Senseless vandalism to Lake Cowichan’s totem pole on Canada Day caused a firestorm of outrage from local residents but

“It was very upsetting,” Chuuchkamalthnii said as he carved in the early morning quiet. “We removed it right away.”

so visitors can watch its progress and learn the stories of the creatures being depicted, will be erected in the centre of the square over the Labour Day weekend.

According to Lake Cowichan RCMP, a report came in on July 1 at 1:45 p.m. that someone had vandalized the carved pole.

Lake Cowichan station boosts the signal LEXI BAINAS CITIZEN

Wednesday, June 17 was a banner day for the Cowichan Valley Community Radio Society.

Finally, under a blistering sun, they achieved a long-held dream as they watched a 70-foot antenna reach skyward at one of the highest points of land in Lake Cowichan.

Volunteers were aloft in a bucket truck, installing the new broadcast antenna and, on the ground, hooking up cabling to the radio shack at the base of the utility pole used as the antenna base.

T he Society has received approval to boost its broadcast output from five watts of power to 50 watts but the operation needed a well-placed antenna to be able to reach out to a new audience.

Now they have it and are hoping listeners as far afield as Glenora will be able to hear their ultra-local programming.

The Society owes its existence to three friends: Ron McKenzie, Karl Dalskog and Brian Simpson.

“The pen hit the napkin and an idea took form: a radio station for the Lake Cowichan Area,” he said.

It all began as an Internet operation, but the fledgling station moved from location to location, building an audience.

It finally found a home in the old Lake Cowichan ambulance/ ranger station building, which had been moved to Wellington Avenue in a three corner swap that also led to the building of the new Lake Cowichan fire hall and the Lake Cowichan Country Grocer.

The radio station’s three found-

ing fathers filled out all the necessary paperwork to obtain a CRTC licence to operate as a low power developmental station and CICV has been on the air ever since, except for the occasional equipment malfunction.

An application to boost the power moved fairly quickly until the group found they also had to deal with Industry Canada, Mackenzie said, as he watched the installation on the antenna.

But this year, a favourable decision from Industry Canada allowed the actual construction of the new antenna and operation of the more powerful transmitter.

The Society credits two very favourable letters of support, one from the Cowichan Valley Regional District, the other from the Lake Cowichan First Nation, in achieving this goal, Bishop said.

Mackenzie, who moved away from Vancouver Island in June, was able to be on hand for the pole raising.

He said he was glad to be leaving the station in such good hands.

“Take care of the baby!” he told his friends and colleagues as he drove away.

Oak pruning in park necessary KEVIN ROTHBAUER CITIZEN

Necessary pruning of one of the red oak trees in Duncan’s Charles Hoey Park will be conducted in a way that will not effect the 39 Days of July summer festival.

The city recently received a report on the health and risk assessment of the four mature red oak trees in the park, which are believed to date to around 1912, when the Duncan Train Station was constructed. The report includes recommendations for mitigating risks and improving the health of the trees.

The northernmost of the four trees has the most concerns, including an area of large dead branches directly above the 39 Days of July stage and seating area.

City staff will begin pruning the tree this Friday at 6 a.m., both to mitigate the risk of branch failure and to avoid interfering with the festival, which has music beginning around 11 a.m.

The crown of the tree will be cleaned of any dead, diseased or weak limbs, and the remainder of the tree will be pruned to reduce the crown by about 25 per cent, with a focus on reducing

end weight on the limbs.

The city will continue monitoring and pruning the tree until it is no longer viable and could be removed, a strategy that will allow the city to plant new trees in the park that can be maintained throughout their lives.

“There are also recommendations for the other three trees, but the state of this particular tree, coupled with the Summer Festival in the Park, it is not advisable to wait,” city chief administrative officer Peter de Verteuil said. “The City will proceed with the remainder of the recommendations when appropriate.”

An automated external defibrillator donated by BC Public Access to Defibrillation has been installed in the basement of Duncan City Hall where it will be ready to serve visitors to events at City Square.

“With so many events occurring in City Square we are very

Illegal fires in remote spots a problem at Lake Cowichan It’s just too dry for fires of any kind, Lake Cowichan police are warning both residents and visitors to the Valley.

“We did respond to a fireworks complaint last night,” Sgt. Wes Olsen said Thursday.

“I know it’s kind of understandable for Canada Day but we want to remind people that we are in the midst of a coastal fire ban. Fireworks can easily set off a fire.”

Open fires and campfires are also forbidden, he said.

“The area is tinder dry. Even the smallest spark could set off a fire at this point. It’s such a danger for any of the communities in the Cowichan Valley.

People don’t realize that even if they just flick a cigarette out of a vehicle window, it’s going to cause a fire. It doesn’t take

much,” he said.

There is another aspect to starting a fire that is perhaps not generally known, he said.

