“Geography

has made us neighbours. History has made us friends. Economics has made us partners. And necessity has made us allies.”

FROM THE EDITOR

FRIENDS AND FAMILY

Over the past few years, we’ve covered many topics in this editorial space. It’s usually just my thoughts and musings on things in the dairy cattle business, but sometimes ranging farther afield. It’s purposely been a non-political zone. Like the general population at large, the political views in the dairy industry spans the spectrum right to left, and that diverse opinion is a good thing.

I have my own beliefs, but above all, I think politicians come calling to agriculture shortly before elections to promise the moon. After the ballots are counted, most elected officials in Washington DC have a hard time remembering rural zip codes.

Frankly, I view politicians with a fair dose of skepticism from the outset. The new administration in town seems determined to shake things up, which is good; but I’m not sure they have a formulated plan behind that, which is bad. One thing I am sure of: don’t alienate the very best friends and neighbors the U.S. has in the very first week.

Canada has been our stalwart supporter, neighbor, and friend. They have marched into battle and gone to war for us. They have lost their soldiers’ lives in fights that were not their own and that they did not start because they were our staunchest ally.

We share the longest peaceful undefended border in the world. Nearly $2.6 billion a day in goods and services trade cross between our two countries every day. Our economies are intertwined deeply, to the benefit of both.

So what is the point of threatening our best friends with tariffs out of the blue? We’ve been able to negotiate trade agreements with them and our neighbors to the south; the last one negotiated when this very administration was last in office. Why insult them with the prospect of ‘making them the 51st state’? Canada is a free, proud, sovereign nation. Even if it’s a joke, it’s rude and disrespectful. Canada is pissed at us, and rightfully so.

Like all good friends and neighbors, there are things we disagree on. And as you do with a good friend in person, you step aside with them and have a quiet conversation about it.

You use diplomacy, not stand on a spotlit stage and mock them.

Here in the dairy industry, we may be closer than many to our Canadian counterparts. Our genetics is interwoven since cattle landed in the New World. Dairy cattle move north and south, and that shared genetics has made North America a powerhouse of dairy cattle breeding. How could you separate us? We show at each other’s shows; we buy at each other’s sales; use the sires from each other’s countries.

Beyond that, as people, we’re friends and more. I know of so many ‘mixed’ marriages in our business uniting a US and a Canadian citizen. We tease each other about where the Stanley Cup and the Olympic gold medals land. Tim Hortons or Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts - that’s the arguments we should be having, not making serious economic threats that are driving our strongest ally to look for other friends.

Whether you’re reading this in the US or Canada, remember the bond we have with each other as people. Don’t let the political leaders in either country drive us apart. They’ll be gone in a few years, but we will remain as partners and friends in the dairy cattle business.

With this issue, we’re delighted to feature the All-American Holstein and Jersey contests in their entirety AND we’re thrilled to have partnered with Holstein Canada to present in print a summarized version of the All-Canadian B&W and R&W contests. In keeping with the message of the editorial, it’s fantastic to see animals with show placings from both countries, and the beautiful lineup of Holstein cows on the cover feature those that claimed the dual crowns of All-American and All-Canadian titles!

On March 1st, it will be six years since this publication relocated from Canada to the US. We’re proud and loyal to the Canadian roots of Cowsmopolitan and we’re proud of the growth and expansion we’ve had here in the US. Here’s to our friends. See you at ring side!

102ND ALL-AMERICAN HOLSTEIN CONTEST

This year, in a break with the All-American Holstein Contest tradition, we bring you the All-American Holstein competition in its entirety - nominees and winners. As many long time enthusiasts will know, the Holstein World used to announce the All-American nominations in the January issue, and follow up with the winners revealed in the March issue. Here at Cowsmopolitan, we continued that two-issue structure, but frankly, it didn’t work as well because we are not a monthly publication. The timeline got drawn out from the nominations being announced in December at Nashville to the final winners in print in the Spring issue, which arrives in mailboxes in April.

So, we acted upon some excellent feedback from subscribers, advertisers, and exhibitors and present to you the nominees and winners of the 2024 All-American Holstein Contest! Here at Cowsmopolitan, we continue to see the popularity and enthusiasm for showing registered Holsteins, with numbers holding steady or improving at almost every Holstein show we covered this year.

As always, there are elements affecting the show business from year to year, and in 2024, we saw the number of Canadian exhibitors at World Dairy Expo down about 40% due to concerns with the H5N1 virus. This naturally had an impact on our entries to the contest, not so much in number, but as in geographical spread. We missed seeing our Canadian friends from the Eastern and Western provinces in Madison, but appreciated their efforts to get to their National Show in Toronto. We hope to once again see Canadian entries from coast-to-coast in the 2025 competition!

Entries arrived ‘postmarked’ from exhibitors 15 US states and 2 Canadian provinces. We’re in the era of numerous partnership-owned animals, which makes calculating a top province or state, but Wisconsin, New York, Quebec, Ontario, and Ohio were seen most frequently on the exhibitor list. On the breeder side, Wisconsin, Ontario, and Quebec jostled for the honor of top breeding location with 16 states and 5 provinces credited as breeders of record.

An enjoyable task each year is analyzing the sires of the 102 individual nominees. Again in 2024, the trend continues for the sire net to be cast wider and shallower with 55 different bulls represented by a nominated daughter. Out of that pool of 55, 40 bulls had just a single nomination. Gone, for now, are the days of one bull like Goldwyn, Doorman, or Starbuck

dominating with 25-30% of the nominees. 55 is the largest number we can remember in the current era, and indicates breeders searching near and far for the bulls to make the next ‘good one’.

At the top of the list, and retaining his leading sire crown from 2023, is Farnear Delta-Lambda with 15 nominees (twelve cows; three heifers), followed by Golden-Oaks Master with nine (one cow; eight heifers). After that, it’s a close race between Walnutlawn Sidekick with five (four cows; one heifer), Duckett Crush Tatoo also with five (two cows, three heifers), Woodcrest King Doc with four nominees (three cows, one heifer), and D2 Summerfest CaughtUp with four nominated heifers (his oldest daughters were fall calves).

