Appeals of SIA soil permit dismissed NOT OVER: opponents ANDREA RONDEAU CITIZEN

The provincial Environmental Appeal Board has dismissed appeals that sought to prevent Cobble Hill Holdings from bringing contaminated soil to the South Island Aggregates site in the Shawnigan Lake watershed.

“We’re feeling devastated in the community and in shock and totally dismayed with the decision,” said Cowichan Valley Regional District director for Shawnigan Lake Sonia Furstenau from Victoria, where she was busy talking to MLAs about the issue.

Cobble Hill Holdings was given a Ministry of Environment permit in 2013 to import millions of tonnes of contaminated soil to gradually fill a quarry they are mining on a Stebbings Road property.

That permit was appealed by the CVRD, the Shawnigan Residents Association, John and Lois Hayes and Richard O. Sanders.

These opponents are worried that the soil could leach chemicals into the Shawnigan Lake watershed.

Dakova Square narrowly gets green light KEVIN ROTHBAUER CITIZEN

Dakova Square went through the final phase of approval from city council on Monday evening, but some councillors remain opposed to the downtown Duncan development.

In a 4-3 vote, council approved the development permit for the five-storey, 36-unit mixed residential and commercial structure at the intersection of Canada Avenue and Government Street, meaning the developers now only have to seek the building permit from city staff.

Neighbours in downtown Duncan and councillors including Sharon Jackson, have expressed several concerns about Dakova Square, but Mayor Phil Kent feels the permit process led to the correct decision.

The property owner, the development applicant, members of the public and council were all part of the process, he emphasized.

“It has gone through the regular process, although there was a split on council during the process,” he said. “I think everything was done according to the process. It met all the community plan require-

Jackson counters that the correct process wasn’t followed.

“The OCP requires that we do public consultation, have an open house, talk to the neighbours, and we did none of that,” she said. “We

improving the development process,” he said, pointing out that the ADP will need to approve future projects, and that councillors will be attending a workshop in April to further explain the development approval process.

In the meantime, Kent is looking forward to seeing work done on a piece of prime real estate that has served as an informal parking lot for the last two decades.

“I’m excited that we have a lot that has been vacant for 20 years and a serious developer ready to go forward with a project,” he said.

Jackson isn’t against having something on the site, but doesn’t think Dakova Square is appropriate.

“Everybody agrees it has to be developed,” she said. “Just not this development.”

“We should be making our downtown more precious, and this clearly has gone in the opposite direction,” Jackson said. “Instead of creating something that would be welcoming and of enduring value, we are getting precisely the opposite. That’s very distressing to me.”

Jackson is also unhappy that the Dakova proposal never went before an Advisory Design Panel.

Council voted in December to make the project exempt from the ADP, which is still being created by the city.

Kent acknowledged that future developments could be addressed a different way.

Council mulls full-time PR position LEXI BAINAS CITIZEN

Does the municipality of North Cowichan need a full-time official mouthpiece?

Maybe not, according to comments from councillors in a discussion of the subject at their March 4 meeting.

Vicki Swan, who currently serves part-time as North Cowichan’s community liaison officer, gave council a rundown on the possible future for such a position, saying it was necessary to develop a corporate communications plan with policies and procedures to deal with three areas: public awareness and education, issues management and public engagement.

She suggested North Cowichan look at other municipalities to see what they have done, consider what to do with social media, even investigate shared campaigns with other jurisdictions.

It’s budget time at the municipality, and council is hearing a lot of requests for funding.

Coun. Al Siebring heard Swan out and then said, “This is a nice way of saying, I need to be full time to do this right.”

He said he was worried about where the idea could go.

“We had run into problems where we didn’t get out in front of issues — Stoney Hill, Echo Heights, the municipal hall renovation. But this is expanding to a

degree I didn’t envision. Could it be a case of ‘mission creep’?”

Coun. Rob Douglas agreed, asking if the municipality was tracking the hits on its website now.

“It almost feels like putting the cart before the horse,” he said.

North Cowichan CAO Dave Devana said he and his staff have been trying to address the issue of communication with the public.

“We may have created this.

Council did not approve one nickel of money. Are you interested in focusing on issue management?

Are you serious about all three areas? We can reduce the scope of the program, but we can’t do all three areas,” he said.

Coun. Joyce Behnsen didn’t want the money spent.

“We have good newspapers out there. Governments don’t need to blow their own horns if they do well,” she said.

She was worried about the cost, which, with expenses, could add up to $51,100.

Siebring pursued the debate.