“Even if they don’t purposely want to start it, if people can be found to have carelessly caused a fire, it still can be considered arson and they can be considered criminally and financially responsible for the cost of dealing with that fire,” he said.

“That’s something a lot of people don’t realize. If I’m burning rubbish in my yard because I want to get rid of old branches or old grass and that fire got away and ended up damaging or threatening the neighbours or burning something down, even lighting the fire without purposefully meaning to cause a problem, it can still be considered an arson,” Olsen said.

fires are being ignored by some boaters.

“Since the fire ban came into effect last weekend, we have had the odd complaint of fires on the beach along Cowichan Lake.

“People think: we’re going to be okay if we just go out by the water and have a fire. But it’s not okay. And it’s generally in remote locations that are only accessible by water. They think the police can’t get out there to them,” Olsen said. “Well we do have a boat, for one, and we can find them and, two, even having a fire in a remote location like that makes it harder to react to. Those areas are not easily accessed by the fire department or the crews that need to get in there.

“The bottom line is: please don’t light fires or fireworks,” the sergeant said.

RCMP take on impaired driving in July Police across B.C., including the RCMP detachments that serve the Cowichan Valley, will be cracking down extra hard on possible drunk drivers this month.

July is Impaired Driving Awareness Month, and that means more CounterAttack road checks. Drivers can expect to see the checkpoints both night and day as police try to catch impaired drivers, or deter anyone from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

In partnership with ICBC, the North Cowichan/Duncan detachment’s Municipal Traffic Section, Crime Reduction Unit and other uniformed officers will set impaired driving investigations as their priority for the month of July and for the

rest of the summer.

Alexa’s Bus, a new mobile road safety unit named for four-year-old Alexa Middelaer, who was killed by an impaired driver in Delta in 2008, will stop by the Cowichan Valley this month to help the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP and South Island Traffic Services take impaired drivers off the road.

“Specially trained drug recognition experts will also be called upon to assess those drivers who may be using a combination of alcohol and drugs, prescribed or otherwise,” RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Krista Hobday said.

“If your summer activities involve alcohol, plan ahead for a safe ride home,” ICBC road safety coordinator Kate Woochuk said. “Arrange a designated driver, call a taxi, or take transit. Share the responsibility of being the designated driver this summer to help your friends and family get home safely.”

“On average, 13 people are killed in crashes involving impaired driving on Vancouver Island every year and 42 across the province,” Hobday added.

Our downtowns need more trees, not fewer

Y

ou know how on a hot day when you enter the woods the temperature goes down about five degrees once you are under the leafy canopy?

That’s why we need trees in our downtown urban areas.

Desperately.

We’ve had some arguments on the subject in our letters to the editor of late, with some folks arguing that trees in downtown Duncan and along the Trans Canada Highway corridor should be taken down, with some even arguing that nothing should be planted to take their place.

We could not disagree more with this argument.

There’s the issue of heat and oxygen (that the trees and other greenery provide) counterbalancing to a certain extent the oven effect of pavement and blacktop.

Nowhere is worse in the summer than a treeless parking lot under the baking sun. We certainly don’t want our downtown streets to resemble that in any way.

Consider those walking around on summer days — wouldn’t you rather walk in the shade of some trees, or be able to sit in a patch of shade for a few

moments when the heat gets too much? That’s what trees are for.

Then there’s just the sheer visual that trees provide.

They are a balm for the eye that can help draw people in to stop in town — definitely a desirable quality.

Sure, we have to prune them to keep them from the power lines and just to keep them from growing out of control, but they are absolutely a stunning attraction when in bloom, lending a beauty to our stretch of the TCH it never otherwise achieves.

We’d rather see the power lines move underground than the

trees eliminated.

Consider also that old neighbourhoods with tree-lined streets or boulevards are almost invariably more desirable, expensive and sought-after.

Also a desirable quality for our downtown.

Watering in the heat of a summer like we’re experiencing this year, pruning and other maintenance is a small price to pay for what trees bring to our lives in urban areas.

We need more of them, not less.

We urge our governments to keep planting.

Large houses towering over parkland and a large private sewer system only metres away from a fish bearing creek?

I ask the CVRD/EASC directors to respect the precautionary principle and the Area G/ Saltair OCP “high level of environmental protection of Stocking Creek”, “rural residential nature of the area”, “OCP does not support the concept of density averaging (high density)” and the peaceful nature of a sanctuary that the Saltair residents and other Stocking Creek Park users value so highly.

I would like to express my gratitude to Rob Douglas and Roger Hart for writing the series of articles on Cowichan’s economic future. Thank you for beginning what I hope becomes a meaningful discussion.

As an owner of a small construction company here specializing in working with heavy timber, I’d like to offer a few thoughts on how we might take the “buy local” concept to the next level.

