I
Those 'Seed Corn' Dams!
t’s a delightful discovery when you learn that a fellow dairy cattle breeder also has an interest or passion for other livestock. Over the years, I’ve known ‘cow people’ that had a love for draft horses, pigeons, sheep, pigs, goats - you name it, anything with a pedigree. If you love one type of livestock, you probably can and will find love for another. What’s truly fascinating for me is tapping into the philosophies of ‘master breeders’ of those other species. To my dad’s chagrin, my sister and I always had horses and ponies around while growing up on our Wisconsin farm. From that, in addition to my lifelong love for dairy cattle, I’ve got a horse-shaped soft spot in my heart. After a thirty-year hiatus, horses are now a part of my life again, and in the interest of furthering my equine knowledge, I follow a few horse people on Facebook. One of my favorite pages is the Tamarack Hill Farm page, run by Denny Emerson, an 80-year-old equestrian from Stafford, VT. A former world champion threeday eventer, he’s had a long career, and done about everything you can do in the horse business. Incidentally, he spent his college summers working at Robert Knight’s Green Mountain Stock Farm, which in addition to the world-class Lippitt Morgan horses, was also home to the Lippitt Ayrshire herd - a prefix that can be found in the background of most modern Ayrshire pedigrees. Not long ago, Denny had a post contemplating breeding philosophy: Walter Christensen, from Tasdorf, Germany, was a former coach of the Swedish dressage team, and he was explaining the evolution of dressage horses that he had seen during his lifetime.
Walter said that the early Holsteiners that he remembered from the 1940s and 1950s were big, powerful horses, not much refinement, but plenty of massive strength. Various thoroughbred lines were imported to refine the lines to create lighter and more elastic riding horses, and there was a term used to describe that process, “light on top, heavy on the bottom.”
That referred to the way a pedigree is presented, the stallion above, the mare below, and the “lighter” thoroughbred or Arabian stallion is thus “on top“ with the less refined mare “on the bottom.” The objective being to create the perfect horse somewhere between light and heavy. But here’s the problem, Walter said. In order to have a base of heavier mares, you can’t keep breeding those fillies back and back to the lighter stallions. You need to breed heavy to heavy at least enough of the time to get what Walter called “seed corn,” the bigger mares of substance, and fewer and fewer breeders were willing to do that, because they all wanted performance horses, and were not so inclined to create less commercially popular breeding stock. We see the same situation in other breeds, the quest for refinement to the point that there isn’t much “heavy” left to go back to for replenishment of breed type. The afflicted breeds may include YOUR breed, if you think through breeding trends, and a dilemma for breeders is whether they are willing to sometimes sacrifice short term goals for long term breed continuity. Isn’t that something? You can change the species, but the conversation is pretty recognizable. What do you think of this line of discussion? Are you making some breeding decisions to ensure you have a foundation for the traits that are important to you - making those ‘seed corn’ dams?
Kathleen and her polo partner Tyse. I’d never dream of telling anyone how they need to breed their herd, but there’s some good stuff to ponder here. Actually, I find I’m more willing listen with an open mind when it’s not a dairy cattle breeding discussion - it takes away my pre-determined opinions. Let us know if you’ve ever gleaned a nugget of breeding knowledge from somewhere outside of the dairy cattle world - we’d love to hear the philosophies that have inspired you…or at least challenged you! Turning back to great breeding in our business, let’s tip our hat to the breeders of the outstanding Holsteins and Jerseys in the pages of this issue - featuring the 2021 All-American nominations! Every year, it’s a thrill to sort through the photos and resumes of the entrants, and again this year, we were bowled over by the quality! Take your time to page through and give these girls a look! All-American announcements mean we’re entering the back half of winter! Hang in there, everyone - we’ll see you soon at ringside!

BACK ON TR ACK IN 2021! N
o one was more thrilled than everyone here at Cowsmopolitan to regain a sense of normalcy in the 2021 fall show season. Returning to the ‘big stage’ in Madison, WI for World Dairy Expo, and seeing the show strings from across the US and Canada back in their aisles was a welcome, happy experience. The renewal of shows at Harrisburg, the Big E, and many of our prominent state fairs put the solid structure back into our show season, and we, for one, were happy to see it! The number of entries to this year’s AllAmerican Holstein contest reflected that return to familiar ground. At just over 200 entries for the 20 classes, that total falls in a ‘typical’ number of entries compared to last year’s landslide record number of entries. 2021 nominees came from 14 different states and three Canadian provinces. As always, it is with great excitement, that we present to you the All-American nominees! Since its inception by the HolsteinWorld in 1922, the AllAmerican contest has recognized the very best Holsteins presented in US show rings in any given year. As always, we salute
those breeders, owners, caretakers, and exhibitors of these remarkable animals. The work in breeding and developing these breed celebrities goes on 365 days a year, and while many of the rosettes are harvested in October and November, we know the foundation is being laid right now in every single trip to the barn in the cold and dark. Overall, 44 different sires were represented by nominated individuals. We have a new king at the top of the sire list: Croteau LesPerron Unix, with eleven nominated daughters (nine cows, two heifers). That may come as no surprise following his Premier Sire banner wins at the International Holstein Show and Canadian National Show in 2021, but he dislodges the multi-year sire list champion ValBisson Doorman. Following Unix with ten nominees is Brenland Denver (one cow, nine heifers), then Doorman with eight (four cows, four heifers), and Duckett Crush Tatoo with seven (four cows, three heifers). Butlerview Farm of Chebanse, IL made a notable return to the show ring in 2021 with nine individual All-American
nominations solely-owned, and one in partnership. Following them were several perennial powerhouse exhibitors including: Duckett Holsteins of Rudolph, WI with six outright individual and group nominations and four owned in partnership; Ferme Petitclerc of Quebec with five individual and group nominations and one owned in partnership, and Elmvue Holsteins of Johnstown, NY with four solely-owned individual nominees. Quebec breeders Ferme Jacobs and Ferme Petitclerc each bred four individual nominees and one group, while Tim & Sharyn Abbott of Borderview Genetics in Vermont bred four individuals. This year, six judges from a number of the country’s most prominent shows were asked to be on the committee to ensure every class would have adequate discussion and evaluation. Eddie Bue, Mike Duckett, Lynn Harbaugh, Ryan Krohlow, Chris Lahmers, and Chad Ryan comprised the 2021 All-American Nominating Committee. This group had judged and observed cattle at shows from east to west this year. As advised by Cowsmopolitan/HolsteinWorld in keeping with the contest criteria, the committee based their decisions on three factors: the show placings, the quality of the photo, and their own personal knowledge of the animals. A panel of 19 judges are selecting the final award winners by ballot. Judges are asked not to vote in classes where they have bred or own an animal. The votes will be tabulated with scores of seven points for 1st place votes, three for 2nd, and one for 3rd. The voting record of the judges will be posted on our website and the final numeric totals will determine the All-American, Reserve All-American and any Honorable Mention designations. Winners of the contest will be published in the Spring 2022 issue.

