Police probing possible drug impairment in fatal collision KEVIN ROTHBAUER CITIZEN

Police are looking into the role that drugs may have played in a fatal single-vehicle collision on the Trans-Canada Highway on Saturday night.

A 46-year-old Esquimalt man who was in the front passenger seat died shortly after the crash, while the driver, a 45-year-old Victoria man, and another passenger, a 60-year-old Esquimalt woman, were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Shawnigan Lake RCMP, BC Ambulance Service and the Shawnigan Lake Fire Department were called to the scene not far from the 17km marker of Malahat Drive around 8 p.m. on Saturday.

A four-door Pontiac Grand Am was travelling south and struck the rock face next to the highway, causing significant damage to the front passenger side.

Crews worked to save the male passenger, but were unable to and he died shortly after being transported from the scene. His name has not been released.

“Shawnigan Lake RCMP and RCMP South Island Traffic Services continue to investigate the cause of this crash, including possible drug impairment on the part of the driver,” Sgt. Andre Dentoom said in a media release.

“As this is an ongoing criminal investigation, no further details will be released.”

The highway was closed for several hours while a collision analyst/reconstructionist examined the site. Traffic was redirected during the closure.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or observed a grey 2002 four-door Pontiac Grand Am on the highway prior to 8 p.m. is urged to contact South Island Traffic Services at 250-416-0352.

The Cowichan Valley Regional District has taken up the cause of angry Honeymoon Bay residents.

According to Dir. Ian Morrison, they’ve been expressing annoyance about dirt from logging trucks getting onto the main road.

He took his concerns to the electoral area services committee and they agreed to ask CVRD board chair Jon Lefebure to write a letter to the transportation ministry about it.

“I’d equate this to sitting on a powder keg,” Morrison said.

“We’ve always had that mud and dust issue like they do at Youbou but it’s been getting way worse.”

The problem occurs right by the old log sort at the east end of the community, where trucks come off the haul road onto South Shore Road. Dirt and gravel fall off the trucks onto the roadway where they turn.

“The difficulty is that everybody else has to drive through it so everybody is complaining that they have to wash their car virtually every day and when it drops down to freezing, people are complaining that it’s getting to be very slick,” Morrison said.

Dir. Ian Morrison of Transportation to do what they need to do. But they seem to keep putting it on the shoulders of the forest companies.”

Somebody washed the road on Saturday or Sunday but Morrison said that by Tuesday the problem was back.

“I’ve got residents who are angry. They are upset no one seems to want to do anything about it. According to Ministry of Transportation that haul road is a privately owned industrial road so the forest companies that use it are responsible. And that is not just one company anymore. But people are fed up. They want to see some action on this now,” he said.

A f ew p o cke t s o f p e o p l e remained without power in the Cowichan Valley on Monday morning after a windstorm swept across Southern Vancouver Island Sunday night.

In total 5,000 customers lost electricity at the height of the outage.

“Shawnigan Lake area was hit very hard,” said B.C. Hydro spokesperson Ted Olynyk. “We

had a number of trees coming down on top of lines, we had about 10 spans of lines down, broken poles in areas.”

“Of course when we get storms on the South Island, Shawnigan Lake, the nature of the geography, it’s going to be hit hard.

The wind funnels down,” he explained.

On the southern Island as a whole almost 20,000 customers lost power. BC Hydro brought in crews from the Mainland to

help restore power, and 20 crews worked to get things back up and running in Cowichan.

“We knew it was going to be big,” Olynyk said of the storm, which intensified as it approached.

This meant Hydro was prepared, but predicting the exact path a storm will take is tough, making identifying where outages will occur before the do almost impossible.

“We don’t know until it happens,” he said.

Swan flap hits farm country ANDREA RONDEAU CITIZEN

A trumpeter swan fleeing the noise from a propane cannon knocked out power at Stephen Hunt’s home last Friday morning, leading him to call for dairy farmers in the area to see if they can live more peacefully with the large birds.

Farmers say the birds are pests that, along with Canada geese, cause devastation to their fields.

“We live here in dairy farm country and the trumpeters tend to land on the dairy fields and hang out there for a while,” Hunt said of the area around the Phipps and Bench road intersection just south of Duncan. “For whatever reason our neighbours are under the impression that they actually eat some of the grass, which can turn to hay, which I guess reduces their production or something like that, though it’s pretty far-fetched given the few number of trumpeters and the massive amount of grass.”

Trumpeter swans are a species that was once at risk in B.C. and is still considered vulnerable. The farmers don’t attempt to kill the birds, but Hunt said they set off noisy devices, often propane cannons, called bangers to scare them away from their fields.

“Today I heard one of those go off and very soon thereafter I heard an electrical noise and saw something smoking,” Hunt said.

Their power had also gone out, so he called BC Hydro who told him it wasn’t a transformer problem.

“So I walked up the road and looked and sure enough it’s a trumpeter with a big hole him from I guess hitting the line. He smells all electrical and smoky,” he said.

He figures the banger scared a group of the birds and one of them hit the lines.

Hunt said he believes science should dictate the relationship between the farmers and the swans.