“Do we want to do this? What exactly do we want to do? Issue management? A broader strategy? I’m about proactive issues management. I really wonder how big this department needs to become. Do we have confidence in the mayor to get the message out?

Douglas suggested town hall meetings might be an effective way to talk with the public.

Coun. Kate Marsh said in her experience, “Most people are not reaching out to us unless they are unhappy.”

She thought talking about the good things was important, too.

Coun. Maeve Maguire wanted to know more.

“I don’t think we’ve defined what our goals are. I don’t think staff should celebrate how great we are. That comes off as spin. I do think we need to have a committee in place. At some level, council must have a say,” she said.

Devana reminded councillors that they were still just talking.

“This is just to open the conversation. It all could add up to $51,000 but it’s not in the budget yet,” he said.

Mayor Jon Lefebure wound up the debate by saying, “I do appreciate the three goals but it’s about how to get there. We all know the financial situation.”

He pointed out that some North Cowichan residents don’t use social media at all, and that, while he himself usually likes town hall meetings, “I don’t think we’ll ever solve the problem of emerging issues.”

Permit opponents no small group of holdouts t’s not a small section of the population.

Cobble Hill Holdings, which now has the go-ahead to import millions of tonnes of contaminated soil to their site in Shawnigan Lake, has taken the position that the information provided in the appeal process should be enough to convince reasonable people that the operation is safe for the watershed.

Their representative has said that only a small segment of the population will refuse to be convinced.

Hundreds of people turned out to express their outrage over the Environmental Appeal Board’s dismissal of the appeals filed to try to have the company’s permit overturned.

Those hundreds of people are not convinced, and they haven’t come to their opinion without reason.

used to prove their project safe to go ahead when they applied for their permit.

So there is a legitimate divergence of expert opinion here.

At stake is the Shawnigan watershed.

That’s a lot to gamble with.

It’s drinking water, it’s recreation, it’s the village’s economy, it’s property values — it’s the future of Shawnigan Lake, both the body of water and the community named for it.

The opponents to this importation of contaminated soil are clearly not going away and they are not going to stop fighting.

So far, the Cowichan Valley Regional District has stepped up admirably to back the community majority.

Even areas, such as the Municipality of North Cowichan, that had no immediate stake in the issue opted to chip in financially to fight this battle.

The future of our watersheds in our Valley is too important to leave individual areas trying to go it alone when it comes to protecting them.

The final chapter in this saga has yet to be written. We don’t yet know what it will hold, but there’s clearly more to come.

Well, technically you don’t.

But that is approximately what it has cost every man, woman and child in Shawnigan Lake, so far, to defend itself, and the Cowichan Valley, from a permit issued by the provincial government to store contaminated soil in a watershed gravel pit.

In this past week, the Environmental Appeal Board upheld the government’s decision to allow the dumping of contaminated soil, much of it capable of causing serious illness, in our watershed.

You might be tempted to empathize with Shawnigan Lakers

and say “I’m glad that didn’t happen to us”. But, it did!

The Cowichan Valley is all connected. All of our farms, vineyards, our “green” industries are at risk if part of the Valley acquires the reputation of being polluted.

After many reports of illegal dump sites around the Valley, Shawnigan Lake residents were the first to put their collective foot down and say, “No more. Big business and government will not pollute our lakes, rivers and land.”

Now Shawnigan needs your help to continue its legal defence.

Remember, as goes Shawnigan, so goes the Valley. In losing this appeal, the precedent has been set. Every gravel pit you know

of will want to make money off contaminated soil storage, polluting the land around it and the groundwater beneath it. $650,000 is a tough legal bill to absorb in a small village but, because the side benefit protects the rest of the Cowichan Valley, it would be good if everyone in the area contributed what they could.

So, be a Shawnigan Laker for a day and lend a hand.

In response to letter in support of visitor centre.

“Increasing (funding to the tourist information centre) would provide rural areas the opportunity to develop their own autonomy, economy, and culture rather than be further assimilated into centralized government decision-making.”

It is “because” areas in South Cowichan are presently assimilated into a centralized government in Duncan that the autonomy and decisions for our own communities in the south end are denied and these follies are constructed.

The visitor centre is ill-conceived in all ways — the location, the building design, the hours of operation, and the ongoing costs to maintain it at a time when people access anything they care to know on their smartphone 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in their own language.

There is a gross inequity of votes for our population in Shawnigan Lake which happens to be more than twice the population of Duncan and the largest unincorporated area in B.C. We are constantly having Duncan infrastructures inflicted upon us with the expectation that we should foot a share of the tax bill after our two CVRD votes are defeated by North Cowichan, as it was for this visitor centre to be built in the first place and why Shawnigan Lake voted against the funding of the Chesterfield complex.