Two powerhouse showstrings went toe-to-toe on the exhibitor list: Elmvue Farm of Johnstown, NY had seven solely-owned nominations and one owned in partnership, while Butlerview Farm of Chebanse, IL owned six nominees outright, and two in partnership.

Familiar names on the breeder line of the entries include Ferme Jacobs of Quebec as breeder of five individual nominees; Yellowstone Genetics of Utah as the breeder of four individuals and one group; Kingsway Farms of Ontario bred three nominees and three groups; Kings-Ransom Farm of New York and Peace & Plenty Farms of Maryland both bred three individual nominees and two groups.

In early December, judges who officiated at a number of the top shows across the US met in Madison, WI to deliberate on the entries and the potential nominees. This year’s committee included: Eddie Bue, Jamie Howard, Ryan Krohlow, Callum McKinven, Mark Rueth, Jennifer Thomas, and Paul Trapp.

A larger panel of 18 judges then voted for the final award winners you will see on the following pages. The voting record of our judges is posted on the Cowsmopolitan website, and the final numeric totals determined the All-American, Reserve All-American, and Honorable Mention designations.

Once again, we take this space to express our gratitude to the exhibitors who enter this contest, and to the breeders who make it all possible. We hold the stewardship of this competition with equal parts joy and seriousness - a labor of love that we hope continues to benefit the Holstein community. See you at ringside in 2025!

across the breed associations, but it boils down to less than 1% of classified cows ever attain that high number.

Remarkable then, that a small Jersey herd in Tillamook, Oregon has bred 33 cows scored EX-95 or higher to date, with seven of those owned by other breeders. More amazing yet, Ryan and Freynie Lancaster have achieved that in only 20 years of breeding cattle together at Royalty Ridge Jerseys.

The 60-cow all-Jersey herd has been bred with an eye to show ring success, cows that can score high while producing plenty of high component milk, and also with longevity in mind. Currently, the average age of the herd is six years old, with eight cows over ten years of age - the oldest being Family Hill Connect Last Moment EX-95%, clocking in at 18 years old. The classification average is 90.5% with six cows presently in the herd that are EX-95%.

While Freynie Seaholm is a Tillamook native that learned about cows on her grandparents Guernsey farm, Ryan grew up in Washington with his family’s Family Hill Jersey herd in Ferndale, Washington. The Lancasters were well-known on the show circuit in the Pacific Northwest, and Ryan shared the family’s passion. He graduated from Ohio State with a Dairy Science degree, and spent some time on the road, including 2 1/2 years at Pleasant Nook Jerseys in Ontario, where he worked with the late legendary Jersey breeder, Bill Fletcher, who he credits as one of his mentors.

Ryan had taken some cows with him to Ontario, and while there, bred one of the most famous Jersey cows in the breed, Pleasant Nook F Prize Circus EX-97%, out of Family Hill Brook Citrus EX-91%. Born in 1998, Circus moved back to Washington with Ryan, and as she matured, proved to be the cow that would launch the Royalty Ridge herd. Circus was twice National Grand Champion in 2003 & 2006, and was in high demand for sons and embryos. She produced over 30 head of offspring and is in the direct maternal line of influential bulls such as Colton and Casino.

Ryan and Freynie started dating while she was attending Oregon State University, where she graduated with a degree in Agricultural Business Management. They married in 2004, and farmed with Ryan’s family until 2010, when they purchased the Tillamook dairy owned by Freynie’s aunt and uncle, Wayne & Jeanette Krake. “We always wanted to move back to Tillamook,” recalls Freynie. “We had even been looking at farms in the East and Midwest, but with the creamery, Tillamook has such a strong, stable milk market, it gives you the chance to focus on your genetics and other things rather than be worrying about expansion.”

Those were the prime ‘Circus’ years, and they both credit the cow with bringing both cash flow and interested Jersey enthusiasts through the door while still in Washington. When the couple shifted location to Oregon, they started their Royalty Ridge prefix, and Circus made the move with them. Both before and after the relocation, the Lancasters saw the benefit of having a ‘big name’ cow in the barn as it brought

people through the door, where they then discovered other cow families in the herd.

A good example of that phenomenon is their Flower family. In 2006, Lee Mahovlic from British Columbia came to Washington for a visit to see the cows and fell in love with a dark colored senior yearling that Ryan and Freynie were preparing for a spring show. Lee, along with her good friend from the Isle of Jersey, Derrick Frigot, bought in on the yearling, Family Hill Kaptain Farrah. Later that year, Circus was Grand at Louisville, and Farrah stood third in the Milking Yearling class at the show. Farrah developed into an EX-92% cow and was a breeding machine. She was never flushed, but naturally produced three EX-95% daughters that carry the partnership’s prefix: FLM Action Fairy, FLM Big Show Fenway, and most famous, FLM Tradition Flower, sired by an Iatola son out of Circus, Family Hill Cir Tradition. From the moment she first calved, the partners knew they had something special in Flower, and she proved that true when she went undefeated as a Milking Yearling in 2015, winning her class at the Western National, World Dairy Expo, and the All-American Jersey Show. The group added Lee’s sister and brother-in-law, the Phillips, as partners as well at this time. The excitement continued in 2017, when Flower won the National Jersey Jug Futurity, the prestigious 3-year-old futurity class held annually at the All-American Jersey Show.

Flower is a familiar face to thousands of people in the general public as well, as her image graces the entrance to the popular Tillamook Creamery visitor center. She was the star of a 2016 Tillamook Creamery television commercial that aired during the Oscars. “All these people were out here at the farm, and this LA ad executive saw Flower, and said ‘she’s the one we want’. I told him he had a pretty good eye, as she had just been AllAmerican!,” recounts Freynie. “So she was in the commercial, and they wanted to recreate that look when they built the new visitor center in 2018, so they did another photo shoot of her right here in the barn for that.”