An acquaintance from Northern California has been involved in a project of the Yuba Watershed Institute called the ‘Inimim Forest. The agreement reached around an 1,800 acre parcel between the institute and the Bureau of Land Management “calls for the restoration of the ‘Inimim Forest to an old-growth condition, management of its timber on an ecologically sustainable yield basis, and protection of wildlife, cultural, historical, recreational, educational and scenic values of this forest.”

With a small grant, lots of fortitude on the part of local politicians, and a bunch of volunteer work, this project is successful beyond expectations 20-plus years on. Using the ‘Inimim as an example, I wonder if there is opportunity to pursue such a plan here, perhaps beginning with our municipal forests — advancing the management plans they already have in place? It seems to me our local government could take a leadership role in preserving the environment while incentivizing the creation of good paying jobs sustainably harvesting, then locally processing the wood to finished goods. Might we find a win-win lurking in our woods?

Don’t allow high density housing next to park Is the CVRD/EASC going to vote to change the peace and tranquillity of Stocking Creek Park, Area G/Saltair forever?

Other communities are demanding treed buffer zones between developments and public parks.

In Area G/Saltair a rezoning for a high density housing development will end up with 7.5 metre/25 foot high houses on the bank and slope towering over the park.

This rezoning is not just about high density in a rural area whose OCP is against high density, it is also about the impact on Stocking Creek Park.

Why should the other CVRD/ EASC areas care?

A precedent will be set by this rezoning and this can impact other CVRD/EASC areas in the future.

Protestations of Saltair ratepayers unconvincing Re: letter to the editor “Hockin’s accusations against ratepayers not held up by fact”, May 29.

First of all Mr.Silins, I was the person that gave your wife a copy of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation document to pass along to you. You're welcome, but you really should read the entire document, attention to pages 4 and 19.

The sentence prior to your quote reads, "For example, a women's rights groups that claims to represent all women is offensive to those who might not share in its core views", (then your line).

And yes, I did read the SDRA mission statement. Standard boilerplate document. However, your group fails to "review and make representation respecting taxation and fees for service in Area G, (2-g). I have yet to see any statement or objection to the continued increases in property taxes.

Second point, your AGM. The flyer announcing the meeting clearly said, April 23/15 SDRA business meeting for members and new members from 7 p.m. to 7:40 p.m.

All residents of Saltair invited 7:40 to 9 p.m. So, contrary to your statement, non-members were not invited to the secret session 7 p.m. to 7:40 p.m.

Third point. You state "at no time has SDRA supported new tax levies". I refer you to minutes of your March 27/14 AGM, 35 members present, and the minutes show you were present.

Presentation by Area G Director Mel Dorey, the topic was the old school property. "Short term loan, costing homeowners $20 a year per $100,000 assessed value". Mel posed the question (non-binding), "How many people are in

The community is well aware of who the members of SDRA are, and you cannot separate one from the other while an active member, any more than Christy Clark can say she is not involved in politics after 4 p.m. If there is even the slightest sniff of conflict, then it is conflict of interest. (Page 2 Canadian taxpayer report) Finally, if Mr Silins is sincere about openness and transparency, then all minutes and the "newsie" should be readily available on the taxpayer funded sunnysaltair.ca website. Until then, I still call SDRA a secret society.

Solar panels coming to a Cowichan Valley Regional District facility near you?

In January Peter Nix and the Cowichan Carbon Busters requested that the CVRD support the proliferation of solar installations in the Cowichan Valley, both philosophically and financially.

The matter was handed to CVRD board chair Jon Lefebure to create a report on what direction the regional district could take with regard to solar.

Lefebure came back to the board with four recommendations, chief among them that the district look into the possibility of creating a high-profile solar demonstration project on a CVRD building, and that the project include options for community buy-in.

Other recommendations from his report included thanking Nix and the Carbon Busters for bringing their plan to the CVRD and supporting the CVRD’s goal of taking action on climate change.

It was also recommended that staff review the building code to identify any changes that may be required to facilitate solar energy installations, and support staff efforts to incorporate a Climate Action Plan into the Regional Integrated Planning Strategy, using work already done by municipal partners where possible.

The board unanimously supported all of Lefebure’s recommendations.

Nix and the Carbon Busters had suggested the

CVRD could be more directly financially involved in helping to fund household solar installation in the region through a provincial carbon tax and revolving loan fund, among other options.

“I didn’t find this to be a viable model,” Lefebure said, explaining that the regional district has no say over carbon taxes, and setting up loan funds could be problematic.

However, “climate change demands action,” he said, and it’s clearly time to act. Climate action also reduces costs he pointed out.

“It’s very obvious right now that it’s seen as a major opportunity to reduce reliance on fossil fuels,” Lefebure said of solar.

Solar can be a good complement to hydro power, he said, and can help meet peak demand if coupled with storage systems, the technology for which is moving fast.

Tesla Motors chief Elon Musk launched a new storage battery for solar installations just this spring.