Wood smoke is compromising health It is not just about the smell of smoke folks. Yes many people utilize wood to heat their homes and take the effort to burn properly. Unfortunately there are also those who persist in using outdated stoves and/or burn wet wood. Smoke just pukes out of the chimney and saturates the neighbourhood during calm, cold days, I have the pictures to prove my point.

I do not buy the affordability song preached by several writers. In order to utilize wood one has to own a truck, chainsaw and buy gas to go out and fetch the wood. You are talking of an investment of several thousand dollars. Even purchasing wood is not cheap, five cords at $160 equals $800. Our home is heated with electric baseboard and our annual bill, including water heating, washer, drier, dishwasher, TV and so on come to $1,200. Gas is even cheaper so cut the poor me crap.

There are many people with respiratory problems, and let me tell you there is nothing worse than not being able to catch your breath. The attitudes being demonstrated by several writers on this topic are completely uncompassionate and irresponsible.

I don’t think anyone is suggesting a complete ban on the use of wood stoves, however some restriction is certainly necessary under certain meteorological conditions. Many larger communities have a website or phone contact for people to determine if the use of wood stoves is permitted by linking burn days to good venting. Let’s face it, if

This past winter has been very distressful for me due to the number of poor venting days where the accumulation of smoke, from all sources, has caused me, and a number of others, much distress. Medical attention and treatment was required weekly for several weeks. I now find it necessary to sell my home in Chemainus, not because of the smell of smoke, but to seek a better location so I can breathe clean air, a right every individual is entitled too.

Somenos Marsh is gaining additional wetland.

The Somenos Marsh Wildlife Society is teaming up with North Cowichan on a pilot project to construct a wetland in the marsh to treat stormwater and create wildlife habitat.

“We are very excited to make this long-time dream for Somenos a reality,” says SMWS coordinator, Elizabeth Bailey. “With the excellent team we’ve assembled and the support of the community, this pilot project could be the beginning of many such wetlands in the Somenos.”

The society has been working closely with the municipality and wetland restoration experts Tom Biebighauser and Robin Annschild on wetland design as well as pre-construction monitoring and assessing the situation.

North Cowichan council voted at a March 4 council meeting to allow the society to proceed with construction and to contribute to the project financially.

The municipality will pitch in $7,000.

Environment Canada’s National Wetland Conservation Fund, is seeing one wetland pond dug on North Cowichan property on Beverly Street west of Fun Pacific.

Bailey appeared before North Cowichan council in January to talk about a vegetation, wildlife and cultural assessment survey to determine what contaminants are getting into the Somenos Marsh water system from stormwater flowing in from surrounding areas.

Even though “an educated guess” would indicate there could be quite a lot of contaminants of various kinds finding their way in, research has shown that some plants can help get rid of some of them, she explained to councillors.

The SMWS was hoping to get this work done by March 31 because the grant from the federal National Wetland Fund of $37,000 they have received runs out on that date.

The Shawnigan Lake watershed provides drinking water, recreation and economic opportunities to the area.

A panel heard arguments between March and July of last year, a series of hearings that were the longest in the board’s history.

The board released its 120-page decision on Friday.

“It’s a relief,” said John Alexander, a lawyer speaking on behalf of Marty Block and Mike Kelly, the owners of the companies in question.

“Obviously Cobble Hill Holdings is keen to proceed forward with the permit,” Alexander said. “They’ve spent a lot of time and money and effort in obtaining the permit and even more through the process of appeal.

They’re anxious to recoup some of that cost by getting back up and operating.”

Alexander also said that the appeal decision should allay the community’s fears. The public asked for and received a very critical and careful review of the project, he said, and the decision describes concerns about the project and how they are being addressed in detail.

He acknowledged that what he described as a small segment of the community will not be satisfied.

“There will be people, no matter how many experts, panels, judges look at this, if it’s not the result they want they’ll consider the

The CVRD, Furstenau and the Residents Association are among those who remain unconvinced.

“The decision of the Environmental Appeal Board is cause for concern, particularly for residents who live within the Shawnigan watershed — the safety of their drinking water is a top priority for us,” said CVRD Board Chair Jon Lefebure. “As such, the CVRD will be examining other options with regard to managing the importation and deposit of contaminated soil and ensuring the safety of drinking water sources in the region.”