There’s plenty of branches of the Flower family in the herd, but Ryan has his eye on a couple of family members that will be part of the Royalty Ridge show string in 2025. “Flower has a Casino daughter, Flowers Casino Royal Flush who is EX-93%. She’s due in April as a 4th calf 5-year-old for this year, so we’re really excited about her. Then, her granddaughter, who’s her roommate in the box stall barn, Flowergirls Andreas Foxglove who is also max scored EX-93%, who will be our aged cow this year,” relates Ryan.

That’s a lot of exposure for the small herd. The Lancasters have maintained about 50-60 milk cows and about the same number of heifers since they established the farm. They have a 50-stall freestall barn, and a box-stall barn with eight cows that stay in that area year round. They farm 50 acres and pasture the herd from March to November, and keep the cows inside during the winter. The young heifers have a freestall/lockup facility while the yearlings are in loose housing. They make their own baylage, and purchase alfalfa and oat hay.

Ryan and Freynie have four children: Logan (18) is a freshman at Oregon State University studying crop and soil science; Tatum (17) is a junior at Tillamook High School; Harper (12) is a 7th grader; and Bode (8) is in the 3rd grade. The farm is family affair with Ryan doing all of the herd management, breeding, scraping, feeding, while Freynie handles the milking and calf care. The kids at home all help with chores when they aren’t busy with school activities, and Logan is in charge of the field work. They don’t have any outside help, but Freynie’s sister and dad help on the farm if they are gone.

When they are gone, it’s usually that they are off to a show. While they are less than two hours from the heavy-hitting Western National Show that takes place in Salem, OR each September, the reality of living on the west coast means long truck rides east each fall. They don’t trust their cows in the hands of just anybody, and rely on their good friends, Mike & Allan Berry, to truck their cattle to Madison or Louisville. “I’ve

known Mike since we were 16 or so, showing Holsteins together in Washington. We’ve been friends for a long time, and actually, he bought his first Jersey from us, a Renaissance daughter of Pleasant Nook Berretta Felice EX-95%, and he’s continued to develop that family. He owns a number of other elite individuals with

With Mike judging the All-American Show in Louisville this past year, the Lancasters thought it would be the right thing to focus on the International Jersey Show in Madison. That effort did not disappoint, as Royalty Ridge Riversong Hero VG-88% won the junior 2-year-old class, and Royalty Ridge RF VIP Friday-ET EX-91% was 5th in the senior 3-year-old class. Those two cows, along with Royalty Ridge Riversong Havanna EX-94%, the winning aged cow at the Western National Show, were all nominated All-American individuals in the 2024 Jersey contest and as a Senior

Hero, a River Valley Victorious daughter, who was voted the 2024 ABA AllAmerican Junior 2-Year-Old, completes 11 generations of VG & EX cows, and is the latest star in a family that has been part of the herd for generations. Freynie won a calf award when she was in high school, and used it to purchase Netties Berretta Holly from her aunt and uncle’s herd. “My aunt’s entire Jersey herd came from John Giacomini’s Clover Blossom herd down in California because my aunt used to work for him at the shows,” explains Freynie. “She went Very Good and had a Barber daughter who was EX-91%. That cow had a Golden Boy heifer, and I gave half of that heifer to my sister, Ahnie, as a present when she graduated from high school, so she’s been involved with the family since then.”

Hero and Havanna are both out of Royalty Ridge Riversong Hazel EX-94%, a Joel daughter that was 3rd as a junior 3-year-old at Louisville in 2019, who is out of Riversong Tequila Haven EX-93%. The family has been bred in line with Ryan and Freynie’s goals. “The way that family is bred from Tequila to Joel to Victorious - those have all been number one type sires in Canada. Hazel herself is due back to sexed Sting. Hero is due back in May carrying a Video female. Hazel’s last daughter is a Video fall yearling that we’re really excited about,” says Ryan. “We also did some IVF work on Hero and we have some Vaden and Kid Rock daughters coming from her.”

They consider First Prize, Comerica, Connection, and Avery to have been past influential sires in the herd, and currently are excited about the young cows and heifers sired by Video, Victorious, Joel, Joyride and Kid Rock. Currently, they are using Sting and Mr. Brown as additional service sires.

The couple is enthused about Royalty Ridge Joyride Big Moment, a senior 2-yearold that calved in December who shows a great deal of promise, and is now owned in partnership with Mike Berry. Her dam, Royalty Ridge Firepower Missy EX-93% was 6th at Madison as a senior 2-year-old. Her grand dam is the 18-yearold matriarch at the farm, Family Hill Connect Last Moment EX-95%. “This cow family goes back to my mom’s parents, who farmed fence line to fence line with us in Washington,” notes Ryan.

With dairy farmers filling the family tree of both Ryan and Freynie, it may have seemed inevitable that they would work with cows too. They’re not sure what their kids will do, but want to keep the farm as an opportunity for the next generation. Freynie has thought about working off the farm, but they would need to downsize the herd to do that, and being on the farm has allowed her to be home for the kids. “Bode has about ten more years until he graduates, so we’ll still be doing this for that long, I think, and then we’ll see where everybody’s at,” muses Freynie. But wherever life takes them after that, there’ll always be the pull of the tanbark trail according to Freynie. “Especially with Ryan and Mike - I don’t think those two will ever stop showing. So no matter what we’re doing, we’ll have some projects or partnership animals at the shows until the very end!”

Another Bonanza Year!

20TH ALL-AMERICAN JERSEY CONTEST

This year, in a break with the All-American Jersey Contest tradition, we bring you the competition in its entiretynominees and winners all together. As mentioned in the Holstein lead, we previously printed the nominations in the Late Winter issue and the winners in the Spring issue, but that stretched the contest out by months after the initial nomination announcement in December. So, with excellent feedback from subscribers, advertisers, and exhibitors, we present to you the nominees and winners of the 2024 All-American Jersey Contest!