Lefebure talked about several solar installation projects, including the one on his own house comprised of 17 panels.

They cost $10,700 he said, and are one year old.

In that time he’s gotten a 5.8 per cent return on the investment.

The formula for commercial installations is different, he cautioned, with a lesser rate of return, but “I definitely believe in the economics of it,” he said.

Staff will now examine opportunities for solar within the CVRD and report back to the board at a future date.

Duncan goes carbon neutral KEVIN ROTHBAUER CITIZEN

The City of Duncan has been joined by the Town of Ladysmith, the Islands Trust, the District of Highlands and the District of Ucluelet in going carbon-neutral for 2014 through the Cowichan Valley-based Community Carbon Marketplace.

The municipalities neutralized 646 tonnes of carbon through credits bought on the marketplace, and invested more than $16,000 into the local low-carbon economy.

An initiative of the non-profit Cowichan Energy Alternatives, the CCM provides a local approach for municipal governments to lower their carbon footprint. Businesses that were rewarded for reducing their greenhouse gas emissions through the CCM include the Cowichan Bio-Diesel Co-op, the Island Bio-Diesel Co-op, Greasecycle Inc., and Net Zero Waste in Abbotsford.

The five communities that have gone carbon-neutral through the CCM are among 178 of the 182 communities in B.C. that have made a commitment to carbon neutrality.

Crofton Mill back up and running after shutdown

Demands for higher distracted driving fines

Catalyst Paper Corporation’s Crofton operation was back up and running June 29 following a brief shutdown, the company said.

But the stoppage was not without cost.

The company announced Monday that “due to operating issues that have been fully resolved, the Crofton mill has incurred production losses of approximately 8,600 tonnes of pulp and 8,600 tonnes of paper in the month of June.

These production losses will not impact current customer orders but will reduce second quarter earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of approximately $5 to 6 million.”

The company also stated that “no health or environmental issues occurred during this period, and the mill has returned to production capacity.”

Halfway through a consultation on distracted driving policy, the vast majority of B.C. residents who have responded want fines increased.

Justice Minister Suzanne Anton says thousands of people have participated on the B.C. government’s consultation website, and more than 90 per cent want stronger action to stop people talking or texting on their phones while they’re behind the wheel. The issue now is how high the fines should go.

“British Columbians are also telling us they want to see tougher escalating penalties for repeat offenders, because right now some people see the $167 ticket as the cost of doing business,” Anton said Tuesday. “We need to stop that.”

Anton said she doesn’t intend to follow Ontario’s lead and put the fine up to $1,000 for repeat offenders, but an increase will be coming within a year.

Comments on the website www.gov.bc.ca/distracteddriving continue to debate the merits of seizing cellphones from drivers,

but Anton reiterated that option is not being considered.

Suspending licences or impounding vehicles of repeat offenders is on the table, however. Saskatchewan impounds the vehicle for a week if the driver gets two distracted driving tickets less than a year apart.

The consultation continues

until July 16. Participants are asked to reply to nine questions.

The crowd-sourcing exercise has its weaknesses. Only five per cent of respondents have come from the B.C. Interior, and Anton said younger people are also under-represented.

The province attributes 88 deaths to distracted driving last year, second to speeding and ahead of impaired driving.

“We heard about it from Aaron Hamilton, the operations manager for the Lake Cowichan First Nation,” Sgt. Wes Olsen said.

“He reported that an unknown person or persons had used a pencil and drew or wrote on the totem pole being carved at the park by the Cowichan Lake library.

“Apparently what had happened was that the carver had left the area for a break and when he returned he noted it. Well, you have to wonder where some people’s heads are when they do things like that,” Olsen said.

“You can’t teach common sense. It sounds like a kid. Basically the police do have a file open on it and we’re actively investigating for an offence which would be construed as mischief under $5,000.”

“We’d be interested in speaking with any witnesses or in being able to track down the culprit or culprits who did it. We presume the carver took a lunch break.

“Luckily the damage was in pencil and could be taken care of fairly easily but the band is doing this openly so the public can be able to sit and observe and see how the work gets done.

For somebody to do something so childish and malicious is unfortunate,” the sergeant said.

The reaction from the community was immediate when Melanie Livingstone (Hamilton) posted about it on the Cowichan Lake Communities Grapevine Facebook page, calling it “total disrespect to our elders/carvers that are dedicating their time to this project!!!” particularly because they have been working on steadily during the brutal heat wave that has been hitting the area.

Others agreed, with many sharing emotions like “mortified” and “appalled” at the attack on a project that is the subject of so much local pride.

Plaques celebrate Duncan’s business past LEXI BAINAS CITIZEN

Folks walking through beautiful downtown Duncan these days will notice something extra has been added to the local scene.

Some buildings have acquired plaques.

