By Hank Van Exel
Hello, everyone!
Who would have ever thought about things like home schooling, closed churches, eating outside, wearing masks and buying stock in Zoom First and foremost I hope that everyone is healthy and safe. To say it has what is zoom anyway?? But to me, the worst was not seeing family and been a strange year is a understatement. friends or even being able to give our respects to people we have lost, The year started off with a bang. We had a great convention and sale at or to celebrate marriages and birthdays!!!! San Luis Obispo and I would like to thank Merced for throwing such a This year was also a first for me and may others as we weren’t able to host wonderful event. our State Show, California Holstein’s biggest and best event of the year. The We went on to have three memorable sales topped off with what I think show brings great cows and people together for a week of camaraderie is one of the best Junior shows in the country with the Western Classic. and competition. “You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone.” This saying certainly comes to mind for 2020. But through it all, we have Congratulations to all that put these great events on. survived and powered through. I will never forget driving home from the Ruann Fiesta Sale listening to the radio and realizing that our world going to be turned up side down. California breeders sent an outstanding group to the Western Fall National Holstein Show in Richmond, UT. Ruann walked about with Intermediate Champion and Grand Champion with their partners, the Gambonini family. Graisson and Mandy Schmidt with their partners took home Intermediate and Grand Champion of the Red & White Show while the Borba family had Senior Champion and the McIsaac and Price families had Junior Champion in the Reds. Finally, Aidan Azevedo and Xavier Silveira took home Grand and Reserve Champion honors of the Junior Show. You can see all the results from that show later in this issue! Several California exhibitors also made the trip to Circleville, Ohio for the inaugural North American Open Dairy Show. The Borba family walked away with Reserve and HM Grand Champion honors. John Cunningham and Ross Rissner had Junior Champion and the McIsaac and Price families had HM Junior Champion of the Holstein Show.

Despite the many of our events being cancelled this year, the Board felt it was important to still produce an Annual for 2020. New this year is the California Holstein 2021 Calendar! If you’d like an extra copy of the calendar, make sure to reach out to Kate Teixiera. I’d also like to thank her for all her hard work throughout the year and during these trying times.

This is my last year as President and I would like to thank a great Board of Directors who have worked very hard to come up with new ideas to keep our Association thriving. It has been a honor and pleasure to serve you. Thank you and see you in 2021! Hank van Exel, CHA President
Announcement Our Board of Directors has made the tough decision to cancel the 2021 State Holstein Convention, due to lack of venue availabilty given continued gathering restrictions. Current board members and executives have graciously agreed to serve as they presently sit for another year. We will plan an awards ceremony in conjunction with the State Show in April. Juniors are planning online virtual activities for January & February.
YOU ARE RESILIENT. We see your strength and persistence each day, as you continue to farm, take care of your cows, and run your business; even when the future is uncertain or times are hard. We appreciate that you continue to work hard to feed the world.
THANK YOU.

National Director’s Message
By Bill Genasci
In the beginning of my message in the 2019 California Holstein Annual I used phrases like “some light at the end of the tunnel,” “futures look promising,” and “hopefully the worst is behind us.” Obviously, I am a poor predictor of the future. In all fairness, I don’t believe any of us foresaw what this year would bring, but I’m sure we all look forward to seeing 20202 in the rear view mirror. In April, the Council of Dairy Cattle Breeding published the 2020 Genetic Base Change which showed the amount of progress made in the past five years. Their calculations show that the Holstein breed has made tremendous progress in production, reproduction, and type traits over this period. Holstein was the only breed that had positive change in all 19 production and reproduction traits. They were particularly high in Daughter Pregnancy Rate, Cow Conception Rate, and Cow Livability. The report can be found at www.uscdcb.com under April 2020 Genetic Base Change. Holstein Association USA is a key provider of type information, accurate ID, pedigree information, and even production information through AgriTech Analytics, which is now processing over 1 million records from more than 530 herds monthly. Holstein Red Book Plus online offers you the opportunity to fine-tune your breeding program like never before. Using this technology, you can sort through approximately 3,300 proven and genomic young sires available to
12 « CALIFORNIA ANNUAL 2020
choose the direction you want your herd to go. If you want to moderate the size of your cows, there are sires that can do that. Need more components, longer teats, more set to the leg, or improve reproductive traits, there are sires available to help you breed for the animals that you want for the future. Red Book Plus is a tool you can use. Despite the obstacles caused by Covid-19, Holstein Association has continued to provide services at a higher rate than I expected. Even though the office was essentially closed, the field representatives were furloughed, and the classification program was cancelled in April, much of the works was still processed. The Association is financially stable, and looks forward to making up some lost ground by year-end. As I write this, I am about two weeks away from our first face-to-face Board of Director’s meeting since February. Conference calls and Zoom meeting can’t compete with personal interactions. I hope we can all get back to that soon. If you have any questions or comments I can be reached at 209-7657111 or genace1@aol.com.

