ceremony ever since he first began doing it in 1999.

Change brings breath of fresh air to CVRD ptimism.

That’s been the pervading feeling this week as municipal governments in the Cowichan Valley have sworn in their newly-elected members.

The Nov. 15 elections saw a lot of changeover in some areas, with many new, young faces joining the more experienced returnees at board and council tables.

Our previous governments have done a pretty good job overall, but the new blood really has injected a lot of energy and enthusiasm into what can become rather staid and routine proceedings.

Nowhere was that more on display than at the inaugural meeting of the Cowichan Valley Regional District Wednesday evening.

A packed house was there to welcome four brand new faces to the board table — five if you count Municipality of North Cowichan representative Rob Douglas who was elected to his first term last month.

That’s more new blood than we’ve ever seen at the CVRD. Change was in the air immediately.

The brand new directors, in particular, wanted more information as they were not familiar with the personalities involved.

We admit, we experienced the same trepidation at the idea that some of the directors expressed.

Those of us who’ve followed the CVRD, or sat on it, for any length of time are painfully familiar with the sometime-propensity of the 15-person body to descend into exhausting, repetitive and lengthy discussion that can end

“Questions” become a thinlyveiled way to make speeches.

We were wrong.

What happened next was like a breath of fresh air.

Each of the four new directors asked one question apiece, which was answered in turn by each of the candidates. Returning directors refrained from muddying the waters.

North Cowichan Mayor Jon Lefebure, who proved to be the successful candidate for the chairmanship, expressed afterwards what many were thinking.

He pointed out, rightfully, how well the adoption of a new idea had gone, and admitted he’d sat at the table for years and never thought to ask questions of the candidates before. Change can be a really good thing.

This could prove to be a watershed moment for the board. It certainly provides some momentum for them to build upon.

Cyclists must review rules of the road I am appalled at the lack of responsibility some bicyclists take within the Cowichan Valley.

They have the right to the road just as much as other road users however they seem to take the stance of “I have full right of way no matter what I do.” If they would take the time to review the laws in B.C. they would see there is a rather large disconnect.

Recently I was stuck behind three cyclists who proceeded to ride abreast of one another.

Upon mentioning that, by law, they must ride in single file they proceeded to respond with the usual finger and with the answer “Screw off, its my right as a cyc-

list.” This occurs almost every time there is a group of riders.

Once I was at home and within reach of a computer, I in fact searched this law. Upon finding the B.C. site showing the laws I found this within the “Rights and duties of operator of cycle” which states “(2) A person operating a cycle (d) must not ride abreast of another person operating a cycle on the roadway,” which clearly defines that this action is illegal.

I ask all cyclists to simply review their rights and duties when operating a cycle, just as much as I ask all road users to review there rights and duties.

This time of year is always the worst for accidents involving all road traffic. Let’s all take

responsibility and act accordingly. Re: stop printing letters denying climate change (Nov. 21) “Climate change” has become an all-too-elastic phrase that means everything, and thus nothing.

Of course the climate changes.

At issue is whether man is a cause of it, to what extent, and whether there’s third variable factors that haven’t been discovered or properly researched yet.

It is premature to claim that people who are skeptical of the anthropogenic theory of global warming are “spreading lies”.

Climate alarmists try to get a leg up by claiming that the opposition is not only wrong, but evil. They use phrases like “the science is settled” which proves nothing more than that they have no understanding of how science works.

Science is not static. Without skepticism and rigorous exploration of all possibilities, science does not move forward. Many times in history, scientists who were scoffed at and told they were wrong have been eventually proven correct, though they were on the margins of popular consensus of their day. Stifling their debates would have been wrong then, and it’s wrong now.

By the way, if we were actually bound by the standard that “errors of fact” should not be printed in newspapers, the letter writer’s letter shouldn’t have made it past the editorial desk, simply for the assumption that newspapers print letters based on the idea that a majority of the citizens hold the opinions they contain.

Low beams help make vehicles visible Regarding the recent correspondence about the use or nonuse of low beam headlights as a way of improving road safety.

I would point out that this factor was recognized by the Canadian government in 1988 when it became law that ALL vehicles registered in Canada from that date onwards must be fitted with daytime running lights (DRLs).

These are usually the high beams set on a lower voltage so as to reduce glare and operate automatically when the vehicle’s engine is started.

The disadvantage of this feature is that the rear lights of the

vehicle do not come on at the same time.