They are all part of a joint project by the Cowichan Valley Museum & Archives and the Duncan Business Improvement Association titled Heritage in Duncan: Early Businesses.

The DBIA has given the museum another opportunity to exhibit history beyond its home in the Duncan train station, moving history out into the streets of downtown Duncan.

The new signs feature stories and images of pioneer businesses and heritage buildings.

This plaque talks about Dobson’s Paint Ltd. The DBIA commissioned the project to raise awareness and foster excitement about local history.

Each sign provides a brief history of the site and incorporates images of both archival photographs and related documents such as invoices, advertisements, and business cards from the museum’s

collection.

Museum curator Kathryn Gagnon, asked about this latest installation, said “We have a lovely small museum in the train station but our display space is limited. I’m delighted that the BIA has given us this opportunity to share even more stories from Duncan’s historical record.”

MaryAnn Hartley of the DBIA said that Al Scholz of the City of Duncan’s works department was responsible for placing the plaques.

“He was wonderful. He took this on as a personal project,” she said, pointing out that mounting some of the signs, like the one attached to bricks outside Dobson’s on Kenneth Street, involved some ingenuity, but Scholz was up to the challenge.

• The City of Duncan shared a little love on its Facebook page last week, crediting its employees with a bright idea.

“It’s time for the annual downtown power-wash cleanup which typically involves hosing down all the sidewalks in the core as well as City Square. Due to the lack of rain, coupled with the dust from the Canada Avenue/Ingram Street upgrades, the downtown core is pretty dirty,” officials shared.

“In an effort to conserve water, resourceful City crew members came up with an alternate plan. Rather than use a deluge gun which is a large volume water hose, they experimented with great results doing a pre-washing blow with the leaf blower,” they said. “By doing this in advance and effectively removing all the loose material first, they are able to then follow with only the low volume pressure wash guns reducing water consumption from 2,000 gallons per day down to less than 500, a 75 per cent savings. Kids everywhere are being invited to visit their local library to read, build, craft and create some fun at this year’s Summer Reading Club. The theme for 2015, Build It, encourages children ages 0-12 to visit their local library branch this summer to help them build their reading skills.

Registration is free at your local branch or by visiting virl.bc.ca/kids. Summer Reading Club officially kicks off on July 2 and runs until Aug. 22.

Children registered receive a free Summer Reading Club package with goodies including a reading record, a bookmark, a VIRL tattoo, stickers and a tape measure. Every time a child (or guardian) fills in seven lines of their reading record, they are entered into a weekly prize draw.

Readers who finish their reading record will be eligible to receive a special Summer Reading Club medal and be entered into a grand prize draw.

This summer at Vancouver Island Regional Library, the Summer Reading Club also coincides with a new program offered by the library called Read Down Your Fines. Children participating in Summer Reading Club will have the opportunity to remove any fines they may have by reading them down. For every reading record page a child completes during Summer Reading Club, they are eligible to have up to $5 in fines (up to $35 total) removed from their library card. The Read Down Your Fines program was approved by the board of trustees in 2014 as another way to encourage children to visit their library and continue reading.

Storytime opens pages at Kin Park What do you get when you take good books, kids, soil and seeds and mix them together?

Storytime at the KinPark Youth Urban Farm.

For the third summer in a row, the Vancouver Island Regional Library and the KinPark Youth Urban Farm are teaming together to host a free children’s storytime at the park geared for 0-5 year olds (all ages are welcome however).

This program is part of the library’s Summer Reading Club whereby kids receive a special kit to keep track of their reading and are awarded a collectible medal if they complete their reading log.

For six Tuesdays starting July 7, from 10:3011:30 a.m., storytime starts with a fun story in the shade of the trees followed by a garden-themed activity for little ones such as planting seeds, learning about worms, or a garden scavenger

Free StrongStart program in Duncan A free, drop-in StrongStart program will be available in Duncan’s Centennial Park again this summer, thanks to a collaboration between the Cowichan Valley School District and Parkside Academy.

Families and caregivers can enjoy the program Tuesdays to Fridays, from 9 a.m. to noon starting July 2 and continuing until Aug. 21.

Strongstart is an early learning program for preschool-aged children who are accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

A qualified early childhood educator leads activities, including stories, music, art and crafts to help children grow socially, in language development, and literacy.

This summer, children and families are invited to the park’s picnic area to play, learn, discover and have fun.

It’s also a great chance to get the kids outside to connect with nature in a well-equipped local park that’s right on the edge of downtown.

“We are so happy to offer quality early learning activities for families in such a community oriented park,” Parkside director Adriana Soler said. “We are excited to engage in play amongst the natural environment and really get to know our community and the wonders this great green space can offer.”

Who recognizes his name today?

CHRONICLES Yet he was widely known and highly regarded by T.W. Paterson his contemporaries, if his funeral in June 1888 is any measure.