Jersey exhibitors once again entered in record numbers, and we’re delighted to continue to see new names on the entry forms. The strength of the Jersey competition is the number and weight of several top national shows from east to west: Louisville, Madison, Salem, West Springfield, to name a few. There’s not a single show that dominates the vote, and we see that in the opinions expressed by our judges when the ballots are returned!

Our nominating committee met in Madison, WI in early December. They thoughtfully and professionally sorted through the large classes in selecting the animals to be nominated. The seven judges on that committee had officiated at several of the best shows in the country: Mike Berry, Kelli Cull, Trent Kilgus, Ryan Krohlow, Callum McKinven, Terri Packard, and Paul Trapp.

Of geographical interest, exhibitors with nominees came from 18 U.S. states and 2 Canadian provinces with Wisconsin tallying the most nominations followed by California and Oregon. For breeders of record on the nominees, Wisconsin again leads the pack, with Oregon and Ontario making strong showing. Animals were bred in 16 states and 3 Canadian provinces. In the leading sire competition, we saw a tie at the top between the reigning champ, Guimo Joel and Mr Kathies Kid Rock, a bull that has been steadily climbing the charts each year, whose oldest daughters were senior 3-year-olds in 2024. Both bulls had 16 nominations to their credit: Joel with 10 cows and 6 heifers, while Kid Rock had 6 cows and 10 heifers. Following those were two constant contenders, River Valley Venus VIP with 13 nominations (8 cows, 5 heifers) and River Valley Victorious with 11 nominees (9 cows, 2 heifers). Overall there were 35 sires represented in the contest.

Several elite show strings were elbowing at the top of the breeder and exhibitor lists. Misty Meadow Dairy of Tillamook, OR holds onto their leading breeder title from last year with six individuals and two groups nominated, followed closely by Ratliff Jerseys of Garnett, KS and Schulte Bros of Watkins, IA, both with five individual nominees and a group class nomination. Vierra Dairy of Hilmar, CA also kept their exhibitor crown intact with seven nominations owned outright along with two owned in partnership. Pushing them along was Ratliff Jerseys with six solely owned nominees and two partnership animals. Misty Meadow Dairy, Budjon-Vail, Kash-In Jerseys, and River Valley Farm all jostled together with four nominees.

The larger voting panel of 20 judges returned their ballots in January, and you see their decisions for All-American, Reserve All-American, and Honorable Mention titles on the following pages. The voting record of our judges is posted on the Cowsmopolitan website.

We want to express our appreciation to our judges for taking the time to deliberate carefully over the nominees to select our winners. A judge’s obligation does not end when they exit the ring on show day, but also includes thoughtful decision making when voting for year-end titles. The Jersey contest is highly competitive, and placings can vary from show to show, so we appreciate the expertise of both our nomination committee and our larger voting panel.

A huge, heartfelt thank you to all of the exhibitors who entered the 2024 competition. Your continued and growing support of the contest keeps it vibrant, and adds value to the registered Jersey market. We are also grateful to the breeders across North America who keep the good ones coming across the colored shavings each year - we tip our hats in awe of the cattle you keep producing!

Another thank you to everyone that keeps the shows rolling and gives them coverage! We are grateful for our colleagues in the dairy media business that cover shows we can’t; we’re thankful for the professional photographers that capture the animals on show day; and to all the video people, show chairmen and volunteers, table clerks, show catalog makers, etc. - we see your hard work throughout the show season and we respect and value it! See you at ringside in 2025!

OPSAL-JH GENETICS

On The Journey with Brown Swiss

purchase his first Brown Swiss, Dublin-Hills Persephone when he was 19. Joey was determined to use that grant money wisely.

that prize, but the water’s deep at Madison, and they knew everything would have to go just right.

And go right it did - by the end of the heifer show on Tuesday evening, nine heifers carrying the Opsal-JH prefix stood in the top ten, including two class winners. Joey (27) and Hayleigh (30) must certainly be amongst the youngest couples to capture a Premier banner at World Dairy Expo. This successful 2024 show season added an additional 14 All-American nominees to the couples roster. Totaling 37 in four breeds since joining forces four years ago.

For two people who had both grown up with Holstein roots, the path to breeding and exhibiting big-time Brown Swiss is speckled with good advice from mentors and a lot of hardwork, resilience and determination!

Joey grew up in Blue Mounds, WI, a half an hour west of Madison, on his family’s Opsal’s Ridge Registered Holstein farm. His dad, Troy, was an active marketer and did his flush work at Sunshine Genetics in Whitewater, WI. At Sunshine, Dr. Chris Keim was a Brown Swiss enthusiast and breeder, and convinced Troy to put in a Swiss embryo on shares which resulted in the first Brown Swiss at the Opsal operation. A few years later, Rayme and Kristin Mackinson boarded a few Swiss cows at the farm, and Joey credits them to really introducing him to the breed. In 2017, the Mackinsons encouraged Joey to apply for the Nelson McCammon Share-A-Heifer grant offered by the Wisconsin Brown Swiss Association, which allowed him to

“I wasn’t overly excited with anything I was finding in a few sales that spring, and then I saw Persephone as a summer yearling in the Kentucky National Sale, and I bought her over the phone. That was a little intimidating - that my first purchase I never even saw in person! When I saw her for the first time, I was very satisfied with my purchase...and the rest of her story is history,” says Joey.

And history it is - Persephone has matured into a 2E-90 powerhouse of a brood cow. She has had five daughters nominated (two All-American and two Reserve All-American) and a total of 15 All-American nominations between daughters, granddaughters and Junior Best Three groups consisting of her offspring. Two of her daughters, both sired by Foremost, were Expo class winners and All-Americans in 2024: Opsal-JH BR Photo Finish-ETV, the winning spring calf; and Opsal-JH BR Picturesque-ET, the winning winter calf.

That’s quite a track record for the first animal purchased for a foray into a new breed, but Brown Swiss have captured the hearts of Joey and Hayleigh. The goal of their breeding program is to push and elevate each new generation to be more competitive in all aspects than the one before it. Heifers that are correct and balanced and that excel in high style and femininity fit the bill for the show ring, but they also want those heifers to have the traits to develop into successful, long-lived milk cows with efficient production and exceptional udders.

