Rising above the fog at the Malahat Summit rest area, Island MLAs Don McRae and Michelle Stilwell officially declared the completion of the latest set of upg rades to the Malahat Highway. T he project, which was announced by McRae and Stilwell
last May, comes in on budget and two months ahead of schedule. “This project completes the $33 million investment made by this government to improve the safety and reliability of the Malahat for all the commuters, families, visitors and truckers who drive it,” said McRae, who represents the Comox Valley riding. Stilwell, who represents Parks-
ville-Qualicum, noted that the project will improve the drive for the 22,000 motorists, including families, tourists, commuters and commercial drivers who use the highway on a daily basis. “This safety upgrade to the Malahat portion of Highway 1 has improved the beautiful mountain drive between Victoria and the rest of Vancouver Island,
making it a safer connection for everyone living in, working in, or visiting our region,” she said. Costing $15 million, the latest upgrades involved widening 2.3 kilometres of highway from Shawnigan Lake Road to the summit to make room for new median barriers. See HEAD-ON, Page 12

A Ladysmith man has been charged with manslaughter following the death of a woman in a mobile home park south of the town earlier this week. Trevor George Meers, 50, is facing one count of manslaughter in connection with the death of a 55-year-old Ladysmith woman following an altercation at the Campers Corner RV Park on Tuesday night. Meers will remain in custody until his next court appearance on Feb. 10. Just before midnight on Tuesday, police received a call reporting a fight between people at a residence located in the RV park at 10935 Trans-Canada Highway. The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit and the Ladysmith RCMP are working together to investigate the death. “Investigators are in the very early stages of this investigation,” Vancouver Island RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Darren Lagan said on Wednesday. “There is no evidence to suggest there is any risk to the public.” When police and paramedics responded, they located the victim, who died at the scene. Meers was taken into custody at the scene. Anyone with information about the incident should contact the Ladysmith RCMP at 250-245-2215 or 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