“I really, really have a hard time believing the effects of the trumpeters on their hayfields is anything other than miniscule if at all,” he said.

Bob Crawford, president of the Cowichan Agricultural Society, begs to differ.

“They are definitely a pest,” he said. “Bigtime.”

The problem is in the way they feed, he said, as they like the tender new shoots and pull the grass out by the roots.

“They do cause crop damage,” Crawford said. “Especially this time of the year.”

Farms close to lakes and flyways can be pretty hard hit, he said.

“Some places are pretty inundated with them,” he said.

Firearms charges laid Police search for missing Crofton man against Duncan man NANAIMO DAILY NEWS AND TIMES COLONIST

Firearms charges have been laid against two men, one from Duncan, after two related 2013 investigations by the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia.

Luke Gregory Massey, 33, of Duncan, was taken into custody

by Nor th Cowichan/Duncan RCMP officers at about 9 a.m. on Jan. 14 in the 4900 block of Cowichan Lake Road.

He faces two counts of trafficking firearms knowing he was not authorized to do so, one count of possession of firearms for the purpose of trafficking, one count of knowingly making a false statement about the theft of firearms and one count of public mischief, with intent to mislead, causing peace officers to enter an investigation by reporting a theft that had not been committed.

Also charged with 11 counts of firearms-related offences is Jason Donald Whyte, 43, of Surrey, who was arrested on Jan. 13.

The charges against him include possession of a firearm while prohibited, possession of a prohibited device while prohibited, possession of ammunition while prohibited, possession of firearms

for the purpose of trafficking, possession of restricted firearms with readily accessible ammunition without being the holder of a licence, possession of a loaded restricted firearm without being the holder of a licence, possession of firearms knowing that he was not the holder of a licence, possession of a prohibited device (an oversized ammunition magazine) knowing he was not the holder of a licence and possession of firearms knowing that the serial numbers had been defaced.

The investigation into Whyte began in August of 2013 and the Special Enforcement Unit said that probe led them to Massey “who we believe is connected to Whyte in their similar and possibly even joint, criminal enterprises involving guns,” said Sgt. Lindsey Houghton, media relations officer for the unit.

The investigation into Massey began in October of 2013.

Massey has been released, and Whyte remains in custody.

The Nanaimo RCMP wants the public’s assistance locating 42year-old Jason Radmacher, of Crofton, reported missing last Wednesday.

Radmacher is the manager of King Arthur’s Court, located at 564 Fifth St. in Nanaimo, and was last seen at approximately 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, walking toward the University Village Mall. Radmacher did not return to work all day Tuesday which is out of character for him. He also did not return at the end of the day to his home in Crofton, which again is out of character.

Police have determined that Radmacher was a foot passenger on the 10:30 a.m. sailing Jan. 13 from Departure Bay to Horseshoe Bay. Security video at the Horseshoe Bay terminal shows Radmacher leaving from the foot-passenger exit after the ferry arrived at 12:15 p.m.

Radmacher does not have drug or alcohol issues and there were no presenting medical conditions. He has limited friends or associates since moving from Prince George to Nanaimo in October of 2014. Radmacher does have access to a bank account however investigators have not been able to determine if he has accessed the account within the

“All they want to know is that he is in good health and for reasons known only to him, has decided to move on.”

Radmacher is a white man, five foot seven and 130 pounds. He has dirty blond hair worn to his shoulders and a scruffy beard.

He was last seen wearing a jean jacket with a grey hoodie underneath and blue jeans.

Parents must shape up or be shipped out e wonder where kids could possibly have learned bullying and bad behaviour.

Then we hear about the hockey parents who are behaving so poorly at games that the Vancouver Island Amateur Hockey Association is actually considering the last resort of banning spectators from some games.

Sadly, a few really bad eggs are threatening to ruin it for everyone.

One incident is being investigated where Island parents were apparently drunk when they got off the bus at an away tourna-

ment, and one mom allegedly took off her bra in the stands and swung it around her head to encourage the team.

Yikes.

Who would want to be that mom’s kid? Complete humiliation.

But worse are the incidents where parents have threatened young players, officials and even other parents.

What kind of lesson are you teaching the bevy of kids around you, including your own, when you threaten someone who is decades your junior and considerably smaller than you are.

Is this not the epitome of bullying?

They’re having trouble getting officials to even continue to participate due to the appalling behaviour directed towards them.

We understand that often these officials are very young themselves — teens at best.

We don’t blame them for being disillusioned and hitting the road.

Anyone would be frightened.

These people obviously can’t properly control themselves.

Kids shouldn’t be subjected to having to face down out-of-

control adults. We’re not talking jovial trash talking (which should really be saved for when you’re watching the guys with the broad shoulders and big paycheques in the NHL, not when your 11-year-old’s team is playing). We’re talking full-on shouting, expletives and, in extreme cases, even threats.

Wasn’t this whole thing supposed to be fun?

Wasn’t it supposed to be about a group of kids strapping on some gear and dreaming of being the next Wayne Gretzky or Sidney Crosby?

Time for a reality check.