From the Office Manager By Kate Teixeira What a year! The past months have given us many twists and turns, and with that, countless challenges that provided the opportunity to creatively overcome. Good thing tenacity is a basic requirement for survival of dairy producers and farming families. Adaptability combined with problem solving is old-hat in this industry. Undoubtedly, we’ve all felt similar to the little fish in Finding Nemo at times- “Just keep swimming, Just keep swimming!”
This was clearly displayed in the California cattle exhibited at fall shows, outstanding classification results around the state, and forward progress within herds. Please enjoy the ads and editorial in this year’s magazine celebrating these accomplishments. The people and the cows in the California I’ve made a conscious choice to focus on what 2020 offered each of Holstein Association are truly among the us, and live with gratitude for what a pandemic can’t take. Luckily COVID-19 has not affected the bovine population, and cows do not follow mainstream media nonsense. Although many events, shows and gatherings were cancelled, the work in members’ herds never ceases. The dedication to Holstein genetics and drive to reach type, production, genomic and profitability goals is constant.

Breeder of the Future Award Winners MARILYN HERZOG BREEDER OF THE FUTURE GIRL The 2020 Marilyn Herzog Breeder of the Future Girl recipient is Mykel Mull of Chowchilla, CA. “To be considered for Breeder of the Future would be an amazing honor. During the past four years, dairy cattle have become a huge part of my life. Dairying has been a part of my family for three generations - it has been our business and our passion.” Mykel is 13 years old and a 4 year member of the Merced County Holstein Club. “I am proud to say my parents, my brother and I have opened a small dairy in Los Banos, CA last April. I currently have all my animals on our small family ranch and our dairy where we feed twice a day every day of the year. From March to November I milk my dairy goats two times per day.” “I started my dairy project when I was 8 years old. I purchased my first heifer with my boer goat project money. I started raising goats at the age of 4. It has grown into a small business, with help from my parents. I invested in my dairy project with my boer goat savings money. I currently have 46 Dairy Goats, 26 Boer Goats and 37 Registered Holstein cows and heifers, and 5 Jersey cows and heifers.” Mykel has exhibited her animals at Los Banos Fair, Chowchilla Fair, and Madera Fair. She has received numerous showmanship awards and recognition for her livestock projects, including Outstanding 1st and 2nd Year Exhibitor awards at the Los Banos Fair.
YOUNG BREEDER OF THE FUTURE GIRL - LAUREN SILVEIRA Lauren Silveira, 11, of Chowchilla, is the 2020 winner of the Young Breeder of the Future Girl Award. She is a 6th grader and third year member of the Merced County Holstein Club and the California Junior Holstein Association. She owns 45 Registered Holsteins, with 20 of them bred by her. In 2018, she exhibited a dairy heifer for the first time. “It was that summer that I knew I wanted to raise heifers and work on the dairy just like my brother. I work with my heifers as much as I can, washing and walking them almost every day. I work hard at taking care of my heifers and look forward to learning more about breeding them. I am proud to be involved in the dairy industry and being a part of our family business.” Lauren has attended the Invest in Your Future Youth Workshop as well as Cow Camp. “I really enjoyed all of the workshops and learned new things that helped me with my dairy projects, especially showing. I had so much fun Cow Camp and the dairy workshops and meeting new people.” She has competed in Dairy Bowl and Dairy Jeopardy since 2018. She was on the 2nd place Junior Dairy Bowl team this past year and was in the Finals for the Junior Dairy Jeopardy competition. “Overall, I have enjoyed making new friends through the Junior Holstein Association and have had so much fun at all of the Conventions. I really like learning about the dairy industry and meeting new people that like dairy as much as me. I look forward to becoming more involved in the Association and hope to become an officer some day.”
