A timely tip about a drug transaction led to the arrest of four youths in Duncan’s Centennial Park last Thursday. The North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP had been fielding many calls about drug dealing in the park, and made several efforts to combat the problem, with results they admit have been “hit and miss.” Last Thursday, however, they were able to nab a quartet of young people red-handed, when a tipster called the police while a deal was going down. “Timing is everything,” said Const. John Taylor, who headed up the investigation. “The youth that do gather in the park only do so for short periods of time and are then gone again. We appreciate the efforts made by residents and park users to keep us informed of the goings-on at this park and other areas in our community that should be free of this type of activity.”
The arrested kids ranged in age from 14 to 17. Their parents and guardians were called to the detachment office to speak with Taylor and the sergeant on duty. Three of the young people, all boys, were released to their families without charges. A fourth suspect, a 17-year-old girl, was found in possession of marijuana, which was prepackaged and labeled for sale, as well as a scale and grinder used to portion and process drugs, cash, bongs, and other containers with drug residue. The 14-year-old boy arrested was found with a container that had been used for cocaine. The female suspect is scheduled to appear in federal court on May 26. She has been released in the interim but has been restricted from using the park. Police plan to make sure the park, is family friendly this spring and summer. See FACILITIES, Page 5