What will certainly get his ire up even more is the wasteful spending the Municipality of North Cowichan is proposing.

Fourteen million dollars for a new RCMP headquarters.

Seven hundred forty-four thousand for nine full time equivalent clerical staff = $82,000 per person.

These are just two of the line items we are also paying for in our policing costs. Yet we seem to need a community policing group and we need to withdraw

this from the taxpayers pocket like a human ATM because it provides a valuable service to the community!

I for one am getting tired of having to pay two local governments nearly $4,000 per year on a residence that is quickly going down in price as the politicians continue to believe that we need all of these incendiary line items.

Unfortunately, even though we were able to get an open invitation to the Committee of the Whole meeting on Jan. 12, only five people from the public bothered to show up and only two of those five took advantage to use their two minutes to speak on the issues we saw with the 2015 proposed budget.

There was a heck of a lot more

to criticize, but alas I believe that this council will give the staff a blank cheque to do with what they wish unless we all show up and make our voices heard.

Go to MNC website and CVRD website and show up at these meetings, sign up to speak, pick a key point and look your elected officials in the eyes and say enough is enough.

What we need is fiscal restraint and perhaps some economic development.

I would like to respond to Bryan Wallis’s letter posted in Jan. 14 edition.

While I agree with some of the points that he made i.e. that companies are exploiting the use of “being green”, I still feel he is missing the point on renewable energy.

I am also in favor of people being able to express their opinions, but it was in the way that he expressed his, that spoiled his well thought out letter.

Without the put-downs of others; belief systems, and ideals, I actually would have taken his letter a lot more seriously.

As you call us “environmental activists”, I like to think of myself as a caretaker here, with a responsibility to do as much as humanly possible to leave this world a better place for my children.

I had the privilege of seeing David Suzuki give a talk in Toronto about 20 years ago. He was one of the first people that I had ever seen have the courage to speak out against genetically modified foods.

He has been a voice, where many others have succumbed to intense greed or threats.

The closer we can all come together on keeping our planet clean and safe for future generations is really all that matters.

We need self sustainability. Big corporations and companies do not want that for us.

They will do anything in their power to keep us in their pockets.

The more we support local renewable energies and sources, the more debt free, happier and healthier we will all start to be.

Arts community made Cowichan experience special I am sending my sincere gratitude to Judy Brayden, Gloria S. Daly and her partner Jim, all the volunteers in the Cowichan Valley Arts Council, the Happy Creek Sawmill owner Wayne Smith, the people who made the beautiful cranes and mobiles, Beverly Russell, and Yuko Yamamoto and her family, and all other people whose hard works realized the Meeting the Master exhibition and the five-day fabric printing workshop in the Cowichan Valley in November, 2014.

On the last day CVAC President Gail Robertson gave me photos of the visit.

I am watching them now and recalling each moment of the unforgettable event.

Removal of children has become epidemic Stuart R. Stirling of Duncan got it right in his letter published in your Jan. 9, 2015 issue when he stated, “There is a crisis in our province that is more pronounced in our community of children being taken from their homes to support a system that profits from children being kept in foster homes.”

I applaud Mr. Stirling for coming forward and having a voice because the other piece to this which has not been mentioned is that parents of minor children in the Cowichan Valley are afraid to stand up against this Ministry, for fear they will be targeted by them.

I know this, despite the fact I have no minor children, I know of no less than nine children who have been taken by the Duncan Ministry of Children and Families.

When I was watching the keen-eyed predators from a close distance, I recalled my childhood in Nagano prefecture in Japan.

I used to be able to see kingfishers in the Chikuma River.

Unfortunately nature in Chikuma River was not preserved properly and I cannot see them anymore.

I went to the Cowichan Estuary Nature Centre and I found that they are also working hard for nature preservation.

In the Unsworth Winery I enjoyed watching healthy chickens walking around the grape vines and it was really a peaceful scene.

I found that the Cowichan Valley is a wonderful, artistic community and I am very glad to have been a part of the community, even in a temporary manner. I was honoured to meet Cowichan Tribes Chief William Seymour and Councillor Deborah Toporowski.

Compare that to when I was raising my boys, who now are in their 20s.

I raised them in Lake Cowichan; a small community where neighbours know one another, and everyone knows everyone’s business.

In the 20-plus years of raising my boys, I did not know of one child or family involved with this Ministry.

I had not heard of any child ever being removed from their home.

In the last two years, children being removed from homes in the Cowichan Valley has become an epidemic.

What is going on?

I will join Mr. Stirling’s voice and call for a full independent investigation into this Ministry of Children and Families here in the Cowichan Valley, and I will stand up and speak for all those parents who are too afraid of this Ministry to do so.

Absurd to pick it up excrement, then litter To the author of “our views” I could not agree more!

It’s sad how so many can ruin it for the community as a whole; now also I’m referring to the many green little bags of doggie poo hanging on many the side trails/roads, especially in one’s front yard.

I find it absurd people pick up in full view of others watching, only to wing it later elsewhere, because there too lazy to pack it to the nearest litter bin.

“If you like cars and trucks, you’re going to love 2015,” Edmunds.com wrote in an article outlining its choice for the best new cars of 2015.