Using low beams in conditions of poor visibility has the great advantage that the use of low beams also causes the rear lights to operate, greatly increasing the visibility of the vehicle from the rear.

Thus my recommendation is that all drivers check their vehicles to ensure that their DRL’s are fully operational as required by the law and to add the operation of the low beams (and rear lights) in conditions of poor visibility.

Woodsmoke 101: heating with wood — what’s in the smoke?

Editor’s Note: This article is the third in a series the Citizen will be publishing in partnership with the provincial Ministry of the Environment and the Cowichan Valley Regional District about the importance of clean air the effects of pollution.

People like to heat with wood because it’s a renewable resource, and much less expensive compared to other heating options.

As well, while estimates of the amounts differ, using wood produces far less greenhouse gas compared to furnace oil or natural gas. On the other hand, even pellet stoves, the cleanest wood burning option, can produce almost 40 times more fine particulate pollution than an oil furnace and 60 times more than a natural gas furnace — EPA certified woodstoves and non-certi-

fied woodstoves emissions are hundreds of times higher.

Wood smoke is a sign of inefficient burning and contains many hundreds of harmful gases and chemicals, just like cigarette smoke or vehicle exhaust. Nitrogen dioxide is a lung irritant, as are many of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, aldehydes, phenols and quinones that are present in woodsmoke. Some are known to cause cancer in humans — dioxins, formaldehyde, benzene, and benzo[a]pyrene, to name a few.

Breathing woodsmoke is not guaranteed to give you cancer — but it adds to the overall burden of exposure to pollutants from many sources.

For some people, this might result in cancer.

Check your chimney to grade your woodstove’s performance WOODSMOKE, From Page 11 The International Agency for Research on Cancer recently classified fine particulate air pollution as a known carcinogen, based on substantial evidence provided from studies around the world.

On balance, it’s hard to know which heating option provides the highest net benefit. Do reductions in greenhouse gases and financial savings for some offset increases in local particulate pollution, health impacts and potential medical costs?

The answer may depend on who you ask, but taking reasonable actions to reduce the impacts of wood smoke pollution makes sense.

Real-life tests suggest that the toxicity of wood smoke can vary a lot, depending on how you operate your woodstove. Lack of air supply creates the most toxic smoke, followed by loading too much wood.

Other tests have shown that moist wood (higher than 30 per cent dry basis moisture) produces more fine particulates. This means that even if you have a new, certified woodstove, using it incorrectly can make it no better than older high polluting woodstoves.

The amount of smoke coming out of your chimney shows how well your woodstove is operating.

Visit the CVRD website (www. cvrd.bc.ca/index.aspx?NID=1466) to get more information on how to check the moisture level of your wood, and how to check the amount of smoke coming out of your chimney to see if you are burning efficiently.

Also, consider upgrading your old woodstove in 2015 with a rebate from the CVRD, and improve air quality for you and your neighbours. Pellet stoves are the cleanest option, and using a HEPA air filter can help reduce your exposure indoors.

Continuing to build relationships with First Nations will also be key, he said.

Before voting began on the first ballot, new Cobble Hill Director Matteus Clement threw the group a curve ball by suggesting directors be allowed to ask questions of the candidates, particularly the new directors who are not as familiar with those who were nominated.

After discussion where some directors expressed reluctance to proceed with a question period without a procedure in place to govern it, the idea was approved and the four new electoral area directors each asked the candidates one question.

They ranged in subject from ideas to improve economic prospects in the area, to addressing the issues brought forward by climate change and how they would run the board.

The first ballot saw none of the three win a majority, so lowest vote getter Mary Marcotte withdrew and a second ballot was taken, with Lefebure coming out the winner.

Lori Iannidinardo was acclaimed as board vice chair.

After Lefebure took his seat he thanked outgoing chair Rob Hutchins for his service, then went on to praise the process they’d just undertaken. “There was new thinking,” he said of the question period and how smoothly it ran.

“This is indicative of what this board can do.

He comes into the job with no fixed agenda, he said, but is strictly against backroom deals, politicking and cliques on the board that pit electoral areas against municipal directors, something that has caused problems in the past.

Lefebure said he is invested in the success of the board, which will require acting as a team.

“I take that very seriously,” he said, before a packed gallery.

He went on to identify what he believes will be some of the most important things facing the board in the next four years.