Word of his death by drowning in Baynes Sound was delivered by the steamer Cariboo-Fly and “spread like wildfire”. Coal baron Robert Dunsmuir dispatched the S.S. Pilot to take the railway contractor’s remains to Nanaimo. When the Pilot warped alongside Johnson’s wharf, she was met by several hundred people who followed the hearse to the Albert Street residence of the deceased’s in-laws, the Van Houtens.

The funeral, conducted two days later with the rites of Ashlar Lodge No. 3, A.F. & A.M., was equally well attended.

In short, Walter E. Blackett was “universally respected and honoured by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance, either as friend or employer”. His tragic death, at age 34, occurred while he was overseeing construction of the bridges and trestles for the Dunsmuirs’ Union Colliery railway line.

Robert Gibson, his assistant and timekeeper, told a harrowing account of the accident that claimed Blackett’s life. It all began early Friday

morning, June 15, with Blackett’s telling him that they had to meet the steamer Dunsmuir off today’s Royston to take delivery of materials and supplies.

It was raining so heavily that they left the other men in camp, proceeded to the beach, launched a dory and rowed out to an anchored sailboat with which they met the Dunsmuir.

After transferring four tons of hardware and supplies, they headed back to shore and the steamer headed south. Their sailboat, it seems, was overloaded for the stormy conditions, as Blackett remarked that he didn’t think it “would hold till we got to the shore”. But they had no choice but to continue until within a mile and a-half of their landing place.

By this time, their dory, trailing astern, had been swamped and overturned, and it was obvious that if they attempted to land in the raging surf they, too, would be upset.

Blackett changed course for Comox but the weakened rudder failed so he attempted to steer with an oar. Off Hart’s Point, however, they were swamped. “As she was sinking,” Gibson “grabbed a box of crackers to keep me up, but Blackett told me to grab an oar and jump.

I did so, and [he] did the same. The boat then went straight down, the top of the mast being only a foot or so out of the water when we saw it last.”

They struck out for shore, more than a mile distant, with Blackett “all the time encouraging me and directing me how to keep the oar to the waves”. They proceeded in this manner “for a long time,” Blackett in advance until, riding a huge wave, they could see men running along the beach.

About this time Blackett kicked off his gumboots and Gibson called out to ask him how he was doing. In response the contractor asked Gibson if he thought he could make it and, assured that he could, replied, “God help you — I can’t — I’m done.”

Minutes later, Gibson touched bottom, staggered ashore and collapsed. Revived by workers who’d witnessed their capsizing but had no boat with which to go to their rescue, he was told that it had taken them “a quantity of stimulants and two hours steady work” to revive him.

There was no helping Blackett, to whom Gibson said he owed his life for having encouraged and directed him how to keep afloat for three torturous hours. Word of the tragedy had brought Blackett’s workers from camp — some in their stockinged feet as they hadn’t taken time to put on their boots. DEBORAH LEE GOFFIC (nee Thompson) Dec. 29, 1964 to June 25, 2015.

It is with great sadness that our family has to announce the passing of Deborah Lee Goffic (nee Thompson) on June 25, 2015, at the Prince Rupert General Hospital, at the age of 50.

Deb fought almost 5 years against ovarian cancer. Her will to live and her strength throughout all the treatments and surgeries that she had to endure was an inspiration to all who knew and loved her. She is now in a better place with her brother Michael who passed in 2008. Deb leaves behind her daughter Chantelle (Darin), and son whom she just recently met after having to give him up for adoption 33 years ago Scott (Rebecca) Maguire, her grandchildren who she would have spoiled rotten but didn't get the chance to meet.

Her boyfriend Bill Sutherland who was by her side from the day she got sick until the moment that she took her last breath; her parents Lee and Mike Haylock of Duncan, BC and Dick and Wati Thompson of Bakersfield, Calfornia; her brothers Jim (Jackie) Thompson of Fort Vermillion, AB, Ken (Michelle) Thompson of Austin, Texas and sister Michelle (Dave) Calder of Vernon, BC, and many nieces and nephews who she loved very much. As well as many friends that were a source of comfort and encouragement to Deb, they too will feel a whole in their heart. The following poem was something that gave Deb comfort when times were rough during the last few years: 'Some days I can be strong, I can be weak.

I can be proud, I can be meek I can be gentle, or I can be tough.

I can explode when I've had enough.

Sometimes I laugh, sometimes I cry.

Sometimes I lose, but I always will try.

I always get up when I get knocked down.

And make a smile, out of any frown.

I hope that God likes me, the day that we meet.

If only for a chance, to sit at His feet.

And be by His side, year after year.

While all the bad things just disappear.

So when life gets tough, and it's hard to be strong. I'll never forget... Heaven is where I belong.

Diane Isobel Paisley Diane Isobel Paisley of Cobble Hill, B.C. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our wife and mother. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 1, 2015.