Recollections of the All-American Contests This first issue of 2022 kicks off our year-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of the All-American Holstein contest. In 1921, the Holstein-Friesian World featured a Show Cow of the Year selection after the show season completed. This proved so popular that Maurice Prescott, HWF editor, decided to put together a contest to name the top animal in each age class compiled from all the shows that year. In 1922, there was a nominating and selection committee of one – W. S. Moscrip, who had judged a number of the big shows that year. These post-season awards were a big hit with the breeders, and the scope of the contest was expanded the next year with four judges and the HWF Editor making up the committee. In 1939, the structure was established that looks remarkably similar today – a smaller nominating committee of judges that have officiated at prominent shows from coast-to-coast. Those class nominations are then sent out to a larger group of judges who votes on their top choices for each class. The Holstein World – and now Cowsmopolitan – tabulates the results and announces the winners. Certainly, there have been changes and tweaks along the way. In looking back at the breed history books and old issues of the Holstein World, it’s stunning to see how important and fiercely competitive the bull classes were, including the Get of Sire class. We’ve seen an ebb and flow in the popularity of the current group classes – once highly popular, then discontinued for a time before returning in the 2000s. And, of course, the addition of several more classes for various female age groups over the past few decades. No doubt, the competition will continue to evolve, but the enthusiasm with which it is received by the breeders each year has continued unabated since 1922! As we look forward to publishing highlights of the past century in each issue this year, we thought there was no better place to start than by asking Joel Hastings for some reflections. His family owned and operated the Holstein World, and the aforementioned founder of the All-American contest, Maurice Prescott, was his grandfather and Editor of the World for sixty years. Joel continued the family tradition in his decades at the helm of the Holstein World, both as Editor and Publisher. We will always consider Joel a good friend 42 « COWSMOPOLITAN Late Winter 2022
and mentor, and we’re delighted to share his thoughts here!

In my time, up on Moncony Farms at Spencerport, N.Y. Dick holds the record as the person who His father Warren and uncle Russell, twin
brothers, were leading breeders in New York. Jim went off to Cornell where as a freshman, under the tutelage of judging team coach Professor George Trimberger, he was high individual in the national intercollegiate dairy cattle judging contest. Jim joined the World staff after graduating in 1964. He stayed connected with his family on the farm, helping with sire selection and showing. No doubt the highlight of his career was the breeding and development of the 1970 All-American Senior Yearling, Moncony Ideal Trill. She was one of many All-Americans by her famed sire, Ideal Fury Reflector. From the New York spring show then held in Cortland through the N.Y. State Fair and the Eastern and Central Nationals, Trill was presented by noted showman R. Peter Heffering.
All-Canadian Contest was not one bit less than Jim’s on the U.S. side. Jim had been assisted by World staffers like Carol Moyer who took on more responsibility with Jim’s passing. All of which brings us to our friend and former colleague Kathleen O’Keefe who willingly stepped in during her time on staff and still today brings her knowledge, dedication and enthusiasm for the All-American recognition program. There might be those who comment that I have not named any of the famous and fabulous All-American animals. For me,
my recollections of the greats are from the showring itself, where it was my pleasure and privilege to see and report on top shows from coast to coast, watching at ringside and touring the barns. And I had opportunities to see some of these great winners at home back in the days when fitting was not a year around effort. Here I have tried to share a few recollections of how the contest itself was organized and I thank Kathleen for the invitation. I’m also pleased to extend good wishes to all of the contenders in this year’s contest… the 100th in the series.
Jim was excited to no end especially since she was from his favorite family at Moncony. Her dam, Moncony Aristocrat Tish (2E-90), was by a bull purchased as a calf in New York and developed by the Hills… Council Rock Worthy Aristocrat (EX-91-GM). Twenty-six Aristocrats were cataloged and this family provided the high sellers when Warren and Russell dispersed the herd successfully in the spring of 1971. With a location just west of the city of Rochester, the Hills converted the farm to a beautiful public golf course called, what else, Twin Hills, which is operated to this day by Jim’s brothers. As we’ve said, Jim was the driving force year after year making sure the All-American Contest lived up to the expectations of exhibitors and breeders. Happily for us, he continued with this work even when he left the staff to become the clubhouse and business manager at the golf course. The golf season ended with the onset of winter weather in Upstate N.Y., and he then spent much of the next four months on the AllAmerican, right up until his premature death from cancer at age 63 in 2005. He had devoted his final months to the 2004 All-Americans. Another close connection in those years was with the staff at the Holstein Journal magazine in Canada. The All-American allowed participation by Canadian owned animals qualifying at U.S. shows. Getting all the details on those animals that showed on both sides of the border was helped immeasurably by Journal Editor Bonnie Cooper. Her commitment to the COWSMOPOLITAN Late Winter 2022 » 43