The SRA said in a press release that it is deeply disappointed by the decision and maintains that it puts the safety of the community and its environment at risk.

“As an organization and as a community we are stunned by this decision in view of the extraordinary evidence that was presented at the hearing,” said Calvin Cook, SRA president.

Furstenau said she thinks the Appeal Board chose to ignore a substantial amount of evidence presented at the hearings, and full of flaws and omissions.

A community meeting Monday night saw discussion of possible next steps. Furstenau said the community needs to put pressure on the provincial cabinet now, in a bid to get the decision reversed, and a letter writing campaign with a clear message was on her agenda.

There are further legal avenues that may be pursued she said.

“This is not over by a longshot,” Furstenau vowed. “We’re going to fight until we win.”

The Appeal Board decision did lay out a number of additional permit requirements.

These include providing a spot for a community representative on the advisory committee; prohibiting blasting while cell liners are being installed; disallowing the reuse of liners; requiring a permanent roof to be built over the soil management area; requiring additional water quality monitoring in the event of a one in 200 years storm event and requiring the wheels of transport vehicles to be rinsed before leaving the site.

Alexander said the next steps for the company will be to have the site recommissioned and make sure all the necessary safeguards are in place, then they will be bidding on soil contracts.

pality had looked, as Siebring suggested, at other construction.

Devana explained that the consultant will identify the space needed and then work with the requestfor-proposal architect.

“If you split those jobs, it will cost some more money,” he said adding that the person making the initial space survey has a specialized skill.

On the subject of looking elsewhere for ideas, Devana told Douglas the municipality had talked to other organizations as well as the RCMP. “We’re not going to find a similar situation to ours,” he said, warning that expensive problems could occur if North Cowichan didn’t “follow a good process” and found some surprises.

Devana then shared that Kelowna had gone ahead without such a survey and were forced into a stopand-start situation afterwards. “[The new RCMP detachment building] is one of the biggest capital projects we’re ever going to do. This is going to save us money down the road. Everyone’s telling us to make this initial investment,” he said.

Councillors decided to move ahead with both recommendations.

A Campbell River cat spent an “unpleasant night” away from home according to a note duct taped to her collar.

Teri and Norman Marshall were shocked and angered to find the handwritten note inside a zip lock bag and taped over their cat’s metal identification tag engraved with their address and phone number.

The note said “Your cat has spent an unpleasant night. Please be a responsible pet owner and keep your cat in your own yard. We are tired of having it prowl our deck and we do not like gardening in a lit-

ter box. Should it come back we will have to take other measures.”

The Marshalls said when the cat returned on Wednesday morning, she was “clearly traumatized” and “meowing continually”.

“We are contacting bylaw enforcement, the RCMP, and have left a message with the SPCA Cruelty Investigation service,” said Teri. “We are not going to let this go.

We don’t want to find out what the ‘other measures’ are and we are really upset about what (the person) did to our cat overnight.

I totally feel that note meant danger to my cats.”

Not content with this achievement, he turned his attention to arc-lighting of streets and to

home electricity. The handsome, straggly-bearded councilman passed away, mourned by many, in 1915.

McMicking Point, eight kilometres southeast of Victoria City Centre, is the small peninsula between McNeill Bay and Gonzales Point, facing Enterprise Channel and Trial Islands.

A local chapter of the IODE was also named after him and a memorial plaque in his honour was erected in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church.

For many years, Mrs. McMicking was one of Victoria's leading philanthropists.

Artist Jan MacCormack has had a remarkable journey.

In 2012, she was staggering under a lifetime of addictions and the behaviour that often follows physical, emotional and sexual abuse.

Even a simple touch or hug was unbearably painful, she recalled last week, when announcing a special art show.

“My life was in complete chaos and darkness. Living in a swirl of pain, continuous falls, injuries, car accidents, debilitating depression, medicated into a state of numbness which had me not caring if I lived or died,” she said.

Now, less than three years later she’s a prolifically creative artist.

Each step of her personal healing journey is expressed in her visual art and in prose composed to accompany each piece.

Her art show opens at Time to Heal on Canada Avenue in Duncan Friday, March 27 at 4 p.m. with a wine and cheese reception, followed at 7:30 with music by the German duo, D’Accord.

It’s all about sharing the joy, she said.

“My sincere desire is that my art will have an uplifting and memorable effect on the b o dy, m i n d , and soul of others, as much as it does for myself.”

Shawnigan Lake based electronic music writer/producer Numbersix, who has lots or airplay on indie stations and the Internet, has been nominated for a Vancouver Island Music Award.