Born August 3, 1937 in Prince Rupert, B.C. She was the daughter of the late William and Nessy Stone.

She is survived by her husband of 27 years Kenneth John Paisley, her sister Freida and husband Fred Hutcheon.

Her two daughters Valerie Boston, husband Murray, Janet Cardinal, husband Malcolm, son Malcolm Raven and wife Mary-Ellen. Step Children Kim and Jim Ethier , Ken Paisley Jr , Robin Paisley, Randy and Brandy Paisley, Cory and Caroline Paisley, Vanessa and James Henderson, 25 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.

She was a snowbird going to Palm Springs California every winter. She enjoyed dinner party’s and dancing with their friends, loved to read, play cards, also camping for many years at Sprout Lake.

She will be sadly missed by all.

The family would like to thank Dr. Tannis Morris and all of the staff of Chemainus Health Care Centre for their wonderful care of mom (Joyce) over the past 4 ½ years.

Samuel David RUBENSTEIN (Dave) January 2, 1948 to June 22, 2015 Dave, born in London, England, passed away peacefully at Cowichan District Hospital after a brief courageous battle with cancer. He leaves behind his loving wife of 19 years, Bonnie; step-son Bobby Dubois (Rosanne), grandson Samuel; and stepgrandchildren David and Nicholas. Dave was predeceased by his parents Norman and Millicent Rubenstein.

Dave was a fan of all sports. He was a huge fan of football (soccer), an avid Boston Bruins fan, as well as being a proud member of Red Sox Nation!

He had a love for harness racing and was part owner of a horse named after him – “Dave’s Showboat�. In recent years Dave’s passionate love of tennis grew. He became well-known for his photos in the tennis world, travelling to England numerous times as an accredited reporter/photographer to cover a tournament in Eastbourne. He smoothly interviewed a number of the top-ranking tennis stars. Dave also had a monthly tennis column in the Citizen newspaper called “Love 40�.

Dave had a long career in radio and newspaper. He started working at the Cowichan Valley Citizen on December 14, 1985 when the newspaper was still in its infancy, and spent the past 29 years working as an advertising sales representative. His voice was one that no one could ever forget. His “deep mellow tones� (as he preferred to say) were heard on a number of radio stations, including CKAY; including the play by play for the Cowichan Valley Capitals for a number of years.

IN DAVE’S OWN WORDS: “I have been in the media since 1969 – radio, television and print, and been at the Citizen newspaper in Duncan for 29 years. I have broadcast over 500 junior hockey games, done two NHL exhibition games, and interviewed Muhammad Ali on the phone in 1972 when he fought George Chuvalo in Vancouver. I’ve covered a number of international events including the bombings in London ‌ most solemn story I ever witnessed. I am quite an exceptional photographer: in June 2012 I covered the Aegon International Tennis Tournament in Eastbourne England. Many of my photos have gone worldwide. I covered three tournaments in 2014. My Google tennis page, which I started in January 2014 is at 96,500 views! Two tennis players have taken my photos, and I hope that will branch out further.

I really find this new vocation in my media career a fabulous experience! I’ve made many new friends because of it.�

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 5, 2015 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Duncan Community Lodge Hall (formerly the Moose Lodge), 2244 Moose Road, Duncan, BC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be left to assist with Bonnie’s finances; a donation box will be at the memorial service.

Young Vancouver Canucks hopefuls will be under the microscope starting this Friday as the NHL team holds its annual prospects development camp at Shawnigan Lake School.

Prospects ranging from recent draft picks to undrafted college free agents will take the ice at Shawnigan’s new arena from July 3-9. On July 10, the players will return to the Mainland to do the traditional Grouse Grind hike.

All on-ice practices are open to the public. The roster for the camp had not been released at press time, but last year’s camp featured all seven 2014 draft picks, including first-rounders Jake Virtanen and Jared McCann, as well as other prospects like Cole Cassels, Brendan Gaunce, Bo Horvat and Hunter Shinkaruk.

Among the highlights of the week at Shawnigan are a three-on-three tournament and barbecue at the school on Tuesday evening. The tournament, which is open to the public, begins at 5 p.m., and

The Valley was represented by two Cowichan Field Hockey Association teams, as well as athletes on B.C. provincial teams and other participating clubs.

A Cowichan team won the gold medal in the U17 girls division for the fourth time in the last five years, beating seven other squads, including the third-place U15 BC Blue team that featured Valley girls Jenna Berard and Jillian Wallace, and the fifth-place U15 BC White team with Shon Lumb, Hanna Murray and Angela Ramwell.

According to coach Steph Yeats, hard work by all of the players and a hat trick

by Sophia Murray helped propel the Cowichan U17 team to gold.

Yeats felt her team’s best performance came in their 3-2 victory over BC Blue as they got two goals from Annika Kushner and Marina Ellison potted the winner in the dying seconds to send the team to the final.