On its list was the new Ford F150, which has received a lot of attention for its new aluminum body, as well Tesla Motors’ highly anticipated crossover SUV Model X, which is expected to be available later this year. Other manufacturers unveiling new vehicles or versions this year

include Audi, Cadillac, Jaguar and General Motors, to name a few.

Drivers are also on the hunt for the latest vehicle technology. Remember when automatic windows were considered revolutionary? Now we’re talking about technology that detects pedestrians and other objects around our vehicles, offers intelligent braking features and semi-autonomous driving.

In 2015, we can also expect to hear more about driverless vehicles. While the technology isn’t expected to become mainstream for the foreseeable future, it’s proof of how rapidly the auto industry is changing.

Auto enthusiasts can get a sneak peek at some of the industry’s latest advancements at the upcoming Vancouver International Auto Show, which takes place March 24 to 29 at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

This year’s show is expected to be even larger

than last year, which featured more than 400 vehicles from 30 companies around the world.

Attendance for last year’s six-day event reached 84,506 people in 2014, a five-percent increase from the year before.

We’re expecting this year’s show will be even bigger and better. That’s in part to the new show management team, which includes Jason Heard, one of the country’s most experienced show managers, his father and well-known businessman and event expert Phil Heard, and highly respected Canadian auto journalist Keith Morgan.

Water experts hope for cold weather LEXI BAINAS CITIZEN

A lack of snow pack on the local mountains doesn’t necessarily mean that the Valley is faced with another Cowichan River crisis again this year but the possibility is worrying to water watchers.

“It doesn’t look good right now,” said Rodger Hunter of the Cowichan Watershed Board.

“I’m just the opposite of everyone else. I hope we get some miserable cold weather now.”

Measurements taken at a snow course — a cluster of locations used to measure snow so a comparison can be assembled over years and a correlation made with lake levels in the spring — will help keep track of what is going on but a good fall of snow that stays in place would be helpful right now.

“We put our snow course up there on Dec. 28. And there is a snow pillow going up there, too.”

the advantages of this warmer weather is we can now install it,” he said.

“At this time last year, we didn’t have much of a snow pack either and we saw what happened,” he said. But, Hunter added, there is a precedent for something quite different.

“If you look back at the record dry summer of 1998, it was followed by a really wet summer in 1999,” he said.

Meanwhile, the membership of the watershed board is changing because of the local elections last fall.

“Both Cowichan Tribes and the Cowichan Valley Regional District will be in on the naming of the new board,” Hunter said. “The terms of the CVRD members and the members at large and the representatives from the federal and provincial governments are all up.”

Hunter himself is scheduled to meet this week with representatives from the Catalyst mill at Crofton — another important player in the Cowichan River scenario — to study weather forecasts to help plan for the future.

District superintendent retires LEXI BAINAS CITIZEN

He’s not leaving right this minute but Joe Rhodes, superintendent of schools for the Cowichan Valley School District, announced on Jan. 8 that he is retiring after 37 years in public education.

Rhodes has advised the Cowichan Valley Board of Education that, “with a new board in place and labour peace for the next few years, this is an ideal time to continue the development of an exciting, engaging, positive learning culture in the Cowichan Valley.”

He also said that if he was a few years younger, he would “relish the opportunity to lead the district in such a climate.”

It has been a busy time for him.

Rhodes has been everywhere during his eight year tenure with the district, serving first as director of middle/secondary education and then as superintendent.

Some of the projects he’s helped bring to fruition include the entire reorganization of the district’s schools and the deepening of connections with Vancouver Island University.

He also helped steer the district through the acrimonious province-wide teachers’ strike.

Joe Rhodes will be retiring from School District 79. [CITIZEN FILE] Rhodes said he is “particularly grateful to have had the privilege of working with his administrative team, a team filled with wisdom, enthusiasm and hope for a bright future for kids.”

Many of the new board of education have worked with Rhodes for some time.

WFP reopens Ladysmith mill ROSS ARMOUR DAILY NEWS

Western Forest Products re-opened its Ladysmith Sawmill Monday after it was closed for more than a month. The mill was first shut down on Dec. 5, leaving 75 employees without pay during the Christmas period.

WFP said a weakening market and lack of lumber need in China, which the mill on Ludlow Road caters specifically to, was initially the problem. But the company made the decision to re-open “late last week” after “securing some new orders,” confirmed director of communications Amy Spencer.

“We were able to get some new customers although the market is still challenging,” said Spencer.

All workers were called on Friday to return to work Monday.

“We want to keep the mill running for as long as we can. We have an order file for two months but more are coming after that,” said Spencer.

“When you are operating in a global market, there’s always that risk of uncertainty. It’s the same with all of our mills. It’s very much in our interest to have all of our mills operating at full capacity all the time.”

Ladysmith Mayor Aaron Stone was pleased with the news. “It’s good news for our community as it’s an important part of our employment landscape.

It’s encouraging that it started up again so quickly.

It’s unfortunate we can’t have more influence on the foreign markets, but we have to be happy.”