VIERRA DAIRY Show Ring Champions and So Much More!
I
t’s been a big splash! The entry of Vierra Dairy into the show ring pool has been a cannonball of astounding results. In a very short time, high-type and show enthusiasts have heard Vierra Dairy announced as the owner of numerous class winners and champions, including the Grand and Reserve Grand Champion at the International Jersey Show in 2019. They equaled that feat last year in Madison, again exhibiting Grand and Reserve, and adding the Junior Champion Jersey title as well - a historic and unprecedented accomplishment by one show string. And while the ringside has been accustomed to hearing the Vierra name during the Jersey show, 2021 saw the family operation add partial ownership in a couple of high-profile Holsteins to their line up - Oakfield Solom Footloose-ET EX-94, named Reserve Grand Champion of the International Holstein Show, and Ms Beautys Black Velvet-ET EX-95, the winning 5-year-old at Madison. This prominent entrance has turned heads, as has their leap on to the top GJPI male and female lists. How did a dairy that primarily milked grade Holsteins until
2015 make such a dramatic jump start into the genetic heart of the Jersey breed?
It’s not long into a conversation with Peter Cipponeri, who along with his wife Maia, manages the dairy operation in Hilmar, CA, that you learn the wide-ranging goals for the family’s dairy business. The dairy herd itself is now at 6,000 cows (3,000 Jersey and 3,000 Holstein), and general manager Eddie DaRocha oversees the day-to-day operation. Maia’s parents, Matt and Maria Swanson, hold the reins of a number of family enterprises. It’s quickly evident how a strong entrepreneurial streak emphasizing forward thinking and a dedication to excellence colors all of their decision making. Deeply rooted in the California Central Valley, Vierra Dairy originated in the 1940s when Tony and Angie Vierra, like their parents, milked a herd of grade Holsteins. They eventually settled in Hilmar, and over the decades, the herd grew and the farm expanded to 1,500 acres. Their son Anthony and his wife, Marie, were at the helm for much of this growth before passing the reins to their eldest daughter, Maria, who became the fourth-generation Vierra to oversee a dairy.
In 1988, Maria married Matt Swanson, who hails from a family ingrained in this rich agricultural region of California since the late 1800s. The Swansons were one of the premier turkey breeders in the state in the days when the bronze-breasted turkey was the commercial variety of choice even President Truman had a Swansonbred bird during his White House tenure. While the Swansons have founded and expanded other businesses and have moved away from turkey breeding, they still own a number of turkey ranches. Fifty years ago, Matt’s father, Rick Swanson, founded Associated Feed & Supply Company, Inc., which has matured into a leading animal feed manufacturer, with a full line of conventional and organic feed products for a variety of species. The company has dealers throughout the west coast states and additionally in Idaho, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. The passion for production agriculture, obviously, is a motivating factor for every endeavor undertaken by the family. When they made a change in 2016 to begin shipping their milk to the locally-based Hilmar Cheese Company, they quickly recognized the value of adding Jerseys to
the herd, as the processor pays a premium for high component milk. While they hadn’t been at the forefront of genetics with their Holstein herd, the family saw the advantage, and future potential, in buying registered Jerseys from high-production cow families that had been successful in commercial dairy operations. Wally Lindskoog, breeder of the prominent Holstein sire, Arlinda Chief, was Matt Swanson’s great uncle. Before he passed away in 2003, Lindskoog expressed his admiration for the efficiency of the Jersey cow and thought they would be the future of dairying in California. Matt remembered his great-uncle’s desire to work with the Jersey breed, and that had stayed in the back of his mind. There’s no better place than the Central Valley to find Jerseys that have been proven in a commercial environment, and the family found much of their initial foundation stock in the region. They then turned their focus to purchasing some high-genomic heifers from around
the country as they implemented the next step in their Jersey journey - building a genetic breeding program based around a group of elite-tier individuals. They determined that using embryos would be the fastest way to transition from a Holstein herd to a mixed Holstein and Jersey herd while also maximizing genetic gains. With the caliber of donor dams they were tapping, it wasn’t long before the AI studs noticed that Vierra Dairy was drafting quite a lineup of future genetic stars, and they came calling to assist with the venture. After a number of ‘first dates’ with several of the larger bull studs, the Vierra operation found a long-term partner in Semex. “We really found a similar sensibility with Semex,” explains Peter Cipponeri. “They’re a company that’s looking to the future and how our industry is changing with technology. We believe their Immunity+ data has been validated in large commercial herds, and their ai24 heat detection and technical platform has been of great value here.”
Beyond that, Semex handles the genomic testing for the herd through their Elevate platform, and provides a home for the high-genomic bulls produced from the Vierra breeding program. Peter oversees that program and consults regularly with individuals at Semex. “It’s been a fantastic relationship - I visit with Jay Shannon regularly about finding solutions with technology. He, along with Brad Sayles, was instrumental in helping get our program off the ground. Vierra Dairy is where we’re at today because of Semex. Jonathan Merriam, who incidentally is president of US Jersey, is our Semex sire analyst. He lives right around the corner from our dairy, and is the head of the Vierra Dairy account for Semex. Because he has his ‘boots on the ground’ right here, he’s been a huge help in taking things to the next level,” notes Peter. “They’ve all really taught me so much about how to run the genetic operation.”

the part of the business they know best, and we take their advice on which ones to show, which ones need more time, and which ones have moved past the best part of their show career.”