Joey & Hayleigh currently reside on the family farm in Blue Mounds, WI, where they collectively milk around 50 head with Joey’s father Troy. Within the herd, they have around 20 cows, predominantly Brown Swiss and Holsteins with a few Jerseys

We always like to tell youth members that we work with that you don’t need to go out and spend a high dollar amount of money to win. Find a heifer that has the parts and the pedigree and put in the work! You’ll be amazed what can come of it!”

and Red & Whites as well. All of the two-year-olds are classified Very Good, and all of the second lactation and older cows are Excellent, including Smith-Hollow Stanleycup Lania EX-95 (Holstein), Claytoncrest Salsa-Red EX-94 (Red & White), and Sugar & Spice Colton Vanish EX-93 (Jersey).

Lania, Salsa, and Vanish were all purchased as calves by Hayleigh before she and Joey met. Hayleigh is a native of western Michigan, and grew up showing animals from her grandparents’ registered Holstein farm in Allendale, MI. They eventually sold the 50-cow herd, but kept some dry cows and heifers, so Hayleigh could stay involved while she was in college at Michigan State University. Her introduction to the Brown Swiss breed came with the purchase of Siegerts Power Merry, who was the Reserve All-American Winter Calf in 2017 and the Reserve All-American Winter Yearling in 2018. Merry matured into an EX-91 cow for the couple.

Joey credits Hayleigh with having a knack to pick out the good ones at a young age. “She buys these calves - some of them quite cheap - and they end up being high-scoring cows that are insane matriarchs! The Jersey, Vanish, is the dam of Viva Las Vegas, who was AJCA Reserve All-American Fall Calf, and nominated ABA Fall Calf in 2024 for Ela-May Genetics in Wisconsin. We always like to tell youth members that we work with that you don’t need to go out and spend a high dollar amount of money to win. Find a heifer that has the parts and the pedigree and put in the work! You’ll be amazed what can come of it!”

Moving back and forth between the different breeds, especially from a show preparation standpoint, can be difficult. “It can be a challenge, but also rewarding,” says Hayleigh. “We treat each animal as if they are their own individual athlete and curate a diet and program that is tailored to help them reach their potential.”

Like many couples in the business, Joey and Hayleigh met at the shows, started dating, and eventually Hayleigh moved to Wisconsin where Joey was farming with the family operation. They combined her herd with his, and continued to invest in what they saw as high-value individuals. They purchased Shelburne Carter Dell as a 4-year-old in 2021. At that time, she was carrying a calf that would become Shelburne BR Dells Designer *NP, the All-American Winter Yearling in 2023 after winning her class at

They never completely left the Holstein game, and last summer, along with Rayme and Kristin Mackinson, they purchased Ms Emoji Femfatal Exotic as a young calf. A Thunder Storm out of Floydholm Mc Emoji EX-95, she went on to place 5th in a very large winter calf class at the International Holstein Show, and was nominated All-American. “She checked all of the boxes for us when we are looking to add a new female to the herd,” says Joey. “We’re pretty selective. We focus a lot on pedigree, as we want to see the evidence that they have the background to develop into an exceptional cow that will transmit. We look for those females that have the ‘wow’ factor. We love to purchase animals that we feel have potential and can be developed into the next level.”

Joey credits the Mackinsons with not only getting him more deeply involved with Swiss, but also with helping him select the initial matings while he learned the genetics and bloodlines. An early result was Opsal-J C Picture Perfect, a Cadence daughter of Persephone, who was his first All-American nominee and is now scored EX-92. From Rayme and Kristin, they acquired RK

American as a couple, Opsal-J Fuel My Fire, the unanimous AllAmerican Fall Calf in 2022, now VG-88 at 2 years, and placed

Joey & Hayleigh with Shelburne BR Dells Designer, Junior Champion of the International Junior Brown Swiss Show & Reserve Junior Champion of the Open Show at Madison in 2023 .

We just hope to continue to grow, learn, and to do our best to achieve the goals we’ve set for ourselves, God willing. We all chose a tough lifestyle; we need to do our best to stay unified, and remember at the end of the day, we all share the same passion and love for the dairy industry.”

Another couple that has become good friends are the Scotland-based Brown Swiss breeders, Jonny Lochheaad and Jessica Miller of Kedar Brown Swiss, a relationship that started online. “A few years ago, we reached out to Jonny on Facebook - they own the Kedar Rhapsody cow that’s EX-95 and she’s one of my all-time favorite Brown Swiss cows,” related Hayleigh. “We were curious about embryos they had for sale. That led to a longer conversation, and when, unbeknown to us, they came to Expo the next fall, we just all really hit it off in person. They made our string their home base, they helped us out, and it formed a really solid friendship. We partnered on some embryos from Rhapsody, and now, Jessica is judging the Intermediate Division of Youth Showmanship at Expo and we couldn’t be more proud!”

They also use Facebook, along with Instagram, as a marketing tool for their OpsalJH Genetics, as well as consigning to sales, and holding their own online tag sales - the next of which is scheduled for March 1st, with about a dozen head on offer. It’s a tough decision for the couple which ones to sell and which ones to keep. “We are proud of them all!,” laughs Hayleigh. They’re really happy with their group of yearlings, but want to see their genetics go on to do big things for other people who love the breed as much as they do.

Along with his cattle knowledge, Joey is also a talented photographer and graphic designer. Cowsmopolitan has used his skills many times for photo shoots and cover shots, and he does some ad design for a few clients. He went to school at Madison Area Technical College and received a two-year degree in Photography. “I’m not doing as much photography right now as I’d like to be, as I have been busy working and prioritizing our animals. But, at some point in the near future, I’m hoping to dive back into it full force. Right now, my main creative outlet is designing ads and other graphics for fellow breeders.

Hayleigh works remotely as the Marketing and Customer Relations Manager for New Generation Genetics, the Brown Swiss sire marketing company based in Wisconsin. In addition to the marketing responsibilities, she ships out much of the semen to customers from their home in WI.