Stone says the mill is a large industrial contributor to the town’s tax base and said it’s positive news to see it moving forward and viable.

Perry’s story puts face on safety LEXI BAINAS CITIZEN

“I consider myself a soldier for safety,” said Nick Perry, injured 14 years ago in a workplace accident and now a WorkSafe BC ambassador.

“I like being on the front line in the community, spreading a positive message to employers and students about workplace safety and awareness.”

Perry’s story is one of determination to overcome tragedy.

But, he points out, tragedy doesn’t need to happen.

He gave two talks at Cowichan Secondary and one at Quamichan on Jan. 12.

“They were very well received.

I don’t think I’ve been to Quamichan before but I’ve been to Cow High a few times. I’ve been doing it for about 10 years now,” he said.

He’s tried to get around most of Vancouver Island and other parts of the B.C. Interior.

He was injured at a lumberyard in Victoria in 2001.

“I worked there for six months and after some quick training, I was left in a lot of difficult pos-

I got some of my friends hired on with me and we were left in a position one day with some unstrapped material on an uneven surface on the forklift.”

The lumber pile fell.

“I happened to catch about 10

sheets of it in the back,” he said.

He became an incomplete paraplegic but didn’t give up.

“After going through three years of rehabilitation and them telling me I was never going to walk again, I walked away from that accident.

“Now, I’m spreading a positive message at schools about safety and what WorkSafe BC is doing in the prevention area but also about getting away from the paraplegia and out of the chair,” he said.

“I tell them that if we put the same effort into being safe in the workplace as I had to put into my rehabilitation, then this kind of stuff doesn’t have to happen.”

Perry said that he enjoyed his sessions in Duncan.

The middle school students are just getting into the workforce so it takes more effort to reach them, he said.

“They were less than excited at the start,” he said, “but once I got into my presentation I sort of silenced them with safety. Then they began to ask questions and we established a good rapport.

The older students are always interested.”

Perry said he has spoken on occasion to big groups in auditorium presentations but really enjoys speaking to individual classes as he was able to this time because it allows him to bring his message closer to the students.

Scottish bard to be celebrated The AOTS Men’s Club’s annual Robbie Burns Night is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 23 starting at 6 p.m. at the Duncan United Church Heritage Hall at 246 Ingram St. The event features a great opportunity to enjoy a night out with friends, celebrating Scotland’s bard in style with a traditional meal and music, the ceremony of the haggis and more.

Cold weather can present health hazards for our dogs. In addition to that, some dogs are more sensitive to the cold, such as: - puppies - elderly dogs - dogs with certain medical conditions, such as thyroid conditions - dogs with limited mobility - dogs with very short coat - very small dogs Extended exposure to cold can cause hypothermia, which is a life-threatening condition. Its symptoms include shivering, shallow breathing, lethargy and weak pulse.

Frostbite most often occurs on the ears, tails, in the scrotum or on the paws. Symptoms include red, pale or grey skin, swelling, or even blisters. Note that these symptoms may be hidden by the fur!

If you suspect that your dog may suffer from frostbite or hypothermia, take your dog to your veterinarian!

Winter Training Practice handling and wiping your dog’s paws. Reward with a treat, first for touching, then lifting, then handling, then wiping a paw. Take it in baby-steps and if the dog wants to pull away, LET HIM. But then, he doesn’t get the treat, of course. Never restrain, but always let him have a choice. Make it easy, so that he is successful, and progress very gradually. If you force him, you’ll just put him off the exercise and break your trust. By giving him the choice, he’ll take ownership of his behaviour and you build trust and a willing participant.

Loose leash walking is important all times of the year, but particularly when the ground might be slippery!

“Leave It” can save your dog’s life if he comes across a puddle of anti-freeze on the ground. “Come” can always be a lifesaver, but particularly if your dog is heading for - literally - thin ice!

Winter Grooming If your dog has a coat that requires clipping, you may want to keep the coat longer in the winter to help keep him warm. Nails may need to be clipped or filed more often if your dog is spending more time indoors, or on soft (snow or mud) walking trails.

John Carr Smith, from Ireland, settled on Cliffs Road in the Queen Margaret’s School area, after a career as a rover and prospector. Neither of these passions released their hold on him, apparently, for he later resumed his travels and, years later, lost his life in a blizzard in Colorado.

many electors when he declared that he was confident of getting the “intelligent” vote. For all that he was, in Evans’s opinion, a nice quiet man.

Scottish-born James Mearns of Cowichan Station was unusual in that he was the only European settler known to practice commercial fishing; he sold barrels of salted salmon for $5 per hundredweight(!) before operating a store at Koksilah in his final years.

In 1929 Evans remembered him as not just a hard-working man (weren’t they all in those days?) but a man with a grievance — “he was always complaining about something”.

His nearest neighbour, who lived on the site of today’s Fairbridge Estate, was Jim Fleming who also came from “the land o’ cakes”. He, too, it seemed, had

sons, was liked by all; which is as much as Evans tells us about him before moving on to William Shearing of Telegraph Road, Cobble Hill whose claim to fame was as “one of the best bridge builders we have ever had in the district”.