That program is bearing fruit as a number of high GJPI bulls carrying the Vierra prefix are at the top of the index lists and populate the Semex sire catalog. JX Vierra TheBoss {6}-ET is being syndicated through their upcoming Amplify sale and ranks #2 for JPI at +179 with 850 CM$. Vierra Pretenders-ET at +157 GJPI is a popular new Chief son. Vierra TenpennyET at +139 was used heavily and has high ranking sons, Mediator and Mayor, at +161 and +163 JPI who happen to be maternal brothers to TheBoss. Additional popular Vierra bulls like JX Vierra Sinatra {4}-ET and JX Vierra Clapton {4}-ET are siring the next generation of soughtafter bulls like JX Vierra Santana {5}-ET by Sinatra with 26.5 JUI and Jx Vierra ZZTop {5} by Clapton with +156 JPI and +784 CM$. Progenesis Madison demonstrates the success of genetic selection at Vierra Dairy. Not only is she the dam of TheBoss, Mediator and Mayor, her top four sons (by three different sires) who will soon be available average +165 JPI, +755 CM$, +10.5 JUI, +0.1 DPR, +1083M, +59F, +47P, +1.4 PTAT. Vierra genetics are ranking among the elite on both male and female genetic lists. The family hasn’t developed the program to turn a quick buck. “We have a really patient team. We’re want to be here 20 years from now, not just in and out in three years,” emphasizes Peter. He traveled to World Dairy Expo in 2017 and was impressed with how the Sauder family at River Valley Jerseys had developed their vision. “They had it all - the show string, the bulls, the image and marketing,” he remembers. “We came away from Expo 48 « COWSMOPOLITAN Late Winter 2022
that year wanting to develop our own version of that - to build a memorable, high-quality brand.” In the interest of making sure breeders had the maximum amount of information about their sires, every bull mother in the program gets pictured, classified, and an official milk record. That’s no small commitment as over 750 donors are flushed annually - resulting in over 500-plus viable embryos each month. Knowing their IVF program was ramping up to that level, Vierra Dairy partnered with Boviteq in April 2021 to establish a satellite facility in Hilmar. With the genomic program gaining traction, they wanted to build a more balanced genetic portfolio and started considering investing in some high-end show cattle to bolster the type side of things. Their friend and fellow Jersey breeder, Hank Van Exel, advised them to contact Nathan and Jenny Thomas in Ohio, as he considered them the best in the business and had owned show cattle with them in the past. It turned out to be a game-changing recommendation, and a business relationship that turned into a friendship. Nathan and Jenny help assess which cows they should buy, and then take care of the ten best show prospects at any given time at their Triple-T Holsteins and Jerseys establishment in Ohio. “The only way we buy a cow is if Nathan buys her for us,” emphasizes Peter. “They’ve found us some incredible show winners on a very reasonable budget, and then we trust them to take the very best care. That’s
Vierra Dairy handles the reproductive side of the type program and makes about 100 heifer calves a year from those special type cows. “We transfer 30-50 embryos every three months to correspond with the show dates, and that usually results in about 15-30 calves a quarter. The type calves are housed at nearby Boviteq California, where we have Renee Pierick overseeing their progress and development. Nathan comes to Hilmar every couple of months to sort through the calves, and we make a plan for each - which special ones head to Ohio, which are earmarked to sell, and which ones will enter our herd here,” Peter explains. “We bring the dry donors here, the show cows that have finished their careers, and any heifers calved in that don’t look like they’ll get to the ‘first team’ on the show string. We’ll make some more embryos from those cows, and that keeps the numbers manageable for Nathan and Jenny in Ohio.” It’s been a system that has yielded incredible results. Bri-Lin Valson Spritz EX-96% has carried the Vierra Dairy flag and is now a two-time International Jersey Show Grand Champion - both in 2019 and 2021. By her side last October stood Summer Breeze Tequila Gayle EX91%, the Intermediate and Reserve Grand Champion. Add in the Junior Champion, SVHeaths Kid Rock Jaden, and a total of six class winners at the show, and you can see how they easily captured the Premier Exhibitor banner at the show, as they also did in 2019. They had four class winners at the All-American Jersey Show in Louisville, KY as well, so it’s not a big surprise that they were the leading exhibitor of All-American nominations in the 2021 All-American Jersey contest. Peter credits his father-in-law for having a definite philosophy for the kind of cows they want to purchase. “He only wants the great ones. He has a stunning guitar collection, for which he only buys the very best and rarest guitars because that’s what always has value. He sees the cows the same way.” Matt has placed the final bid on some cows that Peter and Nathan thought were too expensive. “We were at the Triple-T & Heath Sale in 2020, and
Milk & Honey Vaden Fern was purchased in the 2020 Best of Triple-T & Heath Sale and went on to be named All-American Junior 3-Year-Old for Vierra Dairy in 2021.
Vierra Dairy joined the Holstein club with their purchase of Oakfield Solom Footloose, Reserve Grand Champion at Madison and All-American 4-Year-Old in 2021.
though we all loved Fern, we thought she had gone too high. Matt kept bidding until we owned her, and that turned out to be a great decision,” laughs Peter. Fern - Milk & Honey Vaden Fern-ET EX91% - won the Junior 3-Year-Old class at Madison and Louisville this year on her way to All-American honors.
cows that have been at that top level for three or four lactations, and that’s a really satisfying feeling,” he says.
It’s the same story with Oakfield Solom Footloose-ET EX-94 at the Duckett Holsteins Summer Selection sale in June 2021. She got into rarefied air price-wise, but Matt was determined that Vierra Dairy would own her. Again, it proved to be another prescient decision. With Duckett Holsteins and Tim & Sharyn Abbott retaining part-ownership, Footloose sailed to a win in the 4-Year-Old class at Expo and was named Reserve Grand Champion of the International Holstein Show. That leads to the question of what the Vierra Dairy plan is for their Holstein venture. Peter states that it’s to mirror the Jersey program. “We have big aspirations for our Holstein program as well. Holsteins were always part of the scene at Vierra Dairy, and now we are investing in them as we did in the Jersey herd. We’ve purchased some high-genomic individuals and want to build the genetic program to make high bulls and heifers, and to have some type females to sell.” Will they ever get to the point where they have ‘enough’ show cows? Peter notes that they stay very open-minded for the next opportunity. “We will always have a spot for the right young cow. We try to add two good young cows every year and then have patience to see how they develop. If you buy the right ones and care for them in the right way, they keep coming back. We’re now showing
With all of the reproduction work happening, it doesn’t take long before the pens are full. Turning to marketing and further development of their brand, the Vierra Dairy crew decided the spring of 2022 would be the perfect time for a sale - specifically on Saturday, March 5th. “We wanted to have an event that headlined the very best cattle, and that would bring people out to the sale. We want people to have a chance to get to know us better and to see what we’re trying to accomplish here,” elaborates Peter. “It’s going to be a two-day event with three meals served each day. On Friday, we’re going to have all-day tours and an open house. On Saturday, we’ll have the cattle viewing and then the sale, which will feature 30 genomic lots, then 60 Jersey and 60 Holstein live lots.” There will be a post-sale concert with Dillon Carmichael, an artist signed on the family’s Riser House record label. What’s that? Their own music company? That’s right! Peter sheds the light on another family enterprise. “My father-in-law’s passion for music is unrivaled. He took the chance to start a record label, signed an artist named Mitchell Tenpenny, who had the great fortune to have a #1 hit with ‘Drunk Me’. ” Headquartered in a beautiful building on Nashville’s famed Music Row, the location is a good jumping off point each year when the Swanson family of companies partners with Semex to host the Nashville Dairy Experience. Beyond their cows on the dairy and the singers in Nashville, family businesses are evolving to keep pace with technology
and the changing environment for agriculture in the coming decades. Gathering their experience as dairy producers and the information gained from their years in the animal nutrition industry, they established the Milc group, which is a platform for cloud-based software that can help drive efficiencies on dairies of any size with herd monitoring, feed management, employee training, herd management, pulsation monitoring and more. Because it is cloud-based, it vastly reduces the implementation cost, and makes it feasible for smaller dairies to benefit from technology previously marketed to larger operations. Even with all the entrepreneurial growth opportunities and the massive number of daily details to handle with the herd, Vierra Dairy is, at heart, still a family business with a love for cattle. “Our twin 3-year-old daughters, River and Reagan, are the fifth generation on a California dairy. Even at their age, they love to go help feed and lead the show calves with Renee,” smiles Peter. “That’s the future we’re building and that we’re looking forward to.” They also try to be a good member of the community by offering public tours of the dairy. They maintain a large and active social media presence where they strive to be transparent, and to arm consumers with facts about concentrated agriculture, and how it can feed a growing world population. Peter advocates the family’s goal for their whole dairy operation. “We try to deliver the great message about milk and dairy products - what a fabulous nutritional product it is. And, most of all, we try to be good stewards of what God has entrusted to us.” By Kathleen O’Keefe
Peter & Maia are thrilled to be raising their twin girls, River & Reagan, as the 5th generation of the family on a California dairy. COWSMOPOLITAN Late Winter 2022 » 49