That job makes it handy to keep up on sires, and they are using New Generation bulls Ray, Halano, and Camilo that hail from European bloodlines. Sires that have previously made an impact on their Brown Swiss herd include Brown Heaven R Famous, Cutting-Edge T Foremost, and Brown Heaven First Choice, who has been siring a number of exciting two-year-olds that are recently fresh.

The couple got married last July, and look forward to one day starting a family. “We’re so thankful to everyone who has supported us to continue chasing our dreams and overcoming challenging hurdles,” says Hayleigh. “Jay & Kristy Ackley, Delbert & Heather Yoder, and Josh & Melissa Haag are just a few that have given us guidance, patience, knowledge, and love - having these incredible people around is what it’s all about!”

It can be a winding road for those people dedicated to the show business, and not an easy one at times, but Joey and Hayleigh have the determination and the desire to continue their success. Hayleigh acknowledges there will be better and worse days on the journey. “We just hope to continue to grow, learn, and to do our best to achieve the goals we’ve set for ourselves, God willing. We all chose a tough lifestyle; we need to do our best to stay unified, and remember at the end of the day, we all share the same passion and love for the dairy industry.”

Joey & Hayleigh Opsal were married in July 2024 and shared their special day not only with friends and family, but their four-legged family as well!

Holstein Canada proudly presents the 2024 ALL-CANADIANS

The 2024 AllCanadian contest marks the fourth year that Holstein Canada has organized the contest after taking it over from the Holstein Journal, who founded and conducted the competition from 1942 through 2019.

When the same two bulls are named Premier Junior Sire and Premier Overall Sire at both World Dairy Expo and the Royal, it should be no surprise they were also the leading sires in the All-Canadian contest. Farnear Delta-Lambda-ET had 18 total nominations, including three AllCanadians and an additional five more daughters named Reserved or HM. Premier Junior Sire, Golden-Oaks Master-ET, had 10 total nominations.

Renowned Dairyman, Judge & Fitter Honored with Lex Bunn Award

MATT TEMPLETON, VIEW FORT HOLSTEINS & JERSEYS

In the sports world, Vince Lombardi and John Wooden were legendary coaches who emphasized mastering the fundamentals. In the dairy industry, Arthur Klussendorf, Curtis Clark, John Dennison and Lex Bunn were some of the most respected showman and dairymen of their days for their ability, sportsmanship, and dedication to the dairy cow. To be recognized as a winner of any of these awards is a lifelong goal for many, but few have achieved. At this year’s International Dairy Week, the Lex Bunn Award was presented to Matt Templeton of View-Fort Holsteins & Jerseys of Victoria, Australia. For those who know and have worked with Matt, this honor comes as no surprise, as he has dedicated his life to the dairy cow and continues to set an example for many in dealing with life’s challenges head on and not backing down in the face of adversity.

Matt grew up on his family’s dairy farm in Nar Nar Goon and began at a young age fitting cattle and working at the shows. He attended IDW yearly, helping strings and met several fitters from North America during that time. Because of them, he was eager to travel abroad as well. In 2001, 18-year-old Matt won the IDW Youth Ambassador Award and booked his flight to North America with the award money. Matt was probably the first Australian to truly make a career of fitting cattle, being on the road nine months of the year for nearly 15 years. He worked internationally for some of the best herds in the business, preparing countless Expo, Royal, and European winners. “A cow I really enjoyed getting ready and learned a lot from was Penlow Georgette Outside. She was just a cow that loved to eat. Whatever you put in front of her, she would eat. And she had a beautiful rib structure for her time,” Matt recalled. “I first met Gerald Coughlin in 2003, and he’s been so good to me and has a heart of gold. He never did anything fancy - he had a hose, buckets and hay. It was all about the cow and how she behaved. I was able to be at Trent Valley when he owned cows like Georgette Outside and Terrason Allie. He just taught me so much about the basics and keeping it simple.”

Matt continued, “Another cow was Tahora Goldwyn Toni in New Zealand. The way that cow was made and how easy she was to

work with and get ready puts her in my top 5.” “I also had the privilege of working with {RF} Goldwyn Hailey the year she was Supreme at World Dairy Expo, under the care of Budjon Farms.”

Attending IDW was always a priority for Matt and over the years, he’s exhibited and fitted numerous champions. “The cows from home all have a soft spot too,” Matt offered. One of his favorites was Fairvale Morty Lady 51, a 2X IDW Supreme Champion and the first Holstein to classify EX-97 in Australia. She was owned with Lisa & Willy McCay and Lindsay & Sandra Thompson. Another favorite was Avonlea Reginald Jacobinia (EX-91-2E), Supreme Champion in 2020, and bred & owned Supreme Champion View Fort Dictator Dottie (EX-93-3E).

Matt also credits a few special people for his overseas experiences. ”Tom & Kelli Cull from Budjon Farms - I really admire just they way they have evolved their business from when I first was around over the last 25 years. Not only are they

Left, Matt Templeton made a career of fitting cattle and traveled internationally for 15 years. At right, Matt leads View Fort Lambda Butter to a first place win in the junior 3-year-old class, and eventually to a National Grand Champion

still breeding tremendous cows, but creating a ‘franchise’ with their boarding program, and opportunities for other breeders and people who don’t necessarily have their own farms. That business model and structure are second-to-none. I worked for them a long time. Tommy is one of the best ‘cowman’ I’ve had the pleasure to work with and he’s taught me a lot.”

“When it came to the fitting and clipping side of things, Joel Kietzman was a massive influence. When I first went over to America, we were on the road together for six months together. We went to every district show, small sale, it didn’t matter. ‘Kietz’ didn’t need to prove himself, every week we’d be clipping somewhere, and that definitely taught me a lot about getting hair off and working with cows. He’s become a great friend and it doesn’t matter how long we between talking. I don’t think anyone will ever surpass ‘Kietz’ in the fitting world.”