Most accomplished of them all, in Evans’s mind, was William Henry Lomas “who has left his impress upon the district equal to that of the Rev. Archdeacon Reece, Joseph Drinkwater and

The Pirates of Penzance, which was nicknamed The Slave of Duty in typical Victorian fashion, is one of a handful of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas that are still popular with both audiences and performers.

Both composer Arthur Sullivan and librettist W.S. Gilbert put their backs into it, wanting to build on the success of their previous opus, H.M.S. Pinafore.

It opened in New York City on New Year’s Eve of 1879 because the show’s owners had been upset by the way the entrepreneurial Yanks simply took over Pinafore without paying any royalties.

But, no matter, Pirates was a hit then and remains one to this day.

Then, as now, stories about the men who sailed under the skull and crossbones were popular, dating back to the early 1800s to such bodice-rippers as Lord Byron’s poem The Corsair.

Gilbert never pulled back from pulling a few legs and had lots of fun in this show. Directors and performers have embroidered on that freedom ever since.

It’s all about Frederic, 21, handsome, and just ready to finish his apprenticeship as a pirate.

He catches the eye of lovely young Mabel and the chase is on, with the tale following the most ridiculous and hilarious twists and turns towards a predictable but no less welcome conclusion.

Foundations awards bursaries to dancers LEXI BAINAS CITIZEN

As a special Christmas gift to some deserving Valley dancers, the Cowichan Valley Performing Arts Foundation on Dec. 15 awarded $3,000 in bursaries to eight local applicants.

Bursary grants ranged from $500 to $200 to applicants from Mill Bay, Cobble Hill, Shawnigan Lake and Duncan, who had requested funding for studio fees for Celtic, hip hop, ballet and modern dance.

The review committee evaluated more than a dozen submissions, according to committee member Sarah Morden.

“Each application is very different. We review each submission very carefully to ensure all criteria are met. It can be a difficult process as, unfortunately, we simply do not yet have the resources to fund the full amounts requested during each intake. We do our best to provide some level of support to every eligible applicant but a lot depends on how much detail, information and passion the applicants put into their submissions,” she said.

Reviewing means ranking each application and assigning a numerical rating based on completed applications with household financial overviews; service membership affiliation; submitted reference letters from instructors; and a personalized application letter from the applicant themselves.

The CVPAF describes itself as “locally founded and the only locally-run not-forprofit foundation in the Cowichan Valley that solely provides funding to children and youth who cannot afford to participate in performing arts activities such as music, theatre, dance and singing.”

They were founded by knowledgeable teachers and others who saw a need.

“We are very unique,” explained foundation president Olivia Boudreau.

“No other charitable foundation offers this type of funding. Often families need just a little help to cover the cost of instrument rentals or competition fees so just a little bit of help can go a long way.”

YOUNG MUSICIAN OF THE WEEK

Cowichan Secondary’s ‘Steel Magnolias’ postponed Cowichan Secondary School drama’s second play of the winter, Steel Magnolias, has been postponed due to illness in the cast.

Always a favourite with audiences, the story features the story of a group of women in northwest Louisiana — Truvy, M’Lynn, Ouiser, Annelle, Clairee and Shelby — and the bond that holds through thick and thin among these surprisingly tough Southerners.

Penned by Robert Harling, it is based on his experience with his sister’s death.

The show will still hit the stage at Quamichan Auditorium at a future date to be determined shortly. Check back in these pages for the new performance schedule.

This production follows the program’s first show, The Odd Couple, which ran earlier in the month.

Its full title includes the words “triple module” but that really doesn’t describe its size and versatility.

Both Boudreau and the group’s past president, Nadene Hill, were impressed with the obvious versatility of the piece of equipment.

Emergency room RN Karen Hill said the big cart, with its see-through wire shelving was particularly useful because contents are instantly visible and the shelves can aligned as needed and even sloped forward.

Formed in 1972, the auxillary originally included members from Cobble Hill, Mill Bay and Shawnigan Lake, which accounts for its name.

The money is raised annually during four major events: a Strawberry Tea at the Cobble Hill annual flower show and a Lemon and Lavender Tea, also in the spring, plus a fall raffle and a fall craft and gift fair.

Since the LBH Auxiliary formed, it has raised over a $100,000 for equipment and care items for CDH and Cairnsmore Place.

In addition, the group has annually awarded a bursary to a student attending Frances Kelsey Secondary School who is choosing a career in the health services field.

This year their funds went to purchase the Triple Par Stor III triple module mobile unit with its dust cover for the Emergency Room at a cost of $4,072.

As well, the auxiliary has in the past given funds to the window refurbishing project at Cairnsmore Place, and contributed toward the cost of equipment purchased by the CDH Foundation.

The LBH Auxiliary is 23 members strong, and they contribute 3,000 to 3,500 hours of volunteer work annually as well as holding all their fundraising efforts.

“Some of us volunteer at blood services, some of us volunteer at the gift shop, some of us volunteer at H.A.T.S., and some of us volunteer at Cairnsmore,” Boudreau said. “What’s amazing is that some of our members are very elderly; the majority are over 80. We tend to go to Cairnsmore a lot.”