MORE ENTRIES, MORE DEPTH, MORE FANTASTIC JERSEYS! I
nterest and enthusiasm for high-type Jerseys continues to build, and in 2021, the show rings were full of the beautiful little brown cows! That interest continued into our 2021 All-American Jersey contest, which saw a record number of entries, and happily, numerous entries from firsttime participants in the competition. With the International Jersey Show and the AllAmerican Jersey Show, the breed enjoys two powerhouse events that bring the very best animals into competition. With the heavy-hitting reputation of both shows, this year’s entries carried impressive depth in many classes. Our nominating committee met in December and carried out thoughtful, professional deliberation for each class in examining the photos and the placings from the year’s best shows. Five judges comprised the 2021 All-American Nominating committee: Louie Cozzitorto, Ted DeMent, Michael Heath, Ryan Krohlow, and Chad Ryan. This group had judged and observed cattle from coast-to-coast during the 2021 show season. As advised by Cowsmopolitan in keeping with the contest criteria, the committee based their decisions on three factors: the show
placings, the quality of the photo, and their own personal knowledge of the animals. In the sire race for 2021, Guimo Joel completed his steady climb up the ladder the past few years, and finally sits atop the list with 12 nominees (7 cows, 5 heifers), followed closely by the 2020 king, Rapid Bay Indiana Gentry with 11 nominated individuals (5 cows, 6 heifers). Tower-Vue Prime Tequila flexed his muscles again with 10 nominees (7 cows, 3 heifers). Next are Hawarden Impuls Premier with 7; and Chilli Action Colton and Sunset Canyon Andreas, both with six daughters nominated. ‘Owned by Vierra Dairy’ was announced many times over show ring loudspeakers in 2021, as they had a memorable year on the tanbark. Not surprisingly, the Hilmar, CA-based operation is the leading exhibitor of All-American nominees with nine solely-owned and one in partnership. Pacific Edge of Tillamook, OR entered the contest in a big way in 2021, and were rewarded with six nominees owned outright and three in partnership. Milksource of Kaukauna, WI, the Budjon & Peter Vail partnership of Lomira, WI, and
Misty Meadow of Tillamook, OR followed those leaders - all with six nominations. Pacific Edge, South Mountain Jersey of Boonsboro, MD, Four-Hill Farm of Bristol, VT, and the SV/Heath family operation in Westminster, MD all bred five AllAmerican nominees. They were followed by Ratliff Jerseys of Garnett, KS, and Arethusa Farm of Litchfield, CT, both of whom bred four. A panel of 19 judges are selecting the final award winners by ballot. Judges are asked not to vote in classes where they have bred or own an animal. The votes will be tabulated with scores of seven points for 1st place votes, three for 2nd, and one for 3rd. The voting record of the judges will be posted on our website and the final numeric totals will determine the All-American, Reserve All-American and Honorable Mention designations. Winners of the contest will be published in the Spring 2022 issue to be published in early March. Again this year, a huge thank you to everyone who makes this contest possible! From the breeders, exhibitors, judges, show volunteers, show coverage sponsors - you made 2021 a year to remember in the Jersey breed! By Kathleen O’Keefe

RETSO HOLSTEINS Caring For & Breeding the Next Generation of Great Ones B
etween All-American announcements and Holstein Association USA releasing the top BAA herds for 2021, Retso Holsteins had a lot to celebrate ringing in the new year - nine cows nominated representing four breeds and a national ranking for BAA. And while these stats are impressive, they certainly aren’t the first and won’t be the last that Brian Oster and Cassie Chittenden have worked day in and day out for. Retso Holsteins, located in Schodack Landing, NY, is owned by Brian Oster and Cassie Chittenden. Brian’s family operated a 120-cow Holstein farm in central NY until 2014. Cassie’s family operates Dutch Hollow Farm two miles from Retso with 800 Registered Jerseys with a steeped history in breeding and genetics. Brian and Cassie met at the NY State Fair when Cassie was serving as the NY State Jersey
Queen and Brian was working for Kevin Ziemba. It wasn’t love at first sight then; however, Brian’s airport boredom led him to text the wrong ‘Cassie’ on Cassie’s birthday and a well struck conversation led to their belief that it must’ve been fate! They were married on the farm in June 2018. Brian and Cassie started milking in February 2016 with 6 cows, a portable milk pump, and bucket milkers. Each year, they have grown their operation by filling another section in the barn. Brian’s main role is overall cow and herd management along with client management including cow movement (incoming/outgoing), IVF/embryo work coordination, and overall day-to-day operations. Cassie oversees the calf and heifer program and manages all aspects associated with financial management. Retso also employs Bob and Serafina who assist with the day to day operations on the dairy; Bob with the cows and Serafina with the calves. Currently, they milk 90 cows spanning numerous breeds, with an RHA of 23,312M 3.9%F 3.3%P. The herd consists of 35 Excellent and 40 Very Good cows, and since they began in 2016, they have had 18 94-point, 17 93-point, and 10 89-point first lactation cows call Retso home, many of whom received those scores in their care. Over the last 5 years, 105 EX cows have made their home at Retso. These outstanding scores have also earned them a 113.5 BAA on 48 cows, which ranks them 19th nationally for herd size and 5th regionally. They have been in the top 20 nationally since Ms Ranson-Rail Beth-Red-ET (EX-91) was housed at Retso during the 2020 show season, ending in a Reserve All-American title. She was also the cover girl for the December 2020 Blondin Sires’ directory. Photo © Julie Ashton.
they began milking. “For us, a 113.5 BAA is impressive when 40% of our herd is 2-year-olds,” commented Brian. Along with a barn of high-scored animals, All-American nominations are also warranted. Since its inception, Retso has accumulated 33 All-American or Junior All-American nominations. In 2021, they added 9 nominations in four breeds. And for Brian and Cassie, these results are icing on top of a cake of hard work and determination. Retso was created with the intention of boarding cattle for others. “Our original goal was that we would be pleased to have 50% our animals and 50% board cows and to fill the barn half way in total. We started boarding cattle for close friends, including our mentor Kevin Ziemba. Along with him, he brought his contacts that he had previously boarded cattle with as well as his network. Over the years, our growth was simply due to word of mouth and producing results seeing that we didn’t start Retso’s active Facebook page until 2018. For the last year we have remained at having roughly 50 clients and 70 board animals in total. Our mentality has always been the same since day one, to treat each cow as if they were our own, and manage our client relations with transparency. Cows have always been our bread and butter; however, we have started to board more calves on milk and donor heifers over the last couple of years,” according to Cassie. Brian and Cassie expanded on how they work with the clients on cow management and breeding decisions: “Every client is different and takes different roles in the breeding and development of their cattle. We have some who are very hands-on, and others that are completely handsoff and have the viewpoint of ‘I pay you to handle all of it’ with the overarching common goal for the cow to excel. We try to manage expectations honestly, but
Above all else, our goal and philosophy is to create an environment where each cow has the ability to excel and reach her full potential.” first and foremost ask the client what are their expectations for the cow and her offspring, and then try to reach for those goals. The most important part is trying to reach a commonality that our goals for the individuals are those of our clients.” Brian and Cassie are very clear with the goals for Retso: “Above all else, our goal and philosophy is to create an environment where each cow has the ability to excel and reach her full potential. This comes through several different facets including cow comfort, animal wellness, and employee management. In some ways, it combines the willingness to think outside the box to achieve the desired results and the tenacity to never be satisfied with good, but always aspire to be better. It is routine for us to have impromptu brainstorming sessions no matter how big or small the change with each other, mentors, and our employees; forever changing and adjusting but also willing to try something even if it may not work in the end. Within the business, the goal for us personally is to create a nucleus herd that will not only provide successful show results, but also make well-rounded cows with deep pedigrees from which we can market. For us, we are looking for a truly modern cow; extreme udder traits, moderate stature with style, positive DPR, and, at the end of the day, will make milk. It is also our goal that the animals we market have the thriftiness to excel in their new environment and have been handled enough to make them easy animals to work around. Between providing an environment where all animals can succeed and raising our own style of cows, we also provide the opportunity for others to continue as breeders even if they don’t milk cows themselves. Regularly, we consult with our clients on breeding decisions to meet their own goals; which include breeding for show heifers, show cows, or a similar style to our own modern cow. The diversity of breeding philosophies that we are able to see play out is exciting and tremendously rewarding. We find fulfillment in our clients’ successes with animals that we are privileged to care for on a daily basis. The most satisfying
2021 ALL-AMERICAN HONORS
end result has been the ability to create a community of people who have a shared passion of breeding and owning great cows.” While showing is certainly a thrilling part of Retso’s portfolio, most of their clientele have broader intentions. “For many of our clients, their goal is to ensure they continue to develop pedigrees with integrity by being on test, classifying often, and the ability to create the next generation. During 2021, we worked with about 50 different donor dams and are on pace to surpass that in the first 6 months of 2022. Being client oriented, we utilize three different IVF companies, Boviteq, Trans Ova, and Vytelle, based on which option fits the donor and owner preference.” While the boarding business is certainly a large facet, the Retso breeding program is nothing to scoff at. The cornerstone Holstein family stemmed from Butlerview Doorman Camo (EX-92 3Y), a daughter of Silvermaple Damion Camomile (EX-95). She was a cow that flushed well at Retso and transmitted her style to offspring incredible well. To date, she has two Excellent and three Very Good daughters. Brian and Cassie marketed the majority of her offspring privately but are now working with the next generation, including a King Doc granddaughter that is +2482G +1179M +86CFP +3.49T. “Directionally, she fits our combination of the modern cow and will be worked as a donor dam once she comes of age,” commented Cassie.