“I’m very optimistic that this board will bring a commitment to regional watershed governance, will find ways to protect our region from contaminated soil, will

Community steps up for Ellisons LEXI BAINAS CITIZEN

After the devastating fire at the Ellison Farm Nov. 14, friends and supporters in the wider community sprang into action to help Breanne and Colten Ellison recover from their loss.

Besides helping out with immediate offers of direct assistance, they are organizing a huge barn dance, meal and auction to raise money for the couple.

The fire destroyed a barn and its contents on the Ellison property.

It barn dance takes place Sunday, Dec. 7 from 4-9 p.m. at Avalon Equestrian Centre at 2442 Herd Rd., north of Duncan.

As the event nears, on the Facebook page Fundraiser for the Breanne and Colten Ellison Farm Fire, folks have been buzzing with news about the barn dance.

Organizers are gathering up tents, outdoor lighting, a compressor, barbecues, food, and auction items plus figuring out what to put on a sign advertising the event and lining up the entertainment.

The food sounds delicious and the auction items range all the way from power tools to eyelash extensions.

“Wow, I cannot believe all the work you have all put in to organize this,” Breanne Ellison posted.

“I am truly amazed. All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you. I am truly grateful and touched by each and every one of you for your incredible generosity.”

A neighbour, Jacque Duncan, replied, “Awe Breanne, this isn’t work, this is play. Just wait till Sunday and you’ll see. There is a band going continual which makes people smile and all that food that this community has made will keep you warm and all the conversations with those you know and those you meet will make you happy. This is what makes it rewarding to everyone that is there. This Island is one big community, like one big family and that is what family does.

We support one another in all that we do.”

Local and Island musicians have lined up to help out. Music and sound is being provided by Ron Stewart Audio.

“When we heard about the Ellisons’ fire and when we were asked

by Jacque Duncan to help, we were in,” said Stewart’s partner, Laura Hesse.

“I know the Ellison family, having boarded my horse across the road for many years. They are a wonderful family and my heart broke for them when I heard of their loss.”

The band, Ron Stewart and Friends, will open the show.

“I was thrilled to be asked to help,” Stewart said, “and so were my band mates and fel-

low musicians when I told them about the cause.

There wasn’t a second’s hesitation.”

They will be joined by Valley singers Vicki Searle and Sharon Dudka and Kama King, daughter of legendary country singer, Gerry King.

Kama has just returned from Vancouver where her father was inducted into Canada’s Country Hall of Fame. The rest of the lineup includes ballad singer Cheryl Dunwoodie, Dave Marco and musician and singer Terry Sheldrake.

Tickets for the whole event are $15 each or $35 for a family of four.

Chemainus students ready to dance LEXI BAINAS CITIZEN

Chemainus Secondary School is celebrating the holiday season with a pair of

dance showcases.

They’re scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 10 and Thursday, Dec. 11, according to teacher Ashley Bell, who said the students are excited about their performances.

Doors open at 6:30pm and the shows start at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for students/seniors, and $20 for a family of four (two adults, two students/seniors). They are on sale at the school office but don’t hold back if you can’t get them in advance. You can also get them at the door, she said.

There will be a raffle as well as a bake sale.

All audience members will have a chance to win a door prize each night.

“Come out and support your local dancers,” Bell urged Chemainus residents.

The folks at Dominion Lending Centre in Duncan certainly do and they have been happily collecting new bicycles to give away to the less fortunate here in the Cowichan Valley. “This is the first year we’ve done this here,” said Maria Kyle, owner of the Duncan office. “I was hoping for 10 bikes and we’ve got 20 already. Next year, we’re going to have to meet or beat that. People have been amazingly generous.” Not only will happy recipients get a great new bicycle, a donor has also come forward to supply them all with locks as well. Donate your toys, toiletries and tuques The Social Media Club is collecting toys, toiletries and tuques Saturday, Dec. 6 outside Walmart at Cowichan Commons from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This fourth annual event is all about helping the less fortunate and people enjoy the chance to help out and get themselves a gourmet hot dog.

“With the economic downturn, we knew that many families, single parents, seniors and individuals were struggling and we wanted to be able to help make the holidays a little brighter for them,” said Cori McCaw, explaining the genesis of the event.

“There are five food banks within the Cowichan region that serve hundreds of families (Duncan, Mill Bay, Lake Cowichan, Chemainus and Ladysmith).