Numbersix has been nominated for Producer of the Year, for the EP Telekinetic Lovers. The awards attract some significant Canadian talent. Other nominees include Sue Medley, a Canadian country rock great. Past winners include the Grammy winning studio producer Joby Baker.

Numbersix has also been nominated for the electronic/dance recording award.

This nomination is for the track, Smoke and Mirrors.

To ice the cake, Spiller has been separately nominated for vocalist of the year for this song.

The awards gala was held on March 21 in Victoria.

Cowichan singer tapped for iconic song LEXI BAINAS CITIZEN

An effort to help end homelessness on Vancouver Island is resurrecting the iconic song Tears Are Not Enough.

On March 1, 2015, a group of independent musicians from all over Canada — including 14-yearold singer Angie Hawes from Duncan — was brought together by producers in Victoria to record a new, updated version of the 1985 Northern Lights single.

Their aim? To help raise money to end homelessness, starting on Vancouver Island but eventually reaching out across Canada.

Producer Jon Ede said he received a copy of an article called Socks Are Not Enough [by Canadian street nurse Cathy Crowe] and was moved by its message that the homeless need more than just a warm pair of socks.

“I thought that was a really heartbreaking thing to go through. My brain went immediately back to the song, Tears Are Not Enough.

We needed to do something.”

Ede tried to pull enough musicians for the project, buoyed by getting the approval of Jim Vallance, who wrote the original song, and gave Ede’s idea his blessing.

“I’ve been working in the music community for about 18 years and I’ve developed enough of a reputation that I could pull people together. I had meetings with our new Victoria mayor and told her I’d like to re-record the song and put all the money we get for it towards getting people off the streets. That’s our goal. We know it’s an endless battle. Then, we want to go up the Island and then across Canada,” he said.

So, with help from a surprising group of sponsors, Ede and his crew were able to bring musicians to Victoria for the big recording

and decide what’s the best course to follow,” he said.

History was made when they recorded it, too.

“We didn’t know this when we conceived our idea, but we rerecorded our version on exactly the same day as the original single was supposed to be released, from my understanding, 30 years ago,” Ede said.

“Not only did they show up on time but we finished ahead of schedule. Everybody pulled together,” he said.

“Our group of vocalists included Angie Hawes from Duncan,” he said.

“Her family brought her down here to deliver the message as well. She’s an amazing singer and she’s going to have a good career in music. I can already tell that,” Ede said.

Since then, word has been getting out about the project and people are waiting to hear the result.

“I’ve been getting overwhelmed by loving text messages and emails saying how glad people are about the project. The song is in editing and mixing. My producer is hoping to have it ready for

A Grade 11 student, Kelly also won highest marks in instrumental sight reading among flute solo entries. She studies flute and piano with Joy Ann Bannerman and won Festival voice awards as well this year.

Rowan is completing Grade 12 in June and plans to attend the University of Alberta. The pair was coached by Bannerman who was very pleased with their Festival results. Both play in the Cowichan Secondary Concert Band class and Rowan in the Cadet marching band as well.

Vickers strikes gold at B.C. Museum LEXI BAINAS CITIZEN

First Nations artist Arthur Vickers, whose gallery is in Cowichan Bay, is loaning a gold masterwork to the Royal BC Museum.

It will be part of a feature exhibition, titled Gold Rush! El Dorado in British Columbia, which is slated to open Wednesday, May 13.

In getting ready for this special event, the museum is beginning to receive precious golden items on loan from international museums, institutions and private citizens.

On Monday, March 16, Vickers’ beautiful piece, Intangible Heritage, became a headliner in that select group.

Intangible Heritage, painted in 24 karat gold leaf, will be a feature element of the exhibition, what Museum CEO Professor Jack Lohman is calling “a stunning contemporary coda to a complex story about the historical roots of the B.C. gold rush.”

Over the last two years, the museum has been developing its cultural program with exhibitions and festivals.

“The inclusion of contemporary art in our curated exhibitions provides a unique framework for everyone to engage with the subject,” Lohman said. “Artist, storyteller and philanthropist, Arthur Vickers is a living treasure of B.C. and one we are proud to have an association with.”

Vickers spent his early years in the coastal Tsimshian Village of Kitkatla. His mother was of English and Canadian heritage and his father was of Heiltsuk, Tsimshian and Haida First Nations ancestry.

Vickers said that this blend of cultural influences provides him with a particular insight and passion that expresses itself in each of his works.