Nadene Hill agreed, and added, “Also, when it comes to fundraising a lot of the things they might need are smaller. We can afford to get them. If something is going to be $20,000 that’s where the gift shop and other places are involved.”

It’s an eye-opening statistic, but it’s not news to the many Cowichan Valley families whose lives have been altered by the dementia journey, many of whom will participate at the Investors Group Walk for Memories this Sunday, Jan. 25.

“Women represent 72 per cent of Canadians living with Alzheimer’s disease,” said Jane Hope, the Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s Support & Education Coordinator for Cowichan and the North & Central Island.

“They could be your mothers, wives, sisters, grandmothers or friends.”

That’s why the Society’s annual Alzheimer Awareness Month campaign in January has adopted the theme “The 72%”. It aims to inform women in their 40s and older about the warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, brain health and how the programs and services of the non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C. can help.

More women than men are living with Alzheimer’s disease because they live longer and age is a significant risk factor, Hope said. The risk of dementia doubles every five years after age 65.

Women also account for 70 per cent of family caregivers.

“The disease takes a tremendous toll on these women who eventually provide round-the-clock care. The burden is especially high for women raising families and holding down jobs.”

Though women are disproportionately affected, “Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias affect everyone,” Hope pointed out.

So what can Valley residents do? “Get Walking!” she said.

Residents can take a meaningful stroll on Sunday, Jan. 25.

That’s when the annual Investors Group Walk for Memories comes to the Valley, to raise funds for research and programs for the more than 70,000 people in B.C. who face dementia.

Unpublished authors sought for Cedric Awards A brand-new writing competition has been launched to recognize and encourage the creative talents of British Columbia authors age 50 or better.

The Cedric Literary Awards have been created specifically to attract unpublished B.C. writers of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry.

This is a first-of-its-kind literary awards program in Canada and it is already gathering interest on the part of writers, as well as organizations that support and promote Canadian authors.

The Cedric Literary Awards is the brainchild of Dr. Peter Dale, chairman of Better Than 50, a web-based initiative created to achieve a more connected world for the 50plus demographic.

“The Cedric Literary Awards is a natural extension of what we’ve been doing previously by tapping into the creative talents of B.C. writers who bring a lifetime of experience to their work,” said Dale.

The Cedric Literary Awards will be a juried writing competition with selection panel members drawn from B.C.’s diverse and established writing community. Each of the category winners will receive a monetary prize along with a special memento of their participation in the competition, and a special prize for First Nations storytelling will also be awarded.

“There are so many people in B.C. who have been writing or storytelling all their lives, but perhaps didn’t think anyone would want to read their work, let alone publish it,” said Executive Director Veronica Osborn.

A proposed weekend without spectators in the stands at minor hockey games would be a last resort for the Vancouver Island Amateur Hockey Association in its bid to eliminate verbal abuse, according to president Jim Humphrey.

“This is the last option for people on our board [which includes one member from the Cowichan Valley association]. It’s a plea for help from the majority of parents.

“VIAHA does not want to do a spectator-free weekend.”

The extreme measure would only be pursued, Humphrey said, “if the message gets lost to parents and they don’t help us deal with abusive parents.”

Humphrey believes that the abusive parents are an extreme minority — “maybe two or three per cent” — but that they ruin the game for everybody.

“That’s the hard part about this,” he said. “If we do a weekend like this, we’d be doing it to the 98 per cent of parents that just want to be watching their children play hockey. We’re hoping beyond hope that the 98 per cent of parents see that we need their help. They’ve got to be more than just spectators.”

Some of the Cowichan Valley Capitals’ young guns helped them make up some ground on the Alberni Valley Bulldogs in the battle for the last Island Division playoff spot.

Adam Osczevski and Luke Santerno each scored twice over the weekend, and Darien Craighead, who was gearing up to play in the Canadian Junior Hockey League Prospects Game in Ontario on Tuesday, added one goal as the Caps took three out of four points from the team they are chasing for a postseason berth.

“It was nice to see Luke get rewarded,” head coach Bob Beatty said. “He made a really good play on the second goal [Saturday], and that was a big shorthanded goal in the first period by Adam. He’s been a real workhorse. He’s playing really well, playing the right way, and it pays off.”

The Caps tied the Bulldogs 2-2 at home on Friday, a late penalty helping to decide their fate. A powerplay goal with three and a half minutes left in regulation gave the Bulldogs a tie as the visitors came back from a 2-0 deficit in the third period.

“We played well,” Beatty said. “It would have been nice to win in regulation, but I guess it wasn’t to be. I thought we probably deserved to win.”

Alberni got on the board a minute and a half after Craighead’s goal, then tied the score with three minutes and 29 seconds left, converting an extra-man opportunity after Cowichan defenceman Julien Lepage was sent off for slashing. The teams played five minutes of 4-on-4 overtime, and another five minutes of 3-on-3, but nothing changed on the scoresheet.

