Think about your electricity needs when renovating (NC) – The Electrical Safety Foundation International Canada (ESFI-Canada) is encouraging homeowners to address electrical system needs as part of home renovating projects, big and small. This follows a national homeowner survey that indicates only 56% of 2014 renovation plans include electrical work. Electrical systems age, like other parts of your home, and require regular review and maintenance to ensure they are in good operating condition. Compounding this fact, the advancements in technology have increased electricity demands overall. Before you start a renovation project ask yourself: • Have I identified and addressed potential concerns associated with my electrical system? ESFI-Canada says that 38% of homeowners surveyed expressed some concern with their electrical system. It is important to review your home’s wiring to address improper electrical installations, deteriorated or damaged wiring, and loose connections to avoid potential

shock and fire hazards. • Can my electrical system meet my changing electricity needs? Of those surveyed, 51% reported it was very important to upgrade electrical systems to meet changing needs. Increasing demands on our electrical system can result in overloading and overheating. • Do current electrical Codes and Standards impact my renovation plans? Modifications and renovations to your home must meet current provincial electrical safety codes and standards. 70% surveyed indicated their decision to update was impacted by codes and standards requirements. • Who should do electrical work in my home? As many as 73% of those surveyed reported a high degree of importance with using a qualified or licensed electrical contractor. Electrical work can be complicated and you should only hire qualified and/or licensed electrical contractors to do this work. • What permits and inspection arrangements are required? Electrical work must be inspected by the

regulatory authority responsible in your province and documentation should be shared with your insurance provider. If you have hired a contractor, check to ensure that they have made these arrangements.