This piece explores Vickers’ relationship to his First Nations heritage through his

W

hen we lose someone dear to us, whether family or friend, our heartache is nourished by the many memories of how this person has influenced our lives. Our grief reflects the realization that a source of love, of fellowship and perhaps of brother or sisterhood, is no longer there for us. The loss is real because that special intimacy will not be part of our future.

All we are left with is the past — our store of memories, and perhaps a framed photograph or two, as quiet reminders.

My wife and I said farewell to someone like that a little while ago, a very old friend, much valued for his kindness, his humour and his practical common sense.

His life was long and so filled with adventure that the details are worth retelling, particularly now that he is gone. So let me do just that, but as my words are not meant as an obituary, I won’t even mention his name, but I will occasionally use his initials to help move my story along.

N.L.J. was born to a comfortable family in middle England and by the time war was declared in 1939 had reached the ripe age of 18 — just old enough to be fed into the hungry machine that powered the British army. But he volunteered for duty and after months of hard study and vigorous training at the prestigious Royal Military College, Sandhurst, he graduated with the King’s Commission. He was posted up North to my part of the world, to command a company of new recruits in our county regiment, the Durham Light Infantry.

Being a southerner, well almost, from Cheshire near the Welsh border, he couldn’t make head or tail of the broad Geordie accents around him and initially relied on his sergeant major to translate the guttural twang and carry out whatever orders were necessary. England is full of local dialects, but the Northeast version of the language, being based on Norwegian origins, takes some getting used to. But he got on well with the pitmen, the clerks and the labourers who

had recently been drafted, and by the time the 16th battalion of The Durhams embarked for the Middle East, they were a welltrained force of fighting men.

But until then unblooded. The Tunisian campaign changed all that. They were thrown into the front line immediately, and the entrenched veterans of the German AfrikaKorps were ready and waiting for them. And so were the Stuka dive bombers, with their shrieking sirens, a familiar psychological terror which always heralded their incoming bombing attacks.

In the battle for the key town of Sedjenane, British losses were heavy, particularly for the newlyarrived D.L.I. Typical was one company of the battalion which went up the slopes against the renowned German parachute engineers. Of the 120 who went in, only 16 came out. But our friend was lucky, he survived all that desert warfare, and when the tide of battle turned and Rommel’s troops were eventually forced to surrender, due to lack of supplies and overwhelming odds, he set sail across the Mediterranean to Italy. N.L.J. waded ashore with his regiment in the shambles of Salerno, an illconceived fiasco fought against imbedded fortifications in very difficult terrain. The enemy included units of the elite Hermann Goering panzer grenadier division, but the American generals who were running the show had decided not to soften them up with the usual initial bombardment. They relied on the forlorn hope of gaining the element of surprise and securing a quick bridgehead from which the Allies

could spread out in force.

Their reconnaissance was faulty. The reality was devastating. Their troops and the British, Canadian and Polish assault teams paid a heavy price for this naive decision.

That’s when our friend’s luck changed. The shell that landed close by knocked him out and killed most of his squad. He woke up in a hospital ship lying off the harbour mouth and was surprised when he opened his eyes to find a Roman Catholic military padre bending over his cot and making the sign of the Cross. Now Captain N.L.J. was a staunch Anglican, but he assumed that this was it, his young life was coming to a close and the Last Rites were being administered to him because he wasn’t expected to live. He mumbled his thanks for the blessing and was astonished when the kindly priest assured him that the benediction he had bestowed was just to wish him a merry Christmas and a speedy recovery!

When it was his turn on the operating table the toiling medics managed to dig out most of the shrapnel and patch him up.

But while he was convalescing, one of the toughest battles of the war was being fought farther up the coast to capture the almost impregnable port of Ortona, and the Canadians were given the job.

The defenders, Hitler’s crack paratroopers, hardened in many Russian campaigns, were confident they could hold out indefinitely, because there was only one way into town and they had it very well covered.

But yard by yard, over smoking piles of rubble, the Canucks fought their way in and despite murderous crossfire, cleared each building one by one. After 10 days of intense fighting and horrendous casualties on both sides, plus a heavy toll in civilians, it was all over.

What was left of the German defenders had quietly slipped away like ghosts, leaving nothing but booby-trapped desolation behind them.

Ortona has been likened to a miniature Battle of Stalingrad,

N.L.J. spent the Second World War first in the Middle East, then in the Mediterranean, where he was wounded. [SUBMITTED] because in those few days, Canadians wrote the book on street fighting for troops of the western armies. That’s one of the reasons why we have a road in the Valley with that name. My wife’s father was there and was lucky enough to survive and live to tell the tale to his children.