“Many organizations collect for the food banks and we decided to put a twist on it. So we decided to collect non-food items to help build the Holiday Hampers and make the Christmas dinner events a little more special. We wanted to make sure everyone has something for under the tree or in a stocking. Toys for the kids, a gift certificate or toiletries for the teens and something for the parents too,” she said.

There are other places to drop off donations as well, including Lucky Paws Pet Supply in Mill Bay, Cowichan Sound and Cellular’s two Duncan locations, Lake Cowichan Eyecare, Vancouver Island Insurance Centres in Cobble Hill and Ladysmith, Chemainus Village Computer Centre and Speedy Glass, Red Balloon Toyshop and Cycle Therapy in Duncan.

The Causeway leading to Walcheren Island was 1,200 yards long, 40 metres wide and straight as a gun barrel. On it ran a two-lane road, an elevated railroad track and a bicycle path.

Each side of the Causeway was marshy salt flats of deep mud which were impossible to cross.

Along the complete length of the Causeway there was absolutely

no cover for advancing troops.

I’ll try to describe the preparations the Germans had made to hold back any attack. I’ve read several accounts of the Causeway battle; the following is an attempt to describe what awaited us.

About 500 yards from the end the Germans had blown a huge crater. The enemy was virtually indestructible in the concrete bunkers they’d built at their end and in the Walcheren dikes that ran north and south on Walcheren at the western end of the Causeway. On top of these dikes they had firing trenches. They’d sited 88 mm guns to fire down its length and had positioned two

others both north and south of the Causeway.

Developed as an anti-aircraft weapon, the 88 was a deadly weapon with a very high velocity.

They were mounted on their tanks [employed as field guns.]

They also had heavy and light mortars and the ever-present machine guns. German artillery for miles around was also sighted on the [Causeway]. On top of all this, they had at least one heavy coast gun aimed [at] the Causeway. There were mines planted everywhere, including on the embankment. At the western end they’d built a roadblock.

They’d had many months, even years, to get ready.

By Oct. 31 we’d reached the western end of the South Beveland Peninsula. The last remaining obstacle was the Causeway and Walcheren Island. The Black Watch of our 5th Brigade was ordered to advance down the Causeway and “bump” a bridgehead at the far end.

I hate the expression, “bump.”

When you bump the enemy a number of men get killed and wounded. It’s as though many people in command have no feeling for the common soldier who’s doing the fighting.

There’s a vast variety of entertainment coming your way in December at the Duncan Showroom.

Here are just a few of the upcoming shows: On Friday, Dec. 5, Katrina Kadoski returns to Duncan with her award winning multi-media play, Cougar Annie Tales, about the life of an iconic Vancouver Island frontierswoman. A hit at the 2012 Victoria Fringe Festival, she has toured this production across B.C. and it’s always a hit in Duncan. • The Cowichan Valley’s own DDT Drumline recently performed during Grey Cup festivities in Vancouver.

“The Drummers were invited by Grey Cup to perform at several events last weekend including the Grey Cup Festival, Tailgate VIP Party and as main stage artists,” leader Dustin Dollman said.

• The Duncan-Cowichan Chamber of Commerce has announced its new directors for 2014/15.

“This is a volunteer board. Our directors and their organizations are signaling a keen community commitment. They freely contribute time and expertise to support a vital economic landscape for Cowichan,” said Chamber president Julie Scurr.

There are 18 seats on the board with 12 elected and six appointed. Directors serve a two-year term for a maximum of three terms. Returning to the board are Chris Duncan, Moira Hauk, Julie Scurr, Corrine Thompson and Marsha Todd.

New Directors include Karen Bittner, Ruth Hartmann and Martin Buck.

They’ll all be joining Miles Craig Anderson, Danielle Killam, George Gates, Jason Price and Carol Messier.

The appointed directors are Cathy Robertson, Jean Cardino and Keith Chicquen.

The new Chamber executive will be elected at the next board of directors meeting in early December.

• Duncan Christian School’s annual Rice Raiser program has handed out $4,018.18 to help its drive to end hunger.

The program, run in connection with Thrifty Foods in Duncan, saw $1,180.03 worth of rice purchased, topped up by an additional $338.15 in donations.

The Cowichan Basket Society is receiving $1,518.18. (Thrifty’s will give a Smile card with $1,180.03 on it and DCS will give a check for $338.15 to the Society).

