Duncan crews douse 2 fires

Tech sector Valley’s future?

A rental home on Festubert Street and the office of Cowichan Towing on Roberts Road were hit by fires within a short span this past week. The Duncan Volunteer Fire Department was called to both blazes, continuing a busy stretch for the hall. Just after 8 p.m. on Friday, firefighters were called to a house on Festubert, where flames had started in a back bedroom. According to fire chief Mike McKinlay, it was a quick knockdown, complicated somewhat by the fact that the steps to the upstairs bedroom had burned away, requiring the firefighters to use external ladders to reach the second floor. After dousing the flames, firefighters were on scene for another two and a half hours for clean-up purposes. The fire was not considered suspicious.

The Cowichan Valley should be investing in things like wireless and office space to build a local tech industry, Damir Wallener, a software development company owner, pitched to the Cowichan Valley Regional District board. “What we get out of it is jobs,” Wallener said, citing potential employment figures in the hundreds. He’s been spurred on by his own personal experience. Wallener has been urged to move to New York for his business, but he didn’t want to do that — he wanted to stay right here on Vancouver Island. His first choice was to locate in the Cowichan Valley, but he simply couldn’t get talent to come here, he told the board. Now he is located in Victoria, a city that has made a concerted effort to attract technical industries.