Ronbeth Alexander Pearl (EX-94 3E) was another of Retso’s original brood cows that has numerous daughters and granddaughters in the herd today. In 2019, Brian and Cassie partnered with long-time client and mentor, Kevin Ziemba, on ZBW M KD Lori. When Lori was born, Kevin knew she was special. When her preliminary genomic results came in, she was only 1 of 10 heifers in the breed that was over +4.0T and +2400 GTPI. Lori earned a Junior All-American nomination in 2018 and was purchased by Peter Vail in the Best of Triple-T &

Peter approached Kevin, Brian and Cassie about partnering on Lori to create the next generation. Lori had the unique combination of high type and showring style, from an untouched maternal line. She was a King Doc backed by three Excellent dams then Stone-Rise Durham Lizzie (EX-95 3E GMD DOM), HHM AllAmerican Production Cow in 2007. The new partnership exhibited Lori as a spring yearling that year, where she earned several blue ribbons and junior champion rosettes on a local and state level. There was also a strong embryo interest from Lori, with embryos exported and sold stateside. But, she really shined when she calved in, scoring VG-88 with an EX mammary at 2-05. Lori placed third at the North American Open Holstein Show, ultimately earning her HM All-American status. Currently, she has three daughters over +4.0T with ZBW-Retso-PV Ad Lib the highest at +4.27T and ranked #16 heifer in the breed. Moovin sons Styleleader *RC is +4.0T and Landshark is +3.77T; both

Brian and Cassie’s latest purchase was Gillette Lauthority 2nd Run (EX-94 3E), a sister to Windbrook and Windhammer and the highest scored daughter of Gillette Blitz 2nd Wind (VG-88 74*). 2nd Run is also owned with Peter Vail. They have offspring coming this year by King Doc, Hanans and Delta-Lambda. Brian and Cassie jokingly promote themselves as an “equal opportunity boarder,” and with that, have invested in owning animals themselves in most breeds. Owned with Brian’s mom, Becky Oster, the Guernseys have been a small project that has produced great results, with two All-American nominations in milking form - Retso AP Kiya and Retso AP Kitkat - American Pie full sisters from a successful flush of a VG-88 Grumpy daughter of Luckyvale Yogi Kiara (VG-

Brian and Cassie plan to create the next generation at Retso with Kitkat. “It has also been rewarding to still have a hand in Kiya’s continued development at Retso even after we sold her as a calf to Sylvia Johnson,” commented Cassie. They also recently entered the Ayrshire world, owning a few that are carrying ET pregnancy daughters of Blind-Buck-Valley Sol Red Pepper (EX-94), Grand Champion at the 2009 World Dairy Expo. The passion that Brian and Cassie share for their business and their cows is palpable. When looking to the future, their immediate goals include a heifer facility that will inevitably grow their heifer boarding options. But ultimately, their goals are simple: establish themselves as dedicated caretakers while building a reputation for breeding the style of cattle they love. By Julie Ashton