Beyond her livestock projects, Mykel is very active in the California Junior Holstein Association. “The people I have met and competed with in Dairy Jeopardy and Dairy Bowl at State and Nationals will always be a part of my extended family. The practical Alex Gambonini with Mykel Mull, the 2020 Marilyn Herzog knowledge and life skills Breeder of the Future Girl award recipient. I have learned from the Dairy Industry are things that I will be with me for a lifetime.” In 2020, Mykel was on the winning Junior Dairy Bowl team at State Convention, had the top Written Test score and won the Junior Division of Dairy Jeopardy. She is also serving as Treasurer of the CJHA. Mykel competed at the 2019 National Holstein Conventions in Dairy Bowl, where the Junior team placed 5th out of 16 teams. She also plans on applying for the National Young Distinguished Junior Member award and the Distinguished Junior Member award when she is older.
YOUNG BREEDER OF THE FUTURE BOY - LAYNE MULL Layne Mull, 9, of Chowchilla, is a three year member of the California Junior Holstein Association and a first-year member of 4-H. “As of January 1st, I can finally show in 4-H and compete in the dairy show ring. I plan on showing at our county fairs and hopefully more.” Like his older sister Mykel, he started with a dairy goat project and has used that money to fund his dairy project. “My sister and I are a huge part of the everyday operation and relief milk once a week with my mom. It is hard work and we are doing the best we can. The cows and calves have to come first. We feed calves and goats every day.” Layne has participated in several Dairy Judging Contests, placing 2nd High Individual 4-H Reasons at the Western Classic Judging contest in 2018. “I have been lucky enough to attend three California State Holstein Conventions as well as three National Conventions. I have enjoyed going to all the junior events, sales, banquets and getting to meet so many people. The kids I have met and had the chance to watch have made me want to be a part of the great world of Holstein. The friends I have met will be friends forever. We do not get to see each other all the time but when I do see them again, we have so much fun.” Layne has competed in Public Speaking, Dairy Bowl and Dairy Jeopardy at the State Conventions. In 2020, he tied for 2nd high written test score, was on the winning Novice Dairy Bowl team and placed 4th in the Novice Dairy Jeopardy contest. He hopes to one day compete in CALIFORNIA ANNUAL 2020 » 29

Junior President’s Message Hello, my name is Kylie Konyn and I have enjoyed serving as your 2020-2021 California Junior Holstein Association President. I am 17 years old, and a third-generation dairy farmer, from San Diego, CA. My parents, Frank and Stacy Konyn, are the owners of Frank Konyn Dairy, one of two remaining dairy farms in our county. My sister and I are partners in Aspire Holsteins and Jerseys, where we manage over 150 registered Holsteins and Jerseys. I have been an active member of the CA Junior Holstein Association for nine years, competing in Dairy Bowl and Speech competitions, attending the Annual Cow Camp, and attending numerous Holsteins shows throughout the Nation. I have also been a four-time participant at the National Holstein Conventions where I was fortunate to work with other exceptional Holstein enthusiasts from California. The summer of 2019 and into this year, proved to be very different from previous years for California Jr Holstein members. In 2019, life and activities were normal. California juniors spent many days at their local and County fairs, the California State Fair, and a handful of juniors had the amazing opportunity to travel to Appleton, Wisconsin to compete at the 2019 National Holstein Convention. Over the week, California was able to put on a show and our youth received many top honors. In the Dairy Jeopardy contest, contestants included Kiara Konyn, Sebastian Paolini, Jennifer DeVries, Sienna Barrett, Alyssa Timoshuk, and Arielle Spotswood. Jennifer DeVries was also awarded 2nd High Individual in the Junior National Written Test. Konrad Reidman was the Junior Division National Winner in the folding display contest. Siana Barrett created California’s national banner. Additionally, I was able to represent California as a Young Distinguished Junior Member for Holstein Association USA. Our Junior Dairy Bowl team consisting of Mykel Mull, Emma van Loben Sels, Victoria Paolini, and Reese Renati received 5th High Team. Our Senior team comprised of Abbi Prinns, Jacob Fernandes, Hayley Fernandes, and myself Kylie Konyn returned to the stage and claimed the title of undefeated Champion Senior Dairy Bowl Team. This same team of Holstein enthusiasts received second in the senior dairy bowl contest in 2018 and was the winning junior team in 2017.