The second half of the fundraiser goes to International Hunger Relief for mothers in the Laliputur district of Nepal.

That project is getting $2,500; $500 from Thrifty Foods which is matched 4:1 by CIDA for a grand total of $2,500.

Jeannine the Machine is headed to the Hall of Fame.

Almost 10 years to the day since she made her professional boxing debut, Duncan-born-and-raised Jeannine Garside got the call on Dec. 1 that she will be part of the International Women’s Boxing Hall of Fame Class of 2015.

“It’s awesome,” she said. “It’s the icing on the cake. I’m grateful for the experience that I had, and reliving that puts a big smile on my face.”

Garside began boxing in the late 1990’s.

After a stellar amateur career, in which she went 40-5 and won four national championships, she made her pro debut on Dec. 4, 2004. Her pro career saw her go 10-3-1 over six years, capping her career in 2010 with a win over Germany’s Ina Menzer for the WBC featherweight title.

“I strove and strove and strove for the opportunity to fight in Germany,” she recalled. “There were a lot of ups and downs along the way, but I learned from them and I was ready to win that fight when I got there. It was a miraculous experience.”

Garside’s career included two fights in her hometown. On June 6, 2009 at the Island Savings Centre, she won an eight-round unanimous decision over Dominga Olivo of New York for the WBC International featherweight title. On April 24, 2010 at Fuller Lake Arena, she TKO’d Lindsay Garbatt of Oshawa, Ontario in the third round of a scheduled 10-round fight, reclaiming the vacant WIBA featherweight title.

“That fight that [promoter Wally Petrovic] put together is what allowed me to fight in Germany,” she said, noting that the WIBA ranked her No. 1 in the world after beating Garbatt, something the German boxing

Garside will be among eight inductees to the Hall of Fame, including six boxers from the modern era of women’s boxing. Among her fellow inductees is Laila Ali, daughter of Muhammad Ali and one of the biggest

names in women’s boxing.

“I hope it draws more attention to the sport,” she said. “I hope boxing stays strong.”

Also in the group is Laura Serrano, who Garside won a unanimous decision against in 2006, the first time she won the WIBA belt.

“I’m looking forward to being there with women that were once my competitors and are now my comrades,” she said.

The Hall of Fame ceremony will take place in Florida in July, five years to the month since her last fight. She has already fielded calls from many family and friends

who want to be there, including her No. 1 fan, her father, Allan Garside.

“He always has been and always will be my biggest fan,” she said.

Garside was inducted into the North Cowichan/Duncan Sports Wall of Fame in 2010, and has always appreciated the support from her hometown. She hopes to move back to the Cowichan Valley eventually.

“They never forgot me,” she said. “They always have my back. My heart is in Duncan. Going back there is always in the big picture.”

Today, Garside lives in Windsor, Ontario with her husband, former national silver medallist Dave Larkin and her 11-year-old daughter and two-and-a-half-year-old son, who loves to dig through his mom’s cabinet and try on the gloves she has saved from some of her bouts. She misses boxing, but is glad to be able to spend time with her family.

“That’s what I was all about: the passion and the glory,” she recalled. “And I got to experience it. At the time, I wasn’t even thinking about the sacrifice. Watching people that you love fight isn’t easy. I want my kids to box, but I don’t want to be tortured by it.”

Garside still dreams about going back in the ring, although being inducted into the Hall of Fame puts something of a cap on her career.

“I never said the words officially that I retired,” she said. “I found that too hard to say. But I felt I reached my goal and I was ready to let go.”

Now, she wants to inspire a new generation, whether they want to go into boxing or pursue other interests.

“I always say, ‘if you believe in yourself, the rest will follow,’” she said. “If someone says no to you, break down that door.”

The Cowichan Valley Capitals and Cowichan Sound & Cellular are set to host their annual Critter Toss this Friday night as the Caps take on the Victoria Grizzlies at the Island Savings Centre.

Fans are invited to bring a stuffed teddy bear or other animal and throw them on the ice when the team scores its first goal of the game. All toys will be donated to the Salvation Army and distributed to children and families in need.

Fans can bring their own new or gently used toys to the game, or purchase one in

the lobby of the Island Savings Centre. Proceeds from toy sales at the game will go to the Cowichan Basket Society food bank.

