National NDP leader takes taste of Cowichan Valley KEVIN ROTHBAUER CITIZEN

The Cherry Point Estate Winery proved to be the optimal location for Tom Mulcair to make his stop in the Cowichan Valley during a tour of the West Coast this week. Not only did the federal NDP leader get to enjoy a few tastes of the hailed vineyard’s award-winning concoctions during a visit on Wednesday, but it also gave him a fine opportunity to tout the party’s economic plans. “This is the ideal small business that we’re talking about,” he said, emphasizing the NDP’s proposal to give tax breaks to small and medium-sized businesses. “These are the kinds of people we want to help.” Joining Mulcair on his tour of the vineyard was Alistair MacGregor, who will represent the NDP on the ballot in the next federal election. MacGregor is hoping to succeed Jean Crowder, who has been the Member of Parliament for Nanaimo-Cowichan since 2004. Mulcair praised Crowder for her hard work on behalf of First Nations and Inuit, and noted that she will remain a “close friend and adviser” even after she exits the NDP caucus. The party leader is still looking forward to having MacGregor — who has spent the last seven years working in

Duncan and Langford areas, but noted he will benefit from having provincial NDP leader John Horgan as Langford constituent.

Following a seven-month investigation that determined he was “not the victim of an unprovoked attack,” police have decided not to lay charges in connection with the death of an 82-year-old Chemainus man in the Cowichan District Hospital last summer. Gordon Kriese died in the hospital on July 10, seven days after an altercation with his roommate in the hospital. The North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP were notified of the death on July 18. “Despite a lengthy investigation, we have found no evidence to suggest the deceased was the victim of an unprovoked attack while in the care of the Cowichan District Hospital,” Island RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Darren Lagan said. According to Lagan, an investigation was started the day that police learned of the death. Through the investigation, they learned that both men involved in the July 10 altercation “suffered from medical conditions which significantly impacted their mental abilities and health.”