Although this team will be missed, we look forward to future teams of champions. This past February, our State Holstein Convention was held in San Luis Obispo, CA. Merced Holstein breeders held a fantastic convention and juniors from throughout the State traveled from San Diego to Redwood Empire came to compete and participate in dairy bowl, dairy jeopardy, speech competitions, workshops, and other activities. Cal Poly, SLO also hosted a fabulous sale night BBQ and Auction. Oh, the memories of that week. Little did we know that our lives as we know it would change so rapidly. 2020 has thrown us many curve balls. This year has taught us to cherish memories such as those and look forward with hope to a brighter future. Early in the pandemic, when there was still uncertainty about whether there would be a National Convention in Pennsylvania, California Juniors continued their efforts of studying and preparing for the contests. Qualifying tests were taken, and spots awarded for Speech, Jeopardy, and Dairy Bowl Teams. Travel plans were made, and hotels reserved. Upon news of the Convention being cancelled in April, these efforts were put on hold. Those who achieved a spot to compete at the 2020 National Convention will have the opportunity to represent California next June back in Pennsylvania. The dairy daily fives for this season have begun and should these kids be given the opportunity to compete, I guarantee you they will make our state proud! Despite the cancellations, the California Holstein Association found new ways to engage junior Holstein enthusiasts. If other juniors were like me and my teammates, we just channeled our dairy enthusiasm towards these other activities. The photo contests, creative milk jug contest, and judging activities allowed us to grow in new, creative, and innovative ways. It also gave some of us who may not have had these opportunities the chance to compete and win some great prizes. Thank you to all the sponsors and donors for these new competitions. Despite shows in California being cancelled many California youth were able to participate at shows such as the Western Nationals in Richmond, Utah, North America Open Dairy Cattle Show in Circleview, Ohio, and the MidEast Fall National Holstein Show in Louisville, Kentucky. We are all waiting with high hopes are high for 2021 show season. It has been an honor to serve the California Junior Holstein Association as your Junior President. I am extremely excited to see what our California juniors achieve this year. Keep your hopes high, this year will go on!

Holstein Association USA Field Representatives By Emily Annexstad, Marketing & Communications Manager HAUSA
Continued Progress During Challenging Times It is safe to say 2020 has been an unusual year. The COVID-19 pandemic has presented its own set of unique challenges not only for our members, but for people around the world. The commitment our members have to forge ahead, despite the obstacles of 2020, is an inspiration to us all. In his column in the Fall 2020 issue of The Pulse, CEO John Meyer commended Holstein Association members on their strength and resiliency writing, “Since March, our members have known what to do – and they have done their best in a very challenging time. The resiliency you continue to show is awe-inspiring.” Holstein Association USA continues to move forward to serve our members while taking necessary precautions to keep our employees safe and healthy. Despite its challenges, 2020 has brought progress and even some bright spots for our valued members. In fact, some of the progress is taking place in your own backyard. Research grant program funds University of California, Davis study Holstein Association USA’s research grant program provides funding to Universities in the United States performing research studies that benefit the profitability of Holsteins. One of the current research projects supported by the research grant program is a three-year study from the University of California, Davis which evaluates breeding cows for the slick hair gene to improve heat tolerance. Dr. Anna Denicol, assistant professor at the University of California, Davis, is the principal investigator of the project, which is now in its second year. To be selected for the grant, Dr. Denicol and other applicants submit research proposals that are reviewed by a diverse committee of dairy producers and others directly involved in the industry. The review committee looks for well-designed proposals that will benefit all Registered Holstein® breeders. Research topics can address a variety of areas including genetics, nutrition, reproduction, dairy foods, and economics. “What we hope to see is that the animals carrying the slick hair gene mutation are more resistant to heat stress,” said Dr. Denicol. “The hope is that we can help mitigate this problem a little bit from all aspects, from production, reproduction, and well-being and all other aspects involved.” Dr. Denicol and her co-principal investigator, Dr. Peter Hansen from the University of Florida, are following two groups of Holsteins on several farms in California and Florida from birth through their first lactation. They aim to discover if the shorter, finer hair on animals with the slick hair gene mutation helps to reduces heat stress.