KAMPS-RX GENETICS E
The Apple B Stamp!
very Holstein and Red & White trade journal around the world has had features, family trees, photos, recollections and celebrations about the remarkable KHW Regiment Apple-Red. We hope someone is writing the book about Apple and her family and the incomparable, breed-changing influence they’ve had on two dairy breeds. We’d love to contribute to that book because not a day goes by that we don’t talk to a breeder or type up an ad or pedigree that has an Apple reference or bloodline. For one young couple in southwest Wisconsin, that Apple influence has been dramatic, and even life-changing, for these purebred enthusiasts. Reggie & Krysty Kamps of Darlington, WI both come to the business through their family roots. Reggie grew up at nearby Kamps Hollow Genetics, Belmont, WI (Kamps is the ‘K’ in the KHW prefix, the breeders of Apple), and Krysty Kepler found her love for Holsteins and showing at her family’s Kepridge Farms in Viola, WI.
100 « COWSMOPOLITAN Late Winter 2022
Like many happy love stories in our business, Reggie and Krysty were high schoolers when they met at a state Junior Holstein Convention in 2006. They saw each other regularly while competing against each other in Dairy Bowl and various 4-H and FFA judging contests. Eventually, competition lost out to attraction and they began dating in 2008. Krysty started college at UW-Platteville in 2009, and it was a convenient 15 minutes to Kamps Hollow. Her first visits to the farm were memorable, as she recalls, “At that time, Advent-Red was a hot bull and I was introduced to Altitude and Alisha at Kamps-Hollow. At the time, I didn’t know I was dating a guy where these famous cows lived. I just stopped in my tracks and stared!” Krysty pursued her Animal Science/ Ag Business degree while Reggie was working towards his Doctorate degree in Pharmacy at UW-Madison. They continued dating throughout college,
and also purchased a few animals together during those years while watching sales for show heifers to work with. The couple were married in 2014, and both entered the work world after graduation, where Reggie is now a Pharmacist in Platteville, WI, and Krysty currently is a Senior Territory Manager for Boehringer Ingelheim. In 2016, they took a road trip that would eventually change the map of their lives. “We went to the MilkSource Tag Sale of Champions. At the sale, one of the Apple clones - KHW Regment Apple B-Red-ETN EX-90 - was offered,” remembers Krysty. “She was a dry donor at the time, and unfortunately was out of our price range. It would have been a dream come true to own her with all of the Kamps family history, but we were just out of college and financially we could not afford to work with her reproductively.”
We wanted to make some good solid calves by popular sires to get started - we knew we had to sell some to make it work.” KRYSTY KAMPS ON THE EARLY MATING STRATEGY FOR APPLE B Apple B did not sell that year, so she was offered again a year later in 2017 through the Milksource Select Sale. By then, the Kamps had a new baby, so they didn’t make the trip to the sale. The information that Apple B didn’t respond well to conventional flushing, only IVF, had dampened their enthusiasm a bit, but as the sale was also being broadcast through CowBuyer.com, Krysty logged on. “I remember lounging around home with an infant and ended up buying Apple B in my pajamas in the kitchen from my laptop. I expected her to go higher so I just kept bidding away…and then got the “YOU WIN” message across the screen. It wasn’t the first time I was going to have to break a cow purchase to Reggie, but it was one he was just as excited about! Apple B ended up being the purchase of our lifetime and we started working her right away,” shares Krysty. With the franchise cow in the barn, the young couple brainstormed their prefix - Kamps-Rx. They wanted to continue the name from Reggie’s family’s dairy, so kept Kamps and added RX to reflect their careers in pharmacy and in animal health. Flush work isn’t cheap, and Krysty acknowledges that early on they were getting the same results as the previous owners - two or three embryos along with a big bill at the end of it. To hedge their bets, they mated her to proven high-type sires like Diamondback, Defiant, Doorman, Redburst, and Goldwyn initially. “We wanted to make some good solid calves by popular sires to get started - we knew we had to sell some to make it work,” Krysty explains.
in the Holstein or Red & White AllAmerican contests. In 2021, she had five daughters nominated between the two competitions.
of the extra special yearlings, they land at nearby Kamps Hollow and are milked in a number of sand-bedded tie-stalls that were no longer utilized.
In mid-2018, something clicked with Apple B and she started producing 20-30 oocytes a flush and fertilizing about 80% of them consistently. Yes, the flush bills got bigger, but with more calves, the couple felt they had more opportunities to market their genetics. Like the ‘original’ Apple, the choice of mating sire didn’t seem to matter - she made good ones from every flush.
Apple B has fulfilled every expectation that the couple had when they purchased her, and Krysty continues to be her biggest fan. “The best part of working with Apple B has been able to watch her offspring develop. The cow transmits so well - they are just so uniform and correct. They’re all so dairy - we really don’t have many that are on big diets during the show season.” However, the big test for any brood cow is how all of their fancy heifers calve in, and so far Apple B has passed with flying colors. “We’re up to about 13 cows at Kamps Hollow and 20 at Kepridge. Some of those cows made the 2021 show season a fun one as we evolved from just showing heifers,” says Krysty.
They built a new heifer facility at their home in the fall of 2017 - anticipating the Apple B calves to come. At 100’ x 40’ with eight group pens, it seemed a suitable size as she was only making a few eggs at a time. Things are much cozier in that barn currently in 2022, and Krysty admits space is tight with all of the extra heifers. Their goal, as always, is to market several heifers in spring sales. An additional small shed on the property houses the calves on milk, and they rent a nearby building to hold more heifers. Currently, they are housing about 15 milk calves, 40 heifers and 30 yearlings. They have no milking facilities, so any heifers they keep to freshen either move to Kepridge Dairy or, in the case of some
One of those milking daughters that provided a lot of fun was Kamps-Rx Appleb America-ET, an Undenied that scored VG-89 at 2-10 and is owned with Dennis Bowers. First in her class at the Wisconsin Championship Show, she earned All-Wisconsin Senior 2-Year-Old honors, and then stood 7th in a very competitive class at the International Holstein Show in Madison. Along with
The first Apple B calves hit the ground in March of 2018. One of those early calves, a Doorman daughter, Kamps-Rx Appleb Atbest-ET, earned Reggie & Krysty their first All-American nomination that year as a spring calf. Every year since, Apple B has produced at least one heifer or cow that has been nominated either Krysty and AppleB America (VG-89), All-Wisconsin Senior 2-Year-Old 2021. Photo © Cowsmo. her VG-89 full sister, Kamps-Rx Apple B Amaretto-ET, they won the Produce of Dam class at spring and state show on their way to being named Reserve AllAmerican Produce of Dam for 2021. It takes a village to achieve those results, and the couple appreciate all the support from family and friends. “We’re so grateful for both sides of our family allowing us the opportunity to take our heifers to the next level and calve them out. It has been fun to add a milking string at the shows and to take on that new challenge,” states Krysty. Even with a split milking herd, they still achieved an impressive BAA of 112%, which ranked them #8 in Wisconsin. They’re most proud of having three VG-89 2-year-olds in the first crop of daughters to freshen (two by Undenied and one by Diamondback). To date, Apple B has 23 Very Good daughters and three daughters scored Excellent, including the first two Excellent cows to carry the Kamps-Rx prefix. With both Reggie and Krysty working full-time outside of their dairy cattle business, there’s plenty to be done in the hours when they’re at home. They also own 200 acres of tillable land and rent an additional 100 acres that they crop farm, and also have about 20 acres of extra pasture where they run a herd of about 30 Herefords. Reggie handles all machinery work including scraping and bedding the heifer facilities, hauling in purchased hay and bedding, and takes care of all of the field work, which includes planting
and harvesting corn and soybeans for both Kamps-Rx and Kamps Hollow Genetics. He also does the daily care of the handful of milk cows housed in the tie-stalls at Kamps Hollow. Krysty takes care of the main heifer facility at home and baby calves. She takes charge of all herd health and registrations. She’s also in charge of their flush program - setting recipients, scheduling aspirations and embryo implanting. They stay flexible with chores because of their professional work schedules, but it also allows both of them to see the animals frequently. They currently don’t have any hired help, but do have a few local juniors that help out with extra chores and during the show season, both at the shows and when they are out of town. If that doesn’t already sound like enough, the couple is also raising a young family. They had their first daughter, Demi, in the fall of 2016. Two years later in the fall of 2018, they welcomed their son, Elliot, and are now also expecting a baby girl in March 2022. “We are glad to have our country home and facilities to keep our kids involved in the industry that has played such a big part in our lives together. So far, Elliot (3) enjoys his time in the tractor/skid steer with dad and Demi (5) loves to work with the heifers. She has just started showing at our School fair and looks forward to showing in the 10 & under class at the District Show. Although with this, we have been introduced to the hardships of selling the calves that are ‘hers’,” laughs Krysty.