But back to our young friend.

He was ordered to rejoin the remnants of his original company and together they slogged their way up through the mountainous Italian countryside with the rest of the Allied divisions.

But another situation was ringing alarm bells for the western Allies and the battalion was hastily shipped over to Greece, to help put down the communist insurgents who, on Stalin’s orders, were bent on exploiting the chaos caused by the retreating German units.

They were determined to take over the country, but that didn’t happen, so off went the battalion

to its final destination, Austria, where the redoubtable 16th, after the cease fire and with no more war to fight, was officially disbanded. The D.L.I. troops, now seasoned veterans, were eventually ferried home, demobilized, given a new suit of cheap clothes and left to face the realities of life as civilians, in a world much changed from the one they had originally left behind.

So that was the war for N.L.J. who at just 25, didn’t feel ready to settle down to a hum-drum job in the U.K. To be continued (Bill Greenwell prospered in the ad agency arena for 40 years. He retains a passion for medieval history, marine paintings and piscatorial pursuits. His wife Patricia indulges him in these interests, but being a seasoned writer from a similar background, she has always deplored his weakness for alliteration. This has sadly had no effect on his writing style, whatsoever.)

Valley hoops stars invited to Classic KEVIN ROTHBAUER CITIZEN

Nine boys and one girl from Cowichan Valley schools are headed to the Vancouver Island Seniors Classic all-star games at Spectrum Community School in Victoria this Saturday.

The long-running invitational games showcase the top graduating players on Vancouver Island, with North Island teams facing the South Island.

Three players will represent local teams in the boys A game: Josh Charles, who led the Cowichan Secondary Thunderbirds to the provincial tournament, as well as Paul Lee and Devin Cvitanovich of Brentwood College.

Charles’s Cowichan teammates Jordy Frost and Tyler Hudson will play in the boys B game along with Brentwood’s Skyler Rustad, Shawnigan Lake School’s Matt Beukeboom, and Johnny Caron and Nick Kapteyn, who helped carry the Duncan Christian School Chargers to their provincial tournament.

The lone female representative from the Valley is Duncan Christian’s Lauren King-Nyberg, who ended her secondary school career by also taking the Chargers senior girls team to the provincial tournament.

The boys B game will take place at 4:30 p.m., followed by the girls game at 6:15 p.m. and the boys A game at 8 p.m.

Cowichan LMG head coach Glen Martin suspects that his team is effectively crashing the Vancouver Island Soccer League’s party by making the final of the 100th Jackson Cup tournament.

“I don’t think they wanted us in there,” he speculated, guessing that organizers would have preferred an all-Victoriaarea match-up over this Sunday’s showdown between Cowichan and Saanich Fusion, which begins at 2:30 p.m. at Royal Athletic Park.

They should have known that Cowichan had a pretty good chance to make the final. Martin’s team had been in four of the previous five championship games, and won Division 1 of the VISL this year, for the first time ever.

Just being there, however, won’t be enough for Martin and his team, who want to win their third Jackson Cup since 2011.

“The boys are excited,” he said.

“They’re really looking forward to it. Everybody’s healthy and ready to play.”

Cowichan won the tournament in 2011 and 2012, and finished second in 2010 and 2014. This year’s squad includes five guys who have won two Jackson Cups with Cowichan: captain Jesse Winter, Stu Barker, Brad Archibald, Tyler Hughes and Dan Citra. It also features a few who haven’t won the cup at all, including longtime Div. 1 player Steve Scott, who was arguably Cowichan’s best player in the cup final last year, his first appearance in the big game.

The team’s depth is one of its greatest assets, Martin asserts. One of the biggest challenges will be deciding who actually gets to play.

“The key for us is to have good training sessions this week and prepare,” he said.

“It will make my job difficult, selecting a starting lineup.”

After going 12-3-3 in the regular season, Cowichan won three straight tournament games, beating Comox 3-1, Lakehill 6-1 and Vic West 4-2 to set up a rematch of last year’s Jackson Cup final with Saanich.

last year was scored by none other than Paddy Nelson, who joined Cowichan last fall for a change of scenery.

Nelson tied for the Div. 1 lead with 14 regular-season goals, and has added eight in three tournament games. Martin expects Nelson’s former teammates to be ready for him, however.

“Someone else has to step up,” the coach said. “We can’t just rely on Paddy; I’m sure they’re going to have a game plan for him.”

The Cowichan fans have traditionally packed the RAP bleachers when their team has reached the final, and Martin would like to see that happen once again.