Friday’s game begins at 7 p.m. The Caps will also play host to the Langley Rivermen on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Crofton’s Jesse Jenks is among six goalies vying for a spot with Team Canada West at the 2014 World Junior A Challenge during a selection camp in Calgary this weekend.

Jenks, who played minor hockey in the Cowichan Valley before embarking on his junior A career with the Prince George Spruce Kings, played four games with

Canada West at the same tournament a year ago and is hoping to return for this year’s event, which will run Dec. 14-20 in Kindersley, Sask.

Jenks has nine wins and six losses in 15 appearances for the Spruce Kings this year, along with a 3.47 goals-against average and .905 save percentage. He has committed to play for the NCAA Div. 1 University of Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks for 2015/16.

Brentwood sweeps consolation at provincial AA tournament

Some close calls in the early going and a sweep in the consolation bracket led to a ninth-place finish for Brentwood College School at the provincial AA girls volleyball championships the school hosted last weekend, but coach Jill Fougner is extremely optimistic about the future.

Brentwood, which went into the tournament ranked 11th, went 1-2 in pool play, losing in three sets to fourth-seeded Surrey Christian, the eventual bronze medallists, and D.P. Todd, and defeating Smithers in two straight sets.

“We were really, really close in pool play,” Fougner said. “It could have gone either way.”

That set up a tough crossover match with highly ranked St. Thomas More, which Brentwood took to the limit, losing the fifth set 16-14.

“We really pushed them,” Fougner said. “As a coach I was satisfied. You want your team to be peaking this time of year, and they were doing that.”

The team had to rally quickly after the heartbreaking loss to St. Thomas More, but they surged through the consolation round, beating Selkirk, Princess Margaret’s, and Langley Fundamental in two sets each to finish atop the bracket.

“We finished up with three straight wins, so as a coach I was pleased to see that,” Fougner said.

“In these tournaments, a couple of points can send a game in one direction or another.”

“I think it was pretty good for our first tournament of the year,” head coach Sandeep Heer said. “We had a pretty good showing.”

The T-Birds lost to Oak Bay 82-76 in the final, mounting a massive comeback to get close to tying the game.

“We got off to a bit of a slow start,” said Heer, whose team trailed 32-16 after the first quarter, but came back to lose by just six. “If we had another quarter, we probably would have beaten them. I was happy with the way we battled back and kept it a game.”

Cowichan opened the tournament with a 103-63 win over Ladysmith, in which brothers Josh and Noah Charles each put up 17 points. They advanced to crush Wellington 77-33 behind 28 points by Josh Charles, 12 by Kain Melchior and 11 by Nirmal Hayer. In the semifinal, Josh Charles scored 33 points in an 82-65 victory over Claremont.

Heer was impressed with his team’s play in a tough field.

“There were some good teams there,” he said. “The first few games, I wasn’t sure how we would do, but the guys played really well. We got a lot of contributions from a lot of different guys.”

pionships, Brentwood didn’t make it last year, and this year’s team was missing that valuable experience. The players who come back next year will have been through the pressure, however.

“The experience gained this year, with tough, tough losses will go a long way with strengthening them,” Fougner said.

Brentwood will lose just four players from this year’s team: captains Lauren Hanson and Hannah Colbourne, and Mollie McPhee-Green and Hannah Wood. Among the returning players next year will be three seniors who started last year as Grade 10s.

“We have a great young talent base,” Fougner said. “We are really excited for 2015, for sure.”

Sports fans in the Cowichan Valley can get a glimpse of roller derby this Saturday as the Candy Crushers host Wreck the Halls at the Cowichan Exhibition’s Mellor Hall.

“We invite the community of Cowichan to come check out roller derby and see for yourselves what a fun, crazy, awesome sport this is and why it’s now the fastest growing sport in North America,” said Candy Crushers coach Amanda Gould, known on the roller derby floor as Miss B Haven.

The event will feature scrimmages at three different levels: juniors (ages 10-18), rookie adults, and advanced adults. The doors open at 2 p.m. for an arts and crafts sale, with all items handmade by the junior team as a fundraiser for the coming season. The junior scrimmage will go at 3 p.m., followed by the rookie adults at 5 p.m. and the advanced adults at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 per spectator.

“The highlight for this event will be the junior open scrimmage in which we have juniors from many different levels participating,” Gould said.

“We have juniors from Duncan, Nanaimo, Cumberland, Vancouver and Chilliwack. and three of them have just been chosen to be on Junior Team Canada for 2015.”