Some of those heifers sold in their ‘Rock the Ledge’ online auction they hosted last March. Along with Brandon and Shianne Ferry of Fer-Crest Farms, they utilized the marketing arm of CattleClub.com to sell 50 head averaging $4,355. Several heifers from the sale went on to do well in the show ring for their new owners in 2021. Sadly, no great cow lives forever and the couple lost Apple B last summer to an aggressive peritonitis at 13 years of age. Krysty speaks of her personality with fondness. “She had her own pen and small lot at home, and loved the attention she always received. She easily weighed over a ton and was a gentle giant, until it came to clipping her, then everyone needed an extra insurance policy! She would load herself onto the trailer for every aspiration and knew the exact direction she needed to go.” In addition to the memories, Apple B has left a remarkable legacy with the Kamps, which Krysty will always appreciate. “With over 100 daughters on the ground that carry our prefix, she gave us a known name in the industry in a few short years. She also left behind a full tank of embryos that we continue to implant to make more promising offspring. She, as an Apple clone, has a pedigree and influence that will never be forgotten, and has made such a huge impact in both the red and black business. We are so grateful to have been part of her story and that story is far from over!” By Kathleen O’Keefe

California Takes the Crown
n the final moments before the results of the National Jersey Jug Futurity were announced, anticipation was building up between the girls who made the top five in the National Jersey Queen contest - the time had come to announce the title of the 64th National Jersey Queen and her court for the upcoming year. California was cheering when Kylie Konyn of San Diego, California was crowned the 2021 queen! It’s now Kylie’s turn in the spotlight as she was the 1st Alternate in the Queen contest in 2020. Konyn has been involved in the dairy industry her entire life, and continues to make strides to further her involvement. Her family owns and operates one of the last two remaining dairy farms within San Diego, where they milk 800 head of cattle. The dairy was started in 1965 when her grandfather immigrated to the United States from Holland. Kylie attends the University of Wisconsin-Madison, class of 2025, where she double majors in Dairy Science and Genetics and Genomics with a certificate in Agricultural Business Management. Kylie has been involved with the Jersey breed throughout her junior career, and participates within the breed at local, state, and national levels. She has received Outstanding Jersey Breeder and Exhibitor awards at her county fair for the past three years. Konyn has received many state production awards, which includes 1st for the past three years with JX Yosemite Sully Perform EX-92%. She and her sister have purchased heifers from the Pot O’ Gold Sale that have also done well in the state production contests as well as receiving National recognition. Kylie has served as the President of the California Junior Jersey Association for three terms. In addition to the Jersey association, she is also heavily involved in the California Junior Holstein association and the Holstein Association USA. She has competed at the National Holstein Convention in the jeopardy, speech, and dairy bowl contests. In the junior division, her team 108 « COWSMOPOLITAN Late Winter 2022
was undefeated and named Champion Junior Team and as a senior, her team was named Champion Senior Team. Kylie has also been recognized as a Young Distinguished Junior Member and has held many leadership positions within her state junior Holstein association.
In 2015, a longtime mentor of Kylie’s, Regina Pozzi, was named National Jersey Queen. When Kylie witnessed her mentor receiving the crown, she knew she wanted to compete for queen one day. Pozzi was influential in helping Kylie get her first Jersey heifer, served as a guide through various events, and helped get her involved within the association. Konyn hopes to give this opportunity to others through her time as queen. Her interest and passion for the Jersey breed is what gave her the final push to compete for the title of National Jersey Queen. “This passion has been fueled by the outpouring support of mentors and programs through the American Jersey Cattle Association,” Kylie said, followed by saying how she plans to utilize those skills she gained to share her interests and “create lifetime passions for the Jersey breed within others.” Konyn plans on using her platform as queen to promote and educate others about the many programs available through AJCA, and as a way to give back to the programs that helped shape who she is today. A few of the programs that influenced Kylie are the Queen of Quality Program, REAP, and genomic testing. The Jersey Youth Academy, Achievement Contest, and Pot O’ Gold Sale are programs that open doors for young members. She believes that the youth are the future of the industry and it is very important to be able to serve as a representative and role model in the breed. She plans to use social media as a way to educate consumers and people who may not have previous knowledge of the Jersey breed and AJCA. During her time as Queen, Konyn is most excited for the ability to serve Jersey
Kylie Konyn was named the 64th National Jersey Queen during the Naitonal Jersey Jug Futurity in November 2021. breeders across the United States. She is looking forward to attending events such as the National Convention in Oregon, World Dairy Expo in Madison, WI, and both the Junior All American and All American Jersey Shows in Louisville, KY. Prior to being named queen, Kylie believed that her participation in Class VII of Jersey Youth Academy gave her a toolbox of knowledge about the dairy industry and the Jersey breed. According to Kylie, the most beneficial and influential part of competing in the Jersey Queen Contest is the opportunity to communicate with industry professionals and producers in the breed. “You get the opportunity to build connections that will serve you later in your career,” Konyn said. She also valued the opportunity to talk with other young women from across the country to learn about various aspects of the Jersey breed and the dairy industry. One piece of advice Kylie wanted to give young women with the desire to compete for National Jersey Queen is to apply and go through the whole process. Before she got the National title, she served as the California Jersey Queen and Western National Jersey Queen and applied for National Queen two other times. Kylie stated that each time she applied, she gained valuable connections and information that helped her succeed in the future. By Katelyn Poitras

2021 HIGH R ANKING BAA LISTS The Holstein Breed Age Average (BAA%) value provides a way to compare the score of an animal (and herd average) to the average of the breed, taking into account age of the animal and stage of lactation. All animals receive an individual BAA value on your herd classification report, and herds participating in the Classic or Standard options of the Holstein Classification program receive an overall BAA for the herd. To learn more about how BAA is calculated, visit the Classification page on www.holsteinusa.com and click on the BAA tab. For the purposes of these lists, if a herd classified twice in a year (between 1/1/2021 and 12/31/2021) and received an official herd BAA for both classifications, only the most recent BAA was used. To appear on these lists, a herd must have at least 10 cows included in the BAA calculation. In 2021, 982 herds had a BAA value eligible for inclusion in these lists. The average number of cows included in the BAA calculation for the entire group was 68, and the average BAA% was 107.5.
