The costs of fuel consumption and extreme-storm damage, plus costs in the way of carbon footprints, are making all of us insist on far more property benefits, including superior durability and resilience from pending disasters. “In that case, open the door to a home built with concrete reinforced walls, instead
of wood, and see how you will receive greater safety, comfort, investment value, and energy efficiency,” says Todd Blyth at Nudura, a leading name in building technology. “Concrete is a major solution for weather extremes, and for more than a decade now, the building system using ICFs (insulated concrete forms) has proven to deliver the most durable building frame.”
The ICF principle is simple, Blyth says. The walls are constructed with preassembled, interlocking units (similar to Lego), so they’re easily transported to any building site. Each form consists of two panels of thick foam (expanded polystyrene) connected with a patented web system. Guided by the architectural design and beauty aspects you request, the ICFs are stacked, steel reinforced, and filled with concrete until the entire building envelope is complete. Here’s a snapshot of additional building benefits: Disaster-resilient: ICF walls withstand winds of up to 402 kilometers per hour and give you a fire protection rating as long
as four hours. Energy efficiency: Premium insulation delivers an energy-efficiency rating as high as R-50 due to the thermal mass of the concrete (compared to an average R-20 in wood structures), and that equates to reducing household energy bills by as much as 70 percent. And if optional inserts are added to the ICF forms, this efficiency is improved even more. Occupant comfort: Outside cold can easily travel through the typical wood-framed wall, causing uneven temperatures inside your home. However, the monolithic ICF wall eliminates drafts and cold spots and it is an effective sound barrier, filtering out unwanted noise.

READY YOUR HOME FOR HOLIDAY GUESTS The holiday season is about more than just rushing to stores to stock up on presents. Socializing and hosting friends and family members to catch up on a year’s worth of news also makes this time of year so special. Before friends and family arrive, holiday hosts must take steps to prepare their homes for their guests. The following home prep plan can make relatively easy work of tidying up the house and ensuring it is inviting to guests. Start with the entrance Hosting can motivate homeowners to finish certain home improvement projects that enhance the appearance of their homes. Tidy up your home’s entryway to make it more welcoming. Be sure the front door and walkways are well lit. Remove obstructions and trim back bushes and other plant life. Festive decorations can brighten up the space. Don’t forget a welcome mat to reinforce to guests that they truly are welcome at your home. Quick cleaning Sometimes the joy of hosting can be overshadowed by the task of preparing for your guests. Although a thorough cleaning of the home is great if you have the time, it may not be necessary. Go from room to room identifying spaces that are in need of a thorough cleaning. Spend time in the kitchen clearing clutter from the counters and make sure the dining space is clean and the table is presentable. GOING GREEN MAKES FINANCIAL SENSE Being “green” is not just a buzzword today but also a way of life for an increasing number of people. The benefits of making some environmental strides not only extend to safeguarding resources for future generations. For those who have not yet embraced environmentally friendly actions, perhaps the financial rewards of doing so may be the catalyst for change.
• Try public transportation. If you are more of a commuting loner or do not have anyone nearby to split the ride, try switching to public transportation, where available. Not only will you reduce your carbon

HOME RENOVATIONS COULD INCREASE PROPERTY TAXES
If you live in New York’s Nassau County, you are possibly paying some of the highest property taxes in the country. Nassau County residents had an average property tax bill of nearly $8,500 in 2011. Understanding property taxes is not very cut and dry. They are supposed to rise and fall with home values, but this isn’t always the case. There is roughly 80,000
pages of federal code on property taxes, and each state and town often has its own rules governing how property taxes are assessed. State and local budget cuts can raise taxes even if your home value remains the same, as will an increase of benefits for public employees. Property tax is typically the primary means that many jurisdictions raise revenue. So if your community needs money, you can probably count on it financing that need through higher property taxes. The two things that determine property taxes are the assessed value of your home and the property tax rate for where you live. In many cases, making improvements to the inside and outside of your home
can result in higher taxes on your property. Many homeowners do not think about the tax man when they are about to renovate their home. But it is important to consider that home repairs -- even planting a garden -- could lead to higher property taxes.