“Nathan Thomas and Pat Conroy were fitters when I first started overseas too. To be able to work with them was a great experience, and I’d call them friends today. It’s really just a great industry to be in.”

While Matt was traveling internationally, his roots would always be planted firmly in Australia. He met Nicola Paulger at the shows and they were married in November 2018. While Nicola’s family operated Adadale Jerseys and Holsteins in Queensland, she made the 2200 km move and she and Matt partnered with his parents, Bruce and Jan, on their farm in Victoria. In 2024, Matt and Nicola expanded their operation and purchased a new farm in Dixie, Victoria, where they milk 350 cows with 600 head on the farm.

“Our breeding goals are like many others around the world,” commented Matt. “It’s just a functional dairy cow. We try not to concentrate on the extremes anymore, especially now that genetics have come along way. We look for a cow that suites our system, which means they can walk, because we still have cows out on pasture for grazing, they have a nice foot angle and rump structure. I think it all goes hand-in-hand. Dad always said to concentrate on the average of the family, that’s when you can have good ones come through.”

And Matt and Nicola have certainly had many “good ones” come through. They exhibited the Holstein Grand Champion at IDW in 2020, 2022 & 2025. In addition, they had eight View-Fort bred animals place in the top 10 and they exhibited 5 milk cows in the top 3 at this year’s show. Having success at the shows isn’t possible without putting the work in at home, however. “Feeding is a big thing when it comes to developing animals. It’s not just one day of the year. It can start when they are born. You just have to find the program that fits,” Matt remarked. “For us, its just consistency, doing it every day, making sure they

don’t miss a day here or there, to try and develop the cow the best you can, and that’s the model we work with.” At the shows, they try and keep it simple. “Every cow has her own needs, and figuring out what she needs to reach full potential is just part of the game, and you need to work that out for yourself.”

The View Fort show team is certainly no stranger to the blue ribbons or purple banners, having exhibited three Grand Champions and two Reserve Champions over the last five years, but Matt and Nicola are still humbled by the success they have garnered. “Just to be able to win with our cows is very special. We’ve worked hard for it but you still have to have everything fall the right way. There’s only one judge on the day.” Two of those champions are homebred, so they are bit more special to Matt and Nicola.

This year’s Grand Champion, View Fort Lambda Butter (VG-88), was the winning junior 3-year-old and is owned in partnership with Avonlea Holsteins. She is backed by 11/12 generations of VG/EX dams. The Reserve Senior Champion, Fairvale Solomon Melody 897 (EX-92-2E), hails from the tremendous Fairvale herd that was dispersed in 2017. “These are the kind of cows that we want to breed from. We’ve gone forward the last few years, just the way they are made, they are on a level up with the previous cows that have won.”

While the show team and dairy at home have always been the focus, Matt and Nicola have had to face serious health issues in the meantime. Matt was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of cancer just a few months after they were married, and the battle has been arduous. Friends and family have been at the forefront of the battle, either helping on the dairy, or helping with their two young daughters, Geri & Harlie. In November 2024, the Australian dairy industry rallied behind Matt and Nicola and strongly supported the Victories of View Fort Sale,

For us, its just consistency, doing it every day, making sure they don’t miss a day here or there, to try and develop the cow the best you can, and that’s the model we work with. Every cow has her own needs, and figuring out what she needs to reach full potential is just part of the game, and you need to work that out for yourself.”

- MATT TEMPLETON -

she is a daughter of IDW Supreme Champion View Fort Dictator Dottie (EX-93 3E). Grand Champion of the 2025 Youth Show, View Fort Tatoo Pink, exhibited by Shae Tweddle, also sold through the sale, and placed 2nd in the junior 2-year-old class during the open show. View Fort Hanky Panky also sold through the sale and was named HM Junior Champion for her new owner, Darren Crawford, at IDW. She is a granddaughter of All-American T-Triple-T Dundee Paige (EX-96). View Fort Jagger Satin was sold earlier in the year to the partnership of Salmon, Patten & Moscript, and she placed 2nd to Lambda Butter and took home Reserve Intermediate Champion honors as well. “We said we were going to sell our best during the sale, so it was really great to see our prefix represented so strongly at this year’s IDW.” View Fort also had the winning breeder’s group at the show, another testament to their tremendous outing! Even with the selling many of their show prospects, Matt is excited about several others that are still on the farm today. Dictator Dottie has a VG-88 High Octane daughter that’s breeding well that they hope to see more daughters develop from. Avonlea Reginald Jacobonia (EX-91 94-MS), Supreme at IDW in 2020, has a promising VG87 Delta-Lambda daughter that they are breeding from as well. Descendants of Avonlea Robthom Connie 2 (EX-93 3E), IDW Supreme Champion in 2009, and Morty Lady, are also numerous on the farm. “At the end of the day, you still have to have strong cow families to have that sort of success,” Matt added.

Most recently, Matt had the honor of judging the National Jersey Show at IDW, in which he remarked throughout the show was one of the finest Jersey shows ever at IDW, with the top cows being able to compete anywhere in the world. “Being a judge here was a dream come true,” Matt commented. “I’ve had the privilege of judging internationally, but to be asked to judge in your home country for the National Show, and a show I’ve been coming to for nearly 30 years, is very special. To be able to place the cattle in front of my peers and people I’ve looked up to my whole life has certainly been an honor. I’ve been judging since I was 16, and to work your way up to this, it’s the pinnacle.”

Matt’s health struggles were also the driving force in getting the show team to this year’s IDW. “Showing isn’t a hobby or a holiday for Nicola and me,” remarked Matt. “It’s a part of our business. For me to have the opportunity to judge and still show our Holsteins was definitely a driver the last few months.”

I don’t think it matters what you want to do in life. Whether it’s judging a local show, be Champion at IDW, or whatever it is in athletics or the like, unless you have the right mindset and the ‘get up and go’ to work hard, I don’t think it’s going to happen. If you’re standing still, you’re not moving forward.”