The final against the Polar Bears was a close contest. Hannah Craig put Cowichan ahead first, but the Polar Bears drew even before the end of the first half. With three minutes to go, Ellison came through in the clutch again, and the Cowichan defence held strong for the remainder of the game.

“As a coach I was very proud of my team our defence was amazing, midfield was incredible and forwards always giving 100 per cent effort throughout,” she said, adding a shout-out to Mariah Ketch who broke her thumb in the first game but became her team’s biggest supporter.

Another Cowichan team, coached by Jamie Goodman and Ian Anderson, claimed the bronze medal in the U14 girls division. The Cowichan U14 team, which hadn’t played together prior to the India Club tournament, placed second in their pool before winning the final 4-1.

Chelsey Cleemoff was the lone Cowichan product on the India Club Lightning team that won the U21 women’s division. The second-place U18 BC Blue team included Valley players Sara Goodman, Sara Lowes and Robin Fleming, and Shawnigan Lake School graduate Casey Crowley, and the fourth-place U18 BC White team included Brittany Smith and Emma Dame.

The BC Blue team finished first in their pool, then lost the final in a shootout with the Lightning.

In the U21 men’s division, goaltender Toby Owen helped the Red Devils club team to gold, beating out a field that included the second-place Ontario U21 and the U.S. National U21 team, who placed third.

Up next for the B.C. provincial teams are the national championships. The U15 squads will compete at the U16 Nationals in Brampton, Ont. on July 28-Aug. 1, and the U18 teams will compete at the U18 Nationals in Surrey on Aug. 5-9. Fleming, Smith and Sara Goodman will follow that up with Field Hockey Canada’s junior development squad camp on Aug. 11-21.

The midget B Cowichan Valley Thunder wrapped up the regular-season on Tuesday evening with a close loss to the Peninsula Warriors.

The Thunder, who finished fourth in the Island midget B division, lost 9-7 to the first-place Warriors, but didn’t go down without a fight. Miles Brooks put Cowichan on the board first, and after 20 minutes, the Thunder held a 4-3 edge. The Warriors clawed their way back, however, and it was 6-6 at the end of the second period. Peninsula pulled ahead in the third, but Cowichan refused to give up, and Nathan Clark scored with 42 seconds left on the clock to get his team within two goals.

Boosting the Thunder in the regular-season finale were a trio of bantam call-ups: goalie Tayton Joe and runners Kurtis Smith and Brendon McDill.

The Thunder will open the Island playoffs on Saturday against the same Peninsula Warriors.

After making his way through minor lacrosse to the college, senior and professional ranks, Cowichan Valley product Tyson Roe is hoping to make his international debut this fall.

The 6-foot-10, 255-pound behemoth has been invited to play for his ancestral homeland of England at the World Indoor Lacrosse Championship in Syracuse, New York this September.

“It’s very exciting,” Roe said. “Obviously you grow up and you want to play for Canada, but just playing in the tournament is awesome.”

The English management contacted Roe through the National Lacrosse League’s Calgary Roughnecks, who sent out an email to everyone on their roster saying England was looking for eligible players.

A few emails later, and Roe was as good as signed.

“My grandma is English, so as soon as they emailed me I got excited because I knew that was one of the things you need,” Roe said. “I jumped on the opportunity to email him back.”

Roe’s paternal grandmother was born in England but came to Canada when she was still quite young. He’s looking forward to the possibility of her seeing him in action if the tournament is televised or live-streamed online.

“She’s usually pretty supportive of lacrosse,” said Roe, who is currently playing for the Western Lacrosse Association’s Nanaimo Timbermen. “She’s a Shamrocks fan, but when I do play, she cheers for me.

As long as I do well, I think she’s happy.”

“I think we need to win seven of our last 10 games to make the playoffs,” Roe said.

“It will be hard, but I think we can do it.”

Roe was the Roughnecks’ first pick in the 2014 NLL draft and spent last season on the practice roster. He’s hoping to return to the club next season and crack the lineup.

“The GM said he wants me back, and I want to go back; it was an awesome experience in Calgary,” Roe said. “Last season was great, even though I was on the practice roster. It was unreal.”

In order to get to Syracuse, Roe will have

to scrape together $3,500, which will cover everything from flights and accommodations to gloves and jerseys. Sport Chek has already chipped in with $1,000, and Roe is hoping to hear from other companies about sponsorships. In the meantime, he has set up a crowdfunding page at gofundme.com/xw3k74mc for any other supporters who want to help out.

Roe’s younger brother, Jeremy, who started the season as captain of the junior A Nanaimo Timbermen, was traded last week to the Brampton Excelsiors of the Ontario junior A league. The T-Men are out of the BCJALL playoffs, while the Excelsiors are in third place in Ontario with hopes for a serious playoff run.