Goalie Lane Michasiw made 39 saves over 70 minutes of action in the Cowichan net as the Caps were outshot 41-29.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs opened the scoring less than five minutes into the first period, but Osczevski’s shorthanded marker drew Cowichan even before intermission. Santerno staked the Caps to a lead in the middle frame, and they never looked back. Santerno added an empty-netter, his seventh goal of the season, before the final buzzer.

Michasiw started in goal again, and

stopped 42 of 43 shots. The Caps were again outshot as they mustered 24 on the Alberni net.

“We were outshot, and probably outplayed, in the first period,” Beatty admitted. “Lane definitely gave us a chance to win, and the guys came through for him.

The Caps showed no ill effects from the deadline trade of veteran forward Thomas Gobeil to the Victoria Grizzlies.

In fact, the deal opened up opportunities for other players.

“He’s a game-breaker, no doubt,” Beatty said of Gobeil. “He can certainly be a big impact player. But we have a lot of guys on the team who have the opportunity to step up and play some more minutes and more situations. It’s good to have those players get the experience of playing under pressure now.”

In spite of their success last weekend, the Caps remain six points back of the Bulldogs for the last Island Division playoff spot. Alberni has five games in hand. The Caps are about to play five games over a nine-game span, which could well decide their playoff fate.

“Our work is cut out, but we’re still in there,” Beatty said. “The games keep getting bigger. That five-game stretch will tell the tale. Either we’ll still be in it or we’ll be playing for pride.”

Cowichan will visit the Nanaimo Clippers this Friday, then host the Chilliwack Chiefs at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Next Tuesday, the Caps will be at home to the Powell River Kings at 7 p.m.

Indoor field hockey tournaments on the way The BC Indoor Field Hockey Championships are returning to the Cowichan Valley over the next two weekends.

The U18 tournament will take place in Chemainus this Saturday and Sunday, with the senior women’s tournament at the Island

Savings Centre the following weekend (Jan. 31 and Feb. 1).

The Typhoon, one of two Cowichan Field Hockey entries, won the junior tournament in 2014, while the Tsunami finished fourth.

The Islanders, who also boasted a wealth of local players, won the 2014 senior tournament. That tournament was hosted by the Valley Vixens.

Missed chances haunt LMG in tie KEVIN ROTHBAUER CITIZEN

A strong game by Cowichan LMG wasn’t enough as the team failed to put Nanaimo United away and had to settle for a 1-1 tie after a late goal by a former teammate.

Cowichan head coach Glen Martin admitted he wasn’t surprised by the result based on how his Vancouver Island Soccer League team has performed traditionally against its up-island rivals.

“With our recent history, it kind of went exactly as I thought it would go,” he said.

Cowichan went ahead 1-0 around the 35-minute mark when Steve Scott finished off a give-and-go with Paddy Nelson.

“Steve Scott does very well against Nanaimo,” Martin noted.

The team was comfortable carrying a 1-0 lead into halftime.

“That put us in a good position,” Martin said. “We looked like the better team overall. We were strong defensively.”

Cowichan started the second half well. With Nanaimo pressing, Cowichan just sat back and waited for chances to counterattack.

Unfortunately, they didn’t capitalize on their opportunities. Nelson, in particular, was prevented from scoring by a combination of bad luck and bad decisions.

“We had about five good chances

Matt Arnett took the ball and blazed down the field — “like a man possessed,” in Martin’s words — to score in the 88th minute, leaving Cowichan without

enough time to regain the lead.

Another former Cowichan player, Ryan Andre, who sits second in league scoring behind Nelson, was held without a goal in the contest.

Martin saw shades of his team’s result in the NFC championship game the next day.

“We didn’t put them away,” he said. “It was like Green Bay and Seattle.”

Regardless of the result, Martin was pleased with his team’s performance.

“I was happy with how we played,” he said. “We’re going in the right direction. Team defence first, scoring the first goal; it was unlucky we didn’t finish the game off with a counterattack.”

Martin’s team was also missing a handful of key starters in Dan Cato, Stu Barker, Cooper Barry and captain Jesse Winter, but he didn’t blame the result on that.

“We were a little thin on the bench but the guys worked really hard,” the coach said.

Connor Crichton was picked as Cowichan’s MVP for the match.

Cowichan has one win, three ties and a loss over their last five games. Prior to that, the team had won 10 straight games. Nonetheless, the team can clinch the league with a win over Gorge this Saturday at the Ladysmith turf at 7 p.m.

Last resort in battle against abuse VIAHA PONDERS, From Page 22 Humphrey acknowledges that abusive spectators aren’t just a problem on Vancouver Island, and not just in the sport of hockey. Since word broke about a possible spectator-free weekend, he has heard from governing bodies in other sports: lacrosse, soccer, and even bowling.

“They’ve said, ‘Right on. When you get all this settled down, we need to get together and deal with parents the same way across all sports,’” Humphrey said. “I didn’t realize it was so rampant across all sports.”

VIAHA’s proposal has also attracted media attention from far and wide, and Humphrey doesn’t mind that.

“Any time we can do things to make people aware of an issue that we need some help with, that’s a good thing,” he said.

“We’ve got to fix this game of ours and make it fun for the kids again.”