In addition to the slick hair gene study, a project from North Carolina State University focusing on using genomic information to manage inbreeding and a study from the University of Wisconsin-Madison researching double ovulation and twinning in Holsteins have also been funded by Holstein Association USA’s research grant program. “The research proposals that shift their way to the top, there is some potential and long-term benefit that we can give back to the producer. If we get the benefit to the producer, that will benefit the consumer as well,” explains Dr. Shanks, dairy genetics consultant for Holstein USA. Many reasons to smile The research grant program is just one of many things that have given us a reason to smile this year. We have enjoyed showcasing the story of Registered Holsteins through the words of our members on Holstein America, the leading dairy program on national television. If you have not had the chance to watch it yet, you can find this episode and all past episodes on our YouTube channel or on our website at www. holsteinusa.com/news/holstein_america.html. While we missed gathering together in person for the National Holstein Convention and at World Dairy Expo this year, we continue to recognize our phenomenal members through our usual awards. The Monthly Classification Summaries and 40,000+ Pound Production Records are two new features on Holstein Association USA’s website. Created to help recognize outstanding Holstein cows and their breeders, the links to these updated lists can be found under the Popular Lists section on the website homepage. Additionally, we launched a Virtual Interview Contest for our Junior members, designed to help them foster professional development skills and stay engaged in Holstein Association activities. Other positives for our members range from new Holstein Marketplace Sires bulls to choose from to continued genetic progress for the Holstein breed. These are just some of the many ways we have continued to serve our members during this unusual year. To stay up to date on what is happening at Holstein USA, follow along on the Holstein Association USA social media pages and website. You can find us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube with the handle @HolsteinUSA or at holsteinusa.com. As we reflect on 2020 and plan for the year ahead, we continue to be grateful for our members and the work you do every day. Thank you for setting a top-notch example by putting your best foot forward and continuing to provide wholesome, nutritious dairy foods to consumers, even during this challenging time. We look forward to continuing to support you and the Holstein cow we all love in the year ahead.
The team has evaluated physiological responses to heat stress including internal and peripheral temperature, sweating rate and respiratory rate. Future evaluations will include reproduction and lactation records. “It is the size of the project that is the strength that we really have here, and how broad it is,” Dr. Denicol shared. “We are very excited and just really want to see if we can make a difference in heat tolerance by using this mutation which is already in the breed, so it would just be a matter of increasing the frequency of that mutation in the breed.”

MELVOLD HONORED WITH KLUSSENDORF AWARD Ken Melvold of Fresno, CA, was named the 78th winner of the Klussendorf Award, the highest recognition given to a dairy cattle showman in the United States during the 53rd World Dairy Expo in 2019. Melvold is a humble, friendly, and kind human being, and these attributes may mask that fact he is a tremendous cowman and great competitor.
It was during this time that the 78th Klussendorf winner rubbed elbows with the likes of Henry LaFranchi, Stuart Rowe, Harlan Askelson, Al Hay, and many more. As these relationships grew, Melvold would work for such herds as Willomonte in Nevada, Champ Goodwood in Missouri, Dreamstreet in New York, and Bottema Farms in Indiana. Melvold also worked with some of the best herds throughout California and assisted or managed hundreds of sales in all dairy breeds throughout the U.S.
Most importantly, if success is measured by friendships gained and grown throughout the years, few in dairy circles could match this Melvold’s success. Simply If success is measured in miles traveled, stated, Ken Melvold few can match Melvold’s odometer from is one of the most popular people in our boxcar to airplane. business.
This year’s winner showing experiences started like many others with a 4-H project and progressed from there. During college, Melvold worked with the Piney Hill West show herd, traveling up and down the California circuit. The string would show all summer and end up at the California’s Cow Palace and then on to Waterloo, Iowa, If success is measured in ribbons, banners, at the National Dairy Cattle Congress.