Matt’s accomplishments reach beyond the show ring. He has garnered an impressive judging career that includes the Ontario Summer Show, World Dairy Expo, and numerous Royal Shows across Australia and New Zealand. He was also the first Australian to judge at the Wisconsin Championship Holstein and Jersey Shows and the first to be on the All-American voting panel. He has also served as the Overall Judge for the Australia-Wide On Farm Competition and the All-Australian Photographic Competition.

At the conclusion of the Jersey show, IDW co-founder Brian Leslie, took the mic and spoke of a young boy who had attended IDW for years and built an internationally known fitting and judging career along with a tremendous herd of cattle. It didn’t take long for the crowd to gather that Brian was speaking of Matt, and soon he presented him with the Lex Bunn Award.

“It’s something I would literally never think of receiving,” Matt said. “Lex used to supply all the hay for IDW, and he’s made some of the best hay I’ve ever seen, and he was quite the showman with his Ayrshires from what I’ve been told, so to be recognized with his award is quite an honor.”

“I don’t think it matters what you want to do in life. Whether it’s judging a local show, be Champion at IDW, or whatever it is in athletics or the like, unless you have the right mindset and the ‘get up and go’ to work hard, I don’t think it’s going to happen,” Matt emphasized. Matt and Nicola are looking towards the future, whether with another sale in a few years, or new business ventures with their farm. “If you’re standing still, you’re not moving forward.”

Afterword: Sadly, Matt lost his battle with cancer on February 20, 2025. Our condolences to his family and friends.

Matt & Nicola along with their daughters, and Matt’ parents Bruce & Jan at the Victories at View Fort Sale in November 2024.
IDW Co-Founder Brian Leslie congratulations Matt Templeton on being named the 2025 Lex Bunn Award winner after he judged the National Jersey Show.

HANKS WINS POWER OF WOMEN IN DAIRYING AWARD AT IDW

Fiona Hanks received a standing ovation as she was announced the 2025 Bette Hall Power of Women in Dairying Award recipient at this year’s International Dairy Week 35th Year Anniversary Dinner.

There wasn’t a more fitting setting to celebrate this honor, than being surrounded by her family, friends, work colleagues and the dairy community, which she selflessly supports and gives her all to.

Fiona has become an essential part of the dairy industry, especially within the registered sector. Her involvement in the industry began early, growing up on her family’s dairy farm ‘Wellcoora Holsteins’ in the Western District. In her younger days Fiona was very involved in local shows and calf days; her ability saw her winning with dairy cattle at an even higher level and quickly became in demand as a ‘go to person’ to prepare quality cattle.

In 1997, Alan Fisher of Ashbury Holsteins engaged Fiona’s services to take a complete string of cows to the Melbourne Royal. This show led to success with Ashbury Silver 210 winning the 3 Year Old In Milk, a great achievement for Fiona in her early teens. It wasn’t long after, Fiona was traveling to shows all over Australia, as far as North Queensland.

Fiona attended her first IDW with Peter & Ann Scott of Cobrico Holsteins at an early age. When Brooklane Belt Jemima was purchased as a yearling at the 1997 IDW sale, Fiona and Jemima had immediate success together. But the highlight was when Fiona prepared and led her to victory in 1999 at IDW, winning Intermediate Champion. Little lady, big cow, it sure was a great sight.

The following year Fiona was a worthy winner of the RAB Youth Ambassador Award, which included an exchange trip to Canada. Fiona has lived and breathed her mentor Sheri Martin’s drive and passion for youth development, walking step for step in Sheri’s footsteps. Fiona headed up a committee in the Western District, launching and running four successful Youth camps each year in January until Covid hit.

Through the years Fiona worked alongside Daryl Brown and Brian Leslie at Alta Genetics, being hired not only as a sales rep but also to design their catalogs and adverts. Brian and Daryl say nothing was a problem for Fiona to do and as usual it was her pleasure as she just made things happen. Following Brian and Daryl’s departure from Alta, Fiona remained on as a breeding adviser.

One such herd was that of Mac & Deb Jones, the dispersal sale of that very herd remains the record priced commercial herd of way over 400 head, a testament to Fiona’s ability.

In later years of staging IDW, Fiona was a major part of assisting the manager at the time with Robyn Barber organizing the daily running of the event, this she did to perfection. Fiona is still an integral part of IDW today. Taking photos, compiling results, a Power of Women in Dairying committee member and so much more.

Working with three major Australian AI companies she is also sought for independent work. Fiona’s skill in graphic design with AI publications, sale catalogs and adverts, along with her photography help elevate the Australian dairy industry to the world.

Additionally, Fiona and husband Craig run their own innovative business and volunteer within their local community. Fiona is considered a ‘guardian angel’ for her good friends Matt & Nicola Templeton and their young family.

With Matt Templeton receiving the Lex Bunn in the same year as Fiona receiving the Bette Hall, it was indeed extra special for these good friends to enjoy this significant moment together. Both share a similar philosophy that ‘life is not a rehearsal’ and it is important to keep moving forward.

There are many layers to this amazing lady, passion and motivation key along with many acts of kindness, Fiona Hanks is truly one of the great people in this industry and without doubt a very well deserved winner of the Bette Hall Award. Fiona was nominated by Beck Robertson who said: “If we could all put a little bit of Fiona in our lives the world would be a better place.”

2024 HIGH RANKING BAA LISTS

Holstein Association USA is excited to announce the top Holstein Breed Age Average (BAA%) herds for 2024 classifications. This recognition highlights the outstanding dedication of Holstein breeders nationwide who participate in the Classic or Standard options of the Holstein classification program.

“With the Classic and Standard program options herds receive a whole herd BAA, using each animal’s age and stage of lactation balancing the scale for all animals,” says Amy Fletcher, Senior Manager of Classification Operations. “Congratulations to all the Registered Holstein breeders earning a spot on the Top BAA lists, it is a great achievement.”

In 2024, 924 herds had a BAA value eligible for inclusion in these lists. The average number of cows included in the BAA calculation for the entire group was 66, and the average BAA% was 108.2.