“We’re hoping for a big turnout from the fans,” he said. “It makes the guys play better; it gets them all pumped up and inspired.”

Martin promises that the Cowichan faithful won’t be disappointed.

“Win or lose, it should be an exciting game,” he said.

“We have two weeks off after (before the provincial tournament begins). We might as well leave it all on the field.”

After never before making it past the first round in cup play, the Over 30B Cowichan Cougars have gone well beyond that point this year, thanks to being a tight-knit group, and will battle for the Frank Leversedge Cup in Victoria this Sunday.

“We are a closely bonded team of women who have fantastic fun on the field, win or lose,” coach Tanis Ballard said. “Each and every player boasts amazing team spirit which has resulted in us progressing the furthest ever into post season matches and obtaining a berth in the cup final.”

Cowichan defeated Vic West 3A 2-1 on penalty kicks in the semifinal last Sunday to advance to the championship game against Saltspring at Lochside Park.

Vic West went ahead about 10 minutes into last Sunday’s game, but Jennifer Lacerte scored off a cross from Kerri Hewitt to tie things up around the 30-minute mark. It stayed that way through the end of regulation and into overtime, before the Cougars finally settled it on penalty kicks.

The Cougars finished third in the Over 30 B division of the Lower Island Women’s Soccer Association, with a 9-4-0 record.

They stepped it up in cup play, and went 1-1-1 in the round robin, tying Ladysmith 3B 0-0, losing 1-0 to Juan de Fuca 3B and beating Vic West Scottish O30B 1-0.

That set up a 6-0 quarterfinal win over Ladysmith O30B on March 15, which was followed by the semifinal win over Vic West 3A. Cowichan went 2-1 against Saltspring in league play, but both losses were by a single point, which sets up a potentially very close championship game.

“Saltspring is definitely a challenging team to play against, but we are very evenly matched and have always enjoyed playing them,” Ballard said.

“Our defence will need to keep a few of their key players in check, a n d , o f c o u r s e we will need to score a few goals.”

Zurrer sports new kit The Women’s World Cup of Soccer is coming up this summer, but Crofton’s Emily Zurrer has already sported the national team’s new jersey.

Zurrer and her teammate Desiree Scott, along with men’s team star Julian de Guzman, were picked by Soccer Canada to model the new red kit when it was unveiled last Friday.

Zurrer is expected to be on the Canadian roster this summer for the World Cup, which kicks off on June 6 at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium.

“Playing in Canada is going to be awesome,” she told the Edmonton Journal.

Canada recently finished second at the Cyprus Cup tournament, falling 1-0 to England in the final.

Bantam Isles ‘unreal’ at provincials KEVIN ROTHBAUER CITIZEN

Just as they had hoped to do, the bantam A Kerry Park Islanders stepped up their level of play at the provincial Tier 3 championships in Port Hardy earlier this month, where they narrowly missed out on a berth in the semifinals.

“They played unreal,” head coach Tom Shadlock said. “They really rose to the occasion.”

The Islanders opened the tournament with a 3-3 tie against Sooke, coming back from a 2-1 first period deficit to even things up in the second. Isaac Tonkin-Palmer scored two goals, Samson McLean had a goal and two assists, and Jake Metcalfe also picked up a helper.

The following day, the Islanders had a very close game against Terrace, the top-seeded team in their pool and eventual bronze medallists, eventually losing 8-6. McLean had four goals and an assist, Mason Shadlock had a goal and an assist, and Dawson Bittner also scored. Liam Bell had two helpers, and Jason Mackay and Dawson Webb also had assists.

“For us to go toe-to-toe with those guys was fantastic,” Shadlock said.

The bantam Islanders with their Island championship banner. [SUBMITTED] Kerry Park finished the tournament with a 5-2 win over Squamish. McLean and Teja Brown each had a goal and an assist, Tonkin-Palmer, Bittner and Bell had single goals, and Kirk Whittaker also recorded a helper.

“To end on a high note against Squamish was a great way to close the season out,” Shadlock said.

The Islanders got into penalty trouble in their first two games, racking up 33 minutes against Sooke and 37 against Terrace.

“Given that, we stayed right with the

other teams,” Shadlock said. “Five-onfive, I think we could have beaten the other teams handily. The boys came to play. A lot of people were surprised by our performance, coming from little Kerry Park. I couldn’t have asked for any better.”

Kerry Park should have a strong bantam program again next year, with many players from this year’s squad eligible to return.

“We had seven first-year kids,” Shadlock noted. “For them to get experience playing at that level is unbelievable.”
