Try these simple soundproofing tips to restore or create a more tranquil atmosphere: 1. Hush noisy appliances. Make sure your appliances are working smoothly. Unusual rattles, clanks or vibrations may mean it’s time for a repair. When a replacement is needed, seek out a quieter machine. New technologies have allowed manufacturers to lower the sound output of many models.

2. Seal sound leaks. Holes and cracks around windows and doors let outside noise into the home. Weather-stripping and/or caulking can help to eliminate the intrusion of exterior noise. Adhesive soundproofing tape can also help seal any problem areas.

3. Anticipate centers of noise when renovating. When designing a new room or renovating an existing one, consider its intended use and potential for generating noise. Playrooms, music studios or home theaters, for example, can be quieted with insulation. Look for a product such as Roxul Safe’n’Sound that is specifically designed to provide superior sound absorption and can be applied to the interior walls of a noisy room to effectively reduce disruptive sounds.

4. Use sound-absorbent materials. Carpets and window drapes prevent sound from echoing around a room. If your home has hardwood, laminate flooring or tile, consider investing in a throw rug to reduce ambient noise and add some character to your space.

Taking simple steps to create a more peaceful space will maximize the enjoyment of your home. It can also have the added benefit of helping to keep the peace among spouses, parents and siblings alike.

Winterizing 101: How to prepare your yard for winter Changing seasons can be tough on a lawn. Always exposed to the elements, lawns can fare especially poorly upon the arrival of winter, a season known for its harsh and unforgiving weather. Even the most perfectly manicured lawn can suffer at the hands of winter weather, causing homeowners to sit idly by and hope spring arrives that much sooner.

But as punishing as winter weather can be on a lawn, homeowners are not without recourse. Much like homeowners can take steps to help their lawns survive sizzling summer heat waves during the warmer months of the year, they also can take steps to help their lawns make it through the often stormy weather synonymous with winter. * Don’t procrastinate. Putting off the process of winterizing a lawn can put that lawn in jeopardy. Lawns will turn dormant the closer you get to winter, and they may reject the nutrients found in fertilizer as a result. Those nutrients will prove valuable once spring weather returns, so start the winterization process in early fall so the lawn has sufficient time to absorb nutrients and strengthen itself for the seasons to come. * Treat trouble spots. Summer can be even harder on a lawn than winter, especially for those lawns located in regions where heat waves and drought are common. Cost-effective fencing options Fencing serves many purposes. Some homeowners erect a fence for privacy, while others do so to contain pets and children. Because fencing can be expensive, some homeowners look for ways to cut costs, which can be relatively easy, especially for those homeowners willing to consider various materials when erecting their fence.

Traditional fences are available in materials ranging from wood to vinyl to metal.

Homeowners have other options at their disposal if they prefer a more natural fence. Different shrubs, trees or grasses can be planted to create a barrier between properties or within the property.

When choosing a fencing material, consider that even a less expensive material may prove more expensive in the long run if it needs significant maintenance or has to be replaced in just a few years. Therefore, the most cost-effective fencing material may not necessarily be the least expensive one at the store. Here are some materials homeowners can consider. * Found material: Repurposed wood or metal can be crafted into a rustic, one-of-akind fence. Materials can be found that are no cost, requiring only the cost of labor.

Should you build it yourself, this can be next to nothing. Sometimes existing fences on another property can be disassembled and re-built on your own property for little to no cost as well.

• Chainlink/chainwire: Chainlink fencing is one of the most economical types of boundary fencing. The fencing comes in a variety of diamond sizes and is fixed to galvanized pipes spaced across the perimeter of the property. Although it is some of the least expensive fencing, it does not offer much privacy on its own. But if you are looking at fencing simply as a barrier, chainlink could be the way to go.

• Picket fencing: A wooden picket fence is another inexpensive fencing material.

The pickets can be purchased in various heights, and this fence may be used as garden border fencing or to mark a property line between homes. Spacing the pickets widely apart may cut down on the number that need to be purchased, further keeping the cost down.

• Bamboo: Bamboo is a rapidly growing grass that produces a hard wood-like material that is used in many building applications. Bamboo wood can be used to build a fence, but the natural plant also can be planted to form a living fence for privacy.

While new irrigation systems can be effective, homeowners looking for alternatives to such systems can find ways to save both water and money. Planting right is a great way to conserve water and save money, and homeowners need not be veteran landscapers to ensure their lawns and gardens survive and even thrive during warm weather.

• Learn about native plants and grasses. The most beautiful lawns and gardens in the dog days of summer are not necessarily those owned by the most obsessive homeowners. Instead, these homeowners might just have chosen grass and plants native to the local climate and therefore more capable of handling the ups and downs of that climate. When choosing grass and plants for your lawn, consult with a local lawn care professional if you’re hesitant to choose your own grass and plants. If you don’t want to work with a consultant, do your homework on both your property and the region where you live before making any decisions. For example, if your home is located in a region where summer drought is commonplace, then grass and plants that do not need much water might be your best option.

• Aerate the soil. Healthy soil can help to protect grass and plants forced to cope with harsh conditions. Aeration is a process by which soil is punctured with spikes or cores of soil are removed from the ground to improve drainage and water penetration. Operating an aerator in the yard can be challenging, so it’s often best to leave such a project to the professionals. But when planting in a garden, homeowners can turn and cultivate the soil to improve its moisture retention with a goal toward growing healthier plants.

• Choose the right season to plant. Some plants thrive when planted during certain times of the year, but many plants should not be planted during the summertime.

When planted in the summer, plants typically need more water to establish themselves because the temperatures are hotter. Spring or fall tend to be the best seasons to plant, but homeowners can consult a local lawn and garden professional to determine the best time to plant in their specific region.

• Lay mulch around bushes, plants, shrubs and trees.

Mulch serves many purposes, from the practical to the aesthetic. Many homeowners find laying mulch around their property adds to the property’s visual appeal. But mulch also is practical, helping soil to retain its moisture and reduce evaporation. In addition, mulch helps curtail the growth of weeds, which compete with existing plants for water.

• Make trees work for you. Planting trees around a lawn can not only improve the curb appeal of your home, but also trees serve more practical purposes. When planting trees, look at trees as natural providers of shade that can lower soil temperatures and reduce moisture loss. You may want to plant trees in such a way so they provide shade to areas that tend to be hit especially hard by summer sun.

Planting right with a goal of protecting their property from the elements and conserving water can save homeowners money and make their lawns and gardens more aesthetically appealing.
